BP neural network is a multilayer feedforward network trained by error back-propagation algorithm, which is one of the most widely used neural network models. However, BP neural network has exposed more and more shortcomings and deficiencies with the expansion of the application scope. In the prediction of ore quantity, BP neural network has the characteristics of slow convergence and easy to fall into local minimum point. In order to obtain the global optimal solution, and to improve the defects of BP neural network, this paper proposes combination optimization algorithm of genetic algorithm (GA) and BP neural network to improve the speed and accuracy of forecasting the main design flow chart and the analysis of the sort distinguish algorithm are offered, and then some problem in the design and debugging of the algorithm are discussed. On this basis, the GA-BP neural network model is constructed and applied to optimize the initial weights and threshold value of BP neural network. This model choices the floating point coding method to encode the connection weights and thresholds, and divides subjects into several populations. Through the introduction of selection, mutation, crossover, initial weight and other operators, making operational synergies between the various groups. This study selects 30 geological units, 8 quantitative variables (Pb, Zn, Cu, Mo, Si, Ni, Co, V) and 12 qualitative variables to carry out empirical analysis. Then the simulation of the algorithm is carried out in MATLAB and the parameters are analysed. By normalizing the input samples, 22 groups of observation data are used as the training data for prediction, and the latter 8 groups of observation data are used as the test data to be verified. The results show that when the ore quantity characteristics are not very significant, the model will produce prediction bias. But the improvement of the algorithm increases the efficiency of the function approach capacity of BP neural network and conquer the BP neural network system’s instability. It provides an auxiliary guide for ore prediction, which have higher reference value.

This review summarizes three sets of ongoing studies which we are performing in collaboration with a number of researchers associated with the Dept. of Interior - Generic Mineral Technology Center for the Study of Respirable Dusts, concerning surfactant-particle interactions studied using this surrogate surfactant. These topics are: (A) the suppression of mineral particle cytotoxic potential by DPL adsorption and the persistence of this effect under conditions of enzymatic digestion; (B) surfactant suppression of organic particle cytotoxicity by DPL adsorption and the effect on subsequent expression of genotoxic potential; (C) potential effects of surfactant on heterogeneous structured complex respirable particles. The references list some of our reports which can provide additional information on these studies. Further, those reports provide references to the literature of the field and to the works of others on these topics. Deep lung airspaces, the pulmonary alveoli and respiratory bronchioles, are coated with a hypophase which is rich in surfactant biomolecules secreted by the alveolar type II epithelial cells. The surfactant is known to be critical to maintaining stable low surface tensions on the inner surfaces of the alveoli by forming a surfactant layer on the airliquid interface of the alveolar hypophase. Upon deposition in the acinar regions of the lung a respired particle's initial contact will be with this surfactant coating over pulmonary tissue. A primary component of this surfactant is the phospholipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, commonly called lecithin. A surface layer of dipalmitoly lecithin on saline will act much as full pulmonary surfactant in decreasing surface tension and producing a hysteresis in surface tension behavior with surface area. We have used dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL), a major component of that surfactant, dispersed in physiologic saline as a surrogate for studying interactions of both mineral and organic respirable particles with pulmonary surfactant and consequent effects on particle toxic behavior. A. DUST CYTOTOXICITY AND LECITHIN SURFACTANT ADSORPTION Respirable quartz and kaolin clay particles are found to be comparably cytotoxic in a number of in vitro bioassays including lavaged rat pulmonary macrophage release of cytosolic and lysosomal enzymes, and red blood cell hemolysis as a measure of dust membranolytic potential. These direct and prompt cytotoxic activities do not account for the distinctly greater potential for quartz to induce pulmonary disease. When respirable quartz and kaolin are incubated with a dispersion of DPL in saline at 37C it is found that the prompt cytotoxicity of both dusts is fully suppressed as measured in vitro by pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase, beta-N-

