Introduction The Relief Canyon gold deposit is about 24 km (15 miles) east of Lovelock at the south end of the Humboldt Range in northwestern Nevada. The deposit, is in the Relief-Antelope Springs mining district, which has historically produced silver, antimony, and mercury. There is, however, no mention in the literature of commercial gold production. Fluorite prospects at the gold deposit site have had no reported production. At Relief Canyon, the Late Triassic Grass Valley formation overlies and is in fault contact with the Late Triassic Natchez Pass formation. Epithermal disseminated gold mineralization is found within the various types of fault breccia between these two formations. Geology The Natchez Pass formation of Late Middle to Late Triassic age is composed of more than 300 m (985 ft) of massive gray to dark gray locally carbonaceous dolomitic limestone. Some minor beds of shale and siltstone up to 1 m (3 ft) thick are found in the project area. The limestone is locally silty or sandy. The color of this formation below the oxidation base ranges from gray to black and appears to be a function of carbon content. The Grass Valley formation of Late Triassic age is composed of more than 200 m (655 ft) of interbedded units of thinly parted argillite, hard gray to brown quartzite, siltstone, and shale. Within the oxidation zone, these units are olive gray. A few beds within this formation are slightly calcareous and a number of sections, especially those containing shale, are dolomitic. Below the oxidation zone, the quartzite beds are often slightly carbonaceous and the argillite, siltstone, and shale beds are often highly carbonaceous, giving them a black color. Two types of intrusive rocks have been recognized at the Relief Canyon deposit. Both appear to predate mineralization. Fine to moderately fine grained quartz monzonite dikes, up to 3 m (10 ft) thick, were encountered in several drill holes. In a number of intervals, these dikes have undergone either propylitic or argillic alteration. The age of these types of dikes is not known. It appears, however, that they are either Jurassic or Cretaceous. No gold mineralization has been found in this type of dike. Diabase dikes were also encountered in a number of drill holes. These dikes have almost always been propylitically altered. Although the exact age of the diabase dikes is not known, they are probably equivalent in age to the quartz monzonite dikes. Quaternary alluvium is found forming fans at the base of steep slopes and as recent fill in present day drainages. The alluvium is composed of either Natchez Pass limestone or Grass Valley quartzite and siltstone, depending on which unit served as the bedrock source. A significant portion of the Relief Canyon deposit is covered by Quaternary alluvium. Figure 1 shows a generalized geologic map of the Relief Canyon area. At the deposit's site, the Grass Valley formation appears to have been thrust over the Natchez Pass formation. The age of the thrust is probably correlatable with the Nevadan Orogeny, which gives it a Jurassic-Cretaceous age. The general strike of the thrust, referred to as the Relief Fault, is in a northwest direction. The strike of the bedding of both the Natchez Pass and Grass Valley formations roughly parallel the strike of the Relief Fault. The general dip of both the Natchez Pass and Grass Valley formations is in a southwest direction. The general dip of the Relief Fault, in the area of the Relief Canyon gold deposit, varies and has the appearance of a northeast-southeast striking anticline that plunges in a southwest direction. A small fold perpendicular to the plunge of this anticline forms a dome over the southerly portion of the Relief Canyon deposit. A number of northeast and northwest trending normal faults slightly offset the Relief Fault. Because of their small displacement, they are not shown on the generalized map. Gold Mineralization Gold mineralization occurs along the highly brecciated fault contact between the Natchez Pass and Grass Valley formations. Weak gold mineralization often occurs up to 2 m (6.5 ft) above the thrust in the Grass Valley formation. Most of the ore grade mineralization, however, is present below the Grass

Introduction With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive min¬ing costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man¬power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels, mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor) and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accu¬rate and detailed planning of predictable manpower require¬ments. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes. Mine Management Support System The Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is an integrated decision support system that was developed using Sun Microsystems hardware according to the contract be¬tween the US Bureau of Mines and West Virginia University. The software used in the development of MMSS included X¬ windows (Scheitler and Gettys, 1986) for the user interfaces, LASER (Raman, 1985; Hayhurst, 1990) for the expert sys¬tem and graphics components, and the C language for general programming requirements. Sun DOS was used to allow the use of IBM-compatible applications software on the Sun networks. Sun OS is the operating system. It can be viewed as an enhanced version of UNIX. One of the components of MMSS that was developed to address the many specific objectives outlined in Grayson et al. (1990) is the work scheduling system. MMSS accom¬plishes work scheduling by using a mathematical (goal) programming approach to minimize the amount of switching of workers from their regular jobs to perform other jobs (Grayson and Nutter, 1991). Manpower support program The main objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and manage¬ment preferences to predict required manhours for various support activities, for example, belt moves. This is accom¬plished by gathering and processing planning information the same way a mine planner would. The program is menu¬driven with the selection of a particular menu item locating the user in the appropriate area within the spreadsheet to review/add information. All of the interactions between productivity, section conditions and management prefer¬ences and their effect on the amount of support work required must be considered. Information regarding the productivity of a particular section, the geometry of the section, work standards for individual activities and section conditions must all be gath¬ered for input into the program. In the initial stages of development, it was decided that the program be developed in an environment that mine planners were familiar with in order to accommodate the use of the program. Lotus 1-2-3 or a compatible (Quattro Pro) met this environmental need. Other reasons included ease of calculation due to built-in functions, powerful command language and macro capabili¬ties. Each of the major components of the program defined are summarized. Production schedule This area allows the user to input a production schedule for the entire mine over 12 periods. Space has been provided for five sections, advance or retreat, and two longwall sections. There are several calculations occurring in this area that do not apply to the determination of manpower, but serve as an aid in production planning. Section description The section description area of the spreadsheet is shown in Table 1. The first three items are calculated in the production schedule area of the worksheet and then transferred to this location. The remaining information is input by the user to be used in later calculations.

