Capital resource budgeting is the way managers of publicly held companies fulfill their fiduciary responsibility to maximize the wealth of stockholders. Managers maximize shareholder wealth by allocating investment capital to the most productive of competing alternative projects. Managers do this in a manner that maximizes the net present value of the firm's future cash flow. The techniques of cash flow analysis are the primary tools available for selecting a corporate portfolio of projects that meets or exceeds the rate of return expected by shareholders. The reliability of cash flow analysis hinges on the ability of managers to forecast the future values of individual components of cash flow. The accuracy and reliabil¬ity of forecasting determine the soundness of capital investment decisions and, ultimately, determine the value of the firm.

Large deposits of natural zeolites may provide cost-effective alternatives for treatment of soil and water contaminated ) with heavy metals and radionuclides. Research on the Bikini atoll demonstrated that addition of clinoptilolite to the soil significantly reduces cesium uptake by plants. Re- search on the potential use of zeolites in soils at Bunker Hill, ID indicated only minor benefits at very high contamination levels vs. US Bureau of Mines (USBM) work on the use of zeolites for treatment of mine waste waters emphasized problems with natural waters that previous studies have not addressed. High levels of competing calcium in natural waters significantly decrease the effectiveness of zeolites for heavy metal sorption and may limit the usefulness in these applications.

"With the depletion of easily minable coal seams, less favorable reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand. Due to several historical reasons, a large amount of remnant coal was left unrecovered. One such case history occurs with the remnant rectangular stripe coal pillars using partial extraction method at Guandi Coal Mine, Shanxi Province, China. The challenge that the coal mine is facing is that there is an ultra-close coal seam right under it, with an only 0.8 to 1.5 m sandstone dirt band in between the two. The simulation study was carried out to investigate the simultaneous recovery of upper remnant coal pillars while mining the ultra-close lower panel using longwall top coal caving (LTCC). The remnant coal pillar was induced to cave in as top coal in LTCC system. Physical modelling shows that the coal pillars are the abutments of the stress arch structure formed within the overburden strata. The stability of overhanging roof strata highly depends on the stability of the remnant coal pillars. The gob development (roof strata cave-in) is intermittent with the cave-in of these coal pillars and the sandstone dirt band. FLAC3D numerical modelling shows that the multiple seam interaction has a significant influence on mining-induced stress environment for mining of lower panel. The pattern of the stress evolution on the coal pillars with the advance of the lower working face was found. This demonstrates that the stress relief of a remnant coal pillar enhances the caveability of the pillars and sandstone dirt band below them.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the world’s coal-rich countries. Coal has played a significant role in the growth of China’s economy. Coal reserves have been mined commercially in China for over one hundred years. The demand for coal in China is still going to grow at a relatively high rate (BP Energy Outlook, 2019). Long-term large-scale and intensive coal mining activities have created tension between increased demand and limited resources (Bai et al., 2018). Easily minable coal seams such as sub-horizontal, tabular, and laterally extensive coal seams are being depleted, and therefore the remaining reserves are becoming less favorable. However, in many situations, the coal reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand for energy.Due to sedimentary environments and geological conditions, many coal seams are interspersed with sedimentary bands, or partings both within an individual seam and between seams. These bands and partings lead to appearance of ultra-close coal seams, as well as giving rise to considerable variation in their structural and mechanical properties (Ghabraie and Ren, 2016). Difficulties are encountered in the mining of such coal seams. If ultra-close coal seams are mined sequentially, that requires the design of a mining system for each individual coal seam; also, a large number of gateroads have to be excavated, which is not a high-efficiency option. If ultra-close coal seams are mined at a great mining height at once, for instance, using longwall top coal caving—a longwall mining method that is widely used in China for the mining of ultra-thick coal seams—then the location and characteristics of the band would have a significant influence on success of their extraction."

Installation of a computerized mine monitoring and control system in two planned construction phases began in 1983. Phase one consisted of providing a central monitoring station located on surface for monitoring underground CO detection in Frood Mine's heated area. The implementation of this project annualized labour savings of $200,000. The cost of installation of an early fire warning system was $100,000. There are several CO sensor monitoring carbon monoxide trends through mine heated areas. To obtain an early warning, it is not good enough to know that a fire has started, but it is also necessary to know where the fire is located.

Iron solubility's in spent pickling (HFHNO3 -H2O) solutions were determined as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations. A chemical analysis of the industrial pickling solutions and sludges was performed. The stable phases observed in the sludges are FeF3.3H2O and (FeCr)F3.3H20. Pure Fe metal, AISI 316 stainless steel and AISI 416 stainless steel were used in this study. The results show, that the solubility of Fe increased as the concentrations of HF increased in the pickling solution at a fixed concentration of HNO3. A reasonable agreement between the experimental solubility data and the theoretical calculated data was obtained. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the solid solubility product formed in the ternary solution containing pure Fe is mainly, at a high pH value, FeO(OH) compounds and, at a low pH value, Fe F3.3H2O compounds.

