Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd - Asia Pacific Iron Ore's (formerly Portman Iron Ore Limited) K deposit (Dowd's Hill), at its Koolyanobbing operation in Western Australia, hosts enriched magnetite mineralisation below the presently mined haematite-goethite ore zone. Two distinct northwest-southeast elongated, highly magnetic anomalous bodies that dip to the north-east appear to be sourced by this deeper mineralisation. Magnetic modelling indicates significant remanent magnetisation with Qratios around 1.5, directed shallow down. The north-west anomaly is overlain by a ridge of uneconomic banded iron formation (BIF) and the present waste dump, whereas the south-east body was partly exposed during ongoing mining of overlying haematite-goethite ore. Sections of the magnetite mineralisation in this south-east anomaly were intersected previously by diamond drill holes. Review of the historic cores identified potential magnetite enrichment, with grades and mineralogy that might be amenable to beneficiation. A first-phase reverse circulation drilling program was designed to further delineate the trend and extent of the two anomalies. The following magnetite mineralisation assemblages are recognised from cores, reverse circulation (RC) drill cuttings and pit mapping of the south-east magnetic body: higher-grade magnetite-haematite ¦ goethite and magnetite ¦ pyrite and lower-grade, recrystallised magnetite-quartz (BIF), magnetite-carbonate, magnetite-talc and minor magnetite-bearing mafic schist. Disseminated specularite is locally present in theassemblages. Talc-schist and massive pyrite occur along the footwall contact. Magnetic susceptibility measured from drill chips within the magnetite-enriched zones reveals an apparent susceptibility values range of 0.2 to 1.3 SI. Preliminary results from Satmagan and Davis tube recovery analysis shows that the magnetite content in these mineralised zones correlate well with existing geophysical data and magnetic susceptibility measurements.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a simple method of producing low-phosphorus hematite concentrates from certain submarginal southeastern iron ores. The investigation was undertaken to obtain additional information on the Clinton iron ore outcrops at the southwestern extremity of the Birmingham district of Alabama and to assist in the development of operating techniques that would make it profitable to use the marginal ores of this area for blast-furnace feed. Batch and continuous pilot-plant tests demonstrated that a relatively simple wet scrubbing treatment) followed by a desliming operation to reject argillaceous (clayey) gangue, consistently yielded a marketable granular hematite product. Iron losses were relatively high but could be tolerated in view of the low treatment cost.

A study of the application of mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation has been carried out, focusing on efficiently activating mine tailings, reducing alkali consumption, decreasing curing time and improving compressive strength. Firstly, the effect of temperature on the alkali activation of mine tailings was studied. Secondly, the impact of additives, i.e., calcium hydroxide and aluminum oxide, on the compressive strength of samples was investigated. Thirdly, the impact of forming pressure on sample strength was studied. Test results showed that unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 40 MPa was achieved with the geopolymerization products through optimization. Finally, to elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism of mine tailings, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including SEM/EDX, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy were used to investigate the microstructure and the elemental and phase composition of the geopolymerization products. The findings of the present work provide a practical method for applying mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation.

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). Up to one half of neodymium and praseodymium production, key ingredients in permanent magnets, is produced illegally. About 60% of cobalt production, critical in lithium-ion batteries and other applications, comes from central African states, and much of it is produced illegally. Tantalum, important in modern electronics, is also primarily sourced from central Africa and, again, much of it illegally. Illegal mineral production, as exemplified here, is often used to fund armed conflict. Furthermore, it is typically conducted with scant regard for human rights and environmental protection. It also leads to depressed prices which in turn limits the possibility of legitimate producers entering the market. Systems of traceability and provenance, along with cooperative supply chain participants can limit the production of illegitimate material and thereby improve conditions in the countries of origin and reduce downward pressure on prices.

