Devido crescente necessidade de elevação dos níveis de conformação em peças estampadas, existe uma demanda cada vez maior em ligas e processos diversificados que atendam as variadas exigências do setor de produtos estampados e posteriormente tratados termicamente para aumento de dureza. Desse modo desenvolveu-se a liga C80M (modificada), que é uma variante da liga C80U especificada na norma DIN EN ISO 4957 porém com adição de Cromo, entretanto a liga C80M ainda é pouco estudada e pouca informação técnica se tem a seu respeito. Com a finalidade de melhor conhecimento técnico dessa liga, foram conduzidos estudos de caracterização em amostras laminadas a quente e após processo de esferoidização posteriormente sendo revestidas com fosfato de zinco. Foram realizados estudos de composição química, microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas, além de levantamento da curva CLC através do método Nakazima em amostras com e sem revestimento de fosfato. Através dos resultados parciais encontrados, foi possível definir o lado da curva CLC relacionado ao estiramento da chapa bem como comparar o deslocamento e a força do punção no teste Nakazima conformando-se amostras esferoidizadas sem e com revestimento de fosfato.

This report presents a study on the use of computerized, continuous remote monitoring systems for fire and explosive atmosphere safety in underground coal mines. The effects of these systems on the safety level in mines are investigated, and the relationship between mine safety regulations and computerized, continuous, remote monitoring is analyzed.

ON giving thought to the subject of this paper, my first reaction was that many and striking changes have come about as a direct result of the war. However, more careful analysis indicates that few, if any, of these changes can be wholly attributed to it. The actual situation is that all these changes were conceived and most of them at least partially executed in re- cent prewar years, it remaining the role of war to achieve results in a fraction of the time that might normally have been taken, lacking its driving impulse. The further discussion will therefore be with the premise that the individual changes have been greatly hastened rather than directly and primarily caused by any war conditions. Co-operation among copper alloy producers on production problems is agreed to be much worth while. The industry was too long noted for jealousy and secrecy as to equipment, methods, and even materials produced. Gradually, a more open and co-operative policy evolved but even just prior to the war the interchange of ideas was relatively cautious and limited. The need for a great increase in production in record time fostered a more co- operative attitude; exchange of ideas and experience concerning all phases of production increased tremendously to the benefit of the individual participants and thus the war effort, too. This more united effort has undoubtedly led to many specific improvements in process or equipment and these in turn to more rapid and economical operation than could have taken place on an each-for-himself basis.

The warm southwestern desert of Arizona is an ideal location for ASARCO's new Sacaton Unit. The climate of this arid region played a major role in the design considerations of the Unit's crushing and concentrating facilities. Low yearly rainfall and relatively high yearly temperatures are a combination that was taken advantage of when designing the surface facilities. The plantsite, located due west of the mine pit, is in an area originally covered with sparse desert vegetation, underlain to an average depth of 125 feet by desert alluvium. The entire plantsite area slopes gently to the southwest at approximately 1%. Ground conditions at the plantsite area were not acceptable for construction due to the collapsability of the wetted soil when under loaded conditions, Overburden from the pit area was used to form the foundation for the entire plantsite. This waste material, entirely devoid of rock, was placed and compacted to an elevation approximately 20 feet above the desert floor. Elevating the plantsite by filling with waste material not only provided an adequate construction foundation but also eliminated the possibility of flooding from run-off in the surrounding desert areas.

This report documents the work performed and the results obtained during the field demonstration of the Remote Sealing System at the USBM's Jenny Mine near Inez, KY in the Fall of 1978. Although various portions of the Remote Sealing System had been used on a number of prior occasions, the field demonstration at Jenny Mine marked the first use of the complete upgraded system including the use of the inert gas generating system for seal placement and the first application of the new froth foam system. The objective of the field demonstration at Jenny Mine was to demonstrate the complete system by emplacing and evaluating several complete underground seals under conditions representing those of a mine fire situation. Several critical sealing conditions were identified including: ? High entry airflow ? Standing water (1 to 2 ft) in the entry ? Flowing water (150 gal/min) ? Irregular roof ? Sealing a 4-way intersection. Four seals were successfully placed under the conditions mentioned above. The demonstration served to verify proposed techniques to handle these conditions as well as to dispel any doubts about the system's capabilities. As a result of the successful field demonstration, the Remote Sealing Equipment is now under the jurisdiction of MSHA's Mine Emergency Operation ready for a mine fire emergency.

