"In partnership with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and with support from International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC), Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) organized a workshop on quality assurance (QA) practices for acceptance of post-grouted drilled shafts in conjunction with DFI’s 40th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations. The 1½-day workshop was held on October 15-16, 2015 at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, CA.Post-grouting, in the context of this workshop and report, refers to the alternative design and construction of base-grouted drilled shafts wherein a grout distribution system is installed during construction and used to grout the base under pressure after the drilled shaft concrete has gained adequate strength, resulting in a stiffer axial-compression load-displacement relationship and additional possible ground improvement effects.The primary goals of the workshop were to•?Identify and summarize the state of the practice for design, construction, inspection, verification, acceptance criteria, reliability and performance of post-grouting.•?Identify gaps and needs in quality assurance that should be addressed for successful use of post-grouting.This report is structured to follow the workshop program: workshop presentations outlined the state of practice and views from owners, engineers and contractors on acceptance of post grouting methods for drilled shafts; and subsequent workshop discussions attended by a small invited group of participants focused on identifying areas of agreement and disagreement on post-grouting best practices, acceptance criteria, design and verification procedures, and inspection requirements. A partial list of attendees of the open and closed sessions is provided as Appendix A, and copies of presentations are included as Appendix B.FHWA and Caltrans are the primary audiences for this report, and its content will be used to develop a roadmap for deploying the findings into policy and practice. The secondary audience is the broader industry group, and the report content will be disseminated in a variety of formats."

The Estates at Acqualina located in Sunny Isles Beach, FL, is comprised of two, ocean-front, 50-story, luxury towers with podiums and villas. With city regulations now requesting that above-grade floors be limited to commercial or residential units, parking facilities for the tower structures were situated within two levels of underground basement parking. However, ensuring dry excavation through south Florida’s highly pervious limestone, immediately adjacent to the beach where the groundwater table is very shallow, can be extremely challenging and costly for developers. In recent years, significant advances have been made to overcome this challenge with the innovative use of deep soil mixing to create a “dry hole”, assisting in the construction of foundations and underground usable space for parking, storage, etc. The “dry hole” system includes a soil mix bottom seal, with soil mix secant pile walls in combination with auger cast deep foundation elements to support the future structure. This approach enables groundwater control to greater depths than can be achieved by conventional sheetpiling and dewatering. For the Estates at Acqualina, a successful turnkey, design-build joint venture between two foundation and geotechnical contractors resulted in a dry excavation to 34 ft (10.4 m) below grade and to a record- breaking auger cast pile depth of 182.3ft (55.6 m), all within an aggressive 26-week schedule to deliver the “dry hole” excavation for the first tower. This presentation will discuss the logistics, quality control, design, and safety for the different techniques involved. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The Estates of Acqualina is a pair of 50-story luxury towers located on Sunny Isles Beach in Florida with a two-level underground basement for parking. The project’s location just steps away from the Atlantic Ocean, geology, and high-water table created a challenging project. The owner, Trump Group, contracted the joint venture of HJ Foundation and Hayward Baker (HJ/HB) to design-assist-build a system to control the groundwater, allowing the 2-story underground parking structure to be constructed. In order to accomplish this task, the JV utilized an installation technique known as deep soil mixing. This technique mixes the in situ material with a cement slurry to create a very impermeable material called “soilcrete”.

"Waste electric and electronic equipment currently comprises the fastest-growing waste stream in the world, but at the same time it is seen as an important source of metals for the recycling industry. E-waste is usually treated pyrometallurgically, with hydrometallurgical methods used to a lesser extent. This paper reports the results of research on the selective recovery of copper from smelted low-value electronic waste. Pyrometallurgical pretreatment of the scrap allowed the removal of plastics and the increase of metal content in the material. The obtained alloy of copper, zinc, tin and silver was a multiphase solid consisting of two brass phases and inclusions rich in iron, lead and silver. Copper alloy was further anodically dissolved in ammoniacal chloride solution. It resulted in high degradation of the material and accumulation of the metals mainly in the slime. The slime was then leached in acid or ammoniacal chloride and sulfate solutions followed by selective copper electrowinning. Hydrochloric acid was the most efficient solvent for the slime, but ammoniacal solutions were more selective for copper. Copper could be leached with 96 to 100 percent and 87 percent efficiency from the slime by the chloride and sulfate solutions, respectively. Copper with 90 to 99 percent purity at current efficiency of 42 to 76 percent was obtained from the acid solutions, while copper with 98 to 99 percent purity at current efficiency of 60 to 86 percent was deposited from the ammoniacal baths. IntroductionObsolete electrical and electronic equipment makes up the fastest-growing waste stream in the world (Baldé et al., 2015), due not only to the introduction of wider ranges of new types and models of a variety of electronic products but also to the shortening of their life-spans, sometimes referred to as planned obsolescence by producers (Keeble, 2013). About 42 million tons of electronic waste, or e-waste, are estimated to have been generated globally in 2014 (Baldé et al., 2015), and it is expected that in the European Union alone the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) stream will reach more than 12 million tons by 2020 (European Commission, 2015). Accurate evaluation of e-waste generation (Wang et al., 2013) and its global transport (Breivik et al., 2014) is difficult, mainly due to a lack of high-quality data related to its market and socio-economic dynamics.Many countries introduced legislation to control e-waste flow, collection and recycling. For example, Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment (European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, 2012) obliges all E.U. members from 2016 to maintain a minimum collection rate of 45 percent of the total weight of WEEE collected. From 2019, the minimum collection rate to be achieved annually shall be 65 percent of the average weight of electronics placed on the domestic market in the three preceding years, or alternatively 85 percent of WEEE generated in the territory of the particular member."

