In 1950 the phosphate fertilizer market warranted the design and construction of a new fertilizer plant by Cominco at Kimberley, B.C. The initial rated capacity of the plant was 70,000 tons per year of high- grade ammonium phosphate. The plant was placed on-stream in 1953. One of the major problems in operating the fertilizer plant was the disposal of the gypsum tailings slurry which was a by-product of phosphoric acid manufacture. The original weight of dry tailings produced by the mill was 500 tons per day. This quantity increased over the years until a projected 2200 tpd was selected for the pond design described in this paper. The original gypsum tailing area was located south of the fertilizer plant and adjacent to the St. Mary's River. By 1965 the original disposal area had proven inadequate and Cominco's engineering staff had selected a 500 acre disposal site to the east of the plant.

Measurements have been made of solute segregation during dendrilic growth by using radioactive solute elements and ,measuring the activity of den(12-ites cut from decanted specimens. This has been done for both lead awl tin based binary alloys contaitzing the following solute additions: Ag, T1204, was dependet on ko, the equilibrium distribution coefficient in the following way Fay k &apos;c 0.1, C/C 0.6; for k0 >0.1. 0.6 <c,/c,< I. Qualitative obse?-vations were madc of dendritic segregation, by using autoradiographic techniques, for the Sn + Ag110 and Sn + Tlo4 systems. The observation were found to he in general agreement with the measurements ofCA/Co. Autoradiographic were also obtained of scctiolccl delzr11-iie stalks. These indicated that the stalks had a substructure, dclileated by solute corzetlt?atio?zs nlolg the substructure walls. A new dendrite growth direction <JI2> is reported for tila. SOLUTE segregation in dilute binary alloys has been investigated by Pfann,&apos; Smith, Tiller, and Rut-ter,&apos; and others. They considered the case of a slowly advancing plane solid interface, and derived expressions for the distribution of solute in both solid and liquid during solidification. To determine these expressions, they assumed no diffusion in the solid and either complete mixing in the liquid:&apos; or diffusion controlled solute movements in the liquid without any convective mixing.&apos; The present investigation considers solute segregation during dendritic growth, in which case the solid-liquid interface is not plane, and the growth rates are rapid. Segregation under these growth conditions has not been treated mathematically, because of the relative complexity of the system. It has been suggested by Chalmer, on the basis of preliminary results, that an alternative to the diffusion and heat flow controlled conditions during growth is &apos;diffusionless" dendritic growth in which solid is formed with the same composition as the liquid. He suggests this type of growth may depend upon a solvent-solute relationship that permits some solid solubility without excessive increase in internal energy, as is the case for solutions of tin in lead. On the other hand, Montariol,4 and others, have shown experimentally that some segregation does occur during dendritic growth in metals using etching and radioactive tracer techniques to indicate the concentrations of the solute. The present investigation was undertaken to determine, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the extent of solute segregation associated with dendritic growth in a series of binary alloys, as a function of solute concentration. PROCEDURE The solvent materials used were Vulcan Electrolytic tin (99.997 pct purity) and Tadanac lead (99.998 pct purity). The solute materials were Zn, Sn, and Sb (better than 99.998 pct purity), Ag and Co (99.5 pct purity), and T1 (Fisher "purified" metal sticks). Activation of the solute metals was carried out in the reactor at Chalk River, Canada. Master alloys were prepared by induction heating from the radioactive solute metal and the pure solvent, under argon, in graphite crucibles. Pieces of these alloys were then added to the solvent to give the required solute concentration. Dendrites were grown in essentially the same manner as that described by Weinberg and Chalmer, , in which controlled orientation single crystals were grown dendritically in horizontal graphite boats, and the liquid decanted. The crystals were grown and decanted in an atmosphere of tank argon. Before decanting, a sample of the liquid was drawn up in a glass tube and allowed to solidify rapidly. The orientations of the single crystals were such that <loo> was parallel to the growth direction, and (100) in the horizontal plane for lead, and [1101 and (110) respectively for tin. With these orientations long dendrite stalks formed along the bottom of the boat in the dendrite direction (<100> for lead and [I101 for tin) from which secondary branches grew. Only these secondary branches, which grew freely in the liquid from the dendrite stalk to the liquid surface, were used in the measurements. Accordingly, effects due to substrates and oxides on the surface of the liquid need not be considered. The state of Kansas in 1931 continued to hold fourth place on the list of oil-producing states, despite the fact that low prices for crude oil curtailed drilling to just one-half the amount done in 1930, which itself was the lowest in the preceding 10 years. The estimated crude oil production for 1931, according to sources available to the writer, will approximate 37,037,000 bbl., the lowest since 1925. Thus Kansas produced one-eighth less oil this year than it did last year when it produced 42,729,085 barrels. This year&apos;s development was characterized by a very small amount of wildcat drilling; however, large new areas were semiproven for oil production, and several thousands of acres were added to the actually proved areas in western Kansas, so that the state now has larger proven areas of oil reserves than at any time in its history since the heyday of the famous El Dorado pool. The general prospects for oil production in the near future are indeed promising for central western Kansas, where drilling costs are moderate and depths are relatively shallow compared to the remaining unexplored parts of the northern Mid-Continent area. Probably the greatest singular achievement in the state for 1931 was the development of its natural gas reserves. This development took place principally in two spots, McPherson County in central Kansas, and Stevens and Morton counties in southwestern Kansas, and it is a matter of record that more than one and one-half billion cubic feet of open-flow capacity per day were added to reserves, nearly twice the amount developed in 1930, previously the largest amount in the history of gas development in Kansas. Gas pipe lines already built and now building are in position to deliver natural gas by one system to Chicago, Ill., by another to Indianapolis, Ind., from whence lines already lead practically to the Atlantic seaboard, and to other cities large and small located west, northwest, north and northeast of Kansas. Table 2 shows all well completions for 1931 in a form to compare with the results of previous years.