INTRODUCTION The General Chemical Soda Ash Operation located near Green River, Wyoming produces about 4.5 Mt of trona per year. In July 1989, Mine Ventilation Services Inc. performed a ventilation survey of this complex trona mine which had thirteen active panels spread over 36 square kilometers. The ventilation survey and subsequent study showed that the intake shaft air velocities were at their practical limits (Wallace and Rogers, 1987). The need for additional intake capacity was immediate. The ventilation network modeling delineated the best location for this new intake shaft as it applied to the 5 year ventilation plan. Unfortunately, this location, 6.5 kilometers from the soda ash processing plant, would make heating this intake air very costly. Presently, the intake air is heated by heat exchangers which use waste heat from the plant. Air heating during the winter months is necessary for miner comfort and to prevent potential freezing of water lines in the mine. It was decided to examine the feasibility of heating the air geothermally by coursing it through an old production panel. This method of air heating has been used in this region with good results at the Stauffer Chemical Operation (now Rhone-Poulenc) (Moore, 1985). In 1990, a geothermal heating study examined four different production shaft/panel configurations and a workable design was found. The operators at the General Chemical Soda Ash Operations acted on this design and began raise boring a ventilation shaft in the Spring of 1991. This paper describes the ventilation system, briefly, and the geothermal heating studies performed. Findings of the 1990 geothermal studies are then compared to field data acquired in the Winter of 1992. THE VENTILATION SYSTEM The ventilation system at General Chemical had four shafts serving the mining horizon in July 1989; three of these shafts are located at the Northwest end of the mine. The active work areas had progressed to the South over the past years and supplying ventilation has become increasingly difficult. The 6.1 meter diameter #3 Production shaft and the men and materials compartment of the 6.1 meter diameter #2 Split Shaft had reached their air velocity limits. Conversely, the 4.6 meter diameter #5 Exhaust Shaft was under utilized. Ventilation studies showed the conversion of the 3.7 meter diameter #1 Exhaust Shaft to an intake would provide adequate intake capacity for two years. The next option to improve ventilation was the addition of an intake shaft at the southeast part of the mine at the intersection of H Mains South(H-M-S)and J Mains East(J-M-E) (See Figure 1). A service shaft has been planned for the extreme Southeast end in the late 1990's. Ventilation network analyses showed this interim intake shaft would have to be at least 2.5 meters in diameter to postpone the service shaft construction beyond 1995. The greater the size of the borehole, the further the construction could be postponed. In October 1991, General Chemical commissioned the 4.57 meter diameter #4 Ventilation Shaft near the junction of H-M-S and J-M-E as shown in Figure 1. The L95 panel would be used for air heating as described in the geothermal heating section to follow. GEOTHERMAL STUDIES Geothermal heating studies were performed by MVS Inc. in May 1990. Using a modified code of CLIMSIM, an underground mine climatic simulation model, several different shaft/panel configurations were examined to see which would provide adequate air heating during the winter months. CLIMSIM simulates heat flow into a single underground airway. The program was used to evaluate the heat flow to and from the airway surface and to calculate the resulting change in dry bulb temperature of the ventilating air. CLIMSIM uses inlet air conditions, airway characteristics, and rock thermal properties input by the user to predict the variation of psychrometric and thermodynamic parameters along an underground airway.

Introduction On June 20, 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published revised asbestos exposure standards for general industry and construction. The standards reflect OSHA's attempt to adequately control workplace exposures to minerals it considers carcinogenic - minerals capable of causing or contributing to cancer. These standards specifically identify asbestos as: chrysotile, an asbestiform serpentine mineral; and the amphibole minerals amosite, crocidolite, tremolite asbestos, actinolite asbestos, and anthophyllite asbestos. Each of these has a more common nonasbestos mineral analog that exists in nature in a crystalline, blocky shape rather than the hair-like or fibrous shape of asbestos. The mineralogical names for three of these nonasbestos minerals are unique: antigorite for chrysotile, cummingtonite-grunerite for amosite, and riebeckite for crocidolite. The other three nonasbestos analogs do not have unique mineralogical names. They are simply designated as actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite without the word asbestos following their names. The 1986 OSHA standards not only cover exposure to the six asbestos minerals, they also cover specifically the nonasbestos forms of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite (AT&A). The new standards regulate these minerals exactly like asbestos (OSHA, 1986). The construction aggregate industry views this as a major problem because these nonasbestos minerals are common amphibole rock-forming minerals in the earth's crust. They exist in small quantities over large areas of the United States (Kuryvial et al., 1974). These minerals, unlike asbestos, are not mined for a specific commercial purpose. They are unavoidable components in much of the aggregate used for construction throughout the US. They are also common in the gangue material of metallic ores. There are areas of the US where amphibole-bearing bed¬rock is common. Not every rock mass in these areas contain amphiboles, however. It does mean, though, that amphiboles are physically compatible with many of the rocks in those areas. And given the correct geochemical conditions, they will be present primarily in the nonasbestiform variety. In addition, these amphiboles will probably exist in the natural drainage system, sand and gravel deposits, stream sediments, lake shores, valley basins, or ordinary beach sand within these areas. There has been little quantification of nonasbestiform AT&A in dusts and soils in the US. This is not surprising since these nonasbestiform minerals are not commercially valuable. However, an example of the pervasive nature of these minerals can be found in a 