The Conrad Hill mine vas first opened as a gold mine about 182 and has been operated at various times since then. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic minerals program, mapped and sampled the accessible mine workings. The work failed to reveal appreciable copper values or evidence of additional ore deposits.

As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for critical materials, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the consolidation of an iron-base superalloy (20 pct Cr, 5 pct each Ni and Mn, 1 pct each C, W, Mo, and Cb, and the balance Fe) and its modifications by powder metallurgy (P/M) techniques. Vacuum-atomized, prealloyed powder was used. Consolidation was by sintering of cold-pressed alloy powder, or by forging plus rolling or extrusion of canned powder. Several commercial lubricants were evaluated in the pressing operation. At 50-tsi compacting pressure with up to 3 wt-pct lubricant, green strengths did not exceed 1,000 psi. Powder sintered just below the solidus temperature attained a tensile strength of 69,000 psi and 4 pct elongation. Liquid-phase sintering produced higher densities, lower tensile strengths, and nil ductility. Canned powder was forged and rolled at 1,200° C, yielding a 100-hr rup¬ture strength of 9,800 psi at 815° C and a room-temperature tensile strength of >130,000 psi at 6 pct elongation. Heat treatment of modified P/M iron-base alloy containing 0.63 pct C resulted in a 100-hr rupture strength of 17,000 psi. Oxidation resistance at 805° to 815° C of the forged and rolled P/M iron-base alloy was similar to that of the cast iron-base alloy and supe¬rior to conventional stainless steels.

"There have been a pioneering efforts over the last forty years in the development of metal matrix composites (MMCs) as a new engineering materials, having improved properties, light weight characteristics and competitive costs compared to traditional materials. Following recent advancements in casting technology and the use of melt stirring device by foundries, discontinuously reinforced MMCs where prominent alloys are reinforced with particulates or short fibres and the being employed ·in the production of castings targeted for automotive and aerospace application.The ZA-27 alloy has a high strength compared to zinc or alluminium alloys with a lower melting temperature. The main objective of the present research is to study the effect of quartz particles on the mechanical behaviour of ZA-27 alloy composites. The results showed that the ultimate tensile strength, hardness, Young's modulus of the composite gradually increased with increase in the weight percentage of the quartz reinforcement. The present work is focused on the thermodynamic study of the methane or biogas mixtures conversion on Cu-ceria catalysts. Several experimental studies reported in literature have demonstrated the ability of these materials to operate as SOFC anodes for direct methane oxidation, with the evidence of enhanced tolerance towards sulfur poisoning and carbon deposition. More recently, experimental investigations have shown the feasibility of Cu-ceria anodes to directly operate with simulated biogas feeds at intermediate temperature (1023K). In this way, the effect of the ceria redox properties on the equilibrium composition is investigated, considering methane or biogas mixtures as the fuel. Conditions under which carbon deposition and sulfur poisoning can be prevented are determined. Our study combines results from the classical thermodynamics, obtained with the help of FactSage software, with the new Cu-S and Ni-S diagrams proposed in literature, which were calculated based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT). These diagrams are able to predict a region where sulfur interacts with the metal surface through chemisorption. A comparison between the performances of Ni-YSZ and Cu-CeO2 catalysts is established from a thermodynamic viewpoint. Theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental trends from literature.

Mineral processing is characterised by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high-grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customer’s requirement for product purity and consistent quality increases.Over recent years beneficiation techniques for iron ore fines have become more important in order to achieve a maximised utilisation of ore resources and to produce competitive products according to international standards.Many high capacity iron ore beneficiation plants that target the production of fines focus on gravity separation processes using fluidised bed classifiers and spirals or wet high intensity magnetic separators as an alternative. This paper demonstrates the suitability of utilising the allflux® two-stage fluidised bed classifiers to treat iron ore particles up to 2 mm in size as well as showing how the high capacity gaustec® wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) technology offers several advantages compared to other WHIMS technology.The combination of the allflux® and gaustec® technologies offer the following benefits:The two-stage fluidised bed classification extracts a significant amount of concentrate from the feed. This in turn reduces the feed capacity required for the gaustec® WHIMS located downstream.The second classification stage produces a -0.5 + 0.1 mm product and a -0.1 mm product. The efficiency of the magnetic separation on these classifi ed products is high due to optimised settings for each size fraction.

