INTRODUCTION The gathering arm loader was patented by Joseph Joy in 1916. This unique machine motion became the standard of the industry and is used on underground loaders and continuous miners throughout the world. Figs. 1 and 2 show two types of gathering arm loaders. The gathering arm loader is a crawler-mounted ma¬chine primarily used for loading coal in a conventional mining system. Other uses also have been found for this machine in noncoal mines and other industries. MECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES The front or loading end of the machine, commonly called the head, consists of a tapered structural frame, hinged at the rear to the chassis and riding the ground at the front. Two bevel-gear cases are mounted in the head. They are connected by a timing shaft, which also acts as a conveyor drive shaft on most models. An eccentric disk attached to each gear case drives the gathering arms. The rear of the arms are attached to a swivel assembly. The motion derived from this arrange¬ment gathers loose material from the ground directly in front of the machine and loads it into the conveyor. Power for this drive is provided by two electric motors mounted under the gathering head. A speed reducer attached to each motor provides a gathering arm speed of approximately 5.2 rad/s (50 rpm). A torque limiting clutch is provided on each reducer to guard the system against sudden impact loading and continual overloading of the motors. The conveyor consists of an open box section through which a universal-type chain carries the ma¬terial to the rear of the machine, where it is discharged into the haulage vehicle. The chain is driven by a sprocket located on the timing shaft between the two gathering-head bevel-gear cases. On some large loader designs, primarily for noncoal applications, the chain is driven by a separate gear motor at the discharge end of the conveyor. However, the system driven by the timing shaft is used most widely. The conveyor frame is hinged just to the rear of the gathering head. It can be raised or lowered by hydraulic cylinders to the desired discharge height. The conveyor frame also is designed to pivot 0.79 rad (45°) either side of the center, just to the rear of the chassis. This feature increases the maneuverability of the ma¬chine and makes it possible to discharge material into the haulage system when in tight quarters such as when turning a crosscut. This function also is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. The chassis of the loader consists of two crawler frames and cross members, holding the frames in position. The frames are either welded or cast as¬semblies. Replaceable wear runners are provided on the frames to take the wear generated by the crawler chain. An adjustable take-up idler keeps the crawler chain in proper adjustment for maximum life. The drive system for the crawler chains varies with the manufacturer, but it generally is one of two basic designs. One system provides a traction motor for each side of the machine, coupled to a speed reducer. A spur and bevel-gear train transfers power to the sprocket, which drives the crawler chain. INTRODUCTION Square-set timbering of stopes developed from stull support methods because veins too wide for stulling were being mined. In general, the void caused by the stoping of the ore is filled with a system of interlocking timbers. Timber framework supports the wall rock, the mining operations, and provides access. A timbered stoping method can be used in all widths of veins at any dip. The timbering can be normal and parallel to the planes of the walls or at angles to these planes. Irregularly shaped ore bodies can be worked by timbered methods. Pinching or swelling of the vein will not adversely affect the method. Timbered stoping is especially advanta¬geous where weak ground is encountered in the vein or the wall rock. The ground is unsupported only until timber sets are stood. These stopes can be filled with sand or waste when desirable. The customary method of developing a square-set timbered stope with haulage drifts above and below and timbered raises on each endline is shown in Fig. 1. The drifts are timbered the full stoping length. The raises have two compartments with the manway and timber slide in one compartment and the chute in the other. The drifts and the raises cannot be widely spaced as handling timbers is an important consideration. Stoping can begin immediately above the drift timber and continue in both directions and upward from the raise. Breasting down each blast round for only one timber set laterally is the common practice. The blasted ore falls to a lower floor where it is slushed or trammed to the chute. Drilling can proceed on the upper floor while broken ore is being removed from the stope. As shown in Fig. 2, square-set timbering may be used in cut-and-fill stopes to support the back and walls until fill is added. There are various ways of developing an ore block for timbered stoping. Fig. 3 depicts the situation for the main haulage in the vein with an intermediate drift separated from it by a sill pillar. The ore is slushed into the chute connecting the two drifts. The situation in Fig. 4 is identical to that in Fig. 3 except that no sill pillar is used. In Fig. 5, the haulage drift development is done in the footwall with crosscuts driven to intersect the ore body. The intermediate drift development is above the crosscuts with a minimal sill pillar. The main bottleneck in timbered stoping is in the timbering process. Drilling in the stope is generally held up while timbering is done. Two or three men are re¬quired to do the timbering and an additional one or two men are needed to