Regrinding rougher flotation concentrates has become a common practice when processing low grade and complex ores. It not only reduces the particle size and improves mineral liberation but also modifies particle surfaces and pulp chemistry due to the strong electrochemical reactions taking place during regrinding. Therefore, the floatability of minerals in the subsequent cleaner flotation is influenced by the regrinding conditions. This paper presents the effect of regrinding conditions on the mineral floatability from both industrial studies in the plant and fundamental studies in the laboratory. Different regrinding conditions were considered, including grinding media, the electrochemical properties of minerals, pulp chemistry (pH, Eh, DO), and breakage mechanisms in tumbling and stirred mills. Results indicate that the selection of regrinding conditions and mill types should not only depend on grinding energy efficiency and liberation but also depend on the surface properties and pulp chemistry produced for effective mineral flotation and separation at the cleaner stage.

"Acid leaching in agitated tanks is central to hydrometallurgical processing for valuable metals’ (e.g., copper, gold, nickel and cobalt) recovery from low grade (e.g., < 2 wt.%) ores. In this study, atmospheric leaching behaviour of Australian saprolitic nickel (Ni) laterite ore using sulfuric acid was investigated under isothermal, batch conditions at pH 1. The effect of primary process variables comprising time (4 h) and temperature (70 and 95 oC) on the leaching mechanisms and kinetics was established for -2 mm, low grade (~1 % Ni) saprolitic ore dispersions at 40 wt.% solid loading. Leaching proceeded incongruently, reflecting the proliferation of gangue minerals’ constituent elements (e.g., Mg, Al, Fe) alongside Ni and Co in the pregnant leach solutions (PLS). Subsequent analysis showed that 89% Ni and 78% Co were extracted after 4 h at 95 oC whilst at 70 oC the recoveries of these metals were markedly low (< 25 %). Overall, 177 and 644 kg H2SO4 /t dry ore were consumed at 70 and 95 oC, respectively. Activation energy of 79.0 ±1.0 kJ/mol was estimated for the mechanism of Ni and Co leaching and associated kinetics. Particles size analyses indicated that when the breakage of frail laterite particles due to shear is taken into consideration, differences in feed and leached product particle size distributions were insignificant , despite a remarkable increase in BET specific surface area of the product. Mineralogical analyses of the feed ore and leached solid products revealed a sub-crystalline silica phase enrichment of the latter. The overall results suggest that the mechanism of acid leaching of saprolitic Ni laterite may be described by a chemical reaction-controlled, shrinking core model."

Coal Water Mixtures (CWMs) are densed suspensions of coal particles in water. Viscosity is one of the most important rheological properties of CWMs and it is desired to be as low as possible. The slurry viscosity was influenced significantly by additive formation, the particle size distribution and the ash content of the coal. However, the influence of dispersants is most obvious. At present, there are several kinds of dispersants such as polymeric styrene sulfuric sodium, lignin sulfonate, humate, polycarboxy salt, ethylene epoxide surfactant. In this paper, a newly synthesized CWM dispersant has been reported, which is an efficient anionic surfactants of polycarboxylic acid type. The synthesis process includes three steps. At the beginning, the polyglycol acetate ester has been performed by acetic acid and polyethylene glycol (PEO) on the condition of acetic-acid/PEO ratio 1:1.1, at 368~373K for 30 minutes. Then the macro-monomer is prepared through the esterification of 85.71% acrylic and 14.29% polyglycol acetate ester, at 368~373K for 10 minutes. After that, the polycarboxylic acid CWM dispersant is polymerized using proper proportion macro-monomer, acrylic (AA) and sulfonic styrol sodium, at 368~373K for 1 hour. This new dispersants are used in the coal water mixtures formulation. Four kinds of coal used in the experiment are Shuang Yashan, Tunliu, Luning, Changcun samples. ? The highest concentration for shuanyashan coal is 70% when the dosage of dispersant is 0.4%, and the content of -200 meshes particles is 75.53%. As the dosage of dispersant de-creases to 0.25%, the Shangyashan CWM concentration is 67%. ? For Tunliu coal CWM concentrations are in the range of 76% to 75% when dosage of the dispersant changes from 0.4% to 0.25% at the same particle size distribution of 83.5% minus 200 meshes. ? The highest concentration for Luning coal is 69% when dosage of the dispersant is 0.4%, and the content of -200 meshes particles is 88.86%. ? For Changcun sample, the coal concentration of CWM is 73%~75% when dosage range of the dispersant is 0.35%~0.5%. The experiments show that the synthesied dispersant is quite promising for some coals CWM preparation, but a little bit coal-dependent. The Proximate and Ultimate analysis, surface characteristic measurement have been made to investigate the interactions between coal and additives.

