Computers have been used in the minerals industry for about 30 years and, in a few cases, longer. With the explosion of microcomputing during the past 10 years, computers have changed how many minerals producers go about their work. What computer usage trends are active in the minerals industry today, and what can we expect in the future? In general, computer usage is accelerating. Engineers and geologists are becoming increasingly "application literate." Soft¬ware is increasingly oriented to how people work. User interfaces have improved, so most users need to know only a mini¬mum of system commands and structure to work with a computer. Most industry professionals know how to use word processing and spreadsheet pro¬grams. AutoCAD appears to be the drawing program of choice. One reason is availability of training and add-on programs for earthwork, mapping, contouring, etc. Another frequently cited reason for using CAD is the ability to quickly make changes to a map or design, as compared to hand methods. Management is moving toward greater acceptance of computer usage. Computers do not need workman's compensation ... even though they may get sick and take a few days off! Computer hardware used in most minerals-producing companies is strongly personal-computer based and likely to remain so. The 486 personal computers are inexpensive as compared to workstations and provide the power and speed to run most applications in minerals industry engineering offices.

Creative ideas and endeavors require imaginative and positive responses, if they are to be reduced to practices. This lecture will define the plurastic roles of various technical disciplines which were important in the development of the LIX reagents. Specific personalities, facts, and events will be used to trace the development from an idea, to the exciting acceptance and practice of the technology. An objective analysis of the entire LIX reagent development, spanning twenty-five years experience of the author, will be given, these will be used as a basis for critical examination of how the various technical disciplines could improve their effectiveness in advancing future technologies.

The volume of gases produced in major and trace amounts as a result of detonation of explosives in an underground mine was determined. The volumes of major gases (CO, CO2, NO and N02) were measured immediately following detonation, during the mucking operation, and following the removal of muck. Tests to identify and quantify the gases produced in trace amounts were performed following the detonation only. The composition of the gases produced varied significantly depending on the composition of the explosive/blasting agent. An average of 95% of the gases produced were found in the test chamber immediately following the detonation, while 2% was found in the chamber following the removal of the muck. Several compounds were identified in trace amounts. Of particular interest was the detection of benzene, toluene, butenes, ethyl benzene and naphthalene since exposure to some of these compounds, even in trace amounts, could present a serious health hazard.

Analysis of discontinuous rock masses for engineering design purposes requires information about fracture characteristics. For such studies, fractures or other elements of the rock fabric (bedding, foliation, etc.) should be considered in a statistical manner because they generally have high frequencies of occurrence and are discontinuous over the design area. A practical design procedure includes defining structural domains as those areas which contain fractures with similar orientation patterns. Within a structural domain, the statistical distributions of fracture set characteristics (spacing, fracture density, dip, dip direction, etc.) may be computed from mapped data and then used to quantitatively describe the rock fabric. These distributions can then be randomly sampled (using Monte Carlo techniques) to simulate the rock fabric and to help define potential failure surfaces along fractures. 1 The prediction of failure geometries is an essential part of stability analyses used in designing rock slopes or underground openings. In current probabilistic design procedures, Monte Carlo techniques that rely upon the iterative generation and analysis of deterministic instability models do not incorporate spatial aspects of the random variation in fracture set characteristics, 1,2 but consider the characteristics to be spatially independent.

The wind tunnel has been used extensively for mine ventilation research and continues to be a valuable tool. The advent of the powerful personal computer has reduced the use of wind tunnels because several flow problems car be simulated and investigated quickly. This paper describes the recent design and construction of a wind tunnel which is now being used for mine ventilation aerodynamic research and teaching purposes. The wind tunnel has a square cross section measuring 900 by 900 mm and is 8485 mm long from the entrance to where it joins the fan. The tunnel was designed as an open circuit suction type and is attached to a 7.5 kW variable pitch axial flow fan capable of producing over 6 m3/s of airflow. The entire length of the wind tunnel can be used for flow investigations and all activities are visible since the sides are made of plexiglass. Results are presented from the test program to show that even without honeycombs and screens air flow symmetry is achieved.