1981 Geological Society of America publication where about 0.7% tremolite-actinolite was found in the desert dust in and around Tempe, AZ (Pewe, 1981). Since OSHA standards treat these common nonasbestos minerals as carcinogens in the same way as asbestos, large natural areas in the US are implicitly being labeled as hazardous by OSHA. When a substance is identified as a carcinogen, another OSHA standard comes into play, the Hazard Communication standard. There are also right-to-know laws in 9 states that essentially duplicate this federal standard. These standards require that a product containing 0.1% or more of an OSHA-designated carcinogen be labeled as such (OSHA, 1983). This means that much of the stone and sand gravel products occurring naturally and mined in the US could be labeled a carcinogen when, in fact, they are not. The National Stone Association (NSA) and the domestic construction and mining industries believe that OSHA has seriously erred. The NSA has studied the health, mineralogical, technical, economic, and legal basis for OSHA's action. These studies concluded that there is no justification for the agency regulating nonasbestos minerals as if they were asbestos. Health issues The preamble to OSHA's 1986 asbestos standard states that evidence for asbestos-like health effects from exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of AT&A is inconclusive (OSHA, 1986). The fact is, not only are the data inconclusive, they are nonexistent. During 1986-1987, NSA's occupational health and epidemiology consultant, Environmental Health Associates (EHA), reviewed all available health studies related to AT&A. EHA found evidence that malignancies in both experimental animals and humans are associated with the asbestos forms of these minerals. No experimental or epidemiological evidence was found that indicated such pathogenic effects occur from exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of these minerals. There are relatively few scientific studies of the health effects of exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of AT&A. A paradigm shift As market economists, mine managers are interested in "staying in business" and even "prospering." Bottom-line results are the "order of the day." Concern for bottom-line results can invoke questions such as how much was produced, at what cost, and was anyone injured? While these questions will always carry everyday emphasis at the mine, they are fundamentally lacking in that they often appear, especially to lower levels of management and to the production worker, as pre-eminent concerns. Driven by market economics, many organizations have decentralized, outsourced, downsized, restructured and formed new coalitions. Investments in new technology and a concentration on productivity have been an essential part of these changes, contributing to improvements in both safety and efficiency. A reason for (and, perhaps a result of) these improvements has been the development of a highly experienced and flexible work force. This situation presents an interesting opportunity to modify a few paradigms about work life in general, and perhaps a few paradigms about how we invest in the miner, in particular. Studying these issues now night offer some interesting opportunities for the Future, as the foundations for the next generation of mine workers are laid. With the average "experienced" U.S. miner five to fifteen years from retirement, perhaps a key determinant of future success in the world market might be how well we make the transition from today's work force to the work force of tomorrow. We can ill afford to wait a few more years to tap into the special knowledge residing within a veteran mining work Force. The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is one approach to defining, capturing and transferring this expertise. The WCPM suggests a paradigm shift, moving from a focus on products (quantity) to a focus on the process (quality). It also involves a slight change in the process -- a different way to think and work. Of great importance, it entails a belief and a commitment to people within the organization; a commitment to collect simple (but interesting) data; exploration for insightful ways to plot and integrate that data; and finally the search for creative methods to reinvest that knowledge back into the organization, that is, back into the work force. As a way of thinking, the WCPM subordinates information about how much is produced daily or how many were injured over a year's time to concern and detail for how the individual's and the work crew's performance contribute toward meeting organizational goals. Drawing upon the expertise within members of that work crew to address and solve operational problems is one approach for meeting organizational goals. This everyday focus on how we work is hypothesized by the WCPM to make the difference between a good section supervisor and the average one; an exemplar continuous-miner operator and the run-of-the-mill one; a mining crew that produces consistently high quantities, but, inadvertently, degrades the production of other units. The WCPM permits objective and reliable performance data to be collected. This data then can be used to define variability within tasks of work crew members; to relate observed variability to a cost consequence; and to more meaningfully analyze performance through the integration of traditional analytical tools, such as the production simulator, CONSIM, with a recommended behavioral approach, the WCPM. Basis for engineering test Most equipment selections and purchases involve a field trial test of the system. Technology is routinely bench tested at the manufacturer's facility, government agencies and the mine site. The WCPM suggests a similar, but more practical, method for testing the performance of a work system -a test for how technology is used (by people) at the work site. It implies learning from veteran mining personnel that have gone well "beyond the book." This approach to learning and to integrating training with everyday work life can help answer questions such as: What constitutes desirable perfor¬mance as, for examples, a shuttle-car operator, a miner operator or a bulldozer operator; what characterizes exem¬plary performance within the context of the work system, the technology and the work crew; how can investments in the worker he linked to measurable results within the organiza¬tion? This paper explores these questions and makes recom¬mendations for enhancing the cost-linkages between invest¬ments in people and the mine's monthly cost sheets.