transport and raise or lower the tim¬ber. Good organization is essential to timbering. Skill must be exercised in standing the timber to support the ground and still maintain good production. Many in mining believe that the industry is slipping behind in public image, in public mineral education and, particularly, in mining's basic right to do business. It is critical to turn things around - to change the rules of the game soon - before mining loses any chance of recovery. In the industry's experience, there is a technique of project development and operation that can help gain ground on public opinion. Only recently has this technique had a name, and that is sustainable development. What is sustainable development? Sustainable development is broadly accepted and supported by the international business community. And significant thought and work has been devoted to the subject. Research into the topic was initially confusing because the definitions of sustainable development are written in terms the writer, and his or her constituency understands. To some, it refers to environmental protection. To others, it is about social responsibility. And to the developer, it is about economic benefit. Slowly a theme emerged from the research that seemed to be part of all the definitions. That theme has three parts. First, the development, whatever or wherever it is, must contribute economic value to the developer and the stakeholders of the development. Stakeholders in this context include employees, neighbors, residents of the surrounding area, citizens of the country, suppliers and all others affected by the development. Next, sustainable development must contribute environmental value. This means that at a very minimum it must be neutral and not cause irreparable damage. And last, and what is new for miners and most other businessmen, it must contribute real social value to the stakeholders. How to use the concept? With that three-part theme as a working definition, the mining industry must find ways to use that “the challenge is for an individual company to translate what sustainable development means for them. There is no one model..." Donald W. Gentry is president and chief executive officer of Polymet Mining and former professor emeritus of mining engineering at Colorado School of Mines. He added: "While simple to state, the concept is anything but simple to implement. Present trends indicate ... one wins the sustainable development argument by staking out the high ground early..." In other words, start using sustainable development principles at the beginning of the project. New ways of doing business The mining industry's challenge is to implement sus¬tainable development universally around the world. Paternalism as a way of doing business is dead and a new model of doing business is emerging. All types of businesses are learning to deal with the stakeholders of new developments. Mining cannot be an exception to these trends. To understand how the international mining business came to sustainable development, it is useful to look back a few years. For many North American mining engineers, there were few opportunities for foreign assignments from the 1960s to the 1980s. American companies had been asked to leave many of the Latin American countries. Africa was going through a continent-wide upheaval. The Soviet Union and China had Eastern Eu-

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended $24 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale, some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than 1. m (3 ft) in width to pipes with a surface area of 128 ha (316 acres). The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments. Diamond content ranges from trace to economic concentrations. The exploration discoveries were facilitated by early recognition that the petrography, mineralogy and chemistry of the diatremes varied from the classical kimberlites of Kimberley, South Africa, to unusual more highly fractionated, alkaline, silicic varieties having affinities with leucitelamproite. Indirect methods of exploration were used, primary reconnaissance work being stream gravel sampling for kimberlitic indicator minerals. Evaluation showed Ellendale diamonds are 90% gem and near gem, but the low grades and tonnage render the deposits unpayable at today's diamond prices. After discovery in late 1979 and completion of a feasibility study by the end of 1982, evaluation studies proved Argyle to be economic. Alluvial diamond mining commenced in 1983 producing 6.2 million carats (Mct) that year, 60% being of industrial quality. Open-pit mining of the AK1 lamproite should start in 1985/1986 at a rate of 3 million t/a (33 million stpy) and produce 25 Mct/a, making this mine, and Australia, the world's largest producer of diamonds by weight. The revenue from diamond deposits is a function of the grade and the value of the diamonds. The grade is the product of the frequency of occurrence of the diamonds (stone density) and the mean stone size; the value of the stones is strongly related to their size distribution. During evaluation of the West Australian deposits, the diamond distribution was found to vary markedly in stone density and stone size. These variations corresponded with changes in the rock type hosting the mineralization. As a consequence, geological mapping of individual lamproites within the multiple vents and careful monitoring of the diamond distribution became an important part of the evaluation work. Similar variations in stone size and frequency were found to accord with separate alluvial terraces and fan gravels derived by erosion from the Argyle AM lamproite.