Recently, there has been much debate as to the relevance of reporting financial results using the conventional accounting systems, which is based on historical costs, during a period of rapid inflation. In the following paragraphs , the symptoms, if not the causes, of inflation, its detrimental effect on the financial soundness of business in general and the financial reporting changes being advocated to overcome perceived weaknesses in the present financial reporting system in accounting for the effects of inflation will be reviewed. Finally, a course of action as a sound approach to the financial reporting problem will be recommended.

O lingotamento contínuo de tarugos é um processo extremamente complexo dependente de uma série de variáveis. Todas essas influenciam diretamente na qualidade do aço lingotado e na produtividade, quase sempre de maneira conflituosa. Para compreender o efeito dos parâmetros de processo, é necessário conhecê-los melhor e avaliar sua influência naquilo que é a base do lingotamento contínuo: a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Neste estudo foram levantados dados de temperatura durante o lingotamento de diversas corridas de aços em uma planta de aços longos especiais. As medidas de temperatura das paredes do molde da máquina LC foram obtidas, utilizando-se termopares estrategicamente posicionados ao longo do comprimento do molde e nas suas faces. Através da obtenção dos valores de temperatura desses termopares e do levantamento dos dados de processo de cada corrida monitorada, foi possível correlacionar o efeito da composição química com a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Por fim, os resultados mostram que aumentando o carbono equivalente observa-se um aumento na transferência de calor.

Desenvolvimentos recentes no emprego de ligas NiTi superelásticas (SE) na confecção de instrumentos endodônticos rotatórios envolvem a aplicação de tratamentos térmicos nos instrumentos inicialmente produzidos a partir de ligas SE. Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito de tratamentos térmicos e sua contribuição para a evolução das propriedades funcionais de um fio de NiTi SE. Os fios comerciais de NiTi, aproximadamente equiatômicos, foram ensaiados após o tratamento de recozimento por 1 hora, em temperaturas de 300°C a 500°C, e então temperados em água. A caracterização física do material foi realizada por calorimetria exploratória diferencial e as propriedades mecânicas foram obtidas em ensaios de tração e de recuperação de forma. Os resultados apontaram aumento nas temperaturas de transformação dos fios com o recozimento, o aparecimento da dupla transformação austenita - fase R - martensita B19’ durante o resfriamento. Observou-se também diminuição do módulo de elasticidade aparente e aumento da deformação residual com o aumento da temperatura de recozimento, indicando, em concordância com a variação nas temperaturas de transformação, que o material passou a apresentar o efeito memória de forma.

This paper explores the interpretation and application of Particle Size Distribution (PSD) curves in optimizing blast design and enhancing downstream operations. The study looks at important factors like D50, D80, fines content, and the uniformity index to show how PSD curves affect the efficiency of different mining processes. The first section of this paper discusses the impact of blast design parameters such as burden, spacing, and explosive energy on the resulting PSD, highlighting their significance for downstream operations like crushing, and material handling. The section concluded that proper alignment of PSD with downstream size classes, like primary crusher inlet sizes, among others, can result in substantial cost reductions and productivity gains. The second part presents a case study from dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal, utilizing fragmentation analysis to evaluate blast performance and promote continuous improvement. The section specifically examines the effect of stemming material size on blast fragmentation, comparing the impact of using aggregate with a D80 of 12.32 mm versus a D80 of 21.94 mm. The D80 value represents the particle size at which 80% of the stemming material is smaller, making it a critical parameter in evaluating the stemming's effectiveness in confining explosive energy. The drilling and blasting designs were meticulously planned using O-PitDev and O-PitSurface software to ensure accuracy in blast parameters and layout. To assess the fragmentation resulting from these different stemming material sizes, the study utilized WipFrag 4 software. The software allowed for precise measurement of particle size distribution after the blast, as well as a detailed comparison between the two stemming sizes. Results from the analysis indicate that using bigger-sized stemming material led to improved blast confinement, which in turn resulted in better fragmentation compared to the smaller-sized material. The reviewed blast videos demonstrate that the larger aggregate effectively contained the explosive energy within the borehole, thereby reducing premature venting and directing more energy towards breaking the surrounding rock mass. This led to finer fragmentation with D80 = 1240.1 mm, D50 = 685.9, and Dmax = 2580 mm, which is advantageous in downstream operations like crushing and milling. On the other hand, the smaller stemming material (D80 = 21.94 mm) did not confine the explosive energy as efficiently, resulting in coarser fragmentation (D80 = 1327.37 mm, D50 = 750.76, and Dmax = 2370 mm) and reduced overall blast efficiency. These findings highlight the significant influence of stemming material size on blast performance and fragmentation outcomes.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a influência do Nióbio na trabalhabilidade a quente de um aço inoxidável duplex do tipo UNS S32304 em condições similares às do processamento industrial, utilizando ensaios de torção a quente. Foram fundidas, em forno de indução a vácuo, 4 corridas experimentais: uma com a composição química padrão e as outras objetivando-se teores de Nióbio de 0,2%, 0,4% e 0,8%. Ensaios de torção a quente foram realizados em resfriamento contínuo a partir de 1.200ºC, e ensaios isotérmicos no intervalo de temperaturas de 1.200 a 900ºC. O aumento da fração volumétrica de ferrita em função do aumento da concentração de Nióbio melhorou a trabalhabilidade a quente destas ligas.

