The journey toward cleaner coal-fired power generation is driven by technological improvements, more stringent regulations around greenhouse gas and other air emissions, and the potential of one of Canada?s most abundant resources. Within this context, EPCOR is leading efforts to commercialize gasification technology to produce electricity with near-zero emissions. By turning coal, oxygen, and water into synthesis gas through a gasification process ? and then capturing CO2 ? it is possible to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas and smog-related emissions. EPCOR is conducting front-end engineering and design work on an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle technology (IGCC) utility-scale plant ? in conjunction with the Canadian Clean Power Coalition ? at its Genesee site, west of Edmonton. EPCOR, the Alberta Energy Research Institute, and Natural Resources Canada have each contributed $11 million to the $33 million project. A critical element of the project features the capture of CO2, which would be piped underground for long-term sequestration, or for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The combination of IGCC and CO2 sequestration, at this scale, has not been used anywhere else in the world.

Kidd Mine, an Xstrata Copper operation in Timmins, Ontario, operates a 400 t/h pastefill plant that provides paste backfill to stopes at the depth of 9000 ft. This paper will cover the operating practices of the pastefill plant both on surface and underground, highlighting tailings excavation, paste mix design and the pipe maintenance program. "The mechanical behaviour of rock materials is largely influenced by the stress state and pore pressure; this needs to be considered in many applications, such as petroleum engineering, tunnelling or stability of underground excavations.Conventional triaxial tests (d2 = d 3) are generally used to assess the influence of confining and pore pressure. In this work, those tests are performed on a porous rock named Sorcy limestone, along with more advanced stress paths like triaxial extension (d 2 = d 1) and purely deviatoric tests with independent pore pressure control. Those tests are combined to a true triaxial study on the dry rock in order to investigate the effect of true triaxial stresses and, hence, build three-dimensional limiting envelopes accounting for the influence of pore pressure.Three-dimensional limiting envelopes of dry Sorcy limestone are built in meridian and octahedral planes. The shape of the octahedral sections changes with the mean stress from triangular to hexagonal and then quasi circular. At even higher mean stresses, the evolution continues towards a triangle with apexes oriented in the direction of triaxial extension stress states. In meridian sections, the deviatoric stress first increases with the mean stress. The transition between this deviatoric mechanism and the cap surface occurs at different mean pressures depending on the Lode angle.Terzaghi’s effective stress is found to govern the yield and plastic behaviour of saturated Sorcy limestone. Triaxial tests show that the limiting envelope does not depend on the loading path (conventional compression and purely deviatoric stress paths). In triaxial extension, the brittle-ductile transition is observed for a higher mean pressure than in triaxial compression, as previously found for true triaxial tests on the dry rock.Finally, it is shown that upon appropriate normalisation, the dry and saturated yield envelopes come very close one to each other. This suggests that only the size of the yield envelope changes between dry and saturated state (pore pressure = 5 MPa); its shape does not seem to evolve."

"With the implementation of more advanced monitoring, control and locating systems in surface mines, there is an ever increasing need for their mine-wide integration toward achieving over-all optimization. AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. is developing the basis for a comprehensive real-time monitoring, control and information system called the Total Mining System or TMS. This system is being designed to address both current and future needs of open pit mines toward improving productivity and minimizing costs, through better two-way information flow between each component in the operation. At a basic level, feedback from equipment and process monitoring will enable decision making to be based on quantitative, on-demand information, thus permitting proactive rather than reactive planning. Dynamic planning would be a valuable tool as market conditions fluctuate, equipment fleets age and variations in the grade, quality, geometry and hardness of the mined material all contribute to either changing production targets or levels of achievable performance. Such a capability could be implemented within the next two years.At a higher level, and within five years, autonomous operation and/or real-time supervisory control of mobile and stationary equipment in open pit mines will be achieved. A discussion is provided in regard to the development and implementation of an autonomous haultruck and blasthole drill, to demonstrate the need for such a system.This paper outlines a preliminary program for the design, development and implementation of this system, primarily in relation to high-level communications and its role in the future automation of open pit mobile equipment."

Roast-reduction smelting (RRS) of nickel concentrate, combined with flash smelting of copper concentrate, was one of the process options that Inco considered as a means of meeting its 1994 sulphur dioxide abatement target at its Copper Cliff operations. RRS involves deep roasting the nickel concentrate in fluid bed roasters. The roaster off-gas is treated in a sulphuric acid plant, and the low sulphur calcine is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulphur- deficient matte. The latter material is converted to Bessemer matte in Peirce-Smith converters, with minimal evolution of sulphur dioxide, and the converter slag is reverted to the electric furnace. Excellent nickel and cobalt recoveries (Ire obtained. This paper discusses the development of RRS, including extensive commercial scale testing at Inco's Thompson Smelter, and its key operating parameters.

They are used by many kinds of individuals in many kind s of situations. Prospectors commonly take royalty interests back when they transfer claims to development companies. Mining companies disposing of undeveloped (or sometimes even developed) properties are often paid at least in part by royalties. Royalties are even used by institutional investors with no other connection with the resource industry.Such different royalty holders have different investment goals, different cash flow requirements, and different risk / return preferences. These differences have given rise to a number of different royalty type s. These types range from the simplest cents-per-ton royalty (where the operator pays a royalty at a fixed rate per ton milled) to net smelter return or ""NSR"" royalties (where the royalty is based on a percentage of the operator's NSR) all the way to net profit interest or ""NPI"" royalties (where the royalty is based on the operator's bottom-line net profit),The fundamental difference between the many royalty types is in the risk/ return relationship. The cents-per-ton royalty, for example, is relatively risk-free. Of the many economic factors which affect a mine, the only one which will affect the royalty holder is the amount of ore physically milled. On the other hand, the potential for significant gains under a cents-per-ton royalty is also very limited. To achieve renovation work without noise, the authors developed techniques of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components for renovation work. In this paper, to achieve the system of pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors describe a measuring method of reinforced-concrete structure by 3D laser scanner and then describe a method of making a design of pre-cut interior finishing components with the polygon model. Using these two methods, the steps of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components consist of the following four steps: First, measure the building shape using a 3D laser scanner. Secondly, integrate a point cloud data and retrieve the markings on the floor. Then, create a polygon model of the building based on the point cloud data. Lastly, make a drywall design using a polygon model. To evaluate the technique feasibility of manufacturing pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have conducted an experiment of the finishing interior work of the drywall. Using pre-cut interior finishing components, the authors have been able to achieve interior finishing work without noise.

"Abstract - "Les Mines Selbaie" is a large, generally low-grade, polymetallic (Zn, Cu, Ag, Au) "giant" volcanic-associated ore deposit in the Harricana-Turgeon belt, which is part of the northern Abitibi Subprovince of Quebec. Economically recoverable mineralization occurred in three zones: the A1 (open pit), A2, and B Zones (underground). The pre-mining resource was 54.9 Mt, including 8 Mt of sub-economic, locally silver-rich massive pyrite. In the Selbaie region, calc-alkaline andesitic volcanics form the "basement." The Brouillan Volcanic Complex formed within an islandarc setting on this regional basement. Evolution of this complex involved the formation of a felsic magma chamber and the development of a large caldera structure over the Brouillan batholith. Second- order linear and sub-parallel faults and rifts developed as a result of back-arc rifting/extension. The edges of these rifts were feeders for linear felsic volcanism (similar to fissural volcanism). During felsic volcanism, the feeder zones acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids with associated pervasive potassic alteration. The alteration is characterized both vertically and laterally by well-defined quartz, sericite, K-feldspar and/or, locally, biotite halos, to produce a mushroom-shaped morphology. This K-feldspar alteration is not common in most other volcanic-associated ore deposits. Mafic dikes cut all of the geological units and appear to occupy earlier synvolcanic structures. Regional greenschist- assemblage metamorphism and pervasive deformation affect all units. Thrust faults moved part of the Brouillan batholith and basement units over the Mine Sequence. Although there is no relationship between the earlier mineralizing events and these late thrust faults, the thrust faults probably played an important role in location of ore lenses. Three types of mineralization are present: 1) copper-rich veins and hydraulic breccias; 2) disseminated and stringer, low-grade and high volume zinc-copper mineralization; and 3) finely laminated, massive, locally silver-rich pyrite mineralization within structural basins. At the bottom of these basins and at the contact of welded acid tuff (WAT) units, massive pyrite zones are locally enriched in zinc, and contain the possible vestiges of black smoker-like material. The ore metals were probably derived from leached basement andesitic volcanics in a hydrothermal system powered by one or more heat sources within the Brouillan Volcanic Complex. The Selbaie deposits are mainly characterized by: (1) the presence of small volcano-tectonic subsidence basins, which host chemical sediments and volcaniclastic materials; (2) pervasive potassic alteration; (3) locally high-grade silver mineralization (up to 1-2 kg/t Ag); and (4) the presence of random zones of Pb mineralization. The Selbaie deposits can be closely compared with the copper-rich Murgul deposits, which belong to the eastern Pontides metallogenetic province in Turkey. If conventional classification criteria for the volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (e.g., Noranda, Mattabi types, and recent subsea floor deposits) are taken into account, the Selbaie deposits still exhibit many differences in terms of alteration assemblages, physical volcanology and some styles of mineralization (low-grade and large volume). Consequently, the "Selbaie" deposits belong to a new sub-type of volcanic-associated sulfide deposit, which may be used in future exploration programs."

The nickel-cobalt sulphides produced from limonitic laterite ores by Moa Nickel S.A. in Cuba are refined at the Corefco nickel-cobalt refinery in Canada. Major changes to the refining process were required when the Moa sulphide feed, with its unusually high cobalt content, was introduced in the early 1990's. In the period 1994 to 2005 the production capacity of the refinery has increased dramatically to match increases at Moa, and significant process improvements incorporated. The process flowsheet consists of the original ammonia leach process, optimized for cobalt chemistry and overall leaching capacity. Extraction of metal values is followed by the unique nickel-cobalt separation technology, in which most of the cobalt is separated from the ammoniacal nickel sulphate leach solution by precipitation as a nickel-cobalt hexammine salt. This salt is refined from a Co:Ni ratio of 1:1 to over 10,000:1 by selectively leaching nickel, redissolution and recrystallization in ammonium sulphate solution. Nickel and cobalt are recovered using the well-known Sherritt hydrogen reduction technology. This paper reviews the chemistry described above, examines some of the changes in operating conditions made over the years and highlights some of the recent physical changes made to the refinery.

"The Fox Mine has been producing copper/ zinc ore since 1970 at a rate of approximately one million tons per year, and until 1978all production was derived from longhole open stopes. In June 1978, a trial stope using bighole mining methods was started to eliminate the development of two sublevels between 400 level and surface. The trial proved to be successful, and bighole mining is now an accepted mining method for both stopes and pillars at Fox Mine.When production blasting was started in the first stope, the biggest problem encountered was the production of large amounts of sulphur dioxide gas as a result of secondary sulphide dust explosions. This gas generation resulted in lost production time and caused minor damage to underground installations to the blast level, and to the headframe. Sulphur dioxide generation has been noted in secondary drawpoint blasts and, on rare occasions, in drift rounds.This paper discusses the occurrence of the sulphur blasts and the practices and precautions used to prevent their reoccurrence at Fox Mine.IntroductionThe Fox minesite is located 30 miles southwest of Lynn Lake, Manitoba. With production startup in 1970, Fox Mine is owned and operated by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited.The Fox orebody occurs as a large lenticular zone of semi-massive sulphides approximately 1,500 feet long and 15 to 100 feet wide running east and west. Dipping 70 degrees to the north, the orebody tends to bottom out at the 3200-foot level and reaches to within 15 feet of surface."

IntroductionReduction of sulphur dioxide emissions has been a long-standing endeavour at Inco. At the company's Ontario Division, as shown in Figure 1, sulphur dioxide emissions were reduced from about 2 million to 685 000 tonnes per year over the period 1970-1985. Most of this impressive improvement was the result of a sustained research effort which led to increased rejection of pyrrhotite from the ore during milling while maintaining an acceptable nickel recovery. Between 1970 and 1985, the combined grade of the separate nickel and copper concentrates feeding the Copper Cliff Smelter increased from about 10070 to about 'lIJ0J0 Cu +Ni and the combined S/(CU +Ni) ratio decreased from about 2.8 to 1.65."

What makes it look unsurmountable?New Games: New RulesLawyers have described some of the new rules companies are facing and there is a new game being played; a game characterized by unique challenges.Take two, for example: • The ecological problems to be faced are Mother Nature's business, the political solutions required are our business. This combination of natural problems and political solutions requires the development of new management mechanisms, to bridge the gaps among us, as individuals, as professions, as interest groups and so on; indeed, even as countries;• and gaps there are : about as many gaps as the people involved : many of them with new and changing expectations, often mutually exclusive and not negotiable.The challenge of these relationships and communications among so many different interests is one of the keys to effective environmental management.Like any game, this one has rules and they are new, too. In the past, different furnace types have been developed for use within the copper industry, with two common anode furnace designs typically used in copper smelting plants worldwide: the tiltable reverberatory furnace (KPO) generally used for the secondary copper industry and the cylindrical or drum type anode furnace (TRO) for handling a liquid blister charge generated in primary copper production. The disadvantage of the KPO is its design related to the longer refining period, because of the low bath depth, however it provides good conditions in the melting period due to its large bath surface. On the other hand, small amounts of scrap charged into the TRO increase the melting and dissolution period, but it provides good conditions for the refining period. The newly-developed elliptical furnace concept (TRE) offers the advantages of each of these furnace types. The special design allows melting of the scrap more efficiently than in the KPO and refining the liquid copper more efficiently than the TRO. This paper shows a metallurgical comparison of the three furnace types in regard to the melting period by heat technological considerations (optimized arch design) and of the refining period done by CFD with concentration on current, recirculation and dwell time of the gas in the melt. The paper outlines the possibilities for a reduction of the tap-to-tap time and energy consumption as well as for an increase of the production capacity, which can be achieved by applying the TRE instead of the conventional furnace designs.

In terms of throughput, product size and power draw, grindcurves provide a measure of the response of the mill performance to changes in mill operating parameters ? usually mill filling. Since presenting the principle in 2006, grindcurves have been applied to a wide variety of AG and SAG mills. Mill response has been carefully measured for variations in: mill fillings from 15% to 40%; throughput by a factor of two; power by 50%; feed blends; liner profile; and mill speed from 65% to 80%. The outcomes of this extensive program of work are presented as the measured grindcurves. How they have enhanced our understanding of mill operation and how they may be applied to practical daily mill control is discussed. It is proposed that this technique provides a viable and valuable mill control tool that may find extensive application in the industry.

"The expansion of the concentrator at New Gold’s New Afton copper-gold mine in British Columbia, Canada, completed in 2015, included an increase in the required retention time of the cleaning circuit. On site pilot testing of a Woodgrove Staged Flotation Reactor (SFR) had shown that a high grade copper concentrate would be produced with excellent recovery. The SFR was selected rather than conventional tank cell technology based on the much smaller footprint (which rendered a separate and expensive building extension unnecessary), high concentrate grades demonstrated in testing, and the lower energy requirement. Three SFRs, each capable of taking a nominal feed of 700 cubic meters per hour were installed and commissioned 10 months after the receipt of order. The SFRs operate in series and all of the cells produce a final concentrate typically grading 32% Cu, while the overall SFR stage recovery averages 55%. The tailings from the SFRs are treated in the original conventional three-stage cleaner circuit where the remaining values are recovered in a concentrate grading 28% Cu. Design production was achieved within days of the initial start-up of the SFR circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe New Afton concentrator, located near Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada processes a copper-gold ore with a designed head grade of 0.96% Cu, 0.72 g/tonne Au, and 2.22 g/t Ag.The New Afton Mine is a block cave mining operation. Ore is undercut from the bottom up and removed at the extraction level from a grid of draw points. Ore is trammed to the ore passes by underground loader and dropped to a haulage level for transport by trucks to the gyratory crusher. From the crusher, the ore is conveyed to the mill via a 4.5 kilometre long conveyor system. Block caving was chosen for the New Afton deposit because the underground infrastructure could be built below the historical open pit of the Afton Mine (a previous operation of Teck Resources) and this method is favorable to large-scale low-cost mining.The New Afton deposit is a copper-gold, alkalic porphyry system. Hypogene mineralization is characterized by discontinuous copper sulphide veinlets and disseminations, principally chalcopyrite and minor bornite, along with pyrite as the second most dominant sulphide. Gold particles vary in size from 5 µm to 40 µm and occur as native gold and electrum, associated mostly with the chalcopyrite grains and never with the pyrite. In some instances, a second alteration phase has resulted in the copper sulphides being replaced by tennantite-tetrahedrite locally and along faults that transect the mineralized body. The design head grade of arsenic is 244 PPM, although the presence of tennantite is inconsistent and can vary from trace levels to 15% of the total copper. No arsenopyrite is present in the hypogene ores. Supergene mineralization, consisting of native copper with accessory chalcocite occurs in minor amounts along faults and highly oxidized near-surface portions of the deposit."
