Column flotation is emerging as one of the most important new separation technologies of the decade. Attendant to this development is the need for a quantitative understanding of the dynamic characteristics of columns. An understanding of the many important sub-processes occurring in the cell makes possible the development of dynamic simulators for flotation columns which will aid in the design of control systems for dynamic and steady state optimization. This paper presents a dynamic model for the column flotation cell developed from a population balance point of view similar to that which has been successfully applied to conventional flotation cells. In particular, the mixing that occurs within the pulp is modeled with a distributed-volume, mixer-in-series model as an approximation to the axially dispersed plug flow transport that occurs in the cell. This simpler approach avoids the distributed transport model which often leads to mathematical intractability. Other phenomena dealt with are the attachment and detachment of particles from bubbles in the froth and pulp, the transport of water and the bubble volumes with the froth and pulp phases. Simulation of the flotation of an Illinois No. 6 coal in a pilot plant flotation column were performed to test control strategies.

INTRODUCTION Observations during construction form an integral part of the design and construction of major underground works. Observations as used herein include visual inspection, detailed geologic mapping, and correlation of geology with support conditions, as well as instrumentation to provide more precise information regarding rock movements and support load. This paper describes the application of an observational program to one of the more difficult design and construction problems underground -- the excavation and support of large chambers at shallow depth in rock of variable quality. Emphasis on underground construction for subways and utilities in urban areas is bringing this problem to increased prominence. It is our intent to focus on the design and construction problems associated with such excavations and to describe observational methods which can be employed to aid in their construction. Observational programs may serve two purposes. One is to monitor the rock and support conditions in order to provide early warning of potential construction problems. Such a program should be routinely used in critical locations on major underground excavations of the type described in this paper. The program should be closely coordinated with the inspection effort and construction control. The other purpose is to provide detailed information regarding the interaction of support conditions and rock displacements to aid in development of more efficient design and construction procedures on later projects. Is the Brazilian gold rush over? Judging from the situation in Brazil over the past few decades, the answer is almost certainly yes. The picture of swarms of Brazilian prospectors or "Garimpeiros" crowding or, more correctly, overcrowding the gold regions of the Amazon jungle using the time-aged empirical approach to gold exploration has finally run its course. There are two fallacies that have lead to a reduction in the discovery of new gold fields in Brazil. The first fallacy is that "Brazil's geology is largely unknown." The extreme depth of weathering and the general lack of understanding of the shield deposits are at the origin of this misconception. The second fallacy is that "Brazilian prospectors ("garimpeiros") are very naive, have very little technical knowledge and can only produce gold at very low recovery rates." This is more of a result of wishful thinking for the purpose of justifying limiting exploration programs than it is a real consideration. In this paper, the author takes a methodical heuristic approach to gold exploration in Brazil and offers this as an alternative to the empirical approach of the garimpeiros.

In an effort to lower production costs and improve profitability, mining companies have adopted a variety of management practices emphasizing productivity and cost containment. One set of practices that has been used successfully in the manufacturing and electronics industries is "world-class manufacturing" (WCM). It is applicable to mining as well. World-class manufacturing is based on the twin concepts of "just-in-time" inventory practices and total quality control. A few mining companies have implemented quality control programs that are similar to WCM in some ways and substantially different in others. This article considers the use of WCM in the processing environment, although the techniques are applicable throughout a mining operation. The article is also mindful of the variety of customers to whom mineral products are sold. Industrial minerals producers may sell brand-name products to specific customers with exacting requirements, while metals producers often sell their fungible output on a faceless commodity market. Customer requirements are emphasized in WCM, and so the range of these requirements must be recognized. World-class manufacturing In any milling process, specific goals are set for product and process characteristics - concentrate grades, minimum daily throughput, moisture content, etc. WCM has two overriding objectives: the reduction of deviation from these standards, and the reduction of variability in all aspects of the process and product. By definition, reduction of deviation also includes minimizing plant downtime for repairs or process changes. WCM plants use just-in-time inventory practices and total quality control. WCM plants use these techniques to simultaneously improve productivity and reduce costs.