O coque fica exposto a diferentes solicitações mecânicas do tipo impacto, abrasão e compressão, desde o desenfornamento até o seu consumo no Alto-Forno. Para evitar que o coque sofra uma acentuada degradação, é exigido que o mesmo apresente uma elevada resistência mecânica a frio. Para monitorar tal parâmetro, utiliza-se principalmente o teste de tambor, porém este contempla apenas a degradação por impacto e abrasão. Neste contexto, este trabalho desenvolveu uma metodologia para avaliar a resistência mecânica à compressão, inicialmente em partículas individuais de coque, apontando quais seriam as granulometrias mais resistentes. Os coques foram transformados em corpos de provas e testados em máquina de ensaio universal. Os resultados apontam que a tensão média de ruptura cresce com o aumento da granulometria. Posteriormente, foi avaliado a resistência mecânica à compressão em leito de coque, onde foi possível simular em uma prensa hidráulica, a pressão que a coluna das cargas exerce sobre o leito de coque no Alto-Forno e, posteriormente, correlacionou a compressão com o teste de tambor e se obteve excelentes resultados.

THE bases of the work by the committee whereof I am chairman were (1) the abolition of extra-lateral rights and (2) the preservation of the maximum of the existing laws. The matter of extra-lateral rights had been under prolonged discussion among mining men and up to the time when our com-mittee began its work (in 1917) the expression of opinion in every way whereby it could be made known -and those ways were extensive-was only a little short of being unanimous that extralateral rights ought to be abolished. I have not observed important evidence indicating a change of opinion on the subject since 1917. ABOLITION OF DISCOVERY LOGICAL Now, when it be decided that extralateral rights ought to be abolished, there can not be merely a simple change to that effect, but it is found that consequential changes are necessary all the way through the existing laws. Abolition of extralateral rights implies abolition of discovery as a prerequisite to location, for otherwise there would be no legal means for locating claims on the dip of a vein. Quite apart from this consideration, abolition of discovery as a prerequisite to location is supported by other good reasons. Among these are the occurrence of orebodies with no exposure on the surface and which often are hidden at great depth. A prospector who has reason to suspect the occurrence of such an orebody must have legal means for the location of a claim within which to explore, and obviously he may. not be able to make any discovery on the surface sufficient to locate and hold legally such a claim under the terms of the law as it stands at present. As a matter of fact, discovery as a prerequisite to location was abolished by common consent many years ago, not only for the reasons that I have given here-inbefore but also for others. It is highly desirable to revise the mining law in this respect, so that it will conform to the conditions of practice and not require people to perjure themselves in making locations, even if it be for praiseworthy purposes.