The strength of rocks and soil is a crucial design parameter in engineering projects, and it can be determined through various test methods such as uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and shear strength. The point load index test is a popular indirect test method for predicting the uniaxial compressive strength of rocks. However, the reliability of the point load index’s estimation of uniaxial compressive strength of rocks is questioned due to the wide range of coefficients that are used to predict uniaxial compressive strength of rocks using point load index values. Factors such as the shape and type of rock specimen, practitioner, and test apparatus used can affect the accuracy of the point load index test. This study investigated the effect of four different specimen shapes used in point load index test (diametral, axial, block, and irregular lump tests) in predicting the uniaxial compressive strength. The rock samples were tested using four test procedures which are called diametral, axial, block, and irregular lump tests. The results showed that the irregular lump test was the most accurate in predicting uniaxial compressive strength, with the highest correlation coefficients and lowest mean absolute percentage errors. The point load index test can be used as a reliable predictor of uniaxial compressive strength of rocks when the irregular lump test is preferred.

The property of the lava Cap Gold: Mining Corporation is in the Nevada City-Grass Valley mining district about 5 miles east of Crass Valley, Calif. At present (July 1940) the plant is mining end milling about 390 tons of gold-silver ore a day; about 310 men are employed. This paper describes the mining methods used and presents mining costs for 1939, when 60,704 tons were mined by cut-and-fill stoping and 55,676 tons by square-setting.

Oven widths for experimental and commercial slot-type ovens differ appreably in most instances; the experimental ovens usually ranging from 10 to 14 inches and the commercial units from 14 to 21 inches. Application of results obtained with experimental ovens to commercial practice thus requires major extrapolations. A critical survey of the literature indicated that sufficient information about the effects of variations in oven width on the carbonizing process is not available to permit such extrapolations to be made with any considerable degree of confidence.

"PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor underground mine use blasting to develop its tunnels which will cause poisonous and dangerous gases trapped inside mine. To analyze this case, a study of mine ventilation, the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) gas concentration and diffusion coefficient is commenced. At the end, the re-entry time formula will be determined. Results indicate that this study is site specific and could only be applied in the place this study executed. The aim of this study is to be further developed by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to find a universal re-entry formula. Thus, its development and production processes require blasting to develop its tunnel. This process caused poisonous and dangerous gases spread and trapped inside the mine, one of them is carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is formed in an unbalanced reaction of explosives detonation and could be the cause of headache, blackout and death to people who inhale CO at certain concentration (McPherson, 2011; Hartman, Mutmansky, Ramani, & Wang, 2012). Mine ventilation system is installed in the mine to resolve this problem. Mine ventilation play an important role to disperse CO gas by absorb the poisonous/dangerous gases and deliver clean air into mine. The important parameter is diffusion coefficient, because diffusion is affecting particulates or gasses spreading from its sources throughout the mine. Diffusion coefficient is the total diffusion in axial direction of turbulent flow mainly by convection of bulk motion, advection and eddy diffusion, while the effect of molecular diffusion is appreciably negligible (Widiatmojo et al, 2015). Taylor (1953, 1954) develops a theory about the dispersion by inducing a slow stream of solvent into a capillary tube. Taylor used Reynolds assumption of radial diffusivity to be analogous with the transfer of the matter in turbulent flow as well as the transfer of momentum and heat. "Since early 2015, the price of nickel has dropped from the region of US$6/pound to current levels of around US$4.60/pound (March 2017), reflecting several market factors, but principally due to lower demand from China. Under such conditions, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain operating costs. In addition, labor and energy costs will continue to rise, while nickel ore grades will likely continue to drop. All major companies now accept the need for climate change action and consequently efforts are being made towards lowering carbon-based emissions. Nevertheless, meeting these challenges can also contribute to higher operating costs without parallel innovative developments - which at the same time, under current conditions, major companies are tending to curtail. In this paper, several productivity improvement opportunities to reduce unit operating costs at nickel sulphide and nickel laterite plants are reviewed. Opportunities include: (a) process technology and energy-type selection, production capability, optimization of process intensity and implementation of newer technologies; (b) improved productivity, equipment availability including maintenance best practice; (c) energy savings and recovery opportunities and use of energy surveys and, (d) process modeling and improved scheduling. Such improvements along with an uptick seen in nickel demand going forward should better position the world nickel industry.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an essential metal to modern society, primarily through its use as an important ingredient in stainless steel. Thus, stainless steel finds vital applications in food preparation facilities, as well as important uses in transportation and industrial applications. Canada has always played an important role in nickel production and nickel metallurgy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Canada supplied over 90% of the world’s nickel. However, this proportion has declined considerably to around 10% of the world nickel supply today. Still, Canada remains an important nickel supplier and contributor to nickel extractive technology. Due to the importance of nickel to society, nickel demand is expected to continually rise. On the other hand, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain production costs amid languishing nickel prices. While demand projections show nickel growth, there are uncertainties in actual levels of future market growth. Ore grades are dropping, while labour and energy costs, which are key cost contributors are rising, hence efforts to lower production costs will generally require innovative approaches."

