Para ellos se seleccionaron 3 alternativas de 5 -en tanto el equipo que seguirá operando en faena, será uno de igual marca y modelo y se contempla un equipo de otra marca, pero de capacidad y performance equivalente. Asimismo, para la evaluación se utilizó el criterio del costo anual equivalente (CAE) que sirve para decidir entre proyectos alternativos y con vidas útiles distintas. Sin embargo, la limitación está en la escasez de información en costos de operación y mantenimiento (O&M), desconocimiento del impacto de las prácticas operaciones, condiciones climáticas en las vidas útiles de los componentes de mayor valor y las condiciones de mercados de equipos mineros en arriendo."

A raíz de un informe de un estudio petrográfico de las relaciones de Casapalca presentado por el Sr Kobe, surge la idea de mejorar la molienda, reemplazando los clasificadores por ciclones. En esta perspectiva se buscó liberar los sulfuros enchapados de las partículas de minerales y asi obtener una mejor recuperación. En Casapalca, el aumento de molienda y la instalación de un nuevo molino, permitió que se desarrolle dos nuevos proyectos: la molienda inicial de la carga alimentada y una remolienda de las partículas gruesas en el circuito de flotación de bulk con retorno del material remolido a la cabeza de bulk, concluyéndose que esta última remolienda, generaría un aumento en el consumo de reactivos, elevando el costo de tratamiento. Por tal motivo, se lo descartó y se utilizó la molienda inicial fina.

The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The scooptram that is used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine the effect of exhaust pipe location and time spent out of the drift, as well as to determine if a relationship existed between CO2 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that has the capability of predicting changes in source strength as well as source location. It was also determined that four relevant factors include effective heading height, apparent longitudinal diffusion coefficient, transverse concentration gradient at the face, and average dispersion width of the exhaust jet. As these factors change with heading geometry and ventilation configuration, they were determined experimentally, Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model; since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate CO2 production. The above four factors in the computer model were calculated using a regression analysis, comparing predicted local concentrations to measured local concentrations. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field. A parametric analysis shows that the exhaust pipe location can have a significant impact on operator exposure to exhaust gases. It was also shown that NO concentration varies directly with C02 levels. Predictions using the dynamic model are contrasted with constant source strength (pollutant flow rate) results. An analysis of these predictions for computing time-weighted average NO shows the dynamic model predictions of operator exposure to this pollutant to be less than one-half of the value predicted using a constant source model.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. The chromium oxide in stainless steel slags usually exists as Cr2O3. However, there is a possibility that it is oxidized to hazardous CrO3 after disposal or during use. Therefore, some technical developments to reduce chromium oxide by using a smelting reduction technique have been reported recently. This paper describes the fundamentals of the technique which have been applied to ferrochromium production and reviews the recent results in literature.

"A pilot-scale flotation column was used to evaluate four polyglycol frothers at Teck’s Highland Valley Copper Mine. The column was fed with flotation plant feed from the grinding circuit cyclone overflow. Frother dosage was changed by controlled addition to the column feed. Pulp, froth and metallurgical performance were assessed using gas dispersion measurements, water recovery and copper, molybdenum and gangue grades and recoveries. Ranking the frothers based on pulp and froth phase performance using gas dispersion measurements and water recovery yielded contradictory rankings. All of the frothers changed the froth structure in a similar manner such that, at the same structural conditions, they all gave the same degree of separation between water and entrained solids. The only difference between the frothers was what dosage was required to achieve a certain structure. Changes in pulp structure appeared to be related to the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) for each frother. Changes in froth structure were not completely described by the CCC and involved other factors, such as the hydrophobicity of particles in the froth. All of the frothers were capable of achieving the same metallurgical result, just at different dosages. Optimal dosages for the frothers were anywhere from the CCC, where copper and molybdenum grades were maximised, to 2 to 3 or 4 to 7 times the CCC, where copper and molybdenum recoveries, respectively, were maximised.INTRODUCTION Background Due to supply issues, Teck’s Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Mine replaced Dowfroth 250C, their auxiliary frother, with Huntsman Polyfroth W31. The primary criterion for selection was that the new frother gave the same performance as Dowfroth 250C, minimising disruption to the circuit. Frothers play a dual role in flotation, altering the bubble size in the pulp zone and the stability of the froth. A stronger or weaker frother, or a blend of both, will alter the balance between pulp and froth effects and, ultimately, metallurgy. Dowfroth 250C and Polyfroth W31 may not necessarily be the best frothers for HVC from a metallurgical standpoint. There may be a different frother or frother blend that could deliver higher recovery in the bulk roughers."

