In no Confederation of Independent States (CIS) country does the mining sector play quite so commanding a role as in the mountainous Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan. Its president, Askar Akayev, says he would like to develop his country into "a Central Asian Switzerland." However, in Switzerland, the gold is largely under the street along Zurich's renowned Bahnhofstrasse. In Kyrgyzstan, though, the gold is still in the mountains. Accordingly, Kyrgyzstan's recent adoption of a comprehensive new mining law has attracted widespread attention. Akayev recently completed a tour of the United States. His visit drew large crowds from the business community at events staged in New York and Washington, DC. The success can be attributed as much to the attractiveness of Kyrgyzstan's min¬ing sector as to the personal charms of the nation's president. Led by a half-billion-dollar investment by Canada's uranium giant Cameco, the mining sector is leading Kyrgyzstan's economic revival. And Bishkek is beginning to show some of the same signs of a "boom town" that already mark its Kazak neighbor, Almaty. Mercedes and BMWs already outnumber the Volgas on Bishkek's major traffic arteries. After nearly two years of debates involving government advisors and a final round of deliberation in Parliament, Kyrgyzstan finally adopted its second mining law. This followed quickly in the wake of measures enacted in neighboring Kazakstan and proposed in Russia. Kyrgyzstan's new law replaces the 1992 law "On Mineral Resources." It was one of the first enactments of an independent Kyrgyzstan. The 1992 law made a major contribution to the introduction of free-market economics in the country by ending the state monopoly over mineral exploration and development. It also laid the groundwork for an independent mining industry. According to Kyrgyz government reports, Kyrgyzstan has about 270 commercially viable deposits of almost 40 types of mineral resources. These include oil, gas, coal, precious-, nonferrous-, ferrous-, rare- and basemetals. However, the nation's key draw is gold. Since enactment of the first law, the government has issued more than 100 licenses for geological prospecting for and development of established deposits of gold.

INTRODUCTION Certain activities, such as emergency work and rescue operations, often have to be undertaken in environments where heat loads often exceed limits prescribed for routine work. This is particularly relevant to the South African mining industry where heat stress-induced fatalities are not uncommon during rescue operations. In this regard an excessively hot environment is defined as one where either the dry-bulb temperature exceeds 37,0°C or the wet-bulb temperature exceeds 32,5"C, and it is therefore not surprising that heat stroke mortality escalates rapidly when these limits are exceeded. A review of both local and international standards indicated that the available information on safe exposure times under abnormal heat stress conditions is very limited. Where available, such standards are aimed at the general population, including both sexes, irrespective of age and also the least heat tolerant worker, and not at a medically-screened, all-male population free of grossly heat intolerant individuals, as is the case in the South African mining industry. It is suggested that available norms and limits are too conservative for local application and, therefore, unrealistic. In view of the definite need to protect workers when exposed to abnormally high environmental temperatures, the present study was undertaken to establish a scientifically derived data base. applicable to local conditions, to determine safe exposure times: Any exposure limit, especially in an emergency situation, should be easy to administer, valid and reliable. These aspects, there- fore, form an integral part of this paper. FORMULATION OF HEAT STRESS LIMITS The formulation of heat stress limits was based on the criterion that a heat exposed individual should experience a negligible risk of developing dangerously elevated body temperatures. In order to provide a database for risk assessment, certain physiological responses of heat tolerant men were determined at various combinations of thermal conditions and work rate in a climatic chamber. These physiological responses were analysed statistically in order to predict safe survival and tolerance times as a function of thermal conditions and work rate. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN A total of 202 randomly selected, medically fit mine workers volunteered for the study on the basis of informed consent. These men were considered to be inherently heat tolerant in as far as they had successfully completed a heat tolerance test (Anon., 1991) or the standard climatic room acclimatisation procedure used on many South African gold mines (Anon., 1989). SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes. Introduction Metals exploration activity is moderately intense in the US despite the 1981-82 recession in the mining industry. Although exploration expenditures are significantly less than the 1981 peak, quality and goal orientation of current exploration are high. Major foreign and domestic mining companies as well as nonmetal companies had been attracted to invest in minerals in the US. Its capital markets, political stability, and open-door policy are attractive for hard mineral explo¬ration, particularly in the West. The approach was to either acquire fully or partially developed ore bodies through merger and acquisition, or to fund large scale exploration programs in search of bulk-tonnage deposits. The acquisition avenue has not proved the panacea envisioned for overcoming lack of substantive mineral development. Nor has the decentralized approach to exploration that was adopted proven cost-effective. The emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of all other commodities, raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 1980s. Overview More than 300 companies are active in metals exploration in the US. These range from established, well-known domestic and foreign corporations to hurriedly incorporated, unknown companies financed by having promoted mineral prospects or occurrences of questionable quality. Junior companies tend to be oriented toward property entrepreneurship, rather than the development of minerals resources. These companies have helped maintain mineral lands from prospect to production by holding blocks of property intact during periods of exploration inactivity. This was done through promotional efforts, even though few properties that attracted major venturers proved to have real merit. Exploration objectives of senior and junior exploration companies currently embrace only a few commodities. Arranged in approximate descending order of priority, these are: precious metals; base metals in monometallic or polymetallic deposits; strategic metals, such as tungsten, tantalum, and tin; unconventional commodities, such as