Serpentinite is an ultra basic and metamorphic rock consisting mainly of magnesium, calcium and silicon oxides. The rock under study is a host rock of chromite mine located in Andorinha, BA. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the rock's physical and chemical characteristics to be used as an additional fertilizer of acid soils. After comminution, rock samples were submitted to chemical analysis, XRD, SEM-EDS and TGA. Afterwards, particle size distribution was determined. Result analysis confirms that our rock consists mainly of dolomite, calcite and diopside. According to the result obtained, it can be said that the serpentinite rock has promising applications in agriculture for the correction and additional fertilization of acid soils. However, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the rock such as its dangers and toxicity as well as evaluate them according to the legislation for corrective acidity.

When most people think of explosives transport they think of a hazardous operation. We all know that we aren’t allowed to transport explosives through tunnels and are discouraged from traveling through heavily populated areas. Popular opinion suggests that explosives transport is a very risky operation. The authors decided to look into this a little more thoroughly and found just the opposite to be true. While there have been some disastrous world-wide accidents involving the transport of industrial explosives, this is not the case in the U.S. Over the past 10 years, accidents related to the transport of explosives used in mining and construction have resulted in 5 major injuries, 11 minor injuries, and no fatalities. Explosives and ammonium nitrate (AN) transport outside the U.S. has not had such a good record; there have been 4 major explosives or AN transport accidents resulting in a total of more than 300 deaths. Most of these fatalities could have been prevented if the accident site had been evacuated once the explosive or AN cargo began burning. The safe history of explosives and AN transport in the U.S. is due to diligent efforts by government, labor, and industry. However, accidents will become more common and disastrous if we become complacent.

THE Spanish mine is in Nevada County, California, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City by road, and 3 miles north of the town of Washington. The mill and surface buildings are on Poorman's Creek at an ele¬vation of 3,000 ft. About 35 men are employed at the property, which is producing 50 tons of ore per day. Electric power, purchased from the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., is brought in from Alleghany, seven miles away. In the early days the mine was operated by F. W. and P. R. Bradley. Between 1883 and 1899 the production was approximately $900,0)0 in gold. The ore treated during; that time yielded an average of 60 cents per ton and was mined and milled at a profit. The surface, oxidized, ore deposit was 30 to 100 ft. wide and was mined by the glory-hole method. The milling-plant at first consisted of a Blake crusher an-1 a small Huntington mill; later three large Huntington mills were added to the plant. In 1893 a new mill was built at a lower adit- It consisted of 10 stamps and four Huntington mills. The gold was secured by amalgamation, the recovery being about 50 per rent.

The installation of the Flotation Capacity Project flow sheet in the copper concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited has recently been completed. The project involved increasing the flotation capacity with Wemco tank cells and Jameson cells as well as changing the copper cleaner circuit layout. The engineering design and construction for the brownfield expansion had significant involvement from operational, maintenance and technical personnel adopting the same approach as the highly successful George Fisher project in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at MIM. The involvement of people familiar with the concentrator allowed for smooth integration of the changes into an operating concentrator with minimal downtime. Detailed circuit analysis over many years identified opportunities for improvements in the flotation circuit for both grade and recovery. This paper describes the program of work that led to the Copper Concentrator Flotation Capacity Project, and the implementation of the circuit expansion and flow sheet changes that resulted in an overall improvement in the circuit recovery.

The mining engineering design professional has limited practical and reliable tools for planning successful room-and-pillar stone mines using readily-available and collectible information. Three techniques are in common use today: the hard rock CANMET method of Hedley and Grant, the hard rock method of Stacey and Page, and the oil shale method of Hardy and Agapito. Other methods have been proposed, such as the USBM method of Obert and Duvall, the CSIR/Penn State method of Bieniawski, and the soft rock confined core method of Abel, Wilson, and Ashwin. However, the latter have practical shortcomings when applied to room-and-pillar stone mines such as developed for construction aggregate production. Ideally, the use of multiple techniques resulting in the same acceptable and reliable answer is the goal. Recently, in several underground stone mines areas of undersized pillars were examined. These undersized pillars apparently resulted from non-adherence to a mine plan. These undersized pillars now exhibit strong evidence of incipient failure such as slabbing, opening of through-going fractures, and hour-glassing. This situation allows examination of pillar designs at a ?safety factor? of essentially one. This rare opportunity allowed the examination of the suitability and adjustment of the first three design methods discussed, resulting in greater overall confidence in the methodologies.

