"Two in vitro systems are being developed to model initial stages in the interaction of respired dusts with the acinar region of the lung. Incubation of quartz and kaolin with dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, suppresses the prompt C)1otoxicity of both dusts as measured by in vitro enzyme release from pulmonary macrophages or assay by erythrocyte hemolysis. Additional data is presented to quantitate the detoxification of quartz and kaolin by dipalmitoyl lecithin. Subsequent incubation of lecithin treated dusts with phospholipase enzymes results in partial to complete restoration of the assayed cytotoxic potentials, dependent on the lipase activity applied, the incubation time, and the mineral. Restored cytotoxic potential is due to removal of the prophylactic lecithin surface coating and/or due to residual lysolecithin which is produced by the partial enzymatic digestion of lecithin. Data is presented on the contribution of each mechanism to the restored toxicity. Again, this is dependent on the mineral used, the lipase activity applied, and digestion time. Additionally, a system is under development to challenge pulmonary macrophages in culture with native and surfactant treated dusts. A preliminary test of the dipalmitoyl lecithin - quartz rabbit pulmonary macrophage system is presented to illustrate the method.IntroductionRespirable quartz dust exposure is known to cause librotic lung disease; respirable clay dust exposure is less likely to do so as indicated by epidemiologic data on occupational exposures and by animal model studiesP·7) The hypothesis that damage to pulmonary macrophages in the acinar region of the lung by respired dusts is an early event in the disease process requires consideration because kaolin clay and quartz dusts are comparably cytotoxic to pulmonary macrophages in vitro.(3•9)"

The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.

Total carbon (TC) is sometimes used to measure or characterize diesel particulate matter (DPM) in occupational settings such as underground mines. DPM samples are collected on quartz fiber filters. When using quartz fiber ?lters, adsorption of gas phase organic carbon (OC) has been reported, causing a positive bias in the particulate TC results (adsorption artifact). Most of the data on the sampling artifacts and corrections apply to environmental air sampling, where samples are collected at a much higher filter face velocity and the OC concentrations are generally much lower relative to occupational sampling. In this study, we investigated the effects of adsorption artifact on samples from occupational settings. Samples were collected with and without denuders to determine the amount of gas phase OC collected and the accuracy of certain corrections. In underground stone mines, the adsorption artifact was found to positively bias the particulate TC by greater than 20% for filter loadings below 25 µg/cm2 TC (8-h time weighted average) 262 µg/m3). The tandem ?lter correction reduced the effect of the artifact, as high as 60% of the TC value, to less than 11% for laboratory data. It also significantly reduced the effect of the artifact obtained for field samples.

Continuous airflow monitoring can improve the safety of the underground work force by ensuring the uninterrupted and controlled distribution of mine ventilation to all working areas. Air velocity measurements vary significantly and can change rapidly depending on the exact measurement location and, in particular, due to the presence of obstructions in the air stream. Air velocity must be measured at locations away from obstructions to avoid the vortices and eddies that can produce inaccurate readings. Further, an uninterrupted measurement path cannot always be guaranteed when using continuous airflow monitors due to the presence of nearby equipment, personnel, roof falls and rib rolls. Effective use of these devices requires selection of a minimum distance from an obstacle, such that an air velocity measurement can be made but not affected by the presence of that obstacle. This paper investigates the impacts of an obstruction on the behavior of downstream airflow using a numerical CFD model calibrated with experimental test results from underground testing. Factors including entry size, obstruction size and the inlet or incident velocity are examined for their effects on the distributions of airflow around an obstruction. A relationship is developed between the minimum measurement distance and the hydraulic diameters of the entry and the obstruction. A final analysis considers the impacts of continuous monitor location on the accuracy of velocity measurements and on the application of minimum measurement distance guidelines.

This paper is based upon a review of studies of mostly Canadian mining companies in Chile, northern Canada, Tanzania, Guatemala, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In spite of often well-meaning efforts most mining firms produce wealth in developing areas that largely benefit those immediately involved, sometimes neighboring communities, and often those in the governing strata. Typically mining takes place in enclaves and fosters enclave development, rather than the kind of inclusive wealth development favored by the recently UN published Inclusive Wealth Report. One way by which mining operations can foster more inclusive wealth development is to adopt much broader approaches towards the construction of the various physical and social infrastructures ? roads, water, electricity, health services, schools, security ? required for their own operations by collaborating with diverse regional, provincial, and/or national agencies and businesses to develop these infrastructures for larger populations and areas beyond the immediate sites where they are operating. Established mining firms can also foster more inclusive wealth development by establishing more formal, collaborative relationships with artisanal miners.

