The DENVER Tube Press is a simple, high pressure (1500 PSI (100 bar» filtration unit, developed for processing difficult-to-dewater materials and to produce a handleable filter cake and clear filtrate product. Lab and pilot testwork conducted in Australia on coal fines (55-70\ -35 micron (400 mesh)) have shown that total moisture contents of less than 20\ are consistently achieved in the final cake products from the Tube Press. Currently, these coal super fines are sent to waste due to uneconomical mechanical dewatering methods, which were only able to reduce total moisture levels in excess of 30%. Calculated, throughput rates for the 500 Series Tube Press exceeded 1700 kg/hr (3750 lbs/hr). Feed solids concentration requirements are between 45 and 50\ to achieve these results.

INTRODUCTION Modern mine management is constantly striving to develop improved mining methods which will not only increase productivity, but will also provide a safer work environment and make the most efficient use of our natural resources. Progress can be seen in this area by tracing mining methods through history. Work that was originally done with hand tools progressed with the age of mechanization to conventional mining, matured to continuous and longwall mining, and the advent of short¬wall mining, a combination of continuous and longwall, has recently been seen. This new method of shortwall mining provides a promising method for safe and ex¬pedient coal extraction. This study focuses upon the planning, design de¬velopment, and operation of the first producing short¬wall unit in the US which was operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine is located in northern West Virginia at Grant Town in the heart of the high volatile Pittsburgh coal seam. Originally opened in 1901, the mine has be¬come one of the largest in the US, encompassing an area of approximately 103.6 sq km (40 sq miles). The seam being mined was the high volatile Pittsburgh seam which ranged in thickness from 1.8 to 2.96 m (6 to 91/2 ft). Three types of mining methods were employed: con¬tinuous mining, longwalling, and shortwalling, with each type accounting for 50%, 30%, and 20% of total pro¬duction, respectively. A total of 630 contract and super¬visory personnel were employed to produce the mine's designed annual tonnage of 1.8 Mt (2 million st). There were ten producing sections, eight continuous miners, one longwall, and one shortwall, operating a total of 22 unit shifts per day. Eight shafts, varying in depth from 80.2 to 194.2 m (263 to 637 ft) provided entrance to the Pittsburgh coal seam. These shafts were used for ventilation, portaling, coal hoisting, supply, and emergency escape hoisting. Ventilation was achieved by means of three exhaust fans which provided 707.9 m3/s (1.5 million cfm) of air to the mine and removed approximately 141 584 m3 (5 mil¬lion cu ft) of methane per 24 hr period. The room-and-pillar method was used for secondary recovery with designed barrier blocks between panels of 61 m (200 ft) in width. LITHOPROBE is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project that is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within 10 study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of the tectonic processes that lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic-reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping lithologic contacts as well as structural features and, in some cases, have been used for the direct detection of orebodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

In flotation or hydrometallurgical leaching of minerals, the cumulative metals recovery for a given process condition generally approaches a maximum value or an asymptote as the process time increases. This paper discusses the experimental methods of identifying and obtaining the asymptote of metals recovery through kinetic studies. In flotation, the kinetic asymptote of metal recovery, or ultimate recovery, is a function of grinding and collector dosage, but within a realistic variable range, is not a function of pH or temperature. However, variations in grinding, collector dosage, pH and temperature, all exert noticeable effects on flotation kinetics. Frothers generally have a minor affect on the asymptote, but have a major affect on flotation kinetics. The asymptote from batch flotation is found to be identical to that of a continuous flotation. In hydrometallurgical Leaching, the asymptote of metal recovery for a given leaching system is a function of such variables as temperature, particle size, and acid concentration.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.

The scale-dependent hydraulic properties in a fractured porphyry copper oxide deposit are investigated for relevance to In Situ Leach Mining (ISLM) design. In most well field designs, mine operators assume that hydraulic properties represent a continuous spatial function, or continuum. The problem, however, is that the representative elemental volume, the volume over which hydraulic properties are described as a continuum, is a domain (if it exists) that occurs between end members representing varying degrees of heterogeneity. At the Cyprus Casa Grande mine, transmissivity fluctuations are spatially correlated. This suggests that, at the scale of ISLM, the hydraulic process is heterogeneous, and a typical continuum representation is inappropriate for design. Alternatively, a conditional stochastic approach using the Simulated Annealing (SA) technique is deemed useful for the imaging of heterogeneous hydraulic properties. Specifically, SA preserves transmissivity extremes and spatial complexity, both necessary for accurate conditioning of a flow simulator. Also, the stochastic continuum approach provides an avenue whereby uncertainty (or risk) may be addressed. Currently, the SA weaknesses are that it is computationally time consuming and that uncertainty may increase when simulating under conditions of statistical isotropy. Recognizing that ISLM exerts a dynamic influence on hydraulic properties with time, the mine design should be re-evaluated at intervals throughout the evolution of the leaching process.

