Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

"The Mining Laboratories of CANMET are the principal federal government vehicle for the delivery of mining research in Canada. With research being performed at five locations, which are mostly mining communities, the laboratories are in close proximity to the industry which they serve.The Mining Laboratories have three principal roles: (1) to support government in its development of policy; (2) to aid industry in the enhancement of productivity; and (3) to improve the health and safety of Canadians,both in the workplace in mines and around abandoned mine sites.From 1994 to 1996, CANMET’s mining research was re-focused into four programs. These are: (1) Underground Mine Environments; (2) Mine Mechanization and Automation; (3) Ground Control, and; (4) Coal Mining Health and Safety.In this paper, the authors outline the work of the Mining Laboratories and also identify the areas considered to be primary targets for future mining health and safety research in Canada."

The Department of the Interior has recently investigated the atmospheric conditions in tunnels of the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah and Wyoming , by observations made from the cabs of freight locomotives . This work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of , and in cooperation with , the Union Pacific Railroad Co .. and was brought about by several accidents to members of engine crews while passing through tunnels , from pollution of the tunnel air by exhaust gases from freight locomotives . The object was to determine the cause of gassing accidents , by examining into composition of the air in locomotive cabs while passing through railroad turmels ; to learn the effect of these conditions on the engine crew; and to provide a means of protection for the men so exposed . Gas samples and temperature readings taken in the cabs of locomotives were used in studying the atmospheric conditions to which the locomotive crews were exposed . The symptoms and the physiologica effects produced in men exposed to the atmospheres encountered were studied . The pulse rates and body temperatures were taken , and the determinations of the carbon monoxide content of the blood were made . Various methods for the prevention of gassing and for the protection of men therefrom were considered and tested , among which were the use of mechanical devices for deflecting the smoke away from the engine cab, and the use of various types of gas masks and breathing apparatus . While this investigation is a part of the safety work of the Bureau of Mines in connection with hazards from atmospheres containing carbon monoxide ( CO ) , the results are of particular value to railroads operating steam locomotives through tunnels , and are also valuable to other industries where atmospheres having poisonous gases or of a high temperature and humidity may be present . After World War II Canada?s fledgling iron ore mining industry developed along the ill-defined Quebec / Labrador border near what became the town of Knob Lake and later renamed Schefferville. For about twenty-five years from 1954 to 1982 Schefferville was the epicenter of Canadian iron ore mining and the foundation of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. In about 1982 it all stopped, shut down, the miners moved away leaving behind a mining camp and a ghost town that have sat idle and almost deserted for the past twenty five years. The story looks set to change with new plans to re-establish the former mining operations in the historic mining camp. This paper outlines the proposal to reactivate the direct shipping iron ore operations in the Schefferville mining camp, and specifically the properties in Labrador owned or optioned by Labrador Iron Mines Limited (?LIM?), a wholly owned subsidiary of London Stock Exchange listed Anglesey Mining plc. The Schefferville mining camp is located about 1,000 km northeast of Montreal. There are no roads connecting the area to southern Labrador or to Quebec. Access to the area is by rail from Sept Iles to Schefferville, or by air from Montreal and Sept Iles.

COM Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, has constructed a 1.6 million hectoliter-per-year COM plant in Jacksonville, Florida. COM will be distributed to customers in the region as a substitute for fuel oil presently burned in boilers and kilns. As the market for COM grows, COM Energy, Inc. expects to build additional units both in this country and overseas. This paper addresses the overall status and technical aspects of the project, focusing on the facilities for COM production and utilization.