A ventilation research study was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and a cooperating trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming, USA. The mine operation uses the longwall mining method in trona bed 17, a commonly mined unit in the region. The longwall face length is 228 m (750 ft), and caving on the face occurred up to the back of the longwall shields. The mine is ventilated using a main blowing fan and a bleeder shaft. For this study, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was released in two separate monitoring experiments. For the first experiment, tracer gas was released on the face, this test focused on airflow along the longwall face of the active panel. Face test showed the airflow patterns to be more complex than just head-to-tail flow in the main ventilation air stream on the active panel. For the second experiment, tracer gas was released 2 crosscuts inby the face on the headgate side, this test focused on gas transport in the mined-out portion of the same active panel. Gob test showed a pathway of movement through the front of the active panel gob that moved outby from the tailgate corner. The primary pathway of tracer gas movement in the active panel gob was towards the headgate and tailgate bleeders and out of a bleeder shaft. The rate of movement towards the back of the gob was measured to be 0.19 m/s (37 fpm).

Minutes As the minutes of the General Meeting held on the 17th November, 1970 had not yet been published in the Journal, the Chairman moved that the adoption and discussion thereof be deferred to the next General Meeting. This motion was adopted unanimously. Office-bearers The Chairman informed the meeting that this branch had received the resignation of Mr J. N. Saunders. Following his resignation the Committee elected the following office-bearers: Chairman - Mr G. Y. Nisbet Vice Chairman - Mr J. M. Meyer The Chairman also announced that Messrs. J. M. Meyer and G. J. C. Young had been co-opted onto the Committee. General Members were advised that arrangements had been made for the Cookhouse Tunnel visit towards the end of March. Talk by J. Freer The Chairman called on Mr J. Freer to deliver his talk on "Uranium Extraction, Processing and Conversion for Fuel Element Manufacture". The presentation of this talk, illustrated by sketches, proved very interesting and entertaining and was received with applause from all present. Mr I. Thomas proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Freer on behalf of all members of the O.F.S. Branch. After thanking Mr Freer for his talk and all present for their attendance, the Chairman declared the meeting closed at 9.30 p.m.

The valuation of early-stage exploration projects requires a valuer to take into account a large number of uncertain value drivers, the interplay among which may be non-linear. This paper examines some of the key value drivers including geology, target metrics, project area and maturity, the market and the psychology behind the decision-making process. The commonly accepted valuation methods and their underlying logic are outlined, including a view on why they evolved, what value drivers they attempt to address and their potential shortcomings. These methods include the multiple of exploration expenditure, geoscience rating, expected values and market based methods. The potential future valuation methods of replacement values and neural networks are also introduced along with how to minimise heuristic bias and error within the market-based approach.CITATION:Bell, J A and Guj, P, 2012. CORRELATION was made between the heat treatment and hardness of three U-Ti alloys ranging in composition from 8.5 to 50 atomic pct Ti. The following important observations were made: 1) A direct quench of y U-Ti solid solution resulted in the formation of a hard martensitic phase in low-titanium alloys. 2) Subsequent tempering initially increased the hardness by the precipitation of a fine dispersion of U2Ti; further precipitation of U2Ti with tempering time eventually resulted in softening. 3) High-hardness levels were obtained also by isothermal transformation of an 8.5 atomic pct Ti alloy at 400º and 500°C. 4) The crystal structure of the phases present at the solution-treating temperature (one region in the phase diagram excepted) and the temperature within a given phase region affected the hardness of both quenched and isothermally transformed alloys. Introduction It has been known since 1887 that the mechanical properties of metals were dependent upon their microstructure. Sorby pointed out in that year that annealed gray iron castings were softer than chilled iron castings by virtue of the graphite which had replaced hard cementite in the microstructure. Over the years, interest has increased in the effect of microstructure on the mechanical properties of metals, and now high-strength levels may be achieved by bringing about the dispersion of a second phase or by other microstructural adjustments. The nature of a second phase in an alloy strongly influences the properties. For example, the size, shape, amount, and distribution of a second phase plays a very important role in the ultimate properties of an alloy. Microstructural control is achieved by heat treatments. Hence, any alloy system of potential use should be understood in terms of its response to heat treatment and the resultant effects upon the properties.

