INTRODUCTION Rock bolts are one of the most common mine support systems in use today with approximately 90 to 95 million used annually in the nation's coal, metal and non-metal mines. By far the largest majority of these are steel bolts with mechanical expansion shell anchors. Many theories have been advanced to explain the ground control achieved through the use of rock bolts. Most of the theories are applicable to a specific set of circumstances, geology, geometry, rock properties and in-situ stresses. Examples are those which relate the beam building or strata-hanging theories of ground support used in the rectangular openings of a coal mine(l). In tunneling and most metal mining, either circular or horseshoe shaped openings are normally used. Here, bolts may be used to develop a radial stress around the opening, which adds stability to that opening, or merely pin blocks of rock back into more stable ground so that they cannot slip. In most cases, the bolts are torqued to a specified value to seat the anchor and to achieve the pre-load or tension that is desired. To be effective, however, this tension cannot be lost through bolt slippage or creep frequently caused by blasting, moisture attack or raveling of the rock surrounding the drill hole, etc. Furthermore, in soft rock or in oversized holes, sufficient anchorage cannot be achieved with the mechanical anchor, and in very brittle rock the concentration of forces produced by the expanding anchor might cause a crack to propagate from one drill hole to the next. INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. The Afton copper-gold mine is located in the southern interior of British Columbia, 16 km (10 miles) west of Kamloops and 257 km (160 miles) northeast of Vancouver. 'An aerial view of the property in 1976 is shown in Fig. 1. The Afton copper-gold ore body [27 Mt (30 million tons)] of open pit ore with a grade of 1.0% copper, 0.46 g/t (0.01 6 oz per ton) gold, and 4.1 g/t (0.12 oz per ton) silver, occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The geological setting of the Afton ore body is described by Carr and Reed (1976). Rocks of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras outcrop in the vicinity of Kamloops, but the unit with the greatest economic significance is the Upper Triassic Nicola volcanic group and its subvolcanic dioritic intrusion, the Iron Mask pluton. The Afton ore body occurs at the northwesternextremity of the Iron Mask pluton immediately south of a deep graben structure that developed in post-Triassic time (Coast Mountains orogeny) and which was the focus of vigorous sedimentation and volcansim in Tertiary times. The Iron Mask pluton is a lenticular composite intrusion approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) in length in a northwesterly direction. The petrography of the Iron Mask pluton ranges from picrite and serpentinite to latite porphyry. Outcrops of individual petrographic units are generally elongate in a northwesterly direction parallel to the axis of the pluton. The Iron Mask pluton represents the moderately slowly cooled core of an oceanic fissure volcano which built up an island flanked by shallow-water sediments including reef knolls and which, during its later stages, intruded its own volcanic pile.

There is a markedly increasing tendency to design deeper and deeper mines, to use larger amounts of explosive per round, to increase the advance rate of the excavations and so the natural ventilation tends to be more intense in the new mines. For this reason, the mines that make use of powerful mechanical ventilation should also take into account such factors as natural ventilation pressures, especially in the case of mines excavated in high-temperature rocks for which natural ventilation is particularly intense. The results of the studies reported here refer to a very hot mine excavated in an area with a high geothermal flow (the Boccheggiano - Campiano mine, southern Tuscany). At various external temperatures, experimental measurements and analyses have been made of the trend of the thermodynamic characteristics of the ventilation air and of the trends of the air/rock heat exchange along the downcast shaft and along the upcast shaft. These data were then used to work out approximate values of the corresponding natural ventilation pressures. After having identified the most conspicuous variations of the thermodynamic parameters of the ventilation air and the factors causing them, an assessment was made of the repercussions they have on the air flow rates and, above all, on the climatic conditions of the underground excavation sites. The natural ventilation pressures were found not to be constant in time; indeed they change continously and it is difficult to predict the changes. Moreover, it was found that their influence on the ventilation of a section of the mine network is greater if the effect of mechanical ventilation on that section is weaker. In the mine section where the measurements were carried out, some portions were found where the ventilation could become insufficient as a result of the effects of natural ventilation pressures. Finally, some guidelines to be followed in designing hot mines have been put forward which ensure efficient ventilation throughout the network at times with the aid of the natural ventilation pressures, which in certain circumstances may reach very high values in mines of this type.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are. the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread- sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin.

