A common method of classifying non-water- impounding mine waste structures is necessary to facilitate professional comnunications within the industry and between representatives of industry and government. Camnon classifications can a1 so he1 p quickly create and maintain a mental picture of the structures being discussed. Three categories for classification presented in this paper include: (1) configuration and location with respect to existing topography. (2) material characteristics of waste, and (3) environmental sensitivity or characteristic; of the disposal area. Configuration and location classification involve terminologies typically utilized for waste dumps over the past several years. General classification categories for non-impounding structures include: (a) valley-fill, (b) cross-valley, (c) side-hill, (d) ridge, and (e) heaped. Material characteristics can govern the location, engineering details, and environmental sensitivity of the waste structure. Material classification includes: (a) hazardous, (b) non-hazardous, (c) inert, (d) fugitive dust susceptible and (e) leachate susceptible. A1 though many characteristics are potentially applicable, this paper will focus on the categories mentioned above. Environmental sensitivity of a waste structure encompasses many objective and subjective evaluations plus many multi-disciplinary considerations. Environmental sensitivity incorporates numerous factors in addition to those highlighted in configuration and location, and material characteristic classifications. A few examples of how this categorization can govern the engineering design and location of waste dumps are provided in this paper. In addition to the verbal descriptions of classifications, a simplified version of the combined classifications with an alphanumeric format and its methodology is discussed in this paper. Surface water controls often govern the classification or vice versa. In order to maintain a non- impounding status, water must be prevented from collecting behind the structures. Depending on material characteristics, water inflow to or over the site can cause significant environmental or human consequences. Finally, the access of water to the waste dumps can play a large role in the degree of environmental sensitivity to the site. This paper provides a framework in which to discuss the other aspects of this conference and also provides insights as to how the framework is based on actual practice.

A recent investigation has shown that solid solution hardening is almost absent in the quasibinary system SnTe-pbTe.1 The lack of solid solution hardening was attributed to the small difference of only about 3 pct between the atomic sizes of lead and tin, and to the fact that the formation of these solid solutions involved changes only in the sublattice occupied by the lead and tin atoms. The investigation reported here is concerned with the quasibinary system PbSe-PbTe which, similar to the SnTe-PbTe system, forms a continuous series of solid solutions2 and has the same NaC1-type (Bl) structure. The size difference between the selenium and tellurium atoms, however, is slightly larger than 7 pct. No indication of any ordering of the lead and tin atoms at. selected compositions had been found in the system SnTe-PbTe, which had been explained by the weak second-nearest-neighbor interactions between lead and tin atoms.' The possible occurrence of an ordering transition in the system PbSe-PbTe was also investigated in the present work. Polycrystalline specinlens of PbSel-1-xTex (x = 0, 0.20, 0.25, 0.33, 0.50, 0.67, 0.75, 0.80, and 1.0) were prepared by melting appropriate amounts of 99.999 pct pure Pb, Se, and Te j.n evacuated and sealed Vycor capsules. The capsules were quenched in water. The solidified ingots were homogenized at 800°C for 14 days. Chemical analysis of the homogenized ingots showed that the deviations from the stoichiometric compositions were less than 0.1 at. pct for each component. Part of each ingot was ground to pass through a 75 g sieve and pressed into 25.4 mm by 12.7 by 2 mm briquettes. Duplicate sets of specimens, each containing at least one briquette and part of the ingot of each composition, were sealed in evacuated Vycor capsules. Both sets were annealed at 500°C for 7 days; one set was quenced in ice-water and the other was cooled to room temperature over a period of 14 days.

IN the Parkes process of lead refining, after desilverization has been completed by means of zinc additions, there will remain in the lead from 0.5 to 0.6 per cent zinc. At this stage in the refining practically all impurities are reduced to refined lead specifications except zinc and antimony. All excess of copper and nearly all the arsenic goes out with the silver. Silver remaining should not exceed 0.1 oz. per ton. It thus remains only to remove zinc and antimony to produce refined lead. The older practice was to complete refining by means of oxidation processes in reverberatory furnaces. Essentially this consisted of heating the lead to 1200° to 1300° F. and allowing it to come in contact with a considerable excess of air passing through the furnace, or accom-plish the same result by blowing the lead with steam by means of pipes introduced for that purpose, at the same time allowing air to enter the furnace. Usually some procedure involving alternate oxidation and reduction with fine coal or coke was employed in order to reduce the weight of dross or skim finally removed from the furnace. This practice had many elements of weakness in that the main flow of lead, after the preceding expensive operations had been performed, and the whole refining process nearly completed, was subjected to an operation at a comparatively high temperature, which involved much lead loss if the furnaces were not on bags, and the production of 3 to 5 per cent of the weight of the lead as dross or skim, which had to be resmelted and the lead either refined or produced as antimonial lead. In addition, the operating expense of the process was a considerable item. The, process of dezincing with chlorine was developed as a substitute for the foregoing described oxidation process, and finally resulted in such advantages as nearly equal operating costs, a practical elimination of the lead loss, and the direct production of a very valuable byproduct, zinc chloride, that may be sold as such or retreated for its zinc and chlorine contents, both of which can be reused in the refining processes.

