Investment decisions in the mining industry are complicated by sector-specific uncertainties. This study presents a multi-submodule system dynamics model to capture the dynamic complexities of decision-making across mineral property development stages. The model includes five interconnected subsystems: valuation, production, growth strategy, demand, and finance. Developed through system decomposition, expert input, and literature, the model is tested on a hypothetical copper mine with 850 ktpa capacity and 1% cu grade. Simulated over five years with quarterly steps, it estimates an enterprise value of $78.9 million and a target growth rate of 11.2%. Results highlight the significant effects of operating costs, capital policies, and inflation on free cash flow, and the critical role of mineral reserves in sustaining growth. This model supports strategic investment analysis across different minerals and development phases, offering mining investors a robust tool for optimizing decisions.

"Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. INTRODUCTION It has been seven years since rare earth elements became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomised in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al, 2016c; Mancheri, 2015). The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries, such as the United States that was and is still totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

This paper reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems in use and development are investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, multiple- unit continuous haulage, extensible and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine being developed by the US Bureau of Mines. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.

"This paper provides an overview of the current use of auxiliary ventilation product and the challenges with limited air quantity in dead-end entry or working face. The PVC low frictional factor, low physical constraint and minimum leakage ventilation duct was development with ""made in US and used in US"". The PVC duct development covering operational and total cost of ownership with on-going success will be presented. This paper will discuss mine sites using new PVC vent duct underground and the results from operational and technical side making a difference. INTRODUCTION The Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestone’s, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the underhand cut and fill mining methods [3].Mining Method; Underhand cut and fill : The mine uses underhand cut and fill method which has 12’x12’ top cuts and several different size undercuts. The ore body is accessed off of a secondary development heading, utilizing a heading with a cross section of 14W x 14H or 15W x 16H configuration. In the wider and more massive zones, two headings in a production panel may be worked at any one time. Drift round lengths are determined by the type of drilling machine being used. An example of a typical topcut and associated undercut layout is shown in Figure 2. SECONDARY / AUXILIARY VENTILATION IN UNUNDERGROUND METAL MINES The auxiliary ventilation system provides the required air volumes at the face of dead-end developments and production workings, which in many cases may be considered as the primary method of assuring that the air quantity and quality standards in these working areas are satisfied. The Auxiliary fans and ducting systems are usually the primary means of delivering the required air volumes to the face of dead-end developments and production workings. Both centrifugal and axial-flow fans are used in underground auxiliary ventilation systems, usually electric powered. The internally direct driven axial-flow fans tend to be more popular because of their compactness and adaptability to staging. The most commonly used materials for ridged tubing are coated steel, alloyed steel, fiberglass and resin. Flexible (collapsible) ventilation tubing is also used and is usually made from neoprene-coated or nylon material. To add stiffness and reduce collapsibility these fabric ducts can be formed over a steel spring frame. A very important factor in the design of an auxiliary ventilation system is to minimize leakage and reduce the frictional pressure losses along the auxiliary ducting systems by minimizing their friction factors (K)."

"The Toyama Line is under construction as a natural gas pipeline with a length of 102 km from Itoigawa City to Toyama City. A 2 km-long tunnel section of the pipeline that we are reporting here is being excavated in a mountain area away from an urban area. The geology under which the tunnel is constructed is collapsible fractured breccia slate and Holocene sandy soil. Other tunnels of the Hokuriku Expressway and Hokuriku Shinkansen are in service above the tunnel route. From the starting shaft on Toyama side, conventional tunneling was adopted to facilitate excavating the base rock layer and maintain enough distance from the Hokuriku Expressway tunnel. From the starting shaft on the Itoigawa side, TBM tunneling was adopted to cope with the unconsolidated soft ground for a 200 m-long section from the shaft. We will discuss the issues and countermeasures concerning the selection of a tunnel route and excavation methods, performance of both conventional and TBM tunneling, and underground connecting of these tunnels excavated by conventional (NATM) and TBM methods under a high groundwater pressure up to 1.2 MPa. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The International Petroleum Exploration Teiseki Co., Ltd. (INPEX) is constructing a high-pressure main pipeline network in the Toyama Prefecture area to promote the use and reliable supply of natural gas as shown in Figure 1. As part of the Toyama line project that has a total length of 102 km, A-1 construction, the nearest section to the tunneling starting point in Itoigawa City, where various tunnel excavation methods have been adopted to install the high-pressure pipeline 20 inches in diameter, a 2 km tunnel in the A-1 construction section discussed here is to be excavated by conventional and TBM methods in a mountain area. Based on environmental studies such as traffic jams due to frequent traffic of heavy vehicles disposing of soil, and the effects of dust, noise and vibration during construction, we selected the route to install the gas pipeline in a mountain area as shown in Figure 2, where the impact on the surrounding environment could be minimized."

