APPROXIMA TEL Y 95 percent of Waite-Amulet's Lower A orebody will be mined by diamond-drill stoping. This method of stoping was developed, and has been successfully applied, at the Noranda mine in recent years(1) and is now used in several base-metal and gold mines in north-western Quebec and in other parts of Canada, South Africa, and Australia. The purpose of this paper is to deal with the features of the Lower A ore-body which led' to the adoption of this method of stoping, and in addition to give a general description of stope layout, stope development, main haulage development, chutes and grizzlies, diamond drilling for stope blasting, diamond drilling and equipment, primary blasting, secondary blasting, haulage and loading, ore pockets, pumping and drainage,. and shafts at Waite Amulet. Figure 1 is an isometric projection of the orebody, illustrating the mining system. The factors that led to the adoption of diamond-drill stoping of Lower A orebody are as follows: (1) Safety.0 (2) Size and shape of the orebody, and depth of the orebody below surface. (3) Strength of the hanging-wall, footwall, and sulphide ore. (4) Continuous ring-drilling from sub-level drifts, with no delay for blasting. (5) Large-tonnage blasts at the end of Saturday afternoon shift, after ali men are out of the mine. (6) Sub-levels may be retreated from top to bottom simultaneously, or lower sub-levels may be retreated first without any change in the ring-drilling la yout. (7) Large stopes up to 100 feet wide can be mined, leaving substantial pillars up to 60 feet in width, which may be partially recovered by âiamond~drill stoping or by other stoping methods. (8) A large tonnage may be drilled-off in advance of blasting, but only a supply of unoxidized ore for flotation treatment is blasted. (9) Better ventilation during working shifts. (10) Gravity flow of all broken ore to grizzlies located in the footwall of the orebody. (11) Electric blasting by a crew of two men.

There is an increasing trend between increasing consumption of water and the production of metal concentrate. Along with this trend we see that ore grades are declining and getting more complex to concentrate around the world. This will not only complicate processing but also generate new requirements for the management of water and waste streams on mining sites. The mining industry is a large user of water and its water consumption is growing rapidly. The processing of lower quality ores requires greater volumes of water. For these reasons, the need for efficient use of water and water management at mine sites is becoming more urgent. The perception of water in the mining industry has changed from thinking about it only in terms of "water treatment" to actually seeing it as a valuable resource, a resource that needs proper management. This resource management needs to involve various aspects, such as optimizing water usage of the entire mine or concentrator site, minimizing fresh water usage, minimizing or eliminating waste generated in water treatment and implementing practices for water reuse and water recycling. This paper presents trends and new developments relating to waste and water management in the mining industry.

The formation, evolution and classification of peat bogs is discussed. Factors resulting in the internal and external morphological changes in a bog are described. The fibrous, absorptive and sterile properties of peat moss account for its widespread use in horticulture and related fields. These properties also account for its usefulness as a binder in pelletizing, as an insulating material in bat tons and in panel construction. Peat, the humijied product of peat moss is used in market gardening and sod growing. It is utilized in Europe as fuel. It is a source of activated carbon and gas. Potentially peat can be used to produce waxes, resins, tannins, cellulose, hemicellu/ ose, humic acids, lignin and hymatomelanic acid. At present other cheaper sources are available.

Based on improved methods of collection and analysis of geotechnical data, slope angles have been steepened in some mines of the Iron Ore Company of Canada at Schefferville, Quebec. This paper describes the slope design case history for Fleming NO.3 mine and illustrates the application of modern techniques. The new design has resulted in significant financial savings due to a reduction in required waste stripping.

"IntroductionThe Beaverlodge District is an important mineralogenic province of pitchblende and occupies about 1300 square kilometres centred on Beaverlodge Lake near the north shore of Lake Athabasca in northwest Saskatchewan (Fig. 1). Uranium City is the main settlement of the area and is serviced by scheduled aircraft from Edmonton, some 700 km to the southwest, and from Prince Albert which lies a similar distance to the south.During the summer, boats and barges supply the area from the railhead to Fort McMurray via the Athabasca River and Lake Athabasca, a distance of about 550 km. For the past few years a winter road has been maintained across Lake Athabasca to Cluff Lake to connect with Highway 155.The topography of the area is typical of the Precambrian Shield with generally low relief and a disorganized drainage of numerous lakes separated by hummocky rock ridges, muskeg and drift-covered areas. Local topography in the area is, however, extremely rugged, particularly south and east of Beaverlodge Lake, where resistant rocks form prominent hills and ridges extending as much as 180 m above lake level. Rock exposures are abundant and form over 50 per cent of the land area.History of Exploration and DevelopmentEconomic interest was first aroused by Tyrrell (1896) who described an occurrence of iron formation at Fish Hook Bay; however, subsequent evaluation of the deposit indicated it to be uneconomic."

