The Bureau of Mines is conducting a research project in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Mining companies, and equipment manufacturers are also participating through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). The objectives of this cooperative research project are to determine the practicality of coupling a dry exhaust conditioning system (dry system) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) to make an integrated control system, and to determine the effectiveness and durability of the integrated system in an underground coal mine. Diesel-powered mining machines must be equipped with control devices to reduce surface and exhaust temperatures to safe levels and prevent flames and sparks from being emitted to the mine atmosphere. Diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers have been successfully used for many years but they have several disadvantages; they are large, consume large quantities of water, and require frequent maintenance to remain functional. Additionally, diesel exhaust is a source of noxious gases and particulate matter. Particulate emissions are composed primarily of small carbon particles with absorbed hydrocarbons and they are almost entirely respirable in size. Even an engine in good mechanical condition can emit up to 400 mg/cu m of respirable particulate matter. A dry system for control of diesel fire and explosion hazards, coupled to a DPF, promises to be a complete control system for diesel engines. The dry system cools the exhaust and suppresses sparks and flame with a heat exchanger and flame and spark traps. The conditioner is smaller, consumes no water, and requires less maintenance than a comparable water scrubber. The DPF uses a ceramic substrate as a wall-flow filter and is very efficient at collecting exhaust particles. Average particulate mass collection efficiency is 90%. This report describes a cooperative research project to combine the dry system with the DPF, conduct performance tests on the integrated system at Bureau and MSHA 1aboratory facilities, and conduct field tests of the system on a production machine in an underground coal mine.

Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24v0 of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50v0 of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include: • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. • Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Open-pit mines in the US and throughout the world are typically characterized by increasing operating costs and decreasing ore grades. Thus, companies must continue to improve their use of human and technological resources to remain competitive in the marketplace. Duval Corp. has historically been very sensitive to mining costs, in part because of relatively low grade copper-molybdenum ore bodies. These concerns have resulted in three haulage system generations at the 218 kt/d (240,000 stpd) Sierrita-Esperanza open-pit mine south of Tucson, AZ. Each generation has exceeded the performance of the one replaced. The latest system of portable crushers and conveyors reduces hauling costs by combining both hardware and technique. Savings are achieved not only bysubstituting conveyors for haul trucks, but also by permitting the crusher-convey or system to closely follow mining as the pit deepens and/or mining areas change location. The Duval system is capable of easy and inexpensive relocation in varying site configurations in relatively short time periods. Its implementation in active mining areas results in minimum disruption to both the mine operation and mine design. This haulage concept allows the mining engineer maximum freedom to design an open pit for profit rather than for equipment. Maximum savings with a portable system are achieved by minimizing truck haulage costs. At Sierrita, for example, the yearly estimated operating cost savings for each thousand feet of +10% truck ramp replaced by conveyors is about $1 million per portable crusher. A savings of $30 million could be achieved fora three-portable system overa 10 year period simply by reducing the average truck Iiftto the crusher by 30 m (100 ft), There is also the added capital expense of buying trucks to cover the additional 30 m (100 ft) of lift. Relocation costs are an important consideration in a portable system. Direct costs can become a significant operating expense if frequent relocations are necessary to take full advantage of potential haulage cost savings. A site preparation cost of $375,000, for example, would add an additional operating cost of 2.8¢/t(2.5¢/st) for a system handling 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy), assuming one move a year, In addition to the direct cost of site preparation, such as installation of retaining walls, apron feeder slots, and equipment pads, there is the cost of site renovation after abandonment. Indirect relocation costs, while less tangible and more dependent on specific mine design and scheduling, can be of significance. A slowdown in the mining rate or a less efficient mining plan can result from a site not being immediately available for mining after abandonment. Conversely, mining in narrow areas can be adversely affected if two or three month lead times are required for site preparation.

