SRC rockmass classification have been applied to 25 tunnels in Spain and Italy, for which it was found that much heavier supports than those estimated by the RMR index were required. SRC and RMR indices and other relevant geomechanical data were obtained during the site investigation and construction stages. Data corresponding to in situ stress measurements, analysis of tectonic structures, and instability problems arising during construction were used to asses the state of stress. The relationship between tunnel section convergence and the SRC and RMR indices was also analysed. Support measurements based on SRC and RMR classification were compared with those actually used during construction. These analyses indicate that for most of the tunnels examined, supports estimated using the SRC were much closer to those actually installed than those predicted by the RMR index. Bei der Verwendung des SRC-Systems zur Klassifizierung des Gesteins als Baugrund für 25 Tunnel in Spanien und Italien wurde festgestellt, dass viel schwerere Abstützungen benötigt wurden, als wenn die Beurteilung anhand des RMR-Systems angefertigt würde. Die Klassifizierung anhand des SRC- und des RMR-Systems, sowohl als auch andere wichtige geomechanische Daten wurden während des Ablaufs der Erkundungen und der Bauausführung gewonnen. Die Resultate der Messungen der Spannungen vor Ort, die Analyse der tektonischen Struktur und die Stabilitätsprobleme während der Bauausführung wurden dazu verwendet, um den im Felsgrund vorherrschenden Spannungszustand zu definieren. Das Verhältnis der Messungen der Tunnelkonvergenz zu dem SRC- und RMR-Index wurde auch analysiert. Die durch das SRC- und RMR-System vorhergesagte Grösse der Abstützung wurde mit der Grösse der Abstützungen verglichen, die am Bau letztlich verwandt wurden. Diese Vergleiche zeigen, dass für die meisten der studierten Tunnel die Vorhersage der Abstützungen, die anhand des SRC-Systems angefertigt wurden, viel näher der wirklich verwendeten waren als die Vorhersage anhand des RMR-Systems. The legislation for the disposal of heavy metals contaminated substances is still going to be tightened up in the future. The main criteria for the utilization or deposition of these residues are the content and the water solubility of these metals. Through this, the use of slags from the lead-and zinc-industry in road building may become limited or even not possible at all. From an economic point of view this would lead to Pb/Zn losses and costs for safe dumping. This paper investigates the feeding of the reducing agent via hollow electrode DC smelting and the yield of metal reduction. After carrying out thermodynamic calculations, the process window conditions for electric-arc furnace tests were determined. Doing this, the zinc could be reduced, evaporated and recovered as an oxidic intermediate product flue dust, while the lead was present either in flue dust or in metallic form. The zinc content in the final slag could be reduced by up to 90%. The slag product has undergone an eluation test which allows it to be used as building materials. Transalloys produces 160 000 tons of SiMn per annum from five AC submerged-arc furnaces. The lime-ore melt from two AC open-arc furnaces is contacted with SiMn to produce 50 000 tons of medium carbon FeMn per annum. Metallics in the slag are reclaimed in a jigging plant, which has been in operation since 1999. The flow of materials between the jigging plant and furnaces has been optimised. The amount of recycle slag in the feed of the SiMn furnaces has been decreased by more than 30% which still provides satisfactory stability of the furnace operation. The jigging plant has absorbed all the additional slag generated, to recover SiMn metal. A review of the raw materials used and operating parameters for SiMn production was also undertaken. Slag to metal ratios were decreased by more than 30% by reducing the slag recycle, removing magnesite from the recipe and introducing high-grade ore. Electrode penetration was improved by reducing coke levels and by utilising more reactive coal. The pitch circle diameter (PCD) was reduced to get a better operating stability on furnace no 5 using the MINSTRAL Control System. Energy consumption on the furnaces improved by more than 15% while SiMn production increased as a result by more than 18%.

The melting phenomena of manganese ore, slag and alloys were studied in an experimental sessile drop furnace. Particles of approximately 20-60mg were placed on graphite substrates and then heated at a constant rate of 5°C/min up to 1830°C in a controlled gas atmosphere of Ar or CO. The shape of the particle was photographed with a digital video camera every second. It was observed that the melting behaviour can vary significantly, with some particles exhibiting a large softening/melting range. Selected samples were sectioned and then analysed with EPMA. The implications of the results on understanding industrial furnace operations are discussed.

