O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar os parâmetros de lingotamento contínuo e os seus impactos na qualidade superficial do tarugo e principalmente relacionados às trincas superficiais. Alinhado com a literatura de solidificação do aço, a velocidade de lingotamento e a refrigeração secundária foram os parâmetros focados no trabalho devido a sua forte influencia na geração e propagação das trincas superficiais do tarugo. Os parâmetros de processo foram comparados com os utilizados nas outras usinas de aços especiais que são benchmarking em qualidade superficial e as boas práticas aplicadas no equipamento da Gerdau Pindamonhangaba. O resultado deste trabalho gerou uma redução de 40% no sucatamento por trincas superficiais em barras laminadas.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines study of U.S. roof and rib (roof- rib) accident statistics and related accident costs is to define current accident trends (1980-84) associated with fatal and nonfatal roof-rib fall accidents. Data were retrieved from a data base containing all recorded U.S. mining accidents, then sorted and normalized utilizing a computer software program. The statistics indicate that roof-rib accidents have significantly declined in the 5-yr study period. Moreover, they indicate that there have been increases and/or patterns of roof-rib accidents associated with specific mine characteristics, such as seam height, mine size, geographic location, and seasonal variations. Also, roof-rib injury characteristics produced pattern changes involving worker activity, lost workdays, types of injury, and severity of injury. A conservative estimate indicates that there has been a 30% adjusted increase in the cost of a roof-rib accident over the 5-yr study period.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the in situ vertical component of the rock stress in the rib of the haulage drift on the 6100-level of the Star mine, Burke, Idaho, using the flatjack and borehole deformation methods. The estimate of the vertical component of stress about 2 feet into the rib at a station along the haulage drift on the 6100-level of the Star mine by the flatjack method is approximately 5,875 psi, whereas the borehole deformation procedure at this station yielded a value of 5,500 psi for the same depth into the rib. The test zone is approximately 5,625 feet below the surface.No attempt was made to extrapolate stress estimates beyond the depth of the flatjack installation.

Gold has always been a crisis investment. For centuries gold has been considered globally the money of last resort. In time of war, inflation, financial uncertainty, political upheaval there has with few exceptions always been a flight to gold. The gold paradox simply is that even though we have gone through for the past handful of years all the kinds of. anxieties that would cause the gold price to rise, it has instead dropped drastically. Figure 1. illustrates the important factors that influenced the gold price significantly up or down before 1987. Obviously, since then, even though we have had wars, inflation, financial problems involving breaking banks and thrifts let alone collapsing financial institutions, the gold price has both in the long-term and the short-term trended downwards. Figure 2. depicts the gold price path since 1987. If the presence of time-honored and time-tested factors that should have driven the gold price up didn't do the job, then logic dictates that new factors to drive the gold price down and keep it depressed arose. And they did. But before addressing these depressants permit me to turn to the arcane art of gold price prediction and fore-casting.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen of the AIME. I was doubly pleased when Toby Yu asked me to present to you my thoughts on the past, the present, and the future of bulk transportation by barge. My first pleasure comes from sharing with you the subject that has been my career for many years. I love this industry in the same way Mark Twain loved our rivers. Somehow, I can find in all of the activities that make up this crazy barge business the same sort of excitement that he found in "steam boating." The second reason for my enthusiasm is that Toby carefully pointed out that the presentation had to be kept to a maximum of 15 minutes. I can promise you that I will hold to his maximum time limit.

Estruturas de aço são utilizadas em diversas aplicações na construção civil, com vantagens relativas a outros tipos de construções, tais como leveza e rapidez na execução da obra. Porém um dos maiores problemas neste tipo de sistema construtivo é a corrosão atmosférica a que estará sujeita o aço estrutural utilizado. Com o objetivo de se avaliar a resistência à corrosão atmosférica, neste trabalho, foram construídos painéis expositores, conforme a NBR 6209, para manter corpos de prova de aço estrutural comum e patinável, por um período inicial de setenta dias em dois locais distintos, categorizados com de agressividade ambiental I e III, respectivamente interior e litoral do estado de São Paulo. Superficialmente o processo de degradação foi nitidamente diferenciado, com o mesmo resultado sendo apontado pela alteração da massa das amostras, que se elevou durante a exposição ao ambiente de agressividade III, já que os produtos de corrosão formados não se desprenderam no curto período de tempo do teste. Mesmo considerado que a norma estipula um tempo mínimo de dois anos de duração para o ensaio, que ainda está em andamento, o presente estudo aponta a necessidade de adotar mecanismos de proteção contra a corrosão muito mais severos nas regiões litorâneas.