In the last two decades, acid iron ore pellets have established their predominant position as the iron-bearing burden material for blast furnace ironmaking in North America. It is a general practice that pelletization plants are asked to produce pellets of certain chemical composition and in a narrow range of sizes. A minimum amount of fines created during handling and transportation is desirable. Such a requirement is often expressed indirectly by the minimum compression load causing a pellet to break. The behavior of pellets inside a blast furnace, of course, is very important for a smooth and efficient operation. Before its melting in the lower part of a blast furnace during this period of several hours the behavior of pellets depends on their properties after induration as well as conditions inside each furnace. Among properties of indurated pellets, the ability to maintain their physical integrity in the burden and to be reducible are most important. To maintain the integrity of pellets (i.e., minimal low temperature breakdown, swelling and softening) so that there will be adequate overall permeability for certain wind rate and local permeability for gas/solid contact for reduction. A higher reducibility will moderate the adverse effects of swelling and softening and contribute to a smooth operation and efficient use of heat and reductants in a blast furnace. An article devoted to the relationships between the quality of iron ore pellets and blast furnace practice has been published elsewhere(1); therefore, no further discussion is needed here. The mechanism of strengthening of iron ore pellets during firing has been the subject of investigation of many authors(2). There is no doubt that the bridging of the growing hematite grains, particularly starting with magnetite concentrates, is very significant in the production of strong pellets. Recently, there are many reports from blast furnace operators that they have noticed the adverse effect of LTB in their plants. It is obvious that the strength derived from bridged hematite grains may disappear when hematite is converted to magnetite with thorough breakdown of grain structures. It is suggested that some other strengthening mechanism may be required in order to improve the LTB index of acid pellets. The influence of porosity on both compression strength and reducibility follows regular patterns. It has been suggested(1) that the amount of liquid slag in pellets during firing determines to a large extent the porosity, hence, indirectly, strength and reducibility.

Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines cooperated in a full-scale slope stability research project at the Kimbley Pit near Ely, Nevada. The west wall of the Kimbley Pit was mined from an over-all slope angle of 45° to an over-all slope angle of 57° and the pit was deepened nearly 50 feet. Mining was begun February 10, 1966, and completed October 30, 1966. Approximately 2.55 million tons of ore and waste were mined. The project was designed and carried out to learn more about the behavior of a pit wall as its slope angle is steepened and to obtain a possible insight into engineering parameters for use in design of future slopes. Data from this project are presented as obtained from (1) instruments installed in two adits for deformation and displacement measurements, (2) a subsidence network installed on the surface above the steepened wall, (3) pre- and post-mining observations of stress in rock, (4) sonic-velocity measurements, and (5) seismic and microseismic investigations. Changes occurred in measured quantities as the slope was steepened but stopped when mining was completed. Agreement was noted between the measured changes and predicted changes obtained from calculations using the finite element technique. Subsidence surveys and microseismic studies show the steepened pit wall to be stable.

The calculation of costs for an underground mine, as well as the planning of the equipment and materials to be used, is a complex and time-consuming process. The estimation depends on a multitude of parameters, and all mining processes are interconnected. A novel tool has been developed that enables automated calculation of underground mines and allows for the comparison of the effects of changing individual parameters. Previously, changing individual planning parameters often necessitated a complete recalculation of the mine. The newly developed calculation tool provides an innovative planning aid that allows for more efficient and accurate mine planning and cost estimation. The tool enables the user to implement continuously up-to-data costs and prices. This allows for more accurate planning data and results. The underlying concept of the calculation tool, its implementation at a planned quartz porphyry mine in Germany, and the verification of the tool at an existing underground mine will be presented.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. The varied benthic habitats of the Pacific Ocean are comprised of different types of seafloor geology. These geologic domains generally consist of sedimented abyssal hills, high relief features such as seamounts, and polymetallic nodule fields that vary in spatial extent and abundance. Nodules represent a deep ocean habitat type, and are of economic interest owing to their metals content. Multibeam data can be used to classify seafloor geology. The wide swath of hullmounted multibeam systems used in deep water provides efficient coverage of large areas of seafloor. Our research examines how multibeam backscatter and bathymetry data, with regional environmental parameter assessments and GIS analysis, can help identify probable polymetallic nodule fields in the deep remote ocean prior to groundtruth seafloor observations. A workflow for processing 30 kHz hull-mounted multibeam data within QPS Qimera and FMGT software was developed to facilitate multibeam processing, while also generating a terrain model and backscatter products. An additional GIS protocol for evaluating multibeam data products, including cluster analysis, was also developed. These methods were applied to a test case of publicly available multibeam data collected by the Ocean Exploration Trust and NOAA. Processed multibeam products were used to identify areas exhibiting coarse sediment backscatter characterization with low relief; filters for water depth at or below the regional CCD, seafloor age, and sedimentation rate were then applied. Sophisticated GIS cluster analysis further identified trends within the data to forecast where coarse sediment domains, potentially including nodule occurrences, exist. The test case multibeam data allow determination of the composition and variability of seafloor geology. This analysis can further identify where previously unexplored nodule fields may exist and edify estimates of nodule extent throughout the ocean. The research methods and outcomes contribute to marine spatial planning, ecosystems modelling, and mineral resource management initiatives.