The usual method employed to determine the direction of flow in a connecting airway in advance is to conduct a survey between the two existing nodes being connected by means of the new airway. It is then assumed that airflow will take place from the node with higher pressure to the node with lower pressure. The purpose of this paper is to examine this direction-of-flow problem --using properties of the system characteristic curve for a two-terminal network --and specify some conditions that ensure that flow will take from the higher-pressure node to the lower-pressure node. It is concluded that the only requirement is that all characteristic curves of fans in the network should be strictly decreasing. Five numerical examples illustrate some important properties of the direction-of-flow problem.

INTRODUCTION The basic purpose of this paper is to suggest procedures and practices to insure that no employee working in a uranium milling operation receives exposure to radioactive, toxic, or other materials or agents that might produce a permanent, deleterious effect upon his physical health and well-being. This program is also designed to insure that each employee can carry out his assigned duties without risk to his health or to that of his fellow workers. The assumptions underlying this program are by necessity, conservative, with emphasis being placed upon prevention rather than correction or reaction to an undesirable situation. The limits specified-either as Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), Maximum Permissible Concentrations (MPCs), or Radiation Protection Guides (RPGs)--represent both standards of best practice and those of law and regulation. The total program is envisioned as a balanced combination of occupational hygiene and radiation monitoring. This includes surveying, air sampling, personnel dosimetry, bioassay, medical surveillance, epidemiology, and training--all backed by a thoroughly tested and evaluated set of emergency procedures. The program, as presented, is keyed to the results of monitoring, surveying, air sampling, medical surveillance, and epidemiology--it being obvious that no problem can result when no hazard can be identified. The lack of an identified hazard, however, does not negate the need for such a program and prudence suggests the need for routine surveillance programs in the best-designed facility. [The Model Mill] The model mill used in this paper is that presented by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in its study of the uranium fuel cycle1. The model mill processes 600,000 metric tons of ore per year into 1,140 metric tons of U308 as yellowcake per year using an acid leach process. Other characteristics of the mill such as location, tailings dam design, number of light water reactors supported, and geographical location are not pertinent to this paper. The usual remote western location of these facilities produce some difficulties in delivering the required occupational medical services and is not within the scope of this paper. The operating lifetime of most mills is commonly estimated as from 12 to 15 years in actual practice; however, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated a 20-year lifetime for its model. The principal steps in the acid leach process include :2 (a) Ore is blended and crushed to pass through a 2.5 cm (one inch) screen. The crushed ore is then wet ground in a rod or ball mill and is transferred as a slurry to leaching tanks. (b) The ore is contacted with sulfuric acid solution and an oxidizing reagent to leach uranium from the ore. The product liquor is pumped to the solvent-extraction circuit while the washed residues (tailings) are sent to the tailings pond or pile. (c) Solvent extraction is used to purify and concentrate the uranium. (d) The uranium is precipitated with ammonia and transferred as a slurry. (e) Thickening and centrifuging are used to separate the uranium concentrate from residual liquids. (f) The concentrate is calcined and pulverized. (g) The concentrate or yellowcake is packaged in 208 liter drums for shipment. This process is illustrated in Figure 1.3