Geralmente essa influência é conflituosa. É necessário conhecer melhor os parâmetros de processo para compreender seus efeitos naquilo que é a base do lingotamento contínuo: a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Foram levantados dados de temperatura durante o lingotamento de diversas corridas de aços em uma planta de aços longos especiais. As medidas de temperatura das paredes do molde da máquina LC foram obtidas, utilizando-se termopares estrategicamente posicionados ao longo do comprimento do molde e nas suas faces. Através da obtenção dos valores de temperatura desses termopares e do levantamento dos dados de processo de cada corrida monitorada, foi possível correlacionar a influência da velocidade com a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Por fim, os resultados mostram que o aumento da velocidade de lingotamento gera um aumento na transferência de calor.

Esse trabalho experimental apresenta os resultados preliminares da lixiviação de placas de circuito eletrônico de microcomputadores sucatados visando a extração de cobre, além da recuperação daquelas espécies através de precipitação por neutralização do licor de lixiviação. As placas foram desmontadas, fragmentadas em pedaços menores, onde passaram por uma incineração no forno mufla, moídas por moagem manual, onde depois sofreram ataque com ácido clorídrico e ácido sulfúrico. Também houve o processo de eletrodeposição com as laminas de cobre encontradas na moagem manual, onde apresentou 14% de cobre depositado.

THE paper on "Cross-cuts in Coal Mining," by J. J. Rutledge (published in MINING AND METAL-LURGY, February, 1927, p. 64) was brought up for discussion at the annual meeting, where the follow-ing comments were made T. D. Thomas (Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., Lansford, Pa.) : This question has caused me a lot of worry, not in the particular district in which I am, but throughout other districts. There are always several angles to consider. If you are in a hurry to push development work, you might increase the distance between cross-cuts from 60 to 350 ft., but if you have a 40-ft. chain pillar every 60 ft. it will cut down your entry driving a whole lot. Looking at it from the ventilation angle, I agree that too many cross-cuts in entries are bad things. You have a tremendous amount of leakage, and I have seen currents starting out with 45,000 cu. ft., and after passing about 30 or 40 cross-cuts the current has dwindled down to about 18,000 or 15;000 cu. ft. The result is that the question of putting in auxiliary fans is raised. That involves several points into which I do not want to go too far, but I am in favor of not getting in too many cross-cuts, putting them in only where they are necessary: I think the state mining laws are wrong in a number of places on that, and that when you finish with a cross-cut it should be in the room. It should be well sealed on an entry. There are several ways of tightening up the cross-cuts so as not to have the great amount of leakage and wastage of: air that we now have. 'I prefer tile stopping; other people prefer cement or brick, but there is a big fac-tor to all mines, saving the mine. I checked up on the number of fans in the anthracite region and found there are 651. That was derived from the state report of 1921, and it enabled me to compute from the power the weight of the air. In the anthracite region of Pennsylvania we put in 9 tons of air to every ton of coal we get out. Tracing that back again and taking the Government's figures which they made some time ago, I found but 20 per cent of the air got to the faces where it was actually needed. That is a tremendous big loss and shows a possibility for saving, money for the various coal companies. Chairman Rice: I think what Mr. Thomas refers to was an investigation by R. Y. Williams, of the Bureau of Mines in Illinois, where a study was made of 100 typical mines, and, speaking off-hand, my recollection is that we found as little as 15 per cent of air reached the faces in one of the mines and another was as much as 50. That seems to be a reflection on the type of stoppings and general ventilation scheme.

"The extremely low permeability of the water-carrying beds in the nevonian formation of the potash district of Saskatchewan does not permit the injection of cement or chemicals to seal off sufficient water from the shafts to guarantee the safety of the mine. Based on many years of experience with wet shafts in the German and French potash mining industry, Alwinsal Potash of Canada Ltd. decided to have their potash mine shaft near Lanigan, Sask., which was completed in September of 1967, lined by means of an absolutely watertight lining of combined concrete and steel-plate construction.This shaft lining, consisting of two steel shells of welded construction with concrete filled in between, has proved itself before in the German coal mining industry. It guarantees a permanently dry shaft. With this type of lining, time-robbing and very often abortive injections are superfluous and the regular repair and adjusting work as well as the corrosion of conveyances and ropes can be avoided. Above all, however, the danger of a water inrush into the shaft is abolished completely."