During the past decade, the miner-al industries have been faced with an increasing shortage of engineers. The point has now been reached where the shortage may be termed critical. This shortage may be attributed directly to declining enrollment in the mineral science programs offered by the universities on this continent. Although the reasons for declining enrollment are undoubtedly many, two major hypotheses may be postulated. The first is that high-school graduates are either unaware of the mineral industries and the opportunities in them or that they are aware of them but have somehow obtained a false image of their true nature. The second is that they are aware of the true nature of these industries and the opportunities they offer but find them exceedingly unattractive. The problem of dwindling enrollments has, in recent years, been subjected to a concerted attack by the industries and professions concerned. However, their efforts to date have been based essentially on the first hypothesis. Sufficient results are now available to suggest that either the methods of attack are inappropriate

In the present study, an innovative comminution technology of high-voltage pulse discharge was proposed for galena to weaken the mechanical property. The results of pre-treatment experiments indicated that the optimal operating conditions of spherical gap spacing 25 mm, pulse numbers 120, and loading voltage 25 kV were obtained, where the relative grindability of pretreated products was improved significantly, although with the prolonging of grinding time, the superiority of high-voltage electric pulses was gradually weakened. The galena ores were subjected to a high-voltage pulse discharge, and then the crack generating along the boundary between galena and gangue was observed under an optical microscope, and the surface burning which appeared in the ores. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicated that the pretreated products were in a state of melting and then condensation, accompanied by some pore formation. Pulsed discharge pre-treatment not only produced more micro-cracks and cracks in the sample but also extended the original crack. "Mining executives are becoming increasingly involved with decisions of the ""What would happen if ... "" variety. Potential changes in government policy, such as tax incentives, E.G.M.A. allowances, etc. affect the economic future of present and proposed mining ventures.This paper will discuss various measures of effectiveness normally used in assessing this future, such as discounted cash flow, etc., and will describe means of introducing uncertainty into the computations. As the recognition of risk and attitudes toward accepting it are very important in the life of a mine executive, there will be a brief discussion of utility theory and its application to risk analysis.Risk models are usually of a size to warrant the use of an electronic computer. Therefore, to demonstrate the simple interaction necessary between a financial analyst and such a model, data will be read into a remote computer from a time-sharing terminal in the meeting room. It will be shown that changes may be rapidly made and alternative policies investigated ""on line"" to a computer."

O presente trabalho teve como principal objetivo avaliar, em escalas laboratorial e industrial, a viabilidade técnica e financeira da aplicação da escória de Aciaria LD (EAC), em combinação com a escória granulada de Alto-Forno (EAF), à produção de Cimento Portland CP III. O projeto de pesquisa em questão foi desenvolvido pela CSN, através de Convênio de Cooperação Técnica e Econômica com a Escola de Engenharia de Lorena, EEL, da Universidade de São Paulo, USP, e compreendeu as seguintes etapas: i) caracterização físico-química e mineralógica da escória de Aciaria LD da CSN; ii) desenvolvimento do processo adicional de beneficiamento da EAC para aplicação na produção de cimento; iii) testes laboratoriais visando a avaliar a viabilidade técnica; iv) testes industriais com a finalidade de validar os testes laboratoriais e selecionar a formulação de melhor desempenho; v) estudo de viabilidade financeira; e vi) implantação do projeto. A aplicação da escória de Aciaria LD da CSN na produção de Cimento Portland CP III, em combinação com a escória de Alto-Forno e clínquer, é viável técnica e financeiramente. Isso traz reflexos positivos para o aumento da competitividade do negócio Cimento, aumenta a recuperação de metálicos para reciclagem nos processos siderúrgicos da UPV (negócio Siderurgia) e reduz passivos ambientais.