The demand for rare earth elements for everyday technology and applications has initiated much research into the extraction and recovery of these rare earth elements. An otherwise unknown group of minerals, eudialyte is a zircon silicate consisting of rare earth oxides (REO), contained in a unique mineral structure and represented by a complex chemical formula. Research into extraction and recovery of rare earth elements involves various beneficiation and hydrometallurgical techniques. The goal of beneficiation being to efficiently liberate and upgrade the REO content, followed by hydrometallurgy to extract the desired elements. This overview will discuss previous research on treating eudialyte group minerals via different mineral processing and extraction techniques.

The primary purpose of the research summarized in this paper was to experimentally investigate the performance of numerous mine ventilation network iterative solution procedures under controlled conditions to determine which procedures were most favorable in terms of number of iterations and total computational speed. The solution methods investigated included: (1) the Newton-Raphson method, (2) the Hardy Cross method, (3) the linear theory method, and (4) the second-order approximation method. The first three of these methods have been widely used while the fourth was formulated by the authors to investigate its potential for ventilation network computation. In addition to the four solution procedures, three methods for selecting the branches in the meshes and three methods for ordering the meshes for computational purposes were also studied during the investigation. As a result of these various options, a total of 36 combinations of solution methods, mesh selection procedures, and mesh ordering schemes were studied. To investigate the performance characteristics of these combinations, an identical set of 180 randomly chosen ventilation networks was used in sets of 30 networks at six different levels of complexity. Here, the level of complexity is defined as a function of the size (number of branches) and the density (number of nodes compared with the number of branches) of the network. To eliminate variations in the solution times due to differences arising from the fans, a single fan with a fixed characteristic was utilized in all the experiments. This paper will deal only with the results for the four iterative methods used to achieve solutions to the mine ventilation networks. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method for mesh selection and random mesh ordering was used throughout the analysis. The conclusions will be based upon a detailed accounting of the efficiency of each method using the total time to achieve a solution to each problem and averaged over the total problem set. However, the number of iterations and the time to complete each iteration will be studied in order to better understand the solution procedures.

Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world's vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel's strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.

The Hai-Shan No. 1 Coal Mine, located in northern Taiwan, is one of the typical coal mines on the island which, limited by natural condition, are mostly small in scale. With the advancing longwall method, the mine is now winning a seam, 80 cm thick, at a 32° dip, with a working depth of 824 m below surface. The annual output is about 50,000 mt of clean coal. At the working gallery, the virgin rock temperature may go up to 46°C, difficult to be brought dam to n acceptable level: because .of the tropical climate with high intake temperature and high humidity. Besides, at this depth, the intake air that goes down the long inclined shaft generates considerable heat due to autocompression. The mine is ventilated by a set of axial-flow fan with 38 m3/S of intake air at 2.2 KPA WG. With this volume of air, the temperature at the working-face is usually above 30°C WB. Appreciable lowering of the temperature is not expected even with an increased volume of ventilated air. For this reason, decision has. been made to try the installation of a pilot underground refrigeration unit near. the lowest gate road to cool the intake. air. from 32°C WB to 28°C WB which seems acceptable to on-the-spot workers exerting heavy physical labor. The experimental unit is designed for carrying away a total heat load of 90 Kw. The capacity of the unit is 200 Kw. The unit consists of a compressor, an evaporator, a condensor and a motor. The heat rejection is done in a cooling tower. Chilled water is circulated from the evaporator to the cooler by insulated pipes. The cooler consists of 90 Kw-coils with two fans and forces air by flexible ducting onto the working face. This paper examines mainly the effect of this additional reduction of working temperature, on working efficiency of the workers. Another aspect of this experiment is to evaluate the overall economy of underground refrigeration in small-sized coal mines under tropical condition. The success of such an experiment may lead to wider application of refrigeration to render many of the deeper mines economically workable.

