THE magnetic iron ores of the Rees & Wilder tract, Unaka Mountains, East Tennessee, and North Carolina, so far as examined by me, are peculiar in containing considerable quantities of the mineral zircon in dark red-brown crystals, ranging in size from one-tenth of an inch, or less, to five-tenths of an inch in length. As zircons are decomposed by fusion with alkalies, the constituents may exert some favorable influence upon the iron product, which is generally acknowledged to be of superior quality. Underground operations of the United States Potash Co. at its mine near Carlsbad, N.M., have been continuous since the property was opened about five years ago. Approximately one million tons of potash has been mined and two shafts have been sunk, each to a depth of about 1000 ft. Outstanding in the company's operations is the fact that not a single blasting accident has occurred during the aforesaid period. The purpose of this paper is to describe the blasting practice that has made possible the achievement of this accident-prevention record. The mining method employed in extracting the thick horizontal bed of potash may be described as a double-entry room-and-pillar system. Mine development is kept well in advance of extraction operations, and a three years' supply of ore, at least, is always available. Limits of the orebody have not been determined, and in the present system of mining headings are advanced by a "shortwall" method. This was the first potash ore bed developed in the United States. The nature of the deposit, therefore, was unknown, and it was deemed expedient to outline a conservative mining policy. Later, when more is known about the deposit and certain control ascertained, a "longwall" panel retreating method may be found advisable. The necessity for a domestic supply of potash became a national issue previous to and during the World War. The United States Government came to realize that this country should not be dependent upon foreign sources of potash, and began extensive explorations in many parts of the country, seeking an orebody that would meet the exacting requirements of the domestic market. The Department of Interior, through the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines, made every effort to determine the location of potash deposits and encouraged their exploitation by private capital. Through the combined efforts of the Department of Interior and private industry, the deposit now being worked by the United States Potash Co. was discovered and brought into production.

A study was made of the effect of permeable and impermeable lenses in a reservoir on the production capacity of a well. Both steady-state and unsteady-state data were obtained. An electrical resistivity model was used to obtain the steady-state data and thermal models. were constructed to obtain the unsteady-state data. The productivity of a well is affected very greatly only when the lenses are close to the well. The effect of circular lenses on the productivity ratio can be correlated with the distance from the center of the lens to the center of the well divided by the radius of the lens. When this dimensionless distance is equal to six or greater, the effect of the lenses on production capacity will be negligible. The pseudo steady-state productivity of a heterogeneous reservoir can be predicted using steady-state data. INTRODUCTION Many analytical solutions of reservoir behavior assume that reservoir rock is uniform and homogeneous. Although this assumption is used, all of the data from core analyses and well logging indicate that the reservoirs are heterogeneous. Very little work has been done on the performance of heterogeneous reservoirs. The work of Landrum,l et al. showed that transient phenomena in oil reservoirs could be studied with thermal models. Pickering and Cotman2 used thermal models to study flow in stratified reservoirs and investigated the effect of inhomo-geneities in oil reservoirs on transient flow performance. Loucks3 made a mathematical study of the pressure build-up in a system composed of two concentric regions of different permeability. Root, Silberberg and Pirson4 studied the effect of the growth of the flooded region on water influx predictions using a thermal model consisting of three concentric cylindrical regions of different thermal properties which simulated the aquifer, the flooded region and the unflooded portion of the original hydrocarbon region. Tomme, et a1.5 made a mathematical study of vertical fractures. The object of this investigation was to study the effect of highly permeable and impermeable lenses in the vicinity of the wellbore on the pressure depletion history of the well. Steady-state data were obtained for both conductive and nonconductive lenses that completely penetrated the formation. The lenses were symmetrically located at various distances from the wellbore. The unsteady-state data were obtained on seven thermal models. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE STEADY-STATE DATA The steady-state data were obtained from an electrical resistivity model 30 in. in diameter and approximately 11/2 in. deep. The outside of the model was lined with a 30-in. diameter copper strip, which served as the outer boundary of the reservoir. The bottom was covered with a sheet of plexiglass so that it would be nonconductive. The model was filled with a slightly saline solution. The well size was varied from an 0.064-in. diameter copper wire to a 10-in. diameter copper cylinder. Readings were taken with an impedance bridge using AC current to prevent polarization at the contacts. Copper and wax lenses were used to represent infinitely conductive and nonconductive lenses, respectively. The resistance was first measured for each well diameter with no lenses in the reservoir. Then the conductive and nonconductive lenses were spaced symmetrically at various distances from the well and the resistance read from each lens location. The diameters of the conductive lenses were 3, 1.022 and 0.624 in., and those of the nonconductive lenses were 3, 2.25 and 1.563 in. AT the symposium on gases in metals held at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York in February, 1933, a suggestion was made1 that the term "gases in metals" as now employed is unsuitable as descriptive of the substances usually involved in that term. The Executive Committee of the Iron and Steel Division thereupon appointed a subcommittee, composed of the authors of this paper, to study the "nomenclature involved in the general subject of gases in metals, including the name itself" and to report its findings to the Executive Committee. The subcommittee decided at once to discuss the subject with an "Advisory Council" composed of representative metallurgists, metallographers and analytical and physical chemists in the Pittsburgh district.2 As a result of conferences held by the subcommittee and with the Council, a report with recommendations was submitted to the Executive Committee at an open meeting on Oct. 5, 1933, during the National Metals Congress in Detroit. The report and recommendations were accepted, and the subcommittee was instructed to proceed with the dissemination of the report for the purpose of having its recommendation generally adopted either as it was or in a modified form as a result of further discussion.

In this paper, it is proposed to outline a method for the determination of melting points of those metals and alloys having high fusion temperatures. The application of the method as used to determine the melting points of alloys of tungsten and molybdenum will be given. It will be seen from these results that tungsten and molybdenum form a completely isomorphous series. This is also verified by the accompanying photomicrographs. Tungsten and molybdenum have been found to crystallize in the same system namely, isometric, and the crystal units are cubes. These determinations were made by examining etching pits in the pure metals.

INTRODUCTION Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modern coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modern preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1 ) Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2) Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3) Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits. 4) Dewatering. 5) Rock and trash removal by handpicking on a screen. Fig. 8-1 is a generalized flowsheet of a plant showing the use of screens in the coal preparation process. Table 8-1 shows the vibrating screen equipment utilized in Fig. 8-1

INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also holds true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a 1 million st per yr (910,000 mt/yr) mine was rare, 3-5 million st per yr (2,730,000-4,550,000 mt/yr) mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This great increase in production, made possible through mechanization, requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend to- ward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw-coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics has contributed more than any other factor to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal colliers has added to the need for faster and larger loading facilities. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written ac-