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months. The development of the theory of reliability creates more and more possibilities of its application in different domains of technics. The methods evolved to date, both theoretical analysis of the engineering systems and investigations techniques in practice can be put in use a d translated from one science to another one [1,3,7J . It needs to consider the specific of the different sciences. But it is necessary to take account of the specific characteristic of each line of science. The reliability investigations needs, justified in technical and economical viewpoint appear too in mine ventilation technics and systems. The mine ventilation system is a complex of workings and ventilation plants, which serve to supply the networks with a sufficient quantity of fresh air from the atmosphere and then carry off the vitiated air. The condition necessary for a ventilation system to perform definite task is the correctness of all its elements, that is a capability to preserve in a expected range of tolerance, the values of basic parameters. The element of a system which ceases to work correctly is called failed. The basic parameter of all elements of a ventilation system is the characteristic curve, pressure loss - air quantity relation ?p = f(Q) (1) This curve concerning the workings and ventilation stoppings is given by the formula: ?p = R Q2 (2) thus the resistance R (of the workings or stoppings) may be taken as a characteristic parameter. The course of this characteristic f(Q) will be given in a complex form in concern with fans, ejectors, air curtains. The failure of a ventilation plant or working is therefore an event, relying on a change of its characteristic, thus for a definite time the losses of the plant&apos;s or working&apos;s capability set in for the fulfilment of its function in the ventilation system. The failures are divided in viewpoint of their nature on sudden and progressive. We are in concern with the sudden failures which are characterised by a violent change of the ventilation element parameter for example a fall of roof, or silt up of the working, opening or failure of the ventilation stopping, the stand-off of the fan or ejector etc. We distinguish two kinds of failures on the viewpoint of their action on the air flow: the "opening" failure and "closure" failure. The prevalence of factors, which causes the failures is in connection with the intersection in the mine of roads of haulage, roads of underground transport of materials and lining elements, roads of people motion with airways, as also depends on the rock pressure reaction on the workings lining and plants placed there. Other factors will yet be decisive upon supply decay of fans, ejectors and curtains. The appearance of failure of the ventilation element is therefore of random nature and determines the change of the element, when it is passing from operating state to unoperate. Qualifying the ventilation system element to one of these states is easy, when the characteristic change is clear and occurs suddenly, that was assumed. The investigations conducted by Patrushev and Karnaukh [91 in concern with the ventilation stoppings resistance change in the case of their opening, had shown the possibility of resistance value change in the range of several hundreds higher.

Two-dimensional, finite-difference elastic modeling aids in planning an optimum seismic-acquisition scheme to define the extent of subsurface cavities resulting from in situ gasification. To understand the seismic effects of a cavity, two models are compared and contrasted. Model A consists of a low-velocity layer (LVL) in a half space; Model B contains a rectangular water-filled cavity in the LVL. Amplitude differences are the dominant effect on the surface records for each model. Cavity resonance and diffraction effects are more definitive in vertical seismic profiles (VSP&apos;s) and in a "snapshot" of the wave field. Interpretation and subtraction of corresponding records for both models shows the need for pre- and post-gasification seismic recording. Also VSP data are more informative than surface records.