Miners have long known that rock noise, or the popping and cracking of the rock commonly heard during mining, can indicate instability of the mine structure. For many years, miners have "listened" to the rock talk and many times have interpreted changes in rock noise activity to be a warning of failure and have retreated from the potential failure area. Microseismics, or the study of rock noises, was begun in the early 1940s partly because of this historical fact. Microseismics is based on using geophysical equipment to detect and analyze rock noises on audible and subaudible levels. Thus, these systems are much more sensitive than the human ear and "hear" even more of the rock "talk" than do miners. Research has shown that micro-seismics can be used to precisely locate portions of a working area that are generating rock noise, and that rock noise release rate information from each area can be used to analyze its stability. On the basis of research results, microseismic systems are now commercially available and have been purchased and installed in many mines around the world. Introduction When a rock mass is subjected to changing stress conditions, such as those caused by mining, small-scale adjustments occur within the rock that release seismic energy. When this energy is in the audible range it is called rock noise. Those areas where stress changes occur are also the areas of the structure most likely to fail. Individual rock noises can be detected and analyzed to determine their precise location relative to the mine structure. Over a period of time plots of this data provide a pictorial representation of where stress changes are occurring. This is because rock noise activity tends to concentrate in those structure areas most actively adjusting to the changing stresses. Since these areas are the most likely to fail, they can be pinpointed and mapped relative to the structure. Rock noise rates, or the number of rock noises occurring per unit of time, also tend to vary dramatically before failure. Thus, the ability to locate the source of individual rock noises provides a means of determining where failure may occur, and rate counting within each area offers a means of assessing when failure may occur. This information, properly treated, can be used to avoid, control, or warn of impending failure. Successful applications of this technique have provided recent impetus to the effort of developing microseismics into a practical, reliable, and economically feasible tool. The phenomenon of naturally occurring rock noise was discovered in 1938 by Obert and Duvall (1939) who were measuring seismic velocities in mine pillars. Seismic energy other than what they were generating continually registered on their recording equipment. Further study by these researchers showed that the extraneous seismic energy being recorded was from rock noises that were being generated within the rock in highly stressed areas. Pursuing this interesting phenomena both in the laboratory and in the field, Obert and Duvall documented the dramatic change in rock noise rate before failure (Obert, 1941). They also established the fact that, in many instances, rock burst failures could be predicted by monitoring and listening to the rock noise activity in rock-burst-prone areas (Obert and Duvall, 1945). These early efforts clearly showed that microseismics had great potential as a tool for measuring or estimating mine structure stability. Extended testing, however, showed that sometimes rock bursts occurred with no apparent microseismic warning, and that at other times sharp increases in microseismic data were not accompanied by failure. Also, because precise location of individual rock noises was not possible at that time, one never knew where the failure was going to occur, only that failure near the observation point was likely. Thus, while the technique clearly offered promise, it was not considered practical then. In the mid-1960s, the Bureau of Mines undertook a new research effort to improve the microseismic technique. Major improvements were judged possible mainly because new and vastly improved electronic and system components had become available as an offshoot of space program instrument development. Thus, in 1967, development of a multichannel, broad band, microseismic system began (Blake and Leighton, 1970). Application of this system in rock-burst-prone mines showed it worked well and provided the incentive to develop methods whereby the source location of individual rock noises could be easily and directly calculated (Leighton and Blake, 1970; Leighton and Duvall, 1972; Redfern and Munson, 1982). FirstMiss Gold Inc., formerly FRM Minerals, Inc., is heap leaching gold from difficult, low grade ores at the Getchell Gold Mine in Humboldt County, Nevada. A two-thousand ton per day facility is leaching material from waste dumps from old operations and from small, satellite deposits around the main orebody. A three-thousand ton per day pressure oxidation mill is under construction to treat sulphide gold ores in the main deposit. The Getchell gold deposit occurs in a wide fault zone in carbonaceous, calcareous sediments and intrusive rocks. Intense clay alteration is typical within the mineralized zones. Silicification is a less dominant alteration phase within the ore. Gold in the upper oxide portion of the deposit occurs both in a free state which is leachable and complexed in fine disseminated pyrite which is not leachable. Gold in the lower sulphide portion of the deposit is almost entirely complexed in pyrite. Abundant arsenic sulphides and variable amounts of remobilized carbon are associated with the gold mineralization throughout the deposit. The waste dump material being heap leached was derived from the upper portions of the gold deposit. The dumps contain high quantitites of fines, clays and sulphides of iron, arsenic and other trace elements. No stockpiling of low grade materials was attempted during the old mining operations, therefore, the dump material is highly variable and unpredictable. Coal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation's deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only after ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental compositon of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines. There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First, after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies. Further. assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location, a mining company could predict anew mine's respirable dust elemental composition in the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof, coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design. much time and money could be saved. Scope of work To investigate the variability of the chemical characteris tics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and midwestern United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee (1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs. The procedure that was used to produce the laboratory generated respirable dust was based on the Hardgrove grindability test since it reflects the pulverizing characteristics of coal. This test was chosen for several additional reasons. First, it is repeatable and reproducible. A consistent amount of input energy is used as well as a specified size range of feed material to be crushed (the channel samples). Second, it is thought to generate secondary dust in a way similar to that of the crushing and grinding of the coal and rock as they pass through the arc-shaped cutting path of the CM's cutter head. The potential effect on dust generation by this secondary grinding mechanism may be at least as much as that produced by primary fragmentation, which is dust produced by the cutting action of the bit against the coal or rock (Roepke. 1984). Finally, the Hardgrove grindability test is well known and is used in the coal industry to guide mineral processing engineers in estimating the capacity of mills used to grind coal. One hypothesis of dust researchers in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust is that the elemental as well as the physical characteristics of coal mine dust will make a difference in the incidence and severity of CWP. Coal mine dust is generated not only from coal, but also from any rock partings contained within the seam or any roof or floor material mined with the coal. Thus, coal mine dust may not have the same elemental characteristics as the coal being mined. Given that hypothesis, mixtures proportional to each thick¬ness mined of roof, coal, and floor rock derived from the channel samples of the face areas from which the respirable dusts were generated by the CMs were used to produce the feed material that was pulverized in the Hardgrove machine.