By an order of the Executive Council of the Provincial Government dated January 18, 1979, a Royal Commission was established under the Public Inquiries Act to: 1) Examine the adequacy of existing Federal and Provincial requirements for the protection of the health and safety of workers associated with exploration, mining and milling of uranium in B.C. and for the protection of the environment and of the public. 2) Receive public input on these matters. 3) Make recommendations for setting and maintaining standards for worker and public safety and for the protection of the environment as a result of the exploration for the mining and milling of uranium ores. At that time,and at the present time in British Columbia, no uranium mines were, or are, in operation. Exploration at a number of sites was under way and one deposit, the Blizzard deposit, with estimated reserves of 1.92 million tonnes containing approximately 4.74 million kilograms of U308 was at an advanced stage of exploration. With our Terms of Reference, and because of the diverse geology of the western Cordillera which could potentially host a broad variety of uranium, deposit types, the Commission was faced with the task of considering environmental and health protection necessary for the potential development of [any] kind of uranium mineralogy situated in [any] of the environments found in British Columbia. Over the past 17 months since that time, much has transpired, culminating in the February 27, 1980 Provincial Government announcement of a seven year moratorium on exploration, mining and processing of uranium coupled with the termination of our Inquiry before completion of the hearings. The Government sebsequently modified its decision to terminate the Commission completely, deciding instead to stop the hearing but allow time for the Commission to gather in the work that had been initiated

Methods of measuring in situ rock thermo-physical properties are rapidly evolving. Among those existing in the literature, a particular measurement procedure was selected for further development. The measurement is based on creating a spherical temperature field in a drill hole using a point source heater of constant heat flux. The bivariate temperature distribution 0 (r, t) is measured at several points along the length of the drillhole, radius r from the heater and at particular time intervals (t). A number of different evaluation methods were tested for calculating the unknown thermal conductivity (k) and diffusivity [] from the measured temperature and the known heat flux. The results showed that evaluation using the finite difference scheme and small temperature differences measured at points close together, cannot give a reasonable result. In order to solve the problem a new general analytical evaluation method is developed. Using an appropriate technique, it is possible to simultaneously obtain values for k and [], incorporating a semi least square technique to reduce the uncertainty in the evaluation. The new device and evaluation method makes it possible to obtain from a single drill hole highly precise k and [] values within an 8 hour period. The method has been used in several underground mines in the U.S. with good results.

Many a deposit estimation has been carried out since geostatistical methods were first implemented. To date however few mining programs have totally been completed and even fewer comparisons can be drawn between estimated reserves and extracted ore tonnages. Aluminium Pechiney work a number of bauxite mines in Southern France. As from 1969 they modified their deposit estimation methods, giving up traditional approaches and opting for geostatistics. At that time, the authors of this paper were entrusted with the first geostatistical estimations and in particular, those concerning the deposits mentioned herein. Over the past decade a number of deposits have been worked out and we thought it interesting to report about comparative results. French bauxite deposits are of the karstic, as opposed to the lateritic, type. The bauxite, formed at some distance of the present-day deposit, was brought to and trapped in limestone karst pits. Subsequent physical and chemical alterations may have taken place : silica and carbonate drifts, recent karst slips. The morphology of these deposits is often rather complicated. The deposits are small from a few hundred thousand to a few million tons at the most. The overburden thickness usually precludes open mining. Mining investments and financial risks are often high, making it necessary to obtain optimal information on the deposit considered for mining. For the three cases brought up in this paper, deposit sizes, exploration methods and conclusions differ. They are brought up mainly to show the advantages inherent to a quality geostatistical study and the lessons drawn by Aluminium Pechiney.