Carlin-type. disseminated, sediment-hosted gold deposits can be better described as hydrocarbon-associated gold deposits. A new genetic model for these deposits involves the intrusion of one or more small bodies of magma into a shallow hydrocarbon reservoir or ma of hydrocarbonenriched rocks, imposing a convecting geothermal system on the local groundwater. Pyrite, commonly associated with the organic material, provides a substrate for deposition of gold and other trace elements in an environment rich in dissolved sulfide. Both diagenetic and hydrothermal pyrite may act as gold depositional sites. Thermal cracking of hydrocarbons, catalyzed by illite, subsequently generates an oxidizing environment by depleting hydrogen. As oxidation increases, arsenic sulfide minerals and barite m stabiied at first. Increasing hydrogen depletion converts sulfide to sulfate, generating acid oxidizing conditions which: alter pyrite to hematite; continue the deposition of sulfates; and ultimately develop late stage acid-sulfate assemblages containing minerals such as kaolinite. alunite. and jarosite. Gold released from the oxidizing pyrite is redeposited as free gold, and pehaps remobilized.

Measurable physical characteristics of placer deposits include geological, geomorphological, sedimentological and mineralogical features which produce the complimentary ingredients with which one can formulate an economic evaluation of these complicated deposits within the confines of a well established geological model. Heavy mineral suite composition and character will change downstream from the provenance area and will compliment the related depositional environment. Careful attention to gold particle characterization during the exploration phase can indicate new source additions, enhance deposit evaluation methods and greatly assist in maximizing metallurgical efficiencies. Failure to recognize and measure these important features very frequently leads to frustrated and unrewarding placer evaluation goals. Increased general acceptance of sedimentology in the gological appraisal of ore bodies has progressed into the science of clastic sedimentalogy using measurable parameters to evaluate minable units. This branch of geology has developed as a tool in locating, defining, and mining alluvial concentrations of valuable heavy minerals. The repeatedly successful application of this valuable tool in conjunction with other classical geological methods can be directly related to the development of a geological model which formulates the distribution of detrital gold. This use of multiple geological techniques permits the transfer of routinely derived data to management. Standardized nomenclature permits the transmission of uniform information thereby promoting credible property evaluation. This approach enables organizations to critically assess large numbers of potential mining targets for definitive feasibility studies. Sedimentology must play an integral role in the evaluation of any alluvial deposit. The resource classification methodologies have always been a topic of research and debate. There are both traditional and Geostatistical methods used in practice. Because of the uniqueness of each ore deposit, it seems almost impossible to have a single industry-accepted norm for resource classification. Therefore, some practitioners have adapted the methodologies to suit the deposits they are working on, but many simply use the methods they are comfortable with. Another reason for the existence of varying classification methodologies is the lack of an easy and established way to measure the confidence in the estimates. Therefore, their classification becomes a subject of debate. In this paper, a new approach is offered to classify the resources using a "Resource Classification Index." The approach using this index takes into account the local variation, the spatial data configuration around the block being estimated, as well as the traditional distance measures. A case study for a gold deposit is presented to demonstrate how this new index can be used to classify the resources. The results from this approach are compared to those from two popular classification methodologies.

An important issue in the use of high pressure grinding rolls when grinding ores is wear of the rolls. Due to the abrasive nature of the ores, significant wear rates have typically occurred. Attempts to address the wear problem require a better understanding of the wear mechanisms. A probable wear mechanism is the abrasion of the rolls surface due to extrusion of the compacted material as it leaves the rolls. This paper presents the results of a study on a number of ores to examine the extent of extrusion that occurs. The study involved laboratory, pilot and full-scale high pressure grinding rolls. The effect of variations in parameters such as grinding pressure, rolls speed, initial gap settings, feed topsize and moisture was investigated. The results indicate that extrusion increases with increasing grinding pressure and rolls diameter, while the use of studded or profiled rolls significantly reduces the extrusion effect compared to smooth rolls. It was also found that rolls speed and feed moisture can have significant effect on extrusion, depending on the material.

