A strategy for prioritizing mining health and safety research by evaluating the potential for risk reduction through interventions is proposed. Mining has one of the highest incidence rates of injury and disease found in major industries. The main premise of this paper is that often the best opportunities to reduce these rates are not revealed by retrospective analysis of injury and illness data. Instead, a proactive approach is needed that accounts for risks to specific hazards that can be abated by engineering or behavioral interventions. The process proposed here begins with development of prospective interventions. The degree of reduction in risk to be expected from an intervention then is determined from statistics on the mining worker population, the expected degree of success of the intervention, and the expected change in the severity of injuries resulting from the intervention. Three disparate mining health and safety concerns are presented to demonstrate common problems in assessing risks of injury and illness and describe additional data needs. Information on events preceding injuries and illnesses and more detailed demographic data on the mining work force are needed to analyze injury and illness data more precisely. Detailed information on exposure to specific hazards is necessary to evaluate the potential for an intervention to reduce risk of injury or illness.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

Diagrams of pc-pH for the complex ions concentration and pH value and -g- for activity coefficient and ionic strength ln±MnSOI4had been drew based on the thermodynamic principle of coordination chemistry and combined with Pitzer theory at 298.15K. The diagram of -g- indicated that -gincreased sharply from 0.0000 up to 1.2147 when I changed from 0.00 ln±MnSOIln4±MnSO4to 0.09; The increase of -gbecame slowly when I was more than 1.00 and less than 1.69; kept still when I ln±MnSOln4-g±MnSO4was more than 2.25 and less than 4.00. Diagrams of pc-pH illustrated that the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) increased with the increase of I, the pc increased from 6.5 to 5.5 when I increased from 0.00 to 4.00; The pH of the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) increased with the increase of I, the pH increased from 11.80 to 12.76 when I increased from 0.00 to 2.89, the pH kept still when I (I was less than 4.0) increased. There is single function relationship between the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) and relevant pH in different I.

Brass, a deliberate alloy of copper and zinc, has been known since before Roman times. There are two main methods of making brass: (1) Cementation or calamine process - crushed zinc ore (calamine, ZnC03 , or calcined calamine, ZnO), is mixed with charcoal and small pieces of metallic copper and heated to about 900°C in a closed crucible, (2) Alloying - metallic copper and zinc are melted together in a reverberatory furnace. According to most modern authorities (e.g. Smith and Forbes 1955), the calamine process was the only one used in western Europe prior to the 18th century. At that time, the alloying technique began to take over, because metallic zinc was successfully produced on a large scale for the first time. Previously, this had been a problem because zinc vapourizes at 906°C or about the same temperature at which it can be reduced from its ore. Thus, some means had to be devised to collect and condense the zinc vapour (Tylecote 1976). Metallic zinc was known, however, earlier than the 18th century A.O. Several early finds have been made, including a rolled sheet of metallic zinc found in excavations at the Athens Agora dating to the 3rd to 2nd century B. C. (Farnsworth et al. 1949). The Chinese were producing zinc by at least the 10th century A. D. and, by the 17th century, Chinese zinc ingots were being imported into Europe by the Dutch East India Company (Needham 1974). Metallic zinc is also mentioned in several European documentary sources from the 16th century (e.g. Paracelsus, Agricola). This study traces the changes in Western brass making methods from Classical to Renaissance times by examining documentary and archaeological evidence.

DURING the last 10 years, several grain-growth studies have been made using zone-refined metals with controlled amounts of solute to elucidate the interaction of solute with moving boundaries. In all these studies, it was more or less implicitly assumed that the alloys used were, after recrystallization and grain growth, homogeneous within the grains with respect to solute and lattice defects. This note deals with observations made on microstructures originating from solidification of dilute alloys and from grain growth. Briefly, the experimental procedure used in these studies was the following: zone-refined cadmium and master alloys were melted and cast in Pyrex under vacuum to produce bars 14 mm in diam and about 150 mm long. These bars were cut into 8-mm-thick slices which were mechanically and chemically polished. The specimens were then deformed 30 pct in compression and given a 1-week anneal at 260°C in argon. After this anneal, a second deformation produced completely recrystallized samples 4 mm thick. The time-temperature controlled anneals were carried out in a bath of silicone oil. After the grain-growth anneal, the specimens were polished in Gil-man's' solution (33 g CrOs, 6 g NazSO, in 100 ml of water). Several etches were used depending on the alloy investigated, but mostly a mixture of concentrated HC1 and HNOj (98:2 vol) was employed. In all the alloys examined, the ease with which substructures could be revealed depended strongly on the crystallographic orientation of the surfaces of the grains. However, very frequently the microstructures to be discussed here etched up over broad areas comprising several grains. Fig. 1 is a micrograph of a Cd-0.05 at. pct Mg alloy annealed for 100 sec at 270°C. Different substructures are seen in this photograph. A denotes the now existing grain boundaries. The well-defined lines and points marked B are the remains of a solidification substructure. The lines are boundaries between cell colonies, and the points are nodes located on regular two-dimensional cells. This cellular structure has the same appearance as that found by weinberg2 for rapidly quenched Zn-Au alloys. The "ghost boundaries", marked C, are very similar in appearance to a grain boundary array in a polycrystalline sample. Repeated polishing and etching showed that all the substructures observed were three-dimensional. To date, the ghost boundaries have been clearly observed in all samples containing 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, and 1 at. pct Mg, and in samples containing 0.01 at. pct Zn. Attempts to outline these ghost boundaries in cadmium alloys containing 0.01 at. pct Ag and Au were only partially successful. In these alloys, parallel lines, having a resemblance to the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Mg and Cd-Zn alloys, were observed, but it was not possible to obtain complete arrays of ghost boundaries which extended over several grains. It is possible that a different etch than that presently employed would reveal the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Au and Cd-Ag alloys as clearly as in the Cd-Zn and Cd-Mg alloys. A close examination of the ghost structure showed that it consisted of linear etch-pit arrays, Fig. 2. The ghost boundaries were resolvable even in grains which showed over-all faceting due to the etching, as seen in the corner of Fig. 2. The general appearance of the ghost structure suggests that it originated during grain growth. This is supported by the observation that the mesh width in the ghost-boundary array generally increased with increasing final grain size. To test whether the ghost structure was formed during the long homogenizing anneal or during the grain-growth anneal, some as-cast samples were deformed and given a grain-growth anneal. The project consisted of filling an abandoned underground limestone mine to facilitate construction of a new entrance ramp to I-470 in Lee?s Summit, Missouri. Due to collapse of mined areas near the project site, design included determination of the limits of remediation for the project and minimum construction requirements for mine infilling. The Judy Company, contractor selected for the mine infilling, experimented in the laboratory with several grout mixes to determine the appropriate mix for the project. Infilling was accomplished from the ground surface, and camera observation was used to monitor the barrier wall construction and infilling process. It was discovered that some of the mapped rooms were larger and some were smaller than indicated on the construction plan.

A dynamic gas-mixing system assembled by the Bureau of Mines for the generation of precise gas mixtures from sources of concentrated or pure gases and diluent gases is described. A set of electronic mass flow controllers with maximum flows ranging from 10 to 5,000 ml/min, a so-called Pure Air Generator, and gases in cylinders are used to generate differing gas concentrations. The repeatability of the delivery rate of a flow controller, measured on different days, has a precision of 0.3 pct of the setting. This dynamic gas-mixing system reduces the cylinder inventory and the demurrage charges for special gas mixtures. Gas mixtures that cannot be shipped commercially, such as flammable mixtures of methane in air, can be conveniently prepared by this system. The maximum dilution ratio is 2.5 x 104. Thus, gas mixtures can be made over a wide range of concentrations, from the percent region (by dilution of a pure single-component gas) to fractional parts per million (by dilution of a premixed standard, e.g., a 1,000-ppm mixture). This system is especially useful in determining the response of gas detection devices over the entire range of their measurement. Because the controllers are voltage controlled they lend themselves easily to automated control using computer-based systems.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations aimed at recovering gold as an electroformed sheet from gold eluate and gold leach solutions and slurries are discussed. The electrolytic test work undertaken makes use of high surface area electrodes, in particular nickel-chrome foam metal and activated carbon, as well as ultrasonic activation. The process involves initial gold electrowinning (or adsorption onto activated carbon), followed by gold electroforming, both operations being carried out in a specially designed reactor. The pilot plant work mainly involved the treatment of gold eluate solutions from a South African gold mine containing 600 mg/L Au: some tests were also carried out on gold leach solutions containing 6 mg/L Au. In the former case, very efficient gold extraction onto the foam metal cathode was achieved using electrolysis combined with ultrasonics. The polarity of the gold-loaded cathode was then reversed and, using a replacement electroforming electrolyte, gold was electroformed in situ onto a polished stainless steel mandrel, from which gold sheet was subsequently removed. In the case of leach solutions, pilot plant tests confirmed laboratory findings that in the presence of calcium (resulting from the lime used during the leaching process) no electrowinning is possible. Laboratory tests showed, however, that when sodium (in the form of NaOH or Na2CO3) is added to the leach solution, electrowinning can indeed take place. Alternatively, if a special activated carbon electrode is used (without current), the non-ionic calcium aurocyanide complex is adsorbed on to the activated carbon. When a gold-loaded activated carbon electrode is made anodic in a gold electroforming electrolyte, gold electroforming is feasible, although the efficiency is very low. The possible implications of these developments for gold recovery are further examined.

Designing an appropriate tunnel blasting pattern reduces the cost of rock breakage and subsequent operations such as loading, haulage and support of tunnels. For that reason, we developed a software that designs tunnel blasting patterns. Using this software, three different tunnel blast design models based on parallel hole cut, namely, Swedish, Konya and Energy Balance, were investigated and compared for a virtual tunnel. Accordingly, blasting patterns were designed, for different cross sections. The trend of parameters such as specific charge and specific drilling as functions of tunnel cross-section was determined for each model. Our results show that, in general, The Swedish model gives lower specific charge and specific drilling compared to other models.