The work describes a heretofore unreported surface flow pattern on drop surfaces From a practical point of new, any motion in the interface of a droplet can have a significant effect of mass transfer rates in solvent extraction processes Although surface motion in droplets actual processing equipment is very complex, continued study of the fundamental nature of such phenomena should ultimately lead to more effective equipment design procedures.

ADEQUATE treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ-from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has. been termed ?intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence-air, water, food. But " intrinsic value " cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed " intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may be intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term "intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of " intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent. Intrinsic value must from its nature be permanent and unchangeable.

INTRODUCTION Common methods of controlling gob gas in U.S. mines are by means of ventilation of gob areas and gas drainage through surface boreholes. Costs of drilling surface gob holes increase as deeper coal- beds are mined. Where gob holes cannot be drilled because of topography, ventilation is the only means of control. Even then, sufficient air may not be available to dilute methane in the bleeder entries to acceptable levels. Thus, new methods of gob gas control need to be developed that are independent of surface topography, and of the mine ventilation system, and less costly than present systems. Except for slight variations in procedures and equipment, Great Britain, West Germany, France, Belguim, Poland, and Czechoslovakia use a common methane control method that is different from the system generally used in the United States. This Bureau of Mines paper reviews European mining methods, mining conditions, and methane control technology and discusses their applicability to U.S. mines.