Methane gas is an ever-present problem facing the underground coal mining industry. Mine operators are mandated by law to maintain safe concentrations of methane gas within the mine environment. Ventilation is the method of choice used by all mine operators to reduce gas concentrations. When gas emissions are such that ventilation alone cannot control the gas, methane drainage methods must be applied. In the 1970’s, there was a concern that unprecedented gas emissions would be experienced as mine operators began new developments in the deep and gassy Blue Creek and Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbeds. Such concern was well founded as significant gas volumes are being emitted as these mining operations mature. In 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began to tabulate and track the change in mine emissions. These data were extracted from the underground coal mine quarterly air quality-quantity inspections performed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. At that time, approximately 6560 Mm3/d (231.7 MMcfd) of gas were emitted from 430 underground coal mines. It was determined however, that the mines emitting less than 2832 m3/d (100 Mcfd) contributed only 2.1 percent of the total daily gas flow. In 1988, underground coal mines emitted 8350 Mm3/d (294.9 MMcfd) from 487 mines. This report evaluates the changing nature of U.S. mine gas emissions over the last 18 years.

Introduction Although, in general, the openings created in domes or diapiric type salt deposits during mining operations are larger than those created in bedded deposits, the openings in bedded salts are of significant lateral extent. Thus, this paper will deal primarily with the dome deposits of the Gulf Coast and more specifically with the Avery Island dome operated by the International Salt Company where recent development activities have materially increased the sizes of previously standard openings. Geology The geology of salt deposits is the governing factor in the rock mechanics associated with the opening which is being created in the salt. Bedded salts are customarily characterized by having experienced solution along the interface between the top of the salt and the overlying bed. Thus, as the salt slowly dissolves there has been left behind a layer of laminated insolubles which is often incompetent. In most cases, this incompetent rock must be supported by a thickness of bedded salt which is left in the roof as support. Where this salt is of secondary deposition (recrystallized halite) with included moisture, additional thicknesses of roof salt are necessary to achieve stability. The salt which forms the domes of the Gulf Coast regions is from the Louann formation of the Jurassic period. These formations are dipping toward the Gulf of Mexico so that the upper tier of domes which have formed across northern Louisiana in an east-west direction into Mississippi and Texas have a salt source some 10 to 15,000 feet

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, ranging in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µm), -100 mesh (150 µm), and -400 mesh (37µm) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the three coals tested, pyrite and ash -forming minerals were usually rejected best at -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µm) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

Slags generated by the ferrous metals industry can he used to produce high-value ceramic materials. The properties of these ceramics can be controlled by judicious choices of composition, additives, and processing parameters. Standard methods of materials handling, such as comminution and mixing, are as applicable to slag as to any other mineralogic raw material. In this study, foundry slag was ground, homogenized, melted, and, formed to produce a glass, and then heat treated to crystallize it into a high-strength glass-ceramic. The product shows promise as a low-cost, wear-resistant tile material that (-an he custom cast. This and similar materials made from slags and natural rocks are candidates for use as construction materials, acid-resistant piping, shock-resistant sheathing, rot-proof pilings, and, when foamed, even as pontoons.

This section includes examples of discoveries of Kuroko- and Anyoz-type massive sulfides, and shale-hosted, zinc-lead deposits, and describes exploration models for each group of case histories. Exploration or empirical models can differ from genetic models, because ore guides and controls are emphasized in exploration models. Genetic models may form the scientific basis for exploration or prospecting models, although factors that are important to the localization of ore are stressed in exploration models. The paper by Sato (abstracted herein) on Kuroko deposits can be used as a general exploration guide for that type of deposit. It is clear, however, that no unambiguous stratigraphic control for Kuroko-type ore is given in the Sato paper. The paper by MacIntyre (an excerpt herein) describing Gataga, Midway, and Windy Craggy includes most of the elements of the shale-hosted and Anyox models. Although more recent work by the Geological Survey of Canada has modified the Windy Craggy stratigraphy, the Anyox model as applied to Windy Craggy is well described in the MacIntyre (1983) paper. Discoveries of ophiolite-, Ducktown-, volcanic-associated Ni- Cu-, and Besshi-type deposits are not included in this section. Conformable massive sulfide deposits are generally assumed to be syngenetic. Sulfides in the crosscutting feeder zones, however, are classed as epigenetic. Therefore, volcanogenic massive sulfides can contain both a syngenetic and an epigenetic component. Vital to the development of the epigenetic component is a heat source that propels the convection cycle that forms both components. In all massive sulfide discoveries described in this section, it is assumed that a volcanic magma fueled the hydrothermal fluids.