In the present study, the heat balance of the Hirakud smelter aluminium reduction cell has been accurately assessed using only a surface thermocouple and a pyrometer, As it is well known that using a single linear or quadratic relationship to estimate the heat flux from the measured surface temperature does not provide the accuracy required to close the cell heat balance, this approach was not used in this study, Instead, the fundamental natural convection and radiation heat flux equations were used systematically for each measurement point, Practically, this means that the ambient air temperature and at least one ambient radiative temperature must also be known in addition to the surface temperature for each measurement point. Sometimes, the radiative heat flux could not be accurately estimated using a single ambient radiative temperature, In those cases, a more accurate estimation based on two ambient radiative temperatures and corresponding view factors has been used instead, It turns out that although at least three temperature measurements are required to estimate a single heat flux, it takes a lot less time to make those temperature measurements using a pyrometer than directly measuring the heat flux using an expensive heat flux meter, Furthermore, no loss in accuracy was detected when using this approach as the cell heat balance could be closed within 5%, the level of accuracy typical of cell heat balance assessment using heat flux meter.

Best practice standards generally recommend assessment of the environmental and societal risks posed by tailings storage facilities, but they rarely specify how the analysis should be made. As a case study, this paper describes a safety assessment of the Zelazny Most tailings pond operated by the Hydrotechnical Unit of KGHM Polska Miedz SA in Poland. The complete assessment includes a failure mode effect criticality analysis (FMECA) that considers all conceivable failure modes, but this paper focuses on one key mode, the loss of stability during the planned raising of the crest above its current level. Reliability against static dam failure considers uncertainty on the safety factor in a limit equilibrium approach. The threat of dynamic (earthquake induced) instability is assessed by developing a model of future seismicity as a function of the mining plan and considering uncertainty on the induced permanent displacements along critical sliding surfaces. We quantify the additional level of protection against outflow provided by the beach using an event tree with expert-assigned probabilities. Continuous monitoring of the dam for premonitory signs of instability and a set of loss-prevention plans in the case of a spill provide additional layers of protection; their effectiveness is quantified by estimating the fraction of the population that could be evacuated as a function of warning time. The probabilistic analysis indicates that the safety targets are met and produces practical recommendations on how to maintain and improve the safety level while the dam crest is raised above its current level.CITATION:Van Dyck, J, Pytel, W, Veneziano, D, Snow, R and Zanoli, O, 2015. "A method and device are described for sampling diamond-drill core by cutting a continuous fillet of constant cross section from the cylindrical surface of the core throughout appropriate sample lengths. The apparatus employs a tapered, abrasive-set, cutting wheel, the conical cutting surface of which projects slightly into a rectangular core-guiding trough set parallel to the axis of rotation. The depth of fillet and thus the amount of sample per unit length can be regulated by adjusting the core guides. The freshly cut fillet itself, by engaging in a guide beyond the cutting wheel, acts to prevent rotation of the core during operation of the device.The cuttings which form the sample are normally collected in a tray below the cutting-wheel and appear at about 80 per cent -100 mesh. They require little or no further treatment or comminution before analysis. INITIAL PRECONDITIONS To solve tile problem of using the potential reserves of the different coal ranks efficiently (the coal reserves being many times superior in quantity to those of natural gas and oil) one must realise an integrated estimation of the coalfields' and coal deposits' reserves. The actuality of this problem increased especially in the recent years, when the Russian coal industry is being restructured. A structural reorgaisation of this industry, in order to in- crease its efficiency, covers a large spectrum of social and economic problems, comprising a withdrawal