Task training is increasingly important in mining operations because of the ever-accelerating pace of technological innovations and the concomitant increasing complexity of mining equipment. This Bureau of Mines report describes two successful task training program In use in two open-pit taconite operations in northeastern Minnesota. The programs are different in approach, but both have improved safety and in- creased productivity while lowering costs. Methods of training both before and after passage of the 1977 Mine Safety and Health Act are described, and the impact of this act on task training at each operation is discussed. The report identifies four common principles that have contributed to the success of the two training programs and presents plans each operation has for improving future training through new technology.

A câmara de empuxo do Motor Foguete a Propelente Líquido (MFPL) L75 é composta de uma liga Cobre cromo, classe C18200. A jaqueta de refrigeração, responsável pela extração de calor, é feita de aço inoxidável AISI 316L. No que tange ao processo de fabricação, a união entre a câmara de combustão e a jaqueta de refrigeração é uma etapa crítica, pois envolve processos de união de materiais dissimilares e de componentes de geometria complexas. Este trabalho visa contribuir à fabricação do conjunto motor foguete, por meio da soldagem a laser entre a câmara e a jaqueta. Com o uso de um laser a fibra de alta potência, foi possível verificar que existe uma condição otimizada de solda sobreposta, inox sobre Cu(Cr), com potências entre 1.000 e 1.300 W e velocidades de soldagem de 0,05 m/min a 1 m/min. Embora as análises mostrem heterogeneidade microestrutural, pela dissolução parcial de uma fase na outra, obteve-se níveis de dureza aproximadamente constantes ao longo da profundidade da junta.

O estudo de recursos e caracterização de jazidas de minério de ferro é de extrema importância frente à demanda mundial deste bem mineral. A ocorrência de minério de ferro em Bodoquena, MS, desperta interesse sobre a viabilidade técnica e econômica deste recurso. A mineralização de ferro está associada à Formação Puga, caracterizada por metadiamictitos, quartzitos e filitos. Este minério de ferro possui matriz magnetítica de granulação muito fina, variando de 0,01 mm a, em raros casos, 0,2 mm, demandando moagem ultrafina para sua liberação. O beneficiamento do minério, realizado por separação magnética de baixa intensidade e flotação reversa, gerou produto magnetítico concentrado com teores de 64,9% de Fe, recuperando cerca de 47% do Fe contido e obtendo baixo teores de P (0,01- 0,04%), SiO2 (±4,5 %) e Al (±1,8%). A redução carbotérmica do minério se mostrou eficaz mediante a pelotização sem aglomerantes químicos, utilizando-se de coque de carvão mineral na composição de pelotas auto-redutoras. O produto final foi uma pelota reduzida a ferro metálico com pequenos resquícios não reduzidos e escória.

A bench-scale method for recovering lead and zinc from slimes and mill tailings from the Tri-State District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Dilute hydrochloric acid, containing sodium chloride, and chlorine gas were used to decompose the mineral constituents. Lead was electrolyzed from the pregnant acid solution, and zinc was precipitated from the depleted electrolyte by neutralization with lime. Up to 98 percent of the lead was recovered in an impure lead electro- deposit assaying approximately 85 percent lead. Zinc recoveries up to 90 percent of the total were attained in a precipitate assaying approximately 40 percent zinc.

With modern exploration techniques, it seems likely that an increasing number of the orebodies to be found in the future will be under alluvial fans or valley fill. As a result, a larger proportion of open pit mines will be confronted with the necessity for removal of substantial quantities of alluvial overburden; whereas in the past, for the most part, the open pit mine operator has dealt mainly with hard rock. If this proves to be the case, methods, equipment, and costs for alluvium stripping will become an increasingly important factor in open pit mine planning. Several operations are now faced with this situation, and various methods and equipment are used. At Pima Mining Company's operation the stripping ratio is in the range of 6/1 Well over half of the stripping volume is alluvium. The alluvium is removed almost entirely by carryalls hauling direct to a waste dump. Some removal has been accomplished by shovel and truck operation; more will be done by this means in the future. At American Smelting and Refining Company's neighboring .Mission Mine, nearly all alluvium removal is by large shovels and, trucks. U. S. Borax's Boron operation is accomplishing alluvium removal with carryalls but has been investigating other methods and equipment. The various operations in the Gas Hills Uranium District in Wyoming are stripping mainly with carryalls, although some small draglines are employed. The M. A. Hanna Company in the Mesabi Range employs large draglines and conveyor systems for removal of glacial fill. Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia strips overburden with a large excavating wheel and conveyor system. There are no doubt other open pit operations with which the writer is not familiar, that are handling large quantities of alluvial overburden.

