It has been demonstrated in the laboratory by A. J. Phillips1 that a transformation or conversion from beta directly to alpha may take place in a brass of 61 to 62.5 per cent copper content. The completion of the transformiation is dependent on a rapid rate of cooling from the all-beta field through the alpha + beta range to the alpha field. Phillips states that in a slowly cooled alloy containing 62 per cent copper and 38 per cent zinc the copper content of the beta is progressively decreased from 62 to 56 per cent by precipitation of alpha. Rapid cooling tends to prevent the separation of alpha with a copper content of more than 62 per cent by reducing to a minimum the time required for passing through the alpha + beta range. Upon crossing beyond the (alpha + beta) (alpha) boundary to the all-alpha region below, the material is transformed from beta to alpha. It, is essential that there be no change in composition. Phillips obtained his results by quenching a 62:38 copper-zinc alloy from 850" C. in iced brine at -8" C. No reference to the occurrence of this transformation in a manufacturing process has been found in the literature. An investigation of the microstructures of a number of hot forgings made from leaded brass rods yielded one forging in which this striking conversion from beta to alpha had occurred. The purpose of this paper is to describe the transformation and certain conditions under which it may occur during the hot pressing of brass. The conversion was noted in a shape forged from a leaded brass rod, the composition of which was: Cu, 60.26 per cent; Zn, 37.86; Pb, 1.88. In this study the lead content was disregarded and the alloy was considered to be equivalent to an alloy of 61.40 per cent copper and 35.60 per cent zinc (9812 parts = 100 parts). The possibility that the lead might obstruct or accelerate the precipitation of alpha was not studied. The lead appears as black globules in the photomicrographs and has a negligible solubility in the alloy.

Oil-field activities in Oklahoma made 1936 the best year since 1930. Approximately 2800 wells were completed, an increase of about 20 per cent over 1935. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission showed a total of 200,240,252 bbl. of oil purchased from leases in 1936. The assembly of a complete table of the oil fields of the state was not achieved, as many of the early records of operators and pipe-line companies are not complete, and data for the older fields will perhaps never be fully tabulated. Table 1 includes all of the new fields and most of the important fields of the State of Oklahoma. The outstanding developments of the year were: the discovery of rich Wilcox-sand production in the Moore pool; the spectacular drilling campaign in the Capitol or Mansion extension in the Oklahoma City pool; the surprising extension of the Olympic pool and the Hunton lime zone in the Fitts pool; and the failure to find more Ordovician production in southern Oklahoma. Wildcat discoveries, which were on a par with 1935, resulted in the discovery of such promising pools as Billings-Wilcox, North Bethel, North Earlsboro and North Lucien. The Fitts-Upper Simpson, Edmond, Jesse, Keokuk Falls and South Burbank pools underwent considerable development. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts area in Pontotoc County was greatly extended during the year and was the leader in drilling activity in the state. The producing limits were pushed to the east and north and the development of the Hunton lime horizon was outstanding. In the Upper Simpson zone 162 wells were completed; 137 in the Hunton lime zone and 26 in the Wilcox zone. The Oil Creek zone, a sand body below the Wilcox member, was discovered by the Magnolia-Statler No. 3 well located in the 1/4. 1/4 of sec. 28-2N.-7E. Moore Pool.—The Moore pool, in Cleveland County, which was opened in 1935 by the Sinclair Prairie-Franklin Community No. 1 well, surprised the oil industry when the Sinclair Prairie-Marvel No. 1 well, on Apr. 1, 1936, discovered a rich body of Wilcox sand below the distillate

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Homestake Mining Co.'s operations are at Lead, SD. Production from the various methods used are: 1 155 753 t/a (1,274,000 stpy) by open cut-and-fill, 68 039 t/a (75,000 stpy) by square set cut-and-fill, 144242 t/a (159,000 stpy) by shrinkage stoping, 107 048 t/ a (118,000 stpy) by blasthole stoping, and 67 132 t/a (74,000 stpy) in development work for a total of 1 542 214 t/a (1,700,000 stpy). Mining takes place from the 616-m (2000-ft) level to the 2073-m (6800 ft) level (Fig. 1). The average travel time to the stope is 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip of Ore Body Six major ledges varying from 914 m (3000 ft) long by 228.6 m (750 ft) wide to 305 m (1000 ft) long by 122 m (400 ft) wide are mined. Within these ledges are irregular-shaped areas of varying sizes. These ledges dip at approximately 1.2 rad (70°) to the east and plunge to the south from 0.26 to 1.57 rad (15° to 90°). Ground Conditions The ore is cummingtonite (chlorite schist) which is very competent except for major bedding planes and fracture patterns. The footwall is a slate but because of the dip presents very few problems. The hanging wall is also a slate which because of the dip and bedding is very weak and requires considerable rockbolting. No problem has been encountered with rock bursts to a depth of 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore Value The ore values vary somewhat from ledge to ledge, but the average ore delivered to the mill is approxi¬mately 6.2 g (0.2 oz) of gold per ton. A small amount of silver is the only byproduct of this operation. Annual production of gold is approximately 10 575 183 g (340,000 troy oz). Production Requirements The mine has a mill capacity of approximately 1 723 651 t (1,900,000 st) but because of several fac¬tors (manpower, depth, etc.) this mill capacity has not been attainable for the past several years.

