In this report commercial blasting compounds are classified according to their nitroglycerin (or equivalent explosive oil) and ammonium nitrate content as dynamites, gelatins, blasting agents, military explosives, and blasting , accessories. The ingredients and more significant properties of each explosive are tabulated and briefly discussed. Data are summarized from various handbooks, textbooks, and manufacturers' technical data sheets, together with the author's personal experience; however, this report is not intended to be a technical handbook, since it does not deal with blasting techniques. Instead, it seeks to acquaint the reader with the great variety of explosives, available, their advantages and disadvantages, and their general areas of application. Properties discussed are weight strength, cartridge strength, detonation velocity, density, detonation pressure, water resistance, and fume class. The weakness of the strength rating system and the importance of detonation pres- , sure, density, and detonation velocity in rating explosives are discussed. The terms "blasting agent" and "slurry," which are often misused, are defined. Trends indicate that blasting agents (that is, blasting mixtures with none of of the ingredients singly classified as an explosive), particularly high-density slurry blasting agents, will dominate the explosives field in the future.

Soil and vegetation development were studied on abandoned mine sites near Velva in Ward County, North Dakota. The sites studied were 1, 7, 17, 30 and 45 years old since abandonment; unmined sites were also studied to provide measures of comparison. Species diversity was the highest at unmined sites (114) and lowest at the I year old site (26); sites 7, 17,30 and 45 years old had 37, 52, 43 and 68 species, respectively. Stand ordination revealed that site ages were the most important in influencing species diversity and composition. Stand-environ-mental complex ordinations encompassing 53 variables showed topographic variables to be the most important followed by site ages. Rates of nutrient accumulations were as follows: organic carbon 13.1 g m-2 yr-1; nitrogen 2.5 g m-2 yr-1; phosphorus 0.01 g m-2 yr-1; potassium 0.49 g m-2 yr-1. Carbon-nitrogen ratios showed the widest range for 1 year old sites (5-40) but 70 percent of the 45 year old sites showed values below 15 which were com-parable to the unmined mixed grass prairie sites. Species distributional diagrams are provided to show their habitat preferences which may be helpful in formulating species prescriptions for revegetation.

Most mines in the Bundamba, North Ipswich, and Rosewood districts of the West Moreton coalfield of south eastern Queensland have installed washing plants during the last five years. Many problems were encountered in their installation, including the small size of washing plant required in many cases, the economical minimum ash content under present and future market requirements, production from a one-product washbox of large and small coal of quality to satisfy both markets, measures to avoid adding unnecessary moisture to the washed slack coals, and excessive middlings in some coals or soft clay in others.INTRODUCTIONIt was fortunate for Brisbane, which was to become the capital of a new State, Queensland, in 1859, and grow into a city of over half a million people by the time of its centenary, that coal was found in abundance almost on its doorstep near Ipswich, the first mine being opened at Redbank in 1843. This was followed by the opening of many more mines in that district and, some 40 years later, in the nearby Rosewood district where high-volatile gas coal was produced (Fig. 1). These discoveries ensured a supply of reasonably priced coal (currently about 85/- per ton delivered) in Brisbane, but the quality is inferior to that of other coals mined in Queensland beyond economic range of Brisbane.Various factors led to an increase in the average ash content of the West Moreton coals during and after the war. Between 1940 and 1952 the gasworks coals rose in average ash from 13 8 per cent to 23·9 per cent and the powerhouse coals from 17·1 per cent to 27·1 per cent. This drift was arrested by the installation of 28 screening and picking plants from 1952 onward, but it became obvious that mechanical cleaning of the coals was essential due to the competitive market for coal and the worsening quality of reserves.

In order to provide an initial approach to the deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite in the central area or the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, the U.S.B.M. and associated contractor personnel drilled and cased a 96-inch ID shaft to a depth of 2,371 feet. The shaft was constructed using ?big hole? drilling techniques and succeeded in giving access to previously inaccessible deposits of the above minerals. This report documents the construction from its beginning in January 1977 to its completion in January 1978. Procedures used and problems encountered are discussed in detail.

