Discussion of the paper of L. G. HUNTLEY,. presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 102, June, 1915, pp. 1333 to 1349. E. W. SHAW, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*). -The comparatively great extent and uniform character of the Dakota sandstone make it of great interest to the student of rock pores and the movements of their fluid contents. However, compared with other sands in areas of carbonaceous rocks facts concerning it do not seem to be of such great direct importance to the producer for it has thus far yielded few important pools of oil or gas. Information concerning the sandstone is extensive but scattered, hence a general treatise regarding it-particularly its pores, the fluids they contain, and the movements of the fluids-has been much needed. I therefore feel that the. chief thing to be ,desired concerning Mr. Huntley's paper is that it were more extended, particularly as to the discussion of the data presented. The general structure map of the Dakota is of especial interest. Slight changes in wording seem to be desirable here and there in the paper. For example, at the beginning of the third paragraph one-wonders if flora instead of fauna were not intended. In Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 the vertical scale seems incorrect. Concerning the analyses of oil quoted it is noted that they "are given, as indicating what may be expected in different localities." This seems to need modification for the average analysis of oil from Powder River, which indicates for example that this oil begins to boil at 213°C. The fact is that the samples to which this figure refers were taken from seeps long exposed. to the air :find hence the underground Dakota oil of this district no doubt differs profoundly from that which the analysis indicates. The product of a well here would probably differ more in boiling point and other. respects from the samples analyzed than it would from almost any other petroleum in the world. The use of the word synclinorium does not conform to the original definition, but this may be pardonable because misuse of the term, though a different misuse, has become general. Synclinorium is an orographic term and cannot be correctly applied outside of mountain regions, for it is derived in part from the Greek word for mountain. It has, however, been widely used in a purely structural sense for compound syncline. The broad shallow syncline of the Dakota sandstone falls in neither category. In situ X-ray investigations were made on polycrys-talline silver films deposited by vacuum evaporation on (111) CaF2 and (100) NaCl single-crystal substrates at 80°K. The films were evaporated and annealed in an X-ray diffractometer attachment having a residual gas pressure of 2 x lo-' Torr. All measurements were made without exposing the films to the atmosphere. Measurements were made on the films in the as-deposited state and after various annealing treatments. The intrinsic stacking and twin fault densities, the magnitudes of the uniform and nonuniform strains, and the crystallite sizes were determined. In addition the textures in the films were measured qualitatively. The results obtained for the as-deposited films on single-crystal substrates are in substantial agreement with previously reported results for silver films deposited on glass. Intrinsic stacking and twin faults, as well as uniform and nonuniform strains, were present in these films. During the various annealing treatments (up to 350°C) the faults and nonuniform strains annealed out. Considerable grain growth and texture changes occurred also. The effects were much greater for the NaCl substrate than for the CaFz substrate. The relative magnitudes of the grain growth in the variously oriented grains could be explained qualitatively in terms of the thermal strains and strain energies introduced into the differently oriented grains during the initial, irreversible anneal. These strains were due to the different thermal expansion coefficients of the film and substrate. X-RAY diffraction measurements on evaporated films deposited on substrates at low temperature have the advantage that many of the imperfections introduced into the film during deposition are "frozen in". Thus, the influence of a very important experimental variable, substrate temperature, on the imperfection structure of evaporated metal films may be studied. Moreover, the effects of annealing such films makes possible the study of thermally activated recovery processes in these films. The present study was designed to determine the influence of single-crystal substrates on the resultant film structure relative to the previous results obtained using glass substrates.' To this end great care was taken to keep the experimental variables the same in the two cases. Different experimental conditions would, of course, result in films having different physical properties. Again the initial substrate temperature was in the neighborhood of 80°K and the films were subsequently annealed to 350°C. The pure metal silver was chosen for evaporation, primarily because of its relatively low stacking fault energy and consequent high fault density in the as-deposited state. The silver films were formed by evaporation onto air-cleaved {ill} CaF, and (100) NaCl surfaces cooled to 80°K in an X-ray diffractometer attachment2 having a base residual gas pressure of 2 X l0-' Torr. The films were not exposed to the atmosphere until all of the X-ray data had been recorded. In this way one of the most important experimental variables, environment, could be well-controlled and reproduced. X-ray measurements were made at the temperature of deposition and included determinations of the diffraction line peak positions, line shapes, and integrated intensities. The peak position measurements were used to determine the intrinsic stacking fault densities and the average uniform strain in the film. The shapes of the diffraction lines provided information on the twin fault density, true crystallite size, and average nonuniform strain. The preferred orientation in the film was determined qualitatively from the integrated intensities. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The evaporator attachmentZ was charged with 99.999 pct Ag pellets positioned in a tantalum filament which had been outgassed previously at l0-8 Torr. The CaFz and NaCl single crystals were cleaved in air and then placed in position in the chamber so that their cleavage surfaces were on the diffractometer axis. The chamber was prepumped using a sorption pump, sealed off, and then baked at 150°C for 24 hr. The ion pump operated during the bakeout cycle. The substrate was then heated to 500° C by means of an auxiliary heater and kept hot until the rest of the chamber was cooled slowly to room temperature. This bakeout procedure consistently resulted in an ultimate pressure in the low lo-' Torr range. The substrate was then cooled down on 80°K. Its temperature was monitored by a thermocouple wedged into the rear of the copper substrate holder. The diffracted intensity and peak position of the 111, 222, and 333 CaF, lines were measured prior to evaporation. Nickel-filtered, pulse-height-discriminated copper radiation was used. Similar measurements were made for the 200 and 400 lines from NaC1. These measurements were used as a lattice parameter check and to determine the thickness of the evaporated silver films from the attenuation of the substrate lines. The evaporation rates were approximately 3A per sec for both films while the maximum pressures during evaporation were 3 x lo- ' and 7 x 10"8 Torr for the CaF, and NaCl cases, respectively. The film thickness was measured by the attenuation of the CaF, and NaCl substrate lines and by at optical interference method. Values of 1700 and 1500A, respectively, were obtained for the silver

