Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge. "El laboratorio químico del departamento de Higiene industrial conjuntamente con la mina tiene la responsabilidad de velar por la salud integral del trabajador, como de la prevención de las enfermedades ocupacionales. Por ello, el objetivo del texto es señalar las principales actividades de este organismo, la estructura de sus funciones y los métodos utilizados, a fin de lograr un progreso posterior en la sociedad industrial y humana. Una de las principales labores del laboratorio químico son los exámenes de análisis, los cuales determinarán los agentes tóxicos causantes de distintas enfermedades. Su aplicación será dentro del ambiente de trabajo, a los trabajadores participantes y en muestras minerales del objeto de estudio. Asimismo, el laboratorio cuenta con un consultor químico, quien supervisa, capacita a profesionales químicos o extranjeros, y utiliza una serie de técnicas instrumentales de análisis como los método electroanalíticos (electrogravimetría, potenciometría, columbimetría, polarografía), los métodos ópticos (espectrografía, espectrofotometría), entre otros. Los métodos usualmente empleados son el polarográfico y espectrofotométrico ya que tiene resultados más precisos, muestran mayor reproducibilidad y facilitan la estandarización de los procedimientos. En conclusión, es necesaria la labor del laboratorio químico dentro de una industria minera, ya que apoya la investigación y la salud del trabajador a través de la introducción de nuevas técnicas instrumentales como los métodos descritos."

In 1994 the world's largest underwater tunnel was constructed to link Canada and the U.S.A. This new tunnel was large enough to accommodate double-decker railway cars. The construction of an unplanned Retrieval Shaft was required to allow removal and servicing of the Cutterhead of the Tunnel Boring Machine before it passed under the St. Clair River. This paper, which is a revision of that published in Canadian Tunnelling, has been modified here to emphasize construction considerations and describes the evolution of the design and construction of this "Rescue Shaft" under extreme schedule pressure, and changed ground conditions..

"The mineral potential of the Nanisivik area was discovered as far back as 1910 when a prospector of the Geological Survey of Canada, on an expedition under Captain J. G.Bernier, recorded a deposit of pyrite with minor sphalerite and galena. An outcrop of the present orebody was discovered by Texas Gulf Company in 1957. Subsequent drilling outlined the orebody consisting of 6,000,000 tonnes of ore containing 13 % Zinc and 1.5 % Lead. The orebody appears to have been formed by the filling of a limestone cavern with sulphides. The sulphide minerals consist of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. The limestone bedrock is mostly dolomite with some calcite and magnesite. A cutoff grade of about 6% Zinc has been calculated.In 1972 Mineral Resources International Limited took an option on the property. Upon completion of the feasibility study by Watts, Griffiths and McOuat, the then new independent project management group of Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. were engaged to develop the project through the financing, construction and operating phases. Strathcona Mineral Services still manage the project from their head office in Toronto and through the Mine Manager and Department Superintendents at the Mine site. The interest for the project is presently split five ways: Mineral Resources International Ltd. 53.5 %, Government of Canada 18 %, Metallgesellschaft A.G. of Germany 11.25 %, Billiton B. V. of Holland 11.25 % and Texas Gulf Co. 6 %."

El presente texto señala los exámenes médicos pre-ocupacionales en la industria minera. Esta evaluación es el primer nexo entre el médico y el trabajador que sirve para percibir la condición física y psíquica del futuro operario y y luego destinarlo a una labor acorde con las cualidades encontradas. Las leyes peruanas que ordenan los exámenes médicos pre-ocupacionales están principalmente contenidas en el Reglamento de Seguridad e Higiene para la Industria minera y metalúrgica, las cuales obligan que todo el personal técnico, empleados y obreros y personal que labore en subsuelo y superficie cumpla con dicha disposición reglamentaria. El examen médico se detallára en la ficha médica del trabajador y determinará la capacidad del trabajador. La ficha médica debe incluir un control radiográfico y se debe conservar un archivo radiográfico del personal, como la mejor manera de evaluar los cambios que pueden operarse con el transcurso del tiempo.

