An investigation of the defect structure and properties following large strain deformation has been carried out using transmission electron microscopy and mechanical testing for a range of ferrous materials and for copper. It is shown that, for a variety of ferrous materials, a cellular substructure is developed during the initial stages of working and on further deformation the dimensions of this substructure are reduced. Quantitative measurements of the flow stress and the scale of the substructure indicate that the strength of heavily worked materials is largely determined by the spacing of cell walls. These cell walls act as dislocation barriers in a manner analogous to grain boundaries. FCC materials do not harden as extensively as bcc after cold working and the present observations on copper indicate that the dimensions of the substructure in fcc materials are not markedly reduced on deformation. The differences between the fcc and bcc structures produced by large plastic strains are ascribed to differences in the extent of dynamic recovery. It is tentatively proposed that the greater stability of substructural barriers in bcc structures results from strong interstitial Pinning effects. It is proposed that for large plastic strains the work-hardening process may be considered in terms of the reduction of substructural-barrier spacing during the working process. This pvovides a simplified hut useful analysis of the strain hardening occurring during mechanical processes. THE mechanisms of strain-hardening processes have occupied the attention of numerous investigators over the past three decades and a multitude of theories have emerged in this field. The majority of previous work has been concerned with the development of a description of the plastic behavior of single crystals in terms of dislocation theory.'" In contrast, scant attention has been given to the strengthening mechanisms operative during mechanical working processes such as rolling and drawing. The large plastic strains involved in these processes make it difficult to correlate the observations with any elementary dislocation theory. Further, as Bullen and coworkers3 have opined, for large plastic strains both hardening and recovery occur simultaneously and thus it is extremely difficult to estimate the effect of plastic strain on the ambient internal stress field. It is probable that for large plas- tic strains any theoretical estimate of the internal stress field must be made in terms of complex dislocation groups. Although some valuable theoretical work has been done toward calculating the elastic properties of dislocation groups4 any detailed self-consistent model for large plastic strain is as yet impossible. With these limitations in view it is still of value to examine the mechanical properties of highly strained materials as a function of their substructure. This relationship is explored in the present communication for a variety of materials subjected to rolling, drawing, or swaging. The primary object of this investigation has been to establish the validity and the limitations of the substructural strengthening mechanism proposed by Embury and eisher' for drawn pearlitic wire and by Meieran and Thomas for drawn tungsten wire. No attempt has been made to delineate the basic interaction mechanism which occurs between a slip dislocation and the substructure and the authors believe that a great deal more experimental evidence must be compiled before these fundamental aspects can be explored. Also, no specific attention has been given to the detailed formation of substructure during working. Experimental Details. A variety of materials were used in this investigation, the compositions and heat treatment of which are tabulated in Table I. The commercially pure iron is referred to throughout this report as Ferrovac E. The mechanical working processes were all performed at room temperature. The wire drawing was performed on a manual drawing bench. Reductions of between 10 and 20 pct in area per pass were used in both swaging and drawing. The experimental parameter used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the materials was the 0.2 pct proof stress. This was determined for wire samples using an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.02 in. per min. The techniques for preparation of samples for transmission electron microscopy have been described previo~sl~.~ Specimens from wire samples were prepared from longitudinal sections and in some cases from transverse sections. To evaluate the substructural characteristics of rolled materials, thin foil samples were prepared of both the face and edge sections. Results. One of the more familiar ways of expressing work hardening in mechanical working is by the flow stress as a function of reduction in cross-sectional area. Fig. 1 shows such a plot for Ferrovac E eutectoid carbon steel and for copper. The curve for Ferrovac E is characterized by an initial stage of rapid work hardening and a final stage of rapid work hardening separated by an intermediate stage with a low rate of work hardening. NECESSITY FOR PRICE FIXING DURING the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, clue to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to 82 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and so much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. LANE-PEABODY AGREEMENT In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly-stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