The possibilities of the use of ultrasonics in the extraction of gold and silver is the subject of a study initiated in our laboratory since the beginning of 1986. The study consisted of various aspects of extraction, the results of which are in· different stages of advancement. Reduction in leach time combined with higher recovery are the most striking effects so far. The ultrasonics machine, originally part of a small pilot plant, forms now part of a much larger unit. This has the remarkable effect of even higher recoveries and shorter leach times. These data suggested a study on the possibilities of reduction of thiourea consumption. Although promising, the results of these studies require check testing and will be published as soon as our findings have been confirmed. During the study, which consisted of the application in thiourea and cyanide leaching, some interesting side effects were observed. In the first place, a reduction in penetration time which might make coarse grinding feasible. Secondly, an increase in compaction of the filter cake which reduces pregnant liquor losses, especially with clayey ores and industrial waste products. These will be studied under contract in the near future.

The Changement mine in French Guyana has, since 1983, processed gold ore by classical gravity methods. A large part of the gold is in the form of very small, free or enclosed grains. Recovery by gravity methods is thus limited (25-30%) and the present plant produces about 40,000 t annually of auriferous waste assaying about 6 git. The company therefore decided to retreat the waste by heap cyanidation. After laboratory tests which showed the feasibility of the method, a pilot test was set up on site. An experimental 3000 t heap, composed of waste of 0-8 mm grain size, was laid out by bucket loader on an impermeable pad covered by PVC and geotextile cloth. The upper layer of the heap was reworked by mechanical shovel to break up the area that had been compacted by the passage of the loader so as to restore adequate permeability.

Luminex is a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits based on time-resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultra-violet light source. Developed by Scintrex Ltd., Luminex detects and resolves a group of key minerals - either ore minerals themselves or, more often, accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. These minerals are commonly found on the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits that are remotely detectable from the air. Tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold, and bedded lead-zinc deposits are included. Therefore, Luminex is a natural supplement to the three classical methods of airborne geophysics. The luminescence of minerals has been known and used qualitatively in mineral exploration for many years. But there are more than 500 minerals known to be at least sometimes luminescent. Luminescence of most is unpredictable and the colors they emit may vary from locale to locale. It is, perhaps, this apparent complexity of the field that has discouraged its proper scientific scale until now. There are two basic types of luminescent minerals - intrinsic and impurity activated. In the first type, luminescence is an inherent property of the mineral in its purest form. In the latter, luminescence is due to the introduction of foreign trace elements, often in very modest amounts (ppm), into the crystal lattice. These trace elements are known as activators. There are very few intrinsic luminescent minerals commonly found in nature. Chief among these are the calcium tungstatemolybdate family, more commonly known as the scheelite-powellite family, and the uranyl minerals such as autunite and saleeite. The vast majority of other known fluorescent minerals such as fluorite, hydrozincite, and many calcites, are impurity activated - that is, they will not fluoresce in purest form. In addition to the many minerals likely to luminesce at the earth's surface under ultraviolet excitation, any prospector who has ventured out at night with a mercury lamp will know that much organic matter luminesces - for example lichens and even scorpions. Just as the eye finds difficulty in resolving the luminescence of minerals from that of organic materials, it also has its limitations at sorting out minerals from one another by their luminescent colors. Figure 1 shows, in part, the photoluminescent emission spectra of scheelite, hydrozincite, and autunite. It is clear that there is a considerable similarity in spectrum between scheelite and hydrozincite and a great deal of overlap. In fact, a small amount of molybdenum in the scheelite lattice can almost bring these two spectra into coincidence. On the other hand, the autunite emission spectrum is clearly resolved from the other two. Basis of the Method The right-hand side of Fig. 1 shows the time waveforms of decay of the photoluminescence of the same three minerals. It is apparent that the lifetimes of photoluminescence of scheelite and hydrozincite are radically different and that these two minerals, therefore, may be readily resolved through their emission lifetime characteristics. It is in the realm of time-resolved measurements (lifetime characteristics) that Scintrex has made its major advance in the Luminex method. With the exception of some work by Exxon confined to uranyl minerals, to the best of our knowledge, no systematic scientific investigation has been carried out in the field of time-resolved mineral luminescence studies other than the work of Scintrex. Scintrex's findings are that all organic materials and most commonly activated luminescent minerals have lifetimes shorter than one microsecond. In addition, only a relatively small number of minerals - among them those called key minerals, or certain ore and pathfinder minerals - have lifetimes greater than one micro-second. Scintrex is able to characterize these minerals primarily by their emission lifetimes and secondarily by their emission spectral characteristics. By a combination of these factors a mineral index is arrived at. From that, photoluminescent minerals can be resolved from one another with a high degree of probability. At least two spectral channels and two time channels - of which one can be common - are required to apply this mineral index. Ground System A portable hand-held Luminex analyzer based on a modulated mercury lamp has been used to date in Canada, the US, and Australia. The current production model of this device is the LG-2. It has two spectral channels and two time channels for each spectral channel. Figure 2 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the Texas-Arizona zinc prospect in Arizona. The instrument was set so the channel read was hydrozincite-specific insofar as possible. The mineralization in this prospect is known to be hydrozincite and other zinc secondary minerals in limestone. Figure 3 shows a ground Luminex traverse over the AAA uranium prospect in Nevada. The instrument was set to optimize the uranyl response. For comparative purposes, broadband scintillation counter readings were made on the same stations (also shown in Fig. 3). It is apparent that both the Luminex and the scintillation counter results reflect a near-surface distribution of uranyl minerals. It is interesting that no visible uranyl secondary minerals

Papua New Guinea (PNG) stretches from the equator to Latitude 12° South and from Indonesia's Irian Jaya Province in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east (Figure 1). The population totals 3.5 million people who are mostly concentrated in highland valleys on the main island and around the coast. This paper outlines the history of mining, describes the natural, cultural and regulatory setting of mineral discoveries and highlights, by example, some of the more idiosyncratic environ-mental aspects of mining developments in PNG. It concludes with remarks on the progress made in the fifteen years since environmental matters entered the agenda for the establishment of a new mine in PNG.