Behaviour of minor elements in the dust collecting system connected with fluidized bed roaster for zinc concentrate was investigated by use of the bench scale experimental appara- tus. The dust collecting system was consisting of two dust chambers, hot electrostatic precip- itator, washing tower, mist electrostatic pre- cipitator, drying tower, absorption towers and potassium permanganate solution towers. Some volatile elements such as lead, cadmium and arsenic tend to concentrate in the fine calcine obtained in hot electrostatic precipitator especially in the case of the roasting with insufficient air supply. Special attention was paid to behaviour of mercury. In the roasting tests for plain zinc concentrate, it was considered that most mercury volatilizes at first as elemental vapour in the roaster, but with decrease in temperature of gas around a half of mercury forms compound, and both elemen- tal and compound forms of mercury were found in the gas stream. Elemental mercury is of course difficult to be trapped in the dust collecting system. To promote the compound formations, some additives for concentrate, such as selenium and halogens were effective, especially selenium of a few times equivalent to form HgSe repre- sented complete conversion of mercury from elemental to compound. To clarify the behaviour and removal mech- anism of mercury, various small scale laboratory tests were also carried out. It was confirmed that mercury sulfate formation is possible if temperature and flow rate are adjusted adequate- ly for gas stream consisting of 02-SO2-N2. To trap elemental mercury, various substances were tested, and excellent results were obtained with selenium. Satisfactory results were obtained with a selenium disc heated at 100 to 200¦C in a mercury containing gas stream. Also, applica- bility of scrubbing method with SeO2 solution was investigated, and the solution containing a few hundred ppm SeO2, 0.01 per cent additive and 6 per cent H2SO4 proved to be satisfactory.

This paper discusses the temporary support design methodology for the largest road caverns ever built in Australia—the Lutwyche Caverns—part of the Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia. The Lutwyche Caverns with a maximum excavated span of 27 m form a key component of this major road project, allowing on and off ramps merging with the underground highway. In addition to the two large span caverns, a 15 m soft ground tunnel with 5 m cover above the caverns and two 24 m deep burial chambers for the 12.4 m tunnel boring machines (TBMs) had to be built in record time at Lutwyche.The temporary support design methodology involved the use of a range of analytical approaches, including empirical methods to provide a starting point for design development, key block models to determine the potential influence of discontinuities on excavation stability and 2/3D continuum and discontinuum models to determine the potential influence of adjacent excavations and the proposed construction staging on the design. In addition, probabilistic analysis of potential kinematic instability using a discrete fracture network (DFN) approach was also undertaken to establish the critical block loads for the temporary lining, while the continuum and discontinuum models were used to design the support for the 1.5 m diameter rock pillar at the north end of the northbound cavern.The numerical modelling was undertaken in close conjunction with the contractor to develop the optimal construction sequence, considering the available construction equipment on-site and the overall project program requirements. The selection of the production level elevation is one of the most critical strategic decisions faced by large-scale block or panel caving projects. This elevation largely affects project timelines, capital expenditures, resource recovery, and may even constrain the mine’s maximum production capacity. Over the years, many computational tools have been developed to assist in this decision, most of them based on the same principle of maximizing the project value given its production level elevation. However, for large and inclined deposits, or those extending significantly in the vertical dimension and where extraction cannot be achieved from a single level, traditional selection techniques involving multiple production horizons often lead to suboptimal results. This paper proposes a methodology ensuring that the selection of production level elevations in a multiple horizons (“lifts”) case is globally optimized. Input parameters include economic and cost variables, maximum extractable column height, and deepening costs. The methodology is demonstrated through a real case study to illustrate its potential impact on project value.

"THE LOCATION of Canada's present aluminum industry is determined by availability of hydroelectric power, and ready access to ocean transport facilities. The chief raw material for the production of the metal is imported by ship over several thousand miles of water. In times of freedom of shipping and uncontested movement this provides the industry with its cheapest method of operation. However, during the early part of the last decade the general conditions of ocean and rail transportation were such that interest in the treatment of materials other than bauxite was greatly stimulated. This was the case not only in Canada, of course, but in most other countries.Canada has no deposits of bauxite and much research was carried out on other aluminous materials, chiefly silicates, in an effort to develop more or less economic and feasible methods of treatment. In the United States, this research was considerably more extensive. Some projects were early shown to be of little or no value, whereas others, including the widely publicized lime-sinter and soda-lime-sinter methods, became important. In North America, however, apart from the application of the sinter method to the hitherto waste-product (red mud) of the normal Bayer plant operation, none of these processes contributed appreciably to the production of aluminum during the war. In certain European countries, on the other hand, largely because of their situation with regard to bauxite deposits, they had a more general application, and Germany, for example, produced alumina from clay, ashes, and slag by at least four methods."