Sand and gravel resources of the southern coastal region of British Columbia may be linked to various episodes of Wisconsin glaciation. During Wisconsin and probably earlier times, the Fraser Lowland and coastal areas were subjected to repeated glaciations separated by non-glacial intervals. Each major glaciation was accompanied by isostatic and eustatic changes in sea level up to 200 m or more. As a result, the Lowland was covered by the sea during much of Quaternary time. Because the Fraser Lowland is surrounded on two sides by high mountain ranges, glaciers terminated in the sea during their maximum advance. Therefore, meltwaters released during deglaciation, together wit h retreating glacier ice, could produce widespread and extensive sand and gravel deposits both along the coast and throughout the Fraser Lowland and adjacent areas.

Tower crane layout (TCL) is a typical construction site layout (CSL) problem, which is suitable for a wide range of work assignments and site conditions. Tower crane is one of the key facilities for vertical and horizontal transportation of materials, especially for heavy prefabrication units such as steel beams, ready mixed concrete, prefabricated elements and large panel formwork such as machinery and equipment, and a wide variety of other building materials within a construction site. However, it is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem to determine the locations of tower cranes with materials quantity supply and demand for engineers. Swarm intelligence (SI) was very popular and widely used in many complex optimization problems which was collective behaviour of social systems such as honey bees (bee algorithm, BA) and birds (particle swarm optimization, PSO). This study applied a hybrid swarm algorithm namely particle bee algorithm (PBA) based on a particular intelligent behaviour of honey bee and bird swarms by integrates theirs advantages. This study compares the performance of PBA with BA and PSO for a proposed hypothetical construction engineering of TCL with materials quantity supply and demand problem. Results show that PBA performs better performance than the mentioned algorithms on a proposed hypothetical TCL problem.

From October 1943 to March 1944, the Bureau of Mines conducted core drilling at the Victory fluorspar mine, Hardin County, Ill. to test the Fredonia limestone and the included sub-Rosiclare sandstone zone beneath the existing stopes. Twenty-one vertical holes were drilled to an average depth of 60 feet. Ore was penetrated in six holes. Since its discovery in 1927, the Victory mine has produced approximately 5 percent of the total fluorspar mined in the United states after that date. The ore discovered in the early mine development is now exhausted, except that contained in pillars drifting to the northeast has partly developed one substantial ore body, and company drilling has indicated another nearby. The increasing need for fluorite for war use in 1943 suggested the desirability of mining the pillars, provided it could be established that no ore beds existed below the stopes or in areas to which access would be obtained through the present workings. This work describes the work accomplished during the project and presents the data obtained.

"The self-fluxing iron ores of Alabama are the foundation of the thriving iron and steel industry of that State. In addition to these deposits of self fluxing ores there are seams containing practically the same percentages of iron but too much silica. These ores at present are valueless, but if they could be concentrated by reducing the silica content, the ore reserves of the Birmingham district would be greatly augmented. A detailed report on the iron-ore deposits of the district, describing the types of ore and their extent, has been published.In forwarding its mineral conservation policies the United States Bureau of Mines has given some attention to the siliceous ores of this district.The low cost of gravity concentration gives this process first rank in the beneficiation of iron ores. For this reason many experimenters have tried to concentrate the Alabama iron ores on tables. In the face of the early failures a new trial has been made and the results have justified the effort.In this work more attention than formerly has been given to the physical, properties of the ores. The removable siliceous gangue is in the form of oolitic grains which ""shell"" out like corn, leaving the hematite as rich high-grade ""slime"" and as clean granular grains. The ""slime concentrate"" may be recovered by well known desliming processes. The oolitic grains and granular hematite are separated on tables."