Among engineers engaged in mining coal for river transportation, probably no other subject of equal importance has received so little attention as the methods of transferring into barges and other craft. The liability of all our streams to sodden freshets and their attendant drift and ice-gorges, seems to have had little effect upon the design and construction of what are commonly known as rivertipples, beyond the building of breakwaters, and other similar devices, to guard expensive structures from damage. The first method adopted for such transfer was a simple incline, with a movable cradle, which could be raised or lowered to suit the different stages of water. This system, though limited to a small capacity, and to cars not larger than those commonly used underground, possessed two advantages. The first cost was comparatively small; and, since the structure did not obstruct the channel, there was little risk from freshets, the utmost damage from which could be repaired at small expense. Its disadvantages, however, were many, the principal among them being the breakage of the coal by reason of the necessarily high dump; the damage to barges from the same cause; and the difficulties of screening and distributing the different sizes into separate barges. That system has been almost wholly abandoned of late, in favor of the basket-arrangement, lowering vertically into the barge, with the aid of counter-weights, which return the empty basket; while pipes or chutes convey the small coals into other barges, from a complete set of screens, which this method will readily accommodate. The Tz-Zr system was reinvestigated using both metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. It mas found that titanium and zirconium are soluble in all proportions in both the a and 0 phases. The minimum in the transformation was found at 50 at. pct and 535°C. THE Ti-Zr system has previously been the subject of several investigations.1-6 A study by Hayes et al.5 using magnesium-reduced titanium and zirconium melted in graphite crucibles indicated that the system was a continuous series of solid solutions in both a and 0 phases with a minimum at approximately 545°C and 65 pct* Zr. These conclusions were substantiated by the work of Duwez4 as well as by the limited data of Craighead et al.,3 Fast,2 and deBoer.1 However, a more recent investigation of the titanium-rich region by Ence and Margolin6 indicated that the solubility of zirconium in a, titanium at 500°C is approximately 22 pct with the a + 0 field extending to approximately 47 pct Zr. Therefore in order to resolve this discrepancy the following investigation was initiated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The alloys used in this investigation were prepared as 20- to 30-g buttons by nonconsumable electrode melting in a helium atmosphere. The starting materials were Bureau of Mines titanium BHN 71 and Foot Mineral iodide crystal bar zirconium. The titanium was premelted before the alloys were prepared to avoid excessive weight losses in the final melting. The compositions of the alloys prepared were as follows: Ti-12.0, 22.2, 29.0, 39.6, 50.0, 58.0, 72.4, 83.5. and 90.8 pct Zr. Prior to heat treatment the alloys were cold-worked 10 to 20 pct, stopping at the first signs of cracking. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet and annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules for the following times and temperatures: 750°C-40 days, 675°C-61 days, 600°C—109 days, 575°C-112 days, 550°C-112 days, 525°C—127 days, and 450°C —153 days. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the capsules in an iced-brine solution. The standard techniques used for polishing the specimens involved belt grinding, grinding on emery paper, polishing electrolytically, and etching with Remington "A" etch7 or "R" etch 8 Debye-Scherrer X-ray powder photograms were obtained for a number of samples using a 114.6-mm camera and CuK, radiation. Exposure times were from 19 to 23 hr. The powder samples were obtained by filing to 270 mesh size. After filing the samples were wrapped in molybdenum foil capsuled in quartz and reannealed at the temperature of original heat treatments; following the heat treatment the samples were quenched into iced brine without breaking the capsules. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the microstructural examinations of the heat-treated samples and of the X-ray diffraction data, the Ti-Zr system shown in Fig. 1 was constructed. The data indicate that a, and 0 titanium form a complete series of solid solutions with a, and ß zirconium. The minimum was found to occur at 65 pct (50 at. pct) Zr and 535°C, in excellent agreement with the earlier investigations,1-5 see Fig. 2. Typical microstructures are shown in Figs. 3 to 7. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 show the 22.2, 39.6, and 50.0 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment at 675°C for 61 days with the 22.2 pct Zr showing equiaxed a, and the 39.6 pct Zr alloy a + transformed ß, while the 50 pct Zr alloy shows only transformed B. Figs. 6 and 7 show the 29.0 and 39.6 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment for 109 days at 600°C. The 29 pct Zr alloy has an equiaxed a structure while the 39.6 pct alloy has a partially recrystallized a+ß structure. X-ray diffraction data obtained from the 50 pct Zr alloys after heat treatment at 525° and 450°C as well as from the as-cold-rolled material showed only those lineos which couid be indexed a: a titanium, good agreement with the previously published values. 2,4,5,9 Chemical analysis* of the 50 pct Zr alloy