It is well known that clays affect the flotation performance, and many of the refractory gold ores around the world contain clay minerals. Therefore, an ore sample from the Carlin Trend was selected for this study as these ores contain large quantities of clays. The presence of clay minerals in an ore makes it susceptible to a range of variables, such as the solution chemistry determined by pH and the chemistry of the rheology modifiers. The viscosity of the ore slurry was measured as a function of solid concentration and particle size distribution, in addition to using different rheology modifiers and pH regulators. The results were correlated with the ore flotation performance. It was found that various reagents known commonly as dispersants or rheology modifiers have different effects on the ore slurry viscosity. This study revealed that the gold flotation recovery can be improved by changing the pulp rheology.CITATION:Farrokhpay, S, Bradshaw, D and Dunne, R, 2013. "The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. This report covers the investigation of the MacArthur copper deposit and several adjacent claims in the Mason mining district; Lyon County, Nev. (fig. 1). As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was begun first on the MacArthur claims. Work was done later on some adjacent claims in the immediate area, as shown by figure 2. Field work was begun by the Bureau of Mines on January 16, 1950, and completed on October 25, 1950. Eight diamond-drill holes were completed, for an aggregate of 3,414 linear feet, Analyses were made of' each drilling interval. The report includes a brief history of the district and a description of the deposits and of the work done by the Bureau of Mines.

AT the Eagle mine, near Gilman, Colorado, where the Empire Zinc Company have installed an underground mill, transportation problems were comparatively simple. A railway siding on the Denver and Rio Grande railway is equipped with an unloading dock or platform at the portal of their service incline adit to the mill. This 18-degree incline is approximately 600 feet long from the unloading track to the head of the mill skipway. For the Big Missouri mill, upwards of 2,500 tons of material and equipment had to be trucked from tidewater at Stewart, B.C., a distance of 21 miles to the Big Missouri camp at elevation 2,800. From that point, this freight had to be moved either over or through the Big Missouri ridge, rising to elevation 3,450, to its final location 800 feet from the surface between elevations 2,150 and 2,350. Immediately after leaving the government dock at Stewart, the road crosses the International boundary line into Hyder, Alaska, and then follows a water grade for eleven miles along the lower stretches of the Salmon river. leaving the river, the road climbs for two miles before crossing back into British Columbia territory at Silver Heights, and then continues for another mile and a half to where the Big Missouri road branches off from the main road to the Premier mine. For a distance of four miles from the junction of the roads, the Missouri road is very narrow, with many sharp curves and with irregular up and down pitches and grades up to 25 per cent until it reaches the Summit. From there on, a fairly easy grade leads a mile and a half to the end of the road on Joker Plats. In winter, the last stretch of road is subject to heavy snow drifting, especially through a narrow funnel-shaped gulch, known as 'The Gap', where the snow may pile up to a depth of over twenty feet.

In 1999, the Mineral Development Centre of CVRD (CDM) acquired a flotation device referred to as Mini Pilot Plant (MPP), which is able to run continuous flotation tests with drill core samples. Since then this equipment has been used to define the flotation circuit and process conditions during the pre-feasibility phase of CVRDÆs copper sulfide projects. Until now, the MPP results had not been validated for an industrial flotation operation. The present work consists of a comparison and correlation of the results from a flotation MPP and an industrial plant. In order to make this comparison, an industrial plant was completely sampled and the feed ore was tested on bench scale and on a MPP. The metallurgical and mass balances of each test were used for the comparison.

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a by-product from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations and represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process.

This paper presents a succinct overview of the Canadian coal situation. The topics treated specifically are: the rates of growth of coal supply and demand; the relationship between the coal and electricity generation industries which form its dominant market; the unique impact of nuclear generation on coal demand in Canada; and finally, a view of the developing technologies which will create opportunities for growth in the coal industry of the future. Resources The most important element of coal supply is the resource. The disposition of Canada's coal resources has a marked effect on their utilization, since industry in Canada has not generally developed around coal-fields. The distance from the major industrial centres of Ontario and Quebec to the major region of coal supply in Alberta and British Columbia has crested an economic barrier to the expansion of the use of domestic coal.

Introduction The Outokumpu copper mine is situated in eastern Finland, 50 kilometers west of the city of Joensuu or 225 kilometers directly north of the city of Viborg (Viipuri), which is situated at the eastern end of the gulf of Finland (Figure 1). The ore-body was discovered in 1910 by Dr. Otto Trüstedt after two years of careful, scientifically-directed, search. During the early period of development of the mine, the ore was treated locally and the copper re-covered by an electrolytic process. Now the ore is concentrated by tables and by flotation. The concentrates are shipped to Germany for refining. In 1929 the mine produced 150,000 tons of ore from which between 20,000 and 25,000 tons of flotation concentrates containing 20 per cent copper were produced. Profits in 1929 were approximately half a million dollars, but the present price of copper will affect very seriously the profits for 1930. The ore reserves are given as between 7 and 8 million tons (1). The grade of ore is stated to be 4 percent to 6 percent copper, with a little zinc.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo das propriedades ópticas de filmes finos de Nitreto de Silício, depositados por Magnetron Sputtering Reativo sobre substrato de vidro Soda-Cálcio.

The electrokinetic properties of MgO have been utilized to simultaneously filter suspended solids and remove trace amounts of dissolved heavy metals from synthetic mine water. Greater than 95 pct removal of metals from influent at neutral pH containing 1 to 6 mg/L of dissolved Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn can be routinely achieved by filtering through a granular bed of MgO at flow rates typical of rapid sand filtration (0.3 cm/s). Filtrate concentrations of most metals can be maintained below 0.1 mg/L for 160 bed volumes or more loading. The more mobile metals (those with larger solubility products) are more difficult to remove, and are strongly bonded to the MgO granules so that chemical stripping with chelating agent is required to clean the bed. Less mobile ions are easily removed by the filter and are effectively stripped by conventional filter backwashing. The fraction of metals recovered by chemically stripping the loaded MgO filters correlates to the zero points of charge of the metals. This process may be applicable to removal and recovery of trace amounts of heavy metals in mine drainage that is partly neutralized by liming. Also, since many of these metals are critical and strategic, the technique can be adapted not only to recycle process water from mineral and milling waste streams, but also to reclaim their metal values.

"The macrosegregation patterns and convective behavior of a Pb-5wt%Sb-35wt%Sn alloy are studied using new numerical treatments of solid particle motion and of transport phenomena occurring during the solidification of ternary metal systems. At this composition, the solidification which occurs while the local liquid composition is in the (Pb)-(SbSn) binary eutectic trough has a significant effect on these phenomena. The effects of this solidification path on fluid flow and macrosegregation are compared to the more familiar binary alloy patterns and the effect of solid particle transport is evaluated. The final predictions of macrosegregation are compared to measured composition profiles. IntroductionThe macroscopic maldistribution of alloy constituents during solidification, commonly called macrosegregation, is a defect which occurs in real metal processing systems. This nonuniformity of species distribution, especially when it forms a high composition gradient or a poor distribution of secondary phases, can lead to areas of high stress concentration, which contribute to cracking during extrusion or forging of wrought alloys or when an as-cast piece is severely loaded in service [1, 2]. Macrosegregation studies in binary systems have become quite common since the introduction of single-domain numerical models which feature one set of conservation equations and boundary conditions for an entire, fixed computational domain containing solid, liquid and multiphase regions. A complete review up to 1995 has been presented by Prescott and Incropera [3]. However, most commercial alloys generally have more than two species in amounts significant enough to affect the convective flows which lead to macrosegregation and other defects. The formation of secondary solid phases, including eutectic and peritectic reactions, also may occur in commercial metal alloys and should be treated using appropriate thermodynamic models."

TWO zinc concentrating mills are operated by the St. Joseph Lead Co. in St. Lawrence County, N. Y. The Edwards mill is operating at present only sixteen hours a day treating 400 tons daily. The metallurgy at Edwards presents no unusual problems therefore this discussion is mainly limited to the metallurgy of the Balmat ore. The Balmat mill has a capacity of 1,250 tons per day and the operating crew consists of three shift bosses each with five millmen per shift. Two crusher operators work on each of two shifts and one cleanup man on day shift. The repair crew is made up of a foreman and three repairmen, one of the repairmen being capable of taking over any operating job in the mill from shift boss down. Each millman is capable of handling the next job in line and several men in the yard crew are broken into handling the start-off job in the mill so that temporary shortages of men do not cause extensive overtime.