A recent paper described, by means of stereographic pole figures, the preferred orientations produced by cold-rolling low-carbon steel of automobile-body grade. It was found that the surface of the sheet exhibited a deformation texture significantly different from the texture possessed by the inside of the sheet. Efforts to produce the surface texture by buffing a sample exhibiting the normal or inside texture, using a copper lap, have not been successful. In view of the data collected by Kurdjumow and Sachs2, it was suggested that the surface texture might be the result of partial recrystallization of the normal or inside texture. The recrystallization texture of cold-rolled mild steel was studied by Goss3, but he did not use the pole-figure method, so that his conclusions were in need of verification. For these reasons the work reported in here was undertaken. It had two objectives: (1) to study the general behavior of cold-rolled mild steel on recrystallization below the critical temperature Al, and (2) to attempt experimentally a demonstaration of the genesis suggested above for the surface texture in cold-rolled steel. The material was that used by Gensamer and Mehl, cold-rolled to 97.5 per cent reduction in thickness. Fig. 1 is an X-ray pinhole photo-gram of this material, taken with the beam transmitted perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, using a molybdenum target at 35 kv. with no filter. It is typical of the inside texture, but in it the deformation texture is better developed than in the samples that showed a well developed difference between the inside and surface samples. Specimens from this sheet, which was 0.005 in. thick, were annealed for 5 min. at various temperatures in a lead bath. After about 0.0005 in. had been etched from both surfaces, X-ray photograms were prepared, using the technique described in the earlier paper1. Figs. 2 to 6 are photograms of the annealed sheet, at 566, 571, 577, 580 and 650" C. (1050' to 1202" F.), in order. Fig. 2 shows that 5 min.

The existence of a grain size stabilization effect on martensitic type reactions as shown by Scheill in an iron-29 pct nickel alloy and by Troiano and Tokich2 in cobalt prompted a review of other martensitic reactions to determine if this stabilization effect is characteristic of all martensite type reactions. Preliminary work has shown this effect to be present both in the gamma —+ epsilon transformation in an iron-20 pct manganese alloy and the martensite transformation of SAE 4140 and 3 pct Cr-O.40 pct steels. No appreciable effect was found in an SAE 2340 steel. The M, temperature for the gamma —+ epsilon transformation was lowered from 380°F to about room temperature by varying the annealing treatment following cold work as shown in Table I. The effect of austenitic grain size on the M, of three steels is shown in Table 2. M, was deter- mined by the conventional quench-temper method of Greninger and Troiano. In a single crystal the change in external shape concomitant with the homogeneous shear mechanism of the martensite transformation can take place unhindered. In a polycrystalline specimen a restraint of these changes must occur at the grain boundaries. Therefore, the smaller the grain size the greater the shear strain energy necessary for the formation of a martensite crystal. The degree of lowering of M, due to the reduction of grain size is much greater when the change in crystal structure involves only a small energy change, such as face-centered cubic —+ close packed hexagonal (that is, CO and Fe-20 pct manganese alloy). The maximum lowering of M, observed in the steels investigated was 50°F with a change in the ASTM austenitic grain size of 1-2 to 8-9. In comparison, the crystal structure change face-centered cubic —+ body-centered tetragonal involves a considerable energy change. There is little doubt that with much finer grain sizes the increased grain boundary restraint would greatly enhance this stabilization effect. The implications of this phenomenon are multifold. IN a recent paper Kuczynski' studied the rate at which the crack between a metallic plane and a spherical particle of the same material is filled up gradually when heated at temperatures near the melting point. If x is the radius of contact between plane and sphere (fig. I), Kuczynski shows experimentally that x5 = At [1] where t is the time. Assuming that the mechanism of transport of matter is the volume diffusion of vacant lattice sites, he is also able to prove Eq 1 theoretically. The constant A contains as a factor the self-diffusion coefficient of the metal and he shows that the values for this coefficient deduced from his experiments yield the same activation energy as that calculated by other methods, which is a confirmation of this point of view. Kuczynski has also considered theoretically the law of growth of x which would be expected if surface diffusion were the important mechanism. He suggests that x should then obey a law of the form x7 = At, and claims to be able to decide the mechanism involved from the observed law of growth., The purpose of this note is to prove this incorrect. On the contrary, when the mechanism is surface diffusion Eq 1 is also obeyed, but with a different constant A. Following Kuczynski, we suppose the bottom of the crack (surface A A) to have an average radius of curvature p. As a result of this curvature the concentration of adsorbed atoms in this surface, n(p) per cm2, will be smaller, and the concentration of vacant lattice sites in the neighborhood, N(p) per cm3, will be larger than the corresponding concentrations, n(w) and N(w), for a flat surface. Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