A physical model has been developed to simulate the flows and mixing of gases in the waste of a longwall retreat coalface. The model is used in conjunction with computational modelling, and the distributions of permeability and gas emission in the model waste follow those in computer simulations (Pokryszka et al 1996). The physical model represents at 1170th scale a 200 m long, 3 m high coalface with a waste extending up to 280 m to the face start line. The model is tilted to the same seam slopes as the real face, e.g. 22° ascensional ventilation along the face and 7" slope to the dip. The purpose is to investigate the flow of three components: ventilation seepage flow through the waste; methane; and nitrogen injected to quell spontaneous combustion. A heavier-than-air surrogate gas (SF,) is used in place of methane, and therefore the model is inverted so that gas layers form along the 'roof". The main forces driving the flows in the waste (pressure gradients due to ventilation and the density difference of gas layers) are kept in proportion by appropriate scaling of the permeability. Calibration and validation used data from a coalface at a mine in the Lorraine coalfield. The model is now in operational use.

Recently in Germany, novel artificial humus in combination with water-storing hydrogels has successfully been tested as soil improving material in pot experiments. The novel artificial humus (NOVIHUM®) is derived from lignite through oxidative ammonolysis. The product contains c. 5.5% nitrogen. Using NOVIHUM® as fertiliser, variable amounts of the contained nitrogen are gradually available to the plant, depending on the hydrolysis rates of the different N-compounds. NOVIHUM® is a unique combination of long-term fertiliser and stable humus. The tested hydrogel is a polyacrylate/poly-amide copolymer, which is able to improve the water holding capacity of the soil and to retard significantly desiccation. In May 2000, in Germany (Aue region), an experimental site was set up under extremely difficult growing conditions for trees (Quercus petraea) on a uranium spoil pile of the mining company WISMUT Ltd. The oak plots treated with NOVIHUM® and hydrogel showed increased total increment-values, which mainly are the result of the second growth phase. Obviously, these plants profit from the favourable physical parameters of the substrate and the use of the novel artificial humus as nitrogen source. The oak trees can better use the plant-available NH4-nitrogen released from the artificial humus during the planting year. In Greece, an experiment was set up in December 2000 aiming to the afforestation (Pinus nigra, Abies cephalonica) of a bauxite spoil pile of SILVER & BARYTE ORES MINING Co. S.A., on the Parnassus Mountain. The scope was to demonstrate, that the above soil improving materials are also appropriate for the recultivation of sites under extreme climatic and orographic conditions. The first results revealed, that where NOVIHUM® and hydrogel were combined, plant growth was greater than the average. The one-year results of the experiments fulfil our expectations concerning the application of NOVIHUM® in combination with hydrogel for the afforestation of problematic sites, such as the south-exposed steep slopes of the spoil piles of uranium mining. They may represent the most detrimental sites for afforestation in Europe.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th/Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lininig of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The majority of the excavation passed through weak siltstone/ claystone bedrock; although, portions of each tunnel approaching the 7th/Flower Station passed through fine-grained alluvium. Both tunnels were excavated with a digger shield. The project also included the excavation and lining of 6 cross passages, 2 communication rooms and a sump, all at tunnel grade between the two bores. A program of geotechnical instrumentation and building monitoring was performed to detect and document the response of the ground and adjacent structures and facilities to tunnel excavation. The instrumentation program was also intended to provide information that would permit implementation of remedial measures, when and as required, to prevent damage to structures, facilities and utilities along the tunnel alignment. Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. Water-bentonite suspensions exhibit a yield stress which is defined as the minimum applied stress for flow. Considerable debate exists about the yield stress being a material property, hence different measuring methods should give similar answers, but several investigators have demonstrated that it is an engineering reality. Yield stress is normally estimated indirectly from the rheogram obtained with a viscometer following an extrapolation to zero shear rate (the dynamic yield stress), but the technique may be prone to errors because of slip flow. Direct measurements, not prone to such errors, rely on an independent assessment of the yield stress, normally carried out with the vane method (the static yield stress). In this paper results are presented and compared regarding the yield stress of 14 different water-bentonite suspensions measured using both the direct and the indirect methods. In order to obtain a wide range of yield stress values, two different types and two concentrations of bentonite at various pH were tested. Rheological data were obtained using a rotational speed viscometer and a yield stress vane measuring device. Measured vane yield stress values ranged from 5 Pa to 83 Pa. Rheological data collected with the rotating viscometer were fitted using various conventional techniques (interpolation, linear and non-linear regression analysis) as well as using a golden section yield stress search methodology based on Herschel-Bulkley model, developed in house. The vane instrument measures directly the yield stress of the suspensions and requires no further data handling. A comparison of the measured values of the yield stress with the direct and the indirect method is then made for the water-bentonite samples. Not very large differences are observed among different techniques and the variations are discussed. Similar data from literature are also analyzed and the comparison shows that differences on the various estimation methods are much larger than the differences observed in this study.

