Additive manufacturing (AM) brings disruptive changes over the ways parts and products are designed, tested, qualified, assembled, inspected and marketed. With these changes come real technical challenges, therefore, concerns that mainly stem from the maturity and diversity of today’s AM processes, the feedstock materials, and the interactions between the numerous process parameters. Additive manufacturing is somewhat similar to laser and electron-beam conduction-mode welding and involves a multitude of dynamic physical events between projected feedstock and moving heat source that influence process robustness, thus deposit properties. For this paper, a simple air vent, selected for its size, thin-wall, hollow geometry and materials (specifically 316L) was made using a laser-based powder blown technology (Construction Laser Additive Direct or CLAD) and systematically inspected by optical microscopy, microhardness indentations, and electron-back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). This exemplary part is first analyzed to broadly discuss metallurgical phenomena in additive manufacturing, particularly solidification and texture development. The paper then expands to other alloys and continues correlating metallurgical observations to process parameters and part properties, also borrowing from past experience with the same 3D printing CLAD system.

INTRODUCTION The wet shotcreting system utilizing steelfiber microsilica shotcrete with remote controlled equipment (The Robocon System) was developed in Norway 7-8 years ago. Norway was the natural origin for this system due to several factors. Almost 30% of all underground hydro-power stations in the world are located here. These projects created a need for high productivity shotcreting rigs for the rock support work in the caverns and in the connecting tunnels. During the period of 1976-1980, more than 1000 miles of tunnels were completed in Norway. Secondly, the utilization of microsilica in concrete was also developed in Norway due to a concentration of the world's ferroalloy p ants there. Robocon has presently placed approximately 110,000 m (150,000 cu. yds.) of this superior shotcrete, and has consequently an extensive experience in the shotcreting method. During a relatively short period of time (1975-1980), Robocon had a change from hand-operated, dry-process shotcrete to remote-controlled, wet-process shotcreting, because of improved productivity, reduced rebound, safer and cleaner working conditions. The introduction of microsilica and water-reducing admixture made it possible to produce wet-process shotcrete of high strength.

With the exception of the development of large scale mining equipment (haul trucks, draglines, shovels, etc.), there are likely few other candidates responsible for the ability to exploit large tonnage, low grade deposits, than the development of large capacity comminution equipment and circuits; crushers and grinding mills. Ball mills are often the final step in the comminution process and are responsible for providing what should be the optimum particle size distribution of ore to subsequent mineral concentration steps in the flowsheet. Because comminution processes are such high cost centers for milling operations, both capital and operating costs, an enormous amount of research has been conducted to study and model their performance, in order to improve efficiencies (Kelsall, et al., 1969; Austin et al., 1984; Napier-Munn, et al., 1999; Powell and Smit, 2001). With respect to modeling ball mills, estimates of the breakage rates for individual size classes of ore particles are fundamental, as are the particle size class breakage functions (the progeny of particle sizes produced from breaking a coarser particle size class), also termed appearance functions. Fundamental research into particle breakage in tumbling mills focuses on how much energy is input into single particles versus how they break and what size distribution of particles results. Several test methods, including JKMRC?s well known dual pendulum test and drop weight test, have been developed for the breakage of coarse particles down to 6 mm in size (Napier-Munn, et al., 1999). Work on the breakage of finer particles is still an area of intense research and single particle breakage is being investigated as are multiple particle, fixed bed methods (Hoffler and Herbst, 1990; Bourgeois et al., 1992; Whiten, 2007).

Radioisotope x-ray methods for the on-stream determination of copper, lead, and zinc in mineral product slurries were developed, and were successfully tested at the plant of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd.The tests were made in three stages. Measurements to determine the precision of analysis were made initially on briquettes of the mineral products. The effect of slurry solids content variations was then determined by measurements on the mineral products in a recirculating slurry loop. The radioisotope analyser was finally tested in a series of on-stream measurements in the plant.Copper, lead, and zinc in flotation feed and in copper concentrate were determined to a precision ranging between 1·4 and 15 per cent of the mean element concentration in the slurry solids. These precisions are within limits required for plant control purposes at Cobar.

India does not possess any soluble potash reserves and depends completely on imports. In this study, an attempt has been made to recover potash (K) values from the mica sample employing thermal and mechanical routes followed by leaching. Direct leaching of mica in different lixiviants is found to be ineffective with very low K-dissolution (1–5%). Heat treatment with different fluxes, such as NaCl, NaOH, and CaCl2, is carried out and almost 85% K-values are recovered. Mechanical activation of mica and with different calcium additives is carried out to recover potash values. K is recovered in leach solution in the form of soluble salts, such as K2CO3, K2SO4, and KOH, and leach residue consists mainly of calcium-alumino-silicates. Using mechanical activation with flux, it is possible to recover >95% K-values from mica sample. Mechanical activation with calcium-based flux is found sustainable in the recovery of K-values from mica.