An operational 9 meter (30-foot) high gold heap leach pile was investigated by excavating test pits up to 6 meters (20 feet) deep, obtaining bulk and relatively undisturbed thin wall drive samples, and observing the ore distribution patterns exposed in the test pit walls. The clayey ore is crushed, agglomerated with lime and cement, and deposited on the leach pads using a radial stacker. Laboratory tests performed included moisture-density, gradation, compaction, Atterberg limits, permeability (constant and falling head), and triaxial strength tests. Discussion is presented on the effects of agglomeration on the permeability and strength characteristics of the in-place ore. Also discussed is the effect of deposition of the ore using the radial stacker.

In 1988, the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) published an information bulletin stating that whole diesel exhaust should be considered a probable carcinogen. Since then, regulations across Canada and the United States (Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA) have looked at appropriate exposure limits for underground mine workers. In Canada, an interim standard of 1.5 mg/m3 Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) has been adopted by some provinces and is being looked at by others. MSHA is considering levels as low as 0.5 mg/m3 soot. Golden Giant, being aware of regulatory developments, decided to look at means of reducing diesel particulate on thier large production machinery. This machinery (LHDs and haulage trucks) is powered by Detroit Diesel 71N Series engines and is used to produce 3000 tonnes of ore/day with a longhole mining technique. Having looked at the various control technologies, it was decided to evaluate the potential of using diesel particulate filters with a copper-based fuel additive for regeneration (the process by which collected particulate is burned off). This paper outlines the control technology used and the results of the field evaluation indicating the benefits to the underground mine worker.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner being considered for installation at Sunshine Precious Metals Inc. 's Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause-and-effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences are useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

A team of noise specialists from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and Joy Manufacturing attempted to evaluate an engineering noise control on a Joy longwall stageloader. The team developed and executed a test plan to evaluate the noise attenuation of the engineering control in an underground coal-mining environment. An evaluation of the long-term noise effects and durability of the engineering control were also a focus of the research effort. Pre- and postcontrol measurements consisting of a combination of worker dosimetry and task observations, tape recordings, and sound level measurements were used to evaluate the engineering control. A description of the engineering noise control, pre- and post-control sound level measurements, and an evaluation of control success is presented. In the end, no evaluation was possible due to mining practices, miner task variations, and inconclusive data.

As part of a survey on the long range supply of gallium, a comprehensive review of the chemistry of commercial gallium extraction was undertaken Owing to its very small concentration in all commercial minerals, gallium can be produced economically only as a by-product of major extraction processes for other materials. The Manapouri Power Station, commisioned in 1969, is located in Fiordland National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the country’s largest hydro power scheme and can generate 700MW of electricity. The power station utilizes the hydraulic head of Lake Manapouri, using an underground power station and a 10 km-long tailrace tunnel was constructed by drill-and-blast to allow discharge to Doubtful Sound. Power generation fell short of expectations due to higher than expected friction in the tailrace system. To remedy this a second tailrace tunnel was constructed between June 1998and May 2002. It consisted of a 10 m diameter, 10 km long tunnel in predominately gneissic rock and was excavated using an Atlas Copco Robbins TBM. High water inflows, Owner/Contractor production incentives and a major claim settlement were handled during the 5 1/4 year project. This paper discusses TBM advance rates, utilization factors that increased in the second half of the project plus an innovative method for sealing Tunnel 1 to construct the bifurcation.

Unlike many other heavy metals, gold can be profitably mined in small operations because of the prices. One mining technique that seems ideally suited for small deposits of gold and for certain large, lowgrade oxidized disseminated deposits is solution mining. Solution mining generally requires lower capital investment and operating costs than conventional mining and milling and is safer and less degrading to the environment. Although gold has long been recovered by cyanide leaching following conventional milling, solution mining as discussed here gained momentum only in the past two decades, during which time alternative lixiviants instead of cyanide have been researched. Chamberlain and Pojar (1981) classified solution mining systems used today as three types, namely heap, dump, and in-situ leaching.

Los Pelambres, 200 km north of Santiago, Chile, is the latest in a series of mega-projects developed in this part of the world. While most of its predecessors are spread over open desert, the Los Pelambres mine is nestled inside a narrow alpine valley high in the Andean Mountains. To handle the daunting task of transporting the mined copper ore more than 12 km and 1,400 vertical meters downhill to the concentrator plant, a gigantic belt conveyor system (capacity of 8700 mtph, 1800 mm wide ST 7800 steel cord belt, 2.5m diameter pulleys, an elaborate braking system including a mechanical failsafe and large reducers with a total installed drive power of 25,000 kW) has been employed. Many of these components have pushed the limits of conventional belt conveyor design.