El yacimiento de Antamina es un depósito tipo skarn que produce concentrados de cobre, zinc, molibdeno, plata y plomo. El estudio se inicia con el analizador portátil de fluorescencia de rayos X (XRF) calibrado por el fabricante; luego se realiza pruebas con muestras del yacimiento en diferentes tiempos, lo cual permitió elegir un tiempo entre 20 y 45 segundos para Endoskarn y Exoskarn, con mejores resultados de Ti y Zr. La investigación permitió identificar dos elementos, Ti y Zr, cuya baja movilidad durante la alteración hidrotermal y formación de calcosilicatos les permite jugar el rol de discriminantes geoquímicos.

This report is Volume I of a three volume final report on the micro-seismic monitoring of a longwall coal mine. Volume I deals for the most part with the detailed aspects of the microseismic field study itself, however, brief references are made to other secondary studies described in Volumes II and III. During this field study a mobile microseismic monitoring facility and associated transducers were employed to detect and record microseismic activity above a longwall panel at Greenwich Colleries, Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. The fundamental objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the feasibility of detecting microseismic activity originating from longwall mining operations using an approximately planar, near-surface, geophone array installed above the longwall and (2) to attempt to locate the sources of the various microseismic events. This investigation has proven that, using the techniques developed it is possible to detect microseismic events at depths of more than 400 ft and at horizontal distances in excess of 800 ft from the source. The majority of the observed events were found to have frequencies on the order of 10 to 100 Hz, and particle velocities of 50 to 300 µips. When a suitable velocity model was utilized, most of the events located were computed to be within ±100 ft vertically of the coal seam and ±50 ft horizontally of the longwall face. The results of the overall research project suggest that additional research should be undertaken in a number of associated areas.

Existing foundations, adjacent structures and services, in tandem with asymmetric loading, presented particular challenges in the planning, execution and design of the project. The construction methods and temporary works, analysis by the Finite Element method and monitoring carried out are all described.

Refractories are unique ceramic materials, which are used in large quantities in steel making furnaces, metal smelting vessels, and glass melting tanks. They are required to possess high thermal shock properties and good slag corrosion resistance as well as creep resistance at high temperatures. Therefore, they are made from very refractory minerals such as lime, periclase, corundum, spinel, and zirconia. Slags are vitreous materials produced as a residue in steel refining processes. They cover a wide range of compositions and may contain pure oxides, silicates, and sulfides as well as fluoride phases depending on the melting and smelting processes. These minerals exhibit spectacular cathodoluminescence color under electron bombardment; therefore, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy is found to be a superior technique for the characterization of refractory corrosion by slags. Examples included in this study are (1) reaction of fluorine containing mold slags with ZrO2-C nozzle refractories promoting crystallization of the Cuspidine, Ca4Si2O7(F,OH)2, (2) corrosion of fusion cast refractories in TV panel glassmaking furnaces and formation of glass defects, and (3) reaction of spinel based castable refractories with copper smelting slags.