The temperature dependence of the microscopic yield stress (the stress to produce a plastic strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in.) and the stress-plastic strain curve of polycrystalline Cu 1.9 wt pct Be have been measured for the solution treated condition, an intermediate condition containing G.P. zones and ?' precipitate and the overaged ? precipitate condition, in the range from -58° to 200° C. A transition in micro -yield behavior and a large temperature dependence were noted for the intermediate condition, which are interpreted in terms of the interaction of glide dislocations with two differently sized zones. In comparison the microscopic yield stresses of the solution treated and overaged conditions were less sensitive to temperature variations and are satisfied by the Mott-Nabarro and dislocation bowing theories, respectively. A determination of the temperature dependence of the yield stress of a precipitation hardening alloy has provided a powerful tool for evaluation of the operative deformation mechanism. There is a marked contrast between the effect of temperature on the yield behavior of a metal containing coherent zones or intermediate precipitates, which can be "cut through" by mobile dislocations, and a metal containing a dispersion of noncoherent particles, through which dislocation "bowing out" is the dominant role of deformation.' These studies have in general been confined to single crystals, as it was considered that similar experiments on polycrystalline material did not produce good data because of the lack of sensitivity with which the yield stress could be determined. However, this objection has been removed by the introduction of mi-crostrain techniques, with which the yield stress in polycrystalline materials can be measured to a strain sensitivity of 10-6. Such measurements have not only shown that the deformation of polycrystalline precipitation hardening alloys can be examined with the same detail as single crystals, but also that some unexpected results are obtained.' In this paper the results obtained from a study of the temperature dependence of the microscopic yield stress (the stress to produce a plastic strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in.) and the stress-plastic strain curve of a polycrystalline Cu 1.9 wt pct Be precipitation hardening alloy (Berylco 25) are discussed. The temperature dependence of the alloy was measured for three different conditions: 1) The solution treated condition (a supersaturated solid solution of a containing ~12 at. pct Be3) which is obtained by water quenching the alloy from 800° C. 2) The condition of y' intermediate precipitate, to- gether with some G.P. zones,' which is produced after an aging treatment of 2 hr at 315°C from the solution treated condition. (The alloy was cold rolled to 40 pct reduction prior to aging to minimize grain boundary precipitation effects.)4 3) The condition with equilibrium ? precipitate structure2 which is developed after an aging treatment of 24 hr at 425° C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens of gage length 1 in. and with rectangular cross section of 0.18 by 0.06 in. were prepared from the solution treated, cold rolled alloy and were either resolution treated for 1 hr at 800°C, followed by water quenching, or aged for 2 hr at 315°C and 24 hr at 425° C to produce the desired precipitate structures. The microstrain characteristics of the aged specimens were determined at temperatures from —58" to 200° C and those of the solution treated specimens from -58° to 30° C. Each temperature was controlled to ± 0.2°C, which was a level of stability sufficient to eliminate thermal expansion effects from the measurements (~1.2°C temperature increase produced an extension of 2 x 10-6 in.). The microplastic behavior of the specimens in the temperature range below 82" C was measured with a standard Tuckerman strain gage,5 while at temperatures above 82°C a modified Tuckerman gage with a reduced strain sensitivity (4 x10-6 in. per- in.) was used. A load-unload technique was used to establish values of the microscopic yield stress. The specimen was strained at a constant cross head speed of 2 x 10-2 in. per min to a given stress level, at which the total strain was measured. Then the specimen was immediately unloaded at the same rate and any residual plastic strain determined. This procedure was repeated for an increasing series of stress levels until the microscopic yield stress was established by a direct measure of the stress to produce a residual plastic strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in. (It should be noted that, as reversible dislocation motion occurs at stresses less than the microscopic yield stress,2 the plastic strain rate at this level was not constant.) In an ideal test, the microscopic yield stress would be determined from a continuous stress-strain measurement, rather than from a load-unload sequence, in order to eliminate mechanical recovery effects.6 However, it was found experimentally that mechanical recovery was negligible in Cu 1.9 wt pct Be at small plastic strains for all the temperatures investigated, as the microscopic yield stress was independent of the number of load-unload cycles employed (i.e., the values measured for specimens subjected to different numbers of cycles was within the experimental scatter determined for specimens tested in an identical manner). TO reach equilibrium between different phases in cobalt-rich alloys requires prohibitively long annealing cobalt-richalloystimes when temperatures are below about 700°C. The fact that a transformation from face-centered cubic to close-packed hexagonal readily tered takes place at temperatures below this in the cobalt-rich solid solutions is not an indication that thermally activated processes occur at an appreciable rate, for the transformation is well established as martensitic in nature. Wide divergence between heating and cooling experiments and high sensitivity to prior heat treatment make it difficult to judge temperatures of equilibrium between the phases.