"Soil contamination by oil as well as by other organic pollutants poses a major problem to the environment. Various methods have been used to remove organic contaminants from soil, such as: biological, thermal, chemical and physical. Methods based on Mineral Processing principles have also been used (cyclone separation, gravimetric separation, attritioning and washing). This paper studies the possibility to remove a rich-in-contaminant soil fraction by applying flotation. The contaminated soil was artificially prepared by mixing soil with diesel fuel. Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and a tertiary amine (TA) were used as collectors. The effect of collector quantity added and conditioning time was studied. The results showed that the removal of a rich-in-contaminant soil is feasible while a clean fraction is also obtained. In several cases, the removal of oil-contaminated soil approaches or reaches 100%. Introduction Human activities are intimately associated with environmental pollution to the air, water and soil, as well. Soil pollution from inorganic and organic compounds is of equal importance with that of air and water, as it results in soil degradation and its concomitant problems with respect to meeting the human needs (house building, agriculture etc). Heavy metals along with their compounds are encountered among the most usual soil inorganic pollutants. The corresponding organic soil-pollutants are oil, oil-derivatives, pesticides, various aromatic (benzene, phenols, cresols, toluene etc) and poly-aromatic (naphthalene, anthracene etc) hydrocarbons, as well as various other organic compounds (pyridine, cyclo-hexane etc). Oil remains the basic energy source sharing 38% of the global needs, being followed by coal and gas with a share of 26 and 21% correspondingly [1]. The entire activities related with oil production, transport and consumption promote pollution in the air, water and soil. Consequently, soil pollution from oil is favoured at refineries, storage sites (due to possible pipe and tank leakage, tank cleaning works, loading and transportation) and, finally, at the oil-selling sites. Oil (or diesel-oil) fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons, with 10-20 carbon atoms in the chain of each. It is mainly composed of paraffins, naphthenes and various aromatic compounds. In general, oil is composed of 20-30% in aromatic compounds, 5-6% in naphthenes and the rest is paraffins [1]."

Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

RECOVERY of selenium and tellurium at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining Co. has been previously described by the writer.1 During 1935 a new building was erected to house this operation and description of the new plant and process form the subject of this paper. The building, of modern steel and tile construction, covers an area of 5900 sq. ft. with a volume of approximately 165,000 cu. ft. The large monitored center bay is flanked by two smaller outside bays, one of which is devoted to the tellurium section. All equipment, ceilings and upper walls, are treated with aluminum paint, giving good illumination and facilitating good housekeeping, essential from a health standpoint in handling material of this nature. EQUIPMENT Layout and type of equipment conforms to the requirements of the process as described below. In the selenium section, storage tanks, neutralizing tanks and precipitators are of steel construction, lead-lined and. arranged for gravity flow (Fig. 1). The neutralizing tanks are equipped with water-cooled lead coils for controlling solution temperature, agitation being accomplished with compressed air. The precipitators are provided with mechanical agitators, and sulphur dioxide is introduced into the solution through 3-in. lead pipes leading from a manifold attached to the cover of the precipitator. Each precipitator has internal cooling coils and an air-jet exhauster to carry off fumes. Neutralized solutions are filtered in a 29-plate wooden filter press using heavy cotton duck as a filter medium, forced feed being maintained by a Welmet centrifugal pump. Dilute solutions are concentrated by evaporation in a vacuum evaporator, constructed of cast hard lead. Heat is supplied by an outside steam chest operating under 15 lb. steam pressure. The solution is circulated through the steam chest by a pump of antimonial lead at a rate approximating 400 cu. ft. per min. The evaporator is evacuated by a water-jet condenser that creates a vacuum of 26 in. of mercury under normal operating conditions. The capacity of the vessel is 60 cu. ft. and the rate of evaporation 25 cu. ft. per hour.