ARSENIC is a very old substance. The ancients speak of it in their writings, and its use has developed very little until recent years. The ancients used it in making pigments, in medicine, and for poison. They also tell of the difficulties of handling it-an experience which is very similar to our own. Until about 10 years ago, arsenic was very cheap and was a drug on the market. About that time the boll weevil began making serious inroads on the American cotton crops, and after much investigation the Depart-ment of Agriculture developed a very successful poison for this pest, consisting of calcium arsenate. The weevil pest has continued, and as the cotton planters have become convinced that calcium arsenate is the best material to use against the weevil, the demands for it have been steadily increasing, resulting not only in a rising price of arsenic but in a very serious shortage so far as our country is concerned. So serious has this shortage become, and so vital is it to the cotton growing industry, that Congress has appointed a committee to investigate and report on the situation. A meeting of arsenic producers and consumers was held in New York last December to take stock of the situation and to see what could be done. The extreme increase in, the market price of arsenic-from 6 c. to 15 c. per lb. in less than a year-has been very harmful to the producers as well as to the consumers. As part of the mine permitting process as delegated by the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977 the regulatory authority must assess the probable hydrologic consequences and cumulative hydrologic impacts of surf ace mining. The U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM), in conjunction with Energy & Minerals Technology Assessment and ENCORE Systems Inc., has developed a user friendly groundwater model that is capable of predicting the effects of surface mining on groundwater quality and quantity. The model is a variation of the Prickett-Lonnquist model which has been modified to be specifically applicable to surface mine applications. This model is presently being used by OSM, the states, and industry to determine mining impacts on groundwater resources. The model is designed for use by the hydrologist with minimal computer training. The model accounts for multiple pumping wells, injection wells, multiple mine pits, and mine pit movement through time. This paper presents an example of how the model may be used in permit application review and how the model can be used by industry to simplify permit preparation.

In discussing the subject of mineral exploration, one is tempted to resort to reminiscence. I could tell of many missed opportunities, but I propose rather to outline certain changes in the methods and conditions of exploration which present new problems to the mineral explorers of today. Our subject might appropriately be called The Passing of the Old Time Prospector. The first question that presents itself is whether the job of mineral exploration is not already pretty well finished. The current market surplus of most minerals and the present overcapacity for production, with their attendant financial troubles, naturally raise the question whether the accumulation of reserves has not gone far enough for the present, and whether further exploration should not be left to some future time when consumption shall have caught up. Unquestionably we have gone far in the conquest of our physical environment, and the fear of shortage of minerals is less than formerly. For the time being there is no great need of further supplies for the world as a whole of many of the great essential minerals, coal, oil, copper, zinc, silver, and others. For a few minerals, such as gold and lead, the known future world supplies are not yet large enough. For all minerals the distribution is so unequal among the nations that exploration will continue in deficient areas in the attempt to make nations self-supporting.

