The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of titanium from 39 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries. The evaluated properties account for 76 pet of the market economy country demonstrated resources, which total 603 Mt of contained titanium dioxide (Ti02) in the minerals rutile, ilmenite, leucoxene, and anatase, and represent 95 pct of current production. Approximately 250 Mt of contained Ti02 could be economically recovered from evaluated titanium operations at January 1992 market prices. In terms of mineral concentrates, this equals approximately 19 Mt of rutile concentrate, 110 Mt of ilmenite concentrate, 47 Mt of synthetic rutile concentrate (in addition to the ilmenite), and 160 Mt of titanium slag that could be recovered. Over the past decade, the titanium minerals industry has adapted to the changing market. In the 1980's, titanium producers expanded production because of the rising demand for titanium products. Today, the titanium industry is in a state of overcapacity, and byproduct revenues, such as that from zircon, have become essential in keeping operations profitable. The industry has also witnessed a greater dependence on upgraded ilmenite products, such as titanium slag and synthetic rutile, because of the expense of rutile and the lower wastes emitted from these upgraded products. As a result of this dependence on upgraded ilmenite products, South Africa has become a leading titanium producing country and has displaced Australian production.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted desorption work on fine coal particles at near atmospheric pressure. An apparatus Iris been developed that uses a capacitance manometer to measure desorption of methane from coal particles up to, 2 inches in diameter and pressures up to 1,000 psi. This will make it possible to duplicate the desorption process as it occurs in its natural underground environment.

Thin sections of coal have been prepared for many years either by cutting on a microtome (1,2)5 or by grinding and polishing (2,1). Specimens of most coals had to be demineralized in hydrofluoric acid and softened in caustic solutions before they could be successfully cut with a conventional microtome. Some lignites could be cut without pretreatment. Jeffrey (1) obtained sections from coals of all ranks, although long and tedious pretreatment was required for anthracite. His sections were less than 1 cm.2 in area (probably much less for high rank coals) and about 5 microns thick. Thiessen (2) also cut sections of softened coals, mostly of low rank. His sections were a few square millimeters in area and about 3 microns thick. However, Thiessen preferred ground and polished sections for detailed studies because they were larger and had not been chemically attacked by softening media. He prepared ground sections as large as 4 cm.2 in area and usually 5 to 10 microns thick. Thousands of such sections, covering complete column samples of many coal beds, were studied for a number of years (4). With the development of the electron microscope and increased interest in quantitative optical studies of coals, a need for much thinner sections arose. However, no suitable technique for preparing such sections was known until Fernández-Morán developed a diamond knife for cutting ultrathin sections of hard materials (5). Workers at the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches de Charbonnages de France applied this new tool to the cutting of coal sections and have recently described their technique to the Burg, of Mines. This report presents a computer code that has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for isolating naturally occurring clusters of data plotted on the unit hemisphere and testing these clusters against a probability distribution which admits elliptical symmetry about its mean. A listing of the computer code is provided along with an example output illustrating the delineation and analysis of clusters in fracture orientations measured in a porphyry copper deposit.

A method for evaluating the relative incendivity of detonating cord in natural gas-air mixtures was developed. The method consisted of firing short lengths of cord in bundles to determine the number of strands per bundle which would ignite natural gas-air mixtures 50 percent of the time in the 45-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines. The relative efficiency of a flame quenching agent, potassium acid tartrate (KHT), when incorporated in both the pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) core and the polyethylene sheath, was explored. The effects of sheath thickness, sheath composition, core weight, and core composition were evaluated. The bundle method established a quantitative scale for evaluating the relative incendivity of cords. The relative incendivity determined by the bundle method was then compared with the incendivity of 100-foot lengths of detonating cord when initiated in 8 percent natural gas in the 640-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines.

Permit visual inspection of underground cavities dam the surface. Approach A closed circuit TV camera and a 35mm still camera are lowered down a borehole, and remotely operated. How It Works A platform holding the cameras, and other equipment is lowered on a graduated cable until the depth of interest is reached. Then a quartz lamp and the TV camera are turned on. The television picture is monitored at the surface and recorded on video tape. Areas of special interest are photographed with a 35mm still camera. These photographs contain more detail than TV images because photographic film is capable of higher resolution than a TV transmission.

Variations between laboratories on the silica and alumina content of calcined kyanite led to this Bureau of Mines study of the extent and nature of the differences. In particular, Bureau scientists hoped the study would lead to correction of the causes of the dissimilarities. A sample of calcined Kenya kyanite was analyzed by seven different laboratories familiar with silicate analysis. The compiled data indicated differences originating from lack of recovery of silica after two acidic dehydrations, from high alumina caused by several factors, from loss or gain of iron during sample fusion, and from indifference regarding the accurate determination of minor constituents.