The last two decades have witnessed the emergence of numerous hydrometallurgical and direct processing techniques for the extraction of some metals from pocketed/lean/complex sulfide ore deposits. A new approach with some inherent technological merits, investigated in recent years, is the lime-enhanced reduction of metal sulfides. Thermodynamic aspects relevant to the lime-enhanced reduction of metal sulfides by H2,C0 and C are discussed. A survey of the researches on the basic features of and factors influencing the lime-scavenged reduction of selected sulfides and sulfide concentrates reveals that lime tremendously enhances the sulfide reduction rates (up to 100 times) and drastically reduces the sulfur emission into off-gas to negligible levels. Further successful practice of lime-enhanced reduction requires only a moderate temperature of reduction (characteristic of each sul¬fide) and, in the case of gaseous reduction, relatively low gas flow rates. Relevant kinetic aspects of the concerned reactions that have a bearing on process development and its understanding are also briefly discussed. A conceptual scheme of general applicability for the processing of sulfide concentrates by the lime-enhanced reduction technique consists of three main steps: (0 lime-enhanced reduction by a suitable reagent (e,g., H,2, CO, gasified coal, water gas), (ii) separation of the product metal from the dry slag (CaS + unused CO) by mechanical separation, magnetic/gravity concentration or flotation and (iii) melting and refining by standard procedures. This novel approach, which is patently less complex, is expected to employ basically simpler flow sheets at comparatively lower operational temperatures and aid in pollution abatement. Potential for developing such a route for the small scale extraction of metals like copper, molybdenum and antimony is indicated. Possibility of utilizing this technique for the production of fibers/ filaments of some metals is also outlined.

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Low of the Sea includes provisions under Article 76 for extending a coastal State's jurisdiction beyond the 200-nautical-mile (nm) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and for establishing the seaward limits of sovereign rights over natural resources. Article 76 prescribes a set of methodologies for determining these outer limits based on physiography and sediment thickness. The methodologies were applied to each of the five continental* margin areas of the United States - Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and Pacific Islands-using existing digital hydrographic and geologic data. Figures 1 and 2 show the results of applying the methodologies to the Atlantic, Pacific, Alaskan, and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. Figure 1 depicts the preliminary limits of each of the Article 76 determinations for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. The Atlantic limits were described by Carpenter, Thormahlen, and Amato (1995) at the 26th Underwater Mining Institute.1 The limits for the Alaskan continental shelves are shown in Figure 2. Additional areas beyond the 200 nm EEZ are highlighted. These include a small area north of the U.S. - Canada boundary, containing 7,000 km2, a large area north of Point barrow (395,000 km2), and a third area north of the Aleutian Islands (178,000 km2). The shelf between the first two areas appears to have sediments thick enough to qualify for the 1 percent method (Irish Formula); however, year-round ice cover has prevented acquisition of seismic or drill data. The entire northern Alaska shelf is prospective for petroleum The Gulf of Mexico (Figure 1) has two small areas beyond the EEZ known as "doughnut holes." One is south of Louisiana and includes part of the Sigsbee Escarpment, an area believed to have potential for oil and gas. Oil was found on Sigsbee Knoll in cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project's Leg 1 cruise in 1968. The Sigsbee areas contains about 6,000 km2. The second area is south of the Florida panhandle and contains about 12,000 km2.

The Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sees. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and secs. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 21/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Marquette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette. History The presence of iron formation in this property has been known for many years, and mining operations on a small scale have been carried on intermittently. The Dexter mine, on the SE.1/4 of the NW.1/4 of sec. 3, was worked from 1883 to 1897 and 118,000 tons of ore was mined. From 1907 to 1915 extensive exploration was carried on over the whole of sec. 3, including 79 diamond-drill holes with a total footage of 26,000 ft. The Chase mine, on the NE.1/4 of the NE.1/4 of sec. 3, was developed from this exploration work, but after about 200,000 tons had been mined the property was abandoned. From 1908 to 1910 exploration was carried on by another company on sec. 4, 47-28, including four drill holes with a total footage of about 5000 ft. Much of the drilling on sec. 3 and of the exploration work on sec. 4 are within the present developed area of the Blueberry mine. A general campaign of diamond-drill exploration was undertaken in 1924, and within a year a considerable amount of ore was developed. The Ford Motor Co. then took an option on the property and carried on check drilling and diamond-drill work until the spring of 1926, when enough ore had been developed to warrant the sinking of a shaft

