The An Shan iron ore deposit is the biggest low-grade oxidised iron deposit in China. Over the past ten years, about 120 SLon verticalring-pulsating high gradient magnetic separators units have been installed in An Shan to process oxidised iron ore. This paper describes how several plants have upgraded their old technologies to new technologies with SLon magnetic separators as the key equipment for controlling tails grades, including using reverse flotation as the key technology for iron concentrate cleaning, These plants have been modernised with beneficial results at low cost.

A broad spectrum of tantalum containing input materials can be processed for the production of synthetic tantalum concentrate (“SynCon”). The use of these low grade substances offers a secure alternative to mining of coltan in Central Africa. SynCon is produced in a multi-stage pyrometallurgical process, wherefore the melting behaviour of slags presents an important factor especially regarding the energy consumption and its optimisation. The characteristics of a slag comprising mostly Al2O3, CaO, SiO2 and MgO are influenced by the amount of other oxidic constituents which enfolds the main focus of this study. A hot stage microscope serves for the investigation of the slag behaviour in a temperature range from 1000 to 1600 °C under reducing atmosphere (CO/CO2 gas). The experimental results are compared with thermodynamic calculations (FactSage) to get a better understanding of the process.

The results of full-scale tests on precast segment made at University of Roma are presented. The segments were cast using fibre-reinforced concrete produced without any traditional reinforcement, by using fiber made in high-strength steel and a new type of anchorage.Bending tests were performed in order to check the bearing capacity of the segments under the flexural actions; these occur during de-moulding, handling, storage phases as well as in the in situ condition (due to asymmetric soil pressure). Furthermore, point load tests simulating the TBM thrust were performed, in order to study the construction phase (excavation).The results show that the segment response largely respects the material testing and design advice according to the Fib Model Code 2010. Next to the paper industry, the steel industry is a major user of water. Without an adequate and reliable source of “good” water, steel cannot be produced. The use of water has a direct impact on steel quality and on our environment. Used improperly, water can also add unnecessary costs. Used properly, water can maintain and improve steel quality, enhance our environment and control or reduce the “total cost of operation”. Water needs to be more than just “wet and not lumpy”. Water quality needs to be based on the end use. This paper discusses ways to manage many of the water systems. With little or no capital investment it is possible to develop operating practices that protect your initial investment, ensure that the water systems do not have a negative impact on quality or your production costs and also minimize your chance of having an environmental incident.

A computer model was developed to calculate the fragmentation cost for in situ leaching operations as a function of the blast design and deposit parameters. The model is based on blasting an ore zone only or an ore zone plus overburden by either a coyote blast or a vertical blasthole system. The model calculates the blast design parameters and the fragmentation cost based either on a user input powder factor value or on a powder factor calculated by the model as a function of the overburden height and the ore zone thickness. Examples of blast design parameters calculated by the model are the number and spacing of blastholes for a vertical blasthole system and the number and spacing of crosscuts for a coyote system. The model also calculates the total amount of explosives, the detonating cord length, and the number of primers. The cost of blasthole drilling can be calculated by the model based either on purchasing and operating a drill or on a user input value of the contracted cost of drilling. Application of the model to an example ore deposit showed that the vertical blasthole systems were more economical than the coyote system when there was no overburden and the deposit had an average ore thickness less than 45 meters. With no overburden and ore thickness greater than 45 meters, the vertical blasthole system was either more or less expensive than the coyote system depending on the number of levels used in the coyote system. With overburden, the coyote system was less expensive than the vertical blasthole system for blasting either the ore only or the ore plus the overburden. A coyote blast will usually produce larger particle sizes than a vertical blasthole system. Larger particle sizes can result in lower copper recoveries so that a less expensive coyote blast may not improve the overall economics of an in situ leaching operation. Blasting the ore zone only was generally less expensive than blasting the ore plus the overburden by either blasting system. Also, for the example considered, the coyote system costs were less sensitive to changes in overburden thickness and powder factor while the vertical blasthole system costs were less sensitive to changes in ore thickness.