The Lupin mine consists of a gold mining, milling, and refining complex located 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on the southwest shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. (Fig.1). The mine was commissioned in 1982 and is presently producing 6 t/a (193,000 oz per year) of gold from 612 kt (675,000 st) of ore. The success of this operation is due to such factors as the continuity and grade of the ore body, the competency of the host rock, low mining costs, efficient milling, the transportation of people and materials to and from the mine site, and the unique work schedule resulting in a stable workforce. Echo Bay Mines operated a silver mine at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, from 1965 to 1982. The company first obtained an option on the Lupin property from Inco in February 1979 and completed an underground exploration program in 1979-1980. Topographic relief is low and vegetation is sparse in the continental subarctic climatic zone, consisting mainly of moss and lichens. Temperature extremes are from 24°C to - 45°C (+75°F to -49°F) with an annual mean of -12°C (+54°F). Permafrost extends from near surface to 500 m (1640 ft) in the ore zone. Its remote location and harsh climate presented some challenging design and logistical problems. Construction began at the Lupin mine site in 1980. Before construction, a 1.5-km (5000-ft) gravel landing strip was prepared, suitable for landing a C 130 Hercules. The entire Lupin project took 20 months to build. All of the men and materials were transported to the site with some 1100 Hercules flights and several hundred Convair 640 flights. The Convairs transported construction crews, which numbered 400 at their peak, and also carried 3.2 kt (3535 st) of supplies during construction. The facilities were constructed and commissioned for a total cost of C$135 million. The operation was originally designed to throughput 860 t/d (950 stpd). Expansion in 1983, circuit refinements, and some capital projects brought the daily throughput to 1.7 kt/d (1850 stpd). The underground mine delivers 612 kt/a (675,000 stpy) of ore to the mill at an average head grade of 8.46 g/t (0.3 oz per st). The ore is nonrefractory and is processed in a conventional cyanide leach using the Merrill Crowe process. Gold recovery is about 95.0%. The average production cost is $US5.85/g ($US 182 per oz) based on 1987 figures. Mining at Lupin – Geology The Lupin deposit occurs in amphibolite grade iron formation overlain by mudstones (phyllites) and underlain by graywacke (quartzites). Contacts between the wallrock units and the iron formation are well defined. It has been folded and tilted into a megascopic antiform-synform-antiform structure (Fig. 2). Gold occurs primarily within the sulfide rich iron formation, with some minor occurrences in sulfide poor iron formation. The distinction between sulfide rich and sulfide poor iron formation is based on a visual cutoff of 5% total sulfide content. Mining widths are determined by an assay cutoff of 4.2 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold. There are few tons between 1.7 and 4.2 g/t (0.06 and 0.15 oz per st). The amphibolitic iron formation at the mine ranges from 1.5 to 20 m (5 to 65 ft) wide and has been followed over a strike length exceeding 1.7 km (5600 ft). The wider portions of the ore body tend to occur at its north extent and south nose. The gold-bearing iron formation appears on plan as a Z-shaped structure made up of three zones: the West, Center, and East. The West and Center zones dip steeply to the East (75° to 90°). Each of the ore zones plunge at an angle of about 65°. Total strike length of the three zones is more than 610 m (2000 ft). The zones are confirmed at a depth of 650 m (2130 ft) below surface. The Center zone is the widest and varies from 4.5 to 20 m (15 to 65 ft) while the West is the narrowest, averaging 1.5 m ( 5 ft). The footwall is comprised of quartzites that are strongly jointed and locally grades into phyllite, which comprises the hanging wall. The hanging wall and footwall are reversed in the West zone. Mineralogy of the ore at Lupin consists of amphibole minerals (hornblende, cummingtonite, and grunerite), feldspars, quartz, occasionally garnet, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, minor pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite. Also found in minor amounts are scheelite, apatite, epidote, calcite, tourmaline, and some arsenides (notable loellingite). Quartz

In 1981, North American Degerstrom Contracting began gold mining on the Little Rocky Mountain Range, near Zortman, MT. In the past four years, the price of gold has fluctuated from a high of $16/g ($500 per oz) to a low of $9.60/g ($300 per oz). With that kind of a moving target, profitability presents a management challenge. Based in Spokane, WA, Degerstrom employs 85 people at the mine. It is one of the largest heap leach operations in the nation. Last year, 8 Mt (9 million st) of low-grade ore was moved to the leach pads in a two-shift, five-day operation. The current pit being worked produces 218 kt/m (240,000 stpm) of leaching ore. Ore fragmentation critical The gold bearing ore has no defined patterns or seams. It is an igneous intrusion resulting from volcanic activity. It occurs spontaneously throughout the range. To recover the gold, areas are staked out and core samples are taken and analyzed. These data determine if the ore is rich enough to mine. Once mining begins, an average of 150 holes are drilled and blasted on a two-day rotation. Five Ingersoll-Rand T4s drill on a 4- x 4.5-m (14- x 15-ft) spacing to a 7.6-m (25-ft) depth. "When we first came to this site, we drilled on a 3.6- x 3.6-m (12- x 12-ft) pattern," said Paul Baker, superintendent for N.A. Degerstrom Contracting. "We did some experimenting using a high density emulsion in the bottom of the hole and filling the rest with regular Anfo." The high density emulsion saved the company on overall drilling and blasting costs since the holes could be spaced on a wider pattern and still achieve the high degree of fragmentation needed for leaching. Blasting is important because the gold lays in the natural strata of the rock. Also, the ore is not crushed before it goes to the leach pads. So complete fragmentation is critical. Terrain dictates loading/hauling system The shot ore is worked in 6 m (20 ft) benches by two Caterpillar 245 front shovels equipped with 3 m3 (4 cu yd) buckets, a 992C wheel loader with a 12.6-m3 (16.5-cu yd) bucket, and a 988E high lift fed by a D9H. A Caterpillar D10 tractor trap dozes to the loader. According to Baker, the 6 m (20 ft) bench is an efficient lift for the front shovel and the wheel loader. In tight quarters or in a pocket of ore, Degerstrom uses the 245s. For high production areas, the wheel loader is used. The hauling fleet includes 28 Cat 773 off highway trucks. The 45 t (50 st) trucks