Current production costs and market conditions in the potash industry of the Carlsbad area were studied to determine the potential values of the potash mineral resource that would be lost or foregone if the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility is constructed on the proposed site in that area. The purpose of the WIPP project is to investigate the possibility of developing a nuclear waste disposal plant in the salt formations at the site. Analyses were made of all potash deposits determined to be in the site. Mining and processing under the most favorable recovery systems were considered. Value determinations were based upon estimated operating and capital costs of current mine-mill operations in the Carlsbad area. This study was made for the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) by members of the Federal Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System staff.

En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el desarrollo de la verificación de los estándares operativos (VEO) donde los supervisores lo usan para programar la inspección de sus labores durante la guardia priorizando las inspecciones en función del nivel de riesgo, de forma que este proporciona información importante para la supervisión en tiempo corto sobre el nivel de seguridad de la labor, nivel de reiteración de fallas, trabajadores más riesgosos y controles de menor cumplimiento, etc. a fin de priorizar la supervisión.

Equipment maintenance is 30 - 50 per cent of the operating costs for a typical mining company. While this is substantial, its importance is beyond its significance as a cost heading. Modern mining requires large amounts of investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product sold at a low unit cost. To stay competitive, such a business has to focus on full realisation of its capital investment, ie sustained production at high levels. Maintenance plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Mining companies typically use a mix of breakdown or corrective maintenance, planned maintenance, and some condition-based maintenance. The share of breakdown maintenance has been coming down through more effective planned maintenance and better condition monitoring tools. Planned or preventive maintenance (PM) is playing an increasingly important role in todayÆs mining maintenance. This is the suite of inspection and repair/replacement actions performed at scheduled time intervals as part of a preplanned activity. The activities are scheduled well in advance and, usually, the current wear-state of the machine is irrelevant. For example, the replacement of a major gear may have been planned 18 months in advance; replacement is carried out when the time comes regardless of the actual condition of the gear. The PM costs are significant and include direct cost of parts and labour as well as the opportunity cost of lost production while the machine is under maintenance. It is important to identify the optimum PM effort because over-maintenance should be avoided as much as under-maintenance. A new concept called severity-based maintenance is introduced in this paper. We have seen that measuring equipment ageing in mining merely by counting the engine hours is a very imprecise way of planning and scheduling maintenance because the damage accumulated in one hour varies enormously from operator to operator and with changing pit conditions. We recommend continuous monitoring of duty on all major equipment. This is feasible without having to fit out the machine with an army of sensors because most of the physical sensors required by dutymeters are already installed and maintained as part of the existing performance monitors. While the investment is modest, the potential benefits are huge and can be grouped under three headings:Immediate benefits will come from providing operators with direct feedback on the effect of their behaviour on machine health and training them to use this feedback to correct their operating style. The equipment can operate closer to the limits of capacity, producing more without unduly sacrificing the availability by monitoring and controlling the severity of the operation, ie the duty on the machine. Longer term benefits accrue from establishing correlations between actual time to failure data and measured equipment duty and using these correlations to optimise maintenance effort as well as planning new equipment purchases and warranty conditions.

En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala el uso de un sistema computarizado de modelamiento geológico y planificado tridimensional como herramienta para la planificación eficaz del proceso de minado. La secuencia de minado con 5D Planner, permite planificar la mina para operaciones de explotación subterránea. así como mejorar el planeamiento en etapas previas a la estimación del Valor Actual Neto Económico (VANE) del proyecto.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self aerated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A 0.8 m3 model is considered. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Because of the lack of circumferential periodicity in this machine, the entire machine is modeled and unsteady simulations are conducted in the whole volume of the bulb. Uniform bubble diameter is specified, and the effects of bubble diameter are determined by conducting simulations for three diameters of 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm. The unsteady air flow rate through the machine is predicted as an outcome of the simulations. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different parts of the machine are presented and discussed.

Since 1963, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8179 has served the mining industry as a fundamental safety guide in the field of blasting agents. In the intervening 14 years, many changes have occurred, and this report presents revised and new recommendations which recognize these changes. For example, AN-FO is now supplied mostly premixed, whereas in 1963 much of it was mixed by the blaster; aluminum metal (A1) and other fuels are now often added to AN-FO to increase strength, and flake aluminum powder is used as a sensitizer in water gels; and water gels or slurries that are now extensively used were just coming into practical use in 1963. Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

The paper presents the limit equilibrium equations for the analysis of toppling blocks on a rock slope. The safety conditions are assessed by a numeric procedure implemented in an Excel worksheet. The UDEC numerical program was exploited to validate the procedure. A probabilistic model considering the spacing variability of the discontinuities was developed to define the most relevant parameters in this kind of problems. White Pine Mine section designated for exhaust emissions studies. The MTU Mine Air Monitoring Laboratory was used to gather temperature and C02 concentration data at 10 locations. The data substantiate the presence of strong buoyant forces of the hot exhaust gases which result in stratification in dead end headings. Diesel mine-vehicle tailpipe emissions were monitored in the laboratory by a portable tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) assembled for in-mine use. The results were compared with simultaneous measurements by standard laboratory exhaust monitoring instruments. These results indicate that accurate field source quality control measurements can be obtained for CO2, CO and NO but NO2 results were low for all engine conditions. Diesel pollutant concentration data from the Orchard Valley Mine were analyzed and compared with data collected earlier in the White Pine and Brushy Creek mines. Lognormal frequency distributions and CO2-based concentration ratios and correlations were calculated. In the three mines compared, pollutant concentrations were distributed similarly, and concentrations appear to be controlled to present standards.

In Switzerland two major railway systems as shown below in Figure 1 has recently been completed or is under construction: ¦Lötschberg, south of Bern which was commissioned in 2007 ¦Gotthard, south of Zurich which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016The aim is to increase the transport capacity of the railway system and to transfer more transport of goods to the railway by offering transport of trailers and lorries on the new railway systems. It will have a positive environmental impact but also improve the congested traffic situation of the highways in north-south directionThe Gotthard tunnel is totally 57 km (35 mile) long and the Lötschberg tunnel is 35 km (22 mile) long. Both tunnel systems consist of two parallel single track tunnels connected with cross tunnels at every 333 m (1 093 ft). Additionally there are cross-over tunnels and caverns for installations and operation. In the Lötschberg tunnel, the majority of the excavation has been by Drill & Blast and in Gotthard tunnel the major part is being excavated by TBM.

The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium [Se], which are introduced to seepage waters. Nitrogen species, such as nitrate and ammonia, are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal mining environments in British Columbia, with values ranging from below 50 to over 500 µg/L in site waters. Selenate is the most common form of selenium found in waste rock seepages, and is exceedingly mobile in aerobic freshwaters. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains. Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining wastewaters has proven to be challenging for conventional water treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry. The Electro-Biochemical Reactor (EBR) technology provides electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V), supplying a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the system and microbes at low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical, and robust biotreatment system than found in past generations of biological treatment systems. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required. Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal mine wastewaters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia?s coal-mining wastewaters.

A common problem encountered in the mineral sands industry is that the mineralogical measurements used in defining the resource are not readily converted to metallurgical recoveries, which are used to predict the quantity of the final products. The problem stems from the different objectives of the exploration and metallurgical assessment programmes, and is often compounded by the use of different laboratory techniques and mineral definitions. Common mistakes include the misapplication of routine analysis, incorrect interpretation of mineral recovery, the confusion of mineral recovery with product yield and inconsistent definition of the same mineral. Experience has shown that unless these potential mistakes are identified, the measurement techniques used during exploration and metallurgical assessment are not compatible, often resulting in large errors in the prediction of mineral production. There are no easy solutions to the problem, as there is no universal assay technique which can cost effectively characterize all the mineral sands resources. The recommended course of action will therefore require several iterations to optimize the assay technique to suit the resource. Fundamental to the success of the measurement technique is the understanding of the mineralogy, its behaviour during mineral processing and the quality requirements for the final products.

Experiments with various industrial cathodes ranging from 35 wt.% to 100 wt.% graphitic and fully graphitized carbons were carried out in a laboratory aluminum electrolysis cell. Sodium and cryolite bath penetration into the cathode samples was measured by XRD and SEM-EDS analysis. For a higher cryolite ratio in the bath, the cathodes with lower graphitic carbons exhibited more sodium penetration than the fully graphitized. The increased graphitization in the cathode materials can reduce Na, NaF and Na3AlF6 penetration. SEM-EDS inspection reveals that the sodium and fluorides penetration within the cathode samples has different patterns for varying graphitization of the carbon materials. XRD quantitative analysis indicates that there is a large percentage of Na3AlF6 in the penetrated bath. The results can provide useful information for quality evaluation of the industrial cathode products.