During industrial electrowinning of copper, uneven growth can impact current efficiency, cause short-circuits in the cell and negatively impact the final quality of the metal product. Copper electrodeposits can be made smoother by incorporating a host of additives in the electrolyte but uneven copper growth may still occur due to variations in electrolyte composition throughout the cell-house. To quantify roughness, 3D images of the surface may be combined with scaling analysis to gain further insight into the deposit structure. Moreover, scaling analysis may offer a method to predict long-term deposit structure using short-term copper deposits. In this paper, the application of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and scaling analysis are used to monitor copper growth and extract surface roughness characteristics. The cathode was a 304 stainless steel disc that was polished to a mirror finish. Copper was deposited onto this surface over a range of 10, 20 and 30 minutes from an acidic sulfate solution (40 g/L Cu) at 40oC from an electrolyte that contained or was free of guar. AFM images were acquired to obtain 3D topographical information on the samples and scaling analysis was performed to extract the root-mean-squared (rms) roughness, periodicity (grain size), aspect ratio of surface features and growth mechanism. INTRODUCTION During the process of copper electrowinning, the dissolved metal ions are reduced and thereby deposited onto a cathode substrate which is later recovered by stripping the metal from the cathode surface. Although this process is widely used in the industry, the conditions of the deposition procedure may cause the growth of the metal product to be uneven which can not only impact the current efficiency and final copper product quality but may also lead to plant interruptions through short-circuits if the anode and cathode make contact. To create more uniform copper deposits, a host of additives may be included in the electrolyte which may act as brighteners, leveling agents and inhibitors which may include guar gum, glue, thiourea or polysaccharides or polyacrylamides and their industrial use has changed over time (Moats, Luyima, & Cui, 2015). As such, the electrolyte composition is often complex and subtle variations in the solution matrix throughout the cell-house may impact the surface morphology of the final copper product. In an effort to quantify the roughness of copper samples, image analysis is often applied and may include Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or Atomic Force Microscopy characterization. While both are appropriate, AFM offers 3-dimensional information which may be used to both qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the surface characteristics.

indústria de móveis gera cerca de 19.255.000 m³/ano de resíduos de madeira com potencial para reciclagem de materiais. Este projeto tem com o objetivo minimizar a destinação final de resíduos de Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) através do desenvolvimento de um novo laminado de MDF reprocessado. Para tanto fez-se a coleta de MDF cru produzidos por corte a laser, em seguida o material foi triturado em moinho de facas e quarteado. O resíduo de MDF triturado foi misturado com resina poliéster nas proporções de 1 para 3 de resina poliéster em peso. A partir da formulação foi feito um laminado de 3 a 4 mm de espessura, onde também foi desenvolvido corpos de prova para a realização de ensaios mecânicos, tais como ensaio de tração, flexão e impacto, para determinação das propriedades do novo laminado. Os resultados esperados são a identificação das proporções ideais entre resina e MDF triturado e a resistência a impacto, tração e flexão determinadas pelos ensaios mecânicos.

O projeto Minas-Rio iniciou as suas operações no final de 2014 e se encontra na fase de ramp-up buscando a capacidade nominal. O circuito de cominuição inclui três prensas de rolos em circuito aberto com o objetivo de criar micro fissuras no minério e assim reduzir o consumo energético da etapa seguinte, o circuito de moagem de bolas. Este tipo de fluxograma, com prensa de rolos (circuito aberto) seguido de moagem de bolas (circuito fechado), é conhecido como circuito híbrido. A literatura apresenta este circuito híbrido como o de maior eficiência energética. A maior preocupação com relação as prensas de rolos aplicada aos minérios de ferro é a geração excessiva de finos que poderiam elevar o perda de material na etapa de deslamagem, anterior a etapa de concentração por flotação. Os resultados obtidos através de amostragem das prensas mostraram que não houve geração excessiva de finos. Neste trabalho são apresentados os resultados iniciais da operação das prensas de rolos.

The electrochemistry of coal pyrite is relevant to coal desulfurization by chemical or bacterial leaching, flotation and oil agglomeration. The electrochemical behavior of polished and etched Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh coal pyrite samples was investigated from pH 1.0 to 10.5. The open-circuit potentials decreased with increasing pH, as expected, but were well above the thermodynamic stability region of pyrite, and decreased with time. Cyclic voltammetry revealed behavior highly sensitive to pH and scan rate (2.0 and 20.0 mV/s). The behavior on the first cycle was always substantially different from that on subsequent cycles. The anodic and cathodic reactions were correlated with the Eh-pH diagram for the Fe-S-H20 system to identify the reactions occurring at different pH values. There was also evidence that the buffers used to maintain basic pH values are themselves electrochemically active, which should be considered in interpreting many earlier electrochemical studies of sulfide minerals.

Barras trefiladas podem não apresentar o perfil desejado pelos seus fabricantes após o processo de produção, por isso, este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar diferentes geometrias de ferramentas, mais precisamente, o ângulo de entrada e região de calibração (Hc) da mesma. Para modelamento numérico do processo, foi utilizado o software DeformTM, que possibilitou este estudo, com simulações da influência da ferramenta no perfil de tensões residuais dos produtos (barras de aço AISI1045). Foram analisados os diferentes comportamentos do material para processos com fieiras de ângulos de 15° e 20°, com foco nas variações de tensões residuais visando investigar o produto final da trefilação. Em uma das principais comparações entre as fieiras anteriormente mencionadas, observou-se uma diferença de tensões residuais de aproximadamente 206MPa no centro das barras trefiladas, resultado que somado a distribuições assimétricas de tensões em relação ao ponto central de determinado corte da barra, podem ocasionar o seu empenamento.