"In order to study the removal efficiency of Cu2+ from acid mine drainage by prepared bentonite-steel slag composite particles, adsorption experiment was carried out. The composite particles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction analysis technique (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results show that: the composite particles can release alkali to neutralize the acid of acid mine drainage; the adsorption and chemical precipitation of Cu2+ occurred in the whole reaction process; the removal amount of composite particles on Cu2+ was 9.88 mg/g when the reaction reached equilibrium; the FTIR spectra revealed the existence of surface complexation; the SEM micrographs suggested that the composite particles would continue to adsorb and coagulate Cu2+ after the composite particles surface adsorbing Cu2+ and forming precipitate, namely, there was synergistic reaction of adsorption and coagulation; the XRD patterns further showed the existence of cation exchange and revealed that the states of Cu2+ in the surface of the composite particles was Cu-Si-O mineral phase and CuO(Cu(OH)2) polymerization precipitation. The bentonite-steel slag composite particles which can play a role of adsorption-coagulation synergism are excellent multifunctional green environmental mineral materials to treat acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions.Introduction It is reported (Zuo and He 2013) that with the rapid development of industry, the world demand for mineral resources is increasing, while the problem of mine environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious due to the large amount of mining. The pollution of mine wastewater has become a global problem, in which acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most serious waste water. It is also reported (Cong and Zhao 2003) that acid mine drainage containing high concentrations of heavy metals and having low pH value, causing serious negative influence to the mining production and ecological environment. Acid mine drainage is one of the most serious environmental pollution to the mining industry. In recent years, it has been widely concerned by scholars at home and abroad."

Mining systems with greater than a 20-foot face advance (deep cut) have become popular due to their increased productivity and safety. The face dust collection system used in many of the mines employing the deep cut systems, incorporates a machine mounted dust collector with either a blowing or exhausting line brattice and a remote control operated continuous miner. In order to characterize and quantify the parameters used to control dust with these systems, the Dust Division conducted studies on four mining sections using continuous miners with deep cut mining systems. On each section, the dust control system incorporated line brattice with a machine mounted dust collector. The remote control made it possible for the continuous mining machine to advance further while permitting the operator to remain under supported roof and away from dust generated during mining. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the effectiveness of deep cut mining systems using dust collectors to control respirable dust exposure. This paper summarizes the results of the studies conducted. At each mine face workers were sampled to determine their full-shift dust exposure. Additionally, fixed point dust samples were collected at various locations to determine relative concentrations of dust generated from mining. Air quantities were measured at each working place to determine the amount of air delivered to the face area. Evaluations were made by comparing worker exposures to respirable dust samples taken at appropriate locations upstream and downstream of the coal faced being mined. An estimate of the amount of the respirable dust being generated at the face during mining and the amount of respirable dust being removed by the dust collectors was made by balancing the air quantities and the dust concentrations immediately upstream and downstream of the coal face. Results of the studies showed that the dust control systems, were effective for controlling workers exposure to respirable dust. Dust collector efficiencies were determined to be approximately 85 percent. While the dust collectors were effective in removing respirable dust, the success of the systems with line brattice greater than twenty feet from the face, was dependent on the use of the remote control which permitted the continuous miner operator to remain out of the high concentration dust cloud in the working face. Dilution from intake air, combined with the dust collector efficiency, maintained exposure of other section workers below applicable standards.

Mining haul trucks comprise the majority of the equipment used in underground limestone mining operations and are known to emit high levels of noise. A previous study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that 70-90 percent of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) great enough to be classified as a hearing disability by retirement age. These results demonstrate the public health need to protect the hearing of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. ng of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. Cab enclosures present an opportunity to isolate the haul truck operator from both truck and other noise in the mining environment. A total of twenty-five haul truck cabs were studied which were divided into three style (treatment) categories determined by soundproofing features and technology for noise reduction: old-, new-, and retrofitted-style. This study examines the contribution of cab acoustics, operator performance, and maintenance to noise reduction for each cab style. Dosimeters were used to measure 8-hr time weighted average sound pressure levels (TWA8 SPLs) inside and outside the cabs to determine if different acoustical treatments affect cab attenuation. Adherence to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 90 dB TWA8 (with a 90 dB threshold) was used as the main indicator of overall noise reduction achieved. Dosimetery results indicate only 2% of the samples exceeded the PEL, but samples could still be reduced much further. Descriptive and comparative statistics indicate that noise levels inside the new-style cabs are significantly lower than the other two cab styles. Also, data suggest that there is no difference in noise exposures when comparing the old-style to retrofitted cab styles. Operator influence (opening doors and windows) was a significant factor for increasing noise exposure. This paper demonstrates that properly designed cabs can achieve major noise reductions, but noise levels could still be reduced much further below the MSHA PEL. New-style cabs, equipped with modern noise-reduction treatments, exhibit much lower noise exposures than the other two cabs styles, and the effectiveness of the current noise-reduction treatments for retrofitted cabs is questionable. Haul truck driver observations indicate that improved noise exposure reduction training is needed. Finally, specific targets for future noise reduction research are suggested that will further contribute to the prevention of hearing loss for haul truck operators.