El presente estudio describe el proceso de volitización de plata-plomo y otros valores metálicos como cloruros en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation. La aplicación de este procedimiento busca recuperar metales como la plata y el oro, así como los metales menores: bismuto, cadmio, teluro, etc., los cuales se perciben en los humos, producto de la volatización de los valores metálicos. En este sentido, el proceso de volatilización de plata y plomo como cloruros aplicado en altas temperatura, es metalúrgicamente fac¡tible, ya que logra una eficacia de plata entre 80 y 84% y no menos de 95% de plomo. Asimismo, el uso de la cama fluidizada como reactor usado en la experimentación, es el más conveniente dado que se puede obtener mayor concentración de valores en los productos de condensación de los cloruros volatilizados.

Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. Safety and health professionals from all sectors of industry recognize that training is a critical element of an effective safety and health program. A major concern in the mining industry is how to train both an aging workforce and the expected influx of new miners and mine managers as older workers retire. Thus, a review of some of the basic principles of adult learning may be helpful to mine trainers. This paper discusses the principles of adult learning based on research in education and psychology. It stresses the importance of taking a systems approach to training, focusing on the relationship between the environment and technology, and understanding how workers interact with both. The authors argue that the principles of adult learning and a systems approach are fundamental to the delivery of effective training in the mining industry. Examples of training programs developed by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are presented within two broad performance domains: routine and nonroutine skills. Basics of curriculum development are also briefly presented to provide the mine trainer with a template for program development.

The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

"AbstractA laboratory study has been undertaken to establish common understanding of the creep phenomenon of a Portuguese soft soil chemically stabilised with binders. In order to study the effect of different stress levels on the strength and on the creep behavior of the stabilised soil, oedometer creep tests and unconfined compressive tests were performed at different curing times. Results show that the creep stress level does not influence the unconfined compressive strength. In addition, the creep phenomenon increases the unconfined compressive strength of the treated soil. Two different secondary compression indexes were recognized from the one-dimensional compression curve which increase with an exponential trend with the creep stress level.IntroductionConstruction on soft soils requires a mandatory soil stabilization work to improve mechanical characteristics of the natural soil. Deep mixing method is a worldwide employed ground improvement method, nevertheless the creep phenomenon hasn’t been yet thoroughly analyzed. Most of the published papers have focused on the analysis of the compressibility and the strength of the soil-binder mixtures without considering the creep phenomenon. However, numerical results (Venda Oliveira et al. 2009) have shown that although settlements that occur during the creep stage (namely creep strains) are less in case of treated columns, they are still important especially due to the high loads applied to the stabilised soil. The few published studies about creep behavior of soil-binder mixtures reveal that the stabilization of an organic soil with cement induces a reduction of creep deformations, which is related to the amount of cement used and that the increase of the organic matter of the soil has a negative impact on soil stabilization, further inducing a slight increase in the creep deformations (Venda Oliveira et al. 2012).As part of the current research the effect of different stress levels on the creep behavior of a soft clayey-silt soil was studied. The binder mixture used to enhance the properties of the soil had a specific composition and quantity. Unconfined compressive strength tests (UCS) and UCS creep tests were carried out at pre-set curing times in order to analyze the creep behavior of the soil-binder mixture. In particular five different creep stress levels were studied to understand its influence on the strength and on the compressibility of the stabilised soil. In addition, considerations about the secondary consolidation index are also presented."

Mediante el método integral de remediación químico activo MRTI-SLFCH se lograron reducir los valores de concentración de metales pesados o parámetros inorgánicos, sometiéndolos a un retratamiento metalúrgico de flotación y/o concentración gravimétrica y adecuándolos a la regulación del Estándar de Calidad Ambiental del Suelo (ECA Suelo). Los relaves detoxificados se convierten en agregados de construcción para fabricar ladrillos ecotecnológicos.