Dissemination of selenium and tellurium in sulphide minerals results in the contamination of pregnant leach solutions and electrolytes in the hydrometallurgical treatment of sulphide ores and residues. The selenium and tellurium content of the copper sulphate-sulfuric acid solution may be reduced into insoluble precipitates of copper selenides and tellurides using cuprous ion. This study presents the use of the thermodynamics and kinetics for the removal process of selenium and tellurium in real life application. Dominant species of selenium and tellurium in acidic copper sulfate solutions were identified and the reduction rates of species were compared. The findings were applied to industrial conditions by modeling the Vale’s CRED (Sudbury, Canada) plant’s selenium and tellurium purification circuit. Rate reducing factors on selenium and tellurium removal were identified and discussed.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE practice of carbonizing steel for the purpose of case-hardening has assumed great commercial importance within the past, 10 years. Formerly, case-hardened steel was held in more or less contempt, since it. was considered a cheap substitute for tool-steel. This is no longer the case. The development of the motor-car industry, and coincidentally that of modern alloy-steels, has resulted in overcoming many difficulties formerly experienced in case-hardening. This result has been accomplished by increased knowledge regarding the analysis of the steel which would respond most readily to case-hardening, and by more careful methods of treatment of the carbonized steel. The ordinary method of carbonizing consists in packing the steel with the carbonizing-material in cast-iron boxes and placing them in a furnace at a temperature of from 1,500° to 1,900° F. for a time sufficient to give the required depth of cc case." The steel is then either quenched directly from the box, or is allowed to cool without unpacking, and finally given a single hardening-heat., or, for special work, two or three heats. During the year 1911, more than 100,000 tons of carbonizing-material was sold in the United States, at an average price of probably $55 per ton. More than 85 per cent. of this material consisted of granulated bone. Within the past four years, many manufactured compounds have been placed on the market, consisting largely of some form of carbon or carbonaceous material, with or without the addition of chemicals. Steel will absorb carbon placed in contact with it at the temperature of the atmosphere. The reaction is exceedingly slow, but. increases rapidly with increasing temperature. The properties of a geologic mass may be considered from a resource or an engineering viewpoint. The primary engineering applications include ground control, excavation, bulk handling, and hydrology. This study will focus upon these areas in descending order. For an adequate geologic description, data is necessary on the following components: (1) the intact rock, (2) geologic structures, (3) contained fluids, and (4) existing pressures and temperatures, see Table 1. This information, combined with the engineering specifications, provides the basis for a formal geotechnical analysis as illustrated in Figure 1. For a structural analysis it is essential to establish the mechanical properties of the material composing the structure. This material, termed the "rock mass," consists mainly of the first two geologic components, the intact rock and geologic structures (Figure 1) Consideration of fluids will be subordinated to their role as chemical agents affecting the mechanical properties. The existence of pressures and temperatures generally lies beyond the scope of this study.