In surfactant flooding, surfactants added are often a mixture of the same type of molecules with different lengths of carbon chains. The relationship between a single, pure surfactant solution and crude oil is seldom studied. Additionally, up to now, alkylbenzene sulfonates are applied widely in surfactant flooding, such as Daqing oilfield, China. A factory producing alkylbenzene sulfonates will enlarge its yield to 20 000 tons per year over there. For the purposes of widening the alkylben-zene sulfonates? application, 16 kinds of pure alkylbenzene sulfonates were synthesized through Friedel-Crafts acylation and Wolff-Kishner reduction reactions, and the compounds? molecular structures were confirmed by 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectra. The factors affecting interfacial tension (IFT), such as, surfactant type, oil composition, electrolyte concentration, and alkali concentration were considered. The synthesized pure surfactants? critical micelle concentration (CMC) and optimal salinity were measured through interfacial tension technique. According to lab experiments results, heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (2SY) was synthesized in magnifying scale in Jinzhou Wash Chemical Plant and the coretests were conducted using it. The results showed that the homemade heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (2SY) flooding can improve oil displacement efficiency 20% more than water flooding at surfactant?s concentration from 0.05%(wt) to 0.2 %(wt).

"In the preset work, the viscosity model (named modified KTH model) proposed by Sichen Du and S. Seetharaman et al and extended by Shu Qi-feng was applied to the ESR slag systems. A correlation to predict the viscosities of CaF 2-(CaO)-Al203 slags using interaction coefficients of different cations in the presence of oz-and viscosity interaction coefficients between oz-and F in the presence of different cations has been developed. The interaction coefficient between oz- and F- in the presence of Al3+ was determined from the experimental data as shown in known literatures. The good agreement between the calculated viscosities and the experimental data in the CaF2-(CaO)-Al203 systems has indicated that this approach can be successfully employed to predict the viscosities of ESR slags.IntroductionReliable viscosities data of high-temperature slag melts are important for the modeling and design of high temperature metallurgical processes. Although a number of experimental measurements have been carried out, the available viscosities data is still scarce compared to the needs of today's technology, especially in the case of complex melts. In process simulations, the needs of viscosity descriptions for complex systems which could enable the extrapolation of the data as functions of temperature and composition is strongly felt today."

Jabiru Metals completed a feasibility study on the Jaguar Base Metal Project in July 2005. The study was based on conventional truck haulage via a decline. Conveyor haulage was considered but not in sufficient detail to provide a meaningful comparison. The current study investigates the cost and productivity of alternative ore transport systems for the Jaguar project. The options considered are conventional underground truck, conveyor, road train, rigid frame truck, monorail haulage and shaft hoisting. Shaft hoisting was not considered in detail due to the high capital outlay for such a relatively short mine life of less than six years. This study goes beyond the common approach of evaluating haulage systems in isolation; it includes development costs, timing of ore production and costs associated with mine services as well as administration and milling costs. The results of this study indicate that the best haulage option for the Jaguar project is conventional truck using the Hitachi AH400 trucks. The net present value (NPV) for this option is A$8.13 million higher than the next best option namely the Kiruna E635 electric truck. The conveyor option has the lowest operating cost per tonne of ore but the longer development time negatively impacts on its NPV. The monorail option is considered impractical due to the number and length of trains required to achieve production targets.

