"This paper discusses the experience of Noranda Mines Limited, Matagami Division, with the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method in the mining of narrow-vein stopes. Although limited to only one stope, the viability of this method at the Radiore No.2 Mine has proven that further use of VCR in narrow-vein mining will be made.IntroductionThe Radiore No.2 property is located east of the Bell River in the southeast quadrant of Isle-Dieu Township, approximately 4.5 km east of the town of Matagami. The new James Bay Highway is 2.5 km north of the property and access to the mine is by a 2.5-km logging road.The property was staked by Radiore Uranium Mines in March 1961 and the sulphide body was first indicated by an E.M. survey. Diamond drilling commenced in the fall of 1961 and was completed by the end of 1962. As per an agreement in 1970, the claims were sold and assigned to Orchan Mines Limited. Subsequently, the property was transferred to Bell Allard Mines Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Orchan Mines. Early in 1979, Noranda Mines Limited acquired the property and it is now part of Noranda's Matagami Division.Geology and MineralizationThe deposit is in a band of volcanic rocks north of the Bell River complex. The lens of massive sulphides dips almost vertically and strikes almost east-west. The north contact is essentially sharp against andesite material; the south contact is less well defined, as the massive sulphides tend to grade into more disseminated material.The orebody varies from 5 to 20 feet in width, by 350 feet long and 200 feet in height. The overburden is composed of sand, gravel and clay, varying from 0 to 26 feet in depth. The ore reserves were 153,340 tons grading 1.97% copper and 1.01% zinc including 10% of dilution at zero grade."

In this paper, full-scale mill data collected from three different circuit configurations in cement plants demonstrated the size reduction performance of dry ball mills in relation with the ball size classification achieved by the classifying liners used in the grinding compartments. Findings indicated that, breakage rates at the last 2 ~ 4 meters of the mill are not sufficient to give reasonable size reduction ratios for the production of fines. Application of only damming rings without classifying liners resulted in inverse ball size classification which lead to reduction in size reduction performance thus specific breakage rates.

A mineral purvey of 40,000 acres of the 42,213-acre Little Humboldt River Wilderness Study Area was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. There are no identified mineral resources but anomalous gold, silver, mercury, and arsenic concentrations were found. The study area is located in Elko County, NV, in the Owyhee Upland geomorphic subprovince. It is underlain by mid- to late-Miocene-age rhyolite, basalt, tuff, vitric ash, and tuffaceous siltstone. On the south side and partly within the study area, a mining company recently (January 1986) located 125 contiguous claims over an area of hydrothermally-altered volcanic rocks that have anomalous surface concentrations of gold, mercury, arsenic, and silver. Anomalous gold-silver concentrations in altered rocks were encountered at several other widely scattered localities in the study area. These elevated metal concentrations and associated hydrothermal alteration indicate gold resources may be present in the study area. A 20-ft-thick bed of diatomaceous earth, which contains 60 to 85 percent diatoms, crops out 0.3 mi north of the study area. Elsewhere, three samples of altered volcanic tuff taken within the study area contain from 46 to 70 percent zeolite (clinoptilolite). The diatomaceous earth and zeolite sampled are not of sufficient quality to compete with materials presently being marketed. There has been no mineral production from the study area, but a caved adit, about 25 ft long, and six prospect pits were found.

Terminology. The term potash originated in "pot ashes" produced by burning wood to ashes in iron pots and then leaching out the soluble salts, chiefly potassium carbonate, from the residue. In modern usage potash is a generic term for various potassium salts used in agriculture and industry. More specifically, it denotes the oxide of potassium, K2O, and the content of potassium in ores and products is stated as weight percent of K2O present. Its salts are commonly referred to as muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. The presence of an adequate supply of available potassium in the soil promotes the health and improves the quality of the plant. insures greater efficiency in photosynthesis, increases resistance to certain diseases, offsets the effect of an oversupply of nitrogen, and helps the plant to utilize soil moisture more advantageously. ("Soils and Men," U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook 1938.) Occurrence. Potassium ranks seventh among the elements in abundance. It is estimated to constitute some 2.6% of the lithosphere and is found in soluble forms in the oceans, lakes, rivers, and subsurface waters. It is also an important constituent of plant and animal life. Commercially significant accumulations of potassium salts occur in underground deposits formed in past geologic times by evaporation of ancient bodies of saltwater, inland drainage basins, and shallow sea lagoons. The potash content of such waters was the end result of weathering and leaching of insoluble potash-bearing aluminosilicates, such as feldspars, micas, leucitcs, and others. The concentrations of potassium salts in the natural brines of some lakes in the arid and semiarid regions of the continents are also important as sources of potash; the brines of the Dead Sea in Asia Minor, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and Searles Lake in California typify such concentrations. Every continent has major potash deposits as listed in Table 1 adopted from Cawley.1

Conventional PGM matte smelting requires the presence of a certain quantity of base metal sulphides in order to collect the platinum group metals in a molten sulphidic matte phase in the furnace. Furthermore, the quantity of chromium oxide in the feed materials is controlled in order to avoid the build-up of high-melting chromite spinels in the furnace. Mintek has developed a process for smelting difficult PGM-containing feed materials that contain low amounts of sulphur and/or high amounts of chromium oxide. A DC arc furnace is used to provide the appropriate conditions to generate an iron alloy that collects PGMs very effectively, leaving extremely low residual quantities of PGMs in the slag. Various feed materials have been treated successfully in furnace campaigns running at power levels up to 1.5 MW. The longest of these campaigns was run continuously for more than four months, treating more than two thousand tons of materials such as low-grade concentrates, revert tailings, and converter slag. The campaigns demonstrated the robustness and versatility of the process, and proved that it is possible to sustainably produce a PGM-containing alloy and discardable slags containing an average of less than 1.4 g/t of PGMs over the entire campaign. Illinois produced 5 per cent more crude oil in 1934 than in 1933, because there was less curtailment, and. the value of the year's production at the wells was 35 per cent more than that of the previous year. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1934 was $1.13 as compared with $0.87 in 1933, an increase of 30 per cent. The quotas of allowable production for Illinois during 1934, as authorized by Oil Administrator Harold L. Ickes, were as follows: January, February, March, 12,000 bbl. per day; April, May, 12,500; June, July, 12,600; August, 12,500; September, October, November, 12,000; December, 11,700. No other restrictions on production were in effect during the year until Oct. 11, when it was found necessary to prorate the fields to 75 per cent, a curtailment of 25 per cent below the quota fixed by the Federal Administrator. On Dec. 1 the curtailment was reduced to 18 per cent and on Dec. 18, to 15 per cent. Of the 26 wells drilled, 10 were oil producers, 8 were in proved fields and 2 were in a new pool in Wabash County, l½ miles south of the nearest production, one was a small gas well on the Stubblefield anticline in Bond County, one was an input well for repressuring in the Colmar-Plymouth field, McDonough County, and 14 were dry holes, mostly scattered wildcat tests.

The United Eastern Mining Co.'s property is in the Oatman, Gold Roads mining district of Mohave County, Ariz. The mine and mill are 26 mi. (41.8 km.) southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway connection. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz with some andesite. The values, which are mainly gold, alloyed with approximately 34 per cent., by weight, of silver, are extremely fine so that fine grinding is a most important factor in extraction. The milling process, briefly, consists of single-stage, coarse-crushing, two-stage ball milling in cyanide solution, followed by combined mechanical and air agitation, and by straight counter-current decantation. The Merrill zinc-dust precipitation method is used to recover the values, and is preceded by the Crowe vacuum treatment of the solution. The most notable features of the plant are the absence of filters, and the use of short peb mills loaded with steel balls, for fine grinding. As originally designed, the capacity of the mill was to be 200 tons per day, although the grinding end was to be capable of handling double that amount. By adding extra agitators and thickeners and by some alterations to the grinding end, the daily capacity has been raised to 285 tons. This, it is hoped, may be increased to 300 tons during the warm months of the present year. An Engineers' Symposium was held Wednesday evening, Mar. 26, in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West. 39th St., under the general auspices of the Local Sections of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society. of Mechanical Engineers, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. It was participated in by members of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Chemical Society, American Electrochemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, American. Society of Refrigerating Engineers, New York Electrical Society, Brooklyn Engineers' Club, Illuminating Engineering Society, Institute of Radio Engineers, Municipal Engineers of the City of New York, Society de Chemie. Industrielle, Society of Chemical Industry, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. In opening the meeting the chairman, Gano Dunn,* said: The program calls this an engineers' symposium, which means a putting, together of things, and these things tonight are ideas of fundamental relations to the engineering profession and the engineering societies. Not only engineers, but all men nowadays are examining their views in respect to their relation to what we call Society. My conception of Society is that there is no such thing in the concrete sense of the word. It is an abstraction, and just in proportion as it is a generalization and broader in scope than the particulars from which it is drawn, so is it emptier of content. That does not mean that it is not important, but it does mean that we should be careful and not be led astray into a zeal for doing things for Society that we would not do for our fellow engineers and our brothers. The man who is unwilling to do something for his brother or fellow engineer and yet urges that same thing for Society-is thoroughly inconsistent and, in my opinion, wrong.

The Concentrator 1 plant at Cadia transitioned from Cadia Hill open pit to the Cadia East block cave ore body in 2013. As a result of this change, major plant upgrades were required to achieve the desired throughput while treating more competent ore. The 40-foot (40’) SAG mill now receives a feed of predominantly high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) product with a minor component of secondary crushed ore at a combined F80 of 17 mm. The significant reduction in feed size to the SAG mill has markedly changed the operating characteristics of the mill, which has been extensively studied since commissioning in 1998.This paper examines the operation of the 40’ SAG mill in its new configuration in the Concentrator 1 circuit. Operational stability is highlighted as a significant factor in delivering mill performance, which has been achieved through several key improvement projects utilising a theory of constraints framework. Five years of successful project implementation has progressively lifted the maximum processing rate of Concentrator 1 from the design estimate of 2455 t/h to above 3000 t/h. The self-diffusion coefficient of chromium in various alloys in the iron-chromium system has been measured. A variation in Dofrom 10-4 for pure chromium to a maximum of 102 near 60 pct Cr appears with a range of activation energy from about 50 to 80 kcal per mol. The general pattern of behavior observed is not consistent with present theories of diffusion by a vacancy mechanism. Suggestions are made for further clarifying experiments. RECENT work on the self-diffusion of chromium,' ?-uranium2-4 and ß-zirconium,23, 26 has indicated that these elements have very low Do (10-3 to 10-4) compared to that conventionally expected for vacancy diffusion. Pound et al.5 have suggested that this may be due to ring diffusion being operative, and have proposed a model which gives Do of the correct order of magnitude. The essential difference between this model and Zener's earlier model6 is that whereas Zener assumes tight coupling between atoms in a ring to establish a vibrational frequency, Pound's model allows the atoms to vibrate essen- tially each in their own normal modes. The probability of each atom moving in the correct direction to cause a ring of n atoms to rotate by 2p/n must then be calculated as a "synchronal entropy" which may be -20 e.u. for a 4 atom ring. In iron, the latest determinations of self-diffusion yield Do in the range 18 to 522.7-9 The most accurate is probably that of Borg and Birchenall8 which is 118 ± 3. This value is not inconsistent with that expected for a vacancy mechanism. Since iron and chromium are very closely similar in size, are both transition metals, and their solution is thermodynamically ideal at temperatures of interest in diffusion, it appeared that a determination of self-diffusion coefficients, Do and Q as a function of composition would be of substantial interest to diffusion theory. The following measurements were made with this purpose in mind.

Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. Table 19 and figure 7 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface metal/nonmetal mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 19 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 79 fires occurred in 16 states during 1990-2001 for these mines. Forty-five of the fires caused 44 injuries and 2 fatalities (including 9 fires and 7 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 6.6 fires and 3.7 injuries. Sixty-five fires with 31 injuries and 2 fatalities occurred at metal mines, and 14 fires with 13 injuries occurred at nonmetal mines. The Ewhr value was 546 x 106 hr (In = 0.016), and the LWD value was 13,134. Nevada and Arizona had the most fires (19 fires, 10 injuries, and 1 fatality; and 19 fires and 11 injuries, respectively). They were followed by Minnesota (11 fires, 4 injuries, and 1 fatality) and Alaska (6 fires and 4 injuries). Of these states, Alaska had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.079). Table 20, partly illustrated in figure 8, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires increased during the second period, then decreased during most of the remaining periods. The number of fire injuries decreased during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the last period), accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours during most of the periods (a small increase is seen during the third and fourth periods). The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the number of fire injuries. Tables 21-26 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 9 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 27 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Lead sulphate occurs as anglesite, and is formed in every roasting of lead sulphides or sulpho-salts containing lead. In smelting in the blast furnace an ore containing natural or artificial lead sulphate, a large part of the sulphur present goes to the formation of the intermediary product matte which requires further treatment for the recovery of the values it contains. It is therefore of importance to study the behavior of lead sulphate at elevated temperatures, both without and with reducing agents, especially as the information available gives data which are more or less conflicting. 11. Decomposition of PbS04 by Heat The dissociation of PbSO4 into PbO and SO3 or SO2 and 0 has been discussed by many metallurgists. The following data are considered to be representative. Doeltz and Graumannl found that PbS04 was not affected-by heat at 800" C.; that dissociation began at 900" C., and was rapid at 1,000° when the salt lost in 1 1/2 hr. 14.3 per cent. of its weight, the dry salt containing 26.43 per cent. SO3. Hofman and Wanjukow2 summarize their work upon the dissociation of metallic sulphates with the statement that the decomposition of PbS04 begins at 195' C., but progresses very slowly, with the formation of the basic salt 6PbO.5SO3 at 705"; that this salt undergoes a transformation at 847") begins to be decomposed at 888") to sinter at 896", and to fuse at 910"; rapid dissociation begins at 952") and is accompanied by volatilization of PbO; retardations at 958" and 962" indicate an acceleration of decomposition which, however, is not complete. Proske3 found that PbSO4 gave off at 900" C. in 30 min. only 0.63 per cent. of its 803, and that the loss increased with

THIS plant, near Marysville, Mont., was planned to treat the ore from the Piegan and Gloster mines, the latter being one of the early and famous producers of the Marysville district. When the mill was closed in 1888, treatment consisted of stamp milling, followed by pans and settlers for pan amalgamation. The extraction was evidently poor; because, a few years later, thousands of tons of tailings were re-treated by the ranchers in the valley below the mill, by the then new cyanide process, and gave a handsome profit. In 1914, the present owners, after laboratory tests and an experimental mill run, decided upon the following treatment: crushing to 40 mesh in cyanide solution, concentration, amalgamation, classification, and cyanidation of sands by leaching, and of slime by agitation and decantation in charges. The ore averaged about $7 per ton, gold and silver, the ratio of weight being 1 oz. gold to 7.56 oz. silver. The ratio of gold and silver in tailings was 1 oz. Au to 36.6 oz. Ag; the quartz vas sharp and, sandy, however finely ground, and rather difficult to slime. The mechanical 'equipment was a No. 5 Symons gyratory crusher; three 10-ft. Lane slow-speed Chilean mills; one Wilfley roughing and one finishing table; one submerged-type Akins classifier; five 26 by 10-ft. fir leaching tanks; one 24 by 7-ft. Dorr thickener; four 14 by 16-ft. Dorr agitators; four 6-compartment double-row zinc-boxes having compartments 18 in. wide, 18 in. deep, and 34 in. long; Johnson zinc lathe; acid and vacuum filter tanks for treating precipitate; roasting furnace; and Case tilting No. 275 crucible furnace for melting precipitate. The mill is driven by electric power supplied by the Montana Power Co. at the following rates, per kw.-hr.: 200 to 300 hp.,.0.68 c.; 300 to 500 lip., 0.61 c.; 500 to 750 hp., 0.55 c.; plus $1 per month per installed motor horsepower.

The æMountain Camp reefÆ at Alford's mine, Wakamarina,Marlborough, had no recorded gold production although assays of 5 - 26 g/t were reported, but it did produce c. l000 kg of scheelite. The lode consists of a lower massive quartz layer, and upper, cm-banded, ribboned quartz layers, and has a very low sulphide content. Within the massive layer, relict early fine-grained mosaic quartz with idioblastic scheelite is surrounded by recrystallised granoblastic coarse-grained quartz with calcite and plagioclase, in which an original ribbon banding texture is mimiced by strings of tiny inclusions. In both the banded and massive layers, rounded quartz grains, created by cataclastic milling of grain margins and along syn-vein fractures, have been partially annealed within later quartz overgrowths. Late fibrous quartz and calcite fill brittle cross fractures.   Deformation events D1 and D2 are associated with mid-late Jurassic metamorphism of the Pelorus Group, D2 producing the main regional schistosity (S2, and the earliest scheelite. D3 is an extensional mylonitic shear event that formed the dominant schistosity in Alford's mine (S3). The quartz lode was emplaced within the mylonite by a series of individual dilation pulses (D4). The D5 event caused crenulation of the S3 mylonite, kink banding and chevron folding of the S2 schist and S3 mylonite, and reverse faulting, rodding and cross-fracturing with late fibrous quartz-calcite veining of the D4 quartz lode.   Fluid influxes during successive dilations of D4 fractures progressively caused recrystallisation of earlier quartz bands on the footwall, annealing and recrystallisation of quartz along milled crystal margins and fractures, and deposition of minor sulphides. There was thus a dynamic interplay between fault dilation, lode fracture, fluid influx, lode band deposition, and lode recrystallisation. THE ore smelted in the Winnamuck furnace during the year 1872 consisted, for the most part, of oxidized ores from the Winnamuck mine, only sixty tons of outside ore (from the Spanish mine) having been smelted. The latter, like the principal Winnamuck ore, was oxidized or so-called carbonate ore. There was mixed with these oxidized ores three hundred to four hundred tons, or 7 to 10 per cent. of galena, some of which was mined with the oxidized ore, while a part was mined separately from the lower portion of the mine, and afterwards mixed with the ore, with a view of preventing the formation of deposits of metallic iron in the furnaces. The average assay in silver of all the ore handled was 51.46 oz. per ton, most of it existing as chloride of silver. The lead contents were 34.98 per cent., all, or nearly all, in the form of carbonate of lead. The relative amount of silver is not at all constant, the best silver ore often being poorest in lead. The predominant gangue was silica, several determinations of which have been made on representative samples, yielding in three such samples 26, 38, and 58 per cent. silica, the latter test being ore containing but little lead. The average contents in silica are about 35 per cent., with 6 to 7 per cent. sesquioxide of iron, and small quantities of alumina and lime. Mechanically, the ore was very fine, and so thoroughly disintegrated that it presented few distin¬guishing characteristics, rendering sorting or separating of ore from waste difficult, and often impracticable. Experiments on a small scale have been tried, with a view to separate the silica by washing; but these were unsuccessful, as the finest slime, requiring a long time to settle in still water, contained a large amount of silver; and on a careful sizing and washing of the sands and coarser parts, the silver contents were found to be less dependent upon specific gravity

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is evaluating water spray additives for the purpose of improving respirable dust control during coal mining operations, with particular emphasis on the longwall shearer. Recent field tests of surfactant-polymer reagents at two production longwall operations have shown favorable respirable dust reductions compared with water sprays containing no additive. Gravimetric dust samples obtained by a technician downwind of the shearer while following or preceding the machine showed dust reductions in the range of about 40% to 60% for some of the reagent formulations compared with using water alone. Three polymers were tested: two polyethylene oxide compounds of different molecular weight and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). All were effective for dust reduction, and two were cost effective when used in combination with sodium di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate surfactant. How-ever, the use of these reagents requires the longwall operator to be more aware of headgate dust control. Experimental evidence indicates that dust captured by reagent-treated sprays at the shearer can be reemitted in the headgate area if stagcloader-crusher sprays and other dust controls are inadequate.

1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. The history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupelll and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A considerable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; SiOz, 1.63; A1203, 0.65. PRocess foR Treatment op Concentrates In the development of a process for treatment of these concentrates, three different methods were investigated: (1) roasting in a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine with an excess of air; (2) separation of mercury and antimony by distillation in a reducing atmosphere; (3) a third method, which ultimately developed into the present process. The third method involved a slow calcination at a closely regulated temperature with a limited admission of air, which separated the mercury and antimony, the raeroury passing out of the kiln with the furnace gases and the antimony remaining in the calcine or "sinter."

Arizona embraces portions of two major western-U.S. physiographic-geologic provinces and a smaller, local one. These exert fundamental control over the geologic framework and associated earth-material resources and potential. The Mogollon Rim diagonally crosses the State and separates the Colorado Plateau Province to the northeast from the Transition Zone and Basin and Range Province to the southwest. More than 90 percent of the population, production of nonfuel minerals, agricultural land, and water resources are in the Basin and Range part of the State. In 1981 Arizona was ranked number one in the Nation with respect to the value ($2.56 billion) of nonfuel-mineral production. About 8.2 percent of this amount ($212.9 million) can be attributed to nonmetallic (industrial) materials. Although a diversity of nonmetallic substances is produced and some are exported, the bulk is utilized within the State and is directly related to market growth. Since 1950 there has been a fourfold increase in Arizona's population, a concomitant twelvefold jump in sand-gravel production (tons), and a twentyfold increase in "stone" production. New industries developed during this time include cement, salt (and storage of liquid petroleum gas products in solution cavities in salt), zeolite, hydrofrac sand, vitrified clay pipe, crushed marble products (teed additive, pool sand, roofing granules, etc.), and "rock" wool. Most of these newer industries serve out-of-State as well as in-State markets. In 1981 at least 225 industrial mineral or rock deposits were being worked to produce about 10 tons of material per Arizona resident per year. In 1980 the relative values of basic industrial minerals produced in the State, by major group, were cement and lime (51.6 percent); gravel (26.5 percent); sand (11.8 percent); stone (4.6 percent); and others (5.5 percent). Detailed knowledge of the nonmetallic rock-and-mineral content of most Arizona ranges and basins is lacking. Exploration opportunities in this sun-belt growth region appear encouraging.