Until the advent of the porphyry coppers and the introduction of flotation which soon followed, crushing and grinding for many years proceeded along somewhat stereotyped lines, without important alteration in type of machinery. For the finer crushing and grinding, stamps, rolls, and various patterns of Huntington and Chilean mills were in general use. Ball-mills were in use abroad, but owing to their small capacity and the high cost of screens and steel, they never obtained much footing in the United States. Tube-mills were first introduced into the crushing departments of cyanide plants when it was found that for crushing finer than 30-mesh other types of crushing machinery were not efficient. In order to crush with one pass, these mills were made 18 to 22 ft. (5.5 to 6.7 m.) in length. Pebbles were used as a grinding medium and the mills were lined with either silex blocks or fragments of quartz or flint pebbles set in cement. While the cylindrical tube pebble-mill had been used to some extent in small installations of concentration mills, the first instance of its use on a large scale was at the concentrating plant of the Miami Copper Co., where 8-ft. by 22-in. (2.5-m. by 55.9-cm.) Hardinge mills were tried out against Chileans. The results of these experiments led to the gradual replacement of the Chilean by the Hardinge mill. Robert Franke published an article&apos; describing the work done, comparing the two types of mills. At the same time, according to Franke, a test was run using a 6-ft. (1.8-m.) Hardinge ball-mill as a substitute for rolls for intermediate crushing on 1/2-in. material. According to Franke, this mill was soon discarded, since it was found that to obtain the desired product the mill must be limited in capacity. The Miami Copper Co. made no test with other types of ball- or pebble-mills. Following this example, others installed the conical type; and when the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. decided to build a concentrator, it adopted the conical mill. The basic principles and assumptions involved in D. L. White&apos;s solution5 for ultrasonic wave amplification in piezoelectric semiconductors are summarized. If the gain per unit length is maximized at each frequency without regard to the drift-field power density, the gain increases linearly with frequency. Therefore it would seem that very high gain is possible for frequencies in the hundreds of megacycles. However, with present materials the resulting drift-field power density is so large that cooling would be a major problem. For this reason it is more realistic to judge the capabilities of an ultrasonic amplifier in terms of the gain that is possible with a specified power density. In this case the gain at high frequencies does not increase but decreases more rapidly than l/f. The calculation of the gain us frequency at a fixed power level involves the repeated solution of a cubic equation and is therefore tedious. For the purpose of comparing different materials, sufficient accuracy can be obtained from an approximate solution which may easily be plotted as three straight lines on logarithmic graph paper. This method is used to compare the Performances of CdS, CdSe, ZnO, and GaAs. At a power density of 10 watts per cu cm, the first three give maximum gains of 60 to 80 db per cm in the vicinity of 60 megacycles. At the same power density, GaAs has a maximum gain of about 7 db per cm near 150 megacycles. Although an increase in mobility usually increases the gain for a specified power density, it is shown that there is an optimum mobility above which the gain decreases. An approximate expression for the optimum mobility is established. It is well-known that the interaction between charged particles and an electromagnetic wave can be used to amplify the electromagnetic wave. In the conventional traveling-wave tube, electrons in a vacuum are caused to move at a velocity slightly greater than the wave velocity, thereby coupling energy into the wave.&apos; In principle, the same effect would be evident in a solid except that repeated collisions prevent the electrons from attaining a velocity greater than that of an electromagnetic wave. However, the drift velocity of electrons can be made to exceed the velocity of an acoustic wave in a solid. In 1956, weinreich2 noted that the deformation potential provided one means of coupling energy from drifting electrons into an acoustic wave, but the effect was too small to be of any practical importance. It was not until 1961 that White and Hutson demonstrated that the piezoelectric effect provided a strong enough coupling to give appreciable amplification of an ultrasonic wave and awakened wide interest in electron-phonon interactions. Qualitatively the effect may be described as follows. An acoustic wave propagating through a piezoelectric material is accompanied by an electric-field wave. If the vibrations are properly oriented with respect to the crystal axes of a piezoelectric semiconductor, the local electric fields are axially directed and cause bunching of the charged carriers. If the drift velocity of these carriers is less than the velocity of sound, they tend to be dragged along by the acoustic wave. This electroacoustic effect results in a net potential appearing across the material and in attenuation of the acoustic wave. On the other hand, if the drift velocity exceeds the velocity of sound, energy is coupled from the carriers to the acoustic wave and amplification results. Related effects which are being investigated include ultrasonic amplification in semimetals6-&apos; and semi-conductor, and current saturation in piezoelectric semiconductors.&apos;4-17 There are various problems which hinder the immediate application of ultrasonic amplification in a practical device. First, there are the traditional problems encountered in the design of acoustic delay lines: attenuation in the electromechanical transducers, reflected waves (which can lead to self-oscillation in an amplifying device), mechanical tolerances necessary to maintain phase coherence, and so forth. Second, there is the problem of selecting the best material from among the various piezoelectric semiconductors as they become available in single-crystal form with a wide choice of characteristics. An underground excavation project usually is a highly organized complex of different but interrelated construction activities. It is the whole effort, including the necessary tools, which will be referred to as the System. Tunnel-driving and shaft-sinking operations are among the most systematic of construction efforts. Systems are not new in the performance of construction. It is the Systems Concept which seems only recently to have been discovered and made the subject of much study and discussion. HISTORICAL From the seventeenth century, when explosives were first utilized for rock excavation, until the successful application of the rotary-head continuous tunneler in this decade, the cyclical drill-blast-muck-support method has been standard tunnel-driving procedure throughout the world. Whatever improvements occurred were the result of development of better tools for performing the various operations of the cycle. The electric locomotive replaced the mule and permitted the use of larger muck cars. The steam drill, which ended the day of the double jack, was itself quickly made obsolete when compressed air replaced steam as the source of drilling energy. Power shovels were introduced to save the time and money involved in the hand-loading of excavated materials. A cubic yard of rock tunnel muck can be excavated today for just half the man-hours of labor required in 1948. Developments over 20 years which cumulatively have resulted in this economy include: drifter drills mounted on hydraulically controlled booms and positioners; tungsten-car- bide-tipped bits; long feed shells on the drifters, making it possible to drill the full depth of a round without changing steel; better designed,