THE Waelz process produces oxides of volatilizable metals from ores, metalliferous products and residues. The process was originally used for recovering zinc and lead, where tailings and residues containing those metals had accumulated at mines or smelters, but it is applicable for obtaining tin, arsenic or other volatilizable metals. It is useful when other methods of obtaining the metals from the ores or residues are too difficult or expensive or show too low a recovery. The Waelz process was developed in 1923 for the treatment of large calamine dumps in Upper-Silesia, which showed zinc contents of 8 to 10 per cent. and lead contents up to 3 per cent. The rapid development of the process, from the first trials up to the plants now working or in course of erection, is shown in Fig. 1. -The first industrial Waelz plant was started in 1925. Fifteen and 18 pct Ni maraging steel and several binavy and ternary alloys of the iron-rich corner of the Fe-Co-Ni system have been studied. After annealing in the austenite range, these alloys were deformed slightly by cold rolling and subsequently aged. Compavison of experimental measurements at various processing stages indicates that small degrees of deforn~ation (5 to 10 pct reduction in thickness) do not influence hardness and strength or the aging kinetics. Electrical resistivity and ductility are somewhat redu]ced and the coercive force is substantially lower when compared to identical samples which were not deformed. The results are explained in terms of retained austenite which transforms into martensite with the small amount of deformation. RECENTLY there has been increasing interest in maraging steel for applications in electric power generators requiring a high ratio of power to weight.' Fifteen pct Ni maraging steel has been investigated to evaluate its properties and performance for application as high-strength magnetic rotor steel,' and a thorough investigation of the precipitation and transformation processes in this alloy has been conducted in this laboratory.3 The influence of deformation, which preceded the aging treatment, was also studied. It was found that a small deformation in the order of 5 pct has a rather striking effect in reducing the coercive force. Other interesting effects on the properties caused by such deformation have led to the more detailed studies reported herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods used to produce the samples from 15 pct Ni maraging steel have been described elsewhere.3 The general procedure of hot forging and cold rolling to sheet has been followed. The composition is included in Table I which also contains the composition of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel grade 250 studied. More data about the material and the processing of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel have been recently reported.4 The experimental alloys of binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys were made by levitation melting in an argon atmosphere and casting into rod-shaped ingots 7 mm thick weighing 20 g. From these ingots 25-mm-long rods were machined to study the phase transformation by a dilatometer. These rods were then cold-rolled to strips, 2.4 mm thick. Annealing for austenitizing was done in tube furnaces in an argon or helium atmosphere followed by cooling in the water-cooled portion of the tube. Aging was done in a salt bath containing a neutral blend of Alkali nitrates and nitrites. Vickers hardness was measured using a load of 50 kg for 15 sec. Tensile tests were carried out on a hard beam tensile tester at a strain rate of 5 X lo-' per sec using flat samples with a gage length of 37.5 mm and a cross section of 1.25 by 6.25 mm. Estimated sensitivity was 5 K x strain and 0.35 kg per sq mm stress. Magnetic saturation was determined on small cylindrical samples, 2.5 mm in length and diameter, by measuring the force exerted by the gradient of a magnetic field of 1000 oe per cm in a mean field of 11,500 oe. The measured values could be reproduced within *1 pct. Coercive force was measured by a precision-type magnetic field probe in a magnetic coil as described by Foerster.5 The magnetizing field was 1300 oe. The samples were 5 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 2.4 mm thick. he coercive force was measured to within +0.1 oe. Electrical resistivity was measured by using a potentiometer on flat strips with a gage length of 100 mm and