A maneira com que acontece a nucleação interfere diretamente na forma dos contornos de grão e também nas propriedades do material em questão. Para visualizar melhor, pode-se utilizar uma célula cúbica, na qual é possível notar que em cada eixo há diferença de textura e densidade entre os grãos já desenvolvidos. Neste trabalho, foram empregadas duas vias de estudo a fim de obter os resultados desejados. A primeira delas é a nucleação homogênea dos grãos e a outra, a nucleação não homogênea, ambas com velocidade constante. Esse fenômeno pode ser visto durante a recristalização de grãos. Rios e Villa [6] criaram um método efetivo para analisar a cinética das transformações homogêneas e não homogêneas a partir do método de JMAK[1-5]. Para comparar método analítico foi desenvolvida uma simulação computacional com base no modelo analítico Rios e Villa [6], foi utilizado a metodologia do Cone Causal (método estocástico). Os gráficos gerados confirmam a teoria de Rios e Villa [6] para esses casos particulares e comparam os resultados obtidos com o conceito de JMAK [1-5].

THIS investigation was undertaken in order to gain further information on the mechanism of plastic deformation of iron at temperatures between room temperature and 77.2°K, and also to contribute to our understanding of the low temperature brittleness phenomenon that occurs in both the tensile and impact tests. It was decided to study as pure an iron as possible and to use the tensile test in order to simplify the problem as much as possible. Two series of iron were used throughout the investigation: iron A, obtained from the National Research Corp. and supplied as gas-free, high purity iron; and iron B, obtained from Fast' and produced by melting iron under purified hydrogen. Typical analyses of samples of both irons, after fabrication, are given in Table I. The main difference in composition of these irons is in their nickel and oxygen contents. Nickel has a very large solid solubility in iron. However, oxygen has an extremely small solid solubility. An attempt was made to reduce the oxygen content still further by remelting under purified hydrogen. This was successful in reducing the oxygen content to -0.0006 pct. However, no results on tests of this iron are included, since difficulty was encountered in fabricating the ingot. Wire specimens 1 mm in diameter were used for the investigation. The wires were produced from the ingots, as supplied, by cold rolling and swaging, with intermediate vacuum anneals at 700°C. Care was taken to reduce preferred orientation in the wires to a minimum by keeping the percentage of reduction in area between anneals of 30 to 40 pct. X-ray transmission photographs showed no indication of preferred orientation. The final grain size of iron A was 20 to 24 grains per linear mm and of iron B, 16 to 18 grains per linear mm. All specimens were tested in the decarburized and denitrided condition unless otherwise stated. The procedure was to pass hydrogen, saturated with water vapor at 26oC, over the specimens at 730°C for 2 hr. The specimens were quenched in iced water and then annealed in a vacuum of - 5x10-6 mm Hg for one day at 560°C to remove hydrogen. Higher temperatures were used for the vacuum anneal but this temperature was found to be quite satisfactory in removing hydrogen. The specimens were slow-cooled after the vacuum anneal. Where it is stated that the specimens were carburized, the specimens were given an identical decarburizing treatment and then carburized by passing hydrogen, saturated with pure n-heptane vapor at 0°C, over the specimens at 730°C. The specimens were then homogenized at 730°C for 2 hr in dry hydrogen. After the carburizing treatment the specimens were given the same vacuum anneal as for the decarburized specimens. The carbon content was determined from the maximum value of the internal friction carbon peak.2 Apparatus Fig. 1 shows a diagram of the tensile apparatus, with half the cooling coil removed. The cooling coil enabled temperatures from 200" to 77.2oK to be obtained. The apparatus was designed to fit a standard Tinius Olsen Universal tensile machine. The apparatus consisted of the rigid plate A which carried two carefully machined hooks H. These hooks attached the plate firmly to the moving crosshead of the tensile machine. The lower grip B was rigidly suspended from the plate A by three stainless steel rods. The upper grip C was joined to the upper grip of the tensile machine by the stainless steel rod E. The lower part of the apparatus was surrounded by a Dewar vessel, which was made a sliding fit inside the brass collar D. A flexible, efficient, and relatively low-cost drilling and blasting operation has evolved at Texasgulf Canada, Ltd.'s Kidd Creek underground mine. Located 32 km (20 miles) north of historic Timmins, Ontario, the underground operation utilizes a sublevel open stoping method developed with large-diameter blastholes. Over the years, Kidd Creek engineers have experimented with various drill-and-blast techniques, leading to the present-day practice. Continuing work is being conducted to further mechanize the blasting operation.