&apos; One object of the present work was to see if the information object of on the relative stability of phases could be gained by substituting plastic deformation for thermal agitation. Procedures were worked out that led to the determination of a diffusionless type of phase diagram, which represents the temperature of of phase equal stability for phases of the same composition, and the technique was applied to the Co-Ni system. Another object of the work was to see whether or not deformation would generate frequent stacking faults when these were thin lamellae of quentstackingfaultsa phase having higher free energy than the parent phase. The alloys were prepared in 80 to 100 g melts from cobalt (with metallic impurities estimated spectrochemically as follows: Ni, 0.05 pct; Fe, 0.001 pct.; Mg, Si, Cu, Cr, Al, < 0.001 pct) and Mond Car-bony1 nickel (with Fe, 0.05 pct; Si, 0.003 pct; C, 0.61 pct.; Cu, 0.001 pct; Co, Cr not detected, < 0.01 pct). The metals were melted in pure Al2O3 crucibles. An atmosphere of argon, that had been purified by passing over hot magnesium chips, was used for the alloys that, by analysis of the portions of the ingots actually used, were found to contain 15.3, 25.7, and 35.0 pct Ni, and vacuum melting (after degassing) was used for those containing 29.4 and 31.5 pct Ni. After induction melting the alloys were allowed to solidify in the crucible, and slices % in. thick x ½ in. in diam were annealed 12 hr at 1350°C for homogenization. These same specimens were used throughout the series of experiments, with annealing treatments of 4 hr at 900°C in purified hydrogen followed by furnace cooling, alternating with the deformation and X-ray tests discussed below. Results Spontaneous transformation was observed on cooling to room temperature in all alloys containing 29.4 pct Ni or less and by cooling the 31.5 pct alloy to — 195°C but was not observed in the 35 pct alloys after cooling to —195°C. These results are in satisfactory agreement with the cooling experiments of Masimoto.4 From these data it is clear that the temperature of beginning transformation M,,, drops to 20°C with the addition of about 30 pct Ni. The test for spontaneous transformation was metallographic. Specimens were thermally polished by annealing 10 hr in hydrogen at 1350°C, then furnace cooled; if trans- formation had occurred there were relief effects visible on the thermally polished surfaces. These markings were narrow straight lines, usually resolvable at high magnification as clusters of fine lines that resembled slip lines. It was concluded that they resulted from displacements on (111) planes, for the number of directions in individual grains often reached but never exceeded four, and lines could always be found parallel to the thermally etched (111) boundaries of annealing twins. The markings were thus consistent with the idea that the transformation occurs by (111) plane displacements (Shockley partial dislocations moving on (111) planes). This was further confirmed by X-ray tests for stacking disorders. Using an oscillating crystal technique previously employed to detect strain-induced faulting in Cu-Si alloys," streaks indicative of the stacking faults were looked for and found on X-ray films of the spontaneously transformed 25.7 pct Ni alloys, as expected by analogy with Edwards and Lipson&apos;s results on pure cobalt." The streaks were much intensified after rolling at room temperature. Transformation induced by plastic strain was investigated as a function of alloy composition and temperature of deformation. A series of tests was made to determine suitable straining and X-raying techniques. Filing was found inferior to abrasion in converting cubic samples to hexagonal, and abrasion was less effective than peening in producing smooth unspotty Debye rings in the X-ray patterns. Because the diffraction lines were broad, Geiger-counter spectrometer records of filings were less sensitive in revealing small amounts of transformed material than X-ray patterns recorded on films in a small diameter camera. After these exploratory tests the following methods were adopted. Specimens that had been annealed at least 4 hr at 900°C and furnace cooled were mounted in a block of aluminum, brought to temperature, and peened thoroughly with a mullite pestle preheated to the same temperature. The specimens were then quenched to room temperature. In peening, a circular area of % in. diam was given 500 blows. A few control tests showed that an additional 1000 blows did not detectably change the proportions of the phases present. The amount of transformation was judged by X-ray reflection patterns from the peened surface, using the innermost four lines of the cubic and the hexagonal patterns with filtered CoKa radiation,

IT was noticed early by operators that high recoveries and flocculation of the sulphide minerals were closely correlated in agitation-froth flotation. Later, this readily visible flocculation was found almost invariably to be due to the binding together of the oiled sulphides by minute air bubbles, and is now known to be characteristic of pulps in which at least one of the mineral species is coated with an insoluble collecting oil. In 1930 it was reported1 that in differential flotation a correlation exists between Brownian movement of particles in the pulp and their nonfloatability, and that Brownian movement and dispersion are likewise correlated, whence it would appear to follow that dispersion of a mineral particle in a flotation pulp denotes a particle condition unfavorable to flotation. In 1934 it was postulated2 that Brownian movement, dispersion and nonfloatability all flow from the condition of the surface of the dispersed particles. It was also postulated at that time that the surfaces of dispersed particles are ionized, the ionized compound being a product of reaction between a component of the particle and a. component of the pulp, of a mass solubility of the general order of a fraction of a milligram to 15 to 20 mg. per liter. It was then further asserted, and has since been confirmed by Bankoff,3 that sulphides so conditioned with soluble collectors as to be floatable flocculate without the intervention of air bubbles as binding media. The present paper comprises an inquiry into the nature of the bound and counter ions in zinc sulphide dispersed by sodium arsenate. A part of its findings was mentioned in the 1934 paper above cited.2 The tests show that: I. When powdered granular zinc sulphide is immersed in aqueous solutions of sodium arsenate, arsenate ion is abstracted from solution and anchored to the solid surface, while sulphate and lower sulphoxy ions are concurrently displaced therefrom in substantially stoichiometric quantities. 2. The ion counterbalancing the anchored arsenate ion is zinc. 3. Dispersion and Brownian movement of zinc sulphide are concurrently maxima at an arsenate-ion concentration lying between 0.01 and 0.001-molar sodium arsenate. 4. Any condition or reaction that tends to remove the zinc arsenate coating from the zinc sulphide particles decreases dispersion and Brownian movement concurrently. EXPERIMENTAL Three samples of zinc sulphide were used. Lot I was C.P. zinc sulphide, washed well beyond absence of chloride, as shown by test with silver ion. Lot 2 was prepared by precipita-