diamonds; ferrous metals; and commodities such as beryl, zeolites, and barite. Prospectors are important in searching for these targets. In the US, where they have been financed by major and junior companies, prospectors have proven a useful and low-cost means of locating gold prospects (e.g. the Alligator Ridge property in Nevada). The tenacity and persistence of independent prospectors have been factors in discovering properties rejected or overlooked by professional geologists (e.g. Lornex mine in British Columbia). This has been realized by the provincial government that grubstakes bona fide prospectors. Exploration interest in commodities has always been cyclic with price. Gold is one of the few metals that has experienced a price increase of such magnitude to warrant attention. The potential for realizing adequate operating margins for the Nevada open-pit "no-see-um" gold deposits is great. The present declining gold price, however, may indicate that this emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of other commodities, is shortsighted. Mining companies have been the last to react to price increases, opening new mines based on unrealistic market expectations. A scenario could develop where plummeting gold prices bring recession to the gold industry, as lately occurred in uranium, molybdenum, and copper. 1. INTRODUCTION The economic importance of bringing a new mine to production in the shortest possible time, is well known. In recent years the rate of escalation of mining costs has accelerated more rapidly than at any time in the past. This fact has enhanced the need to reduce time schedules and made it an overriding and predominant objective when planning new shafts. The squeezed profit margins and widely fluctuating metal prices have also increased the emphasis being placed on this aspect. Moreover the increase in the present value of future profits due to the reduction in the time element, can be so substantial that expenditure on equipment and additional labour can be justified conditional on sufficient gain in shaft sinking speed being achieved. The emphasis on time saving becomes more abundantly clear when considering the very large increase in the capital required to bring a modern underground mine to production. As an example, the initial capital expenditure requirements for a large new gold mine in the Western Transvaal, which has commenced production recently, is estimated at R200M, and a major extension to another deep level mine in the same area is estimated at R300M. With the uncertainty of future metal prices and the recent trends in increasing inflation, it is becoming more difficult than ever to estimate the profitability of proposed mining projects and any cost saving due to more rapid sinking of shafts can only assist in this respect. Since the shaft systems are frequently the most expensive set of underground excavations and no other underground work can commence until they are completed, the speed of shaft sinking is subject to closer scrutiny than in the past. In the following sections of this paper the factors contributing to the high average advance rates achieved by South African shaft sinkers are discussed. It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the effect of any single factor, in isolation, on the overall sinking achievements. However, the cumulative effect of improvements made in the inter-related activities is, probably, the most important contributor. Although there has not been any single major technical change or innovation to shaft sinking practices in the last decade, the average sinking speeds have increased, due to improved application and technical improvements in established procedures. 2. GENERAL When discussing South African shaft sinking techniques and average sinking rates compared to those achieved in other parts of the world, it should be remembered that the size and depth of South African shafts are often considerably greater than in most other countries. Introduction Grinding ball wear in wet grinding is due to a complex combination of abrasion, corrosion, impact and their interactions. The ball charge is continually falling from a height greater than half of the ball mill's diameter, and contact is made with ore particles or other balls. Abrasive wear occurs through penetration and plowing of media materials from the ball surface by hard ore particles (Gangopadhyay and Moore, 1985). Electrochemical interactions between the abraded and unabraded areas of the ball surfaces, as well as between the grinding media and the minerals, occur in grinding mill pulps (Adam et al., 1986). The wear depends on the media composition, the hardness and the corrosive/abrasive characteristics of the slurry. The marked-ball-wear test method was used to evaluate the performance of grinding media under nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres. Also, the wear mode was studied by observing the grinding media surface under a scanning electron microscope. In general, grinding media of high hardness and high chromium contents were found to have better corrosive wear resistance than those of low hardness and low chromium contents (Jang, Iwasaki and Moore, 1988). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the size distribution and the shape of wear debris in a study of the wear rates and wear behaviors of grinding balls. Experimental Materials The grinding ball alloys used in this investigation were: •martensitic stainless steel (MSS; 0.96% C and 16.2% Cr), •high-carbon, low-alloy steel (HCLA; 0.89% C and 0.53% Cr), and •mild steel (MS; 0.22% C and 0.09% Cr). The mineral used in this study was synthetic corundum, because it was on hand and contained no magnetic impurities. Debris A 203- mm (8-in.) diam porcelain mill was used for grinding the corundum. The mill charge consisted of: •1200 g of 12-grit synthetic corundum, •770 mL of 0.05 mole/L Na2SO4 (61% solids), and •125 steel balls of nominally 25-mm (1-in.) diam. To minimize the debris corrosion, nitrogen was introduced into the mill. Grinding with MSS, HCLA-steel or MS balls was conducted for 2 hr at 51 rpm. The grinding time using the MS ball was varied from 0.5 hr to 2 hr in an attempt to study the debris amount and shape as a function of time. The debris was collected with a hand magnet from the ground slurry and separated from the corundum particles using a Davis magnetic tube. After the separation, the debris particles were immediately washed with acetone and then filtered and dried. Debris size analysis Buckbee-Mears 3-in.-diam, micro-mesh sieves and an electromagnetic shaker were used for determining the debris size distribution. In sieving, isopropyl alcohol was used. The debris fraction collected from each sieve was washed with acetone, dried and then weighed on an analytical balance. [ ]