"Knowledge of the abrasion resistance of aggregates is important when using them for asphalt and concrete mixes and highway construction materials. In this study, the usability of natural building stone waste as aggregates for different engineering applications was investigated. To this end, test samples were obtained from a number of natural stone quarries and stone cutting factories. The abrasion tests were carried out on the test samples and results were compared between samples. The abrasion strength values were determined with both the Micro-Deval (MDe) and the Los Angeles (LA) abrasion test methods. A correlation coefficient was also determined between the LA and MDe tests results using an appropriate statistical model.Introduction The rapid consumption of natural resources has led researchers to work on the efficient utilization of such resources. To this end one can convert waste into useful raw materials, or determine alternative uses of the industrial waste materials. This has become increasingly important as storing or dumping waste may result in environmental problems. In addition, the use of industrial waste in a different application of the construction industry prevents rapid consumption of limited natural resources and can mitigate environmental problems related to raw material production, Industrial waste such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, building demolition material, marble waste and dismantled asphalt have been used as highway and concrete materials (Ahmed 1993, Ramaswamy and Aziz 1992, Schroeder 1994, Ceylan and Manca 2013, Holtz and Eighmy 2000, Hebhoub et al 2011). It is very important to analyze whether these aggregates are of the required quality in terms of their application and their economic life. This analysis can be carried out using various tests such as the Micro-Deval and the Los Angeles abrasion tests, sieve analysis, durability chemical resistance, peeling and adhesion, and freezing-thawing tests (Erdem et al 1996). Specifications for aggregates also include terms that define the grain shape, cleanliness and surface textures."

INTRODUCTION The past few years has seen an increased interest in the determination of statistically valid properties of a rock mass. The increased use of computer modelling for the study of rock excavation behaviour has created a need for upper and lower statistical bounds for the properties of a rock mass being modelled. Obviously, to determine the statistical properties of a large volume of rock, many samples must be tested - an expensive proposition when using conventional testing facilities and procedures. As a result of high costs per sample, sufficient tests for statistically valid results are rarely done. In an effort to reduce both sample preparation and test facility costs, an instrument called the Bemek Advanced Rock Tester (BRT) was developed in Sweden. With a total weight of approx. 35 kg, the BRT is portable and sells at a small fraction of the cost of a conventional testing machine. It is comprised of a small 65 KN loading frame with attachments for a variety of tests (see Table 1) , a hand operated hydraulic pump, an electronic balancing unit and a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor is capable of storing data, performing arithmetic operation on, and printing signals from, a transducer and two strain gauges. A detailed description of the apparatus is given by G. Swan et al. (1). The proposed test strategy involves first a 3-point flexure test on a notched core specimen, followed by a 4-point flexure test on the separated specimen halves. Finally, point load and Brazilian tests can be carried out on the quarter parts of the original specimen. Thus specimen preparation is kept to a minimum. These and other perceived advantages have prompted the purchase of this machine and an evaluation of its suitability to provide data on mechanical properties of intact rock for numerical modelling and rock mechanics design at Noranda's underground mines. Details of its performance evaluation and experiences with the unit are discussed in the following sections. [ ] INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE During the commissioning stage the BRT had, or developed, a series of problems, some of which seriously affected its operation. Below are some examples. Poor documentation was the most serious problem encountered. Confusing instructions for the 4-point bend test installation and its microprocessor programing, as well as poor and ambiguous information on the calculation of gauge factors, are some of the difficulties which had to be overcome. Meehan~cal problems occurred, including failure of the hydraulic pump, as well as electronic difficulties with the microprocessor. Other problems with the printer, requiring its replaceqent, were fortunately covered under warranty.

The number of underground work entities operating under reduced dust standards in U.S. coal mines has been increasing since the start of the decade of the 80s and is currently approaching 10,000. The concern for controlling the quartz levels in airborne respirable dust in coal mine has manifested itself in several improvements in equipment selection and operation, face ventilation practices, and dust control procedures. At the same time, fundamental studies have been initiated on determining the source-sink relationships of the airborne quartz dust. The P-7 method is the prescribed method for the determination of quartz in the respirable airborne dust samples from coal mines. Questions have been raised on the reliability of the P-7 infrared spectrometry method for quartz analysis in powders. No specific method has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples from the mine. In a recent study on the relationship between quartz in the airborne dust and that in the materials being mined, both infrared (IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used on a suite of samples from several coal mines. These samples encompassed airborne respirable dust samples, airborne total dust samples, the oversize fraction from the respirable samplers, ROM samples, channel samples, and chip samples from the face, roof, and floor materials. In this paper, the sample preparation and analysis procedures for the samples are discussed. The data, analysis results, and comparisons of the P-7 and XRD results are presented. The quartz percent determined for the same sample by the two methods are different. In 85% of the samples analyzed, the quartz percents determined by the XRD method are higher than those obtained by the P-7 method. However, there is a strong linear relationship between the results from the two methods. Further, the XRD method indicates an average of 20 percent more quartz than that from the P-7 method. The reasons for the differences in the results and the need for additional studies are explored.