En este sentido, Centromin dispone de tecnología para beneficiar esta fuente convencional primaria de plata, donde utiliza el proceso de lixiviación ácido clorurante en pilas para producir aproximadamente 500 mil onzas de plata a un costo menos operativo.

This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of troth exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered.

Many mining operations rely on bulkheads to provide a barrier between impounded water or slurry and active mine workings. However, bulkhead failures could cause and have caused catastrophic flooding that puts the underground workforce at risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH) in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is conducting research to evaluate the adequacy of existing design practices for water and slurry bulkheads. A key component of this research effort is documentation of the performance history and design parameters for bulkheads installed in underground coal mines during the last 20+ years. This research is part of a larger effort to develop general design guidelines and procedures for constructing and maintaining bulkheads that will help to ensure their long-term structural integrity, while significantly reducing the inundation risk for miners. This paper presents the results of NIOSH’s research to identify state-of-the-art bulkhead designs, including design criteria, leakage monitoring systems, and emergency warning systems. Underground observations and evaluations of existing bulkheads suggest that the most important design factors influencing their performance are the interface of the bulkhead with the surrounding strata and the potential magnitude of the hydraulic pressure to which they may be subjected. When a bulkhead has failed, leakage has generally been through the surrounding strata or along the bulkhead/strata interface, with the failure potential along the interface increasing with hydraulic head. It was also determined that development of a monitoring program to ensure the long term structural integrity of bulkheads is an important safety consideration. Current monitoring procedures range from weekly visual inspections to constant monitoring via pressure transducers and fluid level indicators. Where possible, these devices are used in conjunction with a computer based mine monitoring system to alert mine personnel when an emergency condition exists at the bulkhead installation.

Watershed Jll in Jefferson County, Ohio we instrumented in 1977 as one of three watersheds established for the purpose of investigating surface mining and reclamation effects upon local hydrology, sediment discharge, and sediment and water quality. Each watershed was less than 50-acres in size, and was in a different geologic setting within southeastern Ohio. Surface runoff and ground¬water levels were monitored. Samples were taken for sediment determination and chemical analysis prior to mining. Monitoring and sampling continued through the period of watershed disturbance caused by mining and reclamation activities, which began in May 1980 at Watershed Jll. A psuedo-postreclamation period followed the initial cessation of man-machine activity on the watershed. A second reclamation effort occurred in the fall of 1981 and was to be followed by a third in 1982 after observations ceased. A true final postreclamation period was not monitored at this site, because the erosion control practice (terrace diversions) failed after each reclamation. Watershed Jll was a small pasture and wooded watershed with sandstone and shale above the mined coal seam prior to mining. A clay layer under the coal supported a perched saturated zone, termed the top aquifer for convenience. A lower underclay supported a second saturated zone called the middle aquifer. A lower perched aquifer had been dewatered by previous deep mining. After about three years of premine data and about two and one-half years of mining reclamation and psuedo-postreclamation data, the following general observations may be made: 1. The mining-reclamation phase was very short, and the postmining period was characterized by erosion failures and remedial disturbances that kept the watershed condition and size in a state of change. It was impossible to collect sufficient data to confidently characterize the hydrologic-sediment-chemical aspects of the mining period or of a postreclamation period and, most importantly, of the future watershed after its various properties and characteristics have ceased adjusting to its severe disturbance and reconstitution. 2. A seeding of wheat followed by grasses and legumes was not a particularly successful reclamation practice in terms of stabilizing the new soil. Numerous rills and small gullies developed in spite of installed diversions. 3. Storm runoff rates and yields at the watershed outlet increased from the premine, (phase 1) to the mining-reclamation (Phase 2) periods, and remained at or near the Phase 2 level through the postreclamation (Phase 3a) period. 4. The top aquifer changed in physical and chemical character as a result of mining and was becoming reestablished as the project drew to a close; but it is impossible to predict its final configuration or character. 5. Dewatering of the top aquifer resulted in a complete cessation of baseflow because the middle aquifer water table lay below the elevation of the watershed outlet. 6. The top and middle aquifers were merged in one area of the watershed where the upper coal underclay was disturbed. 7. Failure of the diversion terraces and their outlet obscured the effects of the reclamation practice upon sediment concentration and yields. There was little difference in sediment concentrations between Phases 2 and 3a. 8. Drinking water standards were met by surface waters throughout the period of observation except for two samples that exceeded the nitrate-N allowable level of 10 mg/l. 9. In all Phase 3 surface-water samples, iron concentrations were within the limits established by OSM, and manganese concentrations exceeded the regulation level only once. pH fell below the lower regulation level of 6.0 between 10% and 20% of the time. 10. The chemical quality of sediments was generally about the same after reclamation as before mining, with the exception of organic carbon, which decreased.