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. "The adoption of tunneled combined sewerage interceptors and outfalls leads to design linings which are often subject to internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining. However, improvements in concrete technology and the need to seek efficiency in terms of time and costs, have driven designers to consider single pass segmental linings. The Riachuelo Sanitation project in Buenos Aires is subject to these constraints both upstream and downstream of a sewage treatment plant. This paper describes how the challenges of up to 2 bar pressure differential have been addressed by careful analysis of soil structure interaction to ensure that the full benefit of external ground pressure is realized, resulting in a more optimal design for the constructor both in terms of cost and time. INTRODUCTION The construction of long sewerage interceptors and outfalls is becoming an increasingly common piece of infrastructure for modern urban cities facing a large water front and estuarine conditions, which are under a significant environmental burden imposed by decades of sustained growth. Such works intercept most of the distributed sewage discharges to then divert them to a central treatment point from which it will be finally diffused via an outfall into a water body capable to accept these discharges under acceptable environmental conditions. Depending on the magnitude of the sewage load to be handled, the configuration of the urban environment and the conditions of the receiving water body, both in terms of oceanography forces and seabed conditions, these schemes will vary in length, conveyance capacity and design and construction requirements. When conditions permit, the current trend is the execution of long outfalls using flexible solutions (such as the use of HDPE pipes) which usually require some form of concrete ballasted weights to resist off shore dynamic forces when directly laid over the sea bed. However, this concept faces limitations when the conveyance requirements indicate the need for large diameters (typically above 3000 m) and also when the outfall needs to avoid deep features off shore such as navigation channels. When this occurs, tunneling, particularly segmentally lined tunnel constructed by TBM emerges as the most feasible approach for large diameter, long deep outfalls. The operating conditions often result in internal pressures that are larger than the external pressures, resulting in significant tension loads in the lining. The need to meet stringent durability conditions for the normal design life of 100 years often drives client specifications to require a double pass solution with a cast in situ secondary concrete lining."

Severe climatic conditions in mines are normally associated with working at depth. More precisely, it is a matter of working in regions of high strata temperature, since, for example, some coal mines in the Ruhr have strata temperatures at 1000 m which are matched only at 3 times that depth in the South African gold mines. In Britain we are perhaps fortunate in encountering strata temperatures in our deeper coal mines some 10-15 K lower than at the same depth in the hot mines of the Ruhr. Nevertheless the problems of high temperatures and humidities in UK mining operations, which in the past have been confined to a few specific sites, have in recent years become more widespread, and there is every reason to suppose that the trend will continue. Clearly strata temperature is not the only .causative factor. Long ventilation circuits serving districts remote from the shaft must also play a part, while the heavy use of machinery and the rapid, rates of excavation of modern mining methods are obviously important. It is necessary to understand the mechanisms of all such factors, and to measure their magnitudes and fluctuations, if remedial measures are to be properly designed or predictions made which are accurate enough to be of use in ventilation planning. This paper presents the results of a long-term (and continuing) investigation carried out in several mines to measure the major sources of heat and moisture on longwall districts and trunk conveyor roadways. The variation with time of these sources is reported, and the resultant effect on the climate is considered. In their investigations of the heat exchanges occurring in a whole mine Oakes and Hinsley (1955-56)1 listed and estimated the magnitudes of a large number of heat sources. Some of these, namely autocompression of the air in the shaft, diesel engines and compressed air mains, do not apply to the present investigations, which refer to longwall districts with conveyor transport and no compressed air supply. Others, such as oxidation of coal and, desorption of methane, have not been taken into account in the measurements, but are discussed later. One other source, the importance of which was pointed out by Gracie and Matthews (1975)2, is the coal on the conveyor, a form of strata heat emission, but one which is strongly dependent on the rate of coal production. The heat emissions measured in the present investigations were the energy consumed by electrical machinery, the heat conducted from the strata and the heat lost by the conveyed coal. Most of the emitted heat was removed from the district by the ventilation air, and was measured by continuously recording the enthalpy of the air at fixed stations. The heat removed by service water, supplied for machine cooling and dust suppression, was also measured. Account was of course taken of the relatively minor changes in level around the districts, in terms of the potential energy gained or lost by the coal and by the ventilation air (autocompression).

INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Froth flotation is a physico-chemical process for separating finely ground minerals from their associated gangue material. The process involves chemical treatment of a finely divided (ground) ore in a water pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain of the mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles then carry the selected minerals, called valuable, to the surface of the pulp to form a stabilized froth which is removed and recovered. The unattached gangue material remains submerged in the pulp and is either discarded or reprocessed. To obtain the adherence of the desired mineral particles to the air bubbles, at least two specific steps must occur: a hydrophobic (water hating) surface film must be formed on the particles to be floated along with a hydrophillic (water wetting) film on all other particles; and a controlled bubble surface tension interface must be maintained, allowing for high particlelbubble collision frequency and efficient attachment or sticking of the particle to the bubble once collision has taken place. In most flotation applications, the above two steps are controlled by chemical flotation reagents. The collector is a chemical reagent which produces the hydrophobic film on the valuable mineral particle and is the primary driving force that initiates the flotation process. The frother is a chemical reagent which influences the collision frequency and attachment efficiency of hydrophobic particles and air bubbles. Thousands of research papers and books have been published on the chemical theory behind sulfide mineral collectors, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Fuerstenau, et. al. (1985), King (1982), Leja (1982) and Moudgil and Somasundaran (1987), This article will only address and summarize some of the more practical aspects of collector usage. The industrial scale practice of froth flotation in sulfide mineral concentration has changed little since the 1950's. For example, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of sulfide mineral collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. A very interesting and informative history of collector development has been given by Crozier (1984). In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years. As a result of the above environment which makes reagent cost/performance analysis difficult for new reagents, there is a strong tendency for the flotation operation to use, and reagent companies to supply, as cheap as possible raw materials and manufactured products that are quite general in application. In the last 20 years or so, there has been increasing technical effort to tailor make reagents for specific applications, but to date such work has had little commercial impact. It is clearly the hope of this author and others that this situation will change in future years as technology improves and pressure for improved flotation performance intensifies. This article is a condensation of collector usage trends quantified as part of a comprehensive industrially oriented applications program on froth flotation organized by Klimpel and coworkers (1979-1987) and as reported in various countries that participated in the program from 1978-1983. INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within dacite porphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding metasediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in metasediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna. Several new gold discoveries were made in older Early Tertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

"As a new method to support gate roadways, rock bolting has been widely used in the big coal enterprises for its superiority. The disturbed stress field of surrounding rock and anchor pre-stress field were divided into 3 areas in consideration of s1, s3. The surrounding rock failure form and characteristic were analyzed in combination with parameter f, the failure mechanism was explained using the slip line theory, furthermore, the rock bolting mechanism and its arrangement were studied. After roadway excavation, the tensile stress area appeared at the surface of the surrounding rock. The failure type changes from shallow tension-shear form into deep compression-shear form and the failure shape is an “incense burner”, surrounding by high risk failure area in butterfly shape. The maximum principle stress in roof appears discontinuous distribution because of layers separation. The failure type of surrounding rock is intensity-stress environment-weak plane control model. The internal reason of roadway macroscopic failure is the displacement between the surface plastic area and the deep elastic region along the tangential direction of slip line. In condition of rock bolt support, there is one-way tensile stress area in small range at the surface of surrounding rock, inside is the bidirectional compressive zone in uniform distribution form, stress environment is improved by the superposition of anchor pre-stress and disturbed stress field, anchor rock bolt arrangement and pre-tightening force distribution is decided according to the distribution of f parameter. Finally, supporting method and parameter reasonability was proved by the roadway deformation monitoring, damage depth drilling peep test in the 8101 transportation roadway in a mine.Introduction The stability of roadway support is very important to the safety and sustainable development of coal mine. In recent years, the focus of China's coal mining industry began to move to West China, the thick-extra thick coal seam is developed in the West. The latest technology and equipment have been put in to service, the occurrence condition of thick coal seam and the increasing of productivity lead to the cross section of the roadway increasing continually, hence, it is more difficult to control the surrounding rock. At present, the most common way to support the roadway is rock bolt (cable) support (Wang 2007); Scholars have been deeply studied on the mechanism of rock bolt. It is reported (Wang et al 2012, Gao 2007, Zhang and Yuan 2006) that the influence of rock bolt on physical and mechanical parameters of coal and rock mass in the anchorage zone, It is believed that the rock bolt can improve the peak strength of surrounding rock, especially the post peak strength, and the failure mode of rock mass under the rock bolt support is analyzed. It is reported (Wang et al 2014, Xiao et al 2013, Li et al 2007, Yan et al 2012), according to different geological conditions, the failure mechanism of surrounding rock and supporting technology of the whole coal roadway were studied. Focus on the failure mechanism of roadway surrounding rock, different forms of high strength support methods were proposed, which achieved good results. It is reported (Wang et al 2012a, Zhang et al 2011, Wang et al 2012b, Kang et al 2010, Zhang et al 2010, Kang et al 2007) that the supporting mechanism of pre-stressed anchor was analyzed from the point of the distribution of the maximum principal stress in the pre-stressed anchor field, and the influence of the rock bolt support parameters and surrounding rock characteristics on the supporting effects were studied. Based on the latest research results, this paper analyzed the failure mechanism of surrounding rock of coal roadway, proposed the high strength anchor net cable combined supporting technology based on the feature of stress zoning distribution of surrounding rock, to provide reference for the coal roadway rock bolt (cable) support technology."