A pressurizing system was designed and built to apply a radial pressure of 5.000 psi to rock samples. Samples of the Bradford, Weir and Kirkwood sandstones were subjected to radial pressures parallel and perpendicular to the bedding in the system and the changes in conductivity, porosity and permeability were deter-mined. Asymptotic decreases in conductivity, porosity and Klinkenberg permeability were observed over the 0- to 3,500-psi range. From these data, the increase of formation factor over the same range was calculated. The cementation exponent expressed in the Archie equation was found to increase with pressu,re. The rate of change varied from formation to formation. Only small differences were observed for samples taken parallel to the bedding as comnared to those taken perpendicular to it except for the Bradford sand. Above 3,500 psi the data are not good enough to tell if the properties continue to fall-off asymptotically or in a different manner. A possible explanation for the probable litnit of the asymptotic rate around 3,500 to 4,500 psi is that this represents the maximum pressure which the formations have unrdergone during their geological life as a result of burial. INTRODUCTION For many years measurements have been made in the laboratory of the properties of oil-bearing sandstones with little consideration being given to whether these properties had been changed when the samples were moved from their original position in the ground to the laboratory. Relatively little has been reported in the literature on the effect of pressure on the properties of sandstones. The changes in permeability for eight typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure (0- to 15,000-psi range) was presented by Fatt and Davis' in graphical form. In 1953 Fatt' also reported the relationship between porosity and overburden pressure for four typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples (0- to 5,000-psi range). Fatt later described the changes of formation factor and porosity of 20 typical oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure changes (0- to 5,000-psi range) giving the values of the coefficients and exponents in the Archie' equation, and the more general Winsauer equation', where C, k and m are empirical constants, F is the formation factor, and + is the porosity. During the experiments of this investigation the core was contained in a neoprene rubber sleeve as shown in Fig. 1. It was held between two steel end members which were mounted in a steel cylinder. INTRODUCTION The results of the Japanese dissective investigations have [l-4] transformed our understanding of how the blast furnace operates. These studies revealed an internal structure of the furnace burden with five main zones, as illustrated in Figure 1. In the granular zone the charged material retains its structure whereas in the cohesive zone the iron ore particles are at advanced stages of reduction and form a semi-molten mass with a relatively high flow resistance. In the active coke zone molten iron and slag flow through a matrix of loosely packed coke. The raceway is a relatively small void space generated by displacement of coke due to the hot blast momentum, whilst the hearth is packed with coke, slag and molten iron. [ ] It is now well appreciated that furnace control is largely achieved and maintained by using the burden charge distribution to determine the gas glow distribution within the furnace and, hence, the shape and extent of the cohesive zone. In fact, Wakayama et a1 [5] of Nippon Steel Corporation state that optimum furnace operation is synonomous with the formation of a desirable cohesive zone shape, which in turn is almost solely determined by the burden charge distribution and its mechanical properties [6]. Much of the development work on operating furnaces since the dissective investigations has been oriented towards the identification of external furnace measures which reliably predict the shape of the cohesive zone. Currently the most popular measures are top gas temperature, velocity and CO/CO, ratio profiles [5]. More recently pressure distributions as evaluated from a series of wall measurements down the height of the furnace are also being utilised [7] to identify the position and shape of the cohesive zone. A great deal of emphasis has been placed upon achieving a consistent quality in the burden charge materials, establishing a suitable set of operating conditions and only making changes when forced to, ie., the operation for some reason moves outside a desired operating range or the production requirements change. Operational control schemes based upon this philosophy (eg., Kawasaki's GO-STOP system [8]) have been remarkably successful at achieving both high production rates and relatively low fuel costs. Mathematical models have long been used as tools to assist in the analysis of the blast furnace process. Although, the models have been useful in post-operative analysis and for identifying trends, etc., they have not proved reliable for detailed design criteria or as the basis for effective control schemes. Surface deformation monitoring is required all over the mining industry. For example oil and gas companies need this information to support exploration and production activities and to detect impacts from surface subsidence of existing hydrocarbon fields. Also opencast mines require large area information of subsidence due to dewatering of the overburden. Because of this, a lot of surface deformations measurements with GPS or traditional geodetic measurement techniques have been conduced during the last decades. This paper presents the actual capabilities to analyze GPS data using the state of the art Bernese GPS Software for GPS post processing. A new way of monitoring subsidence is a combination of GPS and satellite InSAR data. Considering this it is hoped that a combined strategy will permit receiving overall more information by integrating high point density of InSAR and accuracy of GPS. DMT is one of the leading actors on GPS services especially for monitoring surface movements from underground activities e.g. mining, water pumping or oil and gas exploitation. The paper will discuss preferences and problems of this approach on results of a current project of DMT.