"The ground water heat pump system lades underground hot water which can be heated or cooled by heat exchanger in water source heat pump air conditioner. This system replaces the model of heating of air-conditioning by refrigerator and boiler. In this paper, the formation conditions of hot water energy in Shan Dong are analyzed in order to achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emissions reduction by taking full advantage of water resources such as water pouring and return water of beatification during the productive process of underground metal mine. In order to analyze the issue better, the paper points out some ways and methods for geothermal water often used in underground metal mine. This paper also presents the advantages of the technology of water source heat pump that is applied into underground metal mine. Here is a case study of comprehensive utilization of water source in a certain underground metal mine in Ji Ning. This mine, according to its own actual situation, designs heat pump heat exchange system which is used for indoor heating of buildings and bath for staff. It turns out that the system can save 23% water per year, cut down 3.303 million KW electric energy, and reduce 4160t emission of carbon dioxide. It is concluded that the technology of water source heat pump has broad application prospects in underground metal mine. Therefore, the results show that it is an ideal way to change the present structure of cooling and heating source in metal mine.Introduction In recent years, overuse of fossil fuels has posed a grave threat onto the environment, which makes renewable energy a more important status in energy structure. Development and utilization of renewable energy has become an important direction. Water source heat pump technology is to use solar energy stored in water as cold/heat source to convert energy. Currently, this technology has been widely used in some advanced countries. However, due to facers of implementation technology and component costs, there is still a gap in water source heat pump technology between China and these advanced countries. According to (Blum et al 2011) that after in-depth study, water source heat pump technology has developed rapidly in China recently, and the gap is gradually reduced. Groundwater source heat pump system as a kind of high efficiency, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology in recent years, more and more get the people's attention. At the same time, its practical application has also been rapid development. All of the major raw materials (silica, soda ash, limestone, and feldspar) needed to manufacture most grades of glass are found in Wyoming. Additional advantages for the manufacture of glass include the state's geographic location, a well-developed transportation network, a favorable tax structure (no corporate or personal-income tax), and low energy costs. Inadequate local markets and prohibitive transportation costs to other markets have been the major obstacles to developing a glass industry in Wyoming, the least- populated state in the nation. The Rocky Mountain region only recently became a major market for glass, especially for the Colorado Front Range and Utah's Wasatch Front. Currently, changing costs of the production of glass, an increased market for con- tainer glass in the Colorado Front Range, and innovative production and transportation ideas (e.g., production of selected types of glass and bulk shipments of specification-glass pellets) favor developing a glass plant in Wyoming. Thus, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) and other state agencies have been conducting studies and contacting investors in an effort to attract a glass-manufacturing plant to the state. Between 1987 and 1993, three locations of silica-sand and -rock deposits were studied in Wyoming (Cassa, Plumbago Creek, and John Blue). Funding was provided by the WSGS operating budget and local and state Department of Commerce economic- development grants. The reports on these areas were released between 1988 and 1993. In 1988-89, a California-based company conducted additional drilling and feasibility studies and prepared to construct a glass plant in Cheyenne, using the Cassa silica source. However, due to losses incurred by some of their other investments, the company did not proceed. In 1997, the Wyoming Science, Technology, and Energy Administration (STEA) contracted a market study for glass manufactured in Wyoming, using information provided by the WSGS. The STEA contacted several major glass producers, and a major glass-producing company began feasibility studies in January 1998, for the construction of a glass plant. In June 1998, bids to supply brown beer bottles to the Budweiser brewery northeast of Fort Collins, Colorado, were submitted by at least two companies that were considering glass-plant sites in Wyoming.

Namibia is known as water stressed country with a limited amount of fresh water. Therefore, the use of water is an important topic in the country’s development agenda. Water is a shared and finite resource, with high social, cultural, environmental and economic value. However, freshwater resources are under pressure from ore processing, industrialization, urbanization and the demands of a growing population. In Namibia, ore processing, coupled with the anticipated increase in water demand for human consumption and other uses, has created significant stress on the limited water resources of the country. This is critical in the mining industry as water remains typically the prime environmental medium (besides air) that is affected by mining activities. This study sought to investigate the strides made in water management in mining, especially in environmentally sensitive areas of Namibia. Most mining companies operate next or alongside farms, national parks and fishing areas. The overall objective of this research was to highlight the current practices in Namibia’s mineral industry operating in environmentally sensitive areas especially in areas where uranium is being mined and processed. The methodology consisted of comprehensive literature review, field visits to the case study areas, and comparative studies with best practices. This study shows that over a ten-year period, freshwater consumption was reduced by over 55% per tonne of milled ore in uranium mines, resulting in substantive financial savings as well as the delay in water augmentation through desalination. The strategies employed by the Namibian companies involve inclusive stakeholders’ engagement, recycling and reuse, and the minimization of water losses. The realization that the water challenge cannot be solved by any one party acting alone has been fundamental in ensuring environmental compliance within the mining industry in Namibia. Namibia’s industrial leaders have increasingly recognized that reducing the water footprint of mining activities must be one of the key performance indicators for management. The major finding of this study was that Namibia with its unique ecosystems, mineral reserves, and emerging industries can harness a wide range of resources both to improve the welfare of its citizens and to protect the integrity of its environment.

Minera Escondida is the world's largest copper mine. Its capacity is more than 800 kt/a (880,000 stpy) of copper. The Escondida open-pit mine operates at an elevation of 3,100 m (10,170 ft). It is located in the Atacama desert about 160 km (100 miles) southeast of the port of Antofagasta. At Coloso, 14 km (8 miles) south of Antofagasta, copper concentrate is dewatered by filtration for storage and shipment to overseas markets (Fig. 1). Concentrate filtrate water, after being treated to remove suspended solids, is discharged at 60 m (200 ft) depth into the Pacific Ocean. This effluent is free of particulates. However, it does contain metal levels above US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) receiving water criterion. EPA standards are more strict than Chilean receiving water guidelines. However, a multiport diffuser provides rapid mixing of sea water with effluent to ensure metal levels in the receiving water remain below EPA receiving water guidelines. The Escondida Mine began operation in December 1990 at a rated mill capacity of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd). Since then, the complex has since undergone three expansions. In 1996, it processed 115 kt/d (127,000 stpd) of ore. At Coloso in 1993, about 25% of the copper concentrate was fed to an ammonia leach plant for solvent extraction and electrowinng of cathode copper. This plant is designed to produce 80 kt/a (88,000 st/year) of cathode copper. In 1995, the ocean diffuser system's capacity was doubled to accommodate increased flows to a maximum 50 L/sec (793 gpm). This was achieved by extending the diffuser chamber by 32 m (105 ft) and adding 16 nozzles, which doubled the diffuser's capacity. In November 1996, Rescan Environmental Services began a field verification of the outfall/diffuser system's performance. The study's objective was to determine the performance of the outfall/diffuser system by measuring dilution factors using fluorescent Rhodamine dye and to determine if copper concentrations are below the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water quality criterion of 2.9 µg/L total copper (EPA, 1986). Rhodamine dye was injected into the outfall/diffuser system. An oceanographic survey using an in situ fluorometer was conducted to measure dye concentrations in the effluent plume. Water column characteristics were also measured. These included current speed and direction.