Although surfactants have proven to increase metal extraction by improving solution flow in porous media, these reagents have not been widely adopted in heap leaching operations because of potential incompatibilities with downstream processes that are subject to surface properties. The BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, was previously found to have no significant effect on post-leach operations. This study evaluated its performance in ores of different particle size distributions and the impact on acid consumption and metal recovery. Column leach studies, carried out on a copper oxide ore and mixed oxide–sulfide ore, showed that the effect of LixTRA 118 was more pronounced in ores with wider particle size distributions than in those with more uniformly sized particles. Solution percolation rates increased by up to 18% in the presence of leaching aid, and increased copper recovery and acid consumption. Improved wetting facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at macroand micropore level. There was no significant effect on iron recovery

"IntroductionThe efficiency of ore reduction in the blast furnace and fuel requirements depend upon the degree of uniformity with which reducing gases can be distributed through the stock column and upon the permeability of individual pieces of ore and sinter. If the ore is fine, the major problem in reduction is to get the ascending gas stream to the surface of the ore-Hard, dense ores of low permeability, mined in coarse sizes, tend to improve the permeability of the bed, but unless they are crushed to the proper size they reach the hearth unreduced.Surveys by the Bureau of Mines have shown conclusively that the gas distribution in the upper three fourths of the furnace is far from ideal. Furnace lines, top design, and methods of charging are important, but more thorough size preparation of the ore is necessary to eliminate size segregation at the stock line, which inevitably leads to non-uniformities in gas distribution.Because of the quantity of sinter now produced close study of the characteristics which determine its behavior in smelting is warranted. As the use of concentrates increases agglomeration will become more of a necessity. Improvements in the physical character of the ore burden are particularly important to plants using coke of poor physical quality. In addition to aiding reduction, improved physical properties of the ore burden will permit the use of higher blast heats, which is equally important.Reduction Tests on Fine Sizes of SinterPrevious reduction tests on minus 0.742— plus 0.525--inch pieces of commercial sinters revealed large differences in porosity and reducibility. The results have been published in a former report. 3 Although the physical properties of the sinter, particularly porosity, were found to be of major importance in determining the rate of deoxidization, it appeared that certain chemical properties of the sinter appreciably retarded the reduction of sinters high in silica. This was attributed to the presence of fayalite, which has been identified by Schwartz and by Luyken and Kraeber4 as an important constituent of sinter. Although furnace operators and metallurgists have assumed that iron silicate is more difficult to reduce than hematite or magnetite, definite data on the reduction characteristics of this material were not available. Tests were undertaken, therefore, to develop a method for de-termining the amount of iron silicate present in sinters so that its effect upon reduction could be observed."

THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.' The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation1' and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other adsorbent earths.

The recovery of manganese from lower-grade resources has been studied for a number of years. Of key importance in prior work was the discovery that higher-valent manganese can be readily leached with sulfurous acid. This eliminates the need for high-temperature reduction roasting that is conventionally used in processing high-grade material. High-temperature roasting is energy intensive, emits a large amount of carbon dioxide and would not be economical for processing lower grade material. While the prior work provides important information for extracting manganese from lower-grade resources, the production of unwanted byproducts and high water and energy usage has limited its commercial use. This paper describes the results from laboratory work that demonstrate solutions to problems that to this point have precluded commercial development. Preliminary mass and energy balances show that a significant opportunity exists in producing manganese with this hydrometallurgical scheme in a low-cost, environmentally friendly manner. The emphasis of the work is on low water use, low overall energy use and economic destruction of unwanted byproducts.

The various ion exchange reactions occurring during the restoration of formations contaminated with ammonia during in situ uranium leaching are reviewed. Data are presented on the restoration of a previously leached laboratory packed column using line saturated brine. Although this restoration fluid selectively and effectively removed the ammonia, 24.5 pore volumes are required to reduce the ammonia concentration from 500 to 3 ppm. The presence of NaCl in the restoration fluid is beneficial in + improving the selectivity of the system for NH removal and reducing ca++ ion consumption.