In the region of the North-Bohemian Coal Basin and its environment, there, in a row of places, are found the accumulations of rocks of the sedimentary and pyro clastic origin, the preliminary composition of those shows the possibility of their being utilized for the production of ecologically sparing natural Fe- and Ti- pigments and filling substances. In many places of the regions of Chomutov and Podborany and near Bilina and also in other places, there are found raw stocks perspective for the preparation of yellow up to ochre-brown, red, brown-red and green dyes. The target of project is the verification of dispensable reserves, their mineralogical composition and chemical and physical attributes, verification of treatment ways of Fe-and Ti-pigments separation (hydrocyclones, magnetic and electrostatic separation) and their stabilization and technological painting attributes for applications in colors, coating and plastic masses, mortar mixtures etc.

IN a previous communications the improvement in strength, harden-ability and color, occasioned by replacing gold in a typical gold-silver-copper alloy by various amounts of platinum, or palladium, was discussed. In the present paper the results of further studies upon the constitution and the nature of the hardening transformation in these alloys are pre-sented. This research may be summarized as follows: 1. The liquidus and solidus have been determined for the alloys of the palladium and platinum series. Cooling curves were utilized for deter-mining the liquidus of the palladium alloys but this method proved unsuitable for the platinum alloys so that a, novel quenching method was utilized for the latter. Both the liquidus and solidus of the palladium alloys increase steadily with the palladium content. The liquidus of the platinum alloys increases rapidly with the platinum content, while the solidus temperature increases with the platinum content up to about 14 atomic per cent platinum, but suffers no further increase with additional increments of platinum up to 20 atomic per cent at least, owing to a peritectic reaction. 2. Palladium, and even more effectively platinum, reduces the rate of grain growth. Owing to this fact and to the increase in the solidus temperature, "overheating" does little or no damage to alloys containing reasonable quantities of these elements. This is confirmed both by tensile tests and metallographic examination. 3. The excess phase present in one of the high-platinum-content alloys has been isolated and chemically analyzed and was found to consist almost wholly of platinum, gold, and copper, evidently derived from the compound AuCu, by the partial replacement of gold by platinum.

Based on full investigation of the characteristic of sphalerite in the residue obtained from cyanidation leaching process and the study of the mechanism of the interaction between flotation reagents and sphalerite with the aid of electrochemical analysis, the reagent named YO was developed for eliminating the depression effect of CN- on sphalerite and reducing the dosage of CuSO4. The achievements have been used in commercial production for the treatment of the cyanidation residue to recover the zinc minerals, obtaining a zinc concentrate with grade of 56.49% Zn and recovery of 86.63% Zn.

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

Tests of mine-roof models in a centrifuge show that the suspension effect due to bolting a horizontally bedded mine roof with frictionless surfaces of contact between beds depends principally on the number of bolted beds and their relative flexural rigidities, provided that sufficient bolt tension is exerted to prevent strata separations at the bolt locations. Strata separations tend to occur in the unbolted roof mainly because the beds have unequal thicknesses. "Suspension effect" refers to the transfer of part of the weight of weaker or thinner beds to the flexurally more rigid beds by roof bolts or by any other means. The factors investigated were number of beds in the bolted unit, bed thickness, modulus of elasticity of beds, length of bolts, spacing of bolts across and along the opening, bolt load, and intensity of roof load. The general principles of behavior of the bolted roof beds are explained by an approximate theory. Model test data are used to validate the theory and to obtain an expression for the "suspension efficiency". As the suspension effect actually observed in the models is smaller than that predicted by the approximate theory, the suspension efficiency in general is less than unity. Mathematical expressions are obtained for (1) the change in roof bending stress due to the suspension effect, which is needed for design of a roof-bolting system, (2) the change of roof deflection due to the suspension effect, which may be useful for evaluating the effectiveness of a roof-bolting system, and (3) the bolt load or pre-load that is required to achieve the desired reinforcing effect.