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). Introduction Pure alunite (KAl3 (SO4 )3 (OH)6 ) contains 37% A1203. In the alunite ore found on Milos Island, Greece, opal is the principal gangue while some aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides are also present. Processing of alunite ore leads to the recovery of potassium sulfate, alusil (alumina-silica mixture), and sulfur dioxide. An interesting process has been developed in Greece (Svoronos, 1977) consisting mainly of roasting the alunite ore mixed with KCl to disrupt the mineral lattice in preparation for separating its components. The thermal decomposition of alunite at approximately 600°C occurs by the reaction: KAl3 (SO4)3 (OH)6 + nSiO2 + 6KC1 - 4 K2SO4 + 3 A1203 . nSiO2 + 6 HCl + 3H20 According to the process pure alunite mixed with 543 kg KCl, 840 kg K2SO4, 370 kg alusil, 264 kg HCl, and 65 kg H2O are produced. The roasted calcine is leached in hot water. The potassium sulfate leach slurry is then thickened and washed to obtain a solid residue (alusil) plus a solution rich in potassium sulfate. Assuming the alunite ore feed consists of 50% to 60% alunite, the solid residue might consist of approximately 22% to 27% A1203, silica, iron, and titanium oxides. This leach residue could be digested in a hot sodium hydroxide solution to dissolve alumina. An amount of the alumina (approximately 10%) would not dissolve. In addition, part of the silica would dissolve requiring removal from the solution in a subsequent desilication operation. The same leach residue could be attacked by mineral acids such as a diluted hydrochloric acid to extract aluminum chloride (Sawyer et al., 1983). Alumina and aluminum are presently produced from bauxite of which Greece has important reserves. If this aluminous material (alusil) could be beneficiated by any physical process, then it would be considered as a raw material for the production of fire-clay refractories instead of an alternate source of alumina. Experimental procedure Extensive laboratory work (mineralogical and chemical analyses) indicates that alusil is a mixture of liberated (mostly) alumina and silica particles, not a natural silicate mineral. Table 1 shows the chemical assays of two alusil samples that were obtained from a roasted alunite ore leaching pilot plant. The samples used for the experiments were a very fine alusil powder (K80 = 400 mesh, 38 µm). These were pulped in tap water. Desliming of the pulp before each flotation test was ineffective. Flotation tests were performed in a 2000 ml Denver cell. A standard 500-g sample was first conditioned at a pulp density 50% solids for 5 min with hydrofluoric (HF) acid solution (40%). The temperature of the conditioned pulp was measured and kept nearly constant at 50°C. The pH of the conditioned pulp was also regulated to 2.5-3 with HF solution. Then ARMAC C solution (2%) as well as two drops of fuel oil and one drop of AEROFROTH 65 were added and the pulp was reconditioned for 2 min. After conditioning, the viscous pulp was transfered to the flotation cell. It was then diluted with warm water to about 15% solids and floated to separate silica from alumina particles. A rougher froth product that was cleaned and recleaned was obtained from the flotation tests.

Iron ore pellets made from concentrates produced from low grade iron ores are the primary iron bearing feedstock for iron making in North American blast furnaces. Steelmakers are demanding increasingly higher quality to provide for improved blast furnace productivity, efficiency, product quality and environmental compliance. Unfortunately, this higher quality iron ore product must be produced from the vast deposits of low grade iron ores that are becoming increasingly poorer in quality with regard to mineral liberation and ease of concentration. Since some of these low grade iron ores require grinding to as fine as 90% -500 mesh (25 microns) for liberation and since more of the silicious gangue and other minor undesirable constituents must be removed to provide the higher quality, we have come to depend on flotation to do the added work. Flotation technology and other preflotation unit operations must improve to meet these increasing demands. In many cases, flotation equipment, reagents and circuit operating performance have improved little during the last two to three decades. Mechanical flotation cells have grown from 14 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) to over 84 cubic meters (3000 cubic feet) to help reduce capital and operating costs; however, flotation metallurgical performance has not improved, Column flotation has only recently shown promise in improving metallurgical performance for iron ore rougher flotation. Previous column flotation success was mainly in scavenger and cleaner flotation steps for treating minerals other than iron ore. Although some new flotation chemicals have been developed for removal of silica and other minor constituents under widely varying mineralogical scenarios, recovery of iron mineral has not improved. The operation and control of flotation circuits have become more challenging because of the increasing workload on flotation. Better sensing, process control and operation of flotation circuits are essential as we go forward. Iron ore upgrading by flotation can be classified into either anionic or cationic methods. Anionic flotation of either iron oxide or silicious gangue is accomplished by collector type, pH control and selective chemical activation . Similarly, cationic flotation of silica or iron oxides is accomplished by collector type, activation and/or pH control. Removal of other minor constituents is achieved by using specialty chemicals under controlled conditions for preflotation, co-flotation or post flotation steps. Generally, anionic flotation is used for floating cleanly liberating crystalline oxidized iron ores such as hematite, specularite and martite. Earthy and hydrated oxides such as hematite and geothite can be upgraded with either anionic or cationic collectors after controlled dispersion of slimes or prior removal of slimes. Anionic flotation of silicious waste can be achieved by calcium activation of silica. For magnetic iron ores small amounts of locked silica particles (middlings) can be removed by cationic silica flotation, which is the only method in commercial use in North America today. Historically the efficiency of these iron ore flotation processes has been restricted by the loss of fine iron particles (minus 500 mesh) to the tailings product. New technology is required to overcome this loss and improve overall flotation performance. Development of technology for more selective separation of silica and other minor undesirable constituents from iron ore will provide both quality and cost benefits to the iron and steel producers. Development of future iron ore production in North America will face stiffer technical challenges. These new and undeveloped iron ore deposits are largely oxidized (non-magnetic) and by nature contain more slimes and other undesirable constituents. Unless other new technology evolves, flotation will be the major treatment process required to upgrade these difficult low grade iron ores.

