Discussion of the paper of H. HANEMANN and PAUL D. MERICA, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 108, December, 1915, pp. 2371 to 2385. JOHN A. MATHEWS, Syracuse, N. Y.-I should like to ask the authors if there is any evidence of chemical change resulting information of, alpha iron from the gamma crystals found in nickel steel of high nickel content when stressed beyond the elastic limit, similar to the effect produced by drastic cooling. Would the stresses mentioned and the drastic cooling both result in an increase in magnetic induction? I would also like to ask the authors if they have made a test of the hardness. It would be very interesting to see whether the hardness decreased under the conditions of stress, as might be the case if alpha iron were produced. PAUL D. MERICA, Washington, D. C.-While it is impossible to state absolutely, it is my belief that the effect of deformation is approximately the same as, that of -drastic cooling, but we did not make a test, of the hardness.

(communication to the Secretary*):—In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for 1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the market for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908' does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. To quote again from his report, he says (p. 241): "The year 1908 was not marked by any notable gain in the construction of byproduct coking plants, though some new work was done. Foram considerados os fenômenos metalúrgicos de solubilização, precipitação, recristalização e crescimento de grão. Os resultados finais previstos pela simulação mostraram-se satisfatórios, permitindo uma boa previsibilidade da resistência mecânica do laminado a quente.

A study of the structures arising from the decomposition of the ß solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-A1 systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution— the Widmanstätten structure—-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the ? phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series—that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-—which at present seems the only a1ternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the ß and in the precipit'at.ion of the y phase from the y in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point, of view.

The Department of Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines performs the task of estimating the quantity of coal reserves existing in each state on a county by county basis. As a part of Information Circular 8655, the Bureau of Mines established the criteria for the uniform estimations of coal reserves and listed the most recent estimates of coal reserves by county and by seam. At the same time however, the Bureau recognized that these figures represented the upper bound with regard to the estimated actually usable or obtainable reserves. Recovery of these reserves are subject to the mining methods used and to the resolution of such problems as the use of poor quality coal and competition provided by conflicting land use. These problems, in practice restrict the recovery of the estimated quantities of coal reserves listed in IC 8655. Another impact, the subject of this manual, is the impact resulting from previous mining activities. In particular, many of the reserve seams included in the reserve estimates overlie or underlie mined-out coal beds. Portions of these reserve seams may therefore be unmineable or at best may have a reduced quantity of extractable coal. In order to improve the accuracy of the coal reserve base estimates, the Bureau of Mines funded an effort1 to develop a systematic methodology for estimating the coal loss associated with the impact of previous mining activity. The coal loss calculation model (CLCM) described in this manual is a result of that effort and addresses the percentage of coal loss in reserve seams due to previous overmining or undermining.

From the most remote periods of civilization stone has been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns), or single markers, to great obelisks and pyramids or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1650 at an estimated cost of $50,000,000 or more and is today an object of unusual interest for travelers. Other magnificent memorials both ancient and modern are to be found in many lands. No sharp line can be drawn between buildings and monuments, because the larger types of memorials such as the Bok Singing Tower, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and mausoleums of various types have features in common with buildings. However, great care must be exercised in selecting a site for a quarry that will produce acceptable monumental stone because appearance as well as quality is of prime importance. The deposit must be of uniform texture and attractive color and must be notably free of knots, hairlines, impurities, incipient seams, or other defects. Many memorials are of polished stone, and spots or streaks that might be virtually Invisible on a natural rock face will appear distinctly on a polished surface. Hence, stone to be polished must be selected with unusual care. However, less flawless stone may be used for hammered surfaces.

Embora a resistência ao desgaste seja geralmente a principal propriedade avaliada decorrente da adição de terceiros elementos em ligas Al-Sn, não somente os fenômenos tribológicos são responsáveis pela deterioração gradual das peças, mas também os fenômenos relacionados à corrosão. Dessa forma, o presente estudo objetiva analisar o efeito de características microestruturais formadas durante a solidificação transiente da liga Al-9%Sn-5%Zn na resistência à corrosão em solução 0,06M NaCl investigada por polarização potenciodinâmica e espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica. Foi observada uma morfologia microestrutural caracterizada por dendritas da fase α-Al com concentrações de Zn tanto na matriz dendrítica quanto em regiões ricas em Sn localizadas nos contornos interdendríticos. A evolução dos espaçamentos dendríticos primários (λ1) também foi correlacionada com parâmetros térmicos de solidificação. Finalmente, constatou-se que a amostra com microestrutura mais grosseira, ou seja, λ1 = 89,6 μm, apresentou comparativamente menor densidade de corrente de corrosão e maior resistência à polarização.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a test procedure to compare the initiating strength of detonators by using adjustable-sensitivity liquid explosives. Various tests of detonator strength are currently used by the industry, but many of them do not quantify the ability of detonators to initiate detonation reactions in an explosive charge. The USBM used mixtures of nitromethane and ethylene diamine, the sensitivity being "fine-tuned" by 2-nitropropane. Military standard J-2, commercial No.6, and commercial No.8 detonators were evaluated using three test configurations: (1) axially immersed in the test explosive, (2) tip just touching surface of the explosive, and (3) immersed transversely in the explosive. Markedly different results were obtained for these three configurations, indicating that the directional effects are important. This explains why different detonator strength tests do not correlate well with each other. Some tests, such as the sand bomb and underwater, measure the total energy out-put, while other tests, such as the plate dent, test measure the energy in the axial direction. The USBM's test data indicate the importance of conducting the experimentation in the manner in which the detonator is actually intended to function.

