"While oxalic acid precipitation practices are commonly applied on purified rare earth elements (REEs) pregnant leaching solutions (PLS), few efforts have been reported using oxalic acid (OXA) to recover REEs directly from untreated PLS. High oxalic acid demand is the most significant issue in all these direct oxalic precipitation (DOP) practices. Preliminary research on DOP of REE from a dilute PLS originating from an acid bake followed by water leaching was conducted. At 75°C, the oxalic acid demand was between 12 and 18 times the stoichiometric requirement for complete REE precipitation. Conducting DOP at 25°C had superior REE recovery but the product purity and filterability declined. Between 75°C and 100°C, REE recovery increased with increasing temperature. When sodium hydroxide was used to adjust the pH during DOP, in the range of 0.5 to 1.5, higher pH benefited REE recovery. Using ammonium hydroxide in place of sodium hydroxide, the REE recovery was reduced by close to 5%. Sodium chloride addition to the PLS was also investigated and the results showed that at both 75°C and 25°C, the REE recovery was enhanced substantially. At 25°C, when the oxalic acid addition was controlled at 4.7 times the stoichiometric requirement, the overall REE recovery reached 95% with the addition of 240 g/L NaCl. Other reagents such as KCl, NH4Cl also showed significant enhanced REE recovery at the same oxalic acid addition. The addition of sodium sulphate appeared to largely enhance the precipitation of LREE but inhibited the formation of HREE oxalate. All results indicate the formation of rare earth double salts may play an important role in REE DOP sulphate media.INTRODUCTIONThe conventional routes for recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from a sulphuric acid pregnant leaching solution (PLS) involves an initial purification step for removal of iron, aluminium for example by precipitation through neutralization, followed by precipitation of REEs as hydroxide, oxalate or carbonate salts, or by bulk solvent extraction for REE recovery (Xia, 2013). Another route was used by Bayan Obo in their historical flowsheet, where the PLS was first subjected to double sulphate precipitation, then the remaining REEs, mostly heavy rare earth elements (HREE), were recovered by oxalate precipitation (Li, 2011)."