After recent acquisitions, including Tamrock, headquartered in Tampere, Finland, the company now has annual sales of more than US$5 billion (SEK 40 billion). With the acquisition of Tamrock, Sandvik has further increased its interests in the mining industry. Sandvik Rock Tools, a familiar name in the mining industry, is one of the world's leading suppliers of rock-drilling tools. And Tamrock is one of the world's leading suppliers of drilling machinery, loaders and equipment for rock-excavation operations. Sandvik believes that the two companies combined offer customers "maximum productivity through total system solutions, including machinery, service and tools." In 1997, Tamrock posted sales of US$940 million (SEK 7.5 billion). In addition to its expertise in drilling tools and equipment, Sandvik is supported by its collective resources in specialty steel and cemented carbide. These resources include extensive research and development capabilities, with annual investments in R&D now at about US$150 million. As a result of the R&D programs, internal expansion and acquisitions, the company has nearly doubled in size during the past four years. From 1994 to 1997, nearly US$1 billion was invested in internal growth and another US$825 million has gone towards acquisitions. Return on net assets is now 22% annually. In addition to Tamrock, acquisitions of interest to the mining community include Drillmaster Inc., Houston, TX. The acquisition of Drillmaster (by Sandvik Rock Tools) has further strengthened Sandvik's position in down-the-hole drilling tools. Other major recent acquisitions by Sandvik include Kanthal, a Swedish manu¬facturer of metal and ceramic-resistant materials for electric heating furnaces, household appliances and elec¬tronics, and Precision Twist Drill, Crystal Lake, IL, one of the leading producers of high-speed cutting tools. With more than 38,000 employees worldwide, the Sandvik Group is divided into six separate business areas. Each area is responsible for its own R&D, production and sales: ? Sandvik Mining and Construction. Including Tamrock and Sandvik Rock Tools, this business area boasts of offering the most comprehensive range of "rock-working" products. These include drilling rigs, loaders, rock-excavation equipment and rock drilling tools. ? Sandvik Specialty Steel. This area includes Sandvik Steel and Kanthal, manufacturers of stainless steel tube, strip wire and bar, as well as high-alloy steel and specialty metals. ? Sandvik Tooling. This business area consists of tools and tooling for metalworking applications. Sandvik Coromant is a market leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of tools using cemented carbide, ceramics and extremely hard materials, such as diamond and cubic nitrite. Introduction It is now believed that, even with the environmental protection measures now being taken, the further application of traditional coal-mining and electric power-generation technologies will inevitably cause further irreversible damage to the global ecosystem. Further improvements in conventional coal-mining technologies, both surface and underground, are expected to have only limited impacts on the economical, ecological and social aspects of coal mining. In countries with a developed coal industry, coal reserves with favorable conditions at shallow depths are rapidly being depleted. Therefore, in the future, more coal will be mined from deeper levels, resulting in higher operational costs and lower labor productivity. The solution to this problem is to be found in developing, promoting and implementing unconventional coal-mining and advanced clean-coal technologies. This paper presents an unconventional concept that has been suggested by the authors. The basic goal is to achieve coal-methane energy resource conservation and to remove barriers to energy efficiency through the adoption of integrated, ecologically clean, innovative technology. The following principles form the foundation of this concept: Energy resource conservation: This principle concerns the exploitation of actual and potential coal-methane reserves in the most effective way with the lowest possible losses and with the application of the most energy-efficient electric power-generation technology. Energy conversion: Energy conversion means the conversion of solid coal to synthetic fuel gas (in situ or in-cycle), the conversion of methane bounded within the coal matrix to free-flowing drained meth¬ane, the conversion of solid coal in situ to a coal/water mixture (slurry), and the conversion of these gas fuels into electric power. Technological and managerial integration: This prin¬ciple means an integration of coal-gas methane min¬ing operations and electric power generation into one commercial mine-to-product enterprise with electric power as the final product. Thus, coalbed methane drainage and coal gasification (both in situ and in-cycle) integrated with a combined cycle of electric power generation constitutes a highly integrated coal-gas methane energy-generation system. The system can be materialized in the form of a local integrated coal-gas electric power complex (LICGEPC). General features of the new concept The coal-gas-methane electricity concept is actually a synthesis of the following four technological components: Coalbed methane drainage. This technique and its utilization attained recognition after commercial operations were proven successful in the San Juan and Black Worriers coalfields in the United States. Worldwide, extensive field experiments and research-and-development activities are being carried out in the area of coalbed methane exploitation and utilization. Recently, coalbed methane drainage for power generation has been undergoing intensive research and development. At the Harworth Colliery in the United Kingdom, a combinedcycle power plant has been built that uses coalbed methane. The plant has an installed capacity of 15 MW Also, Germany, Australia, the CIS and China have conducted various experiments and industrial tests on the use of coalbed methane power generation. Underground coal gasification. Another unconventional technological approach is underground coal gasification (UCG). A number of semi-commercial, demonstration and pilot projects have been undertaken in Russia, the Ukraine, Uzbekistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and Belgium to demonstrate the technical and economical viability of coal gasification in situ. In Uzbekistan, the Angren coal-gasification station has been in full-scale commercial operation for two decades. The operation supplies a power plant with synthetic coal gas. INTRODUCTION A shuttle car is a self-propelled rubber-tired haul¬age vehicle designed specifically for underground min¬ing, primarily in coal mines (see Figs. 1 and 2). The drive mechanism is located on the sides of the vehicle, and the load is carried in the center. A chain-and-flight conveyor distributes the load when the car is being loaded by a loading machine or continuous miner and also discharges the load onto a conveyor belt or into a mine car. As the name implies, the shuttle car shuttles back and forth between the working face and the