"Despite being a field of study that requires practical knowledge and experience, mining engineering education follows the same pattern in most mining universities around the world, consisting of theoretical courses and laboratory-based practical modules (Mischo, 2015). The possibility of having practical training in real mining conditions on actual mine sites or processing plants is limited, while the only contact that undergraduate students have with mining operations during their time of study is usually through shorttime internships or visits in the context of educational trips. Real integration between universities and the mining industry may be scarce, which does not help students to observe the actual processes and thus understand the whole picture of mining operations.Indirect practical training is now possible since that technology is shifting from mechanical to digital, and the use of virtual reality — in the context of Mining 4.0 — can provide additional experience to the learning process. However, virtual reality is limited to the visual impression and is also limited in actions (Binder et al., 2018). In any case, when there is not a proper pragmatic view of how the different disciplines link to each other, especially if there is a lack of communication, unfortunately the results could be seen at a later stage in the mines as a poor performance of professionals and workers.Another major challenge for educating specialists in the mining sector is that experimental mines suitable for practical education, where the skills and knowhow could be developed and/or enhanced, are rare worldwide. Such research and educational (R&E) facilities are practically former metal ore mines that have been transformed into experimental sites. Besides being limited in number, not all facilities of this kind serve both a research and educational purpose.An early example of asolely experimental mines is the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Mine site operated by LKAB in Sweden, where systematic research on rock mechanics and mining engineering was successfully carried out in the 1980s. As a result, the developed underground mining technology was applied in LKAB’s mines at a later stage. There have also been research mines within collieries such as the former Lake Macquarie Mine at New South Wales in Australia and the Zeche Tremonia Mine in Germany), but these are no longer in operation (Mischo, 2015)."

Recent publication of United States Bureau of Mines figures showed that the sand and gravel (3) industry is the largest single mining industry in the United States in term of yearly tonnage produced. The yearly production of over 500,000,000 tons per year now exceed bituminous coal production. This disclosure caught unawares many observers who have not been following closely the rapid-growth of this phase of mining. Along with this steady growth in production, the sand and gravel industry has gone through an accelerated and varied program of beneficiation in a period of the last ten years.

This report describes serious injuries occurring to bulldozer operators working at U.S. coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. The period covered is 1988-97. The data were collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A total of 873 injury records are examined. These injuries resulted in 18 fatalities and 31,866 lost workdays. All of these injuries occurred to dozer operators while they were doing common production tasks. An injury classification system was developed to code the narrative information that describes the circumstances surrounding the injuries. Injury records are categorized by activity (task being done), incident result (what apparently happened to the dozer), and operator impact (how the operator was injured). Where information is available, contributing factors are identified. This classification system supplemented the standard injury/illness data classification system compiled by MSHA. The results of the study indicate that, from 1993 to 1997, the number of serious injuries to dozer operators declined by 30%. The reduction in serious injuries was accompanied by a decrease in days lost due to injury. Although the number of reported injuries has decreased, dozer operators being jolted and jarred accounts for the largest percentage (70% of the incidents) and severity (75% of the workdays lost) of serious injuries while operating the equipment. Vertical jars (while backing up the dozer) resulting in injury to the operator accounted for a sizable percentage of jolting and jarring injuries. Working near an edge carries significant risk for fatal injuries. Of 116 incidents where the dozer fell over an edge, rolled over, or fell into a hidden void, 14 (12%) resulted in fatal injuries. In cases where the dozer operator either jumped or was thrown out of the cab in a fall over or rollover, 7 out of 26 were killed. Overall, 80% of the fatalities occurred while working near an edge or hidden void or on a steep slope. Further reductions in injury risk will require more widespread use of seatbelts, field and laboratory research interventions to better assess the effect of alternative engineering (e.g., seat and seat suspension) designs to dampen or isolate the effects of shock and vibration, and continued focus on hazard awareness, recognition, and response.