WhEN basic refractories which contain peri-clase, MgO, are used in steel furnaces, they are altered by iron oxide to form magnesiowiistite, (Mg,Fe)O, and an iron-rich magnesioferrite, (Mg,Fe)Fe2O4. Silica, which is usually present, produces a silicate liquid that surrounds the solid phases. The individual crystalline grains of the above two solid phases grow at elevated temperatures. Previous papersL" showed that, if either periclase or magnesiowiistite is present as the only solid phase, its grain size increases in proportion to temperature and in proportion to the square root of time; the growth rate is reduced slightly if the amount of silicate liquid is increased. Similar results have been observed for iron-rich magnesioferrite.3 To determine the effect of the presence of two solid phases on the rate of grain growth, micro-structural studies have been made on samples containing both magnesiowustite and magnesioferrite. The experimental procedure was the same as that followed in the previous studies of this type.'12 Briefly, this included determination of compositions from the available phase relationships4 that would produce the two phases of interest at the firing temperature and using reagent-grade raw materials to prepare mixtures of these compositions. The mixtures were pressed into pellet-size samples and then fired at the desired time and temperature. The samples were water-quenched to preserve the microstructure present at the firing temperature. Standard reflected-light metallographic techniques were used for sample examination and sample analysis. Grain sizes were determined by measuring the mean diameter of a number of randomly selected grains in a two-dimensional microsection. A large cross section of the sample was covered to prevent biased data resulting from such effects as localized differences in the radius of curvature of the crystal grains. Examination indicates that grain growth is restricted when more than one solid phase is present. This is illustrated in Fig. 1 for: (a) magnesiowustite plus a silicate liquid; (b) magnesioferrite plus a silicate liquid; and (c) magnesiowiistite and magnesioferrite plus a silicate liquid. THE hardenability concept has become widely used during the last few years for the choice and substitution of steels. Before the work of Grossmann,1 the systems for predicting hardenability from chemical composition could be used only over a narrow range of composition. Grossmann introduced a comprehensive system, which has been effective in calculating the hardenability of most types of moderate or low-alloy steels. However, occasions .often arise that require the calculation of the hardenability of high-alloy steels from their chemical compositions. Experimental determinations of the hardenabilities of such steels indicate that the Grossmann system predicts much greater hardenabilities than are realized. The fact that cases do arise in which the Grossmann method does not, apply indicates that the fundamental hypothesis of the system may not be generally applicable. It seems advisable to re-examine not only Grossmann's system but also the concept of hardenability itself. HARDENABILITY If steel parts are to possess a martensitic structure after quenching, they must first be austenitized and then cooled through the pearlite and bainite transformation ranges sufficiently rapidly to avoid the formation of pearlite, bainite, and proeutectoid products.* If, on cooling, these transformations are avoided, the resulting structure can consist only of martensite (and retained austenite). The hardenability of a steel is measured in terms of the severity of the cooling conditions necessary to avoid the pearlite and bainite transformations. The less rapid is the cooling necessary to prevent the formation of bainite and pearlite, the higher is the hardenability. The pearlite and bainite reactions appear to be differently affected by the alloying elements. Not only is this indicated by the published isothermal transformation data, but recent work by Zener2 affords a rational interpretation of the differing effects of the alloying elements. Manganese,3 for example, appears to decrease the rates of the pearlite and bainite transformations by equal percentages, while molybdenum4,5 is approximately 10,000 times more effective in retarding the pearlite than in retarding the bainite transformation, on the basis of isothermal measurements. THE Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140° 06' N., Long. 86° 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Teguci-galpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle P. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 lb. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo service. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced.