A comparison of the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, based on pilot plant testing of waste pebble by Jacobs Engineering is presented. Estimated costs for constructing and operating a beneficiation plant utilizing dolomite flotation are given. Research to develop practical flotation processes for removing dolomite from low-grade phosphate rock has been a high priority for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The Institute funded the above pilot plant programs in 1998 and 2000. The Florida Phosphate industry currently deals with the increasing dolomite content of ore reserves by practicing selective mining. Heavy media separation plants installed at two mines to remove dolomite from pebble are not being operated. The flotation separation of dolomite from waste pebble requires that the flotation feed be ground. Grinding liberates the mineral species and produces particle sizes small enough to be floated. Only two dolomite flotation processes, the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, have been successfully demonstrated on flotation feed that has not been deslimed after grinding. Deslimed flotation feed, relative to undeslimed feed, has improved flotation performance and reduced reagent consumption. However, for the above mention processes, undeslimed ground feed increases the yield of concentrate because the phosphate desliming losses are avoided.

One way of increasing conveyor systems productivity is by monitoring the key parameters in the systems. In this paper, a new line of smart bearings will be presented and discussed. The new bearings are capable of monitoring temperature, vibrations, and belt speed for early detection of potentially serious problems. The new smart bearings have built in sensors that are carefully integrated and protected for long life service. These bearings are going to be the key to increasing the up time of belt conveyors in the future.

Each year hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system to improve safety during operation and maintenance at a concrete batch plant. INTRODUCTION Of the hundreds of machinery-related accidents occurring every year in the mining industry, incidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines continue to be amongst the most frequent [1]. A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study showed that the majority of fatal accidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines occurred at sand and gravel (38%) and stone (26%) operations. Of these accidents, entanglement in conveyor components were the most common cause of fatal accidents (48%) [2]. The same study stated that one-third of these accidents involved improper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures as a contributing factor. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) acknowledged this problem, stating in a recent request for information (RFI) [3]: “Since 2007, there have been 17 fatalities related to working near or around belt conveyors, of which 76 percent were related to miners becoming entangled in belt drives, belt rollers, and discharge points. Factors that contribute to entanglement hazards include inadequate or missing guards, inadequate or an insufficient number of crossovers in strategic locations, and/or inappropriate lock out/tag out procedures. Systems that can sense a miner's presence in hazardous locations; ensure that machine guards are properly secured in place; and/or ensure machines are properly locked out and tagged out during maintenance would reduce fatalities [3].” In response to this problem, NIOSH’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is exploring the potential application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide cost-effective intelligent machine monitoring systems for improved worker safety [4, 5]. SMRD partnered with Central Pre-mix CRH Company (Central Pre-mix) to develop and install a proof-of-concept wireless IoT solution to monitor machinery and conveyors during operation and maintenance. The primary goals of the system were to provide real-time monitoring of access points and facilitate the planning and execution of LOTO procedures

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Tailings are made of ground rock that is left over from removing valuable minerals. The tailings are usually fine particles that cause environmental issues for storage and disposal. Disposal of tailings is a growing concern, as more tailings are produced from the increasing demand for mined material (ITRC, 2008). This project proposes a way to convert the mine waste to a useful product. Tailings were selected from a South Carolina crushed stone quarry, the products of which are used for road beds, sidewalks, asphalt and driveways. These tailings were processed to generate synthetic aggregates for construction applications. The synthetic aggregate creates a product that could be used for many purposes, including aggregate for sidewalks, driveways, roads and building materials. Testing methods followed the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) guidelines for physical testing of coarse natural aggregate, which are sieve analysis, Los Angeles abrasion, absorption, specific gravity and soundness test. The synthetic aggregate produced passed all tests for NCDOT and, in some instances, rated better than a natural aggregate. Using the tailings from the crushed stone and mining industry would convert the waste into a valuable, marketable product.