In all three principal dunite dikes, minute disseminated grains of pyrrhotite are to be seen in the fresh rock in amounts less than 1 pct. Traces of nickel have been reported from many such specimens. Nickeliferous pyrrhotite is the principal nickel-bearing mineral, although olivine contains very minor amounts of nickel in solid solution, substituting for magnesium and iron. Such occurences are of no economic significance. Nickel analyses of possible economic significance (up to 3 pct Ni) have been returned from samples taken near the margins of the two large western dunite dikes. These samples were from schistose zones along and within the dike walls. The mineralized shear zones, up to 30 ft wide, strike N 30 W and dip from 65" to 90" west. They consist of layers of hard, fresh, green-gray dunite, mineralized with finely disseminated pyrrhotite. These layers alternate with layers of soft, black, oxidized schistose dunite up to 1 ft wide, well mineralized with pyrrhotite and tabular-fractured pentlandite in crystals up to 1/4-in. diam. Sulfides identified in polished sections were chiefly pyrrhotite and pentlandite, with much smaller amounts of chalcopyrite. There are two varieties of pyrrhotite. One develops a fine polish and conforms to published descriptions. The other is slightly darker and browner, does not polish as well, and displays flamelike growth or intergrowth structure when etched with nitric acid fumes. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite crystallized contemporaneously in the form of veins in the olivine and as fillings of the interstices of euhedral olivine crystals. Chalcopyrite replaces the other sulfides. The most striking feature of the deposits is their occurrence in intimately fractured and schistose zones in the dunite where faulting has been localized along the contacts of the sediments and the dunite dikes. Though far too little detailed work has been done to be certain, there appears to be a higher concentration of sulfides in the shear zones along the margins of dike apophyses, sediment reentrants, and strike and dip irregularities. Much more study would be required in order to submit a plausible theory of formation of the nickel deposits, supported by laboratory and field evidence. Results of the present study, especially localization of the metals by fracturing, certainly indicate that the nickel concentrations were brought about by precipitation of nickel sulfides from fluids that used the fractures as a means of ingress. Studies of nickel sulfide deposits throughout the world have demonstrated that such sulfides were deposited at considerable depths and at temperatures of several hundred degrees. This would rule out the possibility of groundwater as the transporting medium. The two possible sources of hot nickel-bearing fluids are quartz diorite and gabbro. The first possibility is that large volumes of fluids, expelled from the quartz diorite magma during its crystallization, obtained a supply of nickel by altering the nickeliferous olivine of the dunites. The likelihood of this process is lessened by the recognition that, although the dunites show some alteration to serpentine, talc, and trem-olite, they are for the most part remarkably fresh outside the schistose zones. The worldwide association of nickel with basic rocks, together with the presence of pyrrhotite in thin films on joint planes of the gabbro on Jumbro Mountain, favors the gabbro source. PRESENT knowledge of the usual metallurgical slags indicates that they are, for the most part, rather complex in behavior and as yet there is no ready means for describing, in a simple manner, the behavior of any one of them. One of the best known slag systems is the iron oxide-silica-lime ternary which is the basic "solvent" in a number of important metallurgical refining operations, the basic open hearth being one of the most important. In this operation, the slag dissolves such components as sulphur, phosphorus, manganese oxide, and magnesia. Considerable study of this slag system and the behavior of these additions has been carried out in the past by a number of authors, as has been summarized in several critical reviews.&apos;,&apos;2 However, except for determination of the activity of iron oxide, only a limited amount of effort has been directed towards developing, from these data, an understanding of the general behavior of the basic solvent. Reported here are the results from a series of calculations based on data from the literature which permit a semiquantitative evaluation of the activities of iron oxide, silica, and lime (plus magnesia) in the ternary system at 1600°C. The preliminary results, which were reported briefly at a symposium held by AIME in 1953, have been revised and are completed. The steps in the calculation are as follows:* I—establish the activity curves and the curve of the excess molar free energy of mixing at 1600°C for each of the binary systems, 2—construct the activity surface of iron oxide for the ternary from the data on the binary systems and information available in the literature for the ternary area, 3—determine the surface of excess molar free energy of mixing for the ternary system from the activity surface of iron oxide and from the molar curves obtained for the binary system, and 4—differentiate the ternary surface of the molar excess free energy of mixing to obtain the ternary surfaces for the logarithm of the activity coefficients for silica and lime (log rslo, and log rc.