The Bureau of Mines investigated an electrolytic technique for oxidizing ore slurried with brine to determine its effectiveness in extracting mercury from ores. Optimization experiments conducted on a 2.5-pound-mercury-per-ton ore resulted in 95 percent mercury extraction with operating conditions of 30° C, a current density of 0.5 ampere per square inch, and a treatment time of 3.5 hours. Corresponding power consumption amounted to 38 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore treated. Amenability experiments conducted on 62 different mercury ores resulted in 90 to 99 percent mercury dissolution from ores containing 0.6 to 20 pounds of mercury per ton of ore, Treatment time ranged from 1 to 7 hours in 4-to 20-percent sodium chloride solutions, and power consumption was in the range of 10 to 50 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Pilot mill experiments in a 100-to 200-pound-per-hour extraction plant have been in progress to quantify power and reagent requirements. These data will be reported in a subsequent publication.

Fertilizers are indispensable to national preparedness and defense. Production of adequate supplies of nourishing food for sustaining life in the United States is absolutely dependent in many parts of the country on the use of artificial fertilizers of various types. Only by using fertilizers can we maintain our present volume of production without great additional expense. Otherwise we would have to increase crop areas constantly to compensate for declining yields, we would have to lower the quality of food marketed, and standards of farm living and rural civilization would decline. About 60 million of the 360 million acres of crops grown annually in the United States Vow require fertilizing each year, and between 7 and 9 million tons of commercial fertilizers are consumed annually for this purpose.

At the present time many coal preparation plants handle coal-clay wastes in one of two methods. In one method, the waste is processed in a thickener, followed by further dewatering through filtration, and subsequent blending with coarse waste refuse from the preparation plant. The resulting mixture is then disposed by stacking it in available storage locations. The coal-clay waste is often reslurried by rain or water from other sources, causing a potentially unsafe situation such as mud flows. The other method often used requires thickening and impoundment of the thickened slurry behind earthen dams which poses safety risks if structural failure of the dams occurs. To overcome these two problems, a flocculation method was developed which produces a stable agglomerated material resistant to reslurrying. How It Works The new method involves treating coal-clay waste with lime to raise the pH and flocculating the slurry with a nontoxic polymer of polyethylene oxide. The resulting floes are dewatered on a static screen and agglomerated. For extremely fine waste, further dewatering of the material is accomplished on a rotary trammel screen. The dewatered material may be ponded or mixed with coarse waste from the preparation plant to produce a stable mixture that can be stacked.

An ozone detector was built and evaluated for its applicability in smog-chamber studies. The detection method is based on the reaction of ozone with ethylene and the measurement of resultant chemiluminescence. In the first phase of evaluation, the detector's response to ozone was studied as a function of several instrument parameters, and optimum conditions were defined for the maximum and most stable responses to ozone. In subsequent evaluations, the method was checked for sensitivity, precision, and interferences and was compared with two alternative methods. Results showed the chemiluminescence method to be acceptably sensitive and precise for smog-chamber studies and superior to the Mast ozone meter and KI (colorimetric 1 percent neutral-potassium iodide method) methods in that it is specific for ozone.

For the past several years, the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in developing two new oxygen self-rescuers through research contracts with private industry. These new oxygen self-rescuers are designed to be carried by a miner while he is at work and are used during emergency escape, supplying high-purity oxygen to the user and, at the same time, absorbing carbon dioxide (C02), The first of the two new self-rescue breathing devices is a 10-minute, self-contained apparatus developed by the Mine Safety Appliance Co, Size and weight of the unit are comparable to the currently used self-rescue devices. The second device, designed and developed by Lockheed Missiles and Space Corp., is 8. 4.5-lb package which supplies 1 hour of oxygen to the miner. Both devices have a canister which contains the oxygen-producing and CO2-absorbing potassium superoxide chemical, a breathing bag, a bite-type mouthpiece, noseclip, goggles, and hoses connecting the canister and mouthpiece. When needed in an emergency, the miner removes the outer protective cover and dons the unit. For both devices oxygen is immediately available once the mouthpiece is placed in the mouth. These two new units have received prototype approval from the National Institute for Occupation and Safety Health (NIOSH) and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA).