An overview of recent development of CSIRO?s Multi-Phase reaction models will be presented with examples comparing the calculated physico-chemical properties of metallurgical slags with the existing experimental data. The paper will also outline the development of a kinetically based model for molten bath reactors and its application to submerged combustion of coal in a slag bath as well as the reaction between the slag and injected coal particles. The plume model combines established models for the combustion of pulverized fuel with models for the growth and rise of bubbles from a lance or tuyere. This model predicts the extent of de-volatilization and combustion of the coal in the plume, the utilization of oxygen and the exchange rate of oxygen between the gas and the bath as well as the heat transfer rate between the gas bubbles and the bath. The slag reduction model brings together the recently measured rate data and fundamental understanding of the kinetics of CO-CO2reaction with iron oxide containing slags and predicts the changes resulting from injection of coal particles into molten slags. The top-space model covers reactions between gases and molten droplets in the post-combustion zone, where heat and mass transfer between phases results in higher utilization of the fuel values in the partly oxidized gases and transfer of heat to the molten bath. Since the ancient times, clays were used as decolorant material for various types of oils. These clays were called ?decolorant clay?. They have the property to decolor dye materials present in mineral oils, plants and animals. Biofuel is a fuel derived from biomass of live organisms. As biodiesel is produced from renewable sources, the generation of employment due to industrial scale production may cause a reduction in the dependence on foreign diesel importing, as well as the reduction of air pollution by the addition of biodiesel to diesel. This study aimed to develop a technological process to decolor post- consumption oil to be applied as biofuel. The results were characterized by techniques of XRD (X-ray diffraction), X-ray fluorescence and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared). It was observed that the post-consumption oils presented a higher decoloration result after treatment with the Brazilian clay.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process 1.2x0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm.

This study presents the results of synthesizing monolithic siliconoxynitride, Si2N2O, ceramic from a mixture composed of reclaimed silicon and natural desert sand by using the nitriding combustion synthesis method. Single-phase Si2N2O powder was prepared by the combustion of a mixture composed of silicon and pulverized sand in 3 MPa nitrogen gas. The combustion reaction completed in 2 min and the combustion temperature reached 1577°C.The as-synthesized Si2N2O powder is agglomerate of fine particles with sizes < 5 µm and has various morphologies; rod-like and irregular crystals, irregular kinking, hollow crystals and grown pseudo-hexagonal prismatic crystals. Porous Si2N2O compacts (24.5–47.1% porosities) were fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder at different calcia-alumina additives (5–20 wt%) by normal sintering at 1500°C for 1 hr in N2atmosphere.They showed superior oxidation-resistance at high temperatures up to 1500°C in an oxidizing atmosphere of Ar/O2/H2O(70/20/10 kPa).Near-full dense Si2N2O compacts were also successfully fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder with 5 wt% oxide additives by using the spark plasma sintering at 1600°C.DenseSi2N2O had good mechanical properties (18.7 GPa Vickers hardness, 3.3 MPa.m1/2fracture toughness and 363 MPa strength) and excellent chemical and oxidation resistance.

"Abstract Pile design for building structures in the United States is typically performed by: 1) investigating and assigning engineering parameters to the respective ground bearing materials, 2) calculating ultimate pile to ground (geotechnical) capacity which is then reduced by a Safety Factor deemed appropriate by a registered Design Professional thereby arriving at an allowable pile geotechnical pile capacity, and 3) determining the required pile structural section using allowable pile section material properties. It is advantageous to use a Working Stress Design Method (WSDM) approach as one system of loads (service loads) are used in both the geotechnical and structural evaluation. There are a variety of methods used to determine the ultimate and allowable geotechnical capacity, and Building Codes often require a registered Design Professional to determine the appropriate method(s) and capacities. The International Building Code is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Structural design usually follows Building Code requirements and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) procedures. As design of the overlying structure typically follows a Strength Design Method (SDM) approach using factored loads, in some cases piling is first designed for pile-to-soil interaction using service loads, followed by evaluating the pile geometry for factored loads. Construction is the finalization and implementation of the designed piling. As such, project-specific technical specifications are typically developed by a registered Design Professional such that a project Owner can bid, buy, and instruct a Contractor as to the desired piling work and acceptance criteria. There are several Industry groups, including DFI, PDCA, ADSC, and ACI that provide guidance documents which the registered Design Professional can refer to in developing the piling technical specifications. It is the author’s opinion that the registered Design Professional is best suited to observe and verify the piling installation; many Building Departments require verification and documentation by a registered Professional as a condition of final acceptance.INTRODUCTIONPile design for building structures consists of: investigation, design, specification, and verification. In major metropolitan areas within the United States, Building Codes typically identify minimum requirements for each of the above steps. The International Building Code (ICC, 2012) is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Recognizing the ground conditions as well as piling construction means and methods can vary on a site-by-site basis, latitude is given to the registered Design Professional and Contractor to optimize the piling system for the respective project conditions. Field testing and quality control / assurance measures are typically implemented to verify the design intent is attained for the production pile elements."

