Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

Coal has been mined in the central Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky for more than a century. The dwindling reserve base consists in large part of coal that would have been considered unmineable by earlier generations. Nearly every current operation is working on a property where coal has been extracted in the past, from seams either above, below, or both. NIOSH is conducting research aimed at helping mine planners prevent hazardous conditions due to multiple seam interactions. To-date, more than 300 case histories have been collected from underground mines, mainly from central Appalachia. This paper focuses on several of the more challenging situations that have been encountered, including: • Room-and-pillar development 20 ft (6 m) beneath full extraction workings at a depth of 1,000 ft (300m) of cover (Virginia) • Pillar recovery 45 ft above full extraction workings at 900 ft (270 m) of cover (Virginia) • Near-simultaneous room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery with 40 ft (12 m) of interburden and 1,500-2,000 ft (450-600 m) of cover (Kentucky) • Longwall mining directly beneath main entries in overlying seams (West Virginia) • Some of these operations have been highly successful in overcoming the challenges, others less so. The lessons learned from their experience will help ensure that these and similar difficult reserves can be mined safely.

El presente texto describe las ventajas del uso del sistema de vectores aplicados en la explotación de los minerales de la mina de Atacocha. Este sistema consiste en dividir el Ore Body a explotarse, en varias partes y que al momento de hacerlo sea de forma alternada, como si se tratase de "Stopes" independientes. Entre las ventajas obtenidas por este sistema, está que el desarrollo de derrumbes se hace menos frecuente debido a que las paralizaciones -ya sea por los derrames de minerales de las cajas de Ore Bodyi -, no delimitan un detenimiento total del área de explotación, sino solo a un sector. Otra ventaja estriba en que el costo por toneladas de todos los stopes trabajados, es menor que el sistema de cuadros empleado. Asimismo, para que el sistema sea completamente efecivo, se deben conocer los límites del Ore Body, a través de los análisis y las muestras de laboratorio permanente.

Asimismo, entre los principales logros de 1973, se desarrollaron los trabajos de levantamientos geológicos, prospecciones y exploraciones mineras como: C. ITOH&CO.Ltd. y el Servicio de Geología y Minería. De otro lado, se realizaron los estudios de exploración por hierro. las metas de producción, inversión, así como se presentó el avance en los principales proyectos de inversión, tanto del sector público como del sector privado reformado.

El molibdeno es un metal de alta cotización en el mercado puesto que se emplea en aleaciones de acero para la construcción de piezas y herramientas de alta duración. Sin embargo, este mercado de concentrados de molibdeno se rige a especificaciones referidas a impurezas y leyes mínimas de Mo, que limitan su recuperación por la relación de esta variable con el grado de los concentrados. Por ello, el presente texto describe un programa elaborado por el Departamento de investigaciones metalúrgicas de CENTROMIN-PERÚ que incrementa las recuperaciones de Mo y la calidad de los concentrados con técnicas de concentración en combinación con métodos hidro y/o pirometalúrgicos.

A mineral survey of the Sill Hill RARE II area (No. 5304), covering 5,200 acres (2,100 ha) of the Cleveland National Forest, San Diego County, California, was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. This survey was in conformance with the Resource Planning Act (RPA) of 1974, as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976, to provide mineral resource information for study area classification. Bureau of Mines personnel made an economic appraisal of mineral deposits by searching pertinent geological and mining publications as well as U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Bureau of Mines files and records. Known mines, prospects, and mineralized localities were examined during 1981, and sampling and mapping were done where warranted. The Geological Survey 'did geologic mapping, geochemical sampling, and geophysical surveys to aid this study.

Keywords: RH refining process, flow of molten steel, two-phase flow, gas holdup, circulation rate, mathematical modeling A three-dimensional mathematical model for the flow of the molten steel in the whole degasser during the RH refining process has been proposed and developed with considering the physical characteristics of the process, particularly the behaviors of gas-liquid two-phase flow in the up-snorkel and the momentum exchange between the two phases. The fluid flow fields and the gas holdups of liquid phases and others respectively in a 90 t RH degasser and its water model unit with a 1/5 linear scale have been computed using this model. The results showed that the flow pattern of molten steel in the whole RH degasser could be well modeled by the model. The liquid can be fully mixed during the refining process except the area close to the free surface of liquid and zone between the two snorkels in the ladle, but there is a boundary layer between the descending liquid stream from the down-snorkel and its surrounding liquid, which is a typical liquid-liquid two phase flow, and the molten steel in the ladle is not in a perfect mixing state. The lifting gas blown is rising mostly near the up-snorkel wall, which is more obvious under the conditions of a practical RH degasser, and the flow pattern of the bubbles and liquid in the up-snorkel is closer to an annular flow. The calculated circulation rates for the model unit at different lifting gas rates are in good agreement with the determined values.