The Maybell Mill of, Trace Elements Corporation, Unit of Union Carbide Corporation is located approximately five miles northeast of Maybell, Colorado, and twenty-five miles northwest of Craig. It is located in the midst of the uranium ore deposits whose presence, made it possible. In November 1953 Russel Cutter, Chief Geologist for the original Trace Elements Corporation, picked up high readings on a scintillometer while flying over this area. Later, with George Morehouse, Chief Engineer for the original. Trace Elements Corporation, he started a search for surface indications. In this search, they found an out crop which can be regarded as the discovery lode on this property. The actual locating of claims and acquiring free lands and state lands was begun in March 1954. During 1955 enough drilling was done to indicate that a sufficient tonnage of ore existed to make possible a mill. These ore deposits are located in the Browns Park formation which is an unconsolidated sandstone with a few hard lime ribs running through it. The geologists tell us that this region was once a vast basin which became filled with wind blown sand and volcanic tuff, Later on, ground waters brought uranium into the basin which precipitated out in the sand. During the late summer and fall of 1955, a small pilot plant was operated under the supervision of John L. Chapman testing these Browns Park ores. During the operation of the pilot plant, three small open pits were developed and the ore from these pits shipped to Union Carbide Nuclear Company, Division of Union Carbide Corporation, at Rifle. To date all ore is being mined from open ptis. In the fall of 1956 the original Trace Elements group signed a contract with: the AEC for a mill at Maybell and on November 5, 1956, Union Carbide acquired the Trace Elements Corporation properties and contract. During the next two months, intensive research was carried out on the Browns Park ores by our research lab at Rifle. They also checked some of the metallurgical results which had been obtained through the operation of the pilot plant by the original Trace Elements group. During this period, a report on Trace Elements Corporation ores was also prepared by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation. This report contained data on representative samples of the ore tested for the original Trace Elements group. From this research and study a flow sheet was decided upon.

An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geology, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, what is metallic and what is nonmetallic? Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in this book. Another anomaly is that, by common consent, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products, such as cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively unwieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book.

INTRODUCTION Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.

Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

Iron, cobalt, and nickel in waste ferric chloride solutions were separated from each other by solvent extraction. The iron was extracted from the cobalt and nickel by the use of methyl isobutyl ketone, and then the cobalt was separated from the nickel by the use of a high-molecular-weight quaternary amine dissolved in a solvent of high aromatic content.

Mining of the Schefferville iron deposits began in 1954 on completion of the 574 km railway linking the mines and the St-Lawrence river port of Sept-Iles. Apart from crushing, no treatment of these ores was required before smelting. In the late 1950's, testwork began at Schefferville to develop a process for upgrading the extensive lower grade deposits containing 5l% iron with 15% silica (natural analysis). Engineering for 6.1 million tons per year Beneficiation Plant using cationic silica flotation and the A-C Grate kiln began in 1970 and the first pellets were produced in mid 1973. Production requirements and operating difficulties have restricted capacity to approximately 85% of design but ongoing improvements are being made continuously to attain design capacity.

The slag measurement systems in the cast house are very important. In the conventional method, the slag is granulated in a slag granulation system, and the slag flow rate is measured by the associated belt scale. However, in places where a slag granulation system is not available, the alternate approach is to deduce a theoretical calculation and develop the measurement because the commissioning of such slag granulation requires huge capital and has inherent geographical limitation. However, the theoretical approach suffers from several drifts and is far from the reality. In the present paper, we have innovatively engineered a sensor by designing the stellite-coated thermocouple that can measure the temperature of the slurry and placed it in such a way that the abrasive slag granules do not obstruct it, but we could measure the temperature of hot water, and further based on the thermodynamic approach, the slag flow rate is determined that can be compared with the theoretical approach. This approach of slag rate measurement is cost-effective and long-lasting.

This paper describes a process which finds the maximum worth of a mineral deposit. The procedure requires two phases. The first uses a microcomputer evaluation model to find the optimum design input, with minimum attention giving to actual mining constraints that might exist. The second phase runs the first-phase design parameters through a direct simulation model on a mainframe computer. In phase one, financial, economic, and geotechnical data are entered; and an idealized list of design parameters is output. The list includes optimum values for cutoff grade, mine life, mine size, paytons, paygrade, and payvalue. In addition, the model generates pro forma operating and cash flow statements and it indicates the maximum net present value (NPV) possible for the deposit along with the probability of that oc¬curring. The initial results imply perfect mining conditions. In phase two, when actual mining selectivity, sequence, and other practical design considerations are related in a direct simulation model to the optimum criteria found above, the maximum NPV invariably decreases. However, if it is still satisfactory (NPV greater than or equal to zero) then the maximum worth/ optimum design have probably been found in the first iteration. If, on the other hand, NPV is now unsatisfactory, then design compromises must be made and simulated, and the results rerun through the evaluation model. If several iterations fail to yield a positive NPV then the deposit is most likely unfeasible t for the forecast economic conditions used in phase one.