The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for decision making when considering the use of three heading gate roads in Australian underground coal mines.There are currently 30 underground longwall mines in Australia with all but two employing two heading gate road longwall layouts. The volumetric capacity of these two heading ventilation circuits is evidently viable in typical block lengths and in low to moderate gas regimes. However, in gassier regimes, potential longwall production rates of 10 Mt/a, and or where block lengths are being extended to well beyond historical norms, a conventional two heading U circuit may not be adequate. Other than seam gas emission, block length and production dependent heat loads together sealed area management requirements also have to be considered.The two mines currently employing three heading gate roads have the opportunity to revert to two headings at any time but, based on operational experience to date, have not done so due to the consequential reduction in gas management capacity and lower production rates associated with gas delays and limitations on tailgate access.Although there are a number of alternative two heading longwall circuits available and employed worldwide, the custom and practice of promoting inert goaf atmospheres in most Australian coal mines to mitigate the risk of catastrophic gas explosions and spontaneous combustion often prevents the use of gas loaded bleeder systems. In this respect, Australian underground coal mines may be considered the safest in the world.The current situation is that three heading gate roads have been proven successful in Australian conditions, albeit at additional cost, where two heading ventilation circuits cannot manage net seam gas emission to the ventilation system at the production rates required. The Royal Canadian Mint has implemented significant process additions since 2005. Installation of a whole new highly automated silver refining circuit has allowed recovery of physical silver from gold and silver dorés . To complement this change, a small Top Blown Rotary Converter has been in operation. On the gold refining side, a new hydrometallurgical process to recover precious metals from Miller Chlorination slag has been developed. Finally, new systems have been put in place to improve treatment of waste water, wet and dry fume and dust.

COAL'S importance in the metallurgy of zinc may be gauged by the fact that approximately a million and a half tons is so employed annually in the United States. This brief paper will show in what way the various steps in the treatment of zinc ores utilize this fuel, either in its primary form or as coke or gas, and to what extent. The first step in zinc metallurgy that requires the use of fuel is roasting the sulphide ore, which is the type of ore in which zinc commonly occurs. Since the roasting is nearly or completely autogenous, however, this use of fuel is too minor to warrant further attention. Concentration of zinc ores is usually carried out by conventional milling methods, but a pyrometallurgical method, the Waelz process, is used to concentrate certain low-grade ores, and to recover the zinc content of certain residues in concentrate form. In my paper on " End-Lines and Side-Lines in the Mining Law," read at the New York meeting of February, 1889 (Trans., xvii., 787), I discussed certain points involving the rights of a locator, B, who had located and surveyed a piece of ground, X + Y, of which only Y was properly subject to location, X being already held by another claimant, and had applied for and received a patent, granting X + Y, " excepting and excluding X." The paper concluded with the following questions : " Is there any difference in effect between the grant to him of Y simply and the grant of X + Y, ' excepting and excluding X' ? Why should any mining locator stake out his boundaries upon another location, and thus appear to assert a claim which he immediately withdraws? What is the legal force of such boundaries, established upon the land of another?" After calling attention to the fact that the entrance upon another's land for such a purpose is a trespass, and the principle that no trespasser can create by his trespass any right which he would not have without it, I reserved to another occasion a review of the history of the absurd practice of imaginary boundaries for mining claims, and a discussion of their legal effect. This practice is founded, of course, in the regulations and decisions of the United States General Land Office. There is nothing in the Revised Statutes which hints at it. On the contrary, the terms of Section 2322, giving to a locator " the exclusive right of possession and enjoyment" of the surface of his claim, seems clearly to forbid the use of that surface for the boundary-stakes of another locator. But the Act of 1866, though it provided for the issue of patents upon payment to the Government of so much per acre, and really by implication (as I have always believed) involved the absolute grant of the surface, was not so construed by the courts generally, or by the Land Office. THE CRACKING AND POPPING of rock, often heard by men working underground, for years has been interpreted as a warning of danger and unstable ground. However, not until 1939 was it discovered that rock under stress generates subaudible and sometimes audible seismic disturbances (referred to as "micro-seismims" 4), which can be detected with the use of a suitable seismic apparatus. Since that date laboratory and field investigations have been in progress to ascertain to what extent this phenomenon can be utilized to detect, localize, and determine the magnitude of areas of instability in and around mine openings and to predict if and when failure will occur. These investigations have included a determination of the types of problems to which the method is applicable and the effect of rock type, geological defects, such as joints, fractures, faults, and other uncontrollable factors, on the reliability of results. Six reports have been prepared covering the investigations conducted between 1940 and 1952 (4-9). 5 These reports describe some of the characteristics of micro-seismims, as determined from both laboratory and field tests; the equipment used to pick up and record micro-seismims; the general test procedure and method of analyzing results; and applications of the method to specific mining problems.

The performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) depends on the efficiency of the cutters, which can be influenced by geological conditions and rock mass properties. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model, based on a discrete element method, was used to evaluate the effects of joint orientation and its spacing on the fragmentation process by a TBM cutter. Several models were constructed to study the effects of variable orientation; these models incorporated different spacing, variable spacing, different orientations on the fragmentation process, and different sections of the block model. Three parameters, consisting of induced tensile stress, induced shear stress and maximum displacement, were calculated. The stress in each section that forms chips was considered as critical stress; critical joint spacing and orientation in each section were determined. Results show that the critical orientation was in the range of 45 to 60º, where there was a possibility to achieve the maximum penetration rate. The critical joint spacing was 200 mm and, by increasing joint spacing, the value of critical stress decreased significantly. Furthermore, joint orientation could influence more than joint spacing in the rock cutting process.

In recent years, west-central Arizona and adjacent California have become the focus of geologic and exploration attention because of its excellent exposure of detachment-fault terrane. Detachment faults, normal faults with nearly horizontal fault planes, are the result of regional extension. Rocks on the lower plate consist of mylonitized intrusive, metasedimentary and crystalline rocks highly altered to chlorite; upper plate rocks comprise sedimentary, volcanic, metasedimentary, and metavolcanic rocks. The movement of the detachment fault causes the rocks on the upper plate to be severely fractured and brecciated thus making them Ideal conduits for mineralizing fluids. Mineralization favored the more reactive sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the upper plate. Three gold deposits, located in upper plate rocks, are currently being mined along the Colorado River corridor: the Picacho Mine near Yuma, Arizona, 70 mi south of the study area; the American Girl Mine In southeastern California, 60 mi southwest; and the Copperstone Mine near the southern end of this study area. Samples from the above three mines were used to create a geochemical model of detachment-related gold deposits. Antimony, arsenic, barium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and zinc all occur In the mine samples in concentrations at least three times greater than found elsewhere in similar rock types. Samples taken by the Bureau from the wilderness study areas contain similar anomalous concentrations of the same elements as well as elevated concentrations of several other elements Including: lead, fluorine, cerium, uranium, and samarium.