With the current trends towards the concentration of extraction to fewer but higher production units in deeper seams, often of higher coal rank, the role of methane drainage ranges has become critical. As mines exploit seams at greater depth and more remote locations there has been a need to extend the lengths of methane drainage ranges and to increase the capacity of the surface pumps. This trend has highlighted the need to effectively simulate the operation of a methane drainage range in order to produce the optimum design and operation of a safe and economic system. This paper describes the development of such an analytical tool. The application of this computer model is illustrated by the analysis of the operation of the drainage system of an extensive mine. The paper concludes by considering the development of a [Knowlege Based or Decision Support System] which will assist the ventilation engineer in assessing the current performance of an existing drainage range and will suggest possible remedial modifications or design strategies which may improve the system performance. INTRODUCTION In order to maintain the general body methane levels to below predetermined statutory threshold limit values (TLV's) on major longwall production units there are, for a given production rate, two major complementary control devices which may be employed by the ventilation engineer. These are the combined design and application of a competent mine ventilation and methane drainage system. The methane drainage system should be designed so as to maximise the capture of the methane (firedamp) from the seam being mined and the strata gas liberated in the vicinity of the extraction zone from gas bearing seams or other reservoirs of gas situated at above or below the mining horizon. The design fresh air quantity entering the face should ensure that under normal operating conditions the methane entering in the vicinity of the face is rapidly dispersed and dilute to well below statutory TLV's. The drainage system must therefore be designed to maximise the capture of the methane gas liberated to minimise the amount of gas which enters the ventilation airstream. GAS DRAINAGE The inherent dangers of methane emissions in mine workings have been a problem of concern to mining engineers for many years. To alleviate the risk, methane drainage has been employed for some years to capture the gas before it becomes a hazard to the operation of the mine. The method of drainage employed will be dependent on a number of factors which include the longwall mining method and production cycle employed, the characteristics of the coal seam being extracted and those of the adjacent gas bearing strata. Traditional headed rebar has existed in the mining industry as a ground support product for many years. The head of a rebar bolt is most commonly produced by hot upset die forging. Upset die forging produces a rugged, simple head that performs well. Certain elements of the head must comply with regulatory standards, such as ASTM F432-95, which offers a standard test procedure to ensure quality of the product. The head style produced by all major manufacturers has been optimized to reduce manufacturing costs, provide greater miner safety and provide an excellent performing product. Observations were made in some mines of heads failing under in-situ loading. These observations could not be replicated according to the ASTM testing method. This paper highlights the problem and how a solution was developed. The development includes pictures of in-situ failures from the underground operations, laboratory replication tests indicating how this loading occurs, and then the use of this calibrated test method to validate the new design created.

Turquoise, peridot, chrysocoll a, petrified wood, fire agate and crystallized mineral specimens are among the gemstones commercially mined. Numerous additional deposits are operated by hobbyists. The State's reputation as a source of gemstones and specimens for the collector and lapidary adds to the economy of the State by attracting tourists. Production of gemstones further adds to the State's economy through employment in the value added gemstone processing industries and by employment of Native American craftsmen.

Performance of belt conveyors, service life of belts and mechanical elements can be radically improved if the automatic adjustment of the belt speed movement is made in such a way, that the unit load over the conveyor length be constant and close to the rated one under random input freight traffic. Such an adjustment is possible when the system of a controllable thyristor electric drive on the basis of induction squirrel cage motor is used. Computer-aided adjustment of the belt conveyor movement is effected via bicontour digital control of the main drive in order to redistribute loads when the loading of conveyor and contour of the control of tension drive are changed. The system envisages control and condition monitoring of the conveyor electromechanical system, as well as metering of electrical power and the amount of conveyor freight. The results of the simulation of speed control of the conveyor belt are given in the report. Mathematical model of the conveyor electromechanical system describes the movement of the belt with cargo and the tension drive. The input cargo traffic is assumed as stationary ergidic random process with the assigned characteristics. The solution of the problem of the synthesis of a closed-loop control system, the structure and parameters of adjustment, the conditions of asymptotic stability of the control back-up system and the condition of minimization of mean square error of shadowing are also given in the report. Microprocessor controller is used to realize the function of the adjustment unit. Under this control system standard mode of conveyor operation, different modes of start-up, operating mode with decreased speed when transporting people, service and emergency braking of a conveyor and some other modes are realized. The digital model of a conveyor as an instrument for decision making in case of emergency is used in those modes. MASTER TEXT Long-standing practice of belt conveyor operation in mines of Russia has proved their inefficient use with 40-70% capacity and 20-25% availability factor. It is associated with unreasonable power intensity and reduction of service life of mechanical components, and as a result, with the growth of total transportation costs. Low efficiency of conveyor application can be explained by the extremely irregular distribution of conveyor freight traffic. Usually, the width of a conveyor belt is identified in accordance with the possible maximum traffic value, engine power capacity for long-term operation under rated loads. However, actually a conveyor often runs without any load and its average load in most cases is lower than the rated one. The problem can be eliminated by way of the adjustment of the operational mode of a conveyor according to an actual input freight traffic via belt speed control providing for the conveyor regular linear load which is nearly equivalent to the rated one. Experimental research into freight traffic under working conditions of the operating underground and open-cast mines proves the fact that the actual freight traffic can be adequately presented through the model of stationary random function of time, for ex- ample, as a J (t) continuous random Gaussian process that is modulated with a G(t) elementary pulse flow:

Introduction Brine reservoirs along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf coasts are currently under study to investigate the technical and economic viability of production wells designed to extract methane gas in solution. The effect of well pressure drawdown on reservoir rock and associated overburden material is important to well performance predictions and the analysis of potential subsidence problems. Consequently a series of compaction tests have been conducted on sandstone and shale cored from a test well drilled near Hitchcock, Texas, in order to determine the variation of mechanical properties to be expected over the producing life of the formation. Previous Work The referenced tests are part of an extended study of geopressured-geothermal reservoir behavior, including compaction (Jogi, Gray, Ashman, and Thompson, 1981 and Jogi, Kalra, Gray, and Thompson, 1981) and creep (Thompson, Jogi, Gray, and Richardson, 1981) tests of reservoir rock and related reservoir performance studies (Rago, Okhuma, Seperhnoori, and Thompson, 1985). Recent work has considered the nonlinear constitutive behavior of sandstone (Fahrenthold and Gray, 1985 and 19861, while additional experimental work is reported here. Geological structure and composition of the Hitchcock field from which the core samples were obtained is discussed by Light (1985). Experimental Procedure Compaction tests were conducted on cylindrical cores, nominally 2.75 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, with independent control of the axial, confining, and pore pressures. Axial and radial deformation of the samples were measured in tests over a range of effective stress states expected to develop over the reservoir lifetime. The term effective stress as used here refers to the algebraic difference of the total stress and pore pressure, with compression taken as positive. Three types of compaction tests were conducted on the sandstone. In the uniaxial tests, axial total stress and radial strain were held constant as the pore pressure was reduced, similating one dimensional compaction which may occur during reservoir depletion. In the triaxial tests, radial total stress and pore pressure were held constant as the axial total stress was increased, duplicating conventional rock compaction test procedures. In the pore pressure drawdown tests, axial and radial total stresses were held constant while the pore pressure was reduced, in order to investigate differences in sample response to mechanical and pore pressure loading. Compaction tests were also conducted on shale material obtained from the reservoir overburden. The field coring process provided few consolidated shale sections sufficiently large to allow preparation of samples with the dimensions described above. With additional attrition during sample preparation of this brittle material, ultimate yield of the coring effort was limited. The few available samples were tested in uniaxial and triaxial tests similar to those described above. The use of displacement transducers to measure sample deformation avoided the difficulty of strain gauge installation on this material. Test Results The sandstone and shale both demonstrated nonlinear stress-strain behavior, with hysteresis and residual strain present upon unloading. Polynomial interpolation of the stress-strain curves was used in the calculation of incremental values for the loading and unloading moduli. Figures 1 and 2 show example axial effective stress-axial strain curves for triaxial tests conducted on sandstone and shale samples. The figures plot incremental stress and strain variables, defined as deviations from the state of prestress to which the sample was subjected. The state of prestress was varied between tests in order to investigate material behavior over the entire stress and strain space of interest.