Large-scale continuous ?Resin-In-Pulp? process tests were conducted at Irgiredmet. The object for testing was the sample of oxidized gold ore from one of Siberian deposit. Weak-base ion ex-change resin PuroGold was used as adsorbent. The duration of ?Resin-In-Pulp? tests was sufficient for a completing of three cycles ?Adsorption/Elution?. Gold in feed was 0.95 mg/L. Gold in solid phase of adsorption tails? 0.065 g/t. Gold in liquid phase of adsorption tails? 0.026 mg/L. Total gold in adsorption tails ?0.11 g/t. Gold recovery ?94.3 %. The use of regenerated resin had practically no effect on gold losses with adsorption tails. Alkaline cyanide solution (NaCN-20g/L, NaOH- 5g/L) was used as eluent for gold elution from loaded resin. Elution temperature ?60 °C. Number of eluent bed volumes passed ?10. Loaded resin analysis was following (g/ton): Au? 1700~1250; Ag? 400~460; Cu? 250~450; Zn? 5100~9600; Fe? 860~1200. Elution efficiency: Au? 95.3%~97.8%; Ag? 84.0%~88.0%; Cu? 84.0%~88.0%; Zn? 97.0%~99.0%. Although high zinc resin loading was shown zinc was eluted efficiently. The adsorption properties of fresh PuroGold resin, PuroGold resin after 3 cycle ?Adsorp-tion-Elution?cycles in comparison with AM-2B resin were tested. It was shown from adsorption isotherms that selectivity of PuroGold resin slightly less in comparison with AM-2B resin mainly due to its higher zinc adsorption properties. It was founded on base of test results that adsorption properties of PuroGold resin was practically constant during three ?Adsorption/Elution? cycles. Gold may be efficiently recovered by resin tested. There were no difficulties during gold elution from loaded resin and its regeneration. PuroGold resin was recommended for industrial use in RIP process. Process design criteria were developed and plant design is on progress at the moment.

This paper documents a process of data analytics and machine learning applied to coalmine roof convergence data. It follows a publication documenting the formation of the database. For each set of analyses Python scripts were utilised to extract data from an SQL database, with subsequent analyses also executed in Python, utilising open-source tools such as scikit-learn. Preliminary analyses with classic machine learning algorithms included multiple logistic regression, K-nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, kernel support vector machine, artificial neural network (ANN), naïve Bayes and multiple linear regression. Results indicated that relationships were complex and non-linear, with the artificial neural network most suitable. An ANN model was then refined through a standard process of hyperparameter optimisation and data augmentation to arrive at a final model. Due to the black box nature of the ANN further insight into how the parameters interacted was sought and found with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP values). SHAP values utilise Game Theory, where each input parameter or feature is a ‘player’ while the data set is the ‘team’. The SHAP value is the impact of each player on the target value, essentially establishing the contribution of each input parameter. The results from all analyses are delivered in the paper, together with insights, applications, strengths, and limitations of the methodology.

The interactions of mineral-pyrite with T. ferrooxidans were studied by using a cyclic voltametry technique. The interactions with bacteria were carefully examined during the entire growth stage of bacteria (fermentation). Several very important discoveries were made. For example, the pyrite surface invariably drastically changed its properties at the second day of fermentation. Beyond two days of fermentation, the cyclic voltamograms were insensitive to convective diffusion produced by stirring. The SEM study revealed that bacteria populated the pyrite surface at an extremely high density levels. The high density of bacteria, and the solid reaction products formed on the pyrite surface created conditions for pore diffusion which explained why the CVs became insensitive to convective diffusion in solution (stirring).

The Crandon deposit, located in northern Wisconsin, is a 65.8 million ton Precambrian volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit which averages 1.4% copper and 5.8% zinc. The deposit is classic in origin, mineralogy and shape. Comprehensive understanding of the geology of both the deposit and the project site has been fundamental to the credibility and success of project feasibility studies and regulatory permit preparation. Mine development in the current investment and regulatory climate requires thorough and timely application of geologic tools. From 1977-1980 geologic activities were focused on the typical objectives of orebody delineation, reserve estimation, depositional geology, and general site investigation. Results from these programs formed the basis for the project's preliminary feasibility studies. Since 1981 further geologic investigations have provided criteria for project design, site management, and operational permitting. Activities have included mine entry position definition drilling, devel reserve modeling, large diameter (150 mm) core drilling for mill pilot samples, rock mechanics testing, and evaluation of the glacial overburden/deposit geohydrology for computer simulation.