This paper summarizes current underhand paste backfill mining as applied to Goldcorp Inc?s Red Lake Mine, Newcrest Mining Ltd?s Kencana Mine and the Lanfranchi Nickel Mine as well as ongoing research at the University of British Columbia?s Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. The Red Lake Mine utilises a 6 m wide undercut with a 2 MPa unconfined strength paste in order to selectively mine its high grade, high-stress orebody. Kencana?s orebody is located in a poor rock mass environment. An 8 m wide, 2 MPa unconfined strength paste sill allows a safe working condition for its high grade orebody. The Lanfranchi Nickel Mine utilises a cable-supported, 2 MPa paste, with 12 m span sills, to optimize the mining of the squeezing rock mass. This paper details the rock mechanic hazards, ground support techniques, paste practices and unique conditions for each mine. Further, an update of ongoing research at the University of British Columbia, focussing on the optimization of safe mining in underhand cut-and-fill mining in high-stress/weak rock masses, is presented.

En minera Coimolache se ha asumido una real responsabilidad respecto al cumplimiento de compromisos sociales, que viene siendo una tarea compleja de organizar. La gran mayoría de compromisos provienen de alguno de nuestros Instrumentos de Gestión Ambiental, los cuales presentan bastante generalidad y poco detalle, lo cual los convierte ambiguos en interpretación y ejecución, lo cual influye en la fiscalización que recibimos por parte de las autoridades competentes y que termina siendo poco objetiva. En el presente ensayo, no se trata de contar una realidad 100% exitosa de minera Coimolache, sino de compartir los retos que se afrontan con el objetivo de lograr un cumplimiento esperado de compromisos.

Drilling activity in the South Texas area, which includes the South Corpus Christi and Laredo districts, showed a marked decline during 1941 from that of the preceding year. The rate of new discoveries, however, &apos;compared favorably with exploratory results of 1940 because of the many new productive sands opened in existing fields. South Texas completions for 1941 were about 12.3 per cent below the 1940 figure, compared with an increase of approximately 5.5 per cent in the total number of completions in the United States during 1941 over the 1940 total. During the year, 1452 wells were drilled in this area; of these, 1205 were drilled in or as extensions to the proven fields, and 247 were rank wildcats drilled in search of new producing pools. The comparable 1940 figures were: 1320 field or extension wells and 336 rank wildcats, a total of 1656 completions. This represents a decline in 1941 of approximately 8.7 per cent in proven-area wells, and of about 26.5 per cent in rank wildcats. It must be stressed that wells that were considered rank wildcats at the beginning of operations, but which opened production later classified as additions to existing fields, are not regarded as rank wildcats in this and previous annual reports on this same area. These wells are classified as semiwildcats (Table 2). There were 13 new oil or distillate fields and 4 new gas areas opened during the year, as listed in the next column. This listing represents a decline of 32 per cent from the 25 new areas found during the previous year, and to a great extent can be attributed to the 26.5 per cent decline in wildcatting. The rate of new discoveries based on the 247 wildcats was 14.5 to I, which compares somewhat unfavorably with the 13.4 to I ratio obtained in 1940 (Table 5). Dry wildcats totaled 230. The proof of the prolific character of the South Texas area as a source of petroleum reservoirs is to be found in the fact that of the 1205 field or extension (semiwildcat) wells completed during the past year 61 opened production from new sands or found crude in formerly distillate-producing sands. The 1940 total of 1320 such wells accounted for 50 horizons that provided either new production or crude in distillate sands, and in this respect the 1941 rate of discovery shows to greater advantage, the ratios for new sands being 19.7 to I for 1941 and 26.4 to I for 1940.