J.R. Atkinson, office engineer to Kennecott Copper Corp., summarized data on the Mineral Park area [Wallapai (Chloride) Mining District, Mohave County, Arizona, Fig. 1] and submitted it to the New York office in 1950. He recommended an examination. Weston Bourret, a Kennecott geologist, accompanied by B.S. Butler, the well known former US Geological Survey geologist, examined the larger of two hydrothermally altered areas in Mineral Park that same year. Bourret recommended that the property be optioned and mapped. Georges Ordonez, Kennecott's chief geologist, after a field examination, agreed with Bourret's conclusions At the end of the summer of 1951, Annan Cook (another Kennecott geologist) accompanied Ordonez to the property prior to starting a mapping program. At Ithaca Peak, the structure, alteration, and reddish-brown coloring in leached cavities-hematite, jarosite, and goethite with minor copper staining - made an interesting target. The Peak, which has since been mined, was a Laramide quartz monzonite porphyry grading into quartz porphyry, penetrating Precambrian rocks. Turquoise had been mined from several workings on the Peak. Surrounding the central area of alteration, but mainly to the northwest, there were many long-abandoned underground workings mined for zinc, lead, gold, silver, and copper. To the west of Ithaca Peak within the main area of alteration, surface evidence of a chum drill hole suggested interest in the disseminated mineralization probably prior to World War II. A topographic and geologic survey of the altered Ithaca Peak area was initiated by Cook in September 1951. He was assisted by Richard Vosburgh, field engineer, and by four geologists: Charles Goddard, III, Donlon LoBionda, Keith Martin, and A.T. Stone. When Cook returned to New York, Vosburgh was left in charge. Mapping continued and diamond drilling took place during the winter of 1951-1952. Drill sites were selected entirely on the basis of surface geology. Five drill holes, including a flat hole, located around the flanks of Ithaca Peak, averaged about 183 m (600 ft) in length. A sixth hole caved at less than 60 m (200 ft). The best values obtained were in the first hole (-45°): 90 m (300 ft) averaged 0.62% copper and 103 m (337 ft) averaged 0.041% molybdenum. In another hole, 43 m (142 ft) averaged 1.09% copper and 0:023% molybdenum. The values of copper and molybdenum in these two holes were generally higher than in the remaining holes, although molybdenum values were always around 0.024% or better. The New York office decided, however, to abandon the project even though the remaining field crew of three had recommended more drilling.

Since 2016, electromagnetic interference (EMI) of personal dust monitors (PDMs) with magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) has been observed in underground coal mines. The EMI causes the magnetic field measurements of a PDS to change, which, in turn, alters the calculated location of the miner relative to the machine. Any altered location calculation can potentially cause the PDS to fail to warn a worker who is at an unsafe distance from the machine, arousing a serious concern on safety hazard caused by EMI in underground mines. The search for EMI mitigation strategies led to the development and use of large shielding pouches and boxes to hold the entire PDM to reduce its magnetic emission. Research on these pouches and boxes found that although they were able to reduce the emitted radiation from the PDM, they also disturbed the magnetic field of the PDS, affecting its performance. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.