Agnico-Eagle started sinking the Penna Shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1800 t/d from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success led to the installation of a hoisting plant capable of extracting 4500 t of ore and 1800 t of waste per day from a depth of 2210 m. The introduction of a new rope selection factor, permitting a safety factor of 4.0, represented the breakthrough required for a cost-effective project. This paper describes the process taken to introduce the new rope selection factor and its impact on the original plant.

In 2003, Independence Group NL purchased the Long Shaft Nickel Mine complex (Long) in Kambalda, Western Australia. Lightning Nickel, the nickel operating arm of Independence Group, faced considerable challenges operating the mine, with the most significant challenge being able to prove that the remnant ore at Long and the associated orebodies could be mined safely and efficiently. Given the seismic history at Long, the magnitude of these challenges could not be underestimated. In an effort to achieve 100 per cent extraction of the flatter orebodies, traditional methods such as room and pillar were dismissed. A method consisting of transverse sills, butting into each other was proposed. To stop fill material from the first sill rilling into the adjoining sill, it was proposed to backfill the sills with pumped cement fill. The capital cost of the fill plant was estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million and the cost for cement alone was $1.0 million per annum. Shotcrete was already an extremely useful tool in dealing with the widely variable stress environment, but was to be used in an innovative manner that would enable the full extraction of a tabular section of the Victor South orebody. A layer of shotcrete, approximately 100 mm thick, was to be sprayed on the up dip wall of the initial development sill. The sill was to be backfilled with ænormalÆ development waste and ætoppedÆ with sand backfill. The next sill, ie slightly up dip and alongside, was to be mined along the shotcrete boundary wall. With respect to wall stability, the premise was that the shotcrete wall would stay in place and prevent the backfill (development waste and sand) from rilling into the adjoining development. It was also proposed that any breaches of the shotcrete wall would be repaired using shotcrete before substantial inflow of backfill into the ænewÆ development. This paper describes the development and implementation of this mining method, as well as some of the associated financial aspects.

"Two shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index are compared for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. The first procedure is based on a batch milling test while the second procedure is based on a limited locked-cycle test. Both procedures were conducted using a standard Bond test mill. INTRODUCTION The Bond ball work index is widely used in the field of minerals processing as an indicator of ore grindability. The work index is determined by means of a locked-cycle test procedure that typically requires seven to eight cycles to stabilise at a re-circulating load of 250%. A typical test requires between three to four kilogram of ore sample and around eight hours of operator time. For geometallurgical test work applications, where a large number of variability samples are to be tested, it would be highly beneficial to use a test procedure that requires less sample mass and operator time. Certain test work laboratories, for example SGS and JK Tech, are already offering various types of shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index. This paper discusses a comparison of two shortened test procedures that were evaluated for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. EXPERIMENTAL Test Procedure 1 – Batch Milling The first test procedure is derived from a batch milling approach proposed by the University of Hacettepe (Aksani, 2000). Some modifications were, however, made to the data analysis method from that originally proposed. During this test procedure, a 700 mL volume of sample is milled in a standard Bond test mill for a pre-determined number of revolutions. The feed and product particle size distributions are measured for each test. These results are then used to back-calculate a cumulative breakage rate parameter (k) for each particle size, according to the following formula:"

The 73rd Street Tunnel Project is part of “The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan” (TARP)also known as the Deep Tunnel Project, and is located in the Village of Bedford Park, County of McCook, State of Illinois. The project consists of a ø 4.42 meter × 2,060 meter long (14´-6? bore, 6,760 foot)tunnel. The completed tunnel is used as a bypass tunnel for the McCook Cup Reservoir Project. The project was awarded to Affholder Inc. of St. Louis, in 2000. The paper describes the project in which a new, high-powered open gripper type main beam machine was used in which high advance rates have been achieved using conventional muck haulage techniques. Features of the project include the installation of rock support consisting of counter-sunk rock bolts that are required to be pull-tested for strength per project specifications. Installation and testing of the bolts are done during the boring cycle. Muck haulage was done by conventional muck car train and hoisting at the construction shaft. As the site layout did not include a tail tunnel, the trains needed to be shuttled at the shaft bottom. Even with the bolting requirements and the muck haulage without a tail tunnel, the Affholder site personnel still achieved high advance rates on the 73rd Street Project.

A new method for the design of longwall pillars, called "Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability" (ALPS), is described. The method is the final result of a research program that included two major field studies, extensive reanalysis of data from other in situ measurements, and detailed evaluations of available pillar design methods. The key problem addressed by ALPS is estimation of the abutment loads applied to longwall pillars. Based on underground stress measurements made in mines in three states, equations for predicting the magnitude, distribution, and time-of-arrival of abutment loads are proposed. Stress measurements are also used to evaluate empirical pillar strength formulas for use in longwall pillar design. ALPS has been verified by application to case histories from several mining areas, and examples taken from the Pittsburgh and the Blue Creek seams are presented. Step-by-step guidelines for using this design method are also given.

