Após a edição da RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC, diretiva que entrou em vigor em 1º de julho 2006 proibindo a utilização de seis substâncias perigosas: chumbo, mercúrio, cádmio, cromo hexavalente, bifenilos polibromados e éteres difenil-polibromados, fabricantes de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos passaram a utilizar soldas livres de chumbo (lead free) para montagem de suas placas de circuito impresso. A SAC 305 é um tipo de solda muito utilizada pelas empresas fabricantes de placas de circuito impresso. O presente trabalho visa caracterizar este tipo de solda verificando sua composição e identificar se a mesma se encontra livre de elementos perigosos ao ambiente. Avaliou-se a extração de metais como Ag e Sn através de digestão ácida em água-régia e rota HNO3 a temperatura ambiente. A composição do licor lixiviado foi caracterizada por espectrometria de emissão óptica com acoplamento de plasma induzido (ICP-OES). Os resultados indicam que a solda SAC 305 atende a RoHS, possui 2,7% Ag, 96,4% Sn e 0,9% de outros metais e a melhor rota para extração de Ag foi a HNO3 e para Sn foi a água-régia.

A proposta desta pesquisa foi desenvolver uma metodologia que empregasse radiação gamae a técnica de “Cross-Correlation” para medir a velocidade das pelotas de minério no duto. Uma unidade experimental foi projetada e construída para realizar simulações de fluxos de duas fases, usando um medidor de fluxo, instalado externamente ao tubo, consistindo em dois sistemas independentes, cada um composto por uma fonte 241Am de radiação gama (59,62 keV de energia) e um detector cintilador NaI (1 x 1 "). Estes sistemas estavam localizados no mesmo plano vertical e separados por uma distância de cerca de 18,0 cm. Como Pelotas, foram produzidos corpos de prova de composição distinta a fim de obter um espectro de densidades para verificar a validade da metodologia. Os resultados mostraram que o uso da densitometria gama associado com a medição do coeficiente de "Cross- Correlation” permitiu calcular o tempo transiente entre dois sinais e assim, calcular a velocidade da pelota.

"Heap bioleaching is an unsaturated hydrometallurgical extraction process which is commonly applied to the recovery of copper from low grade sulfide ores as well as for preparatory treatment of gold ores. The leaching reactions occur in the liquid phase, catalysed by iron and/or sulfur oxidising micro-organisms. Contact of the mineral grains with the leaching solution is consequently essential for metal recovery. Additionally, the liquid is responsible for the transport of the liberated metal out of the heap under gravitation-driven flow. However, the highly inhomogeneous structure of the heaps coupled with low irrigation rates cause the flow to vary between being gravitationally and capillary dominated, resulting in non-uniform wetting of the ore. In this study a 132 kg agglomerated ore ‘slice’ is used to examine the effect of liquid distribution on microbial colonisation and mineral recovery in a long term bioleach (> 500 days) when irrigation from a single drip emitter source is employed. The novel setup enabled sample collection from ports positioned along the length and height of the ore bed, so that 2D maps of the degree of wetting and microbial colonisation could be generated at different times in the leach. Lateral movement of the liquid increased with bed depth; the majority of flow was below the irrigation point while the top corner of the bed that was not irrigated remained the driest region of the heap throughout the experiment duration. The lowest cell numbers were also recorded in the driest regions. Specifically, cell numbers in the top corner of the bed, 400mm from the irrigation point, remained at undetectable levels until the 283rd day measurement, in line with typical heap operation durations. This indicates that slow colonisation of the heap in the regions between irrigation points may be a significant issue in heap optimisation."

To analyze the direct reduction of self-reducting briquettes producted with different electric arc furnace dust contents, three sets of homogeneous mixtures were produced with elephant grass biomass, iron ore, cement and furnace dust in increasing levels, which were submitted to thermogravimetric tests in muffle furnace and TGA furnace at variable temperatures and times. The curves of degree of reduction were obtained and the reduced briquettes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the reducibility of the agglomerates is diminished by the increase of furnace dust, with variations of this result at higher temperatures. The observed microstructures were spherical particles, porous structure or whiskers. Based on XRD results, it was considered probable that the decrease of the degree of reduction with the increase of furnace dust content is related to the reaction between hematite and zincite, which is expected to be controlled by zinc diffusion.