~). Si0,-Fe,O: Schuhmann and Ensio have measured the activity of iron oxide in simple iron oxide-silica slags when in equilibrium with y iron. Their data recalculated to 1600°C are shown in Fig. 1. Also included is a point representing a measurement by Gokcen and Chipmana of the activity of iron oxide at 1600°C at the point of saturation with solid silica. For convenience and in accordance with other treatments,&apos; the calculations are based on the hypothetical component, FelO, which is obtained by converting all the analyzed iron in the slag to FeO. In spite of Schuhmann and Ensio&apos;s conclusion that the activity of iron oxide in the system does not vary with temperature over the experimental range of 1258" to 1407"C, the data are corrected to 1600°C assuming that temperature does have an effect. It was felt to be most reasonable to assume that the term log rr.10 is a linear function of the reciprocal of the temperature. Reyu has indicated that an effect of temperature on the activities in this system is to be expected from the Schuhmann and Ensio data. In essence, the correction consists of multiplying the experimental value of log rf,,o by the ratio of the experimental temperature in Kelvin to 1873°K. The magnitude of the correction is not large, being approximately 11.5 pct of the experimental value of log rve10. A very minor correction was necessary to compensate for the fact that the slags were in equilibrium with y iron in the experiment, while at steel-making temperatures they would be in equilibrium with liquid iron. Data for the correction were obtained from Darken and Gurry. The standard states established are pure liquid iron oxide (FelO) in equilibrium with pure liquid iron (with the appropriate amount of oxygen in solution) and pure liquid silica. The method of plotting in Fig. 1 is convenient for the calculation of the activity of liquid silica and permits a reasonable extrapolation for the activity of Fe,O in the ranges where no experimental data are available. The uncertainty in the extrapolation to infinity at one terminal where Nvelo = 1 for the usual Gibbs-Duhem integration is reduced considerably by this method. The region of two coexisting liquid phases is estimated to range from 1.8 to 41.7 mol pct Fe,O. The nature of the activity curve for the single-phase region indicates that the activity of iron oxide across the two-phase region is very close to 0.39. Computation of the function log ~F,,o/(1— NF,,o)&apos; for this region (dashed line) in conjunction with the curve through the adjusted experimental data indicate the best probable value of 0.382 for alPe,o in the two-phase area. The line from 0 to 0.018 Nf~~o is obtained by assuming that the component follows Henry&apos;s law. In this range, the value for log rveto is 2.59. Appropriate mathematical manipulation of the plotted linet yields the activity curves for the The curve AF", the excess molar free energy of mixing (actual minus ideal), as shown in Fig. 3 is also computed from Fig. 1. This curve is required for subsequent calculations. CaO-Fe,O: The phase diagram for the lime-iron oxide system when in equilibrium with liquid iron is not well known but there appears to be no intermediate compound present. This fact as well as the activity values for Fe,O extrapolated to the CaO-Fe,O binary from Taylor and Chipman&apos; tend to indicate somewhat negative deviations from ideality for the activity curves for the two components. RECENT investigators have noted anomalous behavior in the electrical resistivity of vanadium below room temperature. Rostoker and Yamamoto1 in studying the vanadium-oxygen system hypothesized that the body-centered-tetragonal phase existing from 15 to 34 at. pet O at approximately 800°K was really a low-temperature allotrope of vanadium that was stabilized by oxygen. In measuring the electrical resistance of cold-swaged vanadium rod over a range of temperatures, a small discontinuity was observed at approximately 240°K, supporting their notion of allotropy. However, the magnitude of the observed discontinuity was extremely small. Loomis and Carlson2 in studying the ductile-brittle transition in vanadium also made resistance measurements and reported a discontinuity near 200°K. More recently, White and Woods3 showed that the electrical resistivity from room temperature to approximately 100 °K was not linear and at variance with the Bloch-Griineisen law. The removal of hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors from iron ores becomes of interest when a duplex flotation process is considered for upgrading, when a pelletizing process is considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid or a soap collector, or when a disposal of froth products from cationic silica flotation is of environmental concern. Ozone can oxidize organic compounds rapidly, thereby removing the hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors. Ozone is widely used for treating and purifying drinking water, waste water treatment, and for chemicals processing (Murphy and Orr, 1975; Rice et al., 1980). Its uses in metallurgical operations, however, are very sparse (Allegrini et al., 1970; Chernobrov and Rozinoyer, 1975; Ishii et al., 1970; Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985; Matsubara et al., 1978). Yet, its high reactivity and the absence of potentially hazardous byproducts become of interest in destroying flotation reagents adsorbed on mineral surfaces or remaining in mill water for recycle or for discharge. Duplex Flotation A duplex flotation process, as applied to oxidized iron ores, would involve a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process has been used in the Florida phosphate fields. Fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates. A combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho, lime and alkali phosphate, or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, has therefore been proposed. In a previous article (Iwasaki et al., 1967) , the use of activated carbon was found to be effective in removing fatty acid coatings both in the duplex flotation and the pelletizing processes. The use of ozone offers another approach to the removal of fatty acid coatings from iron oxide surfaces. To investigate the possible application of the duplex flotation process, a specularite ore from Michigan analyzing 36.5% iron was used. A 600-g (1.3-1b) sample was ground in a laboratory rod mill together with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of sodium silicate to -150 µm (-100 mesh). This was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation cell, and deslimed four times at 20 µm (quartz equivalent). The deslimed pulp was transferred to a laboratory conditioner, diluted to 40% solids, and conditioned with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of soda ash and 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of oleic acid. The conditioned pulp was then transferred back to the Fagergren cell, floated until barren of froth, and the rougher froth product was returned to the cell and cleaned. The results are presented in Table 1. The cleaner concentrate at this point analyzed 45.3% Fe. The cleaner concentrate coated with fatty acid was transferred to a 2-L (0.53-gal) beaker. While the pulp was agitated with a glass T-stirrer, ozone was bubbled into the agitated pulp for 15 minutes at a rate of 10 mg/min (0.00035 oz per min) ozone (250 g/t or 0.5 lb per st 03 feed). It was observed that the pulp ceased to froth after about 10 minutes. The amine flotation of siliceous gangue from the ozonated pulp was carried out first by conditioning with a dextrin, a