Thermal pretreatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The effect of pretreatment using conventional and dielectric heating followed by quenching on the fracture properties of a number single and multiphase brittle materials has been investigated. The reduction in the impact fracture energies and particle strengths with and without pretreatment has been measured in precise single-particle experiments using the Ultrafast Load Cell. Variations in the fragmentation pattern caused by different pretreatments were assessed by measurements of the progeny size distributions. The differences in the effect of thermal treatment on single and multiphase materials are discussed based on the experimental results.

A project's rates of return (RORs)1, be it the internal rates return (IRRs) or one of the many IRR surrogates, frequently needs to be approximated. The success and efficiency an ROR- approximation procedure depend on the quality the approximation-initiating parameters, such as bounds or seed values (guesses). The existing approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses suggested by intuition rather than supported by mathematical considerations. This paper presents three mathematically founded ROR-bounding and eleven ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability by using examples of typical project cash-flowpatterns (CFPs). The calculated bounds and guesses not only improve the approximation efficiency, but also allow the process of the ROR discovery to be automated, thereby making it more convenient and reliable.

"The picture of the baby surrounded by the number of (usually) pounds of a variety of mineral products a newborn will use in a lifetime has been widely distributed over the years, both on the web and as business cards that could be distributed to anyone. Figure 1 shows a typical example. I have included a slide of the mineral baby in various lectures over the years, particularly in my lecture “Industrial minerals: much used, little recognized.” The mineral baby with associated estimated lifetime mineral quantities is updated every year. I collected a set of past mineral baby pictures to examine the changes in the quantities of the various mineral products over the years.The mineral baby was introduced by the Minerals Information Institute (MII) in 1999 and became known as the “MII Baby.” SME took over MII in 2008 and continued publication as the “MII Baby” until the merger of MII with SME’s GEM program in 2011 to form SME’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC). MEC is now the publisher. Figure 2 is the 2016 version of the mineral baby. The repositioning of the picture of the baby from lying on its back to crawling reflects a major design change to help emphasize that SME’s MEC is now the mineral baby’s publisher.Data sourcesThe data used to prepare each year’s mineral baby comes from the National Mining Association, which collects the preliminary annual mineral commodity data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources. This preliminary data becomes available late in the first half of each year. The life expectancy data for each year comes from the Center for Disease Control’s “Data and Statistics by Topic” and the population data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Quick Facts” tab.The source mineral data is compiled using metric tonnes as the basic unit. The quantity of of each mineral is the apparent U.S. consumption each year."

"In this review, the sintering process is first described and analyzed to identify the key factors affecting the structure and quality of iron ore sinter. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nucleus stability and primary sinter melt volume and properties of the iron ore are considered to have significant influence on the sinter structure and quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of the chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics of the iron ore on these key factors, and the consequences for sinter quality.IntroductionSintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blastfurnace use. In modern blast furnaces, particularly in East Asia, iron ore sinter typically constitutes more than 70% of blast-furnace ferrous feed. High sinter quality and efficient sinter production are thus required both to withstand extreme operating conditions and maintain the productivity of modern blast furnaces. At the same time, due to the increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, iron ore producers are moving toward developing an increasing number of deposits of much smaller sizes to maintain current production levels. It is therefore imperative for iron ore producers to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of the iron ore fines they are producing while exploiting these smaller, complex deposits. The iron grade, gangue minerals present, overall mineralogy as well as physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from these different deposits vary considerably. Overall, ores now have highly complex mineralogy, are becoming more porous and friable, and contain increasing amounts of gangue minerals, which will have important implications for the sintering process and sinter quality.Blending is one of the most effective options being explored by iron ore producers to deal with multiple small complex deposits. This allows the iron ore producers to reduce the number of products and take full advantage of the unique characteristics of each individual deposit to achieve long-term product consistency while increasing production. Blending is also a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce from one single ore a high-performance sinter mixture with the required processing characteristics. A typical sinter mixture used in Japanese steel mills (Nakano and Okazaki, 2007; Matsumura et al., 2013) often contains five or more ores to achieve balanced sinter quality and productivity with relatively low cost of raw materials."