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Outside organizations generally come to us with detailed "starting" point records which relate to some specific group requiring study. Longwall coal mines are frequently located in steep mountainous areas with narrow valleys. In order to protect surrounding watersheds and residential structures, support areas are left under the valleys. However, the indirect subsidence effects to the residential structures due to the potential topography effects can be a serious problem. The present study examines a longwall mine in southern West Virginia located in an area with an average slope of about 30°, or 58%, and with an overburden depth that varies from 49 to 376 m (160 to 1,235 ft). A comprehensive investigation was carried out to assess the subsidence and topography effects, as well as other ground control issues at this site. Surface and subsurface movements and deformation were predicted and their direct effects on nearby streams and structures were assessed. The potential and indirect subsidence influences of surface topography effects were assessed. The techniques and results of this investigation are presented in this paper. It shows that the direct and indirect subsidence effects on the streams and residential structures should be insignificant. The post-mining observations agreed well with this study.

Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. Various geological anomalies are encountered in underground longwall mines, and they cause stability problems. In this study, a number of detailed two-dimensional finite-element models were made, consisting of mine floor, roof, coal seam, shield structure, gob, etc. to analyze the influence of geological anomalies on longwall shields. Two different categories of anomalies were simulated. The first ones are shear zone and sandstone channels, with variable sizes and locations in the roof. The second category is fault or fracture plane, with variable friction factors, locations, and orientation of the fracture plane. The results of the analyses are' integrated with an artificial intelligence system for developing a forecasting guideline for prevention of underground hazards due to the existence of geological anomalies.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. The first step in the development of a gold deposit is the detailed mineralogical examination of the ore types, major and minor mineral constituents and their association. It is extremely difficult and expensive mineralogically to characterize the occurrence and association of gold with other minerals for low-grade refractory ores (less than 0.1 troy oz/t Au). Even if a mineralogist can identify a gold-associated particle or two, one wonders how representative they are of the deposit. What alterative does a metallurgist have for characterization of gold-bearing ores? LaModel is a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary element method, which is utilized to analyze the displacement and stress in flat-lying, tabular orebodies. In coal mining, the accuracy and reliability of LaModel are proven with the utilization of the Mark- Bieniawski coal pillar strength and the stress gradient formula with proposed methodologies. However, the application of LaModel is limited to coal mines due to the default coal pillar strength properties. Recently, the stress gradient functions have been established and used to derive concentric rings of zones to simulate stone mine pillar yielding in LaModel. Also, to gain a robust understanding of the brittle failure mechanism and its effect on pillar strength, an S-Shaped failure envelope, where rock mass' cohesive and frictional strength components mobilize as a function of confinement (e.g., minimum principal stress), has been implemented into FLAC3D software. Therefore, by employing brittle failure criteria, the pillar strength stages at various width-to-height ratios and different pillar dimensions are estimated for four benching stages. The estimated pillar strengths and stress gradients for benching conditions are then used to calibrate LaModel in-seam material properties and compare stresses computed by LaModel and FLAC3D. Consequently, this study aims to increase the safety measures in the stone mining industry by implementing the practical use of LaModel for underground stone mines' initial development to various stages of bench mining.