More than 500 fires are now burning in abandoned coal waste banks and coal deposits in the United States. Once established, such fires can burn for decades, and extinguishing them by conventional methods such as surface sealing to exclude air, excavation to remove fuel, or flushing to cool the fire zone is usually difficult and always expensive. Burnout Control, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines for the control of abandoned fires, involves the accelerated combustion of coal in place with total management of the heat and fumes produced. A burning waste bank or mine is placed under negative pressure relative to the atmosphere, and heat and combustion products are drawn from the combustion zone through an exhaust ventilation system. Heat produced appears as sensible heat in the exhaust, at temperatures as high as 1,000° C (1,832° F), and can be recovered for the production of steam, hot water, process heat, or electricity. The Bureau's first field demonstration of Burnout Control was at Calamity Hollow in Allegheny County, PA (near Pittsburgh). Calamity Hollow was the site of an underground mine in the 1900's and was surface mined in the 1940's. In the winter of 1961-62, a fire of undetermined origin was discovered in the exposed coal. In 1963, the Bureau constructed a trench barrier around the fire and a surface seal over the affected area. The fire was isolated, but not completely extinguished. In 1979, when the Bureau began work on the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project, to demonstrate controlled burnout, the fire was still smoldering on the hot side of the trench barrier. The project, which was begun in December 1979 and ended in July 1982, consisted of the design, construction, operation, and subsequent dismantling of a Burnout Control ventilation system. This report is the fourth in a five-part series that describes the Calamity Hollow Mine Fire Project. The first report, part 1, describes the design and construction of the field installation. Part 2 will present the results of a continuous 4-month burnout operation. (Because part 2 involves the analysis of a substantial body of data, it will not be published until after publication of parts 3, 4, and 5). Part 3 describes the instrumentation used to control and monitor the progress of the burnout operation. This part (part 4) and part 5 both deal with the closeout phase of the field demonstration. The quenching of the fire is described in this report, and part 5 will describe the final excavation and backfilling of the heated zones. The reports in this series document the Calamity Hollow controlled burnout demonstration, which showed that (1) controlled in situ combustion is a feasible method for controlling underground fires in abandoned mines, (2) the resultant thermal exhaust output is sufficient for energy utilization, and (3) water injection with fume exhaustion is a potentially effective method for cooling large underground fire zones. Further trials of both Burnout Control and water injection with fume exhaustion are planned.

A compound stability diagram was constructed by the Bureau of Mines for the Zn-Fe-S-O system to show the phases that should be thermodynamically stable at various temperatures, oxygen pressures, and SO2 pressures. The diagram was demonstrated to have good qualitative value for predicting stable phases that may, in turn, be related to the recovery of zinc in the leaching phase of the electrolytic zinc process. The study showed that roasting temperature is the most Significant variable in preventing roaster formation of zinc ferrite, which is directly related to subsequent extraction of zinc in the leaching step.

Most of the coal reserves in India are of drift origin and have very poor washability characteristics and a high level of near gravity materials. At least 30 new coal wash plants are expected to be set up in the next 5years.In such a scenario, adequate sampling followed by sink float test work for washability analysis becomes very critical for designing these new plants. For coal sampling purpose, stipulations of different standards are sometimes formidable and on the border of ?impracticality?; sometimes are self contradictory in terms of gross sample weight vis-a-vis minimum number of particles required in each size fraction and in each relative density fraction and also the minimum mass in the latter. Validation of the generated data is another important aspect of washability analysis. These issues can easily be addressed by using straight forward mathematical relationships, well known RR plots and by using simple MS Excel tool, etc.

American Indian lands contain a vast amount of renewable and non-renewable resources that have consequently been mined (Smith and Frehner). Therefore, it is understandable that tribes are concerned about environmental impacts from mining and their ability to minimize and mitigate these impacts. This has created a need to better understand mining and its environmental impacts. The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program Mining educational modules developed educational modules for tribal colleges focusing on environmental impacts of mining, remediation of mining wastes, and sociocultural impacts of mining. Educational modules are independently packaged units of study designed to enhance the learning process and can be modified and adapted to different learning scenarios and objectives. In addition to providing specialized knowledge, the modules feature hands-on activities, incorporation of technology, student involvement, discussion, and exchange of ideas. Modules will aim incorporate traditional ecological knowledge and approaches that promote effective science learning for native students. Modules are designed to augment existing associates of science programs (e.g. biology, chemistry) currently offered at tribal colleges and can be modified for use in K-12 education and for non-tribal audiences.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