commonly used starch depressant for iron oxides. This was followed by flotation with a stage addition of an ether amine at increments of 100 g/t (0.2 lb per st). Three stages were required to float the siliceous gangue to near completion. The three froth products were combined and cleaned twice. When the cationic flotation Rougher, Cleaner 1 and Cleaner 2 cell products were combined, an iron concentrate analyzing 64.5% iron was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 72.8%. Pelletizing Fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully in northern Michigan mills. But at other locations, fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates proved so undesirable in agglomeration that other methods of concentration had to be sought. For example, a sinter mix containing iron ore concentrates upgraded by fatty acid flotation resulted in decreased productivity. This occurred because the micropellets of particles with the hydrophobic coating are less tolerant of moisture. Thus, the bed permeability is lost (Beebe, 1965). The agglomeration of concentrates obtained by the fatty acid flotation alone, and the hydrophobic coatings destroyed by ozonation or by the duplex flotation process, is not expected to cause any difficulty since the surfaces of the concentrates would be hydrophilic. Removal of the fatty acid coating with activated carbon, indicated by the loss of floatability, was shown to restore the decrepitation temperature of wet balls during drying cycle (Iwasaki et al., 1967). Disposal of Cationic Silica Flotation Froths Recent demands of iron blast furnaces place the silica content of the magnetic taconite pellets at about 5%. Conventional process for magnetic taconite involving fine grinding and magnetic separation often produces magnetic concentrates analyzing in excess of 5% silica. This is due to the presence of the middling grains of siliceous gangue and magnetite. Cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates (DeVaney, 1949) may be used to reduce the silica content. But the amine coating on siliceous gangue becomes of environmental concern when the flotation tailings are discarded in tailing ponds.

As summarized in a re- cent symposium of the Electrochemical Society on "Mechanical Properties of Inter metallic Compound", most of the experimental evidence regarding the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds centers about the effect of temperature on the hardness and ductility of polycrystalline specimens. The available data reveal that the plastic behavior of intermetallic compounds might be rationalized in terms of the usual dislocation mechanisms appropriate to a solid solutions providing the additional complexities arising from crystal structure, long-range ordering, short-range ordering, and defect lattices are taken into consideration. It is apparent, however, in terms of the history on a solid solutions, that a complete detailed mechanistic rationalization of dislocation processes may not be possible until the deformation processes are studied in single crystals of intermetallic compounds. The present paper contains a preliminary report on the plastic behavior of single crystals of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase over a wide range of temperatures. The results confirm the thesis that single crystal data provide a most effective method of identifying operative dislocation mechanisms in intermetallic compounds. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Several factors prompted the selection of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase for this preliminar investigation on the plastic properties of single crystals of intermetallic compounds: 1) This phase has a wide solubility range5 which would permit future investigations on the effect of composition and axial ratios on slip mechanisms. 2) Although it undoubtedly exhibits short-range ordering (or clustering) this intermetallic phase is free from complexities arising from long-range ordering.6 3) Since the atomic radii of aluminum and silver are practically identical, the possible complications due to Cottrell locking are minimized. 4)Whereas the dislocations on the basal planes are expected to dissociate into Shockley partials and are thus susceptible to Suzuki locking, those on the prismatic planes probably remain complete. 5) The axial ratio, being 1.61, is almost ideal, suggesting that short-range ordering may be almost spherically symmetrical. The present investigation was conducted exclusively with the hexagonal Ag-A1 alloy containing 33 at. pct Al. Preliminary investigations revealed that this alloy undergoes basal slip by the (0001)

A study of the relationship between undercooling for nucleation and structure in Sn-Cu alloys with 0.1 to 5 pct Cu has shown that in hypereutectic allojls the halo of tin that surrounds the primary crystals of Cu3Sn5 is larger, the larger the undercooling for nucleation o,f the tin. This increase of halo size results in a decrease of coupled eutectic, and, in alloys far from the eulectic composition, may produce its complete disappeavance, with the formation of a divorced eutectic structure. This was confirnred by the excrrnination of other alloys in which divorced eutectic slructuves are formed, and leads to the conclusion that they ave only an extrenle case of halo forrtzalion , which results when the two phases freeze one at a time and solidification of the first is completed Defove the second starts. It was also found that under proper conditions of nucleation all types of eutectic structures can be formed in the sartte system , and therefore divorced eutectics, like normal and anomalous, are not characteristic of the syslett~, but are mainly controlled by nucleatiorz. Dizlovced eutectics are formed when the phase that tutcleates the eulectic vequires a large undevcooling for ils nucleation and when the cotnpositiorz of the alloy is far from the eutectic., on the side of the primary phase that does not nucleate the other phase. It is recommended that the tevm "divorced" be used in preference to degenerate because it is more desct-iptice of the morphology and mode of forinalion of the structures. ThE variety of structures found in eutectic alloys has been extensively investigated and classified. The most accepted classification is the one by ~cheil,&apos; in which three different types of eutectic were distinguished: 1) normal, 2) anomalous, 3) degenerate (divorced). ATornlal eutectics are typified by the simultaneous growth of the two phases ("coupling") by which the two phases appear as interpenetrating crystals. The presence of a crystallization front, in which the two phases grow side by side, creates the eutectic grains, with the boundaries where the fronts meet. The presence of eutectic grains is the .distinguishing feature of a normal eutectic, according to Scheil. Straumanis and Brakss2 