In this study, for the first time, to confirm the effect of bacterial growth phase on the malachite flotation were investigated in a well-controlled Hallimond tube system. The test results showed that the bacteria in the stationary phase exhibit two-fold greater floatability than those in mid-exponential phase. To understand the observed flotation behavior, complementary cell characterization tests and cell attachment tests were conducted. Interestingly, the bacteria at both phases exhibited similar surface properties as well as almost identical amount of cells attached onto the malachite, suggesting that the growth phasedependent flotation behavior cannot be attributed to the variation of cell surface properties and the extent of cell adsorption. On the other hand, cell detachment tests revealed that the amount of cells detached from the malachite surface is greater for the mid-exponential phase than the stationary phase due to the higher fluid drag applied to the cells at the mid-exponential phase, which was explained by the differences in the size and shape of attached bacteria onto the malachite surface. These morphological characteristics were found to cause the bacteria of mid-exponential phase to be separated highly sensitive and easy from malachite surface due to the fluid flow. Second, scale-up selective bioflotation tests were carried out in a 1 L Denver cell in malachite–silica binary mixture systems. Through the tests, we optimized the cell concentration and the malachite fraction in the feed. Overall, high malachite selectively was observed under optimized conditions (both recovery and grade showed more than 90%). The trend was in agreement with classical DLVO interaction energy profiles, which show the relative magnitudes of the adhesive forces between the mineral and the attached cell under equal hydrodynamic conditions.

"The North Star and Don Jon copper deposits lie beneath the waters of Thompson Lake, which is 12 miles east of Flin Flon, Manitoba. The deposits were discovered during the years 1949 and 1951 by diamond drilling done in the vicinity of pyritic showings on the shores of two small islands in the lake. The Don Jon ore body lies 1, 700 feet southeast of the North Star orebody and is connected with the North Star mine workings by a crosscut on the 600-foot level (Figure 1 ).Production began on January 1, 1955, at a combined rate of 200 tons per day. The ore is trucked, on 24 miles of highway, to the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited mill at Flin Flon.Regional GeologyRocks in the Thompson Lake area are Precambrian volcanics, ranging in composition from andesite to rhyolite, with related tuffs and breccia. These rocks have a general north-south trend and are steeply dipping. The area is part of the Lac Aimee fault block, which probably is the southward extension of a south-plunging syncline now thrust some miles to the north. This regional deformation has produced many subsidiary zones of intense shearing and crumpling. It is in two of these zones of shearing and drag-folding that the orebodies occur. The only recognizable intrusive is a narrow diorite sill which trends northeasterly near the west shore of Thompson Lake.The North Star MineA pyritic showing, carrying some chalcopyrite, was discovered around the year 1930 on the west side of a small island near the west shore of Thompson Lake. This ground was included in a group of claims acquired by the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co., Limited in 1947.In the years 1949 to 1951, a diamond drilling program outlined a copper sulphide orebody. This ore zone comes to surface beneath the lake, about 300 feet north of the pyritic showing on the island."