A study has been made to determine the sites at which sulfur adsorption occurs on copper surfaces. measurements were made of the relative torques, Ys, at the intersection of twin boundaries with surfaces near the three low-index orientations, i.e., (100), @lo), and 011), over a range of H2S/H2 ratios. HZS concerztvations j'ro~n 3 to 1500pp)n between 830" and 1050°C were used. It is concluded that sulfur adsorption occurved preferentially though not exclusively at edge sites near the (100) and (110) surfaces in the HzS range — 700 Ppm giving rise to negative torques near these orientations. Beyond this HzS range, adsorption occurred at all sites. Near the (111) surface, 7/y little with HzS concentration up to approxiwzately 75pptn. Above this range, the results indicate adsorption is occurring OH both terrace and edge sites. SCIENTIFIC interest in surfaces and their interactions with a gaseous environment dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. The scientific luminaries of that period—Faraday, Maxwell, Rayleigh, Dewar, and Gibbs—were already concerned about such processes. However, it has only been within the past several decades that adsorption on metal surfaces has been actively studied. This increased interest in adsorption has been brought about by the advent of new and improved experimental techniques and apparatus, e.g., ultrahigh vacuum, and field-emission and ion microscopes. However, most of the work done using these techniques has been carried out at low temperatures. When adsorption studies have been made at either low or high temperatures, they usually gave no indication of the particular surface orientations or type of sites on which adsorption was occurring. In the last few years, there have been a series of studies in which the surface tension, y,, and/or its derivative with respect to orientation, 7, have been studied as a function of orientation and atmosphere.'-7 Nearly all of the work on the relative torque,* ~/y, silver annealed in hydrogen and air.6 Recently Winterbottom and Gjostein" have used a modified and more accurate Mykurian method to determine the y plot of gold in hydrogen The only work in which T/~, has been measured over a range of chemical potentials for a given solute, p2, is that of Robertson and shewmon7 on the Cu-0 system. They measured T/Y, vs Po, (10"" to 10- l3 atm) at 1000°C in various mixtures of Hz0 and HZ. From this work they estimated the value of p2 at which one half of the surface sites are occupied with oxygen, pg, as being in the range 10- l6 to 10- l5 atm of oxygen. They also found that increasing Pa increased the magnitude of ~/y, near the (111) and (100) orientations. This indicates that oxygen is not adsorbed preferentially at step edges, but uniformly over all surface sites. In addition, they did one experiment on sulfur adsorption on copper surfaces, which indicated that sulfur adsorption decreases ~/y, near the (100) orientation, while not affecting ~/y, near the (111). This could be interpreted as indicating that sulfur adsorbs preferentially at step edges near the (100). In this paper the primary objective of the work has been to carry out a study of sulfur adsorption on copper surfaces over a range of temperatures and p,. In conjunction with this work, thermal grooving at grain boundaries has been examined as a method of determining the effect of sulfur adsorption on y,. METHODS Ideally, one would like to have information on the quantity of solute adsorbed on a surface and the types of sites at which it is absorbed as a function of p2. The total quantity adsorbed or the surface excess is given by the thermodynamic equation Thus data on the variation of y, with pz indicates the value of p2 at which adsorption becomes appreciable and the quantity adsorbed. The type of adsorption site is more difficult to deduce but information on this can be obtained from the variation of rz with 8, the angular deviation of the surface orientation. This is obtained from the thermodynamic equationlg Data on t and ys as functions of p2 have been obtained by the following methods. 1) Twin Boundary Grooving—By determining the effect of adsorption on the torque, 7, where T is the variation of surface energy, y,, with orientation, it is possible to obtain some indication as to the preferred sites of adsorption. Since iron oxide and silicon oxide are major gangue components in various types of ore, FeO-SiO2 base slag, ie fayalite slag, has been often encountered in pyrometallurgical processes of non-ferrous metals. During most matte production processes such as the smelting of Cu, Pb, and Ni, the FeOSiO2 based slag is inevitably formed and plays an important role in refining crude metal as well as engineering aspects. Recently, similar pyrometallurgical approaches have been attempted in the recovery of valuable metals (Ni, Co, Cr) from wasted secondary batteries. Thus, the viscosity of the FeO-SiO2 based slag has great significance in properly controlling smelting processes. However, when molten metal or matte does not coexist with the slag during the measurement, there has been a serious difficulty in maintaining Fe valance and consequently, the slag composition. In the present research, the viscosity of molten FeO-SiO2 slag was measured in 1573~1673 K using a rotational viscometer. In order to keep the state of iron oxides, the oxygen partial pressure was controlled using CO/CO2 gas mixture. The optimised ratio of CO/CO2 could be calculated using Fe/Fe2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ equilibria at each temperature. The composition of the slag, particularly Fe valance, after the measurement was analysed with the aid of an inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and an automatic potentiometric titrator. The measurement showed that the FeO-SiO2 slag has considerably low viscosity values in the molten state, and it sharply increases as the temperature decreases. In spite of the careful oxygen partial pressure control, a part of Fe2+ was found to be oxidised to Fe3+, with a maximal case reaching about 20 per cent. The increase in viscosity of FeO-SiO2 at low temperatures can be attributed to the composition change due to an unavoidable Fe2+ oxidation. In addition, the relationship between the change in the viscosity and the liquidus temperature of FeO-SiO2 based slag was discussed to understand the composition dependence of viscosity.

The Telfer concentrator, located in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia, consists of a dual train gold/copper operation processing ore from one underground and, currently, two open pit mines with differing mineralogy. The flotation circuit of each train was designed to operate in several modes depending on the feed mineralogy. The majority of ore mined at Telfer is processed in a sequential mode where copper minerals are first floated into a saleable copper concentrate followed by the flotation of an auriferous pyrite concentrate which is treated in an on-site hydrometallurgical plant (carbon-in-leach (CIL)). Gold is recovered as a gravity product within the primary grinding circuit, to the copper concentrate, and to a lesser extent, the CIL circuit.Since Telfer was re-opened, with a new concentrator, in 2004, the processing plant has struggled with poor copper concentrate grades, partially due to the excessive entrainment of non-sulfide gangue minerals in the copper flotation circuit and, more recently, due to composite copper particles produced when processing ore from a supplementary satellite pit that has not previously been processed through the new Telfer concentrator. Gold recoveries in the CIL circuit have also been below industry standard. This paper presents the implementation of recent changes made to the circuit to address these performance issues. The reconfiguration of the circuit has involved the installation of the following major equipment items: two ISAMillsÖ in ultra-fine grinding applications (one in the copper circuit and one in the pyrite circuit), two Jameson Cells to improve fine gangue rejection and a bank of 5 + Outotec TC30s to recovery copper and gold from the reground pyrite stream. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