a cross section of 2.5 by 0.5 mm. The accuracy of the measurement was 0.1 pct but the reproducibility of the measured specific resistivity among different samples was in the order of 1 pct. The method used to prepare the samples for electron transmission has been reported elsewhere.3 RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the influence of deformation after annealing on the resistivity, hardness, and coercivity. As described in the section on the Palabora twin crushers, the Palabora ore consists of two types: a carbonatite containing a low titanium magnetite, and a foskorite containing high titanium magnetite. As the Palabora pit was widened and deepened, more and more of the foskorite had to be mined. The 25,000 mt expansion of the Palabora plant which went into operation in early 1977 therefore takes its feed from the foskorite section of the orebody. For the expansion, a third 54 in. by 74 in. gyratory crusher was installed to crush feed for two 32 ft by 15 ft (9.75 by 4.6 m), 9000 hp (6710 kw) autogenous single -stage grinding mills. These units are located near the two existing primary crushers, and the ground ore is pumped 5277 ft (1640 m) to the expanded flotation plant by five stages of centrifugal pumps. The new gyratory is installed in a unique Figure-8 shaped enclosure with the crusher in the smaller 27 ft 11 in. (8. 5 m) diameter cylinder and the maintenance area in the 36 ft 1 in. (11 m) diameter cylinder. Cylinder walls are only 23.6 in. (600 mm) thick because their circular design permits all the concrete to be in compression. A rectangular dump pocket which sits on the smaller cylinder contains two manganese steel faced splitters to protect the crusher spider and countersunk water spray headers under the dumping positions for dust suppression. The dump pocket holds 330 st or 300 mt and is also lined with manganese steel. The crusher is mounted on a reinforced concrete diaphragm over the 363 st (400 mt) crushed ore pocket. In the back of the pocket is plastic pipe. Radioactive level control sources are lowered into this pipe from the crusher support floor. The pipe is protected by concrete covered with steel castings. Level control detectors are mounted on the front wall of the pocket. Liner plates on the crushed ore pocket walls are removed and in- stalled by the use of a circular monorail and trolley mounted on the pocket ceiling. The door in the front of the crushed ore pocket is hinged at the top rather than at the sides and is raised by an electric winch. For removal of the eccentric, rails are installed in the pocket and a unique hydraulically operated cart is moved under the eccentric. A platform is raised to receive the eccentric and lowered so that it may be removed. Crushed ore is removed from the pocket by a hydraulically powered, 8 ft

Much has been done of late years to facilitate preliminary stratigraphical investigations, and for examination at considerable depths and in a certain character of material the diamonddrill, in its general forms, certainly stands pre-eminent among the tools for such work. But there are large classes of deposits —indeed, I may say the larger proportion in which ordinary. prospecting is done—which lie near the surface and are interbedded with soft and fine material. The method usually employed for prospecting these is by means of small shafts. These are sunk with considerable slowness and at considerable expense, depending largely upon the character of the material encountered, and are greatly interfered with by water. In this region the smallest are 3 by 4 feet, but they are usually considerably larger. Having had occasion during the past year to do a large amount of prospecting work, I have found the use of a hand-auger and drill of immense value in this respect, and in my practice it has largely superseded, and always preceded, the other forms of investigation. I, 1939, when the Pawnee Royalty Company's Boice No. I well, about 3 miles west of Falls City (NE 1/4 NE 1/4, sec. 18, T.r N., R.16 E., Richardson County) was drilled into the Hunton formation but the develop-ment of the area took place during 1940. After a pumping test lasting 18 days, the Boice well stopped producing and failed to qualify for the State bonus of $ 15,000 offered for the first oil well to produce go bbl. per day for 60 consecutive days. On May 9, 1940, the Pawnee Royalty Company's Bucholz No. I well was completed about M mile southeast of the discovery well and flowed at the rate of about 330 bbl. per day, easily meeting the State bonus requirements. In addition to the discovery well, which later was reconditioned, and the bonus well, 28 producers were drilled in the Falls City field during 1940. Of these wells, 23 are in sec. 20, two are in the northern part 'of sec. 29, two in the southwestern part of sec. 17 and three in the eastern part of sec.