examined the Cd-Zn system and showed that there was a crystallographic relationship between the phases. Later, others4 also investigated additional systems and found definite crystallographic relationships in the coupled eutectics. The anornalous eutectic shows much less coupling than the normal; the two phases are intimately mixed but &apos;grow without a uniform crystallization front—a consistent crystallographic relationship— and the eutectic grain is conspicuously absent. As in the normal eutectics faster rates of growth result in a finer structure, but there is not the typical uniform spacing of normal eutectics. The degenerate eutectic shows no coupling; in fact the two phases attempt to minimize their area of contact and to form separate crystals. It has been suggested5" that slow cooling may favor this type of structure. Scheil believes that normal eutectics are formed when the two solid phases are present in more or less equal proportions, whereas both anomalous and degenerate eutectics form when one of the phases is present only in small amounts. spengler7 extended much farther this qualitative relationship between the eutectic type and the ratio of the two phases, and added a relationship to the melting point of the constituents. On this basis he proposed two equations for determining into which of Scheil&apos;s classifications an alloy belongs. The first equation is: where TI is the melting temperature of the lower-melting component, Tp of the higher-melting component, and Te the eutectic temperature. The second equations is: where is the volume percent of the lower-melting phase and $2 of the higher-melting phase at the eutectic composition. If 0 and/or 4 are in the range 0.1 to 1, a normal eutectic is formed; if in the range 0.01 to 0.1, anomalous; if less than 0.01, degenerate. Although the examples given by Spengler show a good agreement with the formulas, chadwick found that the Zn-Sn eutectic is normal to all growth rates, even though the volume ratio is 12/1, and Davies9 reports that the A1-AlgCo2 eutectic is normal, with a volume ratio of more than 30/1. Many more discrepancies of this type can also be found. Neither Scheil nor most of the other investigators have considered nucleation as a factor in the formation of divorced eutectics. A mathematical tnodel of forward combustion in an oil reservoir is treated in this paper. The model describes a radial system having a vertical section of essentially infinite thickness, all of which is permeable to gas flow. Combustion, however, is presumed initiated over a limited thickness of the total vertical section. In the interval supporting cotnbustion, the mechanisms of radial conduction, convection and heat generation are taken into account. Above and below the burning interval, heat transport in the radial direction is by cottduction and convection. Vertical heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by conduction alone. A general solution is presented for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the combustion front. The results show that no feedback of heat occurs into the ignited interval when convection and conduction are acting in the bounding media. Peak temperatures are also 5 to 10 per cent higher than in the case where heat transport in the bounding media is by conduction alone. We arbitrarily define vertical coverage to be that fraction of the total ignited interval which is at 600F above atnbient, or greater, at any given time. The radial distance at which the vertical coverage becomes zero is the propagation range of the combustion front. It was found that an increase in vertical coverage results when the oxygen concentration, fuel concentration or gas-injection rate is increased. Moreover, the combustion front can be propagated 10 to 15 per cent further than in the case where only conduction is acting above and below the ignited interval. INTRODUCTION In the theoretical treatment of forward combustion in a radial system, one of the problems encountered is the determination of the transient temperature distributions caused by an expanding cylindrical heat source. Bailey and Larkin&apos; and Ramey&apos; simultaneously presented analytical solutions to the problem assuming heat transport by conduction alone. In a subsequent publication, Bailey and Larkin3 included the effects of both conduction and convection while treating linear and radial models. In this latter work, however, vertical heat losses were largely neglected. Selig and Couch&apos; dealt with a radial model in which both conduction and convection were acting. Only a limiting case involving vertical heat losses was considered, however. Namely, temperatures on the boundary of the bed of interest were set equal to zero. Solutions thus obtained were representative of a system having a maximum vertical heat flux. Chu5 recently treated a more general case in which a permeable bed was considered bounded by impermeable media. Conduction and convection took place within the bed, and only conduction outside of the bed. The effects of vertical heat losses were included in his study. Solutions were obtained by numerical techniques. This paper is an extension of the theoretical work of other authors pertaining to forward combustion in a radial system. In particular, a mathematical model of the process is treated in which heat generation occurs over a small vertical interval of a larger permeable section. In the interval supporting heat generation, and above and below this interval, the mechanisms of radial conduction and convection are also presumed acting. Heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by vertical conduction. An analytical solution for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the burning front is presented. The effects of certain process variables are indicated and comparisons with Chu&apos;s results are made. THEORY To render the mechanism of forward combustion tractable to mathematical treatment, we idealize the problem to the extent of assuming continuous reservoir media possessing homogeneous and isotropic properties. The following additional assumptions are implicit in this analysis. 1. The thermal parameters, i.e., heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities are invariant with temperature and pressure. Moreover, the bounding media possess the same thermal properties as the bed of interest. 2. The temperatures of the porous media and its contained fluids at any point and at any time are equal. 3. The reaction rate between the oxidant gas and the fuel is infinite. This assumption implies that the incoming oxygen concentration instantaneously goes to zero within an infinitesimal distance, i.e., the width of the combustion zone is negligible. 4. The rate of gas injection is constant and corresponds to the average rate throughout the lifetime of the project. 5. The fuel concentration is constant throughout the volume of rock swept out by the burning zone. 6. There is complete burnoff of fuel. This assumption demands that the rate of propagation of the burning front equals the rate of fuel burnoff. In a radial system, with a