Sixteen elements were determined spectrochemically in the general range of 3 to 1,000 ppm in high - purity columbium . Samples were converted thermally to Cb2 O , mixed with graphite and Ge02 , and excited for 15 seconds using a 15 - ampere dc arc . For the molybdenum determination , the oxidized samples were mixed with NaCl and Geo₂ and excited for 30 seconds . Spectra were recorded on photographic plates , and spectral line transmittance values were measured photometrically . Relative - intensity ratios of selected analytical and internal standard spectral lines were plotted against concentrations of standards to form curves from which concentrations of impurities were read . Average precision of the method was 11.2 percent relative standard deviation .

The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the effects of adding manganese compounds and ores to iron ore pellets. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, sulfate and chloride, plus six manganiferous ores from the Minnesota Cuyuna Range were tested as additives to increase the manganese content of iron ore pellets. One to 5 percent manganese, as a compound or ore, was added to five magnetite concentrates and one hematite concentrate. These concentrates were ballad, indurated (1,300° C), and tested for reducibility. Manganese sulfate and chloride were unsatisfactory additives causing cracking and degradation of the pellets during reduction. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, and the ores were satisfactory additives. The additives increased pellet compression strengths with a corresponding loss of reducibility, as compared to the pellets without manganese additions. The changes in compression strengths and reducibility were caused by the formation of Jacobite spinel and slag within the pellets. However, when the induration temperature was lowered from 1,300° to 1,200° C the reducibility and compression strengths were comparable to the pellets without manganese additions indurated at 1,300° C.

"The effect of yttrium addition on the oxidation behavior of Fe3Al intermetallic compound was investigated in the range of temperature 800 to 1100 °C in 0.2 atm 02 in terms of oxidation rate and oxide adhesion. The oxidation rate of alloys, Fe-14.3 wt% Al and Fe-14.1 wt% Al-0.3 wt% Y, was nearly identical and the parabolic rate constant calculated as a function of temperature is Kp=5128 exp[-39506(cal/mol)/RT] mg2/cm4 hr.Rapid cooling and ultrasonic stress tests were carried out to test adhesion of scale formed on the alloys. While the oxide layer formed on the Fe-Al alloy without Y was found to be fragile and detached easily during the tests, the oxide layer formed on the Fe-Al alloy containing Y was protective, dense, and adhesive. The following two mechanisms were proposed to explain the adhesion improvement of Ah03 formed on the Fe3Al containing yttrium : (1) the addition of yttrium decrease generation of growth stress in alumina scale because the preferential diffusion of yttrium through grain boundary in alumina scale prevent internal oxidation of Al, one of main causes of growth stress, and (2) the second phase formed on the oxide scales prevents crack propagation through the scales, leading to better mechanical stability of the oxide scales.IntroductionIron aluminides have attracted the attention of many researchers as a candidate for use at high temperature because of their excellent oxidation resistance due to the formation of protective alumina scale. In order to resist aggressive environments at elevated temperatures, oxide scale formed on iron-uluminum alloy must satisfy the following three requirements : (1) thermodynamic stability (2) slow growth rate (3) adherence on substrate. According to Wallwork and Hed [l], the most suitable alloys for high temperature application are Fe, Ni, and Co alloys with the protection of Si02, Cr203, and Ah03 scales. While chromium oxide can vaporize as Cr03 above 1000 °C and silicon oxide may form low melting silicate [2,3], Alz03 has a high melting point and is the most stable among the three oxides thermodynamically [6]. In this respect, iron aluminides forming alumina seem to be most suitable for use at high temperature. However, alumina scale formed on the iron aluminum alloys tends to be easily spalled during oxidation due to the combination of growth stress and thermal stress."