The Red Dog zinc-lead deposit, said to be the world's second largest, is located inside the Arctic Circle in northwestern Alaska - a location too harsh and remote for some mining companies but just right for Cominco Ltd. The complex has been in operation since November 1989 and is producing 508 kt/a (560,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate, 109 kt/a (120,000 stpy) of leadconcentrate and 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of an Imperial Smelter Feed, a combined zinc-lead mixture that is too small to separate. All of this concentrate production derives from a relatively modest mine production of 5.4 kt/ad (6000 stpd) extracted from a surface pit. Despite being a high-grade zinc-lead deposit, Red Dog's metallurgy is complex, requiring a very fine grind and use of column cells for flotation. The Red Dog complex is located in the DeLong Mountains. They are characterized by eight stack and folded thrust blocks that contain sedimentary and igneous rocks. The Red Dog deposit is located in the second lowest thrust and ist hosted by late Mississippian to Permian age black shale, the Ikalukrok member of the Kuna formation. The Red Dog mining complex is operated by Cominco Alaska, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, Inc, which, in turn, is owned by Cominco Ltd. In 1980, the deposit region was acquired by NANA Corp. as part of the Native American Claims Act Settlement of 1971. NANA is one of 12 such Native Corporations in Alaska. In 1982, NANA and Cominco American signed a develop¬ment agreement and formed Cominco Alaska to manage the project.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Environmental protection is not a newcomer to the minerals industry, there having been numerous examples dating from decades ago. Sometimes the awareness of a need for preservation or restoration derived from the ethics and principles of the engineers and management responsible for development and operation of a property. On the other hand, pressures to clean up industrial messes frequently were applied by special interests such as farming and ranching, recreational and conservational groups, and local governing bodies. Mineral industry environmental controls in this century have therefore been a patchwork of good intentions and bad, clean operations and dirty ones. The Hoboken siphon converter for converting copper matte while effectively capturing sulfur dioxide at a relatively high concentration was developed in Olen, Belgium in 1928, a full sixty years ago. The alternative was closure of the Hoboken smelter by Belgian government health officials who had become intolerant of sulfur dioxide emissions which were causing serious respiratory ailments in the river valley in which Olen is situated. As early as 1958, the Anaconda Company had a full-time botanist on its metallurgical research staff with the responsibility of learning how to vegetate the extensive tailings deposits at Anaconda, Montana. By that time, considerable progress had already been made in restoration of Silver Bow Creek, which at one time was “dead” for as far as 40 miles down- stream from the point of entry of acid mine drainage in Butte.

A computer package has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The package involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. The simulation model based on an iterative technique, maximizes the profits within each long scheduling period (eg. year or sixth month period), and at the same time defers stripping as long as possible. A minimum exposed ore quantity is kept at the beginning of each mining period. The final long range schedule satisfies a set of constraints for each period, mainly ore quality and quantity constraints for ore and waste. An interactive smoothing procedure at the end of each period results in a schedule that is feasible in terms of mining practice. Finally a cash flow analysis model carries out cash flow calculations so that the user can select the best alternative. The linear programming model, based on a certain number of shovel regions, defined interactively by the model user, calculates the optimum production schedule for each short period under consideration, so that a set of constraints is satisfied.