O EOF é um forno básico a oxigênio caracterizado pelo conceito de pré-aquecimento da carga sólida baseado na energia da corrida anterior. Mesmo com um sistema supervisório, a operação era totalmente manual. O trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento e implantação de modelos matemáticos, objetivando atingir a temperatura e composição química programada para vazamento. O sistema de equações consideram todas as entradas metálicas com as respectivas composições químicas e define a quantidade necessária de energético ou refrigerante, além da adição de cales conforme a basicidade e teor de MgO objetivados na escória. O desenvolvimento passou inicialmente por um conhecimento profundo do processo, dada a excelência e originalidade do forno EOF, que é diferente dos demais convertedores a oxigênio. A seguir, foram definidos padrões e práticas operacionais que garantissem a reprodutibilidade do processo, para, finalmente, permitir o cálculo através de modelos matemáticos. Com a automação do processo foram conseguidos expressivos ganhos de produtividade, redução no consumo de materiais, aumento do rendimento metálico e menor consumo de refratários.

Neste estudo foram utilizados 2 tipos de materiais sendo um de aço estrutural microligado ao nióbio e outro um aço C-Mn que foram submetidas a ensaios termomecânicos na máquina de torção. Os parâmetros de processamento como a temperatura, taxa de deformação, deformação, taxa de resfriamento e tempo entre passes tem uma relação com os fenômenos metalúrgicos e microestruturais. Foram realizados ensaios de torção com múltiplas deformações em resfriamento contínuo, isotérmicos contínuos e isotérmicos interrompidos com duas deformações. Através desses ensaios, foram levantadas as curvas de escoamento plástico das quais foram obtidas as deformações críticas para início da recristalização dinâmica, deformação de pico, parâmetro de amaciamento, temperaturas críticas (Tnr, Ar3 e Ar1) e tensão de escoamento média (TEM). No geral os resultados obtidos são semelhantes aos resultados da literatura e no caso da deformação crítica para início da recristalização, da deformação de pico e da tensão no estado estacionária pudemos aperfeiçoar as equações da literatura.

Na produção de vários tipos de aço o controle da composição, tamanho e distribuição das inclusões não-metálicas é de fundamental importância, não só para a qualidade dos produtos siderúrgicos, como também para a garantia da continuidade do processo de fabricação do aço. O controle da composição das inclusões é uma questão que pode ser adequadamente analisada com o uso da ferramenta ‘termodinâmica computacional’, proporcionando ao aciarista informações vitais para ajustes no processo. Neste estudo, com base em cálculos termodinâmicos, foram construídos diagramas de fases especiais com a utilização do software FactSage e seus bancos de dados. Especialmente as influências do Al e do Ti sobre a composição das inclusões foram analisadas, levando-se em conta o teor de oxigênio total. Duas metodologias (estática e dinâmica) foram usadas para se compreender o importante fenômeno da reoxidação. Os resultados deste trabalho, além de auxiliar engenheiros aciaristas a compreender este tipo de análise, deverão estimular estudantes desta área da engenharia a se engajar na assim chamada ‘termodinâmica computacional’.