With significant increase in steel output in the world the price of iron ores has been soaring recently. Especially, there is a strong demand for iron ores in China, leading to more attentions paid to developing low grade iron ores. In this paper mineralogy of nm-of-mine hematite ore was deter-mined, and coal-based direct reduction-magnetic concentration was successfully developed to beneficiate low grade hematite ore. Mineralogy analysis indicates that this hematite ore is a super fine refractory ore, with the main valuable mineral hematite being closely associated with quartz and distributing uniformly and mostly occurring within the size of 3~5J.lITI,leading to being difficult to beneficiate due to super fine hematite and only grading 28.83% Fetotal. This hematite ore failed to be effectively upgraded by traditional processes in trial tests, such as reverse flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic separation, or the integration of the above processes. In contrast with adoption of the coal-based direct reduction-magnetic separation process, concentrate was produced with high iron grade and metallization degree in the present work, which provides a theoretical basis for utilization of low grade iron ores. By optimization of direct reduction conditions, such as reduction temperatures, duration and mass ratio of reductant coal to iron ore, the reduced ore with 93.72% metallization degree was prepared, and then three-stage grinding-magnetic separation of the reduced ore were conducted, the final concentrate was manufactured, assaying 69.54% Fetotal and 98.01 % metallization degree, and with low content of impurities. This iron concentrate with high metallization degree produced by this process is a superior burden for converter instead of blast furnace. This process is enviromnent friendly by directly making iron using coal and iron ores instead of coke, resulting in less emissions and low production cost.

DEVELOPMENT at Steep Rock lake has given rise to renewed interest in the geology of the iron ore deposits in the Lake Superior Region and has implications of no small moment bearing upon methods of exploration in the Precambrian Shield generally. Following upon the Regional Lake Superior meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in August, 1941, the authors prepared a paper on the Steep Rock deposits, which appeared in the A.I.M.E. publication, Mining Technology, for January, 1943. Between Januar7 and April, 1943, exploration at Steep Rock was continued by means o vertical, Mesabi-type churn-drill holes put down from the ice. This drilling has enlarged the tonnage of ore previously known and has disclosed further facts relating to the origin of the ore. The added evidence, we believe, goes to support the hypothesis that the deposits were formed by a process of replacement due to upward-moving, iron-bearing solutions which came in as igneous after-effects. Accordingly, in presenting the subject to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, it seems best not to change our first explanation, but to prefix the original paper with an interpretation of the results of the more recent explorations completed after its publication.

Visando elucidar o comportamento da carepa terciária durante a laminação de tiras a quente, em um aço produzido como laminado a quente e com rigorosa exigência de qualidade superficial, foi realizada uma parada forçada do laminador, impondo-se, imediatamente, um resfriamento rápido da superfície da tira. Amostras coletadas na região do arco de contato mostraram que a carepa possui espessura na faixa de 10 ?m a 14 ?m na entrada das cadeiras, sendo reduzida para 7 ?m com a deformação, sem ocorrência de ruptura. Tais características indicam que, do ponto de vista do comportamento no trem acabador, a carepa apresenta espessura e plasticidade adequadas para evitar defeitos nos produtos laminados. A carepa foi constituída predominantemente por Fe3O4, óxido plástico na temperatura de laminação. Foi desenvolvido e aplicado um modelo de crescimento da carepa, que forneceu valores de espessura muito próximos dos medidos, se tornando uma ferramenta útil para análise da influência de condições de processo na carepa.

During the last few years the New Lead Belt of Southeastern Missouri has become the main source of lead in the United States. It also produces significant amounts of zinc, copper and silver. The mines are located on a narrow, mineralized trend extending southward from Viburnum, MG. for about 35 miles. The ore occurs as replacement deposits in the Bonneterre lime- stone formation which is about 1000 ft below the surface. In most of the mines, enough water is produced to supply the milling requirements without any reuse. There are dry areas, however, and at least two mills must rely on water reclaimed from their tailings lake to augment the mine water. These mills have no choice but to utilize recycled mill water.