"It is now possible to use 3D X-ray tomography analysis for plant-site characterization of coarse particles at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site coarse particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Applications in the mineral industries are discussed including the coal industry, aggregate industry, metal mining and the processing of industrial minerals. INTRODUCTION Plant-site characterization of coarse particles at coal preparation plants, crushed stone/aggregate plants, and mineral processing plants is needed to improve plant capacity, product quality, and/or process efficiency. Not much on-line coarse particle characterization is done at these plants. Some limited information regarding particle size is obtained on-line from reflected light images using systems such as the OPSA, Split, and WipFrag analyzers. Even laboratory analysis of coarse particles has been difficult because of the large amount of sample required to insure statistical significance of the results. During the past decades laboratory 3D characterization of particles from energy and mineral resources by X-ray tomography has been demonstrated and used to good advantage [1, 2]. 3D X-ray tomographic analysis had its origin in the medical services industry; it is used to provide internal images of the human body and now has also been developed for non-medical applications [3]. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the cone-beam geometry micro-CT system. In our case X-rays from a microfocus X-ray generator are partially attenuated by the sample (a packed bed of particles) that is made to rotate in equal steps in a full circle about a single axis of the particle sample. At each rotational position, the surviving X-ray photons are detected by a planar two-dimensional array (image intensifier) large enough to contain the shadow of the specimen. These two dimensional projection images are collected using conventional video technology. The video signal for each projection is then converted to a two-dimensional digital array by an image processing system. Finally, a three-dimensional image is reconstructed from the collected set of projection images. With the availability of automated high speed X-ray tomography [4] it now seems possible to do plant-site particle characterization at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Two years ago the general features of the St. Joseph Lead Company's zine-smelting process were described.' At that time the discussion was limited to a description of the production of high-purity electrothermic zinc oxide. The present paper will describe the commercial production of electrothermic zinc metal. Since a fairly complete description of the plant of the Josephtowlz smelter was given in the earlier paper, the brief recapitulation given here will be limited to mention of additional equip-ment recently installed and a bare outline of the preparatory process. The raw material is zinc sulphide concentrate received from the company's mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. Wind-box gases pass through air coolers before filtering in a 1440-bag Dracco unit, and thence to stack. The Dracco fume is mixed with Cottrell dust, from roaster gas cleaning, and sent to the leach plant, where it is roasted (SO² to acid plant) and leached with sulphuric acid to recover, as end products, lead sulphate, zinc sulphate and cadmium.

Two years ago the general features of the St. Joseph Lead Company's zine-smelting process were described.' At that time the discussion was limited to a description of the production of high-purity electrothermic zinc oxide. The present paper will describe the commercial production of electrothermic zinc metal. Since a fairly complete description of the plant of the Josephtowlz smelter was given in the earlier paper, the brief recapitulation given here will be limited to mention of additional equip-ment recently installed and a bare outline of the preparatory process. No processo de produção de aço o maior volume de custo está na carga metálica, que é composta pelo gusa líquido produzido nos altos fornos e a sucata metálica oriunda dos descartes de processos produtivos da indústria. Visando atingir o custo ótimo de produção, foi definida uma produção dos altos fornos menor que a média histórica da empresa, e a compra de placas no mercado como complemento para suprir a demanda da laminação. Desta forma a otimização da utilização do gusa líquido se tornou primordial para o aumento da produção de placas, redução do custo de produção da metalurgia e consequentemente redução da necessidade de compras de placas no mercado. Com este novo cenário foi necessário aumentar a utilização de sucata pesada e reduzir o tempo de preparação de caixas para garantir a carga no peso e tempo necessário para atendimento dos conversores. As ações tomadas possibilitaram a redução do gusa na carga metálica de 84% para 82% atingido o resultado proposto redução de custo e aumento de produção de placas.

The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. Sterry Hunt, called the meeting to order, and after a few introductory remarks concerning the importance of theoretical and speculative science, which often involves principles of the highest economic value, and, more than all that, serves to enlarge our conceptions of the universe, and ennoble us, by the cultivation which it affords to our most exalted faculties, proceeded to discuss some points in the chemistry of the atmosphere. It is known that there is in the crust of the earth a great amount of oxidized carbon, not only in the shape of coal, but also in the graphite or plumbago of the crystalline rocks, in the various bituminous shales or pyroschists, which are found in all succeeding rock-formations, and also in the forms of bitumen and petroleum. All the analogies of nature lead us to conclude that these various carbonaceous substances have had an organic origin, and have been generated by the deoxidation of carbonic acid, a process effected by the growing plant, and attended with the liberation of oxygen. He showed that the carbon of a layer of coal covering the whole earth&apos;s surface to the thickness of one meter, would, in its production from carbonic dioxide, liberate an amount of oxygen equal to that now present in our atmosphere. But bituminous coal contains also a large amount of hydrogen, derived from the deoxidation of water, which implies the liberation of a farther portion of oxygen. The amount from this latter source would equal, for the various coals and asphalts, from one-eighth to one-fourth, and, for the petroleums, one-half of that set free in the deoxidation of the carbon which these hydrocarbonaceous bodies contain. From what we know of the composition of the stratified rocks, it is probable that they include an amount of deoxidized carbon and hydrogen many times greater than that contained in a layer of coal one meter in thickness, and, consequently, that the disengaged oxygen in past ages must have far exceeded that now present in our atmosphere.