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Detailed fragmentation data for different blast delay timing tests at the Red Dog mine in Alaska are analyzed. This work is a continuation of previous work in which the crusher output was found to be better described by the three-parameter Swebrec function than by the Rosin-Rammler function. For a crusher model, the x50 variable sufficed to describe changing crusher input while b and xmax could be considered fixed. For the crusher output from aggregated stockpile rock, as measured by digital image analysis using Split-Online, the constancy of b was not as apparent. In this paper detailed stockpile data, single Split data series, and sieved belt cuts of crusher product are analyzed using the Swebrec and truncated Rosin-Rammler functions. The variability of b is confirmed. By using specific fraction passing sizes a shortcut is presented that removes the need to do curve fitting to determine the three Swebrec function parameters.

Knowing the reduction of the concentration of iron in the mineral load extracted in the last decades and, therefore, greater need for comminution processes, there is no denying that iron ores tend to get increasingly thin for steelmakers. In Reactors such as Blast Furnace and others of fusion-reduction, where the reduction of the iron ore for the metallic iron for the steel production occurs, we observed that one of the alternatives is to agglomerate the raw materials in the form of briquettes, improving the kinetics of the chemical reactions, since ores in the form of fines impair factors such as the permeability required for reduction. These agglomerates are composed of a reducer, fines of ferrous materials and a binder material, and require, in addition to satisfactory Metallization, mechanical resistance, avoiding losses when the compound is fragmented during transport or during its deposition in the Steel Reactor. In the following work, Briquettes were produced with Charcoal, Pellet Feed, Molasses Cane and Hydrated Lime. The mixtures were pressed under different conditions of Pressure (1, 2 and 3 tons-force), and pressing time (20 , 60 and 100 seconds), aiming to analyze the influence of these two variables on the drop tests, mechanical resistance of the briquettes generated.

The anisotropy of Young's modules has been measured in a series of Cu-Zn alloys containing from 1 to 28 wt pct Zn and cold-rolled to 97.5 pct reduction in thickness. These modulus data show a transition in texture as a function of zinc content. In alloys containing 3 pct Zn or less, the texture is essentially that of copper. A transition is clearly seen to develop in 5 and 8 pct Zn alloys, and to have been completed in a 12 pct Zn alloy. Increasing the proportion of zinc to 28 pct does not produce any further changes in texture. The ease and clarity with which this texture transition can be seen in the modulus data is in great contrast with the inccertainty in the visual detertiination of the range of texture transition from a series of pole figures. It is also shown that the rolling texture of the high zinc content alloys cannot be a one-COIIIponenl texture, characterized by the (110)(112) ideal orientations, as usually assumed. A second, quite important component must also be present. Furthermore, the present data are inconsistent with matrix orientations on which the "oriented growth" hypothesis of the Formation of recrystallization textures is based. THE rolling textures of binary fcc alloy systems have generally been considered to lie between two terminal textures. One of these terminal textures is the copper type and the other is the 70:30 brass type. Alloys of intermediate solute content exhibit a texture which is said to be a transition between the two terminal textures. On the basis of efforts to correlate rolling and recrystallization textures, two concepts have been advanced in the literature on the nature of these transition textures. One school1 suggests that the addition of alloying elements, e.g., zinc, causes a gradual rotation about one of the (111) poles from the (358)( 523) ideal orientation of the copper-type rolling texture to the terminal {1 10)( 112) ideal orientation used to describe the rolling texture of 70:30 brass. This concept is depicted in Fig. 1 with the angle of rotation corresponding approximately to the zinc content and is designated here as the "rotational concept", since the ideal orientation of the transition textures varies continuously with alloy content. The other concept,' the "mixture concept", suggests that the copper-type rolling texture is a two-component texture. {358) (523) and {110)(112). The addition of alloying elements affects only quantitatively the relative amounts of these two components—a decrease in the amount of material in the {385}(523) orientation and an increase of that in the {110)(112) orientation with increasing solute content. An experimental distinction between these two concepts is essential to a better understanding of both the mechanism of formation of rolling textures and the subsequent formation of recrystailization textures in fcc metals. Because of the lack of resolution inherent in pole figures, it has not been possible to differentiate between the two concepts on the basis of this data. Both concepts, in fact, make use of the same set of pole figures but interpret them in a manner acco-rding to the view held.'" Experimental results obtained from inverse pole figures or selected-area electron diffraction3j4 simply -yield more refined pole figures but do not eliminate the ambiguity of interpretation. These advantages can only be realized, however, through careful and judicious design of the control and protection circuitry. Problems relating to the interaction of solid-state equipment on the electrical system and the special design considerations which apply to solid-state circuitry are examined. Design guidelines are provided for solid-state applications in the areas of: (a) equipment operated from a DC trolley wire, (b) drive systems for surface mining equipment, (c) AC motor starters, and (d) electromagnetic interference.

Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. An extensive study has been carried out to determine the true cause of floating slimes precipitation which sometimes occurs and badly affects the quality of copper cathodes. Soluhilities of floating slime compounds systematically measured for the ternary system As-Sb-Ri added solely or in combination with conventional copper electrolyte (63°C) and bench scale electrorefining experiments done by varying electrolyte composition, have shown conclusively that the level of Sb(V) ions plays a substantial role in the precipitation mechanism. It was, therefore, speculated that controlling the level of the less soluble S b ( V ) ions below a certain critical level should result in a complete elimination of the undesirable precipitation. This can be easily achieved, for instance, by the addition of a reducing agent such as SO2 gas and the simultaneous employment of a certain type of cheating agent that effectively removes excessive Sb and Bi from the contaminated electrolyte. Long-term pilot testing conducted in line with the above speculation has confirmed the SO2/chelating resin scheme to be industrially very attractive and feasible.

Previous work.-The general plan of work outlined for the Government fuel-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, included investigations relative to the briquetting of coals found in the United States. These investigations embraced the possibility of making satisfactory commercial fuels from lignite or low-grade coals which do not stand shipment well; of benefiting culm or slack coals that are wasted or sold at unremunerative prices; and of improving the furnace efficiency or ability to withstand transportation of good coals. This work was begun in 1904 and was continued in 1905, 1906, and 1907 as an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of methods for reducing waste and increasing efficiency in the utilization of the fuel resources in the United States. The initial briquetting tests at St. Louis, which included examination into the behavior of different coals or mixtures of coals in the briquetting press, experimental study of the merits of various substances used as binders, and consideration of the physical properties and resistance to weather and abrasion of the briquets, have been described.a They demonstrated that satisfactory briquets could be made from most coals, and that by briquetting the commercial value of many low-grade coals and lignites could be raised enough to more than cover the cost of manufacture. Norfolk plant.-The briquetting plant of the Geological Survey was moved from St. Louis, Mo., to Norfolk, Va., in 1907, along with the steam boiler and producer-gas equipment of the fuel-testing plant, as the closing out of the affairs of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the consequent removal of the buildings from Forest Park made a change of location necessary. Norfolk was selected largely with a view to the testing of coals for naval purposes, and because of facilities in the way of buildings and materials offered by the Jamestown Exposition Company. The work at Norfolk was chiefly devoted to making steaming and briquet tests of coals which reach the Atlantic seaboard at Norfolk and Newport News and are used by the navy and merchant marine. Two briquet machines were installed at the Norfolk plant, one being the English machine used in briquetting tests by the Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1905 and 1906, and the other an American machine. The briquets made at this plant were tested on locomotives of several railroads entering Norfolk and on the United States torpedo boat Buldle in comparison with the run-of-mine coal used in making them. Some of the tests were conducted by the railroads on their own locomotives, but those on the Biddle and on the locomotive of the Seaboard Air Line Railway were carried on by W. T. Ray and Henry Kreisinger, of the United States Geological Survey. Personnel.-Charles T. Malcolmson continued in general charge of the briquetting section after the removal to Norfolk until January 1, 1908. Walter J. Chapman continued in charge of operation of the briquet machines and of the observations reported under the heading "Details of manufacture." Charles L. Wright supervised the installation of the English briquet machine and later in the year continued the physical tests of briquets and the analyses in the chemical laboratory of the section until January 1, 1908, on which date he was placed in general charge of the work of the section. G. E. Ryder and Ralph Galt also continued with the staff, but the former was obliged to resign soon after the plant was in operation on account of ill health; the latter continued with the section as computer until the close of work on December 1, 1908.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research aimed at providing technology for a low-cost, high-recovery, environmentally acceptable mining system to recover the vast thin-seam coal reserves existing in the mountainous areas of the Appalachian region in the Eastern United States. As part of this research, the Bureau is evaluating new techniques to address these coal resources. This report summarizes the results of a worldwide technical search on thin-seam coal mining, the formulation of various methodologies for mining mountaintop thin seams, and the implementation and status of a physical model test program to validate and further develop the most promising concept-the "roof-fall-tolerant" mining system.