"AngloGold Ashanti Brasil, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, has recently commissioned a new autoclave for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold feeds at their Corrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Design of the new plant, including feed acidulation, pressure oxidation, oxidized solids washing and solution neutralization circuits, was based on the results of test work conducted by Sherritt at their pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. This paper describes the results of the pilot plant study as well as highlights of the design exercise.INTRODUCTIONAngloGold Ashanti Brasil (AGA Brasil) has recently commissioned a refractory gold pressure oxidation plant at the site of the original São Bento operation in Brazil. The design of the São Bento pressure oxidation facility was based on Sherritt technology; Sherritt carried out the original process development test work in the mid-1980s, provided a process design package and detailed specifications for critical pressure oxidation equipment and participated in the training of operators and commissioning of the plant. The São Bento plant was operated between 1986 and 2007, when the original ore body was exhausted (Silva et al., 2004). AGA Brasil purchased the facility from Eldorado Gold in 2008, with the intent of refurbishing the plant to process refractory gold concentrates produced from the nearby Córrego do Sítio mining area.Sherritt International Corporation has a long history in the development and application of commercial pressure oxidation and pressure leaching processes. Sherritt’s development of technology for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates commenced in the 1980s in collaboration with Homestake for application at the McLaughlin project in California. This was followed by several commercial applications in Canada, Papua New Guinea and Brazil (Berezowsky et al., 1991). More than thirty pilot plant campaigns investigating the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores or concentrates have been conducted by Sherritt since the 1980s, and projects with Sherritt contributions to the process development studies and/or engineering design account for about half of the commercial plants that have operated to date with this type of process (Collins et al., 2011a; 2011b)."

Brisbane’s Airport Link is Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, worth a total value of A$4.8 billion. The project is using surface and underground blasting to excavate hard volcanic rock, Brisbane Tuff. This paper tells the story of the most challenging and difficult blast of the whole project: the removal of a remnant pillar of rock (approximately 2250 m3) next to a major arterial road and within 100 m of existing infrastructure including a number of heritage listed buildings, residences and privately owned sensitive receivers. The pillar consisted of a hard rock wall (Brisbane Tuff) between 2 m and 6 m thick, 15 m high and 35 m wide; with in situ precast concrete piles embedded within 1 m of the boundary of the pillar. Orica Australia Pty Limited was contracted by Thiess John Holland, to perform the work in this area, including design, modelling, drilling and loading of the explosives, as well as blast clearance and shotfiring. Access to the area was limited so all explosives and equipment, including the 20 t drill rig, had to be lifted in and out by crane. Due to the nature of the blast, with infrastructure 5 m directly in front of the 15 m high face, there was only ever going to be one chance to get this blast right. This was an extremely complex blast which required the use of a number of different types of packaged explosives, as well as special timing techniques only made possible by using electronic initiating systems. This type of blast is high risk, and is more typical of a building demolition in the urban environment. The blast was fired on the 25 September 2010, and was highly successful. The environmental results for vibration and overpressure were well under the imposed limits, and the embedded concrete piles remained undamaged.

Sometimes a project is born easy, sometimes a project has a hard time being born. Probably every project can say we had tremendous problems to overcome and they would all be right. This project had all things happen to it. Born easy, a hard time after being born, there were tremendous problems to overcome but here it is, a major copper project, a major operation, and a new source of copper for Mexico and the world market. La caridad is an ore body located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It is at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level and the nearest major city is Hermosillo, the capital city of Sonora. Hermosillo is located approximately 270 kms (about 168 miles) to the southwest of la caridad. North of la caridad, 130 kms (about 81 miles), is the U.S. border town of Douglas, Arizona, which has a sister city on the Mexican side of the border -Agua Prieta.
