System objectives and design criteria for an in-mine ULF radio paging system are discussed. Coding formats, frequency and bandwidth selection criteria leading to the system design are discussed. The prototype call alert transmitter and pocket page receiver is functionally described. The report includes circuit descriptions, schematics, parts lists, printed circuit fabrication and assembly drawings. The report concludes with an estimate of the manufacturing cost for each assembly.

"INTRODUCTION The method of differential thermal analysis suggested by Le Chatelier (1)1 in 1887 has recently emerged as an outstanding means of studying the constitution of various substances, particularly clays, soils, and miscellaneous hydrous materials (2). The literature ably discusses the applications and results obtained but has paid too little attention to specific details of construction of the apparatus. Knowledge of the apparatus is of importance to the experienced research man as is extremely useful to the novice v ho ventures into this field of analysis. Further, it is generally acknowledged that the variations in design and conditions of operation are one of the essential causes for differences in characteristic temperatures as reported by various investigators. A step forward in the elimination of such differences is the publication of the details of construction and operation of a simple and inexpensive apparatus that has proved useful at the southern Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, where it was used in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala."

This paper , describing the operation of the Ward Sand and Gravel Co.'s plant at Oxford , Mich . , is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing sand and gravel throughout the United States . These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used . The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs . It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole . On the other hand , operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed . The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue . The plant described is a dredging operation with many unique features ; especially noteworthy are the mining of the sand and gravel with hydraulic jets operating on the principle of a water ejector , the unusual construction of the dredge and the self- unloading barges that tend it , the transportation of the sand and gravel to shore in barges instead of in pipe lines , the large storage capacity of the plant , and the fact that all material goes into storage before being shipped .

This report revises an earlier publication by the Bureau of Mines on tungsten analytical procedures and expands the coverage by including appropriate procedures for the critical impurity elements that commonly occur in tungsten ores and concentrates (13).3 The basic methods described are not original, but many of the modifications to improve reliability and sensitivity were developed by the Bureau. Gravimetric and colorimetric methods currently used for the determination of tungsten in ores, mill tailings, and concentrates are described. Colorimetric procedures are preferred for low concentrations of tungsten, whereas either procedure is satisfactory for moderate concentrations. Conversely, a gravimetric method is preferred for the determination of tungsten in concentrates.

A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.

One of the broad purposes of the Bureau of' Mines since its establishment has been conservation of mineral resources. As some of the coal beds approach depletion, especially those coals suitable for making metallurgical coke, more and more attention is being given to means of recovering a larger percentage of coal in place. The customary system of mining in the United States is by room and pillar, or some variation thereof, which leaves pillars of coal to support, the roof. In many operations, where the pillars are not systematically recovered, the loss of coal often amounts to 50 percent or more of the original deposit. In many instances in developing new mines, It is planned to recover chain and barrier pillars on retreat when the mine has reached established boundaries. Too often, however, mines are abandoned for some unforeseen reason before completion of mining without recovering any pillars. Usually, these pillars are lost forever. With this in mind, the Mining Division, Region VIII, of the Bureau; of Mines is encouraging mining by longwall methods. It is a generally known fact that almost all of the European coal is mined by longwall methods, which are conducive to a high percentage recovery of coal. A comparison between mining systems usually is on the basis of tons per man per shift. Unless all operating conditions are similar, such a comparison could be misleading. Generally, the output per man shift in European longwall mines is less than that obtained in room-and-pillar mining in the United States. In European mining, maximum recovery of coal is not only mandatory but it must be accomplished without major damage to surface by subsidence. These restrictions necessitate packing or stowing with consequential increases In manpower and decreases in output per man shift.

The vapor pressures of liquid columbium and liquid hafnium were deter-mined by the Langmuir free evaporation method as a part of the Bureau of Mines program on the study of transition metals. An electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible was used for melting. Temperature was measured with a two-color ratio pyrometer. Least-squares analyses of the vapor pres-sure data gave the following equations: [Logp (atm) = 5 .429 -31,310 T] for liquid columbium in the range 2,740° - 3,140° K, and [Log p (atm) = 5,690 28 T] for liquid zirconium in the range 2,500° -2,810° K. Third-law evaluations of each data set gave mean heats of sublimation (298.15° K) of 175.1±3.2 kcal/mole and 148.3±1.2 kcal/mole for columbium and hafnium, respectively. Second-law standard heats of sublimation determined from sigma plots and from sigma-prime plots agreed fairly well with the third-law values. The sigma-prime plots gave standard entropies of sublimation of 30.96±0.84 eu and 33.S6±0.44 eu for columbium and hafnium, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (WIDCO), evaluated the dewatering of fine coal-refuse slurry using chemicals and various types and combinations of drains in natural earth impoundments. About 40 lb of lime and 2 lb of polymer per ton of dry solids were mixed with the underflow from the preparation-plant thickener. Clear, free water was immediately liberated from the slurry. The percent solids by weight of the slurry increased from about 17 to 30 immediately, and after 5 days increased to 45 wt-pct. This indicates a threefold reduction in total volume after 5 days from 172 cu ft/ton solids originally to 56 cu ft/ton solids.