IN his recent article, Stanley C. Herold described some of the principles involved in oil-field rejuvenation. The purpose of this paper is to present certain facts, based upon observations of systematic water flooding of oil sands in the Bradford and Allegany fields of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York, which, it is believed, will partially substantiate Mr. Herold&apos;s opinions. The writer gratefully acknowledges his obligation to the Forest Oil Corpn., the Kendall Refining Co., the Petroleum Reclamation Co., W. J. Healey, of Bradford, Pa., and the Producers Oil Corpn., of Olean, N. Y., for information included in this article; and he is especially indebted to Jerry B. Newby, of the Petroleum Reclamation Co., for helpful suggestions and criticism in the preparation of the paper. It is obvious that, in the calculation of mathematical formulas for the prediction of oil recovery, uniform conditions must be assumed; otherwise, the applicability of the results of such work will be, by necessity, restricted to the area or individual property for which they were designed. Geologic and physical conditions are so variable throughout the fields where water flooding is practiced that it is difficult to devise methods that can be universally applicable. However, it is believed that there are certain fundamental principles which, when applied with specific modifications designed to meet the conditions existing in local areas or individual properties, may yield considerably greater recoveries of oil.

UNTIL very recently, the commercial availability of the rare earths as metals has been very limited. Fabrication of mill products from these metals has not been studied in most cases. This note reports the results of the development of fabrication techniques for thulium. Thulium has a melting point of about 1550°C and a hexagonal close-packed crystal structure. It oxidizes in air to give a black oxide (TmzO,). The procedures for producing thin thulium foil were developed on one ingot weighing about 220 g and were subsequently applied in processing about a pound of metal to foil. Several alternates for the various fabrication steps were investigated and will be discussed. The metal fabricated was in the form of commercial chill-cast ingots 1 in. in diam and 2 in. long weighing approximately 220 g. Impurities in the ingots were reported by the vendor to be 4000 ppni tantalum, 2000 ppm calcium, 200 ppm nickel, 100 to 200 ppm iron, 100 ppm europium, and less than 100 ppm copper, lutetium, and ytterbium. In addition to these impurities, several salt-like inclusions as large as l/8 in. in diam were revealed along the center line of the one ingot sectioned. Preliminary tests indicated that small wafers cut from the as-cast ingot would not fabricate readily by rolling. Forging of copper-jacketed wafers was therefore attempted. At 1550"F forging was satisfactory but an apparent reaction of copper with thulium demanded investigation of lower temperatures. Therefore, the remainder of the test ingot was forged at 1450°F—with only minor cracking. All ingots forged were inserted into copper tubes of 1 in. 1D and 0.125-in. wall thickness. The jackets were sealed by flattening the ends of the tubes and welding under helium. Heating time at 1450°F was 30 min. Press forgings of 1/8 in. per pass were used, followed by 10 min reheats. When the ingots had been squared and reduced to 0.250 in. in thickness, the original copper jacket was stripped off and replaced by a new jacket in preparation for hot rolling. Hot rolling at 1450" F without edge cracking was readily accomplished after forging. Excellent results were obtained with 10 pct reductions of thickness followed by 5 to 10 min reheats. After reduction of thickness from 0.250 to 0.100 in. the copper jacket was removed. It was found, in fact, that hot rolling in air was possible. A tenacious black oxide similar to that seen on zirconium was formed during 3 min reheats at 1450°F. Reduction in air to 0.010 in. foil was possible taking 10 pct reductions per pass. The oxide coat formed during hot rolling in air could best be removed by sand blasting and pickling. Common pickling solutions containing polar solvents were found to attack the metal too rapidly and a concentrated nitric-hydrofluoric acid mixture attacked neither the oxide nor the metal. The most satisfactory pickling solution was 52 vol pct concentrated nitric acid-48 vol pct glacial acetic acid. After forging to 0.250 in., vacuum annealing and cold rolling was found to be another satisfactory alternate to hot rolling in copper jackets. After forging. a hardness of Rockwell B76 was found. Annealing in vacuum (2 X l0-5 mm of Hg) for 1 hr at 1200"F did not alter this value. Annealing at 1470"F for 1 hr brought the hardness down to R;]63. With cold rolling (5 pct per pass) the hardness returned to about R,1:76 after 20 pct reduction and edge cracking became noticeable. However, cold rolling to a total of 40 pct reduction in thickness (RI,,83) was possible before edge crack propagation became serious. Good surface finish was obtained, and the metal loss due to oxidation was minimized by cold rolling and vacuum annealing. Using this procedure the yield of 1.25 in. wide by 0.010 in. thick foil from a 1-in. diam ingot was about 40 pct.