Thennodynamic properties of several quaternary systems are calculated using our recently modified Margules equations. The modified Margules equations are expressed up to infinite order in the vicinity of solvent. Quaternary system of one solvent and three,solute partials are derived. First order interaction coefficients of binary, ternary and cross -interaction parameters of quaternary system are used to'evaluate the partial functions. In the original fonn of Margules equations,derived partial functions are convergent and same 'as Unified ,Interaction Parameter Fonnalism. But considering up to infinite order of the Margules coefficients, the functions are divergent, in order to overcome this restriction, Margules equations are modified to get consistent equations. Derived partial functions are thennodynamica Hy consistent with Maxwell and Gibbs Duhem relations. The derived logarithmic activity coefficient of the solvent and solutes are consistent with the ternary systems. The calculated data, ie., activity coefficient values of nitrogen and interaction coefficients are in good agreement with the data of Fe-Cr-V -N. Fe-Ni-V -N, Fe-Cr-Ta-N and Fe-Ni-Ta-N systems.

The Bureau of Mines investigated reports of mineral deposits within 10 miles of the route of the proposed pipeline from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez. No producing lode deposits or lode prospects of possible national economic significance were found. Measured placer deposits in the route are or slight value except possibly some deeply buried gold placer deposits in the Fairbanks and Livengood Quadrangles. The pipeline corridor crosses five belts of minerals having potential economic value: (1) The north slope of the Brooks Range (oil, gas, oil shale, coal, phosphate); (2) the south slope 01 the Brooks Range (copper, gold); (3) the Livengood area (gold); (4) the Fairbanks area lead-silver, antimony); and (5) the Wrangell Mountains-Denali copper belt (copper-gold). The Jarvis Creek coalfield, an eastern extension of the Nenana coalfield, is on the north side of this belt. Scattered along the corridor across the Chugach Mountain and in the vicinity of Valdez are a wide variety of metallic deposits that make up the eastern margin of the Chugach gold belt but do not seem to constitute a well-defined zone.

As emission constraints for metallurgical plants become more difficult to meet; control of major, multi-vessel, flue systems become more critical. Control instabilities can result in significant loss of system capacity or emissions to the environment. This paper will discuss the use of dynamic simulation techniques to optimize both the design and control strategies for these systems. A significant ,safety hazard is associated with pressure excursions from process upsets or equipment failures. Pressure rise rates of up to 10 kPajsec can occur. These cannot-be followed by conventional controls. Fail-safe high speed venting is required to protect both the furnaces and operating personnel'. Design options, sizing techniques and practical problems are discussed.

Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. In addition, a case study comparing two different density determination methods applied to the same rock samples from the Los Bronces Copper mine was undertaken and the results of that study are presented here.Selecting the most appropriate method to determine density and comparing results from two or more techniques against each other, together with other suitable quality control procedures, is considered to be of utmost importance for all mining operations and exploration projects.CITATION:Makhuvha, M, Arellano, R M and Harney, D M W, 2014. The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

Remarks of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General, Superintendent, Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Company., Troy N. Y.—In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to' draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances hearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill

"Electromagnetic stirring has found a wide application in metals processing for the benefit of obtaining refined solidification microstructures. This paper presents an experimental study on the melt flow and turbulent behavior in an electromagnetically stirred Woods metal pool. The experimental setup consists of metal bath unit equipped with temperature control to allow both cooling and heating, velocity probe positioning unit and data and signal acquisition and processing unit. The whole measuring system is under the control of an IBM personal computer. Velocity measurements are made using the incorporated magnet probes, which are calibrated using a turntable. The measured results showing the effect of the coil positions, coil arrangements and the applied currents on the melt flow are presented. Both mean flow and turbulence quantities are discussed.1. IntroductionElectromagnetic stirring is widely practiced in the metals industry for melt mixing and for casting microstructure refinement. Industrial examples are taken from induction furnaces where the electromagnetic forces are applied to generate desired melt mixing and also various types of electromagnetic stirrers used in various stages of steel and/or aluminum casting processes to produce fine grain solidification microstructure or to eliminate undesired defects such as TCG (twinned-columnar-grain) structure. For ultrahigh purity aluminum or high strength aluminum alloys containing zirconium or lithium, grain refinement can be difficult with the conventional technique, and electromagnetic stirring provides a particularly powerful means to obtain the refined solidification microstructure [1]. A fundamental understanding of the melt flow and the turbulence characteristics in these magnetically-driven flow systems is of significant engineering importance to both process design and product quality improvement.There exists extensive literature on the magnetically-driven melt flows in material processing systems. Nakanish. et al. [2] were perhaps among the early investigators to mathematically and physically model the magnetically-driven flow phenomena in molten metal systems. Subsequent theoretical and experimental work by Tarapore and Evans [3, 4], Szekely and Chang [5], Hunt and Moore [6] and Szekely and El-Kaddah [7] has contributed very significantly to our understanding of magnetically-driven flow in inductively stirred melts. They have developed mathematical models for the electromagnetic field and turbulent flow in induction furnace and validated the models by either laboratory experiments or direct measurements in the industrial-scale induction furnaces."

Modelling of pyrometallurgical processes can become extremely challenging when the process involves complex chemical reactions, phase change, multiphase flows, heat and mass transfer and fluid flow. Traditionally modelling involving complex thermodynamic equilibrium and thermochemistry are treated separately from problems in which transport phenomena are dominant, such as CFD and heat transfer studies. The separation is also necessary due to the lack of modelling tools that can effectively couple both solution thermodynamic and transport phenomena or even multiphysics problems. However, there are, quite often, problems in high temperature process metallurgy in which it is not possible to simplify this two modelling approaches. Typical cases of this are for example, the modelling of slag freezing on furnace walls (electric or flash furnaces) to create a protective layer in front of the refractories hot wall, the formation of build up from the matte or metal phases at the hearth of the furnace, calcine smelting from charging piles into slag phase, etc. The problem is even more challenging in nonferrous pyrometallurgy as most, if not all, of the condense phases are highly non ideal solutions involving several components and exhibiting complex crystallization paths and miscibility gaps, such as the Fe-Ni-Cu-S matte, FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2, FeO-MgO-SiO2 slags, etc. In this paper, an approach to model coupled problems involving multiphysics and solution thermodynamic is presented. The approach consists in developing in-house a library containing the Gibbs energy minimization routines and using the local equilibrium concept for process modelling from a multiphysics commercial software (COMSOL). Simple test cases, such as building a non-ideal binary phase diagram on a CFD package is presented, the limitations and of other classic approaches such as equilibrium or Scheil cooling are discussed and compared to this model.

"In 2001, a pile trial site was established at Limelette in Belgium consisting of 25 displacement screw piles and 5 driven pre-cast piles. Interested parties were invited to participate in a pile prediction event, whereby they would submit predicted static load test behaviour in the form of load settlement plots. These predictions could be based on soil investigation results supplied by the organizers, or dynamic load test measurements.Following the submission deadline, the organisers released the results of static load tests for comparison.Of all the six participants, including Statnamic, the SIMBAT method was independently accredited with achieving the best predictions.This paper examines at the differences between SIMBAT and other systems, and presents the correlations from the Limelette trial.INTRODUCTIONThe Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) initiated an ambitious research programme involving the construction and testing of some 60 trial piles spread between two sites, a clay site at Sint Kateline Waver and a sandy site at the BBRI headquarters at Limelette. The project was financed largely by the Belgian Ministry of Economic affairs. (ref 1.) This paper refers only to the second site.At Limelette, six different types of displacement pile were installed: one driven pre-cast and five cast in place screw piles - Atlas, DeWaal, Fundex, Olivier and Omega. The term "block caving" as used in this text includes panel caving and mass caving as described by Julin and Tobie (1973). This method reportedly was conceived in 1895 when a block of ore ranging up to 200 ft (61 m) in width was undercut at the Pewabic Mine on the Menominee Range in Michigan (Bucky, 1956). Over the years this method has evolved largely as a consequence of trial and error in which operators became acutely aware of what nature would allow and what it would not. Today block caving remains somewhat of an art rather than a science where experience often dictates what needs to be done. With the plunging prices of base and specialty metals in the early 1980s caving mines sought to reduce operating and development costs in order to return to profitability. For some this became an impossible task given the design, grade and operating costs of the day and closure became the only alternative. One lesson learned from the experiences of the 80s is that survivability depends on cost competitiveness and this implies the efficient use of resources and technology. To this end applied rock mechanics serves as a useful tool. The purpose of this paper is to show how Geomechanics can be used? in block caving to facilitate sound decision making and how this equates to dollars saved. Features of mining method selection, design and operation are discussed as related to this theme.