"In the ten years from 2003 to 2013 global mine production of copper has increased by over 23% to meet demand while the weighted average head grade has dropped from 0.9 to 0.7% Cu. These divergent trends of increasing demand and declining economic grades will extend the life of many existing mines and improve the viability of marginal and/or complex copper deposits. Against that context this paper outlines hydrometallurgical copper sulphide leaching options as alternatives to the more conventional pyrometallurgical processing route of copper sulphides. Three copper sulphide leaching and refining processes are discussed: total pressure oxidation, ferric sulphate leaching and copper chloride leaching. The effect of mineralogy on the choice of processing technology is discussed as well as some of the unit processes used. Additionally, possible benefits that a hydrometallurgical process may offer over an existing pyrometallurgical route are discussed. Subsequently, two very important aspects to the development of projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides are discussed. Finally, a number of conclusions are presented that will be useful to keep in mind when considering projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides. One of the most common errors uncovered while performing a reserve, or resource, audit is not in the geological modeling or grade problems due to poor sampling, prepartion or assaying. The error most commonly found is in tonnage or, more specifically, in the tonnage factor - that factor applied to volume to derive tonnage. Tonnage factors In the metric system, the tonnage factor is the density, or specific gravity. Specific gravity (Sp.g.) is defined by Dana (1947): • "The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density to that of water at 4° C (39.2° F). • "Density is the mass of the unit volume or weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water." When Sp.g. is multiplied by the metric volume it yields metric tonnes. In the English system, the tonnage factor is usually expressed in cubic feet per short ton (cu ft/st). When the volume in cubic feet is divided by cu ft/st, the resulting figure is in English short tons. Table 1 gives the cu ft/st factors equivalent to specific gravities from 1.6 Sp.g. to 5.8 Sp.g. The table is based on the following equation: cu ft/st = 0.9072 divided by Sp.g. times 0.02832 The blase attitude that most geologists have toward tonnage factors is echoed in the prevailing definitions of Reserves and Ore, as provided by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (S.C Form S-18), Canadian National Policy 2A and the SME Proposal for Reporting Terminology (SME February 1991). In each case, it is stated that "quantity" (SEC, SME), or "tonnage" (Can.2A), "is computed from dimensions revealed in...." etc. Unfortunately, "dimensions" do not directly yield tonnage. Dimensions must be factored by density to derive tonnage.

It is undisputed that an interaction between mine fires and mine ventilation systems exists. The ventilation carries the poisonous and sometimes explosive combustion products, which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires, through the mine and it provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. The fire, on the other hand, can produce considerable ventilation disturbances which make it difficult to predict the path along which the combustion products travel. The opinions, how serious a threat such fire generated ventilation disturbances are, vary. Where shallow deposits are mined and brisk ventilation currents are used, it is frequently felt that these disturbances are of no serious concern. Where mine workings extend over larger elevation differences and where such disturbances have been encountered and been the cause of some larger disasters, their assessment is an integral part of all fire emergency plans. The author felt that the potential of digital computers for the design of ventilation emergency plans, contrary to their acceptance for conventional ventilation planning for more than two decades, is not yet fully utilized. He designed a program for the simulation of ventilation systems under emergency conditions in particular fires. "The carbon-in-pulp process for recovery of gold dissolved in dilute cyanide solutions, in the presence of solids, has now replaced the convedntional processes of pregnant liquid/barren solids separation followed by Merrill-Crowe precipitation. Most plants built over the past ten years incorporate a CIP section. The process is described as cheaper in capital and operating costs, and few major start-up or operational difficulties are reported. For the purpose of the present paper, the CIP process will be assumed to consist of the following sequence of operations (Figure 1):- the slurry stream coming out of the cyanidation circuit is first screened to remove any tramp oversize material. Gold dissolution is assumed to be complete before entering the CIP circuit.- the slurry is sent into a series of agitated tanks in which it is mixed with activated carbon. The carbon particles size is much coarser than the top size of the ground ore. The tanks are fitted with screens that allows the slurry to overflow continuously into the next tank, while retaining the carbon in the tank. Slurry dilution is adjusted to prevent carbon from settling in the tanks. Agitation intensity is kept low in order to minimize carbon abrasion.- carbon is transfered from tank to tank in a discontinuous manner. According to a specific schedule, the carbon from tank one is removed, then carbon from tank two is sent to tank one, and so on, till the last tank, which is filled with regenerated carbon corning from the elutionregeneration section. The amount of carbon removed, the transfer from tank to tank, the sequence of transfer, the carbon inventory in the various tanks are parameters which are, up to a point, at th2 discretion of the operators, as long as they remove, batch wise, an amount of loaded carbon containing a similar quantity of gold to the one that has entered the circuit since the last transfer."