Introduction The Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is the principal source of ore for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. Current production amounts to about 2,500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore a year. With approximately 1,600,000 feet of percussion drilling and 700,000 feet of diamond drilling being carried on each year, any improvements in drilling practice are important. Testing of new equipment and drill bits is a major function of the Testing Department at the mine. Tungsten carbide bits have been the subject of many tests since 1947 and have been used in operations since 1948. This paper details with the methods of testing and gives comparative data on performance and costs for tungsten carbide bits as compared to steel bits. Operational use of tungsten carbide bits started in April, 1948, and the extent of application has increased considerably since that time. The scale of employment is illustrated in Table I, which also shows other statistics on the use of carbide bits. Up to the present time eighteen types of carbide bits or tipped steel, as made by six different manufacturers, have been tested. In general, one supplier's bits have been used in operations, but some large-scale operational tests have been carried out with other types. The types tried are shown in Table II. To date they have been, the subject of 33 tests, covering the destruction of 804 bits over an observed footage of 42,586 feet.

Presplit blasting in strip mines is aimed at creating a safer wall to work under during the coaling operations. Good quality presplits are also necessary for effective throw blasting and drainage of the blast block. A less obvious but important function is full coal recovery. Optimum Colliery has been experiencing rock freezing against the presplit highwalls. The rock formed in patches along the highwall and trapped coal beneath it. The material that was &ozen comprised the rock between the back row of holes and the presplit and was often up to 3 m thick (the stand off distance between the back line and the presplit). The cozen rock formed predominantly along the bottom halfor bottom two thirds of the highwall. Along the top portion of the highwall, the presplit crack was usually well formed with visible barrels. This problem, or similar variations of it, is common on many South African strip-mine operations. Investigative work was carried out at Optimum Colliery to correct the problem. This paper presents the information and measurements that were made and discusses the solutions that have been applied to solve the problem. It was found that there were two independent causes for the tiozen material, with each contributing more or less to the frozen rock along the highwall. It was found that the presplit was not forming properly in places, especially closer to the bottom of the highwalls. The reasons and the solutions are presented. The second cause was found to be associated with reduced detonation velocity in the back line holes coupled with low confinement from long delay periods. Emulsion explosive that is sensitised with air bubbles was found to be prone to this phenomenon near the back of high-energy blasts. A change in the explosive formulation in the back-line holes, together with reduced delays in the back line, has resulted in significant improvements. The details are presented in this paper.

The development of the potential supply analytic system has advanced to the point that quantitative estimates of economically recoverable resources can be made as the final step of the traditional regional mineral resource assessment process. In 1983, the BOM and the ADGGS jointly developed a methodology to quantitatively assess the potential for undiscovered yet economically recoverable minerals within a designated geographic area. This methodology was first applied in the assessment of the undiscovered mineral potential of the Kantishna Hills, Alaska (White et al., 1987). At that time the assessment procedure combined a series of technical judgements regarding the major geologic, engineering and economic factors that influenced the occurrence and exploitation of mineral resources in the Kantishna Hills area. Since then the methodology has been further developed and enhanced, particularly with respect to the engineering and economic analysis components. The resulting Potential Supply Analysis System (PSAS) was recently used to evaluate the economic potential of selected types of undiscovered precious-metal deposits in the Tonopah quadrangle of Nevada (Gunther, et al., 1988) and, with some enhancements, has been used to estimate the' economic value of the undiscovered mineral potential of the WMNRA/SNCA study area. The PSAS has been designed to address five basic questions about the mineral potential of an area: 1) What alternative states of geologic nature are possible in the area of interest (e.g. How many and what types of undiscovered deposits could be present and what might be their grade, tonnage and depth attributes?) ?;