This paper examines innovation in relation to the availability of anew material: the metal titanium. The paper aims to highlight the need for the inclusion of entrepreneurial innovation as a necessary focus area in the development of a titanium metal value chain. Both the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) have identified the creation of titanium metals production capabilities as a key growth area for South Africa. Using historical literature as a source of data, the activities of selected innovators who used titanium metal as a central component in their success, were investigated. The origin of the process innovation behind the titanium metals industry, and two titanium product innovations: namely, medical implants and sporting goods, were detailed as case studies. It was found that individual innovators were responsible for the creation, and rapid growth, of the titanium industry and titanium product applications. There is a need to link the current research and development into titanium metals production with individuals and organizations capable of commercializing innovative processes and products.

MAGNESIUM metal, with a specific gravity of 1.73, is two-thirds the weight of aluminium and one-quarter that of steel. It is the lightest metal which is stable in the atmosphere. Before the war it had begun, though somewhat slowly, to take a place among the established metals. In 1939, magnesium production on this continent amounted to some 3,000 tons per annum and was confined to one company. At that time, Germany produced perhaps 20,000 tons. The advent of war, however, increased the demand to fantastic heights and introduced production problems of unprecedented magnitude. By the end of 1943, North American production is expected to reach 300,000 tons per annum (1), an increase of one hundredfold. Such a rate of expansion has not been witnessed previously in the history of metallurgy. It has given the metallurgist an opportunity to try new production methods and to learn in a short time what might otherwise have taken many years. The metallurgy of magnesium is still in its formative years and at this time widely different production methods are in operation side by side. This paper will discuss these methods in so far as information is available for publication at this time. A general description of the new Canadian industry will be included.

The velocities of the three possible modes of elastic-wave Propagation have been calculated for single-crystal aluminum at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard steveographic triangle. The results are presented as isospeed contours. The deviations between the direction of maximum energy propagation and specirzen axes are presented as arrows drawn within the standard triangle. The orientation factors associated with dislocation nzotion on the primary slip system only and also on all twelve slip systenzs have been calculated for all three elastic waves. The orientation factors associated with a longitudinal standing--7aue resonant specivnen hazle also been calculated. The relevance of these results to ultrasonic attenuation measurements is discussed. DUE to the widespread use of ultrasonics in the investigation of the properties of solids a number of authors15 have discussed in detail the theory of elastic-wave propagation in solids. In this paper the modes of wave propagation are evaluated according to the procedure suggested by reeen' for the case of single-crystal aluminum at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The wave speeds are presented in the form of contour diagrams within the standard triangle. The deviations between the direction of maximum energy propagation and the normals to the wave fronts are presented as arrows drawn within the standard triangle. The orientation-de pendent factors (orientation factors) associated with dislocation damping as derived in the preceding paper6 have been calculated for the case of aluminum at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard triangle. The orientation factors for dislocation motion on the primary slip system only and on all twelve slip systems are presented in the form of contour diagrams, for both the traveling- and the standing-wave conditions. The relevance of these results to ultrasonic attenuation measurements is discussed. ELASTIC-WAVE PROPAGATION Three waves can be propagated in a linear elastic homogeneous anisotropic medium. Magnesite and dolomite are two salt-type minerals. The surface characteristics of these two minerals are almost the same. It is very difficult to remove dolomite from magnesite ores by flotation process. The present study was performed to develop a new collector and a better flotation scheme for magnesite from dolomite. The flotation tests show that there exists a significant difference in flotability between magnesite and dolomite when dodecyl phosphate synthesised with dodecanol, phosphorus oxychloride and other chemicals is used as collector. Sodium silicate was used as the modifier to improve flotation selectivity. It was found that sodium silicate selectively depressed magnesite at pH 4.5 - 7.5. The separation of magnesite from dolomite was achieved in a reverse flotation which resulted in a 76.1 per cent yield of magnesite with a grade of 47.3 per cent at 100 ppm dodecyl phosphate and 75 ppm sodium silicate. The flotation mechanism was investigated by characterising surface electrical properties and measuring the adsorption density of the reagents on magnesite and dolomite.