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Open cut-and-fill stoping for many years was prob¬ably the most widely used mining method in under¬ground metal mines. Then for a time this method was largely supplanted by the blasthole stope. It again be¬came popular as many mines reached depths or grades where methods requiring large open voids to remain open for extended periods of time became unsuccessful, often as a result of excessive dilution. The open cut-and-fill method is very flexible and is readily adaptable to almost any ore body. The standard application requires that a slice of ore usually 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) thick be removed from the back of the stope, and as the ore is taken down, the back is dressed and rockbolted. After the back is secured, the broken rock is removed through rock passes to the level below. When the rock has been removed, the rock passes are extended upward the height of the ore removed, the stope is backfilled, and another cycle is mined. This method is best employed in plunging ore bod¬ies with considerable vertical extent, ore areas that re¬quire selective mining, ore areas where weak wall con¬ditions exist, and ore bodies that have an ore value that will carry this relatively expensive mining method. Blast¬hole stoping, shrinkage stoping, and other mining meth¬ods that do not employ rock passes in a stope are not efficient in plunging or flatly dipping ore bodies because the footwall makes ore removal quite difficult. Since mining is accomplished by taking down slices of the back, only small areas of the wall rock are exposed at any one time, and these only for short periods. Due to limited back height, areas of uneconomic rock may be left in place, or they may be mined and the material gobbed in the stope. Because the miners in the stope must work under freshly blasted areas, the amount of ground control is usually great. The volume of rock that is broken during one section of mining is relatively small and the amount of nonproductive work required is high. This results in limited productivity for the scope and, be¬cause of the nonproductive work that must be done on a regular basis, the production from the stope may be quite cyclical. SUITABLE ORE BODIES The open cut-and-fill method may be adapted to al¬most any type of ore body with a relatively high vertical extent. The ore body must be accessible at both top and bottom as well as at regular intervals throughout its vertical extent. Although adaptable to most ore bodies, the method is probably best employed where the ore has poor con¬tinuity and where most types of bulk mining would pro¬duce excessive dilution. In areas of poor ore continuity, the capability of continuous and extensive sampling dur¬ing the mining of each cycle makes this method very desirable. This capability also minimizes the amount of evaluation sampling that must be done before mining is started. Because of the extractive system used, the size and shape of the stope may be as readily changed as the sampling mandates. Probably the only ore characteristic demanded is that the ore has strength enough to be sup¬ported through the use of rockbolts or cable bolts dur¬ing the mining and backfilling cycles. Good planning, systematic sampling, and careful supervision will pro¬duce a product with less dilution than any other open stoping method. PLANNING Evaluation Planning Once it has been decided that the open cut-and-fill method would be the most efficient for mining a par¬ticular ore body, the next considerations would probably be the availability of an economical backfill material and the selection of an efficient transport system for this material. Although hydraulically transported mill tail¬ings are the most widely used product, this is not always practical due to mill location or the quality of the tailings. In such cases, backfilling may be used. The type of backfill and the type of equipment used will determine if a floor or capping on the backfill is required to minimize dilution during ore removal. The early selection of rock removal equipment is im¬portant since equipment usually determines the amount of development work required to bring a stope into pro¬duction and the size of the openings needed. The size and continuity of the ore body will usually determine the type of loading equipment. The use of slushers or load¬haul-dump (LHD) equipment captive in the stopes will minimize the amount of development. If the ore con¬tinuity is such that a ramp system for extraction can be used, the cost of development will be increased but the flexibility of continuous mining will minimize the cycli¬cal nature of the production. The height of the mining section usually is deter¬mined by the strength of the wall rock and the amount of back bolting required. Once this has been decided, the appropriate drilling equipment can be chosen. The number and sizes of the rock passes employed depends upon the type and size of the extractive equipment and the type of backfill that is to be used. Since the miners must enter and leave the stope each shift, the level inter¬val is usually maintained at approximately 45 m (150 ft). Access from the level above into the stope must be main¬tained at all times. The employees perform all the work in the stope and adequate ventilation must be provided. Stope Planning Due to the flexibility of the method and the vari¬ability of the ore zones, layout is usually done on a stope basis. In areas where continuity is a problem, the size of the stope is usually determined by the boundary of the ore (with all of the ore within that boundary being removed). In areas of good continuity where ramps are to be used, the length of the stope may be determined by the length of time each of the cycles (preparation, back¬fill, mining, and ore extraction) requires.