Numerical modelling has been extensively used to estimate plastic displacement in faults and rock mass surrounding mine excavations. Particularly, for fault slip seismicity, modelled plastic displacement is usually utilized to estimate seismic potential, however these methods assume that all the displacement caused during an specific simulated excavation step, is released as a single event at each step. This representation corresponds to a conservative estimation since rock mass displacement does not occur as one single event but as an exponential distribution of many small displacements and a few large ones. When displacement is expressed as seismic magnitude, this exponential distribution is addressed as the Gutenberg Richter (GR) relationship. This paper present a method to decompose the results from numerical models into a distribution of seismic events The reconstruction of the GR relationship from modelling displacement permits not only a more realistic approximation of the expected maximum magnitudes but also provides a tool to develop a probabilistic estimation of the maximum possible magnitudes.

Mine gob has long been a safety concern in the coal industry due to the air flowing through the gob area. Therefore, knowledge of the airflow distribution and locations of hazard zones in longwall gob is important to prevent and control these hazards. Due to the inaccessibility of mine gob, many numerical studies have been performed to simulate gob air leakage using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs, but most of the studies isolated the gob from the mine ventilation network (MVN) with only predefined pressure boundary conditions. The MVN is, in fact, not static in a dynamic longwall mining process, and it consequently changes the boundary conditions and the gob flow field (GFF). Therefore, the MVN should be incorporated in the CFD model to prescribe the transient boundaries. However, it is very challenging to couple the 1D MVN and the 2D/3D GFF to make the mine ventilation simulation realistic. This research uses a proposed novel finite tube method (FTM) to couple the MVN and GFF. In the FTM, the GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes, each of which is formed by two adjacent streamlines. These tubes connect the MVN into a new coupling network. Based on the FTM, a model for gas migration in gob is established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion.

Hydrometallurgical production of zinc from concentrates is generally carried out by H2SO4 leaching. For the smooth operation of this process, some harmful components must be removed from the leach solution before the electrolysis stage; MgO is one of these compounds. Zinc concentrate samples from the Mount Isa mines were used in leaching tests. Leaching tests with an aqueous solution of H2SO4 and SO2 gas were carried out at various temperatures, pH levels and leaching durations. While duration and the pH value of the solution were effective parameters in H2SO4 leaching, temperature and pH were more effective in SO2 leaching for the removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3. Removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3 was generally achieved at low pH values. The results show that SO2 gas can be a good alternative to sulfuric acid in the leaching of MgCO3 and CaCO3

Oklahoma is the only; state in the nation that is currently producing iodine. The iodine is extracted from iodine-rich natural brines being pumped from deep wells drilled into Pennsylvanian sandstones in the Anadarko basin of northwestern Oklahoma. Woodward Iodine Corp., started in 1977, was the first plant in the United States built for iodine recovery since the 1930s. At present, three companies are operating four iodine-producing facilities in northwestern Oklahoma. The combined production of these facilities, 1,321,000 kg in 1997, is about 26% of the U.S. annual consumption. Iodine is present in concentrations ranging from less than 100 ppm (parts per million) to as much as 1,560 ppm in brines in various Paleozoic strata in the subsurface of northwestern Oklahoma; these concentrations are exceptionally high, and are well above those of any other known brines in the world. Strata with the highest iodine content in the area (Mississippian limestones) have low permeabilities, and thus would yield only small amounts of brine. On the other hand, the lower Morrow sandstones (Lower Pennsylvanian) have a relatively high permeability and are capable of yielding large quantities of brine that average 300-350 ppm iodine. The Morrow brine reservoir was deposited in shallow-water-marine and intertidal-shelf environments and now is buried 6,000-10,000 ft below the land surface. Production is localized to Morrow channel deposits confined to an Early Pennsylvanian paleovalley that is 1-2 mi wide, is about 70 mi long, and is referred to informally as the "Woodward trench." All three companies are producing iodine-rich brines from Morrow sandstones in three different parts of the Woodward paleovalley, and one of the companies also is extracting iodine from oil-field brines coming from several petroleum reservoirs near Dover, about 80 mi east of Woodward. The basic extraction method employed by Woodward Iodine Corp. was used in Louisiana and California operations in the late 1920s. This method is commonly called the air-stripping process. Lower Morrow brine containing dissolved sodium iodide is pumped to the plant through a series of pipelines, where by-product natural gas is separated and processed. The brine is then acidified and subsequently oxidized with chlorine to convert the iodide to iodine. The iodine is air stripped and reabsorbed with sulfur dioxide and water, converting it to hydriodic acid, or process liquor. The process liquor is then processed, using chlorine once again, to crystallize the iodine as a solid. This is then melted and frozen to form a solid product, which is packaged in 110-lb (50-kg) drums and shipped to end users throughout the world.