The effective staffing of personnel in a new concentrator facility is a key factor in the success of the operation. By selectively recruiting quality individuals, a company is in a strong position to build a positive work ethic which will become an integral part of it's culture. And culture, which is a set of standards that all employees work to uphold, is that intangible as- set that often determines whether or not a company will survive during difficult economic times. Recruiting and placement of personnel in a concentrator facility requires an emphasis on planning. Management must carefully analyze the following elements when designing a hiring plan: 1. Number of positions 2. Hiring schedule (timetable) 3. Critical positions 4. Lead-time for trainee posit ions 5. Characteristics of the ideal workforce This presentation will focus on a proven system that is efficient (and yet simple) for achieving a new concentrator facility's manpower requirements. IDENTIFYING THE STAFFING NEEDS As previously stated, the key to staffing is planning. Management will find that a basic manpower chart will provide the hiring schedule to meet deadlines. In fact, this system begins with a manpower chart (Figure 1). The chart basically works in reverse of the hiring requirements: the last scheduled hire is the first job on the list. This approach ensures that the company will not find itself compressed against the facility start-up date. A cardinal rule in recruiting a workforce is to allow sufficient time to orient and train employees to the procedures and culture of the system. Problems in selection of personnel begin when the hiring program is short-circuited for timing reasons. The quality of employee selected invariably suffers accordingly. The second section is the key to the success of the manpower program. This is the latest date by which a formal recruiting effort must begin in order for the hire date to be met. Leadtimes are usually as follows: 1. 90 days for company transfer positions 2. 60 days for experienced new hire positions 3. 30 days for trainee positions

As a significant mineral supplier, consumer of primary fuels, and producer of wastes and emissions to air, water, and land, the domestic copper industry through its investment and operating decisions influences the nation's economy and the environment. In turn, the copper industries' decisions are influenced by various factors: government energy and environmental policies, economic conditions, and technological considerations. The authors have developed a framework for assessing in an integrated manner the impact of these factors on the future investment and operating decisions made by copper firms. Specifically, this model is designed to capture the technology forcing nature of regulatory constraints, the differential situation of individual copper deposits and plant locations, and the price of factor inputs and conditions in the nation's economy. The capability to do this has only become real because of the decision of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to create Mineral Availability system1 or MAS. This system contains detailed but confidential information about each mine and mill in each of 35 mineral industries." Without MAS or a similar information system, the utilization of the methodology we offer would be impractical, but with. MAS it offers a unique technique of dealing with environmental-resources policy questions.

LOCATION AND EXTENT OF BART TUNNELS The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) during the past six years has become the Owner of 23.5 miles of single-bore tunnels. The tunneling experience gained while working closely with our Engineer and Contractors in the design and construction of these major transit facilities provides a basis for our "Owners" viewpoint. The 23.5 miles of tunnels are divided into two categories. Fifteen and one-half (15-1/2) miles of tunnels were constructed in soft ground underlaying the downtown areas of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. Eight (8) miles of tunnels were built in "hard ground" in the hills separating Oakland and Berkeley from Contra Costa County and in the San Francisco hills on the Mission Line. Location of tunnels within the BART system are shown on Figure 1. The tunnels comprise 15.7% of BART's 75-mile dual track system. Their 176 million dollar costs (excluding rail, electrification or ventilation features) are 12.4% of the system's total estimated cost of $1.4 billion. The tunnels constructed in soft ground were shield and boring machine driven with ground support provided by steel liner rings. The exterior diameter is 17 foot, 6 inches in the majority of tunnels; however, on two tunnels with a 500 foot radius of curvature, the diameter was 18 feet. BART awarded 14 contracts for soft ground tunneling. The work was accomplished under free air or compressed air depending upon the ground water and soil conditions, safety requirements, and considerations for protecting adjoining property from damage either from the de-watering operations or settlements due to excavation.