The extraction behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of bromine as an oxidant has been studied. The effect of concentration of ammonia, bromine, and pH of the solution on the rate of dissolution of gold was investigated. The dissolution behavior has been analyzed using electrochemical method, and its results were compared with direct leaching tests using gold powder. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solution containing bromine was found be affected significantly by pH of the solution and the concentration of bromine. The control of high temperature processes requires the ability to measure significant variables during operations. With increasing automatic computerized control there is need for sensors which can provide on-line chemical analyses of all phases present in a reactor without the necessity to withdraw samples from the high temperature reaction zone. Probes using electrochemical cells and conductivity measuring devices have provided the answers to some of these problems, notably the measurement of oxygen in liquid metals, and similar potential systems based on the same fundamental principles for the analysis of non-metallic and metallic elements appear feasible. In this discussion, the state-of-the-art in chemical sensors will be discussed in terms of the potential materials of construction, and, in some cases, the limitations of upper temperature at which some promising systems can, at present, be applied. It is concluded that a new phase of basic research could improve the outlook substantially by providing solutions for some problems in chemical sensors which are now well-defined.

This study deals with carrier flotation of cerium dioxide, a surrogate of plutonium oxide, which is the major contaminant at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using carrier flotation for remediation of the site. In this study, a - 200-mesh fraction of pure cerium dioxide was used. Oleic acid was used as the collector, while calcium carbonate was used as the carrier. Mechanical-cell tests were conducted to float the surrogate from a mixture containing uncontaminated NTS soil, both in the absence and presence of the carrier. It was found that the addition of the carrier drastically enhanced the flotation recovery of cerium dioxide. The flotation recovery of the surrogate increased from 34% to 65% by adding only 0.5% calcium carbonate (-150 mesh). The recovery further increased to 95% by adding 10% calcium carbonate. The flotation method utilizing a carrier of calcium carbonate seems to have a high potential for the remediation of the soil contaminated with radionuclides at the NTS.

This paper presents an apparatus and procedures to implement a methodology for controlling ambient air quality in a confined working environment, such as an underground mine, an underground storage area, or a tunnel. The air quality control methodology is directed at limiting the quantities of exhaust pollutants emitted by diesel-powered vehicles into the confined space by identifying vehicles that are excessive polluters. The methodology is based on tailpipe and ambient air measurements in the confined space, and the ambient air threshold limit values (TLVs) for the various diesel exhaust pollutants. The methodology consists of two computational methods; a deterioration criteria computational method to identify excessive polluting vehicles, and an engine performance computational method to determine engine performance and to provide information needed to diagnose engine faults. The methodology is designed for implementation in conjunction with a preventive maintenance program. The first part of the paper describes the mine air and tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus and techniques used to obtain data. This is followed by sections discussing the deterioration criteria and the engine performance computational methods. A section discussing some common engine emissions-related faults is also presented. Lastly, a proposed procedure to implement the methodology including a possible hierarchical structure for mine personnel involved to implement the procedures is presented.

Cyanidation processes for the extraction of gold or silver frequently involve the processing of sulfurcontaining solids that react with cyanide to form thiocyanate. The formation of thiocyanate is an undesired side reaction, and in many cases thiocyanate formation results in a prohibitively high cyanide consumption. With the increasing number of gold and silver mining projects that involve the processing of sulfide ores or concentrates or that utilize a biological sulfur oxidation process, more attention is being focused on minimizing thiocyanate formation and in treating solutions to eliminate toxicity associated with thiocyanate. Though not yet commercially applied, there are several processes available to recover cyanide from thiocyanate to reduce tailings toxicity and to allow the reuse of cyanide otherwise lost to thiocyanate formation. This paper presents an overview of processes available for recovering cyanide from thiocyanate along with estimated operating costs for the processes. Pilot testing data suggests that in some cases cyanide can be recovered from thiocyanate for approximately the same cost as newly purchased cyanide.