The variogram is the function used to express the intercorrelation of a regionalized variable. It is used to quantify, for example, the natural variability of mineralization and in that sense may be thought of a average disimilarity between metal quantity at two points inside a deposit.2 As David2 explains, appropriate mathematical functions of distance and direction are used to characterize variograms, a process that he says is analogous to selecting a normal or lognormal model for an observed distribution. Methods for choosing a model for the underlying variogram of a random function based on the sample data appear in the literature.3,8 A crossvalidation procedure is available to check the validity of the model.3 However, statistical validation of the choice of the model through the mechanism of hypothesis testing is not presently available. In the section to follow, notation and background material is presented upon which a large sample test procedure will be constructed. The stationarity assumptions presented refer to covariance stationarity. A test procedure is then proposed, and an example is given for the case of the one dimensional random process.

Many oxide silver and molybdenum deposits remain undeveloped because chemical extraction yields poor recoveries or is environmentally unacceptable. Bioreductive leaching of such ore samples at MBX resulted in high extractions of silver and molybdenum. When baseline, three-day, cyanide bottle-roll tests were conducted on manganiferous-oxide silver ore, 13.7% of the silver was extracted. In contrast, 86% of the silver was microbially solubilized into the organic growth medium by bioreduction with 99.8% dissolution of manganese. A followup cyanide bottle-roll test yielded an additional 8.5 % silver dissolution, for a total extraction of 94.5%. Baseline, three-day, acid bottle-roll tests of the iron-oxide molybdenum ore Yielded 1.8% molybdenum. However, bioreduction solubilized 93.3% of the molybdenum into the growth medium. An additional 0.3% molybdenum was solubilized during the followup acid bottle-roll test. Microbial treatment of refractory oxide ores with bioreductive bacteria resulted in higher extractions of silver and molybdenum than conventional chemical leaching. The bioleaching process occurred at a near-neutral pH at ambient temperatures. The bacterial solubilization of silver and molybdenum was achieved without the use of cyanide or sulfuric acid.

INTRODUCTION A rail rapid transit system called the "Metro" system is presently under construction in the Nation's Capital area. The agency responsible for the design and construction of the Metro system is the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, an independent tristate organization set up under an Act of Congress and financed by federal, state, and local public funds supplemented by revenue bonds. When completed, the Metro system will comprise nearly 100 route miles. About fifteen percent of this mileage is now under construction, while designs for the-remainder are in progress. The system is scheduled for completion in about eight years at a cost of approximately 3 billion dollars. The Metro system will involve nearly all types of construction generally used for rapid rail transit projects. About half of the mileage will be underground, comprising approximately 16 miles of rock tunnels, 10 miles of earth tunnels, and nearly 21 miles of cut-and-cover construction in earth (see Figure 1.). The remaining 51 miles of the system is planned to be constructed on the surface as at-grade or elevated structures. The system includes 86 passenger stations, 53 of which will be underground structures. Twelve of the underground stations will be large size chambers in rock while other underground stations will be constructed in earth as cut-and-cover structures. Thus, about one-fifth of the system will be designed as underground structures, namely tunnels and stations, in rock. Copper price rebounds A worldwide scramble for diminishing supplies of copper has pushed the red metal's price to more than $2.20/kg ($1 per lb), the highest level since 1980. The first nine months of 1987, world copper production was down 1% from a year ago, while consumption rose 7%. Demand has been fueled by economic strength in several countries, particularly Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The price has also been helped by interest rate declines that have prompted manufacturers to build up inventories. In addition, China is expected to be a major buyer in 1988 as it stocks up for its five-year industrialization plan. There appears to be no sign of any significant increase in copper supplies until later 1988 or early 1989. This means supplies probably will remain tight for some time even if world economic activity slows. Strikes and other production problems slowed world output of copper in 1987. As a result, copper supplies are the lowest they have been in 14 years. World inventories currently total 625 kt (690,000 st). That is not much above the 585 kt (645,000 st) level reached in 1974 when the price of copper rose to a record $3.84/kg ($1.74 per lb). This makes all the more interesting what Chile, the world's largest copper producer, has been doing lately. Chile has been the world's largest copper producer since 1982, when it overtook the United States. Table 1 shows Chile's copper grades, reserves, and production at its mines. Chile contains roughly one-fifth of the world's copper reserves. At present production rates, these reserves would last for more than 100 years. In 1986, Chile produced 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of fine copper, up 3%. Chile accounted for 17% of the world's copper output.