Today the BOF filter dusts and sludges are mainly dumped due to their zinc contents. By typically ranging from 2 to 5 % they prevent the filter dusts and sludges from beeing recycled via the blast furnace route. Based on the different discharge kinetics of Iron and zinc during the main blowing period In a bottom stirred BOF a simple and efficient system for recovery allow zinc fractions has been developed. The obtained material Is suitable for recycling without nsc of shell formation In the blast furnace. Different subsequent development steps have been performed. By starling with a very simple lime dependent model the sludge from the BOF off gas cleaning system was collected in two different sludge channel systems. This model based an the fact that most of the scrap based zinc Is discharged from the melt within the first eight to ten minutes of the BOF process. To Improve the system a spectroscope zinc sensor was Installed at the hot section of the off gas cleaning system to get more reliable informations on the actual zinc concentation of the BOF dust. By use of the system up to 50 % of the BOF sludge can be recycled.

Partial descriptions of the operation of the St. Joseph Lead Company's Joseph-town smelter have been published. In, 1936 the electrothermic production of zinc oxide was described;' in 1939 appeared a description2 of the electrothermic method of producing zinc metal. Inasmuch as the plant capacity has more than doubled, and in view of the fact that operating practices have improved greatly since these publications, it seems worth while to prepare a fresh description of the present-day elec-trothermic zinc plant and practice. Josephtown smelter is situated on the south side of the Ohio River about 3 miles below its confluence with the Beaver River. In addition to river barge, the smelter is served by Pennsylvania state highway No. 18 and by a spur line of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (N.Y.C.). A recent extension of this spur line connects with the Pennsylvania Railroad. As originally contemplated the plant was to handle only the product of the com-pany's own mines in St. Lawrence County, New york, but owing to the incessant demand for zinc and zinc oxide, it has been necessary to supplement New York concentrates with foreign ores (principally from Quebcc and the Argentine). The general operational procedure followed comprises roasting the sulphide con-centrates, converting the sulphur dioxide into sulphuric acid, preparation of a strong-structure sinter from the calcine, crushing &lid sizing of coke, reduction of coke-sinter mixture by electrothermic means, condensation of the evolved zinc vapor to make zinc metal or burning of the zinc vapor to make zinc oxide, collection and packing of the zinc oxide. Dusts recovered by the roaster and sinter Cottrells are treated in the leach plant for separation of lead sulphate, cadmium metal and zinc sulphate. The general flowsheet is shown in Fig. I. THERE are, broadly speaking, three classes of refractories: acid, basic, and neutral. Fireclay, diaspore, silica, and the sillimanite group of minerals are included in the acid class, which for the most part are not very resistant to basic slags. The neutra! class includes chrome, graphite, and silicon carbide, while most important in the basic class are magnesite and dolomite. Although chrome is a neutral refractory, it has no sharp distinction from magnesitic refractoriness. The two are mineralogically (1) and chemically related, and there is available on the market a complete range of brick from straight chrome to straight magnesite. In many indus trial applications, one. type may be replaced by another. The present paper is confined entirely to such refractories. "The purpose of this study is to evaluate the rock mass stability around the tunnels by three-dimensional (3-D) numerical modeling. Complex geological and tunnel features have been included in the model using the software package 3DEC™. Based on the available information on stratigraphy, geological structures, and mechanical properties of rock masses and discontinuities from the underground mine, 3-D stress analyses were performed on various cases with different K0 (lateral stress ratio) values, constitutive models, as well as support systems. Relations between these factors and the distributions of stress, displacement, and failure zones around the tunnels were obtained and discussed. Finally, comparisons between the field deformation measurements and numerical simulations are used as validations for the simulations, helping to determine the appropriate K0 value and material constitutive models for the underground mine.INTRODUCTIONThe case study site is an underground mine in the USA with a monthly ore production between 20,000 and 30,000 tons. The regional geology of the mine is structurally and stratigraphically complex. Rocks in the area include carbonaceous mudstone and limestone, tuffaceous mudstone and limestone, polylithic megaclastic debris flows, fine-grained debris flows and basalts, all part of the Cambrian-Ordovician Comus formation and related dikes. Both the mineralization and faults have general orientations striking N-S to NW-SE with high dip angles. The ore body in the mine has an incline of about 25---45 degrees located in relatively low quality rock; hence, cut-and-fill mining has been used.This underground mine has two vertical shafts used for ventilation, ore hoisting, and for personnel and material transportation. Development drifts were designed and driven to extract and transport the ore, as shown in Figure I. Bolts, mesh, and shotcrete have been applied in this mine for ground control. In order to reach various locations, the tunnel system is designed with different heading directions and inclines, which will be described in detail later. The area selected for modeling is a cubic region including all the tunnels inside the black square (Figure 1)."