un¬loading point and is not required to turn around. Shuttle cars have served as primary haulage in this country since 1940 and still perform this function in most coal mines today. TYPES OF SHUTTLE CARS Shuttle cars may be battery-powered, diesel-powered, or cable-reel electric powered. Battery-powered cars were used between 1940 and 1950, but are almost out of existence today because of their limited power. Diesel cars have been used in coal mines, but are used mostly in noncoal mines where rules and regulations are not as stringent. Also, objections by organized labor have limited the use of diesel-powered shuttle cars in coal mines. Today, the largest number of shuttle cars are cable-reel cars. Electric power is fed through a cable stored on a cable reel that may have a capacity from 152 to 244 m (500 to 800 ft), depending upon the size of the cable and the cable reel (see Table 1). This, of course, limits the travel of a shuttle car. However, time studies have shown that for the most efficient haulage cycle, the length of haulage should not exceed 91 m (300 ft). As haulage distance increases, the waiting time for the loader or miner becomes longer, and haul¬age efficiency suffers. Cable-reel cars are manufactured in standard hand and opposite standard hand models. A standard car has the operator's control on the left front side and the opposite standard car has the opera¬tor's controls on the right front. Generally a loader or miner operates with two shuttle cars, one of each type. This allows the trailing cable to lie on either side of the entry and prevents the cables from fouling each other. Shuttle cars are designed to operate with either dc or ac power. Cars using dc power are designed for 250-v supply and ac cars are designed for either 440, 550, or 950 v, three-phase voltage. Most coal mines that are relatively level can use dc cars where dynamic brak¬ing is not required. For mines having steep grades (in excess of 15%) ac cars are used because ac traction motors have inherent dynamic braking and are safer when tramming downgrade. A recent innovation in shuttle car design in the last five years has been the introduction of an ac/dc car. This design utilizes ac input power through the cable, and the power is rectified on the car to 250-v do for traction motors. The pump motor and conveyor motor are powered by ac voltage. The main advantage of this design is efficiency-a much smaller cable may be used and the smooth operating characteristics of the dc traction motor is obtained. This prevents shock loading on the traction drive train, which is an undesirable feature of ac traction motors. SHUTTLE CAR FEATURES Elevating Discharge Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an elevating front conveyor that allows the shuttle car to discharge into a mine car or belt feeder without the use of ramps. Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Introduction The absence of coal-face particle management heavily penalizes the transportation of coal from initial loading to final consumption. The penalties include dust problems, significantly reduced mine-loading-cycle productivity, mine-belt spillage, excessively high coal-preparation costs, chute blockages and dangerous pulverizer blockages at the final point of utilization. Fine particles commonly cause environmental and economic problems. It is well known that these fines can cause safety and environmental dust problems. But it is not well understood that these fines can also swell broken coal to a point where 5% to 15% more time and capacity must be used to deliver the same tonnage. In this paper, methods and rewards for reducing and/or managing fines at the mine face are discussed. Computer-based loading-cycle model productivity estimates, viewed from a new perspective, are made on the basis of material volume rather than on the long-established, and frequently misleading, basis of tonnage. It is typically the volume of broken material being transported that defines the capacity of a given transportation system, while the corresponding tonnages are merely a reflection of the specific material densities. Published evidence suggests that the swelling of broken coal can be decreased very significantly using small quantities of certain nonfrothing chemicals, which are added to mine-face spray water, and by employing improved mine-face breakage practices. In a future paper, the effects on transportation productivity beyond the coal mine will be discussed. The precursor to the work presented in this paper, involving the bulk density improvement for broken coal and the subsequent production gains for underground coal mines, was earlier presented in Leonard and Newman (1989). In the past, this topic has been studied and practiced only in byproduct coking in the steel industry. However, a potential exists for an increase in coal-industry productivity by improving the bulk density of coal to yield a subsequent reduction in delivered cost. This can occur with breakage, handling and treatment methods resulting in the loading of greater quantities of coal in fixed volumetric capacity haulage units such as mine cars, shuttle cars and scoops. Laboratory-based experiments to achieve an increase in productivity by increasing coal bulk density were discussed in Leonard, Paradkar and Groppo (1992). Chemical techniques using small quantities of commercially available reagents (surfactants) resulted in about a 13% to 15 % increase in bulk density, which was thought to produce a proportional increase in the productivity of a mine, together with a subsequent reduction in cost. The idea is to mix the reagents with the water that is used to spray coal during mining. In this paper, the impact of bulk density improvements on production rates is presented. Increases in production ranging from 60% to 88% of the bulk density increases are projected. This analysis was performed for atypical continuous-miner section. In the following sections, discussion and results of the analysis are presented. Discussion An analysis was performed to ascertain the impact of bulk density improvements on face-production rates for a typical continuous-miner section. Figure 1 illustrates the section layout and cut sequence. This layout and sequence is identical to the case described in King and Suboleski (1991). As can be seen, the section uses five entries and 12.2-m cuts that are taken by a remotely controlled continuous miner. The seam height is 1.5 m and two shuttle cars (5.7 t nominal capacity) are employed for haulage from the miner to the section feeder, which, throughout the cut sequence, is positioned as illustrated in Fig. 1. The simulation model was coded in the SIMAN simulation language. The major impacts of increased bulk density improvements on such a production system are as follows: •Shuttle-car payloads, in terms of the mass of coal transported per haul cycle, are increased proportionally to the increase in bulk density that results from the application of surfactant. •Shuttle-car discharge times should remain largely unchanged, because they are determined by the volume of material that is discharged, rather than the mass, and this volume does not change.