are seven pass loaded by the 245s with a 25-second cycle time per bucket load. The 992C loads the trucks in two passes in less than 30 seconds. The cycle time is four to five minutes for a 1.2-km (4000-ft) haul on grades that average 10%. Grades, in some places, exceed 16%. "We use the 773s because they have a low weight-to-horsepower ratio - that's what you need in steep country," Baker said. The trucks haul the shot ore to the leach pad. Currently, Degerstrom is working a pad that has a capacity for 5 Mt (5.5 million st) of ore. Building the leach pads The base of the pads resemble a large drainage basin. They take about one month to construct. A 0.3-m (1-ft) layer of impervious bentonite clay is hauled in and leveled by a Cat D9H tractor. A 30-mm (1.2-in.) PVC liner is then laid in place on top of the clay base. It, in turn, is covered with tailings from an old on-site mill. Degerstrom uses the tailings to protect the liner from tears when the ore is dumped. The ore is leveled and built up in 9 m (30 ft) lifts by the D9H. The tractor rips the top layer. Then, a network of plastic irrigation pipe is put in place to distribute a cyanide solution over the surface. The leaching solution percolates through the ore and dissolves the gold. The solution drains from the pads and is pumped to a 22.7-ML (6-million gal) pregnant solution holding pond. The liquid then goes through two separate filtration units. One unit removes entrained solids and the other side adds a zinc dust to precipitate the gold. This is collected on filters. The affluent then returns to a solution holding pond for redistribution through the pipeline network. Typically, 80% of the pad's potential recovery takes place in the first 30 days of leaching. The process stops when the ambient temperature falls below the cyanide's freezing level. And each pad has a leach cycle of four to five years before recovery values decline to a point where further leaching becomes uneconomical. At Zortman, it takes 9 t (10 st) of ore to produce 31 g (1 oz) of gold. It is therefore critical to keep total production costs down and efficiency high.

INTRODUCTION Practical experience in mines with known presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in Canada and elsewhere shows that a very high concentration builds up in an unventilated dead end heading. As Holaday et al1 observed, even a minimal air movement results in a drastic reduction in radon daughter concentration. It is therefore obvious that the main objective of radon daughter control in the working environment is to design the ventilation system providing an optimized flow of fresh air into the workplace, resulting in acceptable climatic conditions and achieving radon daughter concentrations resulting in exposures as low as reasonably achievable. BASIC OBJECTIVES Large mining companies, having extensive material resources and professional expertise, have utilized elaborate electrical modelling in the design of mine ventilation systems as early as 1950 (coal mining industry in Europe) and with the advance of computer modelling techniques, their utilization in ventilation systems design is on the increase. Unfortunately, these methods are usually not available to small mining companies and even the large companies might not achieve the fullest benefit from utilizing them, if proper limiting factors are not considered in the modelling. When an evaluation of a ventilation system of a mine is undertaken in literature, a measure of the amount of air supplied underground per one ton of ore mined is used as an indicator of the efficiency of the ventilation system. Yet, even the greatest amount of air forced into the mine might not result in an acceptable working environment if a proper distribution of this air into individual working places is not achieved. The volume and the age of the air are probably the two most important factors in achieving acceptable radon daughter concentrations in the workplace, but other factors also have to be considered. DIRECTOR MINE - ALCAN, NEWFOUNDLAND FLUORSPAR WORKS ST. LAWRENCE, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA Ventilation To illustrate the effects of the design of the ventilation system on the control of radon daughter concentration, let us review the gradual development of the ventilation system of this mine from the earlier years of its development up until its final years of operation. This mine, located near the community of St. Lawrence on the south coast of Burin Peninsula was developed in the late thirties and reached full production by 1942. Unfortunately as was customary at that time, the only source of ventilation was a natural draft. The mine was extremely wet, and no significant attention was initially given to possible health effects of dust. It was not until the mid-fifties, when a number of cases of silicosis had surfaced, that de Villiers and Windish2 observed a significant increase of lung cancer incidence among the miners in comparison to its incidence among the general population of Newfoundland. Suspicions regarding radiation as a cause of the lung cancer were expressed, but it was only in surveys taken in late 1959 and early 1960 that Windish3 and Little4 established the presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in very high concentrations. Windish, de Villiers and Hurley suggested that the most likely source of the radon in the mine was the mine water which dissolved radon during its passage through the granitic country rock in the surrounding geological area. This conclusion was confirmed by analyses of water from various areas of the mine by the Atomic Energy Canada Limited laboratories. The radon values in the samples varied from 4,240 to 12,850 pCi/L5. Following the discovery of the presence of radon daughters in the mine, the company took speedy action to install mechanical ventilation for the mine. The system was not designed as a total unit, but fans were installed rather on a trial and error basis. The basic system installation began in March 1960 and was completed by 1962. It remained basically unchanged with only minor modifications until August 1973 when a wholly new, redesigned ventilation system was implemented. A schematic section of the mine and its ventilation system for the period prior to March 1960 is given in Figure "A", for the period 1960-1973 in Figure "B", and for the period after August 1973 in Figure "C". The ventilation system prior to 1960 is not known. All workings of the mine were ventilated only by natural ventilation. If any measurements of airflows at different or any times of the year ever existed, no records have been preserved. The very minimal natural ventilation was augmented by "blowing" air from compressed air supply lines and exhaust air from drills. It is known that the compressor capacities of the mine were limited and therefore no significant air movement was probably created by the "blowing".