"Abstract: The use of micropiles has greatly increased the last twenty years, including applications involving low capacity micropile networks, seismic retrofitting, underpinning of existing foundations and high capacity foundations for new structures. This paper presents a field study of the behaviour of single hollow core micropiles in firm to stiff lean clay. Eight micropiles were installed using hollow bars (76 mm OD and 48 mm ID) with air/water flushing technique and advanced to a depth of 5.75m: six micropiles were installed using 228 mm (9 in) drill bit and two micropiles were installed using 178 mm (7 in) drill bit. All micropiles were instrumented with linear potentiometers to measure the vertical displacement of the micropile head and vibrating wire strain gauges to measure the axial strain at three points along the micropile length. Twelve full scale tests were conducted on the eight micropiles, four monotonic compression, four cyclic compression and four tension tests. Only the results of micropiles tested under monotonic compression is presented in this paper. The full scale load tests and a comparison of the performance of the micropiles with 228 mm and 178 mm drill bit are presented and discussed in terms of load-displacement curves, bond strength and tip resistance. The results showed that the proposed values of bond strength in FHWA give a conservative design of the hollow core micropiles. The micropiles constructed with 228 mm drill bit performed marginallybetter than the micropile with 178 mm drill bit in terms of the ultimate capacity.IntroductionMicropiles have been defined in a variety of ways, but can universally be classified as small diameter (less than 300mm), bored, and grouted in place piles (FHWA, 2005; Bruce et al., 1999; and Scherer et al., 1996). They can sustain axial (compression and tension) and/or lateral loads. Dr. Fernando Lizzi used micropiles in 1952 for underpinning of historic buildings damaged during World War II (Bruce D. A., 1988). Since then, micropile applications have expanded rapidly to include underpinning for existing foundations, in situ reinforcement, and seismic retrofitting and foundations for new construction. In particular, micropiles have graduated from use in low-capacity micropile networks toapplications as single high-capacity foundation.Micropiles capacity is affected by the construction technique, which involves drilling, placing reinforcement, and placing or pressurizing the grout. For example, the drilling method influences the degree of bonding between the grout and the ground, and the placement of reinforcement and the choice of grouting method have an impact on the development of the bonding. Bruce et al. (1997) showed that grout/ground bond is most affected by the grouting method. Based on the type of pressure applied during the grouting process, micropiles are classified as follows (FHWA, 2005): Type A: grout is placed under gravity pressure only using either sand-cement mortars or neat cement grout. Type B: pressures typically in the range of 0.5 MPa to 1 MPa are applied in order to inject the neat cement grout into the drilled hole while the temporary drill casing is withdrawn. Type C: involves two-step process; neat cement grout is first placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only as in type A, and prior to the hardening of this primary grout, a similar grout is then injected via a preplaced sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of at least 1 MPa. Type D: like type C, this type is a twostep process: neat cement grout is placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only (but pressure could be applied in some cases), additional grout is injected via a sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of 2 MPa to 8 MPa once the primary grout has hardened. I. R. Kramer (Martin Co.)—In a recent paper Nakada and Chalmers24 reported some observations of effects of surface conditions on the stress-strain curves of aluminum and gold single crystals. It is of interest to compare these observations with the results published previously in this journal and to comment on their general conclusions. In brief, Nakada and Chalmers concluded that the removal of the surface layer of a prestrained specimen lowered the stress-strain curve for aluminum but not that for gold. Further, they concluded that the surface work hardening of aluminum is confined to a depth not more than l0-3 cm. In our results25 published previously, it was pointed out that when prestrained specimens of aluminum and gold were polished to reduce the thickness upon reloading the initial flow stress decreased markedly. Further if a sufficient amount of metal was removed, the yield point failed to appear. With continued application of the load the stress-strain curve became coincident with that of the virgin crystal. We have found this behavior in some 100 determinations to hold consistently for gold, aluminum, and copper in both single and poly-crystalline specimens. The amount of strain required before the curves coincided depends upon the amount of metal removed but it is usually less than 0.01. This type of behavior is the same as that reported for metarecovery by other investigators.29 For aluminum specimens which have been prestrained and then heated to temperatures above 50°C we have consistently found that the stress-strain curve was typical of the orthorecovery28 type. In this case the stress-strain curve always lies below that of the virgin specimen. With respect to Ref. 24 the curves for aluminum are always below that of the virgin curves, while those for gold become coincident. This observation indicates at least for aluminum that the specimens must have been heated to a temperature high enough to cause recovery by an alteration of the internal dislocations. In addition, a recovery would be expected because of the removal of the surface work-hardened layer. Nakada27 had reported that, with his particular apparatus in which a perchloric acid polishing solution was used, the temperature of the specimen increased 65°C. The curves presented in Ref. 24 for gold do not permit one to detect the initial flow stress upon reloading after the surface-removal treatment. In fact, contrary to the method used by Nakada and Chalmers, the change in the stress-strain curve produced by a surface-removal treatment cannot be described in terms of a decrease in stress at strains much higher than that at the initial flow stress because of the coincidence of the curves at the higher strain values. With regard to the depth of the work-hardened surface layer, our data show for aluminum single crystals (7.5 by 0.3 by 0.3 cm) that the initial flow stress remained constant after 12 x 10-3 cm had been removed from the thickness. This depth was independent of the prior strain. For gold crystals this depth is somewhere between 10 x 10-3 and 20 x 10-3 cm. Y. Nakada (author's reply)— Kramer states,28 "for aluminum specimens which have been prestrained and then heated to temperatures above 50°C, we have consistently found that the stress-strain curve was typical of the orthorecovery28 type. In this case the stress-strain curve always lies below that of the virgin specimen." However, Cherian et a1.26 discovered that aluminum polycrystals annealed at 32" and 100°C showed the metarecovery behavior. They showed that the orthorecovery behavior did not appear until the crystals were annealed at 150°C. Kramer suggests28 that the drop in the flow stress of aluminum crystals after the surface removal by electropolishing24 may be due to the recovery caused by the temperature rise which may occur during the electropolishing.27 However, as indirectly stated in Ref. 24, the current density used in these electro -polishing experiments was 0.15 amp per sq cm. According to ref. 27, this current density should cause a temperature rise of only 40°C. This may cause the metarecovery but not the orthorecovery. Furthermore, as stated explicitly in Ref. 24, the surface removal was accomplished by chemical etching as well as by electropolishing. The results were the same for both electropolishing and etching. During the etching, the specimen temperature did not rise above 35°C. Some aluminum crystals were placed in water at 35° C for 30 min. These crystals did not show the decrease in flow stress. Therefore, it is quite clear that the flow-stress drop after the surface removal is not caused by a high-temperature recovery. However, as Kramer points out,28 it is quite possible that the internal dislocation structure may have been altered because of the removal of the highly work-hardened surface layer. However, how much this rearrangement contributes toward the flow-stress decrease is not known at present.