No economic activity would take place without human ingenuity, driven by our needs and wants. Economic activity is made possible by the energy from fossil and other energy sources, our technological hardware, the buildings and infrastructure made from materials such as metals, plastics, wood, water, and numerous industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are difficult to define; however, they generally include utilitarian minerals other than metals and fuels. Some of the industrial minerals form an exception to this categorization and, as explained elsewhere in this book, belong to more than one category because of the manner in which they are used. Industrial minerals are so numerous, and their applications so ubiquitous that they often do not receive the attention given to metals or fuels. Nevertheless, without industrial minerals, many of our most fundamental economic activities such as construction of our cities and towns, control of floods, transportation of our people, the search for minerals, the smelting of metals, and the delivery of supplies of clean water would be impossible. How then do we assess the economic importance of such a variety of materials lumped together under the general designation of industrial minerals? The price per ton or the total amount consumed do not satisfactorily explain the relative value of these materials to the economy. For example, the current price of limestone is about $5/t and the price of fluorspar is about $190/t. However, nearly 1.1 Gt of limestone, valued at about $5.5 billion, are consumed in the United States annually, compared with 590 kt of fluorspar, valued at about $1 12 million. It would not, however, be accurate to conclude that the mineral with the higher total value is always more economically important. Many other questions must be answered before making judgments of this type. These questions include how many people are employed in the production, processing, and distribution of the mineral? How is the mineral used? Is it partly or entirely imported? Where do the imports come from? How is the mineral transported? Is the mineral considered critical to national security? Is there a substitute material available in case the mineral supply is interrupted? Where would the substitute be produced? What would be the basic material from which the substitute will be produced? Even when these questions have been answered satisfactorily, the economic importance of the mineral is not completely known until the consuming sectors are studied as well. For example, even though the manufacture of fighter aircraft is vital to the national security, it employs only a fraction of the number of people employed in the housing and construction industry or the automobile industry or the appliance industry. Mineral commodities consumed in these latter sectors of the economy are more significant than those consumed in the production of fighter aircraft, because nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on the purchasing power of individual consumers. In comparison, the entire defense budget accounts for only 6% of the GDP. There is no easy way to present the importance of industrial minerals to the US economy because most minerals have diverse applications and products made from industrial minerals often con- tribute to the production of other goods and services. One way of highlighting the value of a mineral would be to relate it to the GDP reported by categories such as construction, machinery, stone, clay and glass products, electrical and electronic equipment, paper and allied products, and chemicals and allied products. These GDP categories represent industries fundamental to the economy totaling $644 billion, or about 12% of the GDP in 1990. However, these categories are not convenient for discussion of the many minerals that are used in our complex economy. In a general way, minerals are the 5% of our economy that make the other 95% possible. This chapter, therefore, discusses a selected few industrial minerals to illustrate their importance to various sectors of the economy.

In many parts of the world deep level mining relies heavily on the use of refrigeration for providing safe thermal underground conditions. The trend in South Africa in recent years has been to locate the refrigeration plants on surface and to use these plants to chill water that is then distributed throughout the mine. The surface cooling installation normally consists of a pre-cooling tower in which water is first chilled before it is sent to one or more refrigeration plants for further cooling. Presently, the majority of these refrigeration plants use CFC refrigerants; however, to conform with the Montreal Protocol, these plants will have to be replaced or converted for use with alternative refrigerants. The optimum design criteria for installations using the new generation of refrigerants will be affected by their characteristics and are likely to be different from those currently in use. In light of these developments the industry is examining a number of alternative systems for future installations including water vapour refrigeration. Factors that affect the decision on the type of refrigeration system to be used in mine installations are reviewed. INTRODUCTION Gold mining has been carried out in South Africa for over 100 years and most of the reserves close to surface have been mined out; this has led to mining taking place at greater depths, approaching 4000 m below surface. One of the consequences of operating at these greater depths is that it is necessary to install refrigeration plants to cool the ventilation air so as to provide safe and healthy working conditions. With the current low precious metal prices there is pressure on mines to cut costs and in recent years there has been considerable effort devoted to the design of more cost effective and efficient refrigeration plants and cooling systems. In the last 10 years there have been many studies into the use of ice for specific applications (Eschenburg et al., 1986; Hemp, 1988 and Ramsden and Lloyd, 1992) and at present there are three ice making plants in operation on South African mines, each of which produces ice in different processes. In addition, detailed design studies have been carried out on the "split ammonia system" (Napier and Patterson, 1992). In this refrigeration system the evaporator is located underground close to where the cooling is needed, whilst the condenser and heat rejection system is on surface. As far as refrigeration plants are concerned the trend has been to move away from standard package units to custom built refrigeration installations. This has given the design engineer greater flexibility in the choice of key components for refrigeration installations. For example both screw and centrifugal compressors are used, the heat exchangers for the evaporators and condensers may be either plate or shell and tube, and in a number of installations evaporative condensers are used. In addition, the following refrigerants are in use, R12, R22 and ammonia. The acceptance of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments by the South African government will restrict the use of CFC refrigerants and it will be necessary to re-evaluate various refrigeration systems, including those that do not use conventional refrigerants, such as air cycle and water vapour systems, for new surface installations. Although new systems and refrigerants are being developed, only the following refrigeration installations will be compared in this paper: - a refrigeration system using R134a which has properties similar to R12 - refrigeration system using R22 or a new alternative refrigerant with very similar properties - an ammonia refrigeration system - a water vapour refrigeration system The benefits of new cooling systems are not discussed in detail, since they are largely mine specific and outside the scope of the present paper. Since the optimum design for an air cycle system (del Castillo, 1988) is dependent on the mine layout, this system is also not included.