The Elliot Lake Centre was established in 1965 as an independent Centre for Continuing Education offering a variety of adult education services. In 1976 all retraining and community college type activities were transferred to the Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology which had opened a branch campus in Elliot Lake. Upon the completion of this transfer, the Elliot Lake Centre was then contracted in 1977 by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to study the feasibility of establishing a research and information institute dealing with various health and safety concerns of the uranium worker. By late 1980, a federal charter was granted for the establishment of the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety, made possible through the cooperative efforts of the Governments of Canada and Ontario, the Ontario uranium mining and refining companies, and the Elliot Lake Centre. On 1 April 1981 the Institute officially began operations. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION In May 1978 the Elliot Lake Centre initiated a voluntary sputum cytology program for uranium workers. This program was financed by the Ontario uranium mining companies: Agnew Lake Mines Limited near Sudbury; Madawaska Mines Limited in Bancroft, and Denison Mines Limited and Rio Algom Limited in Elliot Lake. In 1981 additional funding was granted by Eldorado Nuclear Limited for a small group of employees at the company&apos;s uranium refinery in Port Hope, Ontario. Initially in 1978, program participants were accepted according to length of employment, radiation exposure levels (calculated in working level months) and/or smoking history. These restrictions were abolished within a few months and all uranium workers were encouraged to participate. From 1978 to 1979 the sputum cytology program was medically directed by personnel from the Montreal Cancer Institute. Until 1979 all data maintenance for the program was performed manually, however the effort required to sustain the system increased significantly as the number of participants grew. In September 1979 the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, under the direction of Dr. F.G. Pearson, submitted a proposal to the Elliot Lake Centre to develop a data processing system to help coordinate the surveillance program. In October 1979, Dr. Pearson became the new Project Director. Director of the Cytology Program is Dr. D.W. Thompson of the University of Toronto who is responsible for all cytologic analyses. Developmental work to establish the new surveillance system was initiated in January 1980 and became fully operational at the beginning of March 1981. The following sections describe the Elliot Lake operations of the sputum cytology program now conducted by the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION As of 1 September 1981 the sputum cytology program has 518 participants enrolled. Eligibility is restricted only to a willingness to participate and the ability of an individual to produce adequate sputum samples. Each participant registers for the program at the Institute and is given personal instruction on methods of sputum collection. The majority of the participants in this program are employed by the uranium mining industry; some work for firms which are contracted by the larger companies. Many participants are either retired from the work force or receive disability pensions or workmen&apos;s compensation benefits. Other participants have been employed in the uranium mining industry and have since gone on to other employment; some work for various federal and provincial governmental agencies concerned with the mining industry. Some participants are referred to the program by their family physicians because of smoking histories and/or various respiratory conditions. A small number of these individuals have never been involved in the mining industry at all. A chart describing program participation by employment is found in Appendix 1. PROGRAM REGISTRATION In the Elliot Lake area, persons interested in registering in the program are required to go directly to the Sputum Cytology office located at the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. Each individual is interviewed personally by the Program Officer. For the employees of Agnew Lake Mines, Madawaska Mines and the Port Hope refinery of Eldorado Nuclear Limited, registration is possible during the Program Officer&apos;s semi-annual on-sitevisits. Participants are assigned, in chronological order, "program numbers" for easier identification. File labels are color-coded according to place of residence or, in some instances, place of employment. INTRODUCTION The former Shiprock uranium mill site is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the mill site are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The millsite was built on a 230 acre tract leased by Kerr-McGee Oil Industries Inc., and was operated from 1954 to 1963. The Vanadium Corporation of America and its successor, the Foote Mineral Company, operated the mill from 1963 to 1968. During its entire operation, 1.5 million tons of uranium ore was milled producing 3711 tons of U308 concentrate. The concentrate was sold to the former U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. During milling, the ore was crushed to less than 35 mesh and acid leached to remove the uranium. The [ ] uranium was removed from the leach solution by solvent extraction and the uranium-barren solution discharged into raffinate ponds for disposal by evaporation and seepage. The spent solids (tailings) were pulped with waste process fluids and water and discharged to form tailings piles. The piles (ponds or dams) were formed with earth starter dikes. The dike walls were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. Since only a small fraction (0.25 percent) of the ore was U308 by weight, most of the ore bulk ended up as wastes. The wastes contain nearly all of the uranium decay chain radionuclides present in the ore except uranium. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and wastes reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a Tribal enterprise. In order to provide skilled personnel to operate earth moving equipment, a heavy equipment operator&apos;s training school was also established on the mill site and was administered and operated by NECA. The U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) staff conducted radiation surveys at four inactive uranium millsites on the Navajo Reservation in April 1974. During the survey of the Shiprock millsite, it was noted that the training activities were degrading its radiological condition. Both the PHS and EPA staff recommended that the training activities be directed towards the decontamination of the millsite area and interim stabilization of the tailings piles. Preparation for the decontami-nation work commenced in April 1974. In order to facilitate the decontamination activities, the mill site and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas labeled A through F (Figure 2). Areas A, B, and C are defined as "perimeter" areas and contained surface contamination ranging from 5 to 30 cm deep. Area D defined the mill yard and contained contamination ranging from 0.6 to 5.5 m deep. Area E contained several raffinate ponds which were removed to line up the northwest boundary of the tailings pile and to move the contaminants away from the vicinity of the occupied on-site buildings. The contaminants in Area E ranged from 0.05 to 5.5 m in depth. Area F encompassed the ore storage yard. Contaminants in this area ranged from 0.18 to 1.2 m deep. Washes, however, had contamination exceeding 7.6 m deep.

Debate on an appropriate, acceptable method of regulating mine and mineral processing wastes has been ongoing since Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) on October 21. 1976. Final regulatory determination on which mineral processing wastes are excluded from the RCRA hazardous waste regulations under the Bevill amendment was made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 13, 1991. Regardless of whether a mining or mineral processing facility?s waste stream(s) lost or maintained its exclusion status under the Bevill amendment, that facility can expect more stringent regulation of affected waste streams. These more stringent regulations will be added to an already complex regulatory maze, which includes the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as well as state and municipal environmental regulations.

