Steelmakers worldwide agree that the most efficient and cost-effective solution in BOF steelmaking is to desulfurize the hot metal between the blast furnace and converter. Various methods are currently in use, among which the Kanbara Reactor (KR, using only lime as a reagent), Magnesium mono-injection (MMI, using only magnesium; also known as the Ukraina-Desmag process) and co-injection (using magnesium and lime/CaC2) are leading. These three hot metal desulfurization methods are compared based on metallurgy, efficiency, costs and overall performance. Both available data from literature and experience from Danieli Corus engineers is used for this study. The KR process is able to reach low sulfur concentrations (> 10 ppm) in hot metal and has lower reagent costs. However, due to higher Fe-loss and heavy wear the KR process has the highest operational costs. The Magnesium mono-injection process is very fast due to the use of the reactive magnesium as reagent. Major problems with resulfurization (sulfur levels below 50 ppm cannot be reached) and the violence of the process made that this process could never get a firm foothold in the western steel industry. The co-injection process with magnesium and lime proves to be able to combine the best of both worlds. It can reach low sulfur concentrations and desulfurize fast. Co-injection is also the most flexible and cost effective.

This project is exploring the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site soils and tailings as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project incorporates growing tree seedlings in an underground greenhouse grown from seeds planted in the degraded mine soils in which they will eventually be planted. The outcome of the project is expected to lead to a successful solution for re-establishing tree growth in soils and tailings containing high metal concentrations with minimal post-planting human intervention. The research is being conducted in an underground greenhouse located 100 ft below the surface in the old Orphan Boy Mine Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) located on Montana Tech’s campus in Butte, Montana.

Safety and health professionals recognize that training is a critical element of any effective safety and health program. An extensive literature survey has led the authors to conclude that we are at the beginning of a revolution in training due to changes in the demographics of the workforce, the rapid growth of technology, and the universal ascendance of the information age. Of present major concern in the mining industry is how to provide appropriate training for an aging workforce and concurrently develop training for the expected influx of new and less experienced miners as older workers retire. This report explores the key issues in the changing safety and health training area as identified by the multidisciplinary team of NIOSH researchers who conducted the literature survey. Issues include generational differences between newer mine workers and the present workforce with respect to their physical, psychological, social, and cultural characteristics; their learning styles and work expectations; and the impact of technology. Some preliminary conclusions are offered for future training needs.

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. When flowsheet development resumed in 2001, the target grade was raised to 20% ni. initially triethylene tetramine and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in a lime circuit, but by recycling process water and the contained thiosalts, the required nickel grade was made without depressants. construction of the mill was fast-tracked, with start-up in september 2005. ramp-up was faster than other recent nickel installations, with tonnage being limited by concentrate dewatering due to higher-thanexpected ore grades.RÉSUMÉ l’usine de traitement de Voisey’s Bay traite un minerai à teneur élevée en pentlandite et chalcopyrite dans une matrice formée surtout de pyrrhotite/troïlite. By the end of 1995, the ovoid had been well explored, and at that time was thought to have a reserve of at least 30 million tonnes (Mt), with an average grade of 2.83% ni and 2.0% cu (naldrett, singh, Krstic, & li, 2000). Drilling to the east of the ovoid indicated the presence of significant mineralization. in June 1995, inco limited bought a 25% share in the Voisey’s Bay nickel company (VBnc), which was a subsidiary holding company set up by Diamond Fields. inco also bought 8% of Diamond Fields and negotiated the right to sell all the nickel produced from VBnc for 20 years as part of this agreement. in april 1996, inco bought Diamond Fields and acquired the remaining 75% of VBnc shares."

The objectives of this research were to examine and to laboratory performance of several brands of rigid urethane een brands, produced by 13 manufacturers, were examined. was performed in a laboratory under controlled conditions. document the foam. Eight-All testing Preliminary laboratory tests included flame spread evaluations, flame penetration, ignition temperatures, air permeability, and adhesion. Having established arbitrary cutoff values, the original 18 candidates were narrowed to 8. More specialized tests followed. The effects of water immersion and dry aging on flame spread performance and other physical properties were then examined. This Bureau of Mines report was written to provide information for those concerned with using rigid urethane foam as a sealant. Its intent is to describe the various laboratory evaluations performed and to delineate the performance of each candidate. This report neither promotes nor discourages the use of rigid urethane foams. It presents results that will enable those responsible for using or enforcing the use of rigid urethane foams in underground mines to make informed decisions.