INTRODUCTION This paper describes operational procedures and instrumentation which were developed to implement a patented method of detecting and locating uranium ore bodies. All equipment was designed for accurate and reliable use under difficult field conditions. Data resulting from these developments, some of which are incorporated in a companion paper for this conference*, have contributed to our understanding, of the nature and significance of naturally-occurring radon exposures. Further applications of these techniques may prove useful in studying anthropogenic radon in evaluating the significance of variability in radon flux, or in taking proper account of the contribution of natural radon to ambient radon concentrations, particularly in mineralized regions. OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES The uranium search technique employed by GEOMET begins with a [reconnaissance mode], which utilizes a series of ambient air filter samples taken from a moving or standing vehicle to detect anamalous concentrations of radon. These samples are normally taken at night under stable (temperature inversion) or neutral atmospheric conditions, to avoid the rapid dispersion of the radon clouds typical of daytime turbulent conditions. Radon daughters formed by the decay of radon quickly attach to ambient aerosol particles and are captured on the surface of a membrane filter during a five-minute sampling period. The filter is placed in a portable alpha scintillation counter, and a five-minute count is started at a preset time after the completion of the sampling period. This count is followed immediately by a second five-minute count to enable determination of the cloud age, based on consideration of the relative half-lives of the initial radon daughters. With the use of tables computed from the mathematics of the uranium decay process, and with the measured radon background accounted for, the first and second counts are used to estimate the time which has elapsed since the pure radon initially emanated from the earth's surface. This cloud age, combined with wind speed and direction measurements made at the beginning and end of each sample, as well as with an understanding of the effects of local terrain features on wind trajectory, provides an estimate of the Probable location of the source. In practice the reconnaissance mode involves one vehicle with a single operator to take the five-minute samples, moving or standing, along any available roads or trails in the area to be covered. Under the usual nighttime stable conditions the cool air flows downslope and downvalley, and the operator will pay special attention to locations along the axes and confluences of the natural downflow patterns. These facilitate sampling of large air drainage areas. Successful detection of sources of radon based on high concentrations of radon daughters, and substantiated by evidence of "fresh" clouds, are frequently made on the basis of a relatively few samples taken judiciously by an experienced operator during a reconnaissance. At this point he has a choice: he can continue to cover the designated reconnaissance area, leaving the localization of any anomalous radon detections to await the ranking of detections by priority, or he can continue with localization of the detected source, either alone or by radioing for another vehicle to assist in triangulation operations. Localization of a source involves skillful and experienced use of the continuously collected data on concentration, age, and wind speed and direction, together with knowledge of the terrain from observation and contour maps, and exploitation of the available roads. Since age ratios are dependent solely on proximity of the source and wind speed, decreasing [cloud ages] based on statistically significant increasing age ratios represent the most useful. information in localization. The [magnitude of the concentration] of radon daughter products is also useful; however, it may vary widely for a variety of reasons during sampling for a localization, thus making this a secondary parameter for localization. Large values of concentration are of course useful; typical results for successful detection of a strong anomaly would yield alpha counts ranging from 10 to 25 times background values. These counts are convertible to ambient radon concentrations by appropriate consideration of the decay process. Successful localizations of radon sources using this procedure with ambient atmospheric measurements normally will narrow a source location to within an area ranging in size from less than a quarter of a square mile to at most a square mile, and frequently give information on the probable shape of the source (in plan view) on the earth's surface. Judicious use of this procedure could undoubtedly provide finer localization, but the coarser results just described are adequate for this Phase of GEOMET's uranium exploration procedures.

INTRODUCTION In open-pit mining of high grade ores, operators of mining equipment in a pressurized cab are protected from inhaling radioactive aerosols by the use of filtered air through a pre-impactor and a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. At present, a limited amount of scientific information is available on the worker exposure to airborne alpha emitters in the mining of high-grade ores. (Miller, 1977, Nielson, et al, 1979). Factors affecting the worker exposure to alpha radiation are: the grade of uranium containing ores, the environmental conditions inside the mine pit, the protection factor of the cab filter system, the workers' attitude towards the hazards of radioactivity and the adopted contamination control in the cabs. Four series of field samplings were conducted during the fall of 1980 and the summer of 1981 at a mining site in northern Saskatchewan to investigate the extent of protection an equipment operator has against cab internal exposure to airborne alpha emitters with short and long half-life radionuclides. The variation in the breathing zone concentrationnof aerosols as a result of resuspension is discussed, however no attempt was made to isolate and investigate the factors and the associated parameters of the aerosol resuspension phenomenon. AEROSOL RESUSPENSION IN A CAB Mechanisms of Resuspension [Sources]: The presence of radioactive aerosols inside a cab and in the breathing zone of an operator may be due to initial concentration inside [(CO)], concentration in the filtered (HEPA) air (CC, at the flow rate [QC]), the concentration of the aerosol through resuspension ([CR]), the aerosol concentration in the air outside the cab ([CE]) and the concentration of the aerosol in the leaking air [(CL)], at the flow rate of [(QL)]. [Volumetric Equilibrium]: Assuming a uniform concentration of the aerosol in the cab, the aerosol concentration in the breathing zone[ (CBZ)] may