The facts are generally accepted that an atmosphere containing large quantities of any dust is objectionable to breathe and that some dusts are more dangerous than others. Therefore, knowledge of the com-position of dusts is important in evaluating the hazard entailed on exposure. At present, free silica, of which quartz is the most abundant form, is considered one of the most significant dusts, from the standpoint of pneumoconiosis, and one State5/ has established permissible limits of air dustiness on the basis of the free-silica content of rock. The amount 06 free silica in materials used for rock dusting also has been limited.6/ Determination of free silica or quartz, therefore, is important.

A primary amine extraction system was investigated for fractionating a cerium-group, lanthanide sulfate mixture. Addition of diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (DTPA) to the amine extraction system resulted in separation factors as high as 5.4 for lanthanum-cerium, 8.0 for cerium-praseodymium, 3.7 for praseodymium-neodymium, and 7.0 for neodymium-samarium. In multistage studies on a cerium-free lanthanide mixture, 96 percent of the lanthanum was recovered with a purity of 95 percent.

Reduce costs of recontouring surface mined land by improving bulldozer blades. Approach A specialized 48-foot-wide bulldozer blade set at an angle, a 13-foot bulldozer blade with swept-forward end sections, and a 24-foot grading bar are used in conjunction with conventional bulldozers to reduce the cost of recontouring surface mined land. How They Work The angle blade is used to do the initial and intermediate leveling of long spoil banks. It is mounted at an angle on two 410-horsepower crawler tractors in a side-by-side offset configuration, but requires only one operator since both tractors are controlled by a single set of controls. The angle blade usually begins its cycle at one end of the spoil bank where the operator fills the blade and moves forward, continuously cutting and casting the material to the repose slope. At the opposite end of the spall bank, the angle blade turns around and begins cut-ting and casting material to the opposite repose slope. This action continues until adjacent banks meet or the lateral distance from the center line of the spoil bank to the repose slope exceeds approximately 40 to 50 feet. At this distance, the sidecasting angle blade is no longer effective, and conventional bulldozers are used to do the final land shaping.

Coal mines that undergo self-heatings, and specifically mines that sustain both floor heave and self-heatings, would benefit from the use of sealants to minimize air ingress to susceptible areas. The U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) evaluated three sealant systems for this purpose, bentonite-water mixtures, silicate gel, and guar gum gel. The guar gum-based gel was the only sealant that possessed the desired properties of elasticity, ease of preparation, adaptability to the mine, and a long life. In addition, since the gel consists mostly of water, it could quench or cool nearby heatings. Optimal formulations were determined in laboratory tests, and then tested in the USBM Safety Research Coal Mine. Two formulations resulted in stable gels that lasted for at least 12 months in the mine. Semi continuous preparation of gel using an eductor was evaluated and appears feasible. Although guar gum gel is expensive, selective use to prevent heatings in specific areas would be cost-effective, both interms of productivity and enhanced mine safety.

To meet a growing need for thorium metal of high purity and amenability to fabrication, the Bureau of Mines devised a method for preparing thorium metal by the reduction of thorium tetrachloride. Thorium tetrachloride was prepared by chlorinating calcined thorium oxalate with carbon tetrachloride. The crude thorium tetrachloride, containing oxygen-bearing compounds, was purified by a double vacuum distillation at 800 to 900° C., and thorium metal was made in the form of a dense sponge by the reaction of metallic sodium or magnesium with thorium tetrachloride at 800° C. Vacuum arc melting was used to consolidate the sponge metal to ingot form for evaluation of its physical and chemical properties.