"In the synthesis process of ß -La2S3 via the sulfurization of La2O3 powder using CS2 gas, La2O2S was formed. This occurred at an initial stage of the reaction for sulfurization temperatures below 973K, and ß -La2S3 was also formed at a shorter period for higher sulfurization temperatures. It was found that the oxygen content in ß -La2S3 powders decreased gradually with an increase in sulfurization temperature. On the other hand, the carbon content in these powders increased gradually with an increase in the sulfurization temperature. Though it has been reported that ß -La2S3 was transformed to Y -La2S3 at 1723K± 50K, the sintered compact of double-phase Y -La2S3 and ß. -La2S3 was formed at a rather higher temperature of 1973K when the synthetic powder of ß -La2S3 containing a high amount of oxygen was used. However, phase transformation of -La2S3 to Y -La2S3 progressed preferentially with a decrease in the oxygen content of synthetic ß -La2S3 powder. The Seebeck coefficient of the sintered double-phase Y -La2S3 and -La2S3 was higher than that of the single-phase Y -La2S3, reported previously.Introduction La2S3 exists in three polymorphic forms that are similar to a series of Ce2S3, Pr2S3 and Nd2S3: a, ß , and Y'. The a -La2S3, which is stable at low temperature, is irreversibly transformed to ß -La2S3 of various compositions in the solid-solution range between La2S3 and La3S4, at 923 ± 50K. The -La2S3 may also be an oxysulfide of La10S14O2. Moreover, the ß .-La2S3 phase is transformed to Y -La2S3 ,which has a Th3P4 structure, at 1573 ± 100K. The melting point of Y -La2S3 is 2398 ± 30K where this temperature is similar to those of common refractory materials such as silica and alumina. Therefore, it can be predicted that y -La2S3 which has a high melting point and a thermodynamic stability due to the strong affinity of La for S, would have &high refractory character and chemical inertness in many molten metals. The y -La2S3, colored vivid faint yellow is stable up to 623K in air, where oxidation starts. y -La2S3 is frequently used as pigments for plastics and paints3. Furthermore, Y -La2S3 which is a semiconductor, is considered to be useful as a thermoelectric conversion materials, because it has a high Seebeck coefficient."

Este trabalho apresenta os resultados parciais de uma tese de doutorado desenvolvida no PPGE3M da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), com as Empresas Produtoras de Resíduos perigosos (EPRs) do setor metal mecânico da região de São Leopoldo/RS e suas Empresas Prestadoras de Serviços Ambientais (PSAs). A maioria das empresas PSAs iniciaram suas atividades com o apoio de grandes EPRs, principalmente, em função das suas necessidades de atender às exigências legais do órgão ambiental estadual, a Fundação Estadual de Proteção Ambiental (FEPAM), para a adequada disposição de resíduos perigosos. É importante salientar que não existe um diagnóstico sobre o setor de prestação de serviços ambientais no RS para resíduos industriais perigosos. Desta maneira, o objetivo deste trabalho foi o de identificar e priorizar as características da qualidade dos serviços ambientais de nove PSAs selecionados pelas próprias EPRs, durante o ano de 2013, por meio da adoção do Quality Function Deployment (QFD). O resultado piloto aponta a proatividade do setor nas características de empreendedorismo e inovação e no atendimento à legislação ambiental.

At the Highway gold deposit, 37 kilometres south of Charters Towers, gold mineralisation occurs in several stratiform layers and is enriched near the surface by lateritic weathering. The host rocks of the mineralisation are ferruginous and baritic, intensely sericitised, kaolinised and silicified rhyolitic tuffs and pyroclastics of the Cambrian-Ordovician Mount Windsor Volcanics. The geology of the deposit is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.Forty-six reverse circulation percussion drill holes were completed by North-Queensland Resources N.L. for a total of 2,093 metres of drilling to further outline and test the open pit resource. The drilling indicated a resource of 171,000 tonnes averaging 4.4 grams per tonne gold and 5.0 grams per tonne silver.A shallow initial pit, approximately 30 metres deep, has been designed to mine the high grade upper portion of the western stratiform layer and part of the eastern layer. This initial pit is designed to mine 45,400 tonnes of western mineralisation at an average grade of 7.84 grams per tonne gold and 22,200 tonnes of eastern mineralisation at an average grade of 1.42 grams per tonne gold. Waste is estimated at 110,900 tonnes.

Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. Surfaces of rock slopes in cold regions often become frozen in winter. Therefore, understanding time-dependent behavior of frozen rock, as well as that of unfrozen rock, is important for long-term stability assessment of rock slopes. In this study, a series of uniaxial compression tests and creep tests were carried out on Shikotsu welded tuff under dry and water-saturated conditions at -20 °C to clarify timedependent strength and deformation of the frozen rock. The influence of water content on them also was investigated. It was found that the amount of deformation of the water-saturated specimen was much greater than that of the dry specimen. It also was found that the creep behavior of the water-saturated specimen was similar to that of polycrystalline ice. These show that deformation of the water-saturated specimen is strongly affected by pore ice. The UCS of the water-saturated specimen was approximately equal to that of the dry specimen at a strain rate below 4.2×10-6/s, and its value was about 17 MPa. However, the former increased up to 26 MPa at 4.2×10-4/s with loading rate, whereas there was little increase in the latter. This means that the UCS of the water-saturated specimen was always greater than that of the dry specimen at higher strain rates. The creep life of water-saturated specimens was longer than that of the dry specimens at stress level greater than 15 MPa. These results of UCS and creep life show that inclusion effect due to presence of pore ice plays an important role on strength of the water-saturated specimen. Creep life of the non-failure specimen that was loaded for more than three days was estimated by the relationship between creep life and axial strain rate at 10 s on failure specimens. It was found that creep life of the water-saturated specimens was shorter than that of the dry specimen at stress levels less than 14 MPa. This suggests that estimation of creep life of frozen rock under water-saturated condition is important for the stability assessment of frozen rock slopes. It was clear that the loading-rate dependency of UCS was related to the stress-level dependency of creep life in both dry and wet conditions. This indicates that there are common fracture mechanism in creep and uniaxial compression tests. It also indicates that the creep life can be estimated by the relationship between the UCS and the loading rate. The time dependencies of the water-saturated specimen were in good agreement with those of polycrystalline ice. This confirms that pore ice strongly affects the strength of the water-saturated specimens as, well as the deformation behavior.

Several researchers have shown that the surface of chalcopyrite becomes hydrophobic under oxidizing conditions. Because dissolution of copper from chalcopyrite in dump leaching occurs under oxidizing conditions, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the effect of surfactants on chalcopyrite leaching under dump chemical conditions. Surfactants were selected for study because they can lower interfacial tension. The tests were conducted in shaking water baths using 250-mL Erlenmeyer flasks in statistical experimental design formats. The addition of nonionic surfactants increased copper extraction in the fernc sulfate leaching of chalcopyrite when sufficient Fe3+ was present. A positive interaction between Fe3l+ concentration and surfactant concentration was demonstrated. Copper concentration in the leachhing solutions was increased by as much as 100 pct at 25° and 50° C by adding nonionic surfactants. ionic surfactants decreased leaching. The structure of the nonionic surfactants and their hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) influenced surfactant performance. The branched hydrophile of an ethoxypolyol was beneficial to surfactant performance. The ethoxypolyol was the superior surfactant at 25° C, but became unstable at 50° C. Four surfactants, an ethoxyalchohol and three block copolymers, performed best at 50° C.

The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at Montana Tech is investigating various methods of extracting and refining rare earth elements from mineral ores and concentrates. As part of this research, an elevated temperature “roasting” process has been evaluated as a means of converting the rare earth elements contained in various matrices to bromides as a pretreatment step in preparation for downstream rare earth element extraction and recovery operations. Laboratory and bench-scale experiments have been performed to assess the effects of varying temperature (150 to 400° C), time (1 to 4 h), and the ammonium bromide to rare earth oxide molar ratio (6 to 24) in the roaster charge. The results show that nearly complete bromination of the rare earth oxide is achievable when the roast is performed under optimum conditions.

"The development of industry and intensive use of natural resources leads to a significant decrease in the share of reserves of rich ores, deposits of which have nearly all been exploited. Large amounts of displaced rock mass are accumulated, significant emissions of gas and dust from mining, dust from dumps and tailing pits, ingress of chemicals and toxic elements in surface and groundwater all can have negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health. Especially dangerous is the impact in Arctic regions with extreme climate conditions. The maintenance of overburden dumps and tailings dams requires significant capital and material costs. In this paper, some mining enterprises of the Murmansk region, in the Russian Federation, consider the environmental problems of the industry and propose some solutions.INTRODUCTIONThe safety of environment during the extraction and processing of minerals is a very acute problem throughout the whole world. The problem acquires a specific character in the Russian Federation. There, rather poor minerals, often existing in unconventional forms and including several mineral components are processed. The Russian mineral base has a specific geographical location; most of the deposits under operation are located in the Subarctic or Arctic regions, as well as in Siberia and in the Far East. Vast amounts of rock waste and tailings pose serious economic and ecological problems in mining regions. The operation of overburden heaps and tailings requires considerable capital and material costs. The dumps withdraw vast lands from potential commercial use. Large amounts of mined rock disturb the existing geological balance; emissions of gas and dust which accompany the mining operations, dusting of waste heaps and tailings, emissions of reagents and heavy metals into natural surface and ground waters all can produce negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health."