Short term laboratory cell electrorefining experiments were performed to examine the impact of electrolyte composition, current density and temperature on deposit structure, roughness, and adhesion to 2B mill finished 316L stainless steel. Copper electrodeposits were produced using synthetic electrolytes with thiourea and the continuous addition of glue. Deposit structures were evaluated using X-ray diffractometry. Surface roughness was measured using profilometry and analyzed using scaling analysis. Finally, an internally developed method was used to measure the force required to remove the electrodeposited copper from stainless steel to determine adhesion strength.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

Traditional or artisanal goldmining, also known as small scale goldmining, has a strong and probably a negative environmental impact. The processing methods applied are very frequently a source of severe pollution due to the emissions of mercury by the extraction of gold by means of amalgamation as well as the emissions of cyanide through cyanide leaching of gold bearing ores. The emissions find their way into the environment and contaminate soils, sediments, water and atmosphere. Abnormal concentrations of mercury and cyanides in waterways are known to occur year after year destroying irreplaceable regions of the world. Mercury and cyanide compounds are highly toxic and may directly create permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Existing methods for recycling of mercury and for decontamination of mercury and cyanide contaminated tailings are not customary applied in small scale mining and are ineffective as well. Based on investigations of traditional and small size goldmining, this paper presents: -processing methods of gold and discarded tailings under consideration of environmental protection; -figures on actual situation; -recommendations for equipment; -some decontamination methods for mercury and residual cyanide. Mineral Processing methods in traditional gold mining Gold is usually existing in its ores as the metal alloyed with metallic silver and perhaps copper. The element may occur in the form of: -native gold -inclusions also of microns or submicroscopic size metal sulfides (auriferous) such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, arsenopyrite and galena -combined as telluride or sulphotelluride. The separation process selected depends on whether the gold can be freed from its unfavorable associations (e.g. gangue) at a sufficiently coarse grain-size, or whether it is carried in a heavy sulfide which can be freed similarly. The usual practice is to concentrate the goldbearing mineral at a relatively coarse grain-size and to regrind the ore if necessary. The gold content is concentrated by secondary or tertiary gravital methods or is extracted by chemical methods (amalgamation, cyanidation etc.) Gold, even when of fine grain-size, settle readily due to its high specific gravity from pulps in which the main gangue mineral is quartz or silicates. Amalgamation is the process of separating gold and silver from their associated minerals by binding (entrapping) them into a mixture with mercury. The cyanide process is applied to separate gold or gold-bearing compounds by dissolution from the finely ground ore (CIP, CIL, RIP), or as heap leaching. The dissolved gold is separated from the solids and the metal-rich or pregnant solution is then treated to recover its gold. Gold is also recovered by flotation methods. This process is widely used in treating base metal ores and in separating various sulfide components of ores, as well as in removing the barren gangue. The gold usually associates with a specific product in a sequence of flotation operations and is recovered subsequently in the smelting of the sulfide concentrates and refining of the metallic products, or by cyanidation of the roasted concentrates. Froth-flotation can be applied to separate gold and sulfide minerals from a finely ground pulp. The Amalgamation Process Amalgamation is the main method for the recovery of gold in traditional mining and is applied for the extraction of gold from placers as well as primary ores. The mineral technology used depends on the nature of ore deposits. In winning gold from solid ore, the matrix of minerals and rocks must be crushed and ground to sufficient fineness to liberate the gold. The liberated gold could be treated similar as free gold from placers. Gold is mainly separated from the valueless gangue (barren rock) by utilizing the difference between the density of the impure native metal (density about 16-19) and the gangue (density about 2.5). In simple operations the material is carried by a stream of water down a sluice generally equipped with small transverse barriers (riffles) against which the gold collects. The riffled sluice is the principal device used by artisanal gold miners. Nowadays, spirals as well as centrifuges, such as Knelson separator or Falcon separator, are occasionally applied for gold recovery. Gold may also be recovered from the pulp, by passing it over corduroycovered tables that catch the heavier particles - a method maybe as ancient as gold mining itself. As shown in former publications there are problems in load sharing of backstops in multiple drives of conveyors. Therefore, detailed calculation methods and design recommendations are required. In this paper various designs of load sharing methods are described and a dynamic torque calculation method will be presented. With this method the loadsharing properties for low and high speed backstops are calculated and compared. These properties depend on the spring characteristic of the drive train between backstop and load. Furthermore, the properties depend on the method of torquearm support and shock absorber configuration. Remarkable differences for external and internal backstops are shown