As mining activity moves to remote and less developed locations globally, a holistic approach to mine development is fundamental for achieving a balance between strong financial returns and corporate social responsibility and transparency. Key inter-related fundamentals such as social licence to operate, life-of-mine operational planning, minimising environmental impacts and, most importantly, attractive investment returns for the mining company all contribute to the viability of any new mining project.However, the typical practice in the mining industry is often to treat environmental and social/community aspects as separate compliance issues that are dealt with at minimum cost and disruption to the project and resulting operation. This often results in less than optimum environmental and social outcomes, and presents considerable liabilities at the time of closure when rehabilitation programs continue to require funding when all revenue has ceased.The five capitals model seeks to identify each of the key contributors to sustainable development as financial, manufactured/physical, social, human and natural to formulate a type of triple bottom line approach balancing these often competing project factors. The SUSOP® sustainability risks and opportunities framework, developed by the mining industry, bases its approach on the five capitals model and proposes an approach that breaks down enterprise silos to identify innovative solutions for life-of-mine sustainability. This framework has been developed with the nature of mining projects in mind in order to produce approaches and outcomes relevant throughout the life cycle from the planning phases, through project design and construction into operation and closure.This paper argues the need for a more holistic approach to the development and operation of mining projects, and presents case studies where a holistic approach has been applied, in whole or part, and discusses the lessons learned from these case studies.CITATION:Corder, G D, Keith, A and Dyer, L, 2014. "Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. Tailings are made of ground rock that is left over from removing valuable minerals. The tailings are usually fine particles that cause environmental issues for storage and disposal. Disposal of tailings is a growing concern, as more tailings are produced from the increasing demand for mined material (ITRC, 2008). This project proposes a way to convert the mine waste to a useful product. Tailings were selected from a South Carolina crushed stone quarry, the products of which are used for road beds, sidewalks, asphalt and driveways. These tailings were processed to generate synthetic aggregates for construction applications. The synthetic aggregate creates a product that could be used for many purposes, including aggregate for sidewalks, driveways, roads and building materials. Testing methods followed the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) guidelines for physical testing of coarse natural aggregate, which are sieve analysis, Los Angeles abrasion, absorption, specific gravity and soundness test. The synthetic aggregate produced passed all tests for NCDOT and, in some instances, rated better than a natural aggregate. Using the tailings from the crushed stone and mining industry would convert the waste into a valuable, marketable product.

Brazil and Colombia have large reserves of coal, those reserves in Brazil are located predominantly in the south and Colombia the main reserves are located in the north. Despite the relative ease of exploitation, these resources have been underestimated as a source of energy. Currently, these countries are developing projects and partnerships aiming to qualify this mineral resource, adding quality to the final product of the processing plants. In this scenario the processing of Brazilian and Colombian coal in flotation columns appears as a promising alternative, having been successful in mineral systems containing fine particles This paper aims to study the overall process of column flotation for a specific Brazilian coal and a specific Colombian coal. The material used in this study consists of fine coal from Brazil (Copelmi) and Colombia (Cerrejon). The objective is to recover carbonaceous matter and reduce the ash and contaminants grade. The two coals were floated using a negative bias in a 5 cm diameter conventional flotation column of 5 m high. Flotation parameter investigated included air velocity in the range 0.6 to 1.5 cm/s. For all runs, a constant negative bias of -0.25 cm/s and a pulp concentration of 8% w/w were used. For Cerrejón coal, 300 g/ton of frother and 907 g/ton of collector was used, whereas for Copelmi coal, 600 g/ton of frother and 1815 g/ton of collector was employed. The frother was a commercial Aerofroth 65 (AF65), whereas the collector was Kerosene. For the Colombian coal, in general, yield, organic recovery, ash recovery and water recovery decreased with the increasing air rate. However, for Brazilian coal the air rate had no significant effect. For Colombian coal, the highest yield (60% w/w) and organic recovery (69% w/w) were obtained at the lowest air rate (0,6 cm/s). Being a rapidly developing country, India is undergoing a massive infrastructure phase change remarkably. The construction industry is already set to boom, but the time and space constraints necessitate the employment of heavy plants and machinery to take the foundations deeper than ever. Operating such machinery on soft or poor ground conditions without a good working platform leads to uncertainties with massive loss of men and machinery. Plenty of such cases can be observed on construction sites across the globe. Unfortunately, forming a temporary working platform is given least to no importance in the construction industry, particularly ground engineering. This glitch can only be addressed through standard guidelines or codal recommendations on designing and implementing temporary working platforms issued by regulatory bodies. The present paper highlights the importance of providing the working platform, existing design method for working platforms such as TWf 2019:02 of Temporary Works forum, Building Research Establishment BR470 and a brief discussion on the design and construction of the geosynthetic reinforced working platform with a case study is also included. A pitch has been made on the importance of Indian codes/guidelines for the design and construction of temporary working platforms. These guidelines will ensure the safety of the men and heavy machinery and, in addition, increase the productivity of foundation construction irrespective of weather conditions and also become part of the regular construction scope.

This paper describes operations of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co. at the Chief mine in the Tintic district, Juab County, Utah, where the outstanding problem is water control; the unique pumping methods employed are featured in this report. The ore bodies in this district occur as long, narrow shoots along fault fissures, usually in the Bluebell dolomite of Ordovician age. Oxide ores predominate above the 1800 level, which is also the natural water level. Sulfide ores containing lead, zinc, silver, and gold extend below the 1800 level. The mine is developed by vertical shafts and winzes, from which drifts are driven to the ore bodies. In the lower levels of the mine these drifts extend long distances from the shafts or winzes because of the relatively low dip of the ore shoots. The mine has been worked to the 2800 level and the 18-411 winze extends to the 3080 level.