The bioremediation of zinc was carried out using Pseudomonas alcaligenes, a Gram negative heterotroph. The parameters such as pH, bacterial cell number, initial metal concentration, and interaction time on the biosorption of zinc were studied. The maximum zinc uptake was found to be about 95% at pH 5 and biomass loading of 2.7x1010cells/mL. The biosorption isotherm for zinc exhibited Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy of biosorption was determined to be -31.2 kJ/mol, indicative of coordination of zinc with the functional groups on the bacterial surface. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order equation. FTIR and EDAX studies confirmed the interaction of zinc with the biomass. The mechanisms of metal-microbe interactions are discussed.

The bioremediation capability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells was investigated for the biosorption of lead ions from aqueous solution. The various parameters such as pH, kinetics, biomass loading and concentration of lead affecting the biosorption process were studied. Complete bio removal of lead could be achieved for an initial concentration of 12.4 mg/L at pH 6.2, corresponding to typical industrial effluents. The biosorption isotherm followed Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy (?G) was determined to be-30.8 kJ/mole, indicative of chemisorption between the functional groups of the bacterial surface and lead. The biosorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second order model. The possible mechanisms of interaction of lead with the bacterial cells are discussed. A carbon paste electrode with a coating of biomass was developed for lead ion detection in aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetric technique. Concentrations of lead up to 5x10-5 M could be successfully detected using cyclic voltammetry, which could be improved to a detection limit of 1x10-8 M adopting differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The reactivity of clay minerals and variety of these reactions are greater than any other known colloidal material. While it is acknowledged that clay minerals can cause problems in mineral flotation, the literature contains conflicting evidence, particularly with respect to the effect of clays on froth stability. It is well known that achieving and maintaining optimum froth stability is an influential factor in determining froth flotation performance. However, the presence of clay minerals in the ore is a major challenge to obtaining a stable froth. In fact, clay minerals could reduce froth flotation performance by both decreasing and increasing froth stability. The mechanism by which clay minerals affect froth stability is not fully understood and needs to be investigated further. In order to improve flotation performance, reliable knowledge of the effect of clay minerals on froth stability is essential which is discussed in this paper. This paper describes some advances in flotation research in fines (“F” 38 to 13 µm) and ultrafines (“UF” < 13 µm) mineral recovery by two different techniques, at laboratory scale. Extender flotation and flotation with .multi-bubbles. (bubbles with a wide size distribution) of copper sulphide fines (ore feed of about 1 % Cu) were compared with a .standardised. mill laboratory procedure. Comparative evaluation was made through concentrate grade and recovery (size by size results included), .true. (bubbles-particles attachment only) flotation recoveries and process kinetics. Both techniques yielded higher metallurgical efficiencies than the mill standard but better results were obtained with the extender flotation, with emulsified diesel oil (90 gt-1). Concentrate recoveries were of the order of 85-90 % (84 % in standard conditions), 14-17 % Cu grade (15 % Cu in the standard) and 3.5-4.5 min-1 for the Klimpel rate constant (3 min-1 in the standard). Size by size and true flotation results proved that metallurgical and kinetic gains, obtained with the two techniques, might be attributed to fines and ultrafines enhancement. Data obtained are discussed in terms of physical and physico-chemical parameters related to aggregation and capture (of particles by bubbles) phenomena and the practical potential of these techniques are envisaged.