The simplest natural ventilation cycle is similar to a Joule or Brayton cycle. This comprises two reversible adiabatic processes in the shafts and constant pressure processes underground and on surface. The thermal efficiency of such a cycle is given by the temperature increase in the downcast shaft divided by the absolute temperature of the air at the bottom of the downcast shaft, and is independent of the temperature increase underground. This efficiency is comparable to the Carnot efficiency, which is the greatest possible value between constant temperature reservoirs, source and sink. Two variations of the Joule cycle are investigated, using numerous work examples. In the first, dry air is used as the working substance, a fan is provided at the top of the upcast shaft, and various mass rates of flow are used with frictionless shafts and a constant resistance value in the horizontal mine workings. The lost work less the fan work gives the natural ventilation work, and this divided by the enthalpy increase in the workings gives the thermal efficiency. The thermal efficiency increases dramatically with mass rate of flow, although the enthalpy increase remains constant. This appears to violate the second law of thermodynamics, since the frictionless case has a Carnot efficiency. When the lost work is added to the enthalpy increase, however, the efficiency decreases slightly from the Carnot value, to conform with the second law. This increase in efficiency with mass rate of flow is often referred to as the reheat effect, although the air is not heated. The second investigation is similar to the first, except that the air entering the downcast shaft contains a small amount of water vapor, and there is evaporation in the mine workings only, until the air entering the upcast shaft is saturated. There is, of course, condensation in the upcast shaft. In this case, it is not possible to calculate the Carnot efficiency, but the thermal efficiency is 20 to 40% of the similar dry air values. This decrease is much more than can be accounted for by the larger value of specific heat for water vapor. In addition, the natural ventilation work is almost constant with increased mass rate of flow, and the thermal efficiency based on heat addition tends to decrease. The thermal efficiency based on heat and lost work decreases in conformity with the second law. The reasons for the differences in behavior between dry and moist air are not readily apparent.

The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit Project is a 12 ft. 0 in. inside diameter—15 ft. 4 in. excavated diameter tunnel, 8,300 lf. in length. The tunnel is divided in two parts a 4,460 lf. reach to the West and a 3,770 lf. reach to the East separated by a flow regulation structure in the middle. The project was built for the City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) by the Frank Coluccio Construction Company (FCCC) Seattle, Washington under a $22,600,000.00 contract starting in 1998 and completing the contract in 2000 at a total cost to the City of $25,448,000. An increase of 12.6% from the original contract. The tunnel was constructed in an alluvial sediment that ranges up to 1,500 feet thick. The sediment varies from ?ne silty sand and sandy silt (SM-ML) to coarse sand and gravel (GP-GM) with varying quantities of cobbles and boulders. Most of the tunnel was constructed above the water table although one reach of almost 1,000 lf. had water to above the tunnel crown. The contractor, FCCC, used a Lovat 15 ft. 3 in.900 hp shielded TBM with multiple doors (4) of variable opening to excavate and support the tunnel. Tunnel supports were 5 in. WF 16 lbs. per foot at 4 ft. spacing and4 in. Douglas Fir lagging. Tunnel excavation was worked in 10 hour shifts with additional equipment maintenance and repair on the off time. The original Geotechnical Design Summary Report (GDSR) established a baseline for contractual purposes of slightly over 5 boulders (between 12 in. and48 in.) per foot of tunnel. (Table 1) At the pre-bid conference, three test pits were excavated to approximately tunnel invert, one at each end of the project and one in the middle near the flow regulation structure. The test pits encountered a few boulders but did not seem to support the five boulders per foot (varied from one boulder per foot of tunnel to eight b/lf.). Subsequent to the pre-bid meeting and the test pits, BES issued any addenda which changed the baseline boulder quantity in the GDSR to 1.7 boulders per foot of tunnel (varied from0.2 to 3.5 boulders per foot) a reduction of 67% from the original baseline. It is interesting to note the two separate tunnel reaches and how they were evaluated in the GDSR. Originally the Eastern portion of the work was projected at5.08 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 5.30 boulders per foot of tunnel for a variance of less than 5%. In the revised quantity the Eastern portion was projected at 2.01 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 1.42 boulders

Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). Introduction Opencast surface mining requires blasthole drilling to achieve mine planning. No single method of mining is right for all conditions. Occasionally, mine planners introduce a project with little regard to drilling and blasting. These costs are usually a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One drilling and blasting method that can be used to reduce overall mine expense is inclined or angle hole drilling. But inclined-hole drilling will not cut costs unless a set of required circumstances is met. Several conditions of mine design indicate the use of angle drilling. Geotechnical problems must first be analyzed. Primary considerations are safety, fragmentation, production, and maintenance. Secondary considerations are, in some instances, reduction in amount of explosives, which lowers blasting costs; reduction of practical fragmentation beyond blasting pattern limits; and reductions in overall costs due to reduced volume of excavation. Future trends in blasthole drilling may include incorporation of drill equipment designed to allow rapid change from vertical to inclined drilling. This will allow the operator to adapt to changing hole requirements with minimal production loss. Another improvement may be the ability to chamber holes at any elevation throughout the hole depth. This will allow more charge to be placed at strategic locations to improve fragmentation. Merits of Drilling Inclined Holes Drilling is performed to create voids for explosives. It is done either to recover minerals or to excavate a volume of earth. The manner of mining or excavation can greatly affect the economics of the overall project. Many innovations and methods have been tried, but the most practical and economical is still drilling holes and using explosives to fragment the material. To break up the material, the practice has been to place charges within the mass. This is done by drilling holes of a specific diameter and depth into the material. The holes are of such magnitude as to develop sufficient energy to break or loosen this material, providing for easier removal. In general, more open or exposed faces must exist to aid material breakage when blasting. Inclined drilling can be advantageous in open-cut mining with highwall depths of at least 24 m (80 ft). A minimum of two faces are open in open-cut mining and the material can be thrown outward to cover pre-mined volume. This cuts cost by eliminating the need to remove or relocate a large portion of material. Sometimes the material is of such a mass that more energy per unit is required to loosen it than can easily be done by blasting vertically. Inclined holes allow a more uniform loading of drilled holes. The unit of energy is raised, so little or no secondary blasting is required. This usually comes about only if the main plan calls for drilling holes deeper than 24 m (80 ft). For shallow holes, spacing and burden can be made closer to allow sufficient energy to blast the toe. The precipitation characteristics of copper and nickel cyanides from solutions continuing copper zinc and nickel cyano complexes are examined. Equilibrium precipitation calculations are presented as well as comparative experimental data. The practical significance of the precipitation data is discussed in the co·ntext of an initial step m an overall treatment strategy for mixed cyanide effluents.

Hoses provide a variety of critical functions in nearly every mining operation. Care must be taken when selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses to insure maximum hose life. This article provides some tips on selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses, and gives some background on hose construction and safety. In the mining industry, hoses are used for everything from hydraulic systems that power drills and hammers, to suction systems that carry away dust and debris. Hoses are used on such a large scale that a detailed discussion of specific applications would require many volumes. Dayco Corp. has, however, provided these basic and brief guidelines on how to select and maintain hoses for mining applications. Hose Construction Industrial hoses are classified as much by construction as they are by application. So, it is a good idea to start any discussion of hoses with a description of their basic construction. There are four basic components to hoses: the tube, reinforcement, cover, and couplings. The tube is the inner core or lining, and is usually made of smooth rubber or plastic. Rubber or plastic composition is scientifically determined to be compatible with the materials passing through it, such as fluids, chemicals, gases, or substances. Other considerations in compounding rubber or plastic for the tube are temperature ranges and stresses. In practice, the required compound can be precisely chosen from various charts listing them according to application. There are, however, applications where the compounding of tube rubber or plastic must be customized. The reinforcement hose layer immediately surrounds the tube. As its name implies, this layer gives the hose strength and provides protection for the tube component. Reinforcement must be able to contain the inner forces-pressure and shock-transmitted through the tube, and such external forces as twisting, bending, and crushing. So it is usually made of high tensile strength cord, fabric, or wire that is wrapped, wound, or braided around the tube. The cover is the outermost layer, so it may encounter oils, acids, water, dust, abrasion, and other potentially damaging influences depending, of course, on the application. An appropriate cover material must be selected, usually a rubber compound. Couplings, even though they are a hose attachment, are as vital as any other component and should be considered part of the hose. Couplings are usually made of carbon steel or malleable iron; however, bronze or stainless steel might be used if corrosive chemicals are involved and brass or aluminum might be used for flammable fluids. A coupling is usually in two parts: an insert that fits into the hose bore and contains the threaded male, female, or other type of connection, and the ferrule or collar that fits over the hose and secures the coupling in place. There are, however, some one-part couplings that fit securely into the hose without a ferrule. These are usually limited to low pressure applications and are secured to the hose by clamps or metal bands. Some fittings can also be permanently "built-in" as the hose is made. Couplings can be classified as reusable or permanent. The reusables can be removed when the old hose expires and used again on a new hose. The permanent types are crimped or swaged on at the factory or in the field (using special equipment) and must be discarded with the hose. Although couplings are most commonly thought of as having threaded fittings, there is another type called "quick connect." The emphasis in the title of this paper should be placed on the world "Total", since the detoxification of cyanide in its free and weakly-complexed form with H202 has already found application in many areas, including the treatment of mining effluents. One of the most common forms of cyanide found in gold-mill effluents is hexacyanoferrate (usually ferrocyanide), which is included in measurements of total cyanide but is too stable to be oxidized by H202 or any other conventional oxidizing agent. This has led to the view that H202 cannot be used to detoxify effluents containing hexacyanoferrates, when a limit has been set on total cyanide. A process is described in this paper which does meet this requirement, and which has already been demonstated in two Canadian gold mills. Before describing the new process, the terms "free", "total" and "weakly-complexed" cyanide will be defined as they are used in this paper.