"IntroductionTHE ORE PILLARS in the lower ""A"" ore body of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, can be divided into two groups, those mined in the open by sub-level blast-hole methods, and those to be mined .against coarse rock fill. Of the three pillars in the last group one has been mined and is dealt with in this paper. The method of mining pillars against coarse rock fill was suggested by the late Dr. Oliver Hall, who was Consulting Engineer for the Company when recovery of No. 2 East pillar was being planned.HistoryThe Waite Amulet mine is in northwestern Quebec, nine miles north of the town of Noranda. The property is approximately three miles long by one mile wide. The present Company, which was formed by the amalgamation of Amulet Mines, Limited, and Waite Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, commenced operations in the summer of 1937. In the fall of 1939 a new .flotation mill was erected with a capacity of 1,200 tons per day, which was increased to 1,800 tons per day in 1943. The mill is presently operated at 1,400 tons per day.To date, seven orebodies have been found, the major ones being Lower A, East Waite, and Waite. Three separate concentrates are produced, copper, zinc, and pyrite. Total tonnage mined to the end of 1954 from all orebodies has been 7,340,000 tons, which averaged 4.6 per cent copper, 5.3 per cent zinc, and 0.037 oz. gold and 1.27 oz. silver per ton."

Introduction The technical library in the service of industry is gradually becoming a well recognized and important part of all progressive industrial organizations. The larger mining, metallurgical, and chemical firms of Canada are establishing extensive reference libraries in connection with their research and operating departments in order that the members of the organization may keep abreast of the rapidly developing fields of engineering in which they are interested. It is the purpose of this paper to point out the usefulness of such a department in any industrial organization, to give a general outline of a system for filing and dispensing information, and to outline briefly the literature to be consulted and the procedure to be adopted in instigating a literature search. The technical library falls under the classification known as 'Special Libraries', and is quite different from the general library in that it is a storehouse of facts and owes its value to the ready presentation of information required for each specific case, and in a form most ready for use. The library brings all the available information relative to the interests of the corporation from without the plant to the organization within, and also keep in touch with each department of the organization.

The phase equilibria in the Mg-Al-Ca system was investigated experimentally by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques similarly the Mg-Al-Sr system has been studied using DSC and XRD as well as scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS) and quantitative electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). A new ternary solid solution MgxAl4,xSr was confirmed in Mg-Al-Sr system, which is a substitutional solid solution of Mg atoms in Al4Sr. Maximum solubilities of 21.3 at.% Al in Mg17Sr2 and 11.4 at.% Al in Mg were observed. It was also noticed that Mg38Sr9 dissolved 12.5 at.% Al. In the Mg-Al-Ca ternary system, one of the invariant transformations predicted by thermodynamic modeling was verified experimentally and found to occur at 512°C with composition close to 10.8 at.% Ca, 79.5 at.% Mg and 9.7 at.% Al. A ternary solid solution (Mg,Al)2Ca was confirmed where large solid solubility of Al in Mg2Ca was observed.

Printed circuit boards of discarded personal computers, televisions, mobile phones and so on contain a significant amount of valuable metals. For the recycle of valuable metals contained in the printed circuit board wastes (P CB W), the effect of temperature on chlorination-volatilization of metals under chlorine gas flow was studied. The experimental sample used was powder of two types: crushed PCBW (Sample 1) made from PC and industrial machines, and crushed-combusted PCBW (Sample 2) made from Sample 1. The principal element in Sample 1 and Sample 2 was copper, about 13 wt% and 20 wt% respectively. Sample 1 was composed of pure metals such as copper, tin and lead. In comparison, Sample 2 consisted of oxide metals such as copper oxide, tin dioxide and silicon dioxide. The two samples were heated at predefined temperatures (ranging from 300 °C to 900 °C) in chlorine gas. The chlorine gas flow into the furnace was set at a rate of 100 mL/min. As a result, copper in Sample 1 began to volatilize at 600 °C and completely vaporized at 700 °C. While in Sample 2, copper started to volatilