A flotation procedure was devised by the Federal Bureau of Mines for beneficiating Mount Wheeler, Nev., beryllium ores that contain the beryllium minerals bertrandite and phenacite in a complex association with calcite, fluorspar, mica, quartz, and other accessory minerals, The method also has proven to be effective in trials on ore from the Lake George, Colo., area. Samples used in most of the research ranged from 0.49 to 0.73 percent BeO. Beryllium mineralization varied from two-thirds bertrandite to all phenacite. An unusually high grade sample containing 5 percent BeO as phenacite was floated on a batch basis to prepare concentrate for utilization studies. The beryllium minerals were floated from undeslimed pulps at natural pH using sodium fluoride and sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP), as modifiers, and a fatty acid-fuel oil combination as the collector. Key factors were the use of a minimum of about 4 pounds of sodium fluoride and between 2 and 4 pounds of HMP per ton of ore. Efficacy of the HMP was related to the grind, mineralogical composition, corollary reagents, and type and time of conditioning. Addition of the fluoride, HMP, and collector in that order, followed by appropriate conditioning after each addition, was essential for satisfactory flotation.

Neste trabalho foi avaliada a influência do tempo entre passes na interação entre precipitação e recristalização durante o processamento termomecânico do aço ISO 5832-9. A evolução da microestrutura foi investigada por microscopia ótica, eletrônica de transmissão e EBSD. Observou-se que quanto menor o tempo entre passes, maiores foram as tensões necessárias para promover a deformação e menores foram os tamanhos dos grãos e precipitados obtidos. Somente precipitados de TiNbN foram encontrados após o encharque e NbCrN durante o processamento. O material sofre recristalização dinâmica e partículas de 50 nm foram efetivas no ancoramento dos contornos de grãos e discordâncias.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a large-scale (6.4 t), long-term (2,165 days) test to gain a better understanding of the leaching characteristics of chalcopyritic ores. An ore sample containing 0.77 pct Cu was leached in a fiberglass column by downward percolation of acidified ferric sulfate solutions. Three sets of leaching conditions were investigated: (1) ambient temperature leaching, (2) elevated temperature (50° to 60° C) leaching, and (3) elevated temperature leaching after inoculation with thermophilic bacteria. Leaching at ambient temperature resulted in a copper extraction rate of 0.44 pct per 100 days. Increasing the temperature to 50° to 60° C resulted in decreased activity of natural mesophilic bacteria, and the leaching rate decreased to 0.22 pct per 100 days. The pH was lowered from 2.0 to 1.6, and nutrient solutions that contained thermophilic bacteria were added. This procedure resulted in an increase in the ferric-to-ferrous iron ratio and an increase in the copper leaching rate. However, the increased leaching rate was not sustained, and 120 days after inoculation the bacterial activity declined, the ferrous iron content increased, and the copper leaching rate decreased.

It also provides a discussion on the future of DT in mining as well as a research direction, which identifies the need of academia to provide support for mining companies in the form of both research and the education of digitally literate, dynamically capable mining engineers into the coming decades.

This short paper deals with the subject of research and its relation to productivity. All who have stopped to even think about industrial re-search and its impact on the nation-al economy take for granted that research and development are pre-requisite to increased productivity. It is another matter, however, to identify and properly evaluate the many factors entering into the relationship between the two. Some studies are currently underway in the United States on the subject, but, so far, nothing much in the way of conclusive data has come to light. In Canada, we have not yet even produced any statistical figures on national productivity, although work is now being done on this subject and information will soon be available. The usefulness of being able to measure the benefits of investment in re-search and development in terms of industrial growth or productivity need not be laboured for the benefit of those interested in research management.

"Abstract - A horizontal mineralogical-geochemical ore zonation with a southeast to northwest trending succession of Cu and Fe (Zn) main zones has been discovered in the Logatchev hydrothermal field (14°45??N Mid-Atlantic Ridge). The major minerals are pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, isocubanite, digenite and chalcocite. Zn-sulfide, marcasite and covellite are less abundant. Rare minerals are native copper, zincian copper and cobalt pentlandite (first found in oceanic massive sulfides), Cu and Cu-Co-bearing Fe-disulfides. Two groups of the main sulfide assemblages with different copper contents are recognized: Group I comprises assemblages with primary sulfides (isocubanite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and Zn-sulfide; Cu up to 35 wt% in Cu-bearing minerals); Group II contains assemblages with secondary Cu-rich sulfides (bornite, digenite, chalcocite; Cu ~60 wt%) as well as rare minerals (cobalt pentlandite, native copper and zincian copper). The assemblages of Group I formed at a temperature of about 300°C; the sulfur fugacity (log fs2 atm) at 300°C is probably 9.9. Relations between minerals of this group are contradictory, attributed to non-equilibrium environments, and no unified sequence of crystallization of minerals has been determined. Minerals of Group II replace, rim or cross the assemblages of Group I. Group II minerals crystallized in a distinct sequence (cobalt pentlandite-bornite-digenite- chalcocite-native copper), with increasing copper content from the start to the end of the depositional sequence. This may correspond to pH from 7 to 8 near Eh = -0.2 at 250°C. Minerals of this group were generally formed under hypergene alteration processes. Compositions of ore minerals were studied by means of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) (150 analyses). Narrow composition fields were revealed in all main sulfides, which comprised known experimental data. ZnS contains 6.0 to 28.0 mol.% FeS, which is close to data known for other hydrothermal massive sulfides from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). A common admixture in ZnS is Cu (0.16 to 1.32 wt%). Rare grains of unusual anisotropic Fe-disulfides, (Fe0.95Cu0.05)S2 and Cu(Fe,Co)9S20, were found among the ore minerals."

"Twin Creeks is a gold mining complex that is part of Newmont’s Nevada operations. The mining complex is composed of two openpits, Mega and Vista, external ore sources and a set of existing stockpiles, all of which provide ore for an autoclave, an oxide mill and a heap leach. Mega pit provides sulfide ore for the autoclave, whereas Vista pit provides oxide ore for the oxide mill and the heap leach. Both pits operate the same mining equipment and their extraction sequence must, therefore, be optimized simultaneously. Stringent blending requirements are associated with the operation of the autoclave for the sulfide ore. Strategic blending optimization on a large scale has brought significant value to the operation by increasing synergies. This paper presents the implementation of a stochastic optimization framework for the long-term production planning at Twin Creeks that simultaneously optimizes mining, stockpiling, blending and processing decision variables. The uncertainty and variability associated with the different sources of material are incorporated in the optimization model by means of stochastic simulations. The stochastic solution generated shows substantial benefits by increasing forecasted recoverable gold, leading to increased cash flows, while reducing the risk of not achieving forecasts by increasing the probabilities of meeting production and blending targets.IntroductionMine operations consist of multiple components such as mineral deposits, stockpiles, external sources, mills and autoclaves. These components represent a mineral value chain, also known in the literature as a mining complex (Montiel and Dimitrakopoulos 2015; Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos 2016). The material extracted from the mines flows through the different components and is transformed into sellable products. This flow of material in a mineral value chain involves complex, nonlinear transformations that render the use of industry-standard optimizers difficult. Furthermore, the optimization of a mining complex can be formulated as a mixed-integer, nonlinear optimization program with millions of integer variables representing mining, blending, stockpiling and processing decisions, prohibiting the use of conventional nonlinear optimization approaches. Previous methods that consider the joint optimization of multiple components of the mineral value chain are available (Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman, 1999; Chanda, 2005; Stone et al., 2005; Wooller, 2005; Whittle, 2007, 2010; Bodon et al., 2010). Although these methods add value by increasing the synergy between the different components of the mining complex, they rely on simplifying assumptions that constrain their efficacy, while ignoring a most critical aspect. The latter aspect includes the geological uncertainty and actual variability of the materials in the mineral deposits mined and are supplied to the related mineral value chain, similarly to conventional life-of-mine planning methods used for individual mines (Dimitrakopoulos, Farrelly and Godoy, 2002; Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos, 2011; Spleit and Dimitrakopoulos, 2017). Additional simplifying assumptions may include: the consideration of a limited number of components, the combination of different methods, the aggregation of variables, fixed production schedules the definition of policies prior to optimization, such as cutoff- grade definition or destination of mining blocks, the linearization of nonlinear transformation functions and/or the disregard for the uncertainty of several critical parameters (Whittle, 2007). The simultaneous optimization of multiple components of a mining complex was introduced by Newmont. Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman (1999) implemented a mixed-integer programming formulation to optimize Newmont’s Nevada operations. Residual load development in driven precast piles has been widely researched in recent decades, however, cast-in-situ piles are often falsely assumed to be unaffected by this mechanism. In contrast to driven precast piles, driven cast-in-situ (DCIS) piles require adequate time prior to loading for the concrete hydration and curing processes to occur. The concrete-soil interaction is complex with several processes influencing the strains within the concrete pile after installation. DCIS piles are of particular interest given that residual loads can be developed during both the driving and casting phases. This paper present four instrumented end-bearing DCIS piles in which temperature and strains were monitored from installation, with the objective of identifying the processes contributing to the measured strains prior to testing. Strain gauges at all depths recorded a net compression and compressive strains continued to increase up to the commencement of load testing. Residual strains in the test piles were interpreted to be influenced by temperature (concrete and ambient soil and air temperature), consolidation of soils due to dissipation of excess pore water pressure, and swelling from absorption of groundwater. Several residual load interpretive methods are evaluated with the Siegel and McGillivray (2009) approach being consistent with the skin friction full mobilisation theory of the Unified Design method. The full-scale field tests presented herein provide a unique opportunity to examine DCIS pile behaviour, particularly given the lack of presently available published studies on these pile types.

The petrographic microscope plays an important role in the mineral dressing of nonmetallic materials. Petrographers and mineral technologists have evinced an interest in the technique developed, specifically, for mineral-dressing problems. Apart from some welcome announcements for the oil and gas industry to postpone the implementation of certain negative tax changes, the budget was surprisingly scant in terms of definitive tax proposals.While massive revisions in the rules relating to pensions, small businesses, commodity taxation and profit-sharing were brought forward, many of these proposals are set out in White Papers or other documents to be implemented into legislation only after further consultation. Canadians will accordingly have to wait for such promised benefits as increased RRSP and other pension contribution limits."

Before going into this subject, I would very much like to call to your attention some past history on patents granted by the United States Patent office that involved ammonium nitrate. On February 10, 1885, a patent was granted to Russell S. Penniman. "The object of this invention is to securely protect ammonium nitrate against deliquescent and to maintain it in substantially its normal disintegrated condition, so as to afford a new product suited for ready use in the manufacture of high explosives, and enable the immediate admixture thereof with any of the well known explosive substances or compounds heretofore employed. 'Whether the nitrate be thus granulated or otherwise reduced to a granular or divided condition, it is then thoroughly mixed with about twelve (12) percent of the fluid or semi-fluid carbonaceous protecting medium, which forms a readily applied jacket or coating for the granules of nitrate and also serves as a carbonaceous element in such explosive compounds as it may thereafter be employed in."

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop methanation catalysts for converting synthesis gas derived from coal to synthetic natural gas. This report describes a method to prepare supported Raney nickel coatings by dipping screen-covered nickel sheet in molten aluminum-nickel alloy. Coatings were formed at 1,050° C that were comparable in thickness, composition, microstructure, and catalytic properties to flame-sprayed commercially pre-pared Raney nickel. A molten salt comprising cryolite-8 wt-pct LiF was employed over the molten metal bath to clean and preheat the substrates, to protect the metal bath from oxidation, and to heattreat the coated specimens. Immediately following heat treatment, specimens were quenched to 700° C in a molten salt bath containing CaC12-34.5 wt-pct NaCl, which also functioned to remove the insoluble occluded fluoride salt.

The anisotropy of fracture and slip, that is, the brittleness and ductility of the beryllium single crystal, is characteristic also of po1ycrystalline beryllium in which the grains are oriented in a preferred manner. Beryllium with grain orientations resulting from hot working either unidirectionally or bidirectionally is ductile or brittle in directions given by the anisotropy and orientation of the grains. Textures developed from various hot-working sequences are given, and tensile results are correlated with textures. Not only texture, but fine grain size is necessary for obtaining high tensile elongation. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation are both correlated with grain diameter. Of particular interest is the case in which unusually high tensile elongations of 30 to 40 pct are obtained when basal planes are oriented to carry THE beryllium crystal (of nominal purity) is probably unique among metals with respect to its unusually acute anisotropy of slip and fracture. While extensive slip can occur on the system (1010) [ll20] starting at about 19,000 psi, the (0001) plane is particularly vulnerable to fracture at 4500 psi or less. Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. Of the 15 selected non fuel mineral commodities detailed in table 12, only 3 indicated increases in worldwide consumption in 1992. As in 1991, decline in consumption levels of the selected commodities can be attributed to reduced levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Of the remaining 12 commodities, 2 magnesium and cadmium, stayed relatively the same, while the other 10, including iron and steel, all recorded decreases. Global consumption of iron ore is estimated to have fallen about 3.5 % or about 30 million tons. This is a greater decline than what was estimated for production of iron ore, which is down only 2.7% or nearly 26.5 million tons, suggesting an addition to stocks. The consumption trend for iron and steel has been declining since 1989. This has mainly been due to the continued drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Even as the European economy begins to turn upward, there may only be a slight increase in consumption of iron, steel, and cement, considering the high cost of construction needed to modernize factories and buildings in Eastern Europe. Many feel that the economies of these countries are limited by the current status of their industries.

Prof. Torstein Utigard's untimely death, in the spring of 2012, put an abrupt end to a meritorious career in the field of high temperature chemical process metallurgy. As an academic in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Toronto, Torstein made solid contributions to the advancement of knowledge pertaining to production and refining of both nonferrous and light metals, and to the development of inquisitive and innovative young people in extractive metallurgy. In this profile, the authors highlight aspects of Torstein's rich personality and of his contributions to his field of expertise.

For nearly two decades, MINExpo International has held the title to the biggest show in mining. The 2012 MINExpo is expected to be the biggest yet, with nearly 1,800 exhibitors rolling out the newest equipment and services across 12 halls. From September 24 to 26 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, MINExpo will present the newest in everything from automation and robotics to safety and communications equipment to reclamation services, and much, much more. The last MINExpo, in 2008, had nearly 38,500 visitors. The show?s sponsor, the National Mining Association, expects this year will be even bigger, with more than 40,000 visitors over three days. Twenty talks on the issues facing mining today are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, but the real action will happen out on the floor. That?s where ultra haul trucks big enough to carry as much as 363 t (400 st) of rock will be assembled next to underground loaders able to lift more than 20 t (22 st) in one scoop. Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, Sandvik, Atlas Copco: all the big names in mining equipment will be there. Their massive earthmoving equipment and mining machines are the centerpiece of the show. Preassembly for the largest pieces begins on August 6, 2012.

The recession that took hold of the domes-tic mining industry in 1981-82 finally abated somewhat in 1987, resulting from increases in many commodity prices, especially in the metals sector, and from continuing success in lowering operating costs. By no means was the work finished; the mining industry was in a sense entering a new era. The struggle for survival was still very evident for many companies and various commodities, but increasing productivity and profits were accompanied by indications that these trends were more long term than short term. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1987 had an estimated value of $26.3 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over the 1986 value. This is the fifth consecutive year that the value has increased. Except for a decrease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 15 of 16 years. The value of raw metals production increased by an estimated 28%, an impressive improvement since the drastic fall in 1982. Industrial minerals growth was comparatively flat, with an estimated in-crease in value of 0.1 %, continuing a trend of the previous 2 years. Metal mine production dropped considerably in 1982 and maintained its resultant lower level until 1987, when production significantly recovered.

Bureau of Mines engineers examined the chemical and biological treatment of sewage water designed in one case for reuse and in another for subsurface injection. In the first case discussed, approximately 6 million gallons per day of sewage are treated by the activated sludge process followed by tertiary treatment that includes ion exchange. The renovated water is used in the industrial complex. Liquid industrial waste is sent to a waste disposal facility where it is treated for injection into a deep subsurface formation. In the second case, a community of 3,000 people is using a lagoon sewage treatment system followed by subsurface injection of t- treated effluent. Subsurface disposal is used to avoid growth of algae and weeds in a nearby lake to which the treated effluent was originally discharged. The renovation of municipal water for reuse provides a source of water for industries in a semiarid region and may also provide a source for domestic use in densely populated regions where domestic water requirements have priority over industry needs. In addition both waste treatment systems provide examples of the use of subsurface waste disposal to avoid pollution of surface streams.

The Salobo Project will be the first Vale operation to use an HPGR mill to process copper-gold ore. The mine is located in Para state, southeast of the Amazon region in Brazil. The circuit was designed to treat 12 million metric tons per year of finely disseminated sulphide ore with high hardness. The comminution circuit comprises a gyratory primary crusher, secondary crushing utilizing two cone crushers, two 2 x 1.5 m HPGR operating in closed configuration with 6 mm screens, followed by two 26 x 40 ft ball mills. The concentration circuit consists of two rougher flotation stages using mechanical cells, regrinding with vertical mills, three cleaner stages with columns and one cleaner scavenger stage in mechanical cells. The concentrate is dewatered, filtered and transported by trucks and train to the port, to be exported. The circuit was designed on the basis of data obtained from a comprehensive laboratory and pilot plant campaign. The ore variability was assessed through simulation using data from a drilling core characterization program. The start-up of the industrial plant is planned for 2011. This paper describes the main aspects of circuit design, as well as information related to the beginning of the project construction.