ZINC, in its wrought form, is produced commercially in rolled strip, sheet, wire, rod and tubing. Wire has been made periodically, but due to the fact that slight drafts are necessary, the cost of production is greater than for the more common non-ferrous metals which are made into wire. Notwithstanding the cost, zinc wire has certain special uses for which it is particularly adaptable. Rod has been made both by rolling and extrusion; the product, however, has not indicated great commercial value. Tubing has been made from strip from time to time by forming a strip around a mandrel and either electrically or gas-welding a longitudinal joint. Recently a tube manufacturer has succeeded in making a fair quantity of this material. Its commercial adaptability is still to be determined but anyone who desires it can obtain quantities of the smaller sizes. Inasmuch as strip and sheet are commercially the most important, this paper will be devoted to these products. In the broader sense, zinc is not alloyed. That is, there are no combinations comparable to the various copper, aluminum and nickel alloys. It has been recognized for some time that the lead and cadmium occurring with commercial zinc have some effect on its properties and such alloys as may be said to exist are those made from zincs containing varying amounts of lead and cadmium with a relatively low iron content. The foreign rolled zinc will analyze higher in lead than the domestic grades. A representative foreign analysis will run 1.1 per cent. lead, 0.07 per cent. cadmium and 0.02 per cent. iron. The American grades vary from zinc approximating high grade and analyzing 0.08 per cent. lead, 0.002 per cent. cadmium and 0.015 per cent. iron, to the lower grades in which the lead will vary from 0.3 to 1.0 per cent., cadmium from 0.10 to 0.5 per cent. and the iron in the neighborhood of 0.02 percent. Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co. has modified the German Pott-Broche process, on which patents date back to 1927, to produce on a bench scale liquid products by solution hydrogenation of coal. A continuing program of lignite solution-hydro gena-tion experiments is directed toward investigating coal solution reactions, determining favorable conditions for the solution refining of lignite by the Pott-Broche process, and investigating some of the uses for the de-ashed product obtained from lignite The German Pott-Broche process1" on which patents date back to 1927, has been modified by the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co., a Gulf Oil subsidiary, to produce on a bench scale liquid products by solution -hydrogena-tion of coal." The objectives of the present effort are to investigate coal solution reactions, to determine favorable conditions for the solution refining of lignite by the Pott-Broche process, and to investigate some of the uses for the de-ashed product obtained from lignite. This paper is a summary of results to date in a continuing program of lignite solution-hydrogenation experiments. The coal solution reaction program has several principal aims. The first of these is to determine whether lignite can be successfully dissolved in solvents that might be practical for commercial development. The second object is to determine whether the solvents function after successive cycles of use, recovery, and reuse. It seems necessary to the economics of a potential commercial process that the solvent be recycled. Third, it is desired to learn something about the distribution of the ash constituents between cake and filtrate. The extent of ash removal is important. The nature and quantity of mineral matter passing through the filter may determine end-use marketability. For certain use applications, trace quantities of certain minerals can be objectionable, e.g., titanium and vanadium must be very low in electrode carbon for aluminum production. The Solution Reaction The coal solution Process involves an extremely complex system of chemical reactions. An initial solvent such as anthracene oil is a mixture of hundreds of different compounds with a boiling range of roughly 500" to 750°F at atmospheric pressure. The coal macro-molecule is broken down by thermal decomposition and solvent action into myriads of different compounds, some the same as those comprising the solvent. This similarity in structures opens up the possibility of production and subsequent recovery of solvent. Some solvent is inevitably lost by reaction. Regeneration of solvent was not a problem in the early German Pott-Broche plant. The coal refinery was an integral part of a petroleum refinery complex and replacement solvent was readily available. A coal refinery using lignite, however, might be isolated from other hydrocarbon processing facilities and the regenerability of solvent could be vital to the economic success of the venture. Several structural features of the solvent molecules have been cited as important to the coal solution process.'. The first of these is aromaticity of the material, the second, ability to transfer hydrogen to another molecule, as for example the ability of tetralin to transfer hydrogen and be converted to naphthalene. Finally, the presence of hydroxyl groups on aromatic rings within the molecule, i.e., phenolic character, seems beneficial. Mixtures of pure compounds have been tried by various investigators. Mixtures of o-cresol, a phenolic substance, and tetralin were found to dissolve bituminous coal better than either substance alone.3 This maximum solubility was not found with lignite." Hydrogen contributes to the reaction by hydro-genolysis and by combining with free radicals and molecular "loose ends" to stabilize the compounds formed in coal depolymerization. High boiling point, and correspondingly high molecular weight, seems to be a property which improves solution potential for coal with a given type of compound.' The maceral components of the coal appear to have an important bearing on its ease of solution. The fusain portion is quite inert to solvent action, but the an-thraxylon material dissolves quite readily.3 The hydrogenation reaction