The initial results from the magnetic sludge factorial experiment are summarized in Table 2. For ease in interpretation, the four separate variables are identified with the high and low level of each variable being represented by + and - signs, respectively. Several important relationships are evident from an inspection of the data in Table 2. For example, magnetic sludges were obtained only during the high temperature tests. Secondly, with the exception of the last three tests, there is an apparent correlation between settled sludge volume (or sludge settling rate) and pH. Data on residual dissolved Fee+ indicate that precipitation of iron is not complete at pH 8 and room temperature (Tests l, 3, 5, and 7). Although this should not have any confounding effect on the interpretation of the results, it is an important observation and an aspect of the overall conceptual process that should be considered carefully during any future developmental work. The data in Table 2 were employed more fully in the calculation of main effects and variable interactions for each of the three responses. For this purpose, a codified design and calculation matrix, shown in Table 3, was used. The derivation of this matrix is described by Davies.(9) The positive or negative signs for variable interactions are obtained simply by algebraic multiplication of the signs for each single variable involved in the interaction. Main effects and interactions are calculated by multiplying the response values (Table 2) by the corresponding effect elements (Table 3), summing the results, and dividing by 8. The resulting value for single variables is also sometimes designated as an average effect, since (for tyro levels of the variable only) it is simply the difference between the average response of all trials carried out at the first level of the variable (factor) and that of all trials at the second level. If the effect of one variable changes at different levels of another variable, the two variables are said to interact. The relative importance of the variable or variables in question is reflected by the absolute magnitude of the calculated main effect or interaction. First-order (two variable) interactions are usually easy to interpret in terms of the physical behavior of the system. Second- and higher-order interactions are often less readily understood, and are often of minor significance in any case. The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .

This report sterns from a study undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the possibility of reducing filter-cake moisture by applying radiant heat. Suitable laboratory equipment was set up to study the effect of heat, heating time, proximity of the heater to the filter cake, cake thickness, and other variables related to the final filter-cake moisture. A minus-48-mesh coal slurry and application of heat for 60 seconds resulted in filter-cake moistures 5.6 to 13.2 percentage points lower than could be accomplished by filtration alone at 24 inches of Hg for 1-1/4-and 1 1/2-inch cake thickness, respectively. The moisture reduction can be attributed to the combined effect of lower fluid viscosity and evaporation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of organic binders as substitutes for bentonite in agglomerating iron ore concentrate. Over 30 organic binders were evaluated at several dosage levels in laboratory tests. The binder groups producing the greatest green pellet strengths were natural gums (guars carboxyl methyl celluloses) and gelled starches. The nongelled and alkalized starches, starch acrylic copolymers) wood-related products, and dairy products were less effective but better than bentonite. The highest wet pellet drop numbers were obtained with binders that had a medium plate water absorption value (>500 and <10)000) in distilled water and a high slurry viscosity (>75 cP) at 6 pet solids. The highest dry compressive strengths were obtained with binders that gave the highest adhesive tensile strength (>4 kg/ cm2) on iron oxide lap-joint substrates. Pellets with 0.1 pct organic binder had lower compressive strengths and reduction disintegration indices than those with 1 pct bentonite, but higher reduction rates. Pellets with carboxyl methyl cellulose and gelled starch had higher softening temperatures than those with bentonite. Overall, the most promising binder is gelled starch. Its price makes it more cost effective than carboxyl methyl cellulose, and its pellets have metallurgical properties superior to those of bentonite pellets.

It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world&apos;s sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists&apos; Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. This Bureau of Mines report presents a method for the computer solution of the equilibrium compositions of any complex, multiphase, chemical system for which appropriate thermodynamic data are available. The method describes in detail the computation of systems in which solid or liquid species can form by heterogeneous chemical reactions where these species do not occur in any equilibrium equations. Also described are the calculation of phases formed by condensation (pure or solutions) and the inclusion of other system restrictions such as electroneutrality. The method is being used to compute the equilibrium composition of mixtures of an electrically conductive plasma and a liquid slag phase arising from the high-temperature combustion of coal for magnetohydrodynamic power generation. These mixtures can contain up to 65 species including gases, liquids, free electrons, and ions.

Domestic expenditures by the U.S. petroleum industry have exhibited distinctive shifts in emphasis over the past 20 years. From the end of World War II to 1955, expenditures for all phases of the industry expanded. Although over one-half of all expenditures were for production, the relative emphasis was changed after 1956-58 from production toward processing and marketing. The period 1967-69 marked the beginning of a return to emphasis on exploration and production. These trends in expenditure patterns are logical and rational when related to domestic and international economic conditions and to the widespread application of improved production technology. As the immense job of developing the oil resources of Alaska and other regions begins, the petroleum industry will continue to turn to external sources for working capital. Long-term debt will probably be the principal method of external financing through 1970, but a definite shift toward new common and preferred stocks will be made. Higher product prices may be sought by the petroleum industry, but the economics of crude-oil production, changes in the tax structure, and possible changes in the oil imports control program make the price structure of crude oil and crude-oil products unpredictable at the present time.