from mining the coal reserves that are unsafe from the standpoint of economy and labour protection. According to the information supplied by the 'Rossoogol' company, the Russian coal industry, accounting for abut a fifth of the world coal reserves, has a rather unsafe resource base, for about 5% of the reserves involved in mining do not correspond to the world practice conditions, regarding the coal grade, thickness, geological conditions, proneness to coal and gas outburst hazards. These concern first of all the Moscow, Kizelovsk and Donetsk coal basins, the Prokopievsk-Kiselevsk district of the Kuzbas basin and several other coalfields. Thus, the problem of efficient potential coal reserves' utilization calls for a paramount solution of two basic problems, namely: a) a comparative coalfields' and sections evaluation, and their ranging, in accordance with their industrial importance; b) choosing the 'active' reserves good to be efficiently mined under the present-day conditions. PRINCIPLES OF EVALUATION The investigations that had been carried out make it possible to formulate the following basic principles of the coalfields' reserves' estimation (or assessment). 1. The necessity, possibility and expediency of coal reserves' industrial exploitation are determined by a set of natural, technical, technological, practical, economic, environmental and social factors, thus calling for an integrated and gradual approach to problem solving. 2. One cannot consider the results of same reserves' estimation as being invariable because the former depend both upon constant (mainly natural) and market demands for different grades of coal (those of different power engineering and technological situations), capital investments, material and labour resources, economic (price-forming), technical, technological, environmental and other factors. 3. The rational size and sequence of the operating mines' and reserve sections' resources' involvement into mining depend upon the final aim of posing the problem, whose variants may be (the corresponding limitations being considered) providing for a maximum run-of-mine output (these essentially featuring the past stages of the industry's evolution); providing for a maximum efficiency, measured possibly by the specific or absolute indices of profits an expenses, labour productivity e. al. ; providing for a maximum extraction (maximum integrate utilization) of the known reserves. In this case an important park goes to the economic evaluation (or assessment) of useful application of the by-products being extracted (methane, mine water, rack) compared to the expenses necessary for their utilization. Regarding the steam coal (posing the problem any way it be possible), and extreme limit to the absolute non-efficiency of the coal reserves' exploitation may be posed, using the proportion of energy obtained from the possible amount of the coal to be extracted to the energy consumption necessary to extract, prepare, haul and consume this amount of coal. 4. The most reliable and efficient solutions providing for opening the reserves can be obtained for group of mines, rather than at the level of an individual mine section or an individual mine because it is only in the former case that the possibilities to re- distribute the expenses necessary to develop the good for mining and worse sections and seams can be realized to the greatest extent. Therefore the prospective approach to be considered is the one providing for an integrated organization and choice of the optimum combination of the variants of the ways to use the mines in operation and the free sections of the region in order to satisfy the growing up requirements for coal rather than the one providing for individual mine sections' resources' evaluation. 5. The future possibility and expediency of coal reserves' industrial exploitation will depend upon the prospects to implant at the mines in operation and reserve sections new engineering and technological elements and coal extraction technologies which may essentially change the actual idea concerning the coal reserves worth of being developed in an efficient way. For example, reserves not available to be exploited using conventional coal extraction technology may be regarded as potential resources for in situ gasification, e. g. the operating mines' reserves (non-commercial and non-mined commercial ones), balance and outside balance reserves of the free sections having proved not available to be mined using conventional coal-extraction technologies, as well as the non-extracted reserves of the abandoned and closed mines.