The interaction between ore-bearing fluids and the siliciclastic rocks typically hosting orogenic gold deposits in Phanerozoic metamorphic terrains result in the development of a distinctive alteration halo. Along with petrological changes such as the replacement of chlorite by carbonate and the growth of sericite, characteristic geochemical modifications take place within this alteration envelope. These include variations in elemental abundances and more or less pronounced shifts in the H, C, N, O, and S isotopic signature of the ore system. æFingerprintingÆ these isotopic trends can provide exploration with additional vectors towards the ore zone, and yields valuable information regarding the source of the hydrothermal fluids and the solutes contained therein. Data from radiogenic isotope systems such as Sr-Rb, Ar-Ar, Xe-Ra, Pb-Pb, Re-Os, Sm-Nd, and U-Pb can constrain the kinematic history of ore-hosting structures, provide important clues concerning the absolute timing of gold emplacement, and enable the detailed characterisation of associated intrusives with respect to their magma source(s) and crystallisation age. Although high analytical costs, long turn-around times and the potential for misinterpretation prevent isotope systems from offering a æquick & dirtyÆ analytical method that would provide a significant advantage in exploration for orogenic gold mineralisation, the development of integrated four-dimensional ore genesis models depends heavily on constraints obtained from isotope mass spectrometry.

Square Butte has no history of mineral development or production. Surface mapping, radiometric surveys and chemical analyses of rock samples reveal no mineral potential. The area has a speculative potential for petroleum and natural gas. INTRODUCTION The Square Butte Instant Wilderness Study Area, in Chouteau County, Montana, consists of 1,946 acres (788 ha) about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fort Benton and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Lewistown (fig. 1). This study was performed under provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is responsible for regional geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which determines the mineral potential of existing mines, prospects, or mineralized areas.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

El presente documento técnico tiene como objetivo mostrar las mejoras implementadas en la planta de cobre y molibdeno durante los primeros años de operación de Constancia, las cuales permitieron incrementar en forma sostenida los principales indicadores de producción. Se demuestra la optimización de cuatro principales indicadores: troughput, recuperación, disponibilidad y utilización. Los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento, que servirán como guía a nuevos proyectos mineros en construcción o en desarrollo, son el resultado de múltiples iniciativas de mejora y nuevas tecnologías implementadas principalmente en el año 2018.

This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines study on the hazards of large-scale conveyor belt fires in underground coal mines, as a function of both air velocity and distance from belt surface to gallery roof. The fire hazards considered were smoke obscuration, toxic effects of carbon monoxide (CO), and elevated air temperatures downstream of the fire. All of these hazards scale with the ratio of fire intensity to ventilation airflow. These hazards were all found to be greater at the lower belt-to-roof distance, owing to the greater fire intensities that resulted. The hazards of smoke obscuration and elevated CO levels were greater at lower air velocities. Smoke obscuration was found to be the earliest hazard, reaching critical levels before the stage of belt flame spread. Critical levels of CO and downstream air temperatures were not reached until the later stages of flame spread. Fire growth rates during rapid flame spread were much greater than rates measured during the early stages of belt burning. Data were analyzed to determine the early-warning capability of fire sensors. Smoke sensors provided the earliest warning, followed closely by CO sensors. Thermal sensors did not exhibit any early warning capability.