Feed slurries are typically flocculated in a thickenerÆs feedwell to increase the settling rate, underflow density and overflow clarity. High molecular weight polymeric flocculants are normally used, but present a number of challenges in terms of make up, dilution, delivery and mixing with the feed slurry.Various aspects of the flocculant dilution and delivery system have been studied with a combination of flow visualisation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An open topped flocculant dilution/mixing box has been developed to replace a conventional flocculant manifold, with improvements to the mixing, fault diagnosis and ease of determining the flow split to the various dosing points. The addition points to the feedwell have also been studied, both in terms of where the flocculant is added, and how. While conventional multi-hole spargers are effective in dispersing flocculant, they are prone to blocking and have been replaced by open-ended pipes. The required dispersion is provided by an efficient mixing element placed in the dilution port. Adding the flocculant into the feedwell dilution stream prior to mixing with the slurry also provides super-dilution of the flocculant that can further improve the flocculation process and reduce flocculant consumption.CITATION:Heath, A R and Arbuthnot, I, 2013. Pillar recovery continues to be one of the more hazardous activities in underground coal mining. Safety requires that the roof above the intersection remain stable until after the pillar has been extracted. Artificial supports (timbers and Mobile Roof Supports) arc essential to roof stability, but so is the final remnant stump or pushout. Traditional mining practices usually called for the complete extraction of the final stump, but the recent trend (both in the U.S. and internationally) seems to be towards mining plans that leave a remnant stump. For this study, a sample of roof control plans from the Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) Coal Districts were analyzed to determine current pillar recovery practices. Both full- and partial- extraction plans were included. Special attention was paid to whether plans require that a final stump be left, and whether requirements regarding the dimensions of the remnant stump are included. Foreign experience with final stumps is also summarized. It seems that the risk of major pillar falls can often be reduced by leaving final stumps that are large enough to protect the intersection, but small enough that they do not inhibit the caving of the gob. Because final stumps are often irregular in shape, a new approach for estimating their strength is described. Analyses were conducted to assess the effect of seam height and depth of cover on the potential variation in the size of remnant stumps.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated long-wall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every 1.5 m [5 fl] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 MA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. This paper will explore the perceived benefits and disbenefit of including the project Risk Register with bid documents; format and content that should be transferred and lessons learned using the case history of bidding and early construction phase of the Bi-County Water Tunnel in Montgomery County, MD

A new monitoring device called SAFEBOLT (Stress And Force Evaluator in BOLTs) has been recently developed at McGill University. The device is essentially an alternative to the load cell, it permits the monitoring of bolt axial load in the field. The SAFEBOLT system consists of a portable readout unit, a connecting cable and the SAFEBOLT device, which is installed in the bolt head. The new device can be installed on any industry standard rockbolt or rebar. The device is completely encapsulated in the bolt head, which makes it resistant to corrosion, rugged, and free of any electric wires. Pilot tests at two underground Quebec mines were carried out and helped improve the initial design of the device head.

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country's diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia's economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. "DEFINITION OF VISCOSITYViscosity has been defined as the resistance experienced by one portion of a liquid moving over another portion, such as one molecular plane moving over an adjacent plane. A measure of viscosity is the force required to keep one plane in motion at Unit velocity, the other plane being considered stationary. Figure 1 illustrates the general idea that the surface friction between two adjacent areas will be greater the larger the molecules. Therefore it may be assumed that viscosity will be increased by molecular association or agglomeration, and likewise dissociation rill decrease viscosity. According to Maxwell (1)6 the unit of viscosity, the poise, is the tangential force per square centimeter of area of either of two horizontal planes 1 centimeter apart, one of which is fixed while the other moves with unit velocity, the space between being filled with viscous liquid of unit viscosity.The need for a satisfactory apparatus and experimental procedure for the determination of viscosity of high-melting materials at temperatures corresponding to those in pig-iron and steel making has been recognized during the past few decades. The condition of the slag during the smelting and refining periods in the iron- and steel-making processes exerts an important influence on the metal product obtained, this slag condition really meaning the state of viscosity or, vice versa, fluidity, which the slag attains under certain conditions."

The performance characteristics of five hydrocyclone coal washers were evaluated to determine the sharpness and efficiency of separation that might be anticipated in commercial operation. The hydrocyclone overflows contained generally good clean coal products that would require little re-treating to remove misplaced high-gravity material. The underflows, however, contained from 63.6 to 36.7 percent of misplaced low-gravity material, which would require secondary cleaning to provide acceptable clean coal yields.