THE Chivor emerald field is situated on the eastern slope of the Andes in the Department of Boyacá, at an elevation of about 8000 ft. above sea level. It overlooks the Llanos (plains) of the Orinoco and is watered by many streams flowing into the Rio Meta, the Orinoco&apos;s largest tributary. The Rio Meta is navigable from the Orinoco to a point within about 50 miles of the Chivor district and may eventually prove to be the reasonable outlet for the future development of this part of the country. The topography of the district is extremely rugged and mountainous (Fig. 1), the difference in elevation between two points on a mining claim 1 km. square being sometimes as much as 4000 ft. The ground is covered with dense forest growth and the available timber is suitable and sufficient for mining purposes, but it is becoming gradually depleted by Indian clearings as the country around the mines becomes settled. The many streams combined with the rough topography give good possi-bilities for hydroelectric power. The center of population nearest to Chivor is Bogota, the capital of the republic and a city of some 300,000 inhabitants; the distance is two and one-half days&apos; travel. The first stage of the journey from Bogota, is accomplished by rail to Chocontá, some 4 hr. travel. From Chocontá the journey is made in the saddle, one night being spent in Guateque. The latter is a small town and the nearest post office to the mines, being some 10 hr. ride distant. The roads are mere bridle paths, in parts hazardous and almost impassable in the wet season. All supplies brought to the mines, other than those produced locally, are carried by pack mule; mule freight from Chocontá costs 3 centavos1 per pound. The climate of the Chivor district is healthful and bracing. The wet season begins in March and concludes in November, the remaining months being dry. The annual precipitation is about 150 in. The temperature throughout the year is nearly constant, varying from about 45° F. to about 65° F. shade temperature. The rains are cold and unpleasant, and for the greater part of each day in the wet season the country is shrouded in dense mist. The ground is covered with dense forest growth and the available timber is suitable and sufficient for mining purposes, but it is becoming gradually depleted by Indian clearings as the country around the mines becomes settled. The many streams combined with the rough topography give good possibilities for hydroelectric power. The center of population nearest to Chivor is Bogoth, the capital of the republic and a city of some 300,000 inhabitants; the distance is two and one-half days&apos; travel. The first stage of the journey from BogotB is accomplished by rail to Choconta, some 4 hr. travel. From Choconth the journey is made in the saddle, one night being spent in Guateque. The latter is a small town and the nearest post office to the mines, being some 10 hr. ride distant. The roads are mere bridle paths, in parts hazardous and almost impassable in the wet season. All supplies brought to the mines, other than those produced locally, are carried by pack mule; mule freight from Choconth costs 3 centavos1 per pound. The climate of the Chivor district is healthful and bracing. The wet season begins in March and concludes in November, the remaining months being dry. The annual precipitation is about 130 in. The temperature throughout the year is nearly constant, varying from about 45" F. to about 65" F. shade temperature. The rains are cold and unpleasant, and for the greater part of each day in the wet season the country is shrouded in dense mist. THE mine and plant of the United Verde Copper Co., located in Yav-api County, at Jerome, Arizona, have been described in various technical publications and, therefore, a brief outline of its essential features will suffice. The orebodies are of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron-schist contact, with the orebodies extending about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. The mine is located on a mountain slope and has openings into it on three horizons, as follows: 1. Raises and ore passes open vertically into the shovel pit. These extend down to the 1000-ft. level, where they terminate as loading bins in the Hopewell adit. The main fan intake air shaft, which also extends vertically down to the 1000-ft. level, has its surface opening on the hillside at the extreme north end of the shovel pit, and the main mine air return exhausts through a raise at the extreme south end of the shovel pit. 2. The 500-ft. level adit. 3. The Hopewell adit on the 1000-ft. level. The mine has a vertical downward extent of 2000 ft. below the 1000-ft. level. Underground operations are carried on through two main shafts, both of which are wholly underground. Shaft 5 is the ore-hoisting shaft. It has three compartments and extends from the 800 to the 3150-ft. level. Shaft 6 is the service shaft, and is used for lowering and hoisting men and material. It has a large cage compartment and three smaller compartments for counterweights, ladderway, and pipe and power lines. This shaft extends from the 500 to the 2550-ft. level, and is now being extended to the 3000-ft. level. An air shaft for the downward movement of fresh air from the fan has been provided, and extends to the 2550-ft. level at this time. Work has been started to extend this air shaft to the 3000-ft. level. A return airway for vitiated mine air, in the form of raises and short connecting drifts, extends downward to the 2100-ft. level. The underground mining operations extend from the 300 to the 3000-ft. level. There are about 45 stopes in active operation on the 17 levels

IT is common knowledge that the iron orebodies of the Mesabi range lie nearly horizontal and are of trough or blanket-like types. These orebodies are from a few feet to several hundred feet thick and vary from a few acres in extent to the size of the largest one, at Hibbing, Minn., which is over 1 mile wide and 3 miles long. They are covered with sand, boulder and clay overburden and occasionally, shallow depths of ledge material, varying in total depth from about 20 to 200 ft. Large areas are not capped with overlying ledge material; the top of the ore lies directly underneath the surface material. Because of the comparatively great tonnage of ore, open-pit mining has made tremendous strides since the first open-pit ore was shipped from this range by the Merritt brothers, from the Mountain iron mine in October, 1892, and along with the great development of open-pit mining on the Mesabi range has gone a tremendous change in the character of equipment used.