"The aluminum industry is the 5th largest consumer of energy and the largest consumer of energy on a per-weight basis. Process heating accounts for 25% of the energy consumed to manufacture aluminum. Consequently, the generation of this energy results in the production of a significant amount of CO2 (over 3.75 million metric tons in 2003)1. As a result, the Aluminum Industry Technology Roadmap of 2003 listed the development of improved refractory materials as a goal to reduce energy use and decrease greenhouse gas creation. The result of a R&D effort addressing this desire is the development of patented microporous refractory materials for metal contact applications in all furnace areas including the belly band. It has been demonstrated that this material can reduce energy consumption up to 38% in furnaces and significantly reduce heat loss in launder and trough systems. Furthermore the material developed is non-wetting and remains un-penetrated by metal throughout its lifetime. The material does not contribute to the formation of corundum. As a result, the energy efficiency of an older lining remains intact compared to standard refractory materials which may have an initial high insulating value (such as lightweights and board) or standard dense refractory (even with penetration inhibitors) both of which show a rapid increase in thermal conductivity as the refractory is penetrated with aluminum and formed corundumIntroductionThe aluminum industry is the second largest producer of metal in the United States, behind the iron and steel industry. It is the 5th largest consumer of energy and the largest consumer of energy on a per-weight basis. Process heating is required to melt, hold, purify, alloy, and heat treat the metal and accounts for 25% of the energy consumed to manufacture aluminum. As such, process heating is the second largest energy consuming operation. Smelting, which utilizes an electrolytic reduction process is the largest energy consuming operation1.Most process heating is accomplished through the use of fossil fuels, either directly or indirectly. The choice of fuel is dependent on a plant’s location and fossil fuel availability. Table I shows the processes impacted by refractories and the calculated BTU’s generated by usage of the respective fuels as well as the Metric Tons (MT) of metal passed through each process in 20001."

An automated facility for non-destructive elemental analysis of mine samples has been developed and tested at Mount Isa in association with the CSIRO. The analysis is based on the prompt and delayed measurement of gamma radiation emitted by the sample during and after separate fast and thermal neutron irradiation. No sub-sampling or sample preparation is required and the analyser is operated by one person that would otherwise be splitting drill core in preparation for conventional analysis. The analyser has been calibrated to measure the following (precision in parenthesis): Ag (14 ppm), Pb (0.5 wt%), Zn (0.5 wt%), Cu (0.04 wt%), Fe (0.7 wt%), S (1.1 wt%), SiO2 (0.8 wt%), A1203 (0.07 wt%), Mn (0.05 wt%), specific gravity (0.02 g cmt). Crushed or whole drill core samples that range in size between 0.5 m and 1.8 m of equivalent BQ size drill core can be analysed at a rate of six samples per hour. If required, drill core samples can be re-packed in their original configuration for storage following analysis. Standard samples are measured every day to ensure operational stability. The analyser is controlled by a personal computer which prints the results and stores them along with the raw data on the computer hard disk. This paper reports the performance of the analyser during 1992 for routine analysis of drill core from the lead ore bodies of both Mount Isa and Hilton mines.