can be improved by the use of a catalyst; commercial hydrogenation catalysts having been found effective. Although cost is involved in the use of catalyst and catalyst recovery, the resulting saving in time and perhaps lowered temperature or pressure might justify their use in the solution refining process and decrease the total process costs. Apparatus and Procedure The coal solution runs were made in a 1-gal stainless steel stirred autoclave. The autoclave was provided with thermocouple wells and a transducer to permit continuous recording of temperature and pressure. The autoclave stirrer was magnetically driven, eliminating the leakage inherent with a rotating pressure seal. For runs in which a catalyst was used, the catalyst in the form of beads was placed in a wire mesh container mounted on the stirrer shaft. A control system programmed the heatup and reaction cycle. The permissible heating rate was 5°F per min because of the need to minimize thermal stress in the autoclave body. The temperature was raised at that rate until the reaction temperature was attained and then the temperature was held constant for the desired length of time. The maximum temperature seldom exceeded the average run temperature by more than 15°F.

The rate of internal sulfidation of austenitic Fe-Ti alloys in H2S-H2 gas mixtures is controlled primarily by sulfur diffusion, with counterdiffusion of titanium playing a minor role. At temperatures below 1100°C, enhanced diffusion along grain boundaries becomes important. The rate of internal sulfidation at 1300°C is approximately equal to the rate computed from the sulfur diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficient of titanium in y iron has been determined from electron microprobe traces in the base alloy near the subscale interface. The solubility of sulfur in Fe-Ti alloys has been measured in the temperature range from 1150° to 1300°C. The equilibrium sulfur content is found to increase with titanium content, due to the large effect of titanium on the activity coefficient of sulfur. The Ti-S interaction becomes stronger as the temperature decreases. TITANIUM as an alloying element in stainless steels is an effective scavenger for interstitial impurities, carbon in particular. Titanium is known to form stable sulfides; however extensive thermodynamic data on the Ti-S system are not available. Schindlerova and Buzek1 have shown that the Ti-S interaction in liquid iron is moderately strong. There have been no previous studies of the Ti-S interaction in solid iron. Internal sulfidation of Fe-Mn alloys was the subject of a recent investigation by Herrnstein.2 He found the rate of internal sulfidation to be an order of magnitude greater than predicted from available solubility and diffusivity data. A satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy could not be given. In the present study, the solubility of sulfur in austenitic Fe-Ti alloys was measured using a standard gas equilibration technique. Fe-Ti alloy specimens were also internally sulfidized. The rate of internal sulfidation was measured as a function of temperature and alloy composition. Supplementary electron micro-probe measurements were made to provide additional information on the nature of the internal sulfidation process. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were alloys containing 0.12, 0.24, 0.38, and 0.54 wt pct Ti. The alloys were made in an induction furnace by adding titanium to electrolytic iron that previously had been vacuum-carbon-deoxidized. The major impurity in the alloys as determined by chemical analysis was carbon. The carbon content of the alloys averaged about 100 ppm; metallic impurities were presented in concentrations of 50 ppm or less. Specimens were made in the form of flat plates, 0.03 by 2 by 4 cm for the equilibrium measurements and 0.5 by 1.5 by 3 cm for the rate measurements. The experiments were performed in a vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction tube. In the gas train, flow rates of the reacting gases were measured using capillary flow meters. The source of H2S was a mixture of approximately 2 pct H2S in H2, which was obtained in cylinders from the Matheson Co. A chemical analysis was provided with each cylinder. The H2-H2S mixture was diluted with additional hydrogen to obtain the desired ratio of H2S to H2, and the resulting mixture was diluted with 30 pct Ar to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over Pas. The samples used in the solubility measurements were analyzed for sulfur by combustion and iodometric titration. The subscale thickness in the internally sulfidized samples was measured on a polished cross section, using a microscope with a micrometer stage. Electron microprobe traces for titanium in solution were made on several samples that had been internally sulfidized. A Cambridge microanalyzer was used, and the known titanium content at the center of the specimen was used as a calibration standard. The procedure for the microprobe measurements will be described further when the results are presented. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Equilibrium Data. Fig. 1 shows the sulfur concentration as a function of gas composition for three alloys equilibrated at 1300°C. The dashed line is based on data published by Turkdogan, Ignatowicz, and pearson3 for pure iron. The breaks in the curves are the saturation points for the alloys. The fact that the initial slope decreases with increasing titanium content indicates that titanium interacts strongly with sulfur in solution. To obtain information on the composition of the precipitating sulfide phase, the measurements described in Fig. 1 were extended to higher sulfur partial pressures. These results are shown in Fig. 2. (The initial portions of the curves are reproduced from Fig. 1.) The highest PH2s /pH2 ratio used is believed to be below the ratio required for the formation of a liquid sulfide phase. Time series experiments were used to study the approach to equilibrium in the samples. It was found that equilibrium with the gas phase was reached in less than 4 hr at 1300°C.