The Goonumbla district of central-west New South Wales, Australia, hosts four significant porphyry Cu-Au deposits that contain a combined probable ore reserve of 71.7 million tonnes at 1.2 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Mineralisation in the Goonumbla deposits is associated with narrow, pipe-like intrusions of quartz monzonite porphyry, in which several intrusive phases have been recognised. Five textural characteristics have been used to distinguish the various intrusive phases recognised in the Goonumbla porphyry deposits: (1) phenocryst abundance; (2) nature of the groundmass; (3 and 4) proportion and mineralogy of the mafic and non-mafic phenocrysts; and (5) the presence or absence of anhedral quartz grains in the groundmass. In addition, each intrusive phase is classified according to its estimated original quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase contents. Features common to all of the intrusions are that they contain two types of plagioclase and two or three types of K-feldspar phenocrysts in variable proportions. Most of the intrusions also contain apatite micro-phenocrysts. The groundmass textures range from aphanitic through granular to euhedral K-feldspar in a quartz matrix. With only one exception, all of the intrusive phases recognised are either quartz monzonite porphyry or mafic (>5 per cent mafic minerals) quartz monzonite porphyry. The exception is a biotite - phyric monzodiorite, which occurs in the basal portions of one of the deposits. Textural variants of intrusive phases at Goonumbla have been investigated to establish whether specific combinations of characteristics indicate mineralised intrusions, while others suggest barren ones. Some correlations between intrusion types and Cu and Au grade have been recognised. Six examples of the peritectoid transformation were selected from the literature and studied by the method of isothermal transformation. The kinetics and mechanisms of five of the examples are presented as TTT diagrams and photomicrographs. The exist-enc- of a peritectoid in the sixth case is doubtful. ALTHOUGH the peritectoid transformation per se has been known for many years, no precise published data exist concerning the kinetics or mechanisms involved in transformations of this type, except for the brief treatment by Rhines, et al. 1,10 Bearing in mind the fact that investigations of recent years are uncovering more and more peritectoids and suspected peritectoids, a thorough study of the well-established peritectoids appeared to be in order. It was for this reason that a study of the kinetics and morphological mechanisms of six binary peritectoids was undertaken. The six peritectoids selected from the literature for study were those reported at 7.02 wt pct Al-Ag, 26.0 wt pct Sb-Cu, 30.5 wt pct Sb-Cu, 32.3 wt pct Sn-Cu, 8.35 wt pct Si-Cu, and 21.2 wt pct Al-Cu. These selections were based on availability and purity of components, ease of preparation and heat-treatment, and estimated reliability of the available equilibrium diagrams in the regions of interest. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were induction melted in electrode-grade graphite and chill-cast in cast-iron split molds. In all cases, the alloys were so brittle that they could easily be broken into samples weighing 1 or 2 g. Chemical analyses showed that the alloys used were close to the respective peritectoid compositions reported in the literature and that the impurity levels were low in all cases. Metallographic examination showed uniform distributions of phases in all samples, indicating uniformity of composition in the samples studied. Isothermal transformation studies were carried out in fused-salt media, using the familiar inter-rupted-quench method. Uniformity of temperature in the salt baths was maintained by continuous stirring with a stainless-steel agitator. On the basis of actual observations of the temperature fluctuations, the estimated temperature control was + 10C for the Ag-Al and Cu-Sb alloys and ±30C for the Cu-Sn, Cu-Si, and Cu-Al alloys. The accuracy of all temperature measurements was estimated to be ±1°C. It was found necessary to mount metallographic specimens of the Ag-Al alloy in cold-curing methyl methacrylate, since the temperatures encountered in mounting in bakelite or lucite caused an appreciable degree of transformation to the ß phase. For the other alloys, wood-flour-filled bakelite mounts were used to avoid extraneous X-ray diffraction lines during the later examination of the metallographic specimens on a Norelco Geiger-counter d if f r ac tomete r. In the X-ray diffraction procedure, agreement between the published diffraction patterns and those obtained in this study was good. This was particularly important for phase identification, since the literature contained little in the way of micrograph description in some cases. Etching of the silver-aluminum alloy for metallographic examination was done by swabbing with either of the following reagents: 1) 10 g CrO3, 1 g (NH4), SO2, 0.5 g NH4NO3, 100 ml H2O, or 2) 10 ml NH4OH, 1 ml 20 pct KOH, 4 ml 3 pct H2O2, 5 ml H2O. The other alloys were etched with the usual bichromate etchant: 2 g K2Cr2O7, 1.5 g NaC1, 8 ml conc. H2SO4, 100 ml H20 (swabbed vigorously). EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) The Ag-Al peritectoid at 7.02 wt pct Al— The phase equilibrium involved in this peritectoid is shown in Fig. I.2 The phase boundaries in the vicinity of the peritectoid were most comprehensively established by Hume-Rothery, et al,3 who placed the equilibrium temperature at 448 °C and the equilibrium compositions of the a ß' and y phases at 6.11, 7.02, and 7.24 wt pct Al, respective The alloy used in this study analyzed4 6.95 wt pct A making it slightly hypoperitectoid according to the accepted equilibrium diagram. This study conducts a comparative analysis of construction efficiency. In the first part we compared electronic and non-electric initiation systems, focusing on tunnel contour holes. Field blasting operations were executed across a variety of delays to identify the optimal delay time. This delay for the in-situ rock mass was determined through regression analysis of blasting vibration in contour holes and for overbreak/underbreak. The blasting results with the electronic initiation system using the obtained optimal delay, applied to contour holes, were compared with the results of the non-electric initiation system. The overbreak and underbreak decreased by an average of 2.7 cm and 5.8 cm respectively, by using the electronic initiation system. Moreover, the vibration reduction rate in contour holes region was reduced by 11.9% based on the blasting vibration estimation equation proposed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT). Underground construction projects have become increasing popular as cities grow in both size and density. This growth severely limits the amount of useable space for new project on the surface, resulting in the decision to build them underground. This new policy however brings into focus the challenge of managing and reducing blasting related vibration due to the proximity of these projects to sensitive structures, utilities and foundations often present in urban environments. For this purpose, we have been required to manage the vibration by reducing the quantity of explosives used per round. Inspired by surface blasting techniques, we applied a decking mode to address and work around this challenge. We present in this paper the first attempt to blast a tunnel face using a decking method and reduce the charging per hole from 6 kg to 3 kg per hole and keep the same advance rate for this tunnel. The results are presented in the third part of this paper. In the second part we present the results of the decking mode in shaft. The use of the electronic initiation system in tunnel construction provides the users an effective tool to improve the overbreak/underbreak and keep the vibration at a low level with a large gain on the overall project schedule and budget. This what we want to demonstrate in this paper.