Slags have been produced as by-products from pyrometallurgical processes for thousands of years, and have generally been regarded as waste. Many of these slags are no longer seen as residues merely to be discarded, but as potential economic sources of metals, or as useful by-products in their own right. Slag cleaning can enhance the recovery of valuable metals in existing pyrometallurgical processes, or can produce economic value from recycling old slag dumps. For example, a process has been developed and implemented industrially for recovering cobalt from copper smelting slag in a DC arc furnace. The relatively non-leachable behaviour of glassy slags allows them to be used as a very safe means of disposal of metallurgical waste streams, including many that are classified as hazardous. The high temperatures, reducing conditions, and good mixing that can be achieved in a DC arc furnace enable the effective functioning of this environmentally beneficial means of disposal. Lead blast furnace slag can be rendered safe for disposal by treating it using the Enviroplas process, which strips most of the hazardous lead from the slag (and traps the rest in an insoluble glassy slag) and recovers economic quantities of zinc by absorbing (in a lead splash condenser)the zinc vapour that is fumed off in the furnace. Another example can be seen in the recovery of a chromium- and nickel-containing alloy from stainless steel plant dust, while producing a disposable residual slag. The examples presented here illustrate that it is possible to develop processes that are both economic and environmentally beneficial. "At a current mining rate of 3,750 tons per day, La Mine Doyon is currently the largest gold mine in Canada. La Mine Doyon is an open pit gold mine located in the Abitibi area of Northwestern Quebec. The project is a joint venture between Soquem, a Quebec Crown Corporation in the resource development field and Lac Minerals Ltd., a publicly-held, resource development company. Lac Minerals is the managing company and operator of the project.Doyon went into production in 1980 on a very limited basis at 600 tons/day, and has seen a step wise increase to the current rate of 3,750 tons/day. Initially, all the ore was processed at Noranda Mines, Horne Division as flux for the copper smelter. The East Malartic Mill in Malartic was then upgraded and began processing Doyon ore. The third step in the progressive increase of throughput was the commissioning of the Doyon mill in November of 1982. Doyon ore is currently being processed at all three locations.During 1983, an exploration ramp was driven to explore the ore below the ultimate pit depth. Current plans indicate the sinking of a shaft and the commencement of underground mining during the next 2 or 3 years.Since its humble beginning, La Mine Doyon has always been a success; ore reserves have been extended to the east and the west and will soon be confirmed at depth, the mining and processing rates have been increased 6 fold, and the recovery has been increased from a designed recovery of 85% to over 95%. The intent of this paper is to trace the history and reasons for these rather dramatic improvements."

The performances of four anthracite-burning stokers have been observed under identical 74-hp. steam boilers. Fifty runs of 12 and 24 hours' duration were made in accordance with the test code of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The capacity of each stoker for burning anthracite has been determined, the heat efficiency at each fuel rate has been computed, and the various significant items of hear loss have been estimated. The operating data and results from each run are tabulated in this report in the form used in the test code. The heat efficiencies and most significant operating data for each run are also presented graphically for each stoker to establish the trends with increasing boiler outputs, The tests show that rice anthracite can be burned on stokers adapted to its use at heat-conversion efficiencies of 82 percent or more under continuous firing. These high efficiencies are maintained with fuel inputs 30 percent higher and lower than the peak efficiency rate. Moreover, a heat efficiency of 70 percent or more is obtained at 50 percent of the optimum fuel rate, even though the excess air into the furnace cannot be held below 150 percent.

Over the past century coal miner safety and health has seen tremendous improvements, the fatality and injury rates continue to decrease while productivity continues to increase. Many of the hazards that plagued miners in the past, such as coal bumps, methane and coal dust explosions, ground fall accidents and health issues have been significantly reduced. The contribution of NIOSH research includes products for prevention and survival of mine fires, methane control measures, design procedure for underground coal mines, methods for excavation surface controls, methods and procedures for blasting, laser usage in underground mines and prevention of electrocution from overhead power lines that have reduced accidents and injuries in underground coal mines. Health research has produced products such as the personal dust monitor, noise abating technologies and ergonomic solutions for equipment operators. Research priorities at NIOSH are set by considering surveillance statistics, stakeholder inputs and loss control principles. Future research in coal mining is directed towards respiratory diseases, noise induced hearing loss, repetitive musculoskeletal injuries, traumatic injuries, falls of ground and mine disasters. The recent spate of accidents in coal mines resulted in the Miner Act of 2006 which includes a specific role for NIOSH in future mine safety research and development. The mine safety achievements in the USA reflect the commitment of industry, labour, government and research organizations to improving the safety of the mine worker.

The Bureau of Mines investigated two areas of oil and gas seeps in the north-central Gulf of Alaska--Katalla River to Bering River and Cape Yakataga to Yakutat Bay to determine (1) whether previously reported seeps are still active, (2) the characteristics of the seeping hydrocarbons, and (3) the amount of bitumen contained in the drainage leaving the seeps and entering the Gulf of Alaska. Thirteen separate oil seeps, six bitumen deposits, and eight gas seeps were located, sampled, and analyzed. The oils ranged from 35.2° to 14.1° API gravity and had sulfur contents from 0.53 to 1.31 wt-pct. Bitumen samples had API gravities from 2.4° to 14.6° and sulfur contents from 0.28 to 0.88 wt-pct. Gas samples had specific gravities ranging from 0.577 to 0.883 and caloric values from 724 to 1,427 Btu/cu ft. A total of 63 water samples obtained from seep locations and seep drainages were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for ionic content and by solvent extraction for hydrocarbon content. Although some of the water at the oil seeps had a bitumen content as high as 246,000 mg/1, the amount of hydrocarbons actually reaching the Gulf of Alaska averaged <0.2 mg/1.

El objetivo de este trabajo técnico es mostrar las fuentes de desinformación que impiden el desarrollo de esos proyectos mineros y limitan una concertación viable y el diálogo con diversos stakeholders al no tener un consenso o entendimiento básico sobre temas importantes como son: 1) uso del agua y minería en cabeceras de cuenca, 2) uso de tierras por la actividad minera, 3) contaminación, 4) pasivos ambientales, 5) minería ilegal y 6) conflictividad social. Estas limitaciones en uso y manejo de la información así como la atmósfera social confrontacional persisten aun cuando se trabaje comprometidos con el desarrollo sostenible en un marco de responsabilidad social empresarial.

En este trabajo se evalúa, como una alternativa sostenible para minería subterránea, el reemplazo de agregados por el uso de material de desmonte de mina (zarandeado o chancado) en la elaboración de shotcrete, sin que se afecten parámetros de ingeniería ni factores de seguridad. Los procesos para probar la viabilidad de esta iniciativa partieron de los análisis granulométricos de humedad, absorción y peso específico del agregado. Se procedió a la evaluación del concreto en estado fresco y endurecido, con pruebas de slump, pruebas de rebote y ensayos de compresión simple.

El buen funcionamiento de los equipos de una fábrica depende de la energía eléctrica. Si ocurriesen problemas con esta, se resuelven con tecnologías convencionales como la utilización de bancos de condensadores, filtros activos, UPS, estabilizadores de tensión y protectores de sobretensiones. Sin embargo, el riesgo de utilizarlas es que algunas veces son incompletas o no son compatibles. En ese sentido, el presente texto plantea una nueva tecnología utilizada en otros países que corrige los problemas eléctricos de forma completa y segura. Este un sistema automático completo de ahorro de energía y de la calidad de la onda eléctrica que está dotado de un microprocesador y analiza el voltaje, corriente, factor de potencia y armónicos. Asímismo, permite recuperar la energía perdida para luego filtrarla y devolverla a la red -al tiempo que se agrega una carga adicional sin necesidad de incrementar el tamaño de los transformadores o conductores.

Ante la existencia de un número de zonas inestables y de magnitudes proporcionalmente grandes en las operaciones de minado, se requería de un monitoreo continuo en tiempo real que genere información confiable con exactitud y precisión referente al comportamiento crítico de los taludes para luego evaluar, alertar anticipadamente los colapsos y evacuar de forma segura y oportuna al personal y equipos. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el mejoramiento del monitoreo de taludes a través del uso de radares donde se pudo identificar zonas críticas de desplazamiento de taludes con el fin de mejorar la seguridad del personal, equipos y garantizar la continuidad de las operaciones para asegurar el cumplimiento de los programas de producción de la Mina Cuajone.

You may rest assured I will use my best endeavours to promote the interests of the Institute in every way that lies in my power. In reviewing the work of the past year, it is a matter for congratulation to find the Institute in a position at once so healthy and robust, and that notwithstanding the acute depression which has prevailed in the mining industry.Owing to deaths or departures from the colony, the names of six members have disappeared from the roll of membership, but you will be pleaed to learn that several new members have been elected, the register now, showing 56 Members, 25Associates and 2 Students. A complete record of the papers read and the discussions that took place will be found embodied in the splendid volume of Transactions which has just been issued, and which I am sure will be welcomed by mining engineers in all parts of the world.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2005 draws upon available information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. It provides data on exploration budgets by global region and mineral commodity and identifies significant mineral discoveries and exploration target areas. It also discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based on these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2005. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities in 2005 compiled by the USGS.