DURING the last three years, investigations on the aluminum reduction of magnesium-bearing compounds have been initiated at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, The Technical University of Norway. The results of these investigations are reported in this paper. Very little information exists in the literature on the reaction between magnesium compounds and metallic aluminum. The available information itself is conflicting, and, to clarify the existing discrepancy, the reactions between aluminum and magnesium oxide (MgO), caJcined dolomite (CaO . MgO) and olivine (Mg2SiO.) were studied. The logical approach for the study of these reactions between condensed states with the formation of a gaseous phase is, ( 1) the measurement of the equilibrium vapour pressure of the gas, in this case magnesium, associated with the respective reactions and, (2) the identification of the end products of the reaction in order to establish the re-action scheme.

The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. These propert lies have been determined for suites of whole particles of flotation concentrates, mounted without further preparation. The facility is also well adapted to the measurement of general Istereological parameters. The computer control software is based on an operating system which includes the device drivers and which is linked to FORTRAN programs [containing the procedural algorithms. A galvanic cell, using liquid MgCl2 or MgC12-CaC12 mixtures as the electrolyte, has been used to determine activities in Mg-A1 liquid alloys between 700' and 880°C. The incovporation of a chlorine electrode in the cell also allowed measurements to be made of the standard free energy of formation of MgCl2(l). The results are shown to be in good agreement with thermo-chetrlical values from the literature, and this is taken as evidence that the small, known solubility of magnesium in iMgCl2 introduces no significant error in galcanic cell measurements. Within experimental error, the activity coefficients and relative partial molar enthalpies at 800°C are shown to be represented by the following "subregular" solution equations: logy~~ =-0.68(1 -xMgj3 log yAL =-1.02(1 - XMf + 0.68(1 - XMf H.M = -4400(1 - %)3 / cal Mg 7Ag' HZ =-6600(1 - xA1)' + 4400(1 - XMf cal SCHNEIDER and toll' have used a transpiration technique to measure the vapor pressures of magnesium over Mg-A1 alloys between 544" and 594°C. amsstad,' however, has since suggested that the extrapolation to zero flow rate, used by these authors in interpreting their apparent pressure vs flow rate data, gives unreliable results. Rogers, Tomlinson, and Richardson,3 in interpreting the results of solution equilibria between Mg-A1 alloys and liquid MgC12, also considered the measurements of Schneider and Stoll to be unreliable and preferred to derive activities for the alloys from the earlier boiling point determinations of ~eit~ebel~ and the partial molar heats recommended by Kubaschewski and ~atterall.~ These latter heats were based substantially on the early calorimetric work of Kawa-kami but, unfortunately, his work on other systems has sometimes been found to be inaccurate.7 Rogers et al., in the above-mentioned paper,3 tentatively concluded that the most likely species responsible for the limited solubility (0.3 mole pct at 800°C) of magnesium in MgC12 were Mg° (neutral) and Mg2++. Two more recent studies8,9 have supported Mg2++ as the soluble species. In the present study, activities in Mg-A1 alloys have been determined by means of a galvanic cell involving liquid MgCl2 or MgC12CaCl, mixtures as the electrolyte. Since the reactive nature of magnesium precluded simple Faraday yield experiments, a chlorine electrode was incorporated in the cell in order that the performance of the cell could be checked by measurements of the heat and free energy of formation of MgC12. This procedure was considered necessary since it has been suggested1' that the solubility of a metal in a molten salt might introduce electronic conductivity; also, previous determinations of the standard electrode potential for MgC12 differed by as much as 70 mv11-13 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Analyses of the materials used in preparing the alloys and the electrolyte mixtures are presented in Table I. The alloys were prepared by induction melting weighed amounts of the metals in a graphite crucible held under an argon atmosphere. Pure anhydrous magnesium chloride was prepared by heating the mixture MgCl, . 6H20 +NH4C1(1:1) to 650°C, followed by melting under dry argon. The melting point of the dry MgC12 was found by differential thermal analysis to be 714.8oC, which compares well with the accepted value of 714C.14 This agreement was taken to be an indication of the high purity of the dried salt.
