Marine Mining Inc. is currently exploring for marine alluvial gold and diamonds on a prospecting licence over a concession that covers 10,000 km2 of the continental shelf of Ghana. The boundaries of the concession extend from 0 30'W to 2 40'W, and between the shoreline and approximately the continental shelf edge north of 4 30'N. This concession extends from Kikam Beach in the west, to Senya Beraku in the east, a distance of approximately 240 km, and seaward an average of about 40 km. The concession is entirely underwater, with the exception of the estuaries of the Ankobra and Pra Rivers. Ghana has been a large source of alluvial gold, with historical production exceeding 25 million ounces. Southwestern Ghana is characterized by Precambrian rocks, which have been folded into a number of NE-SW trending synclines and anticlines. The most significant feature of the Birimian rocks is the presence of evenly spaced gold-bearing greenstone belts. They are 10-15 km wide, separated by about 90 km, separate basins filled by folded metasediments and granitoids. The rivers that enter the concession drain most of the exposed gold-bearing belts of Ghana. Given that approximately 2 km of erosion has taken place since the Mesozoic, and that gold mines on these belts boast proven reserves of over 55 million ounces, it is likely that large amounts of gold have been eroded out and carried to the sea. Coastal fractures, related to Precambrian structures reactivated during Mesozoic rifting, are responsible for the physiography of the coastal area, which consists of high-relief horsts separated by grabens that have been occupied and infilled by rivers or by finer sediments during times of elevated sea level. These fractures were loci of gold mineralization during the Precambrian, and are the source of alluvial gold in rivers confined by them.

Geochemical exploration for marine placers involves the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of geochemical data. Recent technological advances such as in-situ analysis systems and microcomputers have greatly improved our ability to acquire and process data, but their full benefits cannot be realized until we also develop improved methods for reducing and interpreting large amounts of raw geochemical data. Toward this end, our research has sought to identify existing and/or develop new geostatistical techniques for use in marine placer exploration. Each technique has been tested by evaluating its performance in the analysis of existing data sets. The data sets typically include the results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected platinum and gold placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Results to date indicate that three geostatistical methods (subpopulation partitioning analysis, comparative factor analysis, and end-member compositional factor analysis) are useful in identifying elemental groups which can serve as "pathfinders" in the search for marine placers, and are also helpful in discerning the generic geochemical basis under lying observed statistical correlations between pathfinder elements and placer minerals. The Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior and the State of Hawaii Department of Planning and Economic Development are investigating the cobalt-rich ferromanganese oxide crust deposits found within the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. The objective of this investigation is to complete a preliminary resource assessment and an Environmental Impact Statement for potential leasing of mineral rights to these crusts. The results of this effort will be summarized and published in a Draft Environmental Impact Statement in March 1986. Three oceanographic cruises to deposit sites in the Hawaiian Islands EEZ were conducted by the University of Hawaii in 1984. As a result, data and sample analysis yielded the following resource estimates (in thousand tonnes): (1) total crusts - 378,500; (2) cobalt - 2,500; (3) manganese - 76,200; (4) iron - 59,700; and (5) nickel - 1,400. These estimates do not include key factors such as deposit continuity, recoverability, and environmental sensitivity. A preliminary attempt to quantify some of these factors for one particular deposit is in progress and will consist of detailed field studies followed by laboratory analysis. Similar evaluations of the Johnston Island EEZ have also begun and are based upon field work conducted by West German researchers and the U.S. Geological Survey. The Johnston Island EEZ appears to have crust resources about as large as those contained in the entire Hawaiian EEZ.

For the past twenty years or so the oceans of the world have been transformed in the minds of most Americans from the ultimate and nearly infinite receptacles for sewage and other wastes to an almost sacrosanct and threatened last refuge of Mother Nature from man on Earth. While this general movement has helped somewhat to moderate the flows of pollutants into the oceans, it has had severe and sometimes devastating impacts upon various attempts to develop seabed mineral resources. Marine mining proposals have been easy targets for attack. In most cases, they have short or no histories and involve prototype or first-generation methods. They commonly lack major financial backing, and do not command significant public support. Their constituents are limited. Opposition movements to such proposals have been able to evoke strong support by appealing to this "last refuge" image and depicting mining operations as the final assault. In mounting these public appeals, the movements obtain visibility and support. Because of the small and sometimes tentative status of the constituencies which support particular proposal s, the potential liabilities for opposition movements are minimal.