IN connection with the question of coal waste and economy in mining, we would call the attention of those interested to an apparatus invented by M. Dernencourt, Superintendent of the Anzin Division of the Anzin Coal Company, North of France. This apparatus is known in France and Belgium under the name of prop screw-jack (vis botte), and has been used with good results in the above-named countries for some years past. M. Ponson gives, in his " Trait6 de I'exploitation des Mines," a description of it (page 533), but as the description given is old, the work not widely known in this country, and as some valuable improvements have been made since, I thought it might be useful to give a description of it, having seen it in 'operation in 1867, while in Europe to attend the great Exposition, and on a scientific tour to the mining districts of France, Germany, Belgium, and Italy. The prop screw-jack is composed of the following pieces : I. The body or column B, Fig. 4 [Plate (I)], of oak or yellow pine, sawed square, the bark taken off, and any length, proportionate to the vein. The smallest are 10 inches diameter at the base, and 9 inches at the top, the height being from 12 to 15 inches less than the size of the vein. In the axis of this column, and at the top end, is a cylindrical opening or hole, C, 22 inches diameter, 10 inches deep, for the screw, S. II. Two wrought-iron rings, R R, to strengthen the two extremities of the column ; the rings must be put on hot. III. A cast,-iron washer, E, with hole in centre a little larger than the screw, to be put on the top of the column, and on which the nut is to rest; the top side of this washer must be faced on the lathe, also the bottom of the nut, to prevent friction. It is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling muds to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2-3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable extent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the ['tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata. Quantitative relations of filter-cake permeability, filtrate viscosity, and rate of filtration have been developed for filtration in the simple laboratory filter.4a,11,12,13 It is obvious, however, that the conditions

Already contributing more than one eighth of the total iron ore used by the Corporation, the expanding Benson mines are destined to become Jones & Laughlin's important source of ore within the next ten years. Remarkable as have been the direct results of Danks's puddler, there are some indirect and incidental results, which are well worthy of study for their intrinsic value and suggestiveness. The success of Danks's machine is due mainly to the nature of the lining and the manner in which it is attached to the walls of the revolving chamber. Herein lies Danks's merit and good fortune. Given such a lining, and the success of the machine, as far as puddling iron is concerned, could easily be predicted. Other important results have, however, been obtained with this machine, which, though clearly explicable, were, nevertheless, unanticipated. These are the increased yield of bar-iron over the pig-iron charged, and the elimination of phosphorus, which, though not absolutely complete, is yet more decided than in the case of hand-puddling. As regards the increased yield, this is merely what we have a right to expect if we consider the puddling process to consist in the oxida tion of the carbon and silicon of the pig by the oxygen of the oxide of iron. That this result is attained, nearly to the extent that the theory requires, in Danks's puddler, and has never been more than partially attained by the most careful experiments in band-puddling, points clearly to the fact that the contact of the molten pig-iron with the oxide of iron is much more intimate and complete in the one instance than in the other. The action of puddling in Danks's machine may be considered to be twofold: first, the removal of the carbon, silicon, and phospho rus of the pig, which is the primary object, and, second, the produc tion of wrought iron direct from the ore, which is entirely an inci dental result. Intelligent metallurgists were not long in recognizing in this latter result a fact of deeper import and greater value than the attainment of a perfect puddling process. A new method