The Fifth International Conference on acid rock drainage (ICARD 2000) was held May 21-24, 2000, in Denver, CO. The three-day conference consisted of about 150 oral presentations and poster sessions that described the state-of-the-art of acid-rock-drainage (ARD) science and technology. The conference also featured a trade show. It included representatives from consulting companies and government agencies with interests in ARD, as well as other environmental issues related to mining. The conference also included field trips to ARD treatment sites and short courses on acid rock drainage issues. ICARD 2000 was planned and promoted by the ICARD 2000 Organizing Committee and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME). Financial support was provided by Barrick Gold, BHP Copper, Homestake Mining, Noranda, Phelps Dodge, PlacerDome, the US Bureau of Land Management, the USEnvironmental Protection Agency and the US Geological Survey. Since the original ICARD was held in Roros, Norway, in 1988, knowledge has improved of the behavior of mine wastes as have methods of environmental mitigation. The ICARD 2000 presented the latest advancements in the field of acid drainage.

"To recover more valuable ore and considering the complexity of minerals, the needs to grind finer is increasing. To reach the desired fine grinding targets, using the existing grinding media size, the energy consumption is increasing exponentially. As already proved at this conference, small grinding media represents the best potential to improve grinding efficiency. How do the small grinding media perform in industrial grinding mills?The use of small grinding media in regrind mills proved that finer grinding can be achieved at lower energy consumption. In ball mills, smaller grinding media versus 25 mm media generate a power saving from 10% to 44%. In vertical stirred mills, the power saving increases from 20% to 60%. More potential savings have been identified.For the same operating conditions, how a vertical stirred mill is performing compared to ball milling? In regrind application, a vertical stirred mill with small media (5-12 mm Millpebs) will require at least 62% less energy than a ball mill charged with 25 mm grinding media.INTRODUCTIONIn some mining applications, fine grinding is needed to liberate further the valuable ore. The purpose of regrind mills is to achieve the last stage of grinding before final flotation stage: the cleaners. In part because of high prices of small grinding media as well as availability, the most widely used size of grinding media is 25 mm.When calculating the recommended ball top size from Bond’s formula (Bond, 1961), the size for regrind applications is much lower than 25 mm. Today, the barrier for small grinding media is broken. They are best suited in regrind application. The size of grinding media is one of the most important variables affecting the mill efficiency (McIvor, R., 1997; Nesset, J.E., Radziszewski, P., Hardie, C. & Leroux, D.P., 2006).Conventional ball milling was discarded for fine grinding because of its very poor energy efficiency (Zheng, J., Harris, C.C. & Somasundaran, P., 1994; Yan, D.S., Freeman, M. & Dunne, R., 1995). Therefore, new technologies as stirred mills were developed to grind finer more effectively. Three fundamental questions should be asked. What is the best fine grinding technology? What should be the best media size to use? Is it possible to grind finer by using less energy with the existing regrind equipment?"

Mineral maps produced via optical and scanning electron microscope û mineral liberation analyser (SEM-MLA) automated mineral identification systems are being used to examine the relationships between mineral phases in spatially well-constrained samples of intact and crushed rock. The use of sophisticated image analysis software allows data pertaining to individual or groups of mineral phases to be extracted from the mineral maps. Analyses of the extracted data can be used to identify populations of phases. Data extracted from the images can be compared with mineral processing data, eg hardness, grindability, degree of liberation, from the same sampling intervals, enabling ore characterisation to be linked to processing behaviours in a spatially constrained, quantified manner that can potentially assist with mine planning and optimisation.

Empero, es necesario conocer el método de cálculo que se ha empleado para determinar la tasa de efectividad del equipo y sobre qué datos se han hecho los cálculos. En esta perspectiva, el presente trabajo describe las herramientas utilizadas en Southern Perú Cooper Corporation para el logro de la calidad de trabajo a través del incremento de la productividad y control de los costos. Para ello, se han utilizado herramientas como: la recolección de datos, visualización de datos, diagramas de Pareto y análisis de beneficios. Asimismo, para una óptima efectividad del equipo deben mantenerse registros precisos de la operación del equipo.

A mineral survey of the Fisher Gulch RARE II area (A5299), Trinity County, California was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. The area is underlain by the Salmon Hornblende Schist. Tonalite stocks 1.5 mi (2.8 km) to the east and northeast of the area intrude the schist and are closely associated with the nearby nines (Cox, 1967). The mines have quartz veins containing sulfides and gold in shears trending east to north past in the schist and tonalite (Hotz, 1972). Strewn and terrace gravel s occupy most of the drainages, many have yielded substantial quantities of gold.