Phosphate deposits on the southeastern U.S. coastal plain have long been the major force in world phosphate markets. World markets continue to grow, but the role of U.S. resources is rapidly declining. This situation results from a complex interaction of economic, political, and environmental factors. Causes for this ongoing erosion of the U. S. market include 1) escalating costs, 2) changes in land-use patterns, 3) environmental pressures oh conventional mining techniques; 4) exhaustion of shallow, high-grade resources in Florida, and 5) increased, low-cost production in other countries throughout the world. In fact, some agencies and commodity personnel predict that the U.S. will become a net phosphate importer early in the next century. If this projection is correct, the U.S. industry must look towards major changes in the near future in order to continue to compete in the world market. One possible change includes development and application of unconventional mining techniques to cheaply recover vast 'new' potential resources in areas with lower land-use pressures. These 'new' resources include 1) deep phosphorites within major sediment basins of the southeastern coastal plain and 2) subsurface phosphorites on the continental shelf and within the U.S. EEZ. These latter resources include extensive deposits in Onslow Bay, N.C.; broad regions offshore of Savannah, Ga. and Cape Canaveral, Fla.; and the central portion of the west Florida shelf. The United States is dependent on foreign imports for about 80 percent of its ilmenite, about 60 percent of its rutile, and virtually all of its monazite. Nearshore marine sand deposits and beach-complex sediments in the southeastern United States are important domestic sources of ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, and a number of other less well known economic heavy-mineral (HM) species. Because global onshore reserves of placer titanium minerals may fall short of demand in as few as 20 years, offshore research in HM placers will become more important. The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) defined by the shoreline and the 200-m isobath varies in width for the modern U.S. coastline from a fraction of a kilometer to about 150 km offshore of Cape Cod, Mass., and includes an area of about 3.91 x 105 km2. It probably contains 3-7 x 1011 m3 of sand and gravel which may locally contain commercially exploitable placer HM deposits.

The International Marine Minerals Society has now come of age! Previously known as the International Marine Mining Society, it was an informal group without officers, by-laws or official status. Despite the lack of formal structure, the Society has cosponsored symposia both in Europe and in North America including the 16th Annual Underwater Mining Institute in Halifax, Nova Scotia, last year. The roster of members is now sufficient to emerge as a fledgling professional society. To this end an ad hoc committee was appointed to prepare by-laws stating the objectives of the Society, provide the procedures for the election of officers and other guidelines essential for the operation of the organization. This paper briefly summarizes the history of the group, the by-laws, together with membership requirements.

In late 1988, the Committee for Coordination of Joint Prospecting for Mineral Resources in South Pacific Offshore Areas (CCOP/SOPAC), Suva, Fiji, consulted the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center regarding low-tech, low-cost, reconnaissance sampling systems for a variety of nearshore needs. Materials of interest to several member island nations included silica and calcareous aggregate for cement manufacture, sand for beach replenishment, heavy minerals, and precious metals. A principal criteria of the system was that it be of low-tech design, and as far as possible, suitable for construction on the islands from available materials. It should also be operable with SOPAC personnel on island vessels of opportunity. The system selected to satisfy these requirements was a convertible drill of basic airlift design, capable of operating with easy modification as either a vibralift or airlift, depending on the desired application. The basic system included a drill pipe constructed of heavy duty 76 mm (3") black iron pipe, divided into three 3 meter sections (for ease of transport), fitted with an air intake manifold and bit at the lower end. A 25 mm (1") galvanized pipe assembled in three similar sections and clamped to the drill pipe served as a water jet to assist in cutting. Air was supplied to the manifold by means of a 12 mm (1/2") pipe also clamped along the length of the drill pipe. Accumulation of cobalt -rich ferromanganese crusts on Pacific seamounts located off-ridge in the Hawaiian EEZ, represents a complex process that involves geologic aging of the seamounts, geographic transportation- of the seamounts on the Pacific plate during the past 80 million years, and geochemical history of the oceans for that period. A comparative study of the building and erosion processes of the young Loihi Submarine Volcano, located south of the Island of Hawaii , and the 80 million year old Cross Seamount, located west of Hawaii , shows that both edifices show wide armchair-shaped talus chutes and intervening ridges of exposed dikes. The similarity between the observed mass wasting process on Loihi and Cross suggests that the slopes of submarine volcanoes are geologically unstable from the time of their origin on the seafloor through their entire geological history. The slopes of Cross are covered by coalesced ferromanganese crust covered talus, steep exposed dike faces, and crust covered dike ridges. A study of the stratigraphy of the crusts shows a range of thicknesses and number of unconformities present. The thickest crusts, up to 8 centimeters, are found preserved within the larger coalesced slabs along the shallower slopes of the talus chutes and along the crests of the ridges between water depths of 400 and 1800 meters. The platinum content was used in stratigraphic correlation between the crusts in the coalesced slabs and those collected from ridges with the PISCES V submersible. A recently completed series of projects funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Minerals Management Service was designed to assess the distribution of heavy minerals on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia. These projects indicate that a suite of minerals of both strategic and economic interest is present. Analysis of several hundred grab and core samples shows that zircon, monazite, and titanium minerals (ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene) occur in quantities that probably warrant further study by the mineral industry. Furthermore, side-scan sonography and shallow seismic profiles have provided information on the thickness and areal extent of the mineral-bearing sands. Possible development of the resource is enhanced by a potential use of offshore sand for beach nourishment. The results of the preliminary studies have been presented in open-file publications and oral reports in order that the mineral industry might have an up to date basis upon which to consider more exploratory work. Much of the effort south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay was made in cooperation with and enhanced by an independent study of sand resources for beach nourishment and other needs. Preliminary review of the quantitative analyses of the heavy-mineral content of several hundred samples demonstrates that the distribution of high concentrations is non-uniform. The University of Hawaii, Ocean Basins Division (OBD) shares, equally with the University of Mississippi, Continental Shelf Division (CSD), congressional funding for the Marine Minerals Technology Center, a Generic Minerals Center under the U.S. Department of the Interior's Mineral Institutes Program. The State of Hawaii supports the program by the provision of salaries for the Executive and Technical Directors and by the provision of fiscal, administrative, and facilities support through the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, and the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. The Center's program of research, technology development and education is multi-disciplinary and international in scope. Polymetallic nodules are a widespread resource in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the areas of Clarion-Clipperton (Cronan, 2000). The most abundant mineral phases are formed by iron and manganese oxides, with minor elements such as nickel, copper, cobalt, molybdenum and rare earths elements (Cronan, 1977; Cronan and Moorby, 1981; Iyer and Sharma, 1990; Mangini et al. 1990; Banerjee et al. 1991). In the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), several authors mention that there are three main mineral species of manganese oxides, which have been recognized and which are associated with different processes of formation: todorokita (Mn2+, Ca, Mg) Mn34+ O7. H2), vernadite dMnO and birnessite enriched in Fe and (Na, Ca) 0.5 (Mn4+, Mn3+) 2O4. 1.5 H2O. In nodules of hydrothermal origin have been found todorokite, birnessite, vernadite, goethite and pyrolusite. Although there are many oxides and hydroxides of manganese and iron in amorphous and microcrystalline phases that make up the bulk of the nodule (Frondel et al. 1960; Cronan 1977; Dymond 1981; Calvert and Piper, 1984; Aplin and Cronan, 1985; Martin and Lallier, 1993; Achurra et al. 2009), identifying specific mineral phases is difficult due to the intergrowth of different phases and associated detrital material.

Recent investigations located at least six major massive sulfide deposits (dimensions measured in tens to hundreds of meters) within a 50-km-long segment of Escanaba Trough, the sediment-covered axial valley of southern Gorda Ridge. The sediment fill is intercalated silt and sand turbidites and hemipelagic mud with a maximum thickness of 500 m. Several volcanic edifices, spaced at approximately 15-km intervals along the ridge axis, penetrate and locally breach the sediment. The largest sulfide deposits form mounds and ridges on the steep flanks of structurally unstable sediment-capped blocks that have been uplifted above the volcanic edifices; both sediment and sulfide deposits are undergoing rapid erosion and redeposition. Although hydrothermal activity appears to be absent at most sulfide fields, 220°C fluids are discharging from the tops of sulfide mounds near 41°00'N lat, 127°31'W long. Recent pillow lavas and sheetflows erupted onto the sediment-covered sea floor less than 500 m away from the active vent field. The massive sulfide deposits have compositional characteristics that differ from deposits formed on sediment-free spreading axes. The Escanaba Trough deposits include Fe- and Cu-rich, Zn- and Pb-poor massive sulfide mounds, polymetal (Zn-Fe-Pb-Cu-As-Ag-Sb-Sn) sulfide vent structures, abundant barite-rich chimneys, crusts, and sinter cones, and thermogenic petroleum in the sulfide and sediment. The Republic of South Africa ranks among the world leaders in both reserves and production of numerous land-based mineral commodities. Over the last three decades, however, South Africa has also identified several commodities that may exist in commercial quantities in the marine environment. The major targets include 1) placer diamonds; 2) titanium- and zirconium-rich beach sands; 3) sedimentary and concretionary phosphorite and glauconite deposits; 4) manganese nodules; and 5) hydrocarbons. South Africa ranks second in world reserves of diamonds and has potentially enormous sea resources. Diamonds are currently recovered on the Atlantic side from ancient beach gravels in the Northwest Cape Province and from the seabed south of the Orange River to Lamberts Bay. Approximately 100,000 carats (or just 1% of South Africa's total annual production) are produced each year from offshore operations. DeBeers is investing approximately $5 million per year on sea prospecting activities and currently operates three vessels in offshore recovery operations. Diamonds recovered at sea will remain a small percentage of total production because of huge land-based reserves that are mined at a fraction of the cost of seabed operations.

The U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), U.K., conducted a sidescan sonar survey of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico from August 7 to October 22, 1985. A reconnaissance-scale view of 120,000 square nautical miles of sea floor seaward of the shelf-edge was obtained by using the GLORIA (Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan sonar system. After these data were merged with GLORIA data from an earlier survey (1982) of the northwestern Gulf, a preliminary mosaic was constructed at a scale of 1:375,000. From this mosaic, we can identify morphologic features and interpret sea-floor processes. The extensive deformation of the continental slope seaward of Texas and Louisiana by salt tectonics has resulted in a complex pattern of basins and salt dome highs. One continuous meandering channel was identified in this portion of the Gulf, extending from the shelf edge to the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain. Bottom currents have reworked the sediments in this channel's levees seaward of the Sigsbee Escarpment, the seaward edge of the salt front, suggesting that this channel may no longer be actively transporting sediment. Talus appears to lie along the base of the Sigsbee Escarpment, suggesting that erosion and deposition is occur- ring along this front. Three other discontinuous channel systems can be identified on the mosaic and appear to have contributed sediments to the deep Gulf.

The age of mineralization, its mode of formation, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit, its capacity for sustainable extraction and, ultimately, its grade and tonnage, are key aspects in the economic viability of volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits (Ditchburn et al, 2004). Radiometric dating methods applied at GNS Science have been recently refined with the purpose of efficiently determining the ages of seafloor VMS mineralization along active intraoceanic arcs. These developments include: determining the longevity of seafloor hydrothermal systems, details of individual chimney and massive sulfide mound growth, and insights into deep-seated processes, such as the transfer of elements from magmas to their overlying hydrothermal systems. In our pursuit to better understand seafloor hydrothermal systems along intraoceanic arcs, we have thus far compiled age information for three volcanic centres of the Kermadec arc (South Pacific) and one of the Mariana arc (NW Pacific).

Polymetallic sulphide (PMS) deposits have recently been discovered associated with hydrothermal vents on the sea floor off Vancouver Island, B.C. Visual estimates indicate reserves in excess of 1 million tons. Reliable reserve estimates have not yet been made, however, due to the extreme difficulty of drilling cores in 2 km of water. Few geophysical techniques can aid in the exploration of these deposits. There is little or no difference in radioactivity, magnetic susceptibility or electrical resistivity between the deposits and the surrounding sea floor sediments. This precludes radiometric, magnetic, electromagnetic and resistivity methods. There is a density contrast, but the logistics of gravity surveys at such depths are formidable. The physical property which shows the most contrast with the sea floor sediments, and which is perhaps one of the easiest to measure (with modern equipment) is polarizability. The induced polarization (IP) method is one of the major electrical geophysical techniques for exploring for PMS deposits on land.

Many of the Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits of the Bathurst area in northern New Brunswick, Canada, are intimately associated with laterally continuous iron formation (IF) (Figure 1). This IF is a fossil laminated, exhalative, chemical sediment. Together, the IF and the Brunswick #12, Brunswick #6, and Austin Brook deposits (rightmost discontinuous horizon on Figure 1) are collectively referred to as the "Brunswick Belt". To date we have only studied the Brunswick Belt and have not examined the horizon along which the QSR, CNE and Flat Landing Brook deposits lie. The Bathurst area is underlain by the Tetagouche Group (Figure 2), a Cambro(?)-Ordovician sequence of metasedimentary and bimodal metavolcanic rocks that was intruded by mafic to felsic plutons and subsequently deformed during the Taconic Orogeny. The stratigraphic sequence consists of shales and greywackes that are overlain by carbonaceous shales and felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks; these are in turn overlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The massive sulfide deposits and IF occur within the upper portions of the felsic volcanic rocks in close association with carbnaceous metasedimentary footwall rocks (Figure 2).

In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth).