A comparative study of the mechanical properties of automotive steering knuckles produced by three different shape-casting related processes has been conducted. It involved the characterization of the tensile and fatigue properties of aluminum alloy A356 knuckles produced by the vacuum/pressure riserless casting (VRC/PRC), pressure counter pressure casting (PCPC), and the hybrid Cobapress (a casting-forging) processes, in accordance with the appropriate ASTM standards. Surprisingly, the knuckles produced by the hybrid Cobapress process exhibited the lowest strength. For example, the average 0.2% yield strength of the Cobapress knuckles was 31 MPa and 40 MPa less than that of the VRC/PRC and PCPC knuckles, respectively. However, between stresses of 150-200 MPa, the fatigue lives of the VRC/PRC, PCPC, and Cobapress knuckles were comparable. But above 200 MPa, the Cobapress knuckles exhibited the lowest fatigue life. The observed differences in the mechanical properties are attributed to the inherently different microstructures of the different knuckles.

This report presents computer instructions for calculating the performance of three-phase flow of gas, oil, and water. The calculated results for an illustrative example are presented. The example is the waterflood of a reservoir containing free gas in the reservoir as a result of the partial depletion of the oil by the expansion of the gas initially in solution. The flood pattern for the example is a 5-spot.

Canadian mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. will be the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the more than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Teck, the diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is providing 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) of gold, 1,950 kg (4,300 lbs) of silver and 903 kg (2,000 lbs) of copper sourced from its operations around the world. In addition to the raw materials mines, this year?s medals will make Olympic history as they will be the first to contain metals recovered from processing the circuit boards from end-of-life electronics (e-waste) that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. After mining or production through a variety of smelting and recovery processes, each metal has been refined to enhance the metal purity.

It is not proposed in this paper to go into all of the details of the problem. Instead, it mill be assumed here that the intrusive has the form and characteristics represented in Fig. I. According to W. 11. Emmons minerals are not deposited in appreciable quantities below the "dead line." Important amounts of ores of virtually all metals may be found around summit cupolas, but only gold, copper and zinc (in limited quantities) are usually associated with trough cupolas. Most students of ore deposits agree that temperature changes are largely instrumental in precipitating many ores in the "hood" and that the difference in temperature between the intrusive and that of the country rock may be the chief factor in determining the mineralogy of a deposit. A problem then of some interest is to correlate the principal physical features of the intrusive with the phenomena of heat conduction as evidenced by the cooling curves and the isothermal surfaces. Mathematical Theory In order to show the possible application of heat conduction to the interpretation of the processes of metalliferous deposition associated with intrusives, it will be as- sumed that the intrusive is a large par-allelopiped of dimensions, 2l, 2m, 2n. Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

In an investigation of the incineration of combustible wastes, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of dimensional parameters, process variables, and fuel properties on the operation of an incinerator that consisted of a single cylindrical combustion chamber in which all combustion air was supplied tangentially above the fuel. Construction and operation of three designs of such a device proved that the tangential overfire air design is effective in providing efficient combustion and low concentration of particulate matter in the effluent gas. A correlation was found that related burning rate with air rate, chamber diameter, and inlet port diameter. In one of the incinerator models, ignition was by radiation from a preheated surface. The temperature of this surface was required to be 1,400° to 1,600° F to insure ignition of moist refuse; however, this had little effect on combustion rates. In the combustion of moist refuse, evaporation of the water proceeded through the fuel bed as a wave, with an ignition wave following the evaporation.