The Committee on Rapid Excavation of the National Research Council has recognized in its 1968 report the need for "improvement of rock-mechanics techniques for measuring subsurface stress field in deep boreholes and for determining stress distribution in walls of underground excavations". The technique recommended in this paper as being most suitable for both deep hole and tunnel wall stress determination is Hydraulic Fracturing. Using this method stresses are calculated directly from the fluid pressures necessary to initiate and extend a fracture away from a borehole. Stress determination by hydraulic fracturing is rather insensitive to inhomogeneity or anisotropy, is not limited in depth except by the length of the hole, requires simple equipment which is commercially available, and can be carried out by unskilled personnel. The method has been worked out theoretically and extensively tested and verified in the laboratory. A number of field tests in deep holes ranging from 300 to 6300 ft have yielded surprisingly good results. Preliminary underground tests have been very encouraging and most recent measurements in a tunnel complex at the Nevada Test Site yielded stresses that were both consistent and reasonable when compared with the expected directionsand magnitudes. It is recommended that hydraulic fracturing be considered as a method of in-situ stress measurement both in the pre-excavation stage of design and during tunneling.

Declining US ore grades along with skyrocketing energy, materials, labor, and regulatory costs underscored the urgency for technological innovation in the mineral processing area. Re¬liance on the scale-up and automation of unit operations was the sector's primary battle plan. Debate continues on the upper size limit of concentrating plants and whether process controls should be centralized or distributed in the mill. In the materials handling area, the economics of large-scale and mobile systems, particularly conveyors, were well documented in the literature. Comminution, the most costly and energy consuming area of the processing flowsheet, saw improvements in process controls and liner designs. The trend toward larger grinding units stalled somewhat during the year owing to some operational problems at commercial plants. Research and development of apparently less expensive physical separation processes-that also boast recovery of cleaner and more environmentally acceptable products -gained momentum during the year. Because of escalating capital cost requirements for new plant capacity, the year saw a greater interest by mill designers to re-examine existing capacity. The focus here is clearly to modify or retrofit unit operations with more efficient components as an alternative to installing more costly new equipment. The storage of energy in one form or another is a well established practice, demonstrated by the familiar sight of large oil storage steel tanks. Today, however, the problems of energy storage are taking on a new complexion. Increased emphasis on large and sometimes untried forms of energy storage is being generated by: (1) The uncertainties we face concerning future oil and gas supplies. (2) The growing need for the storage of peak-shaving energy on large utility systems. (3) The growing volume of highly toxic and energy generating wastes resulting from nuclear power plants. Concurrent with the growth of these pressures, legitimate environmental concerns now demand that the methods of storage which are utilized meet adequate criteria of safety and preservation of surface land, as well as fulfilling technical and economic functions. From these elements, increasing awareness has grown of the potential role that can be played by underground space in providing a storage medium for energy related materials. The vessels which must be built for underground energy storage will be built by the tunnel engineer, and the design requirements of such vessels will go far beyond the classical tunneling requirement to drive a stable, reasonably dry tunnel between two points. Depending on the nature of the material to be stored, the manner in which the storage is to be operated, and the specific risks to the environment which are involved, rock chambers must be designed as special purpose storage vessels. The tunnel engineer may be required to demonstrate that unusual pressure and temperature conditions can be sustained by the rock, or that containment of a toxic material can be assured.