"Currently construction of important structures like bridges, flyovers and high rise buildings in and around Kolkata are in full swing. These structures have mostly pile or well foundations. The design methodology and construction techniques are being employed keeping in view both the safety and economy of the project. The data presented in this investigation have been taken from Geotechnical Investigation report of Component B in connection with construction of Extradosed Cable Stayed Bridge over River Hooghly in Hooghly and Nadia district of West Bengal, India. The investigation site is located within close proximity of Eocene Hinge Zone which is being taken as the principal contributor of Earthquakes in and around Kolkata. Considering the importance of the project detailed and exhaustive geotechnical investigation has been carried out and site specific response spectra have been generated for analysis and design of the bridge. This paper presents site specific response spectra, liquefaction analysis and comparison of lateral load carrying capacity of pile using Winkler approach and IS 2911 guidelines.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are used to transfer the load of the super structure through soft soil deposit to deeper bearing stratum by means of skin friction or end bearing or both. Pile foundations are regarded as a safe alternative for supporting structures in seismic areas and have been used for this purpose in non-liquefying as well as liquefying soils. But their design in case of potentially liquefiable soil is quite different from that of non liquefiable soil. In liquefiable soil the progressive buildup of excess pore water pressure will cause stiffness degradation and loss of strength which in turn will induce additional shear force and bending moment in the pile. The mechanism of pile behavior in liquefying soil has been investigated by several investigators in the recent years based on observations of pile performance during earthquakes and studies in the centrifuge and Shake Table tests. Exhaustive geotechnical investigation has been carried out along the proposed alignment of the Extradosed Cable Stayed Bridge i.e., along Baropara, Bansberia ROB, Ishwar Gupta Bridge, Saraswati River to collect disturbed as well as undisturbed soil sample, to develop average soil profile and to determine the design parameters. The proposed project site is very close to Eocene Hinge Zone, which is basically a strike slip fault, capable of generating an earthquake of Mw 6.7. Thus it is evident that the proposed Bridge needs to be designed considering the adverse geo-hydrological condition as well as the earthquake aspects needing special attention following the state-of-the-art technology as guided by relevant codes and published literatures. Considering the soil profile of these locations ground response analysis has been carried out using equivalent linear method to determine the site amplification. Site specific response spectra have been developed for the four zones and zone factors have been determined. The computed zone factors are 0.198g, 0.195g, 0.195g and 0.20g for the four zones respectively, much higher than the zone factor 0.16g, which is for zone III, as stipulated in IS 1893:2002."

Despite the four-decade study on ultrasound’s (US) impact on mineral’s floatabilities, there is still not clarity regarding its role in mineral surface wettability. For this purpose, the present investigation endeavours ……the hydrophobicity and floatability characteristics of a chalcopyrite-pyrite-quartz (Cp- Py-Qtz) system in the presence and absence of an ultrasonic pre-treatment. The ultrasonic process was carried out by a sonopuls at a constant frequency of 20 kHz with an adjustable power level from 30 to 200 W. Initially, the impact of sonication time (15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 s as well as 10, 20 and 30 min) and power magnitude (30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 W) were evaluated while the dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity and pH were also monitored. Collector-less micro-flotation tests were carried out on the non-pre-treated and the US pre-treated samples at 60 W and 15 s. The samples’ hydrophobicities were determined by the drop shape analysis approach. The dissolved-oxygen level was varied using a mini bench pressurised water reactor to study the effect of O2(aq) concentration on the chalcopyrite and pyrite wettability characteristics. The results showed that the minerals’ hydrophilicities were relatively more sensitive to the sonication’s time than its power that resulted in reducing all three minerals’ hydrophobicities. In addition, it was found that the dissolved-oxygen content and creation of sub-micron sized bubbles led to an improvement on chalcopyrite and pyrite hydrophobicities. Finally, we proved that the Cp’s floatability increased and Qtz’s recovery reduced while being subjected to the ultrasonic irradiation (15 s at 60 W); however, Py’s recovery remained constant. This conclusion confirmed the possibility of a selective separation in ultrasound-assisted copper ore flotation. We recommend that further advanced investigations be conducted, using an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to thoroughly understand the surface modifications induced by the ultrasonication

This case study provides an example of how social marketing was applied to meet the needs of business customers. Federal regulations require that all companies develop a written program to track hazardous chemicals at their sites. The HazCom Writer, created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is a software tool designed to help companies prepare their required Hazard Communications (HazCom) written plan and list all hazardous chemicals at the company&apos;s worksite. The social marketing goal was to provide a product for small- to medium-sized companies to use for federal HazCom rule compliance. The HazCom Wm&apos;ter is a direct NIOSH response to customer and stakeholder needs (including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the mining community, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration- regulated companies).