"Aging effect on the wear resistance of alumina particulate-reinforced 6061 aluminum matrix composites with a block-on-ring wear tester has been investigated. Specimens with various Al2O3 volume fractions of 0%, 10% and 20% were employed in this work. Experimental results indicated that over-aged monolithic 6061 Al had the best wear resistance, as compared with under-aged and peak-aged conditions. For the composite containing 10% Al2O3, over-aging and peak-aging resulted in similar wear resistance, which was higher than that for underaging conditions. For the composite containing a high volume fraction (20%) of Al2O3, the wear resistance reduced with the increase in aging time. Although longer aging time was favourable to the wear resistance of monolithic 6061 Al, it was detrimental to that for the Al2O3/6061 Al composite with high volume fraction of particles. IntroductionMetal-matrix composites (MMCs) have received attention in many engineering applications because of the demands for high specific strength (strength-to-weight ratio) and specific stiffness, good high temperature capabilities and wear resistance. The manufacturing processes of fiber-, whisker-, and particulate-reinforced MMCs have been well developed (Hosking et al., 1982). Because of the reduction in fabrication cost, the applications of MMCs have been widely extended to light weight-bearing sleeves, calipers, automobile parts (brake rotors, drive shafts, connecting rods, piston rings, and cylinder liners), sporting goods, aerospace components, tanks (wheels, speed brakes, and track shoes) and other industrial applications. Among the three types of metal matrix composites, particulate-reinforced MMCs are promising because of their homogeneous and isotropic material properties and low cost. Additionally, they can be formed using conventional metal processing techniques."

Precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels have traditionally been designed with conventional steel bar reinforcement. In many cases, this has been satisfactory in service, but in others, major problems have occurred with the durability of the linings. Commonly this has resulted from corrosion of the reinforcement, mainly from chloridesin ground water, causing spalling of the concrete and leading to very expensive and disruptive repair programs. This paper discusses the relative merits of designing tunnel linings with steel fiber reinforcement to provide long-term durability, improved impact resistance and toughness for greater load capacity across joints, enhanced robustness during transportation and erection, plus improved fire resistance with the addition of polypropylene fibers. Guidance is also given in the selection of the correct fiber type, mix design and testing methods to establish the optimum dosage required and production techniques to ensure even distribution and compaction.

The paper proposes two numerical models ot the mechanical behaviour of chalk. First, an elasto-plastic constitutive law reproduces the different plastic mechanisms of the chalk and the influence of pore fluids by introducing the concept of suction. Secondly, a model able to reproduce time dependence behaviour. Eventually, the paper gives a simulation of an academic reservoir during depletion and waterflooding phase. Der Artikel stellt zwei numerische Modelle des mechanischen Verhaltens der Kreide vor. Das erste ist ein elasto-plastisches Modell, das verschiedene plastische Mechanismen der Kreide und den Einfluss von Porenflüssigkeit, unter dem Begriff der Suktion, reproduziert. Das zweite Modell berücksichtigt darüberhinaus das zeitabhängige Verhalten. Schliesslich zeigt die Veröffentlichung eine Simulation einer theoretischen Lagerstätte während der Entleerung und der Wasserinjektion. L'article propose deux modèles numériques du comportement mécanique de la craie. Le premier est une loi élasto-plastique qui reproduit les différents mécanismes plastiques de la craie et l'influence du fluide interstitiel par l'introduction de la notion de succion. Le second est un modèle prenant en compte les effets différés. Enfin, l'article présente une simulation d'un réservoir académique durant les phases de déplétion et d'injection d'eau.

Comminution and flotation circuits are frequently perturbed by disturbances, such as feed particle size variations, ore hardness and varying mineral liberation, which can have a significant impact on the recoveries and grades. Although advanced control strategies can neutralize many of these disturbances, few such systems have been implemented at present. One reason is that it is only recently that the requisite sensor systems have been developed and used to control froth flotation systems. Another is owed to the complexity of these non-linear interactive systems. In this paper, a plant-wide control strategy is considered, wherein both unit operations have a single overall control objective. The automated design of the controller is based on an advanced evolutionary algorithm viz., Symbiotic, Memetic Neuro-Evolution (SMNE), for developing neural network controllers in a reinforcement learning framework. A rigorous phenomenological comminution and flotation model was used to develop suitable neurocontrollers, which used all possible sensor inputs and available manipulated variables. The neurocontroller managed to identify optimal or near-optimal operating conditions consistently and showed robust performance in the presence of significant disturbances. The results suggest that evolutionary reinforcement learning offers a very competitive approach towards the development of integrated non-linear controllers for mineral processing plants. Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 45 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonnes of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in the US and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.

Traditionally, iron ore has been reduced with coke in a blast furnace and the hot-metal product of the blast furnace containing carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and phosphorous, was subsequently refined in a steelmaking furnace. During iron making as well as during steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Two decades ago, more than 13 m tonne of blast furnace slag and 4 m tonne of steelmaking slag per annum were produced in the USA alone. It is, therefore, not surprising that many attempts have been made to re-use iron and steelmaking slags. However, these slags are not merely metallurgical waste products but, on the contrary, their compositions and physical properties are judiciously designed to optimize the operations in the respective metallurgical reactors. The variation in composition and properties of blast furnaces lags are largely determined by the gangue in the ore and ash in the coke and much progress has been made in the re-use of such slag. With respect to steelmaking slag, emphasis has in recent years been placed on hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburization. The bulk removal of silicon, phosphorous and sulphur from the hot-metal product of the blast furnace by specially designed slags prior to refining in a basic oxygen furnace, has reduced tap-to-tap time, lowered cost and produced steel of much higher quality. The use of synthetic slags in ladle refining techniques subsequent to decarburization in the basic oxygen furnace has resulted in reduced hydrogen and nitrogen contents and reduced solute impurities. Moreover, inclusion shape and composition control, again by the use of specially designed slags has led to the achievement of much improved mechanical properties of the steel. In these revised process routes, slag of different compositions are produced in the variety of unit processes and hence the re-use of steelmaking slags has become much more complex. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the design and use of these different slags is a pre-requisite to the development of re-use strategies. Japanese steelmakers have spearheaded attempts to reduce slag volumes in the individual unit processes and to strive towards ‘slagless steelmaking’ by recycling slags internally. Steelmaking slag volumes have been reduced on commercial scale from about 140 kg/tonne steel to 60kg/tonne steel. Moreover, model predictions have shown that, in principle, all slag can be recycled and the phosphorous extracted to produce fertilizer. El presente trabajo describe una forma de financiamiento en la minería a través del mercado de valores. Es decir, que desde un análisis del sector minero se busca convertir las reservas minerales probadas en un patrimonio fideicometido que avale una emisión de bonos titulizados. En este sentido, las reservas minerales por sí mismas carecen de valor económico pero se pueden valorizar con un proyecto de factibilidad futuro, cuya titulización de reservas minerales, se convertirá en una herramienta de financiamiento alternativa o complementaria a la BVL Venture Exchange. Po ello, el financiamiento que se obtenga a través del mercado de valores se destinaría a la ejecución del proyecto minero junior o para expandir uno en producción.

The Derby and Alexander Claim, located within the Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), has placer gold resources. No lode deposits are known within the area, but lode gold deposits are found within 1 1/2 mi of the WSA. In additon, rock units which contain lode gold deposits north of the WSA are found within the northern portion of the study area. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Ridge Wilderness Study Area (WSA), CA-030-402, encompasses 4,623 acres of BLM administered public land in Trinity County, California, about 35 mi west-northwest of Redding (fig. 1). Major access to the Tunnel Ridge vicinity is by U.S. Highway 299. Ac-cess to the WSA boundary is by a secondary paved road from Junction City and several light duty dirt and gravel roads (fig. 2). The WSA is on the southwest slope of Weaver Bally Mountain. The topography is rugged with moderate to steep slopes; elevations range from about 1,600 ft to 5,900 ft.

This publication contains 14,242 analyses of gas samples from oil and gas wells and natural gas pipelines in 40 States and 24 foreign countries. These gas samples were collected in the period 1917-85 as part of the Bureau of Mines survey for helium occurrences. The gas analyses contained herein were made by several methods over the period covered. Analytical work on samples collected early in the period was done on the Orsat apparatus. The one-cut apparatus and four-cut fractional distillation equipment were added later. A mass spectrometer was acquired in 1949 and used for all gas analyses made after that time. From 1917 to 1978, helium analyses were made on special helium analytical equipment designed and built by the Bureau of Mines Helium Operations Laboratory. In 1978, this apparatus was replaced in the quantitative helium analysis work by a gas chromatograph.

The lignite resource in the southern part of the South Island is New ZealandÆs largest source of indigenous primary energy. The ten deposits evaluated by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB) have a total recoverable reserve of 6.2 billion tones equivalent to 74 000 PJ of energy or 20 times the original energy content of the Maui gas field. Updating the economics of the original LFTB studies indicates that lignite could be mined for between NZ$1.0 and 3.0/GJ. Its conversion to synthesis gas for production of petroleum products, chemical methanol, ammonia/urea fertiliser or electricity would be in the national benefit and likely to be commercially economic at todayÆs product prices.

El presente trabajo describe el sistema y los métodos para la extracción del oro en la planta de beneficio de Andaray Gold Mines, alcanzando una productividad óptima en el campo metalúrgico. La mina está situada en San Juan de Chorunga, provincia de Condesuyos, departamento de Arequipa, donde sus yacimientos mineralizados son de dos tipos: los yacimientos descompuestos que contienen limonita y oro libre, perteneciente a la mina Mercedes , y los de mineral piritoso aurífero, que comprenden chalcopirita y ojos de galena, perteneciente a la mina San Juan. El proceso de explotación se inicia con el transporte del mineral hasta su descarga en la parrilla de apertura. E mineral que no pase por la parrilla, se deriva a la chancadora durante 10 horas. Posteriormente pasa por la molienda para luego ser clasificado. Allí se adicionan los reactivos para la flotación y su análisis de malla. Producto de la flotación se obtiene el concentrado. El filtrado de los concentrados conlleva su envío a la molienda secundaria durante un período de seis horas. En este estado, la partícula de oro se encuentra limpia y en óptimas condiciones para la amalgamación y cianuración, donde el mercurio y la amalgama son exprimidos en una lona, destilándose, y se procede a la solución del oro, respectivamente. El método seguido es la agitación neumática, que suelta aire comprimido para la elevación del concentrado por el tubo elevador. Prosiguen los efectos de decantación, operación, control del cianuro y del alcali libre, precipitación, clarificación, limpieza y función de los precipitados. En el laboratorio se realiza el control de muestras del circuito de flotación, cianuración y de las barras, utilizando los métodos de soluciones de cianuro, ensayo de concentrados, minerales de mina, cabeza y relaves y ensayos de los precipitados. Finalmente, los cuadros de consumo de reactivos, mostrarán la eficacia del sistema y los resultados económicos de la planta de beneficio, como los costos, eficiencia de plata y mano de obra.

One of the most difficult areas in concession contracts in resource-rich developing countries is achieving an equitable balance between the interests of investors, host states and, increasingly, mine and near mine communities. While some countries in the Andean region have resorted to outright or creeping expropriation of natural resource contracts under the guise of resource nationalism, others such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), have claimed international best practice in the review (and setting aside) of important concession contracts.