"Processing of ferrites has gained tremendous importance in recent times to meet the high performance demands on ferrites in keeping with the fast emerging· technologies. The quality of ferrite powders has strong influence on ·the performance of final device. Fabrication· of high performing ferrite components requires starting ferrite powders of precise stoichiometry, purity and microstructure. It is difficult to obtain these attributes by the conventional ceramic method. The key to obtaining quality powders lies in the· solution techniques. With this in view soft ferrites have been prepared by a wet chemical process, known as the citrate precursor method, which involves the formation of citrate complexes of the constituent cations. The advantages of this process are the ease of preparation and close control of composition, homogeneity, purity and particle size. Electrical and magnetic measurements on lithium ferrites have shown resistivity higher by more than two orders of magnitude compared to that observed for samples prepared by the conventional ceramic method, and low magnetic losses, making the ferrites specially suitable for high frequency applications.IntroductionProperties of ferrites are known to be sensitive to .their processing technique. A small deviation in the compositional stoichiometry of the ferrite affects its properties greatly. Soft ferrites such as Ni-Zn, Mn-Zn and Mg-Mn. are well known ferrites covering wide-ranging applications [1,2]. Lithiiim ferrites have also assumed technological importance for microwave applications and are potential substitutes for the expensive garnets [3]. Lithium ferrites are often doped with zinc to tailor the saturation magnetization required at high frequencies. Lithium and lithium-zinc ferrites, however, present difficulty to processing due to the volatile nature of both the cation components, namely Li and Zn. These ions are volatile at temperatures > 1000°C which makes their processing difficult. One of the main considerations of high frequency performance of ferrites is the high eddy current losses which prevent the interaction of the magnetic field with the ferrite component and hence impair device performance. These losses can be reduced by having a material of high resistivity. Electrical conductivity in lithium ferrite has been attributed to electron hopping [4] between the two vaience states of iron, Fe2+ <=> Fe3+, on octahedral sites. Maintaining the + 3 valence state of otahedral- Fe ions is thus a prerequisite for achieving high resistivity. The resistivity of ferrites is normally found to be low when processed by the conventional solid-state or the ceramic method [5]. This is attributed to (a) extensive ball-milling employed in the method to mix the component oxides results in non-stoichiometric compositions due to introduction of additional Fe ions on abrasion of steel balls during milling, (b) high processing temperatures involved which result in significant volatilization of Li and Zn ions creating thereby oxygen non-stoichiometry which results in reduction of Fe3 + to Fe2 +, (c) large and non-uniform grain sizes. In the present work, preparation of Li and Li-Zn ferrites by a non-conventional method known as a citrate precursor method [6, 7] which requires lower processing temperatures and duration is reported. The method gives stoichiometric compositions on account of homogeneous atomic-scale mixing of the constituent cations via the formation of metal-citrate complexes mixed in solution state. The method is also capable of giving small grain size which aids the oxidation ofFe2+ ions."

In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the Meadow Valley Range Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-156) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark and Lincoln Counties, NV, about 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, NV. The Johnston and Fitchett prospect, in the northern part of the study area, has more than 3 million tons of marginal perlite reserves suitable for many commercial uses. A preliminary mining feasibility estimate suggests perlite could be profitably mined from the study area; however, it is unlikely these perlite deposits will be developed in the foreseeable future because of unfavorable market conditions. Zeolite minerals occur in alteration zones adjacent to perlite deposits at the Johnston and Fitchett prospect, but high quality material is closer to potential markets. A metalliferous black shale unit containing 800,000 tons of subeconomic resources may extend into the study area at the Bradshaw vanadium prospect on the northwest boundary. Limestone, stone, sand, and gravel occurrences are wide-spread, but other suitable deposits in the region are more accessible to potential markets. Seven prospects in and near the study area were examined. The entire study area is leased for oil and gas exploration. A group of perlite placer claims covering more than 480 acres was located in the 1940&apos;s in the northern part of the study area. A small group of lode claims was located in the mid 1950&apos;s in the southwest part of the study area. No mining claims are currently (1985) held inside the study area. No mineral production is known from within the study area.

Polymeric hydrogels are natural or synthetic systems, which have gained interest due to their high biocompatibility with soft tissues. These types of hydrogels have been used for wound dressing as a drug delivery system. Here in this study the polymeric hydrogels based wound healing systems were prepared using poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP), poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG), agar and neomycin drug followed by gamma irradiation to promote crosslinking and sterilization. The influence of irradiation process with 25 kGy dose was investigated. The gel fraction and maximum swelling were estimated using physicochemical methods and found about 95% gel fraction and 1100% swelling after 8 h of immersion. Neomycin released from hydrogel was carried out by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry method and the drug concentration remained constant for 48 h. Hydrogel/neomycin exhibited antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus. With these results, it can be inferred that hydrogel/neomycin is a suitable candidate for wound dressing.

Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

"Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the Gas produced with crude contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion.Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no carious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks,be equally effective in counter- acting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1920, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a ""composite"" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co, in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the toot being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, and the Parkersburg Rig and Reel Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistance to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the tanks were not subjected to contact with the quantities o highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of the aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in large quantities of brine would be handled, for pact experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines."