This Bureau of Mines report discusses recent applications of water in-fusion technology to control dust in U.S coal mines and presents recommended guidelines for determining coal seam infusibility. The techniques required to use water infusion are presented in detail. A Bureau case study indicated that water infusion reduced dust levels by 68 pct along a longwall plow face, bringing this section into compliance with the Z.0-mg/m3 Federal dust standard. Similar studies conducted by Occidental Research Corp. under a Bureau contract show water infusion at two longwall double-drum shearer operations produced dust reductions ranging from 38 to 50 pct. Water infusion was found to be cost effective, aver-aging 5 cents per ton.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a set of guidelines for determining the distribution of product-of-combustion fire sensors in underground mines. Sensor spacing is defined in terms of sensor alarm threshold, ventilation flow rate, and mine entry dimensions. Sensor spacing guidelines are presented for detection of fires from two primary combustibles, coal and wood, which are common to the majority of underground mines. The guidelines are based on data from full-scale and intermediate-scale fire tests conducted by the Bureau of Mines.

Os problemas gerados no processamento do aço inoxidável AISI 316 são um grande problema do setor metal mecânico, por exemplo, no processo de usinagem, onde o material sofre altas taxas de deformação plástica e elevadas temperaturas na região de contato ferramenta-peça. Além disso, a adesão de aço inoxidável em materiais de maior dureza, no caso a ferramenta, também são problemas enfrentados. Neste trabalho foi feito um estudo qualitativo em escala laboratorial do contato entre um material de maior dureza (aço AISI M2 nitretado a plasma) e o aço AISI 316. Foram realizados ensaios de microdureza Vickers e rugosidade afim de caracterizar as amostras de aço AISI M2. Ensaios tribológicos do tipo Ball-on-Plate foram realizados com a finalidade de determinar o coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo para os pares tribológicos formados. Análises feitas via MEV/EDS foram feitas tanto nas trilhas geradas nas superfícies das amostras quanto nas esferas, para detectar pontos de adesão, deformação plástica e transferência de material entre as duas superfícies. Ficou comprovado que a nitretação a plasma com gaiola catódica proporcionou um menor coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo quando posta em contato com a esfera de aço inoxidável, bem como foi possível observar a formação de uma menor quantidade de pontos de adesão de aço inoxidável para esta superfície.

THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultirnatc cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of .the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development. A aplicação e viabilidade de uso de aglomerados constituídos de carvão e minério de ferro, denominado Ferro-Coque, vêm recentemente sendo proposta como alternativa inovadora para a redução das emissões de CO2 e consumo de energia no alto-forno. No presente estudo visou-se investigar o comportamento de carbonização de aglomerados produzidos a partir de 3 diferentes carvões e minério de ferro. Briquetes de carvão/minério foram produzidos em laboratório. Esses briquetes foram submetidos à carbonização em forno laboratorial e em termobalança. As amostras de Ferro-Coque produzidas foram caracterizadas via microscopia ótica e eletrônica. Realizou-se também a caracterização mecânica dos briquetes através de ensaios de compressão e tamboramento. Os experimentos termogravimétricos permitiram uma avaliação detalhada das perdas de massa devido a cada uma das etapas de carbonização. As características morfológicas revelaram diferenças importantes entre os diferentes briquetes testados. A resistência mecânica dos briquetes mostrou uma dependência importante, com a temperatura e tipo de carvão utilizado.

A 4-component model for settling slurry pipe flow has been previously described by Wilson et al (2006) and Sellgren et al (2014) to predict pipeline friction loss (hydraulic pressure gradient) over a range of slurry compositions: from fine to coarse particle size, narrow to broad particle size distribution, and low to high solids concentration. The method applies a weighted average of established pipeline models for various settling slurry flow regimes, according to the volume fraction of solids falling within the applicable size range for each model. Further development of the model was undertaken by Visintainer et al (2017a, 2017b), based on a comprehensive set of laboratory tests in 203 mm (8 inch) and 103 mm (4 inch) pipelines, and it was also adapted to the modelling of slurry pump performance derates. However, this work was all performed with solids having a specific gravity near 2.65, as is typical for many mineral processing and dredging applications. The goal of the present work is to test the applicability of these models for settling slurries having a higher solids specific gravity, as may often be seen in the mineral processing of iron ore deposits. To that end, a test program was carried out in a 103 mm (4 inch) pipe loop using various compositions of an iron ore product having a solids specific gravity of 4.75 and containing both coarse and fine solids. By screening and flushing operations, a range of particle size distributions were created having different proportions of the coarse and fine elements. In all, 19 tests were performed with d50 particle sizes ranging from 50 μm to 3.2 mm and delivered solids concentrations from 10 per cent to 43 per cent by volume. Particle size distributions varied from very narrow to very broad, with d85/d50 ratios ranging from 1.75 to 26. Pipeline pressure gradient and pump performance data were collected and used to test the applicability of the previously developed 4- component models and to propose improvements to the models for the handling of high-density solids.

The Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex is Anglo American PlatinumÆs only open cast operation exploiting the Platreef. The Platreef, which extends along the basal contact of the Bushveld Complex, is geologically and mineralogically a much more complex orebody than the Merensky and UG-2 reefs. Changes in the footwall and the genesis of the Platreef translate into a number of rock types being present. These rock types vary in hardness and recovery potential and present challenges to metallurgical staff trying to optimise the concentrator. A true understanding of the implications of treating these rock types is required if the maximum value from this orebody is to be obtained.In order to more accurately forecast production and incorporate ore variation in the mine plan and comminution and flotation circuits, a geometallurgical approach to managing the operation has been used and is being further developed.CITATION:Schouwstra, R, De Vaux, D, Muzondo, T and Prins, C, 2013. DUPING the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of "lime-roasting" of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,' and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art. The elimination of the sulphur-content of galena has been always the most troublesome part of the smelting-process, being both costly in the operation and wasteful of silver and lead. Previous to the introduction of the Huntington-Heberlein process at Pertusola, Italy, it was effected by a variety of methods. In the treatment of non-argentiferous galena concentrate, the smelting was done by the roast-reduction method (roasting in reverberatory furnace and smelting in blast-furnace); the roast-reaction method, applied in reverberatory furnaces; and the roast-reaction method, applied in Scotch hearths 2 Precipitation-smelting, simple, had practically gone out of use, although its reactions enter into the modern blast-furnace practice, as do also those of the roast-reaction method.

The model originally proposed by Austin, et al., has been modified in the light of further investigation of the breakage laws in SAG milling. The model uses a fully-mixed reactor for short L/D mills and calculates the breakage of small particles by the nipping action of balls and pebbles. The autogenous self-breakage of larger lumps is treated as an effective means of fast breaking rock and much slower breaking rock. Experiments show that fast autogenous breakage can be treated as a first-order breakage with an overall specific breakage rate which incorporates fracture and chipping. Similarly, slow breakage incorporates fracture and abrasion. Autogenous breakage is cushioned by the accumulation of fine material. Simulation results are compared to results from tests in a 2 m diameter continuous pilot-scale SAG mill. Future work is discussed.

"The Éléonore mine, located in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec, generates a gold bearing flotation concentrate rich in pyrrhotite. Direct leaching of the finely ground concentrate results in high cyanide consumptions and poor recoveries, so effective pre-treatment to passivate the pyrrhotite is required before leaching. Following a number of process upsets at the mine, test work was performed to better understand the requirements for passivation so a more effective operational strategy could be implemented. This paper outlines the testing and implementation of the new strategy at Éléonore.ÉLÉONORE CONCENTRATOR The Éléonore mine is located 800 km north of Montreal, in the James Bay Region of Quebec, Canada. The ore, containing gold disseminated in sulfide minerals and free fine gold in silicate gangue, is crushed in a two-stage crusher plant before being ground in a single 9,000 kW ball mill. The ball mill is in closed circuit, with about 25% of the cyclone underflow passing through a gravity plant with two, 48” Knelson concentrators. Gold recovery in the gravity circuit varies between 15 and 20%, with gravity concentrate leached daily in an Acacia intensive leach reactor. Cyclone overflow, at a target P80 of 65 microns, flows to the flotation plant where the gold bearing sulfide minerals, mainly pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite, are recovered to concentrate with a mass pull of about 5%. The flotation concentrate, typically containing between 80 and 120 g/t of gold, is thickened and finely ground using a 1500 kW Isa Mill. The finely ground concentrate is diluted, to generate a slurry with about 32% solids by weight, before feeding the leach plant. Initially the concentrate slurry is pre-treated with oxygen and lead nitrate, to passivate the sulphide minerals before cyanide is added for gold dissolution. Gold is recovered from the leached slurry using carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The flotation tailings are also thickened and gold is recovered in a dedicated leach-CIP plant."

High-nugget gold orebodies are difficult to model in 3D because samples from diamond drill core are generally too small to provide reliable estimates of the gold content of the larger body of rock, and therefore interpolation of gold assay values between drill holes is also unreliable. As a result, gold resources are generally underestimated in areas of high nugget. In practice, proxies for gold mineralisation, such as presence of alteration, specific structures or high vein density, have been used by geologists to predict rocks which are favourable for mineralisation. However, there has been no automated method for combining the predictive capabilities of several proxies, except by human judgement.We have been developing a method to combine several different types of geological features or geochemical analyses into a single measure using conditional probability. Conditional probability provides a meaningful numerical measure for the favourability of rocks for containing high-grade gold mineralisation. This measure can be interpolated in the exploration space, providing a sound basis for a 3D model of the orebody. We have developed this technique using data from the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, which is a high-nugget orebody hosted in a structurally complex Archaean greenstone belt and which has historically proved to be a very challenging orebody to model.CITATION:Hill, E J, Nugus, M J, Clark, F, Oliver, N H S, Cleverley, J S and Carswell, J T, 2013.