INTRODUCTION The flotation process, in the real industrial complexes, is characterized by the existence of the significant number of the close reciprocal interrelationship between the input and output Darameters. Traditional complexity is appeared with regard to absence of the suitable a priori information for the physico-chemical characteristics of the flotation process. It’s led to needful of taking of consideration about the undefinition which have got the place in the real conditions and application of the statistical methods. The identification of the flotation process through statistical methods is conception of the more-stages procedure, including the collection and previous analysis, the choice of the model structure and valuation method, the estimation of the model un- known parameters and the results interpretation. The essential concept for the subject of this paper belongs to the empirical models ("black-box") and deals with optimizing in constant industrial plant process. The offered method envisages the application of process operation data in order to improve the work process or constant accomplishment of better results for the target function in relation to the former achievement. The optimum process solution isn&apos;t afixed value under the influence of various factors, but "a moving point" along the response surface and deviates from the scheme solutions. The evolutive planning method constantly "investigates and approaches" the optimum solution for the selected target function. As a matter of fact the expert operates the plant without interrupting the normal work process. The essential concept of method is to attain changes in the standard conditions, but so limited that they will not effect either production or the product. This method is based on statistical concepts and availability of following the risk of error. The possible influental factors for the flotation process (m=l, 2, 3) is following: the metal content in the feed ore; production level (t/h); grinding fineness in the flotation pulp; pH-values; the consumption of collectors and modifiers The possible target functions are: the recovery of plant capacity, metal recovery in the concentration process and concentration quality. The application of the evolutive operativity method in the chalcopyrite flotation- Bucim concentrator, combines the statistical data and the operator&apos;s experience in the interpretation and making a decision which adds up to the precise automatic performance of the process. The advantages of this method in relation to the existing procedure for the flotation process are the following: • The method is unexpensive and losses are reduced to the time necessary to collect the data and record them in the computer. This method provides a constant process control and a quality decision which is better than those brought by an ex- pert with great experience ("hit-and-miss method"). • The method also provides incidental data about the effects. • The method should not be considered as a procedure for solving an incidental problem ("crash program"). • The obtained results must be interpreted by an appropriate expert in order to be considered instructive. MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS Taking into consideration the complexity of the enrichment processes it&apos;s necessary the application of "black-box" and mathematical modelling. The presence of the indefinite elements compel us towards the both theory of the probability and mathematical statistics. The mathematical statistics by the mineral processing investigation of the valuable raw materials in the last years has had greater signifance and widely spread application. The application of the mathematical statistics methods for the technological pro- cess analysis and the construction of the mathematical models is bound up by the task putting of the automatic control system de- sign (Fisher R. A. 1941, 1949). The statistical analysis in the enrichment processes is applied formerly, especially in the sampling estimation. Contemporary, in the last years is imposed the tendency of mathematical statistics application for the obtaining of quantity characteristics and quantity valuation from the individual influental factors. Above mentioned tendency in the significant level is based by the mathematical statistics development as a mathematical discipline close connected with the technical cybernetics general joining to the investigated object as a "black-box". Another essential factor in the mathematical statistics development is appeared the created mathematical theory of experiments as a new, to some extent, autonomous statistical domain. The theory of experiments has demonstrated exclusively importance for the investigation of the complex more-factorial processes in the chemistry, mineral processing, metallurgy etc. The investigation by the enrichment processes of the valuable raw materials and their management is possible by the statistical method application. In the same time, it&apos;s possible to use the wide-spread traditional methods of the statistical analysis, such as the methods of the dispersion, correlation, regression etc. Also, it may be mentioned above all the methods of the statistical planning of the extreme experiments. The more perspective are representatived some cybernetic methods which are based by the probability as an approach in the process analysis, for example, the identify of the ways and forms, the graph application as an additional instrument in the correlation analysis, the dynamic programming etc. The mathematical statistics application in the laboratory investigation scale is connected above all by the experimented material analysis and the compact representation of the obtained results. The mathematical statistics methods are more varrying and may be applied in the investigations of the wide circle of problems