The processing of pyrite concentrates may be accomplished with a preliminary enrichment due to withdrawal of iron sulfides from initial concentrate. The withdrawal of iron sulfides is possible with the help of magnetic separation when the magnetic iron sulfides (pyrrhotites) separate from non-magnetic fraction?the sulfides of non-ferrous metals. The conversion of non-magnetic pyrite to magnetic pyrrhotites of adjusted structure occurs because of roasting with the withdrawal a part of sulfur. The resultant pyrrhotites are strong ferromagnetic with hexagonal structure. This paper contains results of studying magnetic properties of pyrrhotites, findings of the de-composition of initial pyrite with the consequence homogenizing of product and hardening of product of decomposition in liquid nitrogen. Define the type of pyrrhotites super lattice structure, was established that at increasing of sulfur contention the magnetic properties of pyrrhotites are change ? pyrrhotite begin evince the properties of antiferromagnetic material and magnetic susceptibility of material is interruptive changing from 0 to 1.7×10-3~1.9×10-3 SI units/g system. The paper contains results of technological researching of pyrrhotizing-magnetizing roasting of pyrite concentrates in different condition: in unoxidizing, with the decreasing contention of oxygen and in autogenous regime in air atmosphere. Established that the magnetic susceptibility of products depend of pyrite degree dissociation and achieve 2×10-3~3×10-3 SI units/g system at 40%~45% desulphurization. Defined the conditions of steady regime autogenous roasting, at resultant products possess coefficient of magnetization, and this can be used magnetic separation for separating ferromagnetic pyrrhotites from gangues and non-magnetic sulfides of non-ferrous metals. This technology of pyrrhotizing roasting is recommended for effecting in industrial condition. The initial materials and products of roasting subjected to chemical, thermogravimetric, Moss-bauer spectroscopy and X-ray analysis, defined the magnetic properties.

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

A necessidade da aplicação dos aços de alta dureza é recorrente nas indústrias de mineração, visto que esses equipamentos são submetidos continuamente a esforços mecânicos. Por isso o objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar uma amostra de aço Hardox 450 HB soldada pela técnica undermatching com a finalidade de se avaliar a sua soldabilidade, dureza e microestrutura, qualificando a sua predisposição para o uso fabril. Realizou-se o ensaio de composição química, o ensaio metalográfico e o de microdureza afim de se comparar com os dados de fabricantes deste aço e avaliando com os parâmetros de soldagem aplicados a sua susceptibilidade à propagação de trincas. Observou-se que a microestrutura revelada é a martensita com conformação de grãos mais refinados entre o metal de base e o metal de adição. Através da análise química percebeu-se que de acordo com o valor do carbono equivalente, este aço possui média soldabilidade.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu co-deposited. Decreasing Cu co-deposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave e1ectrowinning at 70? C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 ms to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µ g/mL to 0.1 µ g/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 µ g/mL to 0.2 µ g/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µ g/mL.

CONSIPERABLE information on the industrial or non-metallic mineral resources of British Columbia has been published. For a general resume of the subject, reference may be made to a paper presented by A. M. Richmond before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1935 (1). To avoid duplication, the present paper is confined to a discussion of the existing industrial mineral industry of the Province and of the factors governing its present and future development. British Columbia's mineral production in 1936 had a value approximately 15 per cent of that for the whole of Canada. Preliminary estimates for 1937 indicate that this proportion has been maintained, although the totals have increased about 25 per cent. The following table presents comparative figures, for the year 1936, illustrating the relative importance of the major divisions of the mineral industry in British Columbia and in Canada as a whole.

During the course of the cooperative smoke abatement investigation carried on by the Bureau of Mines , the city of Salt Lake and the University of Utah during 1919-1920 , a study was made as to the suitability of Utah coals for by-product coking with particular reference to low temperature coking . was done because it was realized that a smokeless fuel for domestic consumers was the best remedy for this class of smoke producer . A report of the technical side of the work was included in the final report of the cooperative investiga- Since this report was written (June 1 , 1920) further work has been done by other investigators .

A laboratory study was carried out on the treatment of sulphidic copper concentrates in aqueous chloride systems under elevated temperatures and oxygen overpressure. Exploratory tests showed that chalcopyriteoxidizes with various chloride salts to form, depending upon the pH of the system, soluble copper chloride or insoluble copper oxychloride salts; the copper can then readily be recovered from the solution or residues respectively. During the leaching, iron was oxidized to iron oxide and remained in the leach residue while the bulk of the sulphide sulphur was oxidized to the elemental form with a minor portion oxidized further to sulphate. The presence of metal chloride salts in the system increased the oxidation rates of chalcopyrite and depressed the solubilization of iron in the system. A systematic oxidation leach study carried out in (1) ammonium chloride and (2) sodium chloride systems showed that the former system required little or no HC1 addition while the latter required 2 mol of HC1 per mol of dissolved copper (plus zinc). The copper was recovered from the cuprous or cupric chloride leach solutions by cementation with iron. Extractions of 99% copper and zinc, 97% silver, and negligible iron were obtained. Sulphur was oxidized to the elemental or sulphate form; the relative proportions of the total sulphur were 60 and 30% for system (1) and 80 and 10% for system (2). A flowsheet for a conceptual process with minimal reagent requirements was proposed.