Sulfur is present in many ores and other raw materials that are used in the production of metals and alloys of industrial importance. Its presence, especially in ferrous-metal products, generally is undesirable because of its detrimental effect during processing and upon various physical properties of the finished metal. Therefore, various methods are resorted to for elimination of the element to some specified maximum final content. Such removal or elimination of sulfur is designated as desulfurization.

"The Level Crossing Removal Project – Package 1 is part of the Victorian Governments commitment to remove 50 of the most dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne. This involved removing three crossings on the Frankston Line in the south east suburbs of Melbourne. The works involved replacing approximately 2.5km of at grade track with three rail cuttings up to 8 m deep at each of the bridges that replace the level crossings. The cuttings are retained by piled retaining walls and during the main construction occupation approximately 250,000 cubic metres of soil was removed. The project has presented significant geotechnical challenges due to the location in residential suburbs and tight rail corridor and rail occupation timeframe. These challenges included temporary and permanent wall stability, foundations, earthworks and dewatering. The primary earthworks challenge for the project was moving the 250,000 cubic metres of soil in a 10 day window, however, from a geotechnical viewpoint, obtaining a stable subgrade on which to operate the necessary construction plant in a short time frame with constrained site access and time to import materials was the key. Whilst closely watching the performance of the dewatering system, a range of contingency plans were developed to cope with any difficulties."

Packing in a flotation column is one way to increase separation efficiency and effective descending flotation-column height. In this paper, the difference between filling packing and sieve packing is described, and the flaws of filling packing in flotation columns in industrial application are pointed out. A change of flotation process and its effect on flotation results are reported. Based on sieve-plate filling, a high-efficiency mixed packing mode consisting of screen-plate packing and honeycomb-tube packing has been proposed, with the packing mode optimized in the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column in the separation zone. In the mixed packing mode, the honeycomb tubes are used to reduce the vortex effect at the base of the column and weaken the radial dispersion of jetting bubbles, and the sieve plates are used to comminute bubbles in the separation zone, to lengthen the bubble migration path, and to stabilize the foam layer. The superiority of honeycomb-tube packing is analyzed using bubble-particle collision theory, and the dynamic equations of collision probability are derived. The role of mixed packing in guaranteeing mineral recovery is analyzed by the axial dispersion method, and a dimensionless axial dispersion model is derived. When a high-turbulence flow is maintained, a static separation environment is formed in which secondary mineral processing is rendered more effective. In this way, a nonlinear separation environment is formed in the flotation column. Finally, mixed packing was applied in an industrial test. A large vortex developed at the base of the column. It was observed that the bubbles in the radial flow were homogeneously dispersed, the residence time of the pulp was prolonged, and the froth layer became thick and stable. Based on the test data, it was found that the sieve packing has the potential to yield a product of approximately 25.83% copper concentration with 91.78% recovery from a feed concentration of approximately 0.727%. If mixed packing were used, the product concentration could be further increased to 27.60% from a feed of approximately 0.739% concentration with 93.38% recovery.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia's underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for more than 20 years. Mortality from coal workers' pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in X-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among U.S. coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above noted differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not illuminate the issue. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. If quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of pneumoconiosis in the United States, more effective dust control measures, as well as an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, should be implemented to reduce this potentially disabling condition.

THE Flin Flon concentrating and metallurgical plants (Figure 1) of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, lie adjacent to the town of Flin Flon, on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, 400 miles northwest of Winnipeg. Since the start of milling operations in 1930, over 50 million tons of ore from the Flin Flon mine have been treated in the concentrator. During the past few years, newly discovered orebodies have been brought into production and their ores processed at the company's main metallurgical plants. All these properties are within a 75-mile radius of Flin Flon and have aided substantially in augmenting plant metal production as well as retarding depletion of ore reserves in the Flin Flon mine. •Current satellite producers are the Schist Lake, Coronation, and Chisel Lake mines. The Schist Lake mine, located 3 ½ miles southeast of the main plant, is a copper-zinc producer. It was brought into production in 1954. The