Copper sulfide minerals such as chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite exhibit high floatability, thus they can be recovered as a froth product by adding only a collector in flotation process. However, when their surface is oxidized, the floatability decreases and the simple addition of collectors is no longer effective. In this case, flotation activators are required to improve the floatability. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) acts as an activator for chalcocite and bornite by re-sulfurizing their oxidized surface portions. Nevertheless, the flotation conditions still require optimization in order to achieve a satisfactory recovery of copper minerals. This work addresses the study of the effect of pH and NaHS dosage on the flotation of a complex Chilean copper ore containing chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite. Flotation experiments were conducted using a Denver-type flotation cell and by investigating the effect of two NaHS dosages (50, 100 g/t) and three pH values (8, 9, 10). Following this process, the surface interaction between the minerals and NaHS were analyzed using zeta potential measurements. INTRODUCTION In recent years in the mining area of metal resources, the complexity of ores and the fineness of grind required to liberate minerals have become serious problems. When ores are complex, several valuable minerals may interact with each other and reactions may become more complicated compared with an ore containing only one valuable mineral. Therefore, more processing steps may be required than for a simple ore. When the valuable minerals exist as fine grains, it is difficult to liberate them and more grinding time is required. Furthermore, the probability of collision of fine particles with bubbles in the flotation process declines and it takes much time to recover them. Flotation is one of the most applied methods to separate valuable minerals from unwanted ones using the difference of hydrophobicity (or hydrophilicity). In the flotation method, the air is fed to a cell filled with the pulp of the mineral of interest and agitation is implemented to introduce air and generate bubbles. The hydrophobic particles attach themselves to the bubbles and float along with the bubbles while the hydrophilic particles remain in the pulp. Copper sulfide minerals such as chalcocite (Cu2S), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) are widely known abundant copper resources. Generally, flotation is used to recover and concentrate these minerals. Copper sulfide minerals usually have high floatability. However when their surfaces are oxidized, their floatability becomes lower. When the sulfide surfaces are oxidized, activators are added before flotation to modify the surface property of the Copper sulfide minerals so that they can be floated. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known as one of the activators. Zhao (2018) reported that NaHS is often used as a sulfurizer for oxidized sulfide minerals (Becker (2014), Clark (2000), Newell (2006), and Newell (2007)). In earlier work, the authors performed flotation tests on a sample of Chilean copper ore which contained chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite using a Denver-type flotation apparatus. The sample was ground to P80 70 µm with a rod mill and ball mill. In these tests, the following conditions were used: natural pH (about pH 8.5), flotation time of 45 min, 60 g/t AP3477 (sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphate) as collector, and MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) at appropriate dosage as frother. NaHS was applied at the dosage of 0, 67, and 120 g/t, respectively at the conditioning. The concentrates were collected at 6, 18, 30, and 45 min. The weights of the concentrates and tailing were measured and they were assayed for copper by ICP-AES (Optima 5300 DV, PerkinElmer Inc.). The flotation recoveries of the copper minerals were calculated from the results of MLA (mineral liberation analyser) (MLA 650, FEI) measurements.

"Increased demand for light-weighting in passenger vehicles has created a need for strong, light, ductile materials to be used in body-in-white applications. The AA6xxx-series of aluminum alloys are suitable candidates meeting most requirements but can fall short of the formability demands of designers, necessitating an understanding of what controls the formability in this alloy series. This work examines the effect of copper alloying in AA6xxx on the pre-ageing and natural ageing responses of the microstructure and mechanical properties. The changes in microstructure observed by differential scanning calorimetry and hardness testing are related to the work-hardening and strain-rate sensitivity parameters for these alloys measured by tensile testing. An observed asymmetry in the measured strain-rate sensitivity associated with increasing versus decreasing strain rate changes suggests that a different mechanism operates for the two conditions. It is postulated how this asymmetry in strain-rate sensitivity will impact the necking and ductility behaviour of these alloys.INTRODUCTION The widespread use of AA6xxx series alloys in the form of sheets has provided the need for a more thorough understanding of the complex interactions between composition, processing, resulting microstructure and ultimately, the mechanical properties of the alloys. Conventional industrial practices involve the production of rolled AA6xxx sheet (typically 1 mm thick) to be used for body-in-white (BIW) applications for auto body panels (Hirsch, 2004, 2014). The final metallurgical step prior to the shipment of these panels to manufacturers involves a solution heat treatment (SHT) reverting the ageing products of the alloys into solid solution and the product is then shipped to the customer. During this shipping time and while sheets are waiting to be used, the natural ageing (NA) process occurs whereby the strength of the alloys increases resulting in reduced formability. This can result in a product that is unable to meet the formability demands of the automotive manufacturer. As a result, industry has moved towards performing pre-ageing (PA) treatments to prolong the “shelf-life” of the material prior to it having insufficient formability. Once formed into BIW panels, the parts are then painted and subsequently undergo the paint curing heat treatment which consists of a short period of time at medium temperature, typically 20 minutes at 170–190°C. This short artificial ageing (AA) treatment, known as the paint bake (PB), provides additional strength and improved dent resistance for the material, but reduced formability. The PB result is strongly dependent on the PA treatment performed prior to the forming operation. Furthermore, the addition of copper (Cu) to a base Al-Mg-Si composition is known to increase the alloy’s strength. The goal of this work is to study the effect of Cu on strength, strain hardening, and strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) of these alloys, to understand the strength-formability compromise, for two separate heat treatment schedules; one including and one excluding the PA treatment, both followed by NA."

"The paper describes the advanced grinding control system implemented at Newmont Ahafo gold mine, Ghana in 2009 and 2010. It shows how the different components of the Advanced Process Control (APC) system cooperate for increasing plant performance.The SABC circuit processes hard rock from different pits mixed with a variable proportion of oxides. The control strategy is designed to address specific disturbances, including start/stops of pebble crushers, unavailability of oxides, changes in rock size distribution resulting from segregation in the stockpile, and changes in ore type and hardness.The system consists of an expert system per se with extensive use of fuzzy logic, supplemented by an online dynamic model of the process used as a soft sensor, a VisioRock™ rock size measurement system over SAG mill feed before addition of recycled pebbles, and an AudioMill™ system to analyze the SAG mill sound and detect impacts on liners. All these components are embedded in the same OCS© software platform, which, among other benefits, makes it easy to support the entire system remotely. The paper details the physical constraints and the variables that are manipulated. It describes the control strategy and the contribution of each component of the system. It also describes the project implementation and the performance of the system. In addition to a strong involvement and support of management, the very good acceptance of the operators has been facilitated by the remote access system that made it possible to immediately modify the system each time it was needed during the baby sitting phase.The system made it possible to increase gold production significantly through increases in tonnage and recovery thanks to a better control of the grind size through a stabilization of the secondary ball milling circuit and an improvement of the operating conditions of the classifying cyclones."

"INTRODUCTION Over the past decade, a number of publications have described the advances in High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation. A number of significant, but small capacity installations were made and are successfully operating. These were followed some three years ago by larger installations treating ilmenite gravity concentrates; at least one machine treating 25 tons per hour of new feed was installed and is successfully operating.However, this still did not result in general acceptance that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation could be applied on a large scale. Neither did it dispel the feeling that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation was ""expensive"" and hence, confined to small scale – high value applications suchas the cleaning of tin concentrates. In addition, there is the usual reluctance of being the ""guinea pig"" which has resulted in waiting to see ""someone else"" make the first large installation decision. Such a decision and installation has now been made.Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to show that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation has been commercially accepted on a large scale and to show its general application to the base metal mineral industry.Examples are confined to a few specifics due to the large volume of preliminary test data that is available. The art has now reached the stage where much of the preliminary work should be taken through to serious evaluation."

The paper will outline the destructive test methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties of rope samples used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts, additional discard criteria used in Ontario, Quebec and South Africa shall be presented. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL can also be found in the current CSA G4-00 Standard, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage, published in November 2000. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4-00, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The CSA G4-00 Standard is also intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, and includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish. To-date the Ontario Mining Regulations require only that destructive test of new ropes be performed in accordance with CSA Standard G4-00, but does not require conformity to the Standard, and on the other hand the inservice wire ropes are required to be tested in accordance with CSA G4 and thus require conformity. The author recommends that the Ontario Mining Regulations (and regulations of other mining jurisdictions) be improved in order to ensure quality control in the manufacturing of wire ropes destined for mines in Ontario (and Canada). Also, the author recommends the revision of the CSA G4-00 Standard by the technical committee in order to address manufacturer?s concerns with respect to compliance, and harmonize the Standard with Internationally recognized Standards.

In New Brunswick, significant potash deposits are intimately associated with rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group. To date, two deposits high in sylvinite, up to 20 m thick, have been confirmed at depths between 490 and 1,035 m below surface near Plumweseep and Salt Springs. These areas are currently under development by the Potash Company of America and the Denison-Potacan Potash Company respectively. A third area, near Lower Millstream, is also known to contain potash-bearing evaporites and is now being explored by BP Exploration Canada Ltd. All three areas are situated in the western half of the Moncion Subbasin and are within 25 km of Sussex. Numerous similarities in stratigraphy, thickness, mineralogy and structure suggest that deposition of evaporites throughout much of southern New Brunswick was contemporaneous and extended over a considerable area. Future opportunities for potash exploration in the province thus seem excellent. A number of large unexplored areas remain in the Moncion and Cumberland Subbasins and in parts

Abstract: Development of cost-effective techniques for recovering precious metals from their ores has been the goal of metallurgists for hundreds of years. Today, metallurgists are increasingly called upon to design processes for ores that are refractory to conventional recovery techniques. These challenges and the addition of environmental costs (including site remediation) to the total cost of mining have stimulated a search for alternatives to conventional processes, such as cyanidation. This paper describes the progress made to date in development of an innovative alternative to cyanidation, termed bisulfide leaching, for extracting gold, silver and platinum-group elements from refractory ores and concentrates. While bisulfide leaching can be implemented abiotically, significant benefits accrue from its practice as a bioprocess that integrates the steps of precious-metals liberation and extraction. In many applications, bisulfide leaching appears to offer significant advantages over the traditional cyanidation process. Dissolved bisulfide and hydrogen sulfide are much less toxic than dissolved cyanide and hydrogen cyanide. Recommended workspace exposure limits and harmful concentrations for hydrogen sulfide gas are higher than those for hydrogen cyanide gas. While the facilities required to practice the bioprocess on an industrial scale would be similar to that of cyanidation plants, chemical reagent costs could be 80 percent less. The bioprocess may also offer advantages in the leaching of ores and concentrates that are not amenable to cyanidation. For example, bisulfide leaching of ores containing carbonaceous material may produce higher gold recoveries if the "preg-robbing" characteristic of the material can be controlled biologically or with dissolved sulfide binding. Moreover, in that precious metals are much more soluble than base metals in bisulfide solutions, bisulfide leaching offers distinct advantages over cyanidation for selective dissolution of precious metals from base-metal concentrates. Thus, the bioprocess uses the natural sulfur cycle to mitigate pollutant production and to enhance precious-metals recovery.

The control room in a mineral processing plant has become increasingly complicated with complex unit operations coupled with rapidly evolving systems of sensors and control. Even with significant automation, human intervention is required to counter various scenarios that play out every day. A typical control room operator must monitor over 300 individual points of data in order to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the plant. At the same time, the experience of the workforce is decreasing as operators retire and the new generation enters the concentrators. Global competition for skilled operators continues to be strong and the opportunity to apprentice has diminished. The challenge is to provide a skill foundation for the operators so that they can be effective in the concentrator in a timely and safe manner. Progressively, the industry is turning to dynamic simulation tied into the control system. The simulator environment operates behind the control system to emulate the plant operation, reacting as the plant would when a change is made. The operator drives the process, with realistic feedback, which enables learning in a safe environment. This paper will take the reader through a green-field case study and discuss the effectiveness of integrating an operator training simulator (OTS) on the operator’s learning curve.

Transportation, where necessary, becomes a question of very great importance. For this reason every mechanical contrivance known to man is employed, with its resultant advantages. So successful has man's ingenuity been that, offhand, we are inclined to say that practically all transportation on a large scale is done mechanically, that is, where speed and economy are desiderata. Granting this, one would think that to read a paper on the horse before your honourable and highly technical Society would surely be a waste of time, and that any Company employing old-fashioned 'horse' power would certainly be very much behind the time, to say the least. However, the fact remains that the biggest industry in our country today-coal mining-must use horse power to a great extent, being compelled -both by considerations of economy and by necessity. For this reason,' in the production of coal under present conditions, the pit horse is of great importance to this industry and is to be considered seriously as one of the units that help to make coal mining a success or a failure. Hence, in employing horses as a power for transportation, care must be exercised in selecting the animals, and the care of this power must be considered as seriously as any other department of such an organization. In selecting a pit horse, several things must be borne in mind, that is, one must get as much horse power as possible in as compact a form as is practicable. This determines the type of horse we must use, which is of very great importance under our present conditions of coal mining. With low roof, steep grades, and forced production, a distinct type of animal must be selected.

It is well known that there are many ways to process copper concentrates into copper anodes using the pyrometallurgical route. All modern copper smelting technologies are fundamentally energy efficient and environmentally safe options, and therefore choosing one depends on the desired capacity range, feed impurity levels, plant location, flexibility needs, overall energy use, and of course smelter economics in both the short and long term. This paper focuses on comparing different solutions which have potentially the lowest variable opex (operational expense), meaning in practice finding out which technology offers the best chances for profit maximization under certain scenarios. For the comparison, we chose to have a closer look at Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Outotec- Kennecott Flash Converting (FCF), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Outotec Ausmelt TSL Converting (ACF), Mitsubishi Smelting Process (MIT), Bottom Blowing Reactor (BBR) – Bottom Blowing Continuous Converting (BCC), and Side Blowing Furnace (SBF) - Top Blowing Converting (TBC) since these seem to be the main state-of-art technologies now being applied in many recent copper smelter projects around the world. The work was carried out by modelling each smelting route by using the new HSC SIM 9 simulation software and applying operation time, energy, and consumables consumption numbers for each unit process and stream. Combined with cost data, the exercise produced a rich set of information which will be shown in detail for each area per scenario. The authors’ goal here was to provide a fair comparison where each technology can be evaluated from various perspectives such as electricity use or refractory consumption. INTRODUCTION Copper can be produced either pyrometallurgically or hydrometallurgically. The hydrometallurgical route is used only for a limited amount of the world’s copper production (~20%) and is normally only considered in connection with in-situ leaching of copper ores. On the other hand, most of the copper extraction from Cu-Fe-S minerals is pyrometallurgical (~80%) (Schlesinger 2011, ICSG 2017). "During the fall of 1993, a new Pill-based control strategy was installed in the B grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. The control strategy was first evaluated on a grinding circuit dynamic simulator (DYNAFRAG), which permitted the discrimination between more than a dozen possible control alternatives. Once the final choice was made the necessary instruments were purchased and installed. The control strategy was configured on the plant computer and is planned to be commissioned shortly.This paper summarizes the control strategy, the design procedure, the installation and the controller tuning. Some preliminary problems posed by the process prior to implementation are also presented.IntroductionIn 1990 the GRAIIM (french acronym for Research Group on Computer Applications to the Mineral Industry) of Laval University started a research project on Knowledge Based Automatic Control (KBAC). This project is sponsored by a consortium of eight mining companies under the umbrella ofMI1EC (Mining Technology Council of Canada), the Quebec Mining Association (AMQ), CANMET and the Centre de Recherches minerales (CRM). The project also benefits from important grants from the Ministere de l'Education Superieure et de la Science and the NSREC-CRD program.The main objective of this project is the screening of advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc.) and automatic control (model-based control) for their use in the mineral processing operations. "The gold deposits of the Caribou mine are representative of those of the Province of Nova Scotia as a whole. The ore shoots within the deposits, in common with those elsewhere within the Province, are associated usually with interruptions or irregularities in the broader and uniform fold structures. The structural factors localizing ore deposition as applied more specifically to the Caribou mine are demonstrated chiefly by the close relationship of the two principal ore shoots, known as the main orebody and the 'high-grade' vein, with a pitching drag fold developed in the southeast limb of the major northeast-southwest trending anticlinal fold or elongated dome that constitutes the primary structural feature of the Caribou gold district. It is of interest to note that the evidence indicates that this drag fold, in common with other folds subsidiary to the primary fold, formed as a result of movement similar in nature to that which caused the primary fold itself. Presumably, therefore, these folds are coincident in time.The property described here as the Caribou mine is an amalgamation of two adjacent properties formerly known as the Ross and the Nova Scotia Gold, but which since 1934 have been controlled and operated as a unit by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The Caribou mine is situated in the Caribou gold district about 45 miles to the northeast of the city of Halifax and about 6 miles to the north of the Moose River gold district.The history of mining at Caribou dates back to 1867. The first recorded gold production is for 1869. From 1869 to 1933 the gold produced from the mines of the Caribou district aggregated 47,249 oz. from 93,234 tons of ore treated. The grade of the ore on the basis of the gold actually recovered from the district would thus average 72 oz. gold a ton, which, as will be noted from the following, is precisely the grade of the ore treated from the Caribou mine during operations by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company. These operations commenced in September, 1934, and milling on a commercial basis was under way during 1938. Since that time production, apart from a short period in 1945 during which efforts were concentrated on development work, was continuous to early in 1947, when the mine closed down owing to exhaustion of the known orebodies. Gold produced from the Caribou mine by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company from September, 1934, to the close of 1946 aggregated 43,205 oz. from 90,754 tons of ore milled; the grade of ore treated averaged 0.50 oz. gold a ton. The indicated average grade of O.S oz. gold a ton for the ore of the Caribou district throughout its mining history ranks somewhat higher than the 0.37 oz. a ton average for the ore milled to date from the several gold districts throughout the Province as a whole according to the production statistics of the Provincial Department of Mines."

Pyrrhotite-rich tailings from Sudbury, Ontario mining activities are known to contain significant amounts of EV metals, such as nickel and cobalt.  CanmetMINING has developed a novel bioleaching process for recovering the nickel and cobalt (both critical for vehicle electrification) from tailings that incorporates partial neutralization and iron removal in the bioleaching circuit; bench- and pilot-scale tests have resulted in excellent nickel and cobalt recovery over a range of temperatures.  However, this process generates a new bioleach residue, which is heavier and more voluminous than the original tailings due to pyrrhotite oxidation and jarosite formation during the bioleaching process. This residue can be problematic for long-term disposal. A possible solution being studied for this issue is using mine backfill as a disposal mechanism.  Underground backfilling allows for effective re-purposing of mine waste, however the backfill must also be able to withstand a certain load, since in most cases it is used as an underground construction material, such as in cut-and-fill mining methods.  Therefore, the composition of the mill tailings must be such that when combined with a binding agent and pumped underground, the slurry or paste is then able to withstand a certain load within a certain period of time.  Unfortunately, high-pyrrhotite content tailings, commonly found on mine sites in Ontario and Quebec, are reactive and can easily oxidize and produce acidity and/or metal-laden drainage under some disposal conditions. This means that the pyrrhotite in the tailings can lead to acid mine drainage if stored on surface, however, it can also cause strength degradation if re-purposed in too high a concentration in underground mine backfill.  The research being done at CanmetMINING related to the bioleaching process is aimed not only at recovering nickel and cobalt from mine tailings, it is also being used in an attempt to neutralize the tailings to reduce acid mine drainage and backfill strength degradation. This paper reports on research designed to evaluate different options for transforming the bioleaching process residue into iron oxide phases, for better environmental footprints if stored on surface, as well as increased disposal possible, if re-purposed as underground mine backfill material.

This study examined the effects of pH and sulphate concentration on the surface charge and stability of alumina and pyrite dispersions. The relationship between these properties was investigated using measurements of electrophoretic mobility and settling velocity. The maximum aggregation for both minerals was observed near the iso-electric point (iep) where the force of repulsion is at a minimum. Aggregation decreased at pH values away from the iep, where an increased surface charge causes electrostatic repulsion between particles. Zeta potential data revealed that sulphate ions were adsorbed only on positively charged surfaces for both minerals. Adsorption of sulphates on the alumina surface increased aggregation by reducing the surface charge from >+25 mV to close to zero. These results indicate an electrostatic bonding of sulphate ions to alumina surface. Preliminary results on the interaction of pyrite and sulphate ions indicate a similar response.

STEEPROCK LAKE (Figure 1) lies about two miles north of Atikokan, a village approximately one hundred and forty miles west of Fort William and one hundred miles east of Fort Frances on the Canadian National railway. The possible presence of hematite beneath the waters of Middle arm was inferred by early geological investigators (1890-1903) from the dense hematite float found on the southerly shores of this portion of the lake (1). A dip-needle survey of Middle arm, undertaken in the winter of 1930-31 by J. G. Cross, indicated two areas of high magnetic attraction which Mr. Cross thought might be due to magnetic iron oxides associated with possible hematite bodies. Bedrock could not be reached by the ineffectual hand-drilling so courageously attempted, and further work was abandoned. It was not until 1937 that Mr. Jos. Errington, of Toronto, convinced of the possibilities, determined to support Mr. Cross to the extent of several thousand feet of drilling. During the winter of 1937-38, holes Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 13 were put down (see Figure 1). The first four of these holes demonstrated that the areas of magnetic attraction outlined by the dip-needle survey east of the Narrows and southwest of Elbow point were due to ash rock (2). As a result, Mr. Cross decided to investigate the bordering areas of low magnetic attraction and selected a location near the high ferruginous lime (3) point in the northeast of Middle arm. Dense, hard hematite beneath approximately 350 feet of water and clay was struck in the first hole, and, before the end of the winter's drilling, hematite had been encountered in holes Nos. 6 to 13 along a straight line 700 feet in length (see Figure 1). In the meantime, the Steerola ( 4) Exploration Company had been formed to continue development and already, in the spring of 1938, W. D. Neeland, the Company geologist, had come to the conclusion that the most probable location for possible hematite was at the ash-lime contact. Accordingly, during the summer, drilling was continued off-shore in holes Nos. 15, 25, and 27 (see Figure 2) toward possible hematite bodies inferred by Mr. Neeland.