AN apparatus and procedure for the determination by X-ray reflection of preferred orientation of crystals in rolled metal with the Geiger counter X-ray spectrometer was described by Schulz.&apos; This is an excellent procedure and we have used it continually for several years. In our use of the procedure, two modifications have been made and used during most of this period. One of these provides for automatic scanning and recording of the reflections, and the other makes possible the application of the procedure to coarse-grained specimens and permits measurement of almost all orientations without resort to the transmission technique. The automatic scanning and recording are accomplished by a motor drive of the inner ring of the Schulz apparatus (see R, in Fig. 2 of his paper and R2 in Fig. 1 of this note) in synchronism with the chart recorder of the North American Philips 90" X-ray spectrometer. A rate of 10" per min is used. A scan of 180" is obtained corresponding to poles on the stereographic projection whose locus is a great circle. The modification for coarse-grained material is accomplished by allowing a larger area of the specimen to contribute to the X-ray diffraction. In the Schulz apparatus the incident X-ray beam is confined by a slit system to rays in the plane of the spectrometer. Schulz demonstrated that this restriction of the X-ray beam permits a survey of the X-ray reflections without correction up to about 80" on either side of that specimen position in which the specimen is perpendicular to the plane of the spectrometer. This is the angle + of rotation of the inner ring R2. One of these slits is horizontal and extends across the X-ray source side of the specimen. In the modification this slit is removed, thus permitting greater divergence in the X-ray beam and the irradiation of a larger area of the specimen surface. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus with the motor drive and with the slit removed. Discontinuities in the recorded X-ray intensity plot due to the few participating crystals in coarse-grained metal are much lessened. The increased divergence does not cause reflections from other crystal planes to enter the Geiger counter slit. An important advantage of the original Schulz scheme is thus lost and a system for correction is required. To do this, a compact of atomized copper powder was prepared and tested by the original Schulz method for the absence of preferred orientation. The horizontal slit was then removed and a curve recorded showing the variation of intensity with angle +. In our arrangement the intensity was uniform within the range + equals ±30°. Beyond this the intensity fell off rapidly reaching zero at ±90°. The curve thus produced is then used to correct measurements made on preferred orientation specimens. In practice this is accomplished by constructing from this calibration curve a family of curves which, as a transparency, can be superimposed on the recorder chart to read corrected intensity directly. Not only does this method permit the handling of coarse-grained material but it also makes possible the plotting of intensities almost to the circumference of the stereographic pole figure projection. Thus, nearly the entire pole figure can be plotted without the necessity of using the transmission technique. Moreover, intensities are much greater, an advantage when surveying crystal planes of poor reflecting power.

Statistical methods are becoming increasingly important for interpreting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor, 1 written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.—Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of variables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves,2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such p1ants.