"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

As part of its efforts to maximize resource recovery, the Bureau of Mines conducted studies to recover valuable byproducts from Western phosphate beneficiation tailings. Potential byproducts include phosphorus, vanadium, and uranium. The objective was to determine roasting and leaching conditions for maximum dissolution of vanadium from tailings containing approximately 13 pct P205 and 0.23 pct V. Sulfuric acid leaching tests were conducted with the tailings either as a dilute suspension dried, or in a roasted condition with or without NaCl added during roasting. More than 90 pct of the vanadium was dissolved by roasting at 850° C for 120 min with 8-pct NaCl and leaching at 75°C for 120 min with an excess of 2N H2S04, By roasting without NaCl and avoiding the difficulties of the chloride impurity, nearly 80-pct vanadium dissolution was achieved with an 800° C roast for 180 min. Quadratic regression equations were derived to relate vanadium dissolution to roasting and leaching conditions.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. The data obtained from this study cover test areas that are gassy to ultragassy and pillared areas of different sizes and degrees of tightness. The methods of controlling ventilation, applying bleeders, and supporting bleeder entries varied in the different test areas. It was not possible to study all conditions likely to be encountered in coal mines. Undoubtedly, there are areas where bleeder entries, even though properly planned and maintained, might prove unsatisfactory. However, on the basis of this study, the following observations were made: 1. Tests showed that each bleeder system studied provided some movement of air through the pillared area; the quantities of air delivered to the pillar line, ranged from 23 to 82 percent, depending mainly on the extent to which bleeder re-turns were used as main returns from the section. 2. Pressure measurements taken across pillared areas showed maximum pressure drops ranging from 0.05 inch of water for a shallow gob to 2.69 inches for a very deep gob. The pressure differentials varied with the size and tightness of the gob but proved adequate to induce airflow across worked-out areas or through fringes of the gob to the bleeder return system.

Significant effects of in-the-mill drying on the pulverization of lignite have been demonstrated in an experimental impact-type pulverizer by tests in which the primary variable was temperature of the sweeping gas. Reduced power requirements and increased product fineness were observed as the extent of drying was increased. Pulverization with in-the-mill drying was studied in comparative tests made on lignites from five mine sources. All of the lignites responded in a similar manner; however, differences in the pulverizing characteristics of the individual lignites were significant. For one lignite, the electrical input to the pulverizer driving motor with minimum sweeping-gas temperature was 33.9 kw.-hr. per ton, decreasing to 14.0 kw.-hr. per ton with a sweeping-gas temperature of 658° F.; for another lignite, at comparable operating conditions, the electrical input decreased from 59.1 to 19.0 kw.-hr. per ton. In the first case, the product fineness increased with increasing temperature of sweeping gas from 65.2 to 79.2 percent through a 200-mesh sieve, and in the second case, from b2.7 to 86.9 percent through a 200-mesh sieve.

A study of the flotation characteristics of columbium-tantalum minerals was made by contact-angle and microflotation methods, and the findings were confirmed by flotation of two natural ores. In the contact-angle study conditions for collection of columbite, pyrochlore, and tantalite were determined for (1) sodium oleate with a sulfonate; (2) sodium isooctyl phosphate; (3) a short-chain primary amine; (4) a long-chain primary amine; and (5) a quaternary amine. These conditions were confirmed in microflotation tests. Information about collector action on common gangue minerals was also obtained by these two methods. In batch flotation tests on a pyrochlore ore and a columbite ore, it was demonstrated that collectors selected on the basis of contact-angle and micro-flotation studies would float columbium minerals from a complex natural ore. However, multiple cleaner and scavenger flotation steps will be necessary to produce commercial concentrates. From a pyrochlore ore containing 0.54 percent Cb2O5, a 44.4 percent Cb2O5 concentrate was made containing 36.4 percent of the total Cb2O5. For a columbite are the corresponding values were: 4.35, 54.6, and 67.1 percent. During the batch flotation study, wetting agents were found to aid in the gangue-ore mineral separations.

Stabiity analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this US. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

The Anson Bette manganese mine, with two prominent manganese-bearing outcrops in schist, has attracted considerable attention for its variety of manganese minerals and its possibilities as a potential source of manganese. Little mining was done prior to 1925, when the present owner acquired the property, and operations since that date have been intermittent. Mine workings are open cuts with a maximum depth of 35 feet. The two outcropping ore deposits are irregular, pipelike bodies about 500 feet apart. As nothing was known of the grade or extent of mineralization in depth, four holes totaling 1,072.5 feet of bore Were diamond-drilled by the Bureau of Mines in the summer of 1943, with the results shown in figures 3 to 6. In.1945 a geophysical survey was run to map the magnetic anomalies in the manganese-bearing belt as a means of determining the locations of manganese deposits. Positive correlation of magnetite and manganese ore was not obtained.