Since 1978, the Colorado Department of Health has become involved in specific investigations of possible radiation hazards among nonminers in Colorado communities. In each instance, the improper disposal of mill tailings has precipitated concerns and allegations of radiation hazards. This presentation is a brief summary of the findings, to date, of 4 such investigations involving tailings disposal problems in Canon City, Denver, Durango and Grand Junction, Colorado. Canon City In the summer of 1979, allegations of excessive cancer incidence were made at public hearings concerning an application for a Radioactive Materials License submitted to the Colorado Department of Health by the Cotter Corporation for a uranium mill at Canon City. Canon City is the site of a uranium mill operated since 1958 by Commonwealth Edison. Local residents accumulated figures and calculated rates suggesting a 2-fold excess in total cancer mortality. These rates were not adjusted or standardized for demographic varibles. A review of cancer mortality data and computation of age standardized rates for years 1950 through 1977 showed that Canon City's cancer mortality rates were within expected limits, actually lower than rates for the State of Colorado or the United States. The first slide shows rates for every fifth year, 1950 through 1975. Further, an analysis of Canon City cancer incidence data from the Colorado Central Cancer Registry revealed that 1979 incidence rates were not significantly different from Colorado rates, with the exception of prostate cancer. The next slide shows age standardized incidence rates for lung, colon, breast and prostate cancer. Data were also reviewed for leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma and cancers of the thyroid stomach, uterine certix, ovary, kidney, bladder-and brain, however, small numbers of cases prevented meaningful rate calculation. 1980 data are presently being analyzed. None of the data yet examined support allegations of radiation-associated cancer in Canon City. Denver In February of 1979, the Department of Health became aware of a number of radium mill tailing deposits in the Denver metropolitan area, remnants of the radium milling industry of the early 1900's. Several of the deposits were situated so as to possibly contribute significantly to radiation exposure of a small number of people over a period of several decades. The Department developed protocols for radiation surveys, dosage estimates and, for a small number of persons, body burdens determinations and peripheral blood lymphocyte cytogenetic studies. The results of this investigation suggested no measurable biomedical impact as a result of the radium deposits. Durango In October of 1979, a physician residing in Durango, Colorado released information from a preliminary analysis of lung cancer data suggesting an incidence rate several times expected in that city. The data were presented at a meeting of a citizen's group concerned about the possible health hazards of 2 uranium mill tailing deposits located in the south end of the city. Since cancer incidence data generally do not exist in most of western Colorado, a team of epidemiologists was dispatched to Durango to work with local physicians and hospitals in conducting an epidemiologic study of selected cancers for the period 1969 through 1978. After case-finding and record abstracting were completed, it was determined that sufficient data were available for study of only 3 sites: lung cancer, breast cancer and leukemia. The next slide shows age standardized incidence rates for these 3 sites for 1969-1978 for Durango and the State of Colorado. There are no significant differences in these rates. The data did show a geographic peculiarity with regards to the relative proportion of tumor types near the tailings deposits as opposed to away from the deposits, however, this finding is based upon very small numbers of cases and may represent only the random excursion of rates based upon small observations. This investigation suggests that if a carcinogenic hazard is present, it is too small to be detected by the study method employed. Grand Junction The Department of Health has been involved in the Grand Junction mill tailings problem for several years. In 1966, the Department issued an order terminating the practice of free public access to a 55-acre pile of uranium mill tailings. Prior to this order, an estimated 300,000 tons of material was removed. Of this amount, an estimated 50,000 tons was presumably used in residential and commercial construction. Despite many allegations of cancer and birth defects excesses in Grant Junction since the mid 1960s, the first epidemiologic study of cancer was conducted in the spring of 1977. Data from the Colorado Central Cancer Registry were analyzed and reported to the Executive Director of the Department of Health in June of that year. The findings of the first and preliminary study were an unexplained excess of acute leukemia and chronic myelocytic leukemia. The excess was based upon small numbers but was present across all age groups. No increase in chronic lymphocytic leukemia was evident.

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. Eminent Domain is the power of the government or municipality to take property for public use without the consent or acceptance of the owner. Typically the agency taking the property will make an offer on the property, hoping that the owner will immediately accept and allow work to begin. If a mutual resolution regarding the property value cannot be reached, however, the municipality will condemn the premises and institute a condemnation action in a court of law, which is when the problems begin. The power of the government to take the subject property is limited by the Federal and State constitutional duty to pay "just compensation" for the property.