Type and shape of large dams founded on rock depend upon the expected deformation of their foundation. Their design consequently requires the assessment of the deformability of the rock mass at large scale. Seismic refraction, laboratory tests on rock samples and empirical formulas can provide an order of magnitude of the deformation modulus, with a limited degree of reliability. Direct in-situ measurement of the deformability of a volume of rock is therefore preferred, which integrate the effect of discontinuities, such as plate loading tests, dilatometric tests, etc. The authors have been compiling results obtained by in-situ deformability tests on a number of dam sites, including the Scarabée (“Petite Sismique”) method. This last method consists in thoroughly analysing the shape of seismic wave forms transmitted through the rock mass. It has been used since now more than 40 years over a large number of dam foundations, and has proved to provide a satisfactory assessment of the static deformation modulus. After comparing the results obtained from different methods on six dam sites, the Authors conclude that their reliability closely depends upon the size of the loading device in relation to the spacing of the discontinuities. Attempts to correlate results from different types of in-situ loading tests reveal difficult, because closely depending upon local geotechnical conditions at test location. Plate jacking tests appear to be the most reliable, because involving a relatively large volume of rock. On the other hand, the Scarabée method (“Petite Sismique”) allows a rapid assessment of the deformation characteristics of the rock mass at large scale, and has been found to provide values generally in agreement with those from plate loading tests, while dilatometric or flat-jack tests were found too dependent upon local conditions. The Authors conclude that preference should be given first to the Scarabée method, which uses light equipment and is quickly performed, together with an accurate geological and geotechnical assessment for interpretation. In a second stage, Scarabée shall be complemented by adequately performed plate jacking tests in selected locations, in order to cross-check results and refine the assessment. The general accordance between the results of the two methods, which both can integrate anisotropy of rock masses, justifies this statement.

"The PFK FeNi Smelter was re-commissioned by Solway Resources in 2002, ending a long period of economic decline in the adjacent town. In 2009 Hatch was retained to design, supply and install a custom furnace crucible that would accommodate a capacity increase from 34 MW to 40 MW and increase campaign life through binding and cooling technologies, as part of ongoing improvement efforts. The involvement of PFK personnel was critical to the successful integration of the new furnace technology with the existing process and operational practice. The furnace upgrade project was completed in 18 months during 2010 – 2011. Since start-up, the furnace has exceeded production expectations, operating successfully at 42 MW.INTRODUCTIONAfter ceasing operations in the 1990’s, the Pobuzhsky Ferronickel Combine (PFK), located in central Ukraine, was stripped of useful equipment and deteriorated while dormant. The surrounding town experienced a period of economic decline throughout the 1990’s. Solway Industries purchased the complex in 2002 and began a systematic incremental program to re-commission the smelter using both local expertise and specialists from other parts of the former Soviet Union. This led to the re-birth of PFK as a successful toll-smelting complex, and a renaissance for the surrounding economy.As part of the continuing improvement program, PFK approached Hatch in 2009 to study the possibility of a capacity expansion from 34 MW to 40 MW. It was decided, based on the results of the study, to design and install a custom furnace crucible integrating the unique PFK FeNi process with modern Hatch furnace technology. This novel approach had many benefits, including: maximum re-use of existing furnace components (off-gas, feed equipment and transformers), minimal impact on upstream and downstream equipment and building structure, and the retention of a familiar operating regime. The latter was a key factor in the success of the project, as it allowed the extensive operating expertise of the PFK staff to remain highly relevant to the upgraded furnace. This led to minimized capital investment, a rapid start-up and no significant operational challenges switching over to the new equipment incorporating Hatch furnace technology."

The operations management system at Olympic Dam has evolved over a two-year period to the state described in this paper. This evolution has been driven largely by the requirements of the recent expansion of the Olympic Dam operation from three to nine million tonnes of ore per year. Such a change process demands an holistic approach to mine management and several techniques have been employed including XPAC, Mine Works Planner as well as a basic philosophy of æjust-in-timeÆ completion. The philosophies, software and tracking mechanisms for managing a large tonnage operation are described, outlining a fully integrated scheduling system from shift to shift detailed activity planning to a 20 year production plan. Moreover, the vision of production exceeding the current limit of nine million tonnes means that there are to be further developments to this state-of-the-art system in use at the Olympic Dam mine.

São apresentados e discutidos os resultados de estudos de pesquisa para o desenvolvimento de prática para reciclagem de sucata refratária na Usiminas. O processo contempla a obtenção de agregados a partir do beneficiamento, por meio de britagem e classificação granulométrica, de tijolos de carro torpedo e placa gaveta após utilização industrial. Os agregados reciclados são adicionados em concretos refratários de alto desempenho. Os resultados de testes laboratoriais indicaram que os agregados podem ser incorporados com sucesso a concretos para canal de corrida. Essa prática tem sido amplamente utilizada para otimizar a manutenção e melhorar o desempenho ambiental.