be expressed as, [CBZ+CO+CC+CR-CL] If [QC] remains greater than [QL], there is pressurization in the cab. There is particle loss as a result of the leaking air from the tight cab, however the condition of adequate pressurization ensures that [CL ~ CC]. Also for dust particles filtered through HEPA [CC – 0] thus [CBZ + CO + CR] For the radioactive gases, [CBZ - CO + CC] Over long periods,[ CBZ – CE] but if [CBZ] exceeds the value of CE then the aerosol build-up in the cab has, occurred. [Resuspension]: Turbulent bursts are generated within the core region of a cab confinement, such that the down sweeps and the up sweeps of the air bursts cause resuspension of dust from the surfaces. Particles initiate resuspension by four major modes: namely, sliding, rocking, rolling, bouncing or sudden ejection or by combinations of these. Nevertheless the adhesion force between the particles and the surface must be overcome by ejection forces before ejection takes place (Kline et al, 1967, Corino and Bradkey 1969, Kim et al 1971). The phenomenon of particle resuspension from a surface may be expressed in a generalized form as: CR =f (Uz . R . D . Only the effects of the properties of surface roughness will be discussed. Effect of Surface Properties The roughness of the surface from which dust particles are ejected plays a significant role in the deposition and resuspension of the dust. The roughness or the amount of protrusions greatly influence the intensity of air turbulence in the immediate vicinity of the surface (Schmel 1976). For most roughened surfaces therefore, larger particles may be dislodged in greater quantities than smaller particles. The deposition and the resuspension of dust particles from different surface materials of glass, cloth, metal and rubber have been studied in a wind tunnel (Atiemo, 1981). Field Conditions Mining equipments used are: a backhoe, a bulldozer with ripper attachment and two dumptrucks for high-grade ore operations; a payloader and two dumptrucks for waste handling; and a jumbo drill which drills dynamite holes for ore blasting. Wet ground and dry muscovite mica continued to be the most commercially significant types of mica in the US. Canada's phlogopite mica and some US deposits of sericite mica have also contributed to the overall application of mica in a variety of industries. Mica's major end uses are paint, rubber, and construction material. Its value was about $30 million last year. The southern Appalachian Mountains weathered granitic bodies and pegmatites continued to be the primary US muscovite mica source. North Carolina production of mica as a coproduct of feldspar, kaolin, and lithium processing accounted for more than 60% of the total output. New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Georgia, and Connecticut accounted for the rest. Flake mica was also produced from mica schists in North Carolina and South Dakota. It is also being investigated in Ontario, Canada. Wet ground mica Wet ground mica was produced by four companies: KMG Minerals, Franklin Mineral Products, J.M. Huber Corp., and Concord Mica. KMG and Franklin Mineral Products accounted for more than 80% of the production. Wet ground mica is a highly delaminated platey powder used to reinforce solvent and aqueous system paints for increased weatherability, durability, and greater resistance to moisture and corrosive atmospheres. In plastics, it is an excellent filler and reinforcing agent, providing better dielectric properties, heat resistance, and added tensile and flexural strength. In the rubber industry, wet ground mica is used as a mold lubricant to manufacture molded rubber products, such as tires. It also acts as an inert filler that reduces gas permeability. Miscellaneous uses include additives to caulking compounds, foundry applications, lubricants, greases, silicone release agents, and dry powder fire extinguishers. Wet ground mica prices range from $353 to $496/t ($320 to $450 per st) fob plant. Specialty products may be higher, depending on customer requirements. Dry ground muscovite mica Dry ground mica was produced by nine companies: KMG Minerals, Unimin, US Gypsum, Mineral Industrial Commodities of America, Spartan Minerals Corp., Asheville Mica Corp., Deneen Mica Co., Pacer Corp., and J.M. Huber Corp. Dry ground mica's primary market is wallboard joint compound. Here, it is a functional extender that improves the physical properties and finishing characteristics of the mud. It is also used in various grades as a filler in asphalt products, enamels, mastics, cements, plastics, adhesives, texture paints, and plaster. Dry ground mica became popular as an additive in oil well drilling fluids, where the mica flakes platey nature helps seal the well bore, preventing circulating fluid loss. But oil's dramatic price drop and consequent curtailing of well drilling brought this once booming market to a virtual halt. Forecasters predict that this business will gradually pick up during the next few years and most current dry ground mica producers will again produce the oil well drilling material. Dry ground mica prices range from $110 to $420/t ($100 to $380 per st) fob plant. High quality sericite mica, sometimes referred to as an altered muscovite, was mainly produced by two US companies. Mineral Industrial Commodities of America and Mineral Mining Corp. have equivalent capacities of about 27 kt/a (30,000 stpy). The majority of the material produced was consumed by the joint compound industry. Minor uses are in paint and oil well drilling. The lack of ground sericite penetration into the traditional ground muscovite markets is attributed to high silica content, typically in excess of 20%, and a bulk density. Prices range from $88 to $187/t ($80 to $170 per st) fob plant. Phlogopite mica is a dark colored, magnesium bearing mica rarely found in the US. Suzorite Mica Corp., a division of Lacana Petroleum, mines a deposit in Quebec that is 80% to 90% phlogopite. The dark color has prevented the material's entry into the traditional paint markets. But the physical properties and high purity make it useful as a low-cost reinforcing filler in many plastics and several asphalt applications. Phlogopite mica is ground to several grades and may be treated with various surface coatings for use in plastics or coated with nickel for EMI/RFI shielding applications. Prices for phlogopite products range from $144 to $580/t ($104 to $580 per st) fob plant. As in recent years, production of domestic muscovite sheet - block, film, and splittings - remained insignificant. These resources are limited and uneconomic due to the high cost of hand labor required to process sheet mica in the US. Imports from India and Brazil were the primary sources of the estimated 1 kt (2.4 million lbs) valued at $2.5 million consumed by US electronic and electrical equipment manufacturers in 1986.