Deep coal mines with strong roof and floor rock frequently encounter face and rib bursts. The burst problem is becoming more severe as mining depth increases, prompting efforts to relieve high stress areas ahead of mining. Successful stress relief reduces the occurrence of uncontrolled coal bursts. This report by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, presents a review of the most widely used methods to detect and destress high stress zones along coal faces. Stress-related burst problems and destressing efforts at a cooperating mine were investigated. Laboratory tests of the drilling yield method for high stress detection were conducted to determine the correlation between the volume of cuttings obtained and the magnitude of the applied stress at various confining pressures. A three- dimensional, multiple-seam computer modeling program, "MULSIM?, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of stress relief methods. Modeling results and guidelines for destressing are presented. Results indicate that dangerously high stress areas can be controlled by either proper planning or destressing. Proper mine planning guidelines and destressing methods such as volley firing, hydraulic fracturing, and auger drilling are discussed.

Monitoring and control of conventional industrial wet grinding circuits is conceptually straightforward. However, since production objectives and operating constraints can vary widely from plant to plant, there is probably no single overall grinding circuit control strategy which is "best" in all cases; in-variably some compromise is necessary between performance desired under ideal conditions and performance achievable in practice. The recent advent of relatively low cost, reliable, high speed small computer systems is revolutionizing daily operations in increasing numbers of metallurgical processing plants. Of special power and capability is a hierarchical computer network like that currently in use at the Pinto Valley Operations of the Cities Service Company. Several satellite processors for key plant areas communicate with a master computer operating under a powerful multitasking real-time operating system. Hardware and software structure is such that downtime on one of the processors -including the master -does not have a major impact on overall system operation. Admittedly, the powerful, core efficient table driven satellite software, which handles process/computer communication, calculation of nonmeasured process variables, and basic Direct Digital Control functions, is difficult to modify. However, important high level process monitoring, report preparation, graphic display, and supervisory control functions -including economic optimization -can be implemented by project engineers at the plant site. Thus, for example, new control strategies can be quickly examined and rapidly evaluated. Such computer monitoring capability also permits use of short duration process pulse tests for approximate dynamic modeling and rapid calculation of controller tuning constants for single loop dominant systems. Following a brief back-ground discussion of the Pinto Valley Project, we present some of the more interesting results and conclusions of our work over the past year.

"Electrodeposition of Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni alloys from aqueous solutions is one of the well-known examples of anomalous codeposition in which less noble metal deposits preferentially. In this paper, the electrodeposition behavior of these alloy systems was compared between the methanol and aqueous baths. In Fe-Ni system, the significant suppression of the deposition rate of more noble Ni was observed over a wide range of electrolysis conditions in both methanol and aqueous baths. However, the electrodeposition of Zn-Ni alloys showed the typical feature of normal type codeposition in the methanol baths, which was completely different from that in aqueous sulfate baths. The difference in the electrodeposition mechanism between Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni alloys was discussed on the basis of the alloy deposition behavior in the baths in which the activity of water was varied:INTRODUCTION'It has been well known that Fe-Ni alloys show an excellent soft magnetic property. Therefore, thin films of this alloy have been used to fabricate the'-various magnetic devices. For the production of Fe-Ni thin films, dry processes such as sputtering, PVD and CVD are 'employed frequently and the resulting films showed a preferable property as a magnetic material. Electrolyses as a production technique of thin films, on the other hand, has the advantage over other processes in its cheaper production cost due to the simplicity of the production unit The Zn-iron-group metal alloys such as Zn-Ni and Zn-Fe electrodeposited on a steel sheet ale known to exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and therefore the electrodeposition of these, alloys has been applied to the production of surface treated steel sheets mainly for automotive body panels.According to Brenner (1), the electrodeposition behavior of Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni alloys was' classified into the' 'anomalous type. In this type of codeposition, less noble metal, i.e. Fe for Fe-Ni and Zn for Zn-Ni system, deposits preferentially and the change in -the alloy composition- with the variation of electrolysis conditions was unpredictable because of their obscure deposition mechanism. Since most properties of the alloys mainly depend on their composition, the composition of the deposited' alloys must be controlled strictly. Therefore, it is neces5al)' to clarify the mechanism of anomalous codepasition in Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni systems: Several mechanisms have been proposed so fur, and among them the hydroxide .suppression mechanism (2), (3) has been regarded most plauslble depend on their composition, the composition of the deposited' alloys must be controlled strictly. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism of anomalous codeposition in Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni systems: Several mechanisms have been proposed so far, and among them the hydroxide suppression mechanism (2), (3) has been regarded most plausible. According to this mechanism, it can be predicted that the codeposition behavior depends greatly on the characteristic of water solvent in this study, using methanol as a solvent, the electrodeposition behavior of the anomalous codeposition was investigated to discuss the validity of the hydroxide suppression mechanism."

Introduction Extensive undersea coal-mining has developed on both the east and west coasts of Canada, and at this time some four million tons, or 25 per cent of the total output of Canadian coal, representing a pit-mouth value of $14,000,000 per annum, is coming from coal seams lying under the sea. Of the coal now being mined in Nova Scotia, 55 per cent comes from under the sea, and this proportion is likely to increase. The Province of Nova Scotia is at this date receiving in royalties paid upon coal ?removed from undersea areas a sum exceeding $400,000 per annum. The subject is, therefore, one of special interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and while this paper will deal chiefly with undersea coal-mining in Nova Scotia, an attempt has been made to summarize the development of mining practice in the winning of undersea coal in other parts of the world, with the hope that such a recital may assist in the assessment of local problems. The connection between the mining of coal under the sea and an insular or maritime geography is obvious in regard to Great Britain, Japan, Vancouver Island, Australia, and Cape Breton Island, and also in regard to the curious conformation of Chile; the tendency towards growth of a mercantile marine and naval eminence is equally obvious where coal is mined at tidewater. But, there is the further and less favourable significance that the mining of coal under the sea is associated with poverty rather than with abundance of coal reserves.

From 1955 to 1958 the Phillips Petroleum Co. conducted a series of small scale counterflow combustion field tests in a tar sand about 60-ft deep and 6 to 12-ft thick near Bellamy, Mo. A total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern, were employed. Electric heaters, gas burners and wellbore fuel packs were tested as counterflow ignition devices. Direct drive ignition followed by reversal to counterflow operation was not possible in this case because of formation plugging by the semi-solid tar during the direct drive phase. Sustained counterflow burning was achieved with wellbore fuel packs under conirolled conditions which permitted close correlation of fire front velocity, air velocity, air-oil ratios and yields for a wide variation in process parameters. The tar in place was about 10' APl with a reservoir viscosity greater than 500,000 cp. The composite oil prodlcct was 26' API with a viscosity in the range of 5 to 15 cp. Vertical sweep efficiency in the line drive pattern was essentially 100 per cent, with no evidence of gravity segregation. Original tar in place ranged between 800 and 1,000 bbllacre-ft, specific rock permeability averaged about 800 md before burning and effective air pemeability with residual oil and water in place (at the time of ignition) averaged 250 md. The volume of oil recovered during stabilized line drive counterflow burning represented about 67 per cent of the volume of tar originally in place in the burned out zones. A minimum was found when air-oil ratios were plotted against formation air velocities, and a limiting air velocity existed below which the counterflow fire front reversed and burned back over its own trajectory, using the residual coke left behind. INTRODUCTION Early in 1955 the Phillips Petroleum Co. began preparations to field test counterflow underground combustion as a method for producing oil from high viscosity hydrocarbon deposits, such as bituminous (tar) sands. At that time all published information on the use of underground burning io increase oil recovery was based on the direct drive process, in which the fire front moved through the formatim in the same direction as the injected air stream. Such direct burning is not applicable to many heavy oil sands or to most tar sands because the heat-thinned native hydrocarbon congeals in the cold rock ahead of the fire front forming a gas permeability block which smothers the combustion. Laboratory experiments first demonstrated that this permeability blocking would not occur if the fire front and the air stream moved in opposite directions. In this counterflow (reverse) burning process the heated heavy oil or tar is driven back through the combustion zone. Here thermal cracking produces relatively light hydrocarbon products which pass through the heated rock behind the fire front (largely in the vapor phase) and are incapable of causing a gas permeability block.' Exploratory wring revealed that consolidated bituminous sandstones with a combination of tar saturation, permeability, thickness and depth favorable for experimental field testing existed at several points in western Missouri. By the fall of 1955, a test site for determining technical feasibility of the counterflow process under field conditions had been selected near Bellamy, Vernon County, Mo. — about fifty miles north of Joplin. The pay zone was too thin and too shallow to constitute a commercial prospect, but these same factors permitted controlled experimental operation with a small compressor installation and with a large number of monitor wells. These were needed for adequate observation of the underground phenomena at reasonable cost. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The reservoir chosen for the experimental field tests was a 124 thick section of tar sand extending from 49 to 61 ft subsurface, with shale and siltstone laminations sealing the top and bottom. This section was part of a larger 30-ft thick tar sand deposit which extended both above and below the test zone. Core analyses showed that the 12-ft sand was effectively subdivided into two approximately equal sections, with the lower zone being consistently more permeable than the upper zone. The most significant laboratory core data are summarized in Table 1. The line drive test which is the principal subject of this report utilized only the lower 6-ft thick zone, with the upper zone regarded as part of the 55-ft overburden. WELL PATTERNS The over-all field test program involved a total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern. With the exception of the exhaustive paper on the Father de Smet mill, by its designer, Mr. A. J. Bowie, Jr. (Bans., x. 87), nothing, so far as the writer is aware, has as yet appeared on the stamp-mills of the Black Hills of Dakota, although they have been steady producers for the last ten years. Within the small area of about 6000 by 1600 feet, $2,271,341.14 was produced in 1887† from rock averaging $4 per ton in free gold. I. The Ores. Character of the Ores.—The gold of the district is found in quartz and pyrites finely distributed through vast bodies of mica- and amphibole-schists, argillites and phyllites, and also impregnating the schists themselves. The " Belt," embracing the section of Lead City, Terraville and Central City, is the only part worked at present. The principal associated mineral is iron pyrites, with some arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, garnet and asbestos. The ores from open cuts and upper levels are more free-milling. than those from underground workings below water-line. Hence

The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model to predict the oxygen requirements for a miner evacuating a mine. The model accounts for variations in the miner's escape speed with mine airway height, and for the empirically determined expressions for the weight-specific oxygen uptake rate for upright walking, stooped walking (duck-walking), and crawling. A Fortran computer program that is user oriented was prepared based upon the model's constitutive equations. Specific instructions for utilizing the program, as well as applications to miner evacuation from a mine, are presented.

The objective of this study was to determine if significant relationships exist between coal mine roof stability and the time roof is left unsupported. Additional factors such as geology, opening geometry, and mining methods were also studied: to determine their relative influence on mine roof stability. The results of the study indicate that geologic factors such as shear zones (either joints or faults) and changes in roof rock lithology were the principal factors governing mine roof stability. The time lapse factor appeared to be of critical importance when poor mine roof conditions are encountered. The study pointed up the need for improved and permissible rock mechanics instrumentation for use in coal mine investigations.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.