The iron and steel industry continues to operate at depressed production levels due to the low level of demand for steel and foundry products. Crude steel production in the Western world dropped by 13.7% from 459.3 Gt (506 billion st) in 1981 to 396.4 Gt (437 billion st). The reduction was particularly severe in North America where the industry suffered a loss of 37.3% from 123.6 to 77.5 Gt (136 to 85 billion st). This reduced level of production severely affected iron ore and agglomerates output. Substantial curtailment was made in both sintering and pelletizing plants to meet reduced demand. The pressure on these plant operators shifted from quantity to quality. With energy cost becoming an ever increasing part of production costs, conservation was a major area of emphasis. Iron Making Sinter has continued to be the favored burden for blast furnaces overseas. As hot metal production declined and excess sintering capacity developed, many of the overseas operators that have been using pellets found it advantageous on hot metal production cost to increase the ratio of sinter at the expense of pellets. This was the case despite the depressed price level of pellets in the world market. In North America where pellets have been the predominant burden material-mainly because it is necessary to pelletize the fine grain iron ores available domestically-there was also increased interest in sinter usage. Bethlehem Steel Corporation's 13.6-m (44.5-ft) furnace at Sparrows Point experimented with a burden with more than 70% of sinter during the second half of the year and indicated some favorable results as compared to its previous 50% super flux sinter and 50% acid pellet burden. The blast furnace operators continued to press for improved burden quality. In addition to the emphasis on the importance of burden chemistry and quality, uniformity, much emphasis was placed on improving reducibilitiy and high temperature metallurgical qualities. These burden properties were recognized to hold further promise in reducing fuels rates. Sintering With reduced consumption caused by the cutback in hot metal production, many sinter plants sat idle while others operated at greatly reduced rates. The deemphasis on production in many plants allowed them to experiment with various means to reduce operating costs. The most notable action was the introduction of low cost South American pellet feed fines into the sinter ore mix. These feed fines, which are finer than 150 µm (100 mesh) ore, were previously thought to be too fine for sintering. However, when the full production rate is not required the use of up to 40% in the ore mix was reported to be successful with the aid of burnt lime and adequate premixing and granulation of the sinter mix before sintering. The emphasis on quality and tighter cost control also has resulted in a further breakthrough in sintering technology. It was recognized that good feed preparation-including selection of compatible ores, good blending, good pseudo-particle formation, additive size control increased bed depth, and closed control of the sintering bed heat pattern-could allow the production of high quality sinters with much lower heat input and FeO level. Bed depth of more than 600 mm (23.6 in.) was practiced in a number of operations. Total heat input of better than 1.3 GJ/t (290,300 kcal per st) has been achieved. INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. The metallurgical response of a deposit's various ore types usually has a strong impact on the flowsheet design of most mineral processing plants. This impacts the materials handling, equipment selection, capital and operating costs, and plant availability. Because of the rapid leaching characteristics of Chimney Creek ores a variation of the conventional gold plant, carbon columns and CIP was proposed. The proposal consisted of a washing stage which was installed between the typical leaching and CIP stages. The circuit was simulated in the lab and was modelled using a computer program to evaluate the metallurgical impact and the effect on the system's mass balances. Also, actual plant data was reviewed comparing the results that were achieved with the results that were expected.