The interest shown recently in selenium and tellurium has brought many requests for an assembling of the analytical chemistry of these two elements. The intention of this paper is to discuss all of the chemical principles utilized in the detection and quantitative determination of these elements, as well as to describe the works methods actually followed by producers of tellurium and selenium in the United States. These methods have been furnished by S. Skowronski of the Raritan Copper Works, H. D. Greenwood of the United States Metals Refining Co., F. F. Colcord of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, and E. W. Rouse and A. E. Hall of the American Smelting and Refining Company. Occurrence Selenium is found associated with sulfur, to which in many respects it is quite similar. Occasionally deposits of native sulfur, notably those in the Lipari Islands, Kilauea, and Japan, show a red-brown coloration, I which is readily distinguished from that of other sulfur; this red-brown * sulfur contains a small amount of selenium. Not infrequently, the , sulfides of the heavy metals are accompanied by selenium and tellurium, • presumably as selenides and tellurides. The interest shown recently in selenium and tellurium has brought many requests for an assembling of the analytical chemistry of these two elements. The intention of this paper is to discuss all of the chemical principles utilized in the detection and quantitative determination of these elements, as well as to describe the works methods actually followed by producers of tellurium and selenium in the United States. These methods have been furnished by S. Skowronski of the Raritan Copper Works, H. D. Greenwood of the United States Metals Refining Co., F. F. Colcord of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, and E. W. Rouse and A. E. Hall of the American Smelting and Refining Company. Occurrence Selenium is found associated with sulfur, to which in many respects it is quite similar. Occasionally deposits of native sulfur, notably those in the Lipari Islands, Kilauea, and Japan, show a red-brown coloration, I which is readily distinguished from that of other sulfur; this red-brown * sulfur contains a small amount of selenium. Not infrequently, the , sulfides of the heavy metals are accompanied by selenium and tellurium, • presumably as selenides and tellurides. Several studies concluded by various agencies (Coal Outlook, 1982; Malhotra, 1977) indicate that both the national and international markets for utility coal, which have been growing in recent years due to the uncertainties in petroleum supplies, will continue to grow in the foreseeable future. The areas where the Gemand for utility coal is projected to increase sub- stantially lie close to the midwestern coal fields, in the southeastern US, and in western Europe. Illinois has all the elements necessary to become an important exporter of thermal coal (Library of Con- gress, 1981) provided the coal is desulfurized to meet the environmental restrictions. Because of its high energy content, Illinois Basin coal, if desulfurized, has great potential for competing in the utility markets both nationally and internationally. Sulfur in coal occurs in organic and inorganic forms. The inorganic sulfur in Illinois coal is almost exclusively pyrite. The pyrite can be liberated by grinding and removed from the coal by such techniques as froth flotation. The Illinois Basin coals reportedly contain (Gluskoter and Simon, 1968) an average of 3.57% sulfur. Out of this, 2.06% is pyritic, 0.08% is sulfate, and 1.46% is organic sulfur.

Need for a standard of ualuration.—There should be an accepted method for evaluating the different kinds of bituminous coals based on their carbon just as that for iron ores is based on iron. Variation in the classes of coals and their desirability fol the different industrial uses is analagous to the case of iron ores. The iron people have developed a standard. In the past coals have not been intelligently distributed because the public has not been informed as to its uses. Many operators have known nothing about the final disposal of the coal shipped from their mines. Sales agents and retailers have had no means of evaluating coals except to make the price as high as the market will stand. Producers and distributors need to know how much more valuable the coals would be if prepared so as to contain less objectionable material. Mr. Swectser cnlletl on the Goal and Coke Committee of the Institnte to organize a study through producers and users to develop a method scientifically and comnereially sound E. A holbrook said that the information exists but the public is unwilling to investigate. He praised Ashley's1 nomenclature of the different kind of coal which has been accepted by the Coal Mining Institute of America and recommended to the American Enginecring Standards Commitee. G. S. Rice pointed out the wider variety and distribution of consumption of coal compared to Iron ore. C'. M. Young approved Mr. Sweetser's remarks and hoped lor a research institution, probably endowed, to study utilization of coal after it comes from the ground. Mr. Sweetser cited incidents to prove his former statements. He said that a reduction of 1 per cent. ash in the coal would cut down the cost of pig iron at a blast furnace 30 c. a ton, that the coal men should tell what the iron men would have to pay to get better coal. H. J. Prryn endorsed the need of blast-furnace operators to know the kind of coal from which their- coke is made and the latler's ash content, as this affects coke consumption. A. C.