This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. "Steam Pressure Filtration (SPF) is a modified cake filtration process and is characterized by both washing and excellent de-watering of the filter cake. Compared to conventional gas differential pressure filtration, the filter cake is treated with saturated or superheated steam replacing pressurized air. Invented in the early last century, Steam Pressure Filtration has reached technical maturity in the 1990ies for inorganic particle systems, fine chemicals and coal. Especially the de-watering performance for fine particles systems below 50 µm make Steam Pressure Filtration an excellent option for the processing of fine tailings streams, to produce a stable material, which can be described by the methods of solids mechanics instead of paste rheology. The washing, which is due to the condensing steam, is able to reduce the ion load of the solid. This additional effect is able to generate a dry tailings material, which shows a reduced leaching potential of mobile ions, which originally derive from the process water. INTRODUCTION Steam Pressure Filtration is a process concept especially of hyperbaric filtration, which started its market entry in the 1990ies (Bott 1996, Bott 2002). Even though there have been many attempts to apply steam on filters before, the success story began with the combination of hyperbaric filtration and steam application and the technical solution to limit the steam treatment to a defined zone on the filter. This resulted from the scientific findings that steam mainly enhances the de-watering during the mechanical filtration (Gerl 1999). There are no or minor positive effects of steam application to a filtration process during cake filtration and after the steam breakthrough has occurred. Furthermore that time a sufficient control technology to regulate the steam consumption as well as suitable filter cloths became available. There is a growing need for de-watering technology in the mining industry, not only for the concentrate but also for the tailings streams. Several reasons argue against the established solution of damping the tails as suspension or paste into tailings ponds. There are ecological, political, societal and economic reasons, which question the tailings ponds more and more. Due to the increasing costs in the building and monitoring of tailings dams, which contain the tailing ponds, the concept of dry stocking using filtration technology comes into the game (Jansson 2016). Dry stocking converts the tailings stream form the suspension or paste state, into a material, which can be stockpiled. The latter typically is a moist flowable disperse particle system. The conversion involves a de-watering step, in which different types of filter equipment can be used, e.g. filter presses, membrane filter presses, automatic press filters or hyperbaric filters. For coarse products also vacuum filter can be applied. Due to its excellent de-watering performance and the easy scale-up properties Steam Pressure Filtration is further option for dry tailings stacking."

In this paper, the results emerging from the several basic and applied studies performed to provide fundamental understanding of the interplay between clay pulp chemistry, orthokinetic flocculation performance, particle interactions, applied shear and dewaterability of fine clay mineral dispersions are presented, reconciled, and discussed. Modification of pulp chemistry and behaviour was achieved by using kaolinite and Na-exchanged (swelling) smectite clay minerals, divalent metal ions (Ca(II), Mn(II)) as coagulants and high molecular weight, anionic polyacrylamide copolymers: carboxylate substituted (PAM A) and 2-amido 2-methyl propane sulphonate (PAM S) (PAM S), non-ionic polyacrylamide homopolymer (PAM N) and non-conventional, non-ionic polyethylene oxide (PEO) as flocculants. Clear links between pulp interfacial chemistry, particle interactions and dewatering behaviour, resulting from the influence of hydrolyzable metal ion, pH, temperature, polymer structure type and shear, are established. Optimum conditions for improved, orthokinetic flocculation performance of negatively charged clay particles, reflecting faster settling flocs (>10 m/h) comprised: (i) coagulation, (ii) moderate agitation rate, (iii) shorter agitation time and (iv) anionic rather than non-ionic PAM. The optimum flocculation conditions did not, however, have a significant impact on the final sediment solid content of 20 ? 25 wt%. Further application of shear to pre-sedimented pulps improved consolidation by 5 - 15 wt % solid. Application of the findings and new knowledge gained to real plant tails? case studies for marked improvement in dewaterability through thickening is demonstrated.

The simulation study on the process of iron ore beneficiation plant of Essar Steel, Kirandul was carried out. The iron ore fines and slimes generated nearby Bailadila mines of NMDC are used as raw materials for this beneficiation plant. The capacity of the plant is 1400 TPH operating in parallel in two streams. The capacity of the plant was utilized about 60% of throughput capacity. To improve the plant capacity as well as quality performance, the simulation study was conducted to detect the bottleneck of the process. The process samples were collected from input and output of each processing unit operation to generate the data base for simulation study at the feed rate of 400 and 500 TPH of iron ore fines in a single stream. The characteristics data i.e., breakage and selection functions were generated using MILLSOFT package for simulation of ball mills. Then MODSIM package was used to evaluate the performance of each unit operation to identify the bottleneck. It was established by a simulation study that the intermediate thickener draws high current when the feed rate is more than 400 TPH due to high torque drawn by rotating rake because of presence of coarse particles in the input stream to thickener. The problem was sorted out by classification of input stream of thickener to remove the coarse particles. Then the process was simulated at its rated capacity, and experimental validation studies at the plant were also conducted at the feed capacity of 600 and 700 TPH by modification of process flowsheet. The experimental data was almost matching with simulated data. Finally, the processing plant is running with full rated capacity without any bottleneck. Molybdenite flotation is strongly depressed at pH higher than 9.5 in the flotation of Cu-Mo ores in sea water. Chemically sea water contains mainly Na+ and Cl- ions, but also some secondary ions, such as SO42-, Mg2+; Ca2+, HCO3-; etc., which are not necessarily indifferent for the flotation of molybdenite. The natural floatability of molybdenite in sea water and in NaCl solutions containing different secondary ions is investigated by micro-flotation tests. The tests indicate that the floatability of molybdenite in alkaline media in 0.6 M NaCl solutions is not affected by the presence of anions, such as, SO42- and HCO3-, at concentrations similar to those occurring in sea water. However, a strong depression of molybdenite at pH ranging from 9.5-10.0, is produced by the alkaline earth metal cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions), dissolved in distilled water or in 0.6M NaCl solutions. It was found that effect of Mg2+ions is significantly stronger than Ca2+ ions. Effect of both ions is attributed to hydrolysis and adsorption of MOH+ hydroxy-complexes. This is followed by subsequent precipitation of hydrophilic colloidal hydroxides at the molybdenite/solution interface, and in bulk solution.

On the basis of detailed studying of mineral structure of ore and treatment products it is established that the given ore refers to oxidized Pb-Zn vein-disseminated ores. Technological special features of the basic ore minerals and the reasons causing their obstinateness that is defined by following features are revealed, presence at dominating quantity difficult to float lead minerals: mimetesite (9.67%), green lead ore(0.48%); non float: bindheimite (2.16%) and plumbojarosite (0.36%) and high assay of oxides and hydrous ferric oxides; also thin, emulsive and submicroscopic segregations of the defined minerals in swamp ore. As a result of researches the scheme of gravitational-flotation treatment was conducted in semi-industrial scale. It allows to receive two concentrates from ore: a lead gravitational concentrate of mark ??-4 with the assay of 55.5 % of Pb and 0.77 % of Zn; and a Pb concentrate of mark ??-7 with assay of Pb of 40.97 % and Zn of 1.39 %. The total assay of Pb in concentrates makes 81 %. The efficiency offered by gravitational-flotation schemes is defined by possibility for recovery of big impregnated lead minerals under gravitation. The use of this method of gravitation has allowed to recover such mineral as beudantide and to exclude irrevocable losses of lead in tails which are connected with this mineral. Scientific value of the presented researches is connected with the fact the problem of extraction of the oxidized minerals of Bb and Zn is rather difficult and insufficiently studied. "Issues concerning effectiveness of the high-pressure comminution process in technological circuits of copper ore treatment were presented in the paper. Crushing processes taking place in high-pressure grinding rolls devices (HPGR) are currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore size reduction in terms of the energy consumption. The HPGR products are characterized by a fine particle size and the micro-cracks formation in individual particles, which appear in downstream grinding processes, decreasing their energy consumption. The purpose of this paper was to analyse the effectiveness of a ball mill grinding process depending on the changeable conditions of run for the HPGR crushing process. The research programme carried out included crushing tests in the laboratory scale HPGR device at various settings of the operating pressure volume and selected qualitative properties of the feed material (i.e. particle size distribution). Particle size distribution analyses of all HPGR products were performed and in the next stage the material was a feed to the ball mill grinding process. Grinding process kinetics were investigated through the determination of mass recoveries of individual particle size fractions after defined grinding time intervals. The models, defining the grinding process effectiveness as a function of changeable conditions of HPGR process run, were determined on the basis of obtained results. Based on these models the optimal grinding time in a ball mill was specified which is, in turn, the basis for optimization of operation of the technological comminution circuits for a given material type. The obtained results proved that the application of HPGR devices in a given copper ore comminution circuit may improve the effectiveness of the downstream grinding process which leads to improvement of the entire circuit work efficiency through decreasing the process energy consumption and enhancing product size reduction."

The possibility to develop an efficient recovery and reuse of concrete materials from Demolition Waste (DW) represents one of the main targets applied to end-of-life constructions dismantling/recycling. The need to recycle end-of life concrete materials is strongly increasing in these last years for several reasons: i) the decrease of steady supplies of good quality natural aggregates, ii) the need to secure ample supplies of concrete aggregates to the construction industry and, finally, iii) the environmental constraints limiting the DW wastes disposal. The fulfilment of these goals produces several benefits, that is: i) a reduction of new resources consumption, ii) a strong reduction of the costs linked to transport and energy production, iii) the possibility to utilize materials, otherwise lost (e.g. land filled), iv) land preservation and, finally, v) the reduction of the environmental impact of new exploitation activities. A lot of efforts have been addressed to develop, set-up and apply innovative technologies to maximize DW conversion into useful secondary raw materials. The possibility to utilize efficient, reliable and low cost analytical tools to perform detection/control actions: i) to assess concrete characteristics, before demolition, and ii) to detect the presence of contaminants in coarse aggregates (e.g. bricks, gypsum, steel, glass, plastics, wood, etc.) represent the key issues to fulfil in order to develop innovative process/control actions/procedures inside the DW sector. In this paper a new technology, based on HyperSpectral Imaging (HSI) sensors is investigated to develop suitable and low cost strategies finalised to define and implement innovative smart detection engines for sorting and/or DW flow stream quality control, addressed to perform recovered materials and/or products certification. The proposed sensing architecture is fast, accurate, affordable and it can strongly contribute to bring down the economic threshold above which recycling is cost efficient.

The aim of this research is to extract zinc from complex lead and zinc ore containing carbo- silicate lead and zinc minerals using sulphuric acid. Samples, taken from Dareh Zanjireh mine located in central of Iran, were subjected to leaching tests after calcination process. Experiments were planed according to the Taguchi statistical method. The calcinated samples contain 13.98% zinc and the constituting minerals being dolomite and zincate. Various parameters such as speed of mixing, temperature, time, solid to liquid ratio and pH were studied. A solid to liquid ratio of 1:6 gr/mL at 60°C and 800 rpm speed of mixing for 30 minutes resulted in a product with 85.96% zinc recoveries.

"The effect of EPS components namely protein, polysaccharide and biosurfactant purified from Pseudomonas fluorescens was investigated for the bioremediation of Pb(II) ions in aqueous solution. Two parameters, namely the amount of EPS component and the concentration of Pb(II) ions were optimized for maximum Pb(II) ions uptake. The EPS components interacted with Pb(II) ions were characterized using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) to ascertain the presence of Pb and by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) to reveal the functional groups involved in Pb(II) binding. The maximum Pb(II) binding capacities of protein, polysaccharide and biosurfactant were found to be 11.4, 0.55 and 0.11 mg mg-1 respectively. The biosorption processes followed the Langmuir model. The Gibbs free energy (?G0) values of -23.6, -20.9 and -23.2 kJ mol-1 for Pb(II) biosorption by protein, polysaccharide and biosurfactant respectively, attested to spontaneous, chemisorption processes. The ATR–FTIR results revealed the presence and involvement of amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl, phosphate, and methyl functional groups in Pb(II) binding and EDAX analysis confirmed the interaction of Pb with EPS components. The Pb(II) binding mechanisms of EPS have been discussed. The results demonstrate the potential of the purified EPS components of P. fluorescens for removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution INTRODUCTION Waste water containing toxic metals from various industries pose a serious threat to human health and ecosystem. For treating such waste water, conventional methods like chemical precipitation, coagulation, evaporative recovery, electrodialysis, floatation, flocculation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration are used (Lakherwal et al., 2014). These methods have some disadvantages like toxic sludge generation, incomplete metal removal and high cost (Singh and Gadi, 2012), necessitating the search for cheaper and efficient alternative methods. Bioremediation is one of the emerging alternatives where bacteria, fungi, yeast, algae and other biological substances are used as sorbents to remove toxic heavy metals (Vijayaraghavan, et al., 2015). Recently, the bioremediation potential of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of microbial origin has attracted attention. However, for Pb(II) removal, there is a paucity of literature focusing on EPS."

Biohydrometallurgical studies were performed on the sulfide gold-arsenic concentrate obtained in treatment of refractory ore from a deposit located in northern Russia. Gold is disseminated in sulfides-arsenopyrite, pyrite and antimonite (their content is 10.0%, 30.4% and 0.7%, respectively). Gold extraction is only 11.8% by cyanidation. Results are given for test bacterial oxidation of the concentrate in continuous mode at temp. = 28~32°C using mesophilic bacteria and at temp. = 32~38°C using the association including moderate thermophilic bacteria. The paper shows that the use of moderate thermophilic bacteria allows to speed up sulfide biooxidation and reduce its time to 96 hours compared to leaching at temp. = 28~32°C for 110~120 hours. The optimal range of pH = 1.5~2.0 of biooxidation process was determined where bacterial solutions are produced with the molar ratio Fe:As > 3 necessary for precipitation of hard-to-solve, environmentally safe arsenical precipitates. Electron microscopy showed that sulfide biooxidation results in liberation of disseminated gold with nanoparticle-level sizes. High sorptive activity of carbonaceous matter and other compounds of bacterial residues cause low gold extraction into cyanide solution ? 28.7%. 10% resin load makes it possible to extract 88.1% Au. Aeration of pulp in calcareous medium enhances extraction to 95.7% and decreases cyanide consumption from 17kg/t to 8 kg/t.

"UG2 chromitite ore is a complex, highly disseminated platinum ore from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, with typical platinum group mineral (PGM) grain sizes below 15µm. The introduction of stirred mills to the platinum industry has enabled grinding to finer product sizes, which has improved liberation and recovery of the finely grained PGMs. However, reduction in particle size leads to an increase in chromite entrainment in the flotation concentrate, which has a negative impact on the subsequent smelting process. Factors such as particle size, froth structure, solids concentration and water recovery have all been identified as impacting entrainment, but whether particle shape also has a significant effect is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the recovery of chromite particles by entrainment during the flotation of UG2 ore is affected by particle morphology. A laboratory vertical stirred mill with inert ceramic media was used for grinding UG2 ore which was then floated in a batch flotation cell. Flotation feed and concentrate samples were analyzed using QEMSCAN to quantify the angularity and aspect ratio distributions of the particles. The stirred mill product was found to have relatively broad aspect ratio and angularity distributions, with the major mineral components (chromite and silicates) having very similar shape characteristics. Analysis of flotation feed and concentrate samples suggested that particle shape does not have a significant effect on chromite entrainment."

"The drilling mud is an essential part of the drilling process, which plays a major role in keeping safe and efficient oil and gas well drilling. In the oil industry, bentonite clay dissolved in water produces the simplest type of drilling muds. Bentonite clay contains montmorillonite particles. These particles are dispersed uniformly in water and such dispersions are used in various industrial products like paints, ceramics, pesticides and drilling muds. The bentonite clay easily dissolves in water and increases the viscosity of the water, which is one of the most important properties of a drilling mud. Bentonite has the highest swelling capacity, which is responsible for building up of the viscosity of the clay-water system. The flocculation behavior of bentonite is one of the major concerns for the performance of the water-based drilling mud in the oil and gas well drilling process. The behavior of drilling mud greatly depends upon the quality and quantity of bentonite clay, as well as the additives that are used in their formulations. In this work, a comprehensive study has been carried out to find out the effect of added polyacrylamide (PAM) polymer, surfactant, pH and salt concentrations on the dispersion/ flocculation characteristics of bentonite clay-water system. It has been observed that the increase in PAM dosage reduces the residual turbidity and improves the settling rate of the bentonite particles. The flocculation rate has also been found to be better under higher pH conditions. If the quality of bentonite is not sufficient to accomplish intended viscosity of the muds, it is essential to add certain additives to increase the viscosity and prevent aggregation of the system (Razi et al., 2013). The anionic polymer bearing sample can build up inter-particle bonds between the polymer and clay particles. The addition of various additives like, polymers control the dispersion and enhance the viscosity of the mud by controlling the flocculation of montmorillonite particles in bentonite dispersion (Heller and Keren, 2002; Mahto and Sharma, 2004)."