Underground mining operations tend to have higher operating costs than surface mines. When metal prices decrease, profitability is jeopardized due to the high costs. Therefore, mining management harnesses new practices that increase operational efficiency. One way to manage this challenge is to invest in new mine planning practices. Stope layout optimization as a part of underground mine planning aims to identify a portion of the orebody in the form of production volumes (stopes) to maximize profit under roadway and stope dimension constraints. In this paper we propose a novel approach based on identifying ore-rich areas of the deposit and prioritizing their extraction through an iterative heuristic clustering approach. The proposed approach is compared with and validated by an exact method through a small mining example. The heuristics produced nearly identical results in a very short time. Finally, a case study was carried out using a larger data-set. The cluster-based iterative approach generated nearoptimal stope layouts in a computationally effective manner.

Since 1952, Bond’s equation has been used as a standard to predict the specific energy of grinding for a given duty. The Bond’s equation considers that the exponent is constant for all conditions. Hukki, in 1961, pointed out that the exponent is a function of the particle size, and concluded that the Bond’s equation applies successfully for an intermediate range of sizes; out of this range the Bond’s equation leads to high error as demonstrated in this paper. More recently, in 2004, S. Morrell presented a new formula in which the exponents vary with the feed and product size. This paper is based on Hukki’s approach and presents a new general formula, in which the exponent varies only with the feed particle size. This new equation has been proven in 82 observable cases in Peru and other countries around the world, involving ball mills and vertimills in different configurations over a wide range of feed and product sizes, work indices and mill diameters; in most cases, the predicted value has an error less than 10% with regards to the observed value and no need for any correction factor. Adsorption of cyanide complexes of gold, silver, copper, mercury, nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc and cadmium has been studied. Adsorption isotherms of the mentioned metals from individual solutions for different free cyanide concentrations have been obtained. Values of the constants of Freundlich isotherm equation have been calculated. Metal cyanide complexes affinity to activated carbon was determined.

The techniques of testing the physical properties of green pellets produced in a batch balling test are described. It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

Heat-capacity measurements were made over the range 8° to 350° K on beryllium sulfate dihydrate and beryllium sulfate tetrahydrate using an adiabatic calorimeter. No anomalies were noted in the curve for either compound. Smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated from the heat-capacity data at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K. The entropy values calculated at 298.15° K were 39.01 ± 0.12 entropy units (eu) for the dihydrate and 55.68 ± 0.17 eu for the tetrahydrate.

Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 1,250 m3/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 meters or more as far as 1,500 meters from the mine. No wells have yet become non-productive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures or ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand, silt, and clay. Hydraulic conductivities and storage coefficients are comparable with those of undisturbed confined aquifers. Water quality in mined lands is highly diverse because of diverse spoils lithologies and poorly-established ground-water circulation. Ground water in spoils is more mineralized than in the coal beds and chemically resembles waters from sandstone aquifers. Hydrologic effects of mining will not be catastrophic or widespread but may have local significance. Most notable changes will be in water quality; availability will not be permanently reduced.

O Steel Frame é um sistema construtivo eficiente e sustentável. Sua estrutura é em perfis de aço e pode suportar até 4 pavimentos, e sua fundação é em radie. Por isso, os perfis da base são revestidos de manta asfáltica para serem protegidos de agentes degradantes. Após algum tempo, a manta perde sua eficácia, expondo o perfil ao meio. O objetivo dessa pesquisa é explicar a corrosão do perfil, através da investigação por MEV, EDS e teste de tração, mostrando a influência do concreto no mesmo, mediante a determinação de suas características mecânicas após o contato. Os resultados mostram difusão dos elementos do concreto no aço, afetando suas propriedades mecânicas através do aumento de limite de resistencia a tração e redução do módulo de elasticidade. Houve também redução na superfície de zinco, mostrando principio de corrosão.

The determination of the governing step of the deoxidation rate and the effects of the hydrogen content of the mixtures (C), the diameter of the delivery orifice (4) and the Reynolds number of the orifice (Re.) on the product Av kjg were investigated. A,, is the total surface area of the interface between the bubbles and the melt and kjg is the mass transfer coefficient in the gas phase. The design of the experiments was based on a two level statistically fractionated, factorial planning. Oxygen in the melt was measured as a function of time. It was found that the governing step of the deoxidation rate was the transport of hydrogen in the gaseous phase and that {Ay kjg} increases with C, {o} and Reo.