The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. A monitoring campaign to record dynamic pressures generated by detonation of a single blasthole was implemented at Barrick Gold´s Pueblo Viejo Open Pit mine (PVDC), located in the Dominican Republic. Pressure amplitudes beyond the dynamic compressive strength of the electronic detonator´s capsules have the potential to damage these electronic devices, generating misfires along with all the associated risks and entailed safety implications. In most instances, misfires generated from high dynamic pressures are a direct consequence of drilling deviations resulting in blasthole distances smaller than originally designed. Tourmaline Crystal Sensors specifically designed for high dynamic pressure measurements in aqueous media were selected to address the challenge. These sensors are custom-made and require additional instrumentation for proper operation, including signal conditioners and recording equipment capable of capturing simultaneous events, both in their amplitude and frequency components. Field-testing comprised detonation of a single blasthole using current explosive loading practices along with an arrangement of sensors positioned within water-filled drillholes in a spiral configuration. Distances, explosive weights and all 23 dynamic pressure record amplitudes are included along with additional data regarding arrival time and P-Wave velocity estimations. As with typical vibration models, the Scaled Distance concept (D/W1/2) was used to construct an attenuation model relating Dynamic Pressure as a function of Distance (D) and explosive Weight (W). The resulting model, adjusted to a 95% statistical confidence limit (covering 100% of the recorded data) was used to generate a series of curves (Abacus) estimating dynamic pressure as a function of distance for different explosive charges. These curves, in association with permissible pressure limits defined at 50% (FOS = 2) of the dynamic pressure strength reported by manufacturers for both, the 1000bar (Al) and the 1400bar (Cu) capsules; allow for the determination of critical (safe) distances between blastholes. Tests were implemented to cover a variety of field scenarios, accounting for different rock mass types, qualities and water conditions; however, preliminary analysis indicate the convenience of developing a unique trend that considers said variability. This approach allowed construction of a single, simple, unambiguous and operationally applicable design tool to address entailed safety issues.

A pilot plant study has been made of the liberation characteristics of a nickel ore under different milling conditions. A series of runs were made ranging from fully autogenous grinding to semi-autogenous grinding with a ball load of 8%. The mill products were sized and assayed then analysed by QEM4SEM. This enabled a full liberation analysis to be carried out to see whether the autogenous grinding leads to improved liberation by promoting selective breakage. Though it is frequently claimed that fully autogenous grinding yields superior liberation this could not be detected in the present study.

Os aços inoxidáveis ferríticos estabilizados com nióbio apresentam grãos mais refinados e uma recristalização mais homogênea quando comparados aos não estabilizados. Contudo, em seu processamento industrial, mais especificamente na laminação a quente, utiliza-se um recozimento antes da etapa de laminação a frio e do recozimento final, visando a homogeneização da microestrutura de entrada. Objetivando a melhoria das propriedades de estampagem e soldagem em aços com adição de Nb, bem como uma possível redução de custos com a eliminação do recozimento após a laminação a quente, foram realizados testes com o aço inoxidável 430 estabilizado com Nb de forma a acompanhar a evolução de sua microestrutura e textura após ser submetido à laminação a frio com 80% de redução e recozimento a tempo constante (900 s) e diferentes temperaturas, 400°C a 1.000°C, partindo-se de ambas condições iniciais. A quantificação da recristalização foi feita através da fração amaciada em função da temperatura, obtida pela curva de microdureza Vickers. A interpretação da textura foi obtida por exames por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de elétrons retroespalhados (EBSD). Para o encharque de 900 s, a recristalização se inicia a 700°C. A 750°C o aço se encontra completamente recristalizado, alcançando um tamanho de grão da ordem de 8,0 µm. Os resultados mostram que o aço não recozido após a laminação a quente apresentou grãos mais refinados e ligeiramente menores. Além disso, notou-se o aumento da fibra gama e redução da fibra alfa em ambas as condições de processamento à medida que a recristalização progredia.

Much of the data in mining operations come from a variety of systems, each with different databases and reporting environments. Standard technology deployments create a Bsilo-ification^ of data leading to poor system benefit. Through modern server monitoring and systematic approach, data utilization and value can quantifiably be measured. The Data Utilization and Value Index (DUVI) can quantify business intelligence best practices and user interaction. This study seeks to provide a data management tool to measure data utilization across the process of converting data into action.

The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .
