Thus, in order to judge the merit of an investment opportunity, it is necessary to estimate the value of the assets to be acquired.Discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis has become widely adopted by companies in assessing potential new investments. The principle is a simple one: invest in projects which have a positive net present value, and reject those which do not. However, perhaps because of its apparent simplicity, DCF analysis is frequently misused. Good practice in the use of the technique is discussed, together with several common misconceptions.Sound analysis requires sound data; thus, the valuation process relies heavily upon a wide range of specialists to provide the basic input from which cash flow forecasts can be built up. The analyst must maintain close liaison with these specialists from the outset in order to ensure that the data provided is indeed relevant and complete.IntroductionBefore turning to the main subject of this paper ""How Companies Value Properties"", it is of interest to consider first a slightly different question ""Why do Companies value Properties""? In other words, for what purposes are such valuations prepared? Certainly the commonest, and probably the most important circumstance in which a valuation is required is when the company is considering an investment opportunity. This may be the direct purchase of a property or group of properties from a third party, but could also be the opportunity to develop a new operation or expand an existing one.A very simple objective in making any kind of investment is to make our shareholders richer than they would otherwise have been. That is, to make investments whose value to shareholders exceeds the consideration required to acquire them. Thus the investment decision focusses on the difference between an asset's value and its cost.This distinction between ""value"" and ""cost"" is an important one. Study of a company's balance sheet may tell a lot about the cost of this company's assets, but very little about their value. Then again, it is sometimes argued that a business should be bought because this will result in assets being acquired for less than their replacement cost. This merely compares one cost with another, it says nothing about value."

The slag removed from the reverberatory furnaces of copper smelters contains significant copper values. A serious financial loss is involved, as further recovery operations are not normally carried out. This paper describes the factors affecting physical transport of matte into slag by gas bubbles, and the subsequent entrapment and flotation of matte drops. Three distinct patterns of transport behaviour have been identified from studies of a number of liquid/liquid systems, including liquid metal and liquid matte systems. A theoretical approach is proposed to explain these behaviour patterns, and to predict transport and entrapment behaviour in matte/slag systems. The concepts of "Film Coefficient" (ø) and "Flotation Coefficient" (?) are introduced. The effects of smelting process variables on the physical loss of copper matte in slag are also discussed.

Drilling high-pressure/high-temperature wells in salt rock formations is still a challenge for the energy industry. Creep and solubility is part of the salt rock physical-chemical behaviour, which must be considered in the design of the wells. The stress redistribution caused by drilling, in addition to thermallyactivated processes, triggers creep deformation, leading to borehole closure and the imposition of loads on the casing. The drilling fluid is designed by computer modeling in order to control the creep strain rate to a limit which allows the drilling operations and the casing setting. Depending upon the composition of the drilling fluid, chemical reactions on the salt wall may occur, especially in case of water-based fluids in highly soluble salt rocks. In those cases, cavities by dissolution (washouts) can be generated and the casing column remains uncovered by the cementation and laterally unconfined along the cavity length. This scenario is propitious to the loss of integrity of the casing due to phenomena such as plastic collapse, buckling and non-uniform loading on the casing provoked by the closure of salt formation around it. The casing should remain intact during the wellbore life-time. In this work, a section of a typical well crossing salt formation composed by halite and carnallite is considered. An idealized-cylindrical washout cavity inside a highly soluble salt layer is assumed. The purpose here is to evaluate the effect of the dimensions of the cavity on the integrity of the casing. Several typical diameters and lengths of the cavity are adopted. Numerical analyses are carried out with an in-house finite-element system composed by the pre-processor MTOOL 3D®, the simulator ANVEC 3D® and the post-processor POS 3D®. Salt rocks are modeled as visco-elastic materials. Creep is simulated by the Double Mechanism Creep Law, widely employed in Brazilian salt rock mechanics research. Cement and casing (steel) are modeled as elasto-plastic materials described by the Mohr-Coulomb and the von Mises criteria, respectively. Casing integrity is evaluated with respect to vertical and horizontal displacements. Vertical displacements imposed to the casing can provoke the failure of the column by plastic collapse or by buckling. Besides that, horizontal displacements of salt due to creep closure shall lead to the undesirable contact with the casing. Failure envelopes based on displacements are generated. The results of the simulations have shown that the casing failure by plastic collapse occurs preferentially in short columns, as well as buckling occurs in long and slender columns. The occurrence of both failure modes is more frequent in large-diameter cavities. Additionally, failure caused by contact between salt and casing occurs preferentially in short-diameter cavities.

"Proterozoic plutonic and volcanic rocks in the Franklin Mountains, west Texas, exhibit similar values in average concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU), equivalent thorium (eTh) and equivalent potassium (eK) when compared to Proterozoic igneous rocks of the southwestern United States. Variations of radioelement concentrations for all Proterozoic igneous rocks of the Franklin Mountains range from 1.1 to 357.1 ppm U, 2.1to 259.1 ppm Th and 2.5 to 10.2% K.Recent geologic mapping of the Proterozoic rocks in the Franklin Mountains revealed several types of granites previously unrecognized, and these warrant further exploration for U and Th resources. Fluorite-bearing granites and riebeckite pegmatites are likely targets for further investigation, as these have the highest U and Th concentrations compared to all other granites.IntroductionThis is a summary of the paper presented at the CIM Geology Division Uranium Symposium held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, September 8-13, 1981. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution of uranium (U), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) in Proterozoic igneous rocks in the Franklin Mountains, and compare radioelement concentrations to Proterozoic igneous rocks elsewhere in the southwestern United States.General GeologyThe Franklin Mountains are located in west Texas and southcentral New Mexico, within the southeastern part of the Basin and Range Province o f the southwestern United States. The Franklins are a complex fault-block range trending northsouth with strata dipping toward the west. Ages of the rocks range from Proterozoic to Cretaceous. Harbour (1972, 1960) provides the most recent account of the general geology of the Franklin Mountains. Most recent accounts of the detailed Pro Proterozoic geology o f the Franklins are provided by Hoffer (1976), Thomann (1980, 1981), Pyron (1980), Ray (1982) and McCutcheon (1982)."

"The Baker Mine used a 100-ton per day conventional cyanide leach mill located in northern British Columbia. A production decision was made in early 1980 and the mill was on fine in April 1981.Ore reserves had been estimated at 100,000 Ions averaging 0.9 oz gold per ton and 18 oz silver per ton . Mineralization consists of electrum (Au/Ag) and acanthite (Ag2S).This paper will review plant design and focus on some problems associated with start-up and early operation with the intention of assisting other mine operators by indicating potential problem areas.IntroductionThis paper will discuss operating strategies employed at Baker which improved over-all mill performance. Also included are some ideas which could be steps toward a more efficient operation in a similar setting.Actual dore production by mine life was 37,606 oz gold and 742,117 oz silver.Figure 1 illustrates the relative stability attained over the mine life. Metal recoveries for gold and silver were 92% and 85% respectively.Safety at Baker was of prime importance because of its remote location. Baker received the Mine Safety Association ""Small Mines Award "" in two of its three operating years. At shutdown in late 1983 the mill had operated for over 850 days without a lost-time accident."

"The Early YearsThe Grand Lake coal fields in New Brunswick undoubtedly can claim the distinction of being the first part of North America from which coal was mined and exported. The diaries of the Governor of Massachusetts during the first half of the 17th century clearly establish this fact. There is also a reference in the Massachusetts Colonial Records which indicate that coal exports to New England were carried on as early as 1639.It has generally been believed that Cape Breton mined and exported the first coal; but no account has yet been found to show that this took place earlier than 1676. Both at Grand Lake and Cape Breton the coal was near the surface and removed by hand.When the country passed entirely into British control, Joseph Garrison, a grantee of Maugerville in 1765 moved to Jemseg. While surveying the north side of Grand Lake he discovered outcroppings of coal on the shore of the lake and further inland along the banks of streams. It was he who named Newcastle Creek in reference to Newcastle in England, which was widely known for its coal mines. Joseph Garrison died in 1783, the same year that an influx of United Empire Loyalists increased settlement in Newcastle Creek in the area now known as Minto. Many Loyalists also settled on the shores on both sides of Grand Lake.At a number of points where streams cut channels through the overlying strata, the coal seams were exposed and it was at such outcroppings that the early operations were carried on. A tunnel was driven in the seam from the foot of the bank, affording both an outlet for the coal and natural drainage from the workings. The coal was loaded into boxes and wheeled over wooden tracks to a point on the surface where it could be dumped into wagons and hauled either direct to destination or to where it could be loaded into boats and conveyed via Grand Lake, Jemseg and Saint John river to points of distribution.In the latter part of the 18th century and first years of the 19th century, farmers were undisturbed by mining the coal found on their lands. This was soon to change and resulted in many years of contention between landowners and the Legislative Assembly.New Brunswick became a separate province from Nova Scotia in 1784 and the seat of government moved from Saint John to Fredericton in 1788. The new province had its first priorities; the establishment of counties, the building of roads, and the development of its natural resources. From 1805, records of coal and land development are fairly complete. These records show the increasing interest of the Province in developing the coal fields. This interest resulted in the granting of coal leases to many friends of the government, without any regard for the wishes of the farmers who owned and had occupied the land for many years. The farmers fought back with lawsuits and other forms of dissension but with little success. By the end of the 19th century there were very few farm operators left in the area."

"Selected methods of pressure loss predictions in horizontal slurry flow in pipelines are presented. For a given combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, the slurry and its flow conditions are described, and an appropriate method of pressure loss prediction is outlined. The wide range of conditions treated in this paper may be found in practice in areas varying from the hydraulic transport of low concentration slurries to dense-phase conveying of paste backfill in underground mines.IntroductionThe hydraulic conveying of solid particles in pipelines is a major component of the mining and mineral processing industry. Whether the objective is to transport ore to the processing plant or to make use of mill tailing as backfill material; the need for well designed, economical hydraulic conveying systems is recognized.The contribution of this paper is part of an on-going research program at McGill University involved in optimizing and developing techniques for total mine waste disposal. One of the main concerns in the conveying of solid-liquid mixtures is the prior knowledge of the pumping power input required. This energy requirement is directly proportional to the pressure losses incurred in the pipeline system. Understanding the sources of such pressure losses and predicting their magnitudes should enable the system designer to make informed decisions regarding the optimum mode of hydraulic transportation commensurate with the over-all requirements of the operation.This paper is an attempt to classify pressure loss prediction methods encountered in the literature for solid-liquid mixtures. In spite of the large number of publications spanning thirty years of research in the field of slurry transportation, it is sometimes difficult to correctly identify the appropriate methods applicable to a given situation. This is partly due to the inherent complexity of the mechanics of slurry flow and the ensuing uncertainty about the nature of the flow regime under investigation.Our approach is to use three fundamental parameters, namely: flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size (for solid particles with a given density) to characterize the slurry and the flow conditions, and to match them with an adequate pressure loss prediction method. For each combination of flow velocity, solids concentration and particle size, a description of the most likely prevalent flow conditions and some known methods of dealing with them will be presented. Qualitative definitions of ""high"" and ""low"" magnitudes of the aforementioned parameters will be given as a general guide to the classification scheme presented in this paper."

"This paper describes the revisions to the heating and ventilating system at the Frood-Stobie mill, which resulted in substantial savings in energy costs.IntroductionInco Metals Company, a unit of Inco Limited, is involved in the mining and processing of nickel-copper ores. The Ontario Division of Inco Metals consists of 10 operating mines, with 5 mines and open pits on a standby basis, and 10 pro- cessing facilities, located in Sudbury, Port Colborne and Shebandowan. In 1980, the Ontario Division's energy expenditures amounted to $87,000,000.Due to the accelerating cost of energy, the Division established an Energy Management Program in 1975 to define, evaluate and implement measures to reduce energy cost and consumption per unit of output by 10% by 1980. This falls in line with the goals set by the mining and metallurgical task force on voluntary energy conservation.To effectively implement the program, Plant Committees were established at each plant and mine area, with an energy management coordinator appointed to coordinate the activities. The Plant Committee's responsibilities include identifying the major areas of energy consumption, isolating areas with large potential losses and determining what action should be taken to improve energy efficiency.Within a five-year period from 1975 to 1980, the Ontario Division has been able to cut its energy consumption by 8.9 trillion BTUs, the equivalent of 1.5 million barrels of oil."

"This paper describes the development of a process flowsheet designed to provide high dewatering rates and to bring about savings in tailing disposal costs. The flowsheet comprises a hydrocyclone, a settling cone and a thickener arranged in closed circuit. The mill tailing, after pulp density adjustment, is fed to the hydrocyclone which yields two products. The underflow product is sent to the settling cone for further dewatering. The overflow product, together with the settling cone overflow, goes to the thickener which, with the aid of flocculants, gives a clear effluent and a relatively dilute underflow. The latter combines with the original mill tailing to form the hydrocyclone feed. Solids finally leave the system in the settling cone underflow which can reach pulp densities of up to 78%, making it suitable for direct disposal or for use as mine backfill.Some discussion is included for the selection and sizing of equipment required for this process. INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an essential process for the disposal of mill tailings which forms an added burden in milling practice, often with little or no return. It is, therefore, desirable to conduct this process as economically as possible. One way of reducing costs would be to increase the rate of dewatering so that savings can be made in the size of dewatering unit s which would lead to lower capital and operating expenditures.A common method of dewatering mill tailings is gravity sedimentation which is frequently carried out with the aid of flocculation. In most cases, flocculation greatly enhances the sedimentation process, but only until a pulp density of 50% to 55% is reached in the settled material.Centrifugal sedimentation in hydrocyclones can provide high pulp densities rapidly, but does not result in a clear effluent.This paper outlines a suitable combination of gravity and centrifugal sedimentations that results in an over-all high rate of dewatering. The system developed produces a material of high pulp density while at the same time giving clear effluent."

"The stability of calcium arsenate is discussed in relation to the possible misuse of lime in the treatment of gold processing waste waters. Stability diagrams have been derived and experimental results cited to show that calcium arsenate has a higher solubility in neutral to alkaline solution than has previously been recognized and this solubility is further enhanced by the presence of carbon dioxide, bicarbonate or carbonate.IntroductionThe removal of arsenic from gold mine waste waters has been of interest for more than thirty years, but with the recent emphasis on clean water standards there has been renewed activity in relation to that problem. The processing of gold-bearing sulphides which contain arsenopyrite and other complex arsenic sulphides is well established. Initial roasting to oxidize the sulphides leaves the arsenic in the form of both arsenic and arsenic, in which forms it is soluble in the subsequent leaching stage. Further oxidation of the leach liquors is required before the well-established procedure of precipitating calcium arsenate with lime, which is carried out despite an immense lack of knowledge of the calcium-arsenic-water system.The solubility product and free energy of formation for Ca3(AsO4)2, which are to be found in recent and reliable sources of data, originate from the work of Chukhlansev, whose experimental determination of the concentration of calcium from the solubility of calcium arsenate in solutions of various pH yields the results plotted in Figure 1. This is the work which has resulted in a wide acceptance of the ""insolubility"" of calcium arsenate and the use of lime to stabilize arsenic in that form.Laguitton attempted to further elucidate the chemistry of the lime addition method for treating arsenical waste waters from gold processing operations. The low solubility product for Ca3(AsO4)2 was the basis for his examination of likely chemical equilibria in the system. Laguitton and other workers have not considered atmospheric carbon dioxide as an important component in this system."

"The estimation of recoverable ore reserves for feasibility in precious metal deposits such as Pine Creek must account not only f or the extreme variability of the ore grade but also for the complexity of the geology. Compatible models f or both must be adopted. Further, very selective mining demands reserve estimates be based on small selection units whose individual grades cannot be estimated reliably from the exploration drilling data.Multigaussian kriging is one method based on a multivariate normal model for estimating recoverable reserves under such conditions. In this paper, a non-mathematical description of the multigaussian model is presented together with its application to the Pine Creek Gold Deposit. The results, when compared to the first year of production, are encouraging for the model but not without surprises.Together, Part 1 and Part 2 of this study combine a detailed and geologically conditioned variogram analysis with an appropriate estimation method for a highly variable low-grade gold deposit. This and other studies of gold deposits familiar to the author show convincingly both that while the appropriate geostatistical skills and techniques are necessary to tackle the question of reserves, equally important but often discounted is the need for an appropriate and compatible geological model. IntroductionThe Pine Creek gold mineralization is associated with saddle reefs, and quartz and quartz- sulphide veining within the Enterprise Anti cline. The anticlinal structure is complex and, prior to mining, the mineralization was considered to be mainly strata controlled. Grades vary up to 160 grams in l .5rn core samples with coefficients of variation in excess of three.The estimation of the recoverable reserves for such a depo sit must account for both the geological complexity and the extreme variability of the gold grade.Part 1 of this work presented the geological model for the deposit and summary statistics 0 f the gold data. A detailed structural and variogram analysis considered both gold grades and the normal score (or gaussian transform) of these gold grades for different composite sizes."

This month, Tax Notes examines tax legislation from a different angle, and sees some bright spots.The following article is based on a paper presented by the author at the International Gold Symposium in Rio de Janeiro in August 1989Introduction""No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”With one federal government, ten provincial governments, and two territorial governments all claiming to have constitutional rights to tax and otherwise regulate Canada's mining industry, and with each of these thirteen governments pursuing their respective rights with some vigor, government involvement in one way or another is an accepted way of life in the industry. While one's initial reaction to government involvement in an industry might be one of scepticism or fear, generally speaking the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada tend to be pro-mining. They recognize the importance of the mining industry to Canada, especially in terms of job creation and exports. It is not surprising, then, to find that an array of valuable fiscal incentives are available to the industry through federal and provincial legislation.This paper summarizes the principal incentives that are inherent in Canada's tax legislation, as well as the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program. Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to deal with all of the incentives that are available, it is noted that various forms of federal or provincial assistance are also available outside of specific legislation, through negotiation with government departments. This latter type of assistance is generally directed toward helping with the cost of infrastructure such as roads or hydro lines, or Jess often toward loan guarantees or similar financing assistance."

"A program of evaluation of in-mould electromagnetic stirring on the product of a straight-mould, billet continuous casting machine has been carried out. The effects on macrostructure, surface and internal quality, chemistry segregation and mechanical properties on carbon, low-alloy and resulphurized, free-machining steel billets and rolled bars are discussed. Operational aspects as a result of in-mould stirring are highlightedIntroductionA development program on electromagnetic stirring (EMS) in the mould of a continuous caster was started by Ferrco Engineering Limited in 1979, with the first experimental device being developed and installed at Lake Ontario Steel Company. As a result of these initial trials, new designs of in-mould EMS systems have been developed and are currently being used in continuous casters in North America and Europe. The rapid progress which has been made is in large measure due to the fruitful cooperation which has existed between the various parties, including Ferrco, the EMS equipment manufacturer, several operating plants and the University of Toronto.A brief review of some of the basic ' principles of electromagnetic stirring action on solidifying metal, and the landmarks of this process development, will explain the philosophy of this cooperation.From casting practice, it is well known that an equiaxed dendritic structure provides better' material properties than a columnar dendritic structure. Homogeneity of the equiaxed structure leads to better control of material properties, such as strength and ductility. Therefore, many efforts are being made to obtain this structure in continuous casting.The extent of the equiaxed zone is determined to a large degree by convective flow in the liquid. Fluid flow can fragment dendrites in the columnar zone, which then act as nuclei for grains in the equiaxed zone farther down the sump. This process is referred to as dendrite or grain multiplication."

Design features such as branches, bends, and knuckles should also be considered. This paper pro vides engineering information and various criteria for designing are passes, draw points. feeders, and support systems, together with several illustrative examples.IntroductionOre passes are the primary mean s o f vertical transfer of mined ore to the ore bins and loading pocket from which the o re is hoisted to the surface (Fig. 1) . While the words "" ore"" and ""ore pass"" are used here, such transfer systems ca n be used for any broken rock.The most extensive ore pass systems are found in caving and sublevel stoping mines. Extensive ore pass systems are also found in multilevel mines having steeply dipping orebodies. In more flat-lying orebodies , ore pass systems are sometimes used in conjunction with conveyor systems .Two decades have passed since the principles of the flow of bulk solids were formulated (Jenike, 1961, 1964; Johanson and Colijn, 1964; Kvapil , 1965). However, few published papers are available that discuss the design criteria for ore pass systems. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide the information necessary for good o re pass design .Rock Flow in Ore Pass SystemsIf an ore pass system is to fulfill its function, the transfer o f material must occur in an orderly fashion and in such a way that the full size of the opening is employed effectively. Apart from un controlled flow at the drawpoint, or outlet , whose design will be considered later in this paper, two occurrences may impede flow in an ore pass, namely:• Hangups due to interlocking arches.• Hangups due to cohesive arches.Prevention of each of these problems will be discussed in succeeding sections of this paper. A third problem piping, is related to the ratio of the drawpoint size to the o re pass size and will be discussed under drawpoint de sign."

"In 1985, a crushing plant, located in the feed preparation area of Kidd Creek's copper smelter, was modified. The plant, which originally had treated only copper-bearing materials for the smeller, at a rate of 10 tonnes per hour, was expanded to 40 tonnes per hour capacity and modified to treat silica ores to meet the smelter’s flux requirement and also gold ores from the company's Hoyle Pond property. In the storage area adjacent to the crushing plant a 300 tonne per day gold mill was constructed.This paper outlines the construction and first year of operation of the crushing plant and gold mill with emphasis placed on the capital and operating advantages to be gained by utilizing an existing metallurgical infrastructure.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Mines Ltd. copper-zinc-silver orebody is located 24 km north of Timmins, in Northern Ontario . Mining of this massive sulphide de posit commenced in 1966 and, in the ensuing years, a concentrator and zinc plant were constructed at the metallurgical complex, approximately 17 km by rail from the mine site . At this same site, in 1981, a copper smelter and refinery were commissioned. The smelter which utilizes the Mitsubishi smelting process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrate, has been comprehensively described in previous papers.At the time of the smelter construction, a small (10 tonnes per hour) crushing plant was installed in the smelter's feed preparation area. This plant was used to treat the copper-bearing revert material produced by the smelter, and, apart from periods when slags and matte were produced through furnace drainage at the end of each operating campaign, it was generally under-utilized. This fact, together with the requirement to devise a more cost effective method of providing silica flux for the smelting operation, was the basic rationale for modifying and expanding and crushing plan t. At the same time, development at Kidd's Hoyle Pond orebody had progressed to such a stage that a gold mill of 300 tonnes per day was warranted."

"In this paper the author presents the results of the 1992 CIM survey of graduates in minerals and technology programs in Canadian post-secondary institutions. As usual, the trends are out-of phase with the economic state of the industry. People who chose a minerals career in the prosperous days of the late 1980sare now entering a labour market in recession.The cyclical nature of enrollments is illustrated in a series of figures showing the trends since the CIM survey Wa5 begun in 1956 (and even earlier for mining engineering).In the survey, the respondents were asked to provide comments on their perceptions of the problems specific to minerals education in Canada. The large number of responses have led the author to the conclusions and recommendations given in the final part of the paper."

Mechanical-electrical personnel are present in all phases of the mining industry; the coverage is broad and diversified. Concepts of energy accounting are reviewed to pinpoint the sectors with a large energy consumption. Four sectors are reviewed: underground hard-rock mines, underground soft-rock mines, open-pit mines and mineral processing. In each sector, five or six technical innovations are analyzed as to their contribution to a more efficient use of energy.

"The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence in western New Brunswick is hosted in the Poplar Mountain volcanic complex (PMVC), which is located along the southern segment of the regional Woodstock fault zone. The PMVC consists of three principal units including, in ascending order, a porphyritic felsic volcanic unit, a volcaniclastic unit, and a mafic volcanic unit. U-Pb dating of zircon indicates that the age of the volcanic rocks is younger than 459 ± 3 Ma, and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mineralization-associated sericite indicates that the age of mineralization is 411 ± 3.7 Ma. Gold-mineralized zones occur in all the lithologic units but mainly in the porphyritic felsic volcanic unit. Gold zones are not controlled by individual faults but are characterized by high-density brittle fracturing, thin carbonate-quartz veining, and intensive ankerite-sericite alteration, superimposed on an earlier chlorite-calcite- quartz alteration. Gold is associated with arsenopyrite, which mostly occurs as disseminations in the host rocks, and to a lesser extent with quartz-carbonate-sericite veins and quartz-cemented breccias.Geochemical data indicate that mineralization-associated alteration is characterized by enrichment of K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Sr, Ba, As, Sb, W, C, and S. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the mineralizing fluids are composed of H2O, salts, and CO2 with variable amounts of N2 and CH4; salinities range from 2.3 to 10.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, but mainly from 2.3 to 5.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, and homogenization temperatures lie mainly between 220° and 270°C. Fluid pressures at the site of mineralization are estimated to have been 770 to 1200 bars, corresponding to a depth of 2.9 to 4.6 km at lithostatic pressure. The d18OSMOW and d13CPDB values of mineralization-related ankerite range from +14.5‰ to +16.5‰, and -6.8‰ to -8.3‰, respectively. The d18O values of the ore-forming fluids are estimated to be 6.4‰ to 8.3‰ at a temperature of 250°C. These carbon and oxygen isotope data fall in the field of magmatic fluids and in part the field of metamorphic fluids.Considering the geological setting of the region, abundant granitic intrusions, the similarity between the age of mineralization (411 ± 3.7 Ma) and the nearby Pokiok batholith (402-415 Ma), and the enrichment of granophile elements in mineralization-related alteration, the ore-forming fluids were probably derived from a granitic intrusion underneath the PMVC. These fluids were focused along structures related to the Woodstock fault. The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence might be compared to some granitic intrusion-related gold systems based on the geochemical data presented herein. "Electrodialysis (ED) is an electro-membrane technology based on electrochemical process using electrical energy for the production of chemicals. The process can be used for concentrating, extracting, separating products, modifying molecules, purifying solutions, pH adjustment and regenerating salts into their base and acid. This paper reviews the principle of ED, present some of the different options and discuss applications that are relevant to the hydrometallurgy and mining industries for the treatment of effluents focusing on recovery of chemicals (acid and metals) and recycling of water minimizing the environmental footprint.INTRODUCTIONElectrodialysis (ED) is usually defined as an electrochemical separation process in which electrically charged membranes and an electrical potential difference are used to separate ionic species from an aqueous solution and other uncharged components [1]. ED technology consists of an electro-membrane technology based on an electrochemical process using electrical energy for the production of chemicals. It is a method combining electrolysis and dialysis was proposed for the first time in 1890 by Maigrot and Sabates [2]. In the late 1930s Teorell, Meyer and Sievers discussed membrane phenomena, revealed membrane potential, electric conductivity, transport number [3]. Meyers and Strauss introduced a multi-compartment ED apparatus consisting of two electrodes and a stack of ion-exchange membranes between them [1]. They succeeded to double the concentration of a KCL solution [3- Tarleton]. In general, ED consumes less energy than electrolysis to perform salt splitting. In that regard, one can expect an energy reduction of about 30% [4–5]. ED offers a great versatility in the domain of separation processes. Indeed, it can be used for concentrating, extracting, separating products, purifying by desalination, pH adjustment and regenerating a salt to acid and base components. This paper reviews the principle of ED, presents various options available and discusses potential applications relevant to the mining and metallurgy industries with economics of some successful industrial applications."

"There is a widespread concern that certain of Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform proposals will likely lead to a significant decline in flow through funding after 1988. This does not bode well for the junior exploration sector, which relies heavily on flow-through to finance exploration programs. The exploration industry is actively pursuing various solutions to the problems posed by Tax Reform, in order to ensure that flow-through has a future.IntroductionWhile the proposals contained in Finance Minister Michael Wilson's Tax Reform White Paper may not be as far-reaching as some people had expected, nevertheless the combination of the existing tax rules and proposed new rules offers sufficient complexity to keep pencils sharpened for many months. After having had an opportunity to study Tax Reform since June 18, 1987, the sharpened pencils are suggesting that the White Paper is not without its shortcomings and pitfalls. Insofar as the mineral exploration industry is affected, there is widespread concern that adoption of certain Tax Reform proposals could spell near disaster for mineral exploration in Canada. More specifically, there seems to be a consensus among the industry, as well as some federal and provincial government officials, that the announced phase-out of the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) would reduce the appeal of flow-through shares to the point where only a fraction of exploration funding would be financed in the future by flow-through."