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1931 was 30, a decrease of 20 fatalities or 40 per cent from the number killed in 1930. As a result of the decrease in the number of fatalities for 1931, the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry reached its lowest point in nine years. Although reductions in personnel--which permitted the retention of a select and experienced class of workmen, decreased active field-development work, and curtailed production--undoubtedly have had a marked effect on reducing the number of fatalities in 1931, the decrease also has resulted from continued accident-prevention efforts. Statistics show that a direct relationship exists between development activity and the number of men accidentally killed in the drilling and producing division of the California petroleum industry. For example, when the average number of drilling wells in 1930 was 29 per cent less than in 1929, the number of men accidentally killed at drilling wells dropped 48 per cent; and when the average number of drilling wells in 1931 decreased 52 per cent from 1930, the number of fatalities at drilling wells decreased 58 per cent. The relationship between field-development work and fatality frequency is significant because each year at least 50 per cent of all the fatalities in the California petroleum industry occur in the drilling and producing division. This relationship should serve to guide the accident-prevention efforts of the industry, especially in the drilling and producing division, toward checking an increase in fatal accidents when development activity again takes an upward trend.

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. The Morning Star Gold Mine has operated over a 101-year period, producing gold from narrow quartz veins and sulfide stockworks hosted mainly within a dioritic-gabbroic dyke. The deposit has been developed over a vertical depth of 980 m with drilling extending the vertical depth to greater than 1200 m. Currently there is a total Inferred Resource of 4.6 million tonnes at a grade of 6 g/t for 910 000 ounces of contained gold resources, which comprises an underground project and a surface project. Significant variation exists between the grade of drill core intersections and that observed in face sampling and subsequent production reconciliation (250 - 650 per cent). Studies were carried out on ten major production reefs, where the grades of drill intercepts were compared with face samples collected during development and mining. The implications of this study have been used as justification to assign production or stope/development grades where applicable to resources that are direct extensions of the historical development headings. Grade assignment and its impact on sensitivity for gold resources are detailed and show a 40 per cent variation in the gold resource, depending upon whether a production or calculated stope grade is used in grade assignment for the major reef deposits. Recent diamond drilling has intersected approximately 40 new gold bearing quartz reefs and sulfide zones that contain all the key mineralogical and structural indicators, and traditional large variations in gold grades similar to the historical major production zones. The implications of grade factoring and grade assignment are the greatest challenges confronting the resource estimation team in defining grade for these new zones. Grade assignment is seen as a method of balancing known historical production observations with the irregular grade distribution inferred from drill core assay results. Ongoing mine development and bulk sampling works are planned to validate the grade assignment process. The first stage of this process is the trial mining of the newly discovered Maxwell Reef (MR). The stope drawpoints were completed in August 2008 and the MRS1 stope is scheduled for completion in September. The stope reconciliation results will be presented at the October 2008 conference.