Slag from stainless steelmaking is known to disintegrate, which is an environmental problem and prevents the cooled slag from being utilized. This disintegration is due to the transformation from the ßto the ? polymorph of di-calcium silicate. The transformation is accompanied by an increase in volume of about 11% and a total disintegration of the slag. AOD slag from stainless steelmaking was re-melted in a laboratory induction furnace, together with olivine and calcinated dolomite, to investigate the prevention of disintegration by increased MgO content of the slag with small changes in CaO to SiO2ratio. The modified slag was examined with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The trials showed that an increased MgO content can change the mineral composition towards formation of more Merwinite and Bredigite, which prevents disintegration of the slag. Geologists, engineers, technicians and surveyors have successfully utilized technical software in the mining industry for over 30 years. Software for processing survey, geology, mine engineering and planning information make these functions more efficient by automating repetitive tasks and reducing data processing errors. While these systems have been improved incrementally overtime, new systems that represent giant leaps in technology have been introduced to help mining operations increase productivity and reduce costs. However, their widespread use within the industry has left individual companies without a competitive advantage. Additionally, the ability of these applications to provide the productivity improvements required in today’s uncertain market conditions has since peaked. The next wave of technology—integration of independent software applications—is just starting to emerge and will have a significant effect on the productivity of mining operations. To reap the productivity gains required to remain competitive, mining companies must exploit the collective knowledge and experience of every employee in the organization. Integration of independent software application allows companies to leverage information from all activities, enabling staff to make better decisions to improve productivity. This paper outlines the importance of integration as productivity enabler. Key performance indicators, strategic mine planning, resources management and mine-to-mill integration are discussed as processes that enable productivity. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS)is introduced as the industry’s first integrated solution that enables these productive processes. The paper concludes with a comment on the level of change required to realize the benefits of integration.

So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. As an illustration of this, Fig-s. Nos. I and 2 show a method applied to the copper deposits of the LyellTharsis, Tasmania. Dado que la industria metalúrgica peruana está a la vanguardia de la modernidad, en tanto actualiza sus conocimientos -a través de diversos congresos mineros-, como difunde el uso de nuevas máquinas de concentración de minerales- el objeto del presente estudio describe el problema de los operadores en las plantas de concentración del Perú. En este aspecto, es importante el uso de dichos equipos en el tratamiento de minerales puesto que extraen el máximo de su valor y reducen mínimamente su fundición en el país y el extranjero. Sin embargo, su buen funcionamiento no se limita a una óptima estructura del los equipos, o por la resonancia de su empleo, sino que responde a los operadores de plantas. Durante mucho tiempo,la mayoria de personal empleado en esta labor, se rehusó a trabajar con tales equipos dado sus hábitos, y si lo hacían era más una cuestión de aceptación que de propio conocimiento, tornándose la máquina, como algo secundario. Ante esta situación, se buscó formas de superar dicho problema a través de la enseñanza de los entrenadores, como del interés del trabajador, obteniéndose óptimos resultados en poco tiempo.

IN 1933, the monetary metals were produced in a ratio of 6.7 oz. of silver to 1 oz. of gold, the lowest relatively for silver since the period from 1851 to 1865. At the beginning of that period, the virgin placers of California -and Australia began producing almost simultaneously; in consequence, there was an abrupt fall in the high silver side of the ratio that had prevailed through the centuries after America was discovered. The output from the Comstock and other silver-bearing lodes, located a decade after this influx of new gold began, soon restored the production ratio to its former proportion, that is, a relatively large weight of silver compared to gold.

This study was conducted to make a limited evaluation of experimental and standard tractor dozer blades. A field test program was conducted in the southeastern part of Kansas on strip-mined areas where the spoil banks are parallel with rest-to-crest distances between 90 and 120 ft and maximum dozing distances usually less than 50 ft. This evaluation was a part of an overall joint Pittsburg and Midway Mining Company--U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Specialized Reclamation Field Test Program primarily centered on the field t sting of experimental high-volume lateral relocation blades. The three blades evaluated were the 60-ft-wide angle (A) blade mounted on two 41B tractors. a 48-ft-wide A blade mounted on two D9H tractors, and a 13-ft-wide reclamation universal (Rec U) blade mounted on a D9H tractor. In addition to the experimental blades, three commercially available blades were tested: A 20-ft universal (U) blade mounted on two side-by-side (SxS) D9H tractors; a 20-ft U blade mounted on a 418 tractor; and a l2-ft straight (S) blade mounted on a D8H tractor. The dozer blade evaluations compared measured blade performance with soil and other site characteristics and with estimated earth-moving performance rates based on earthmoving methodology that accounts for the traction and speed of the tractor. The earthmoving methodology was also validated with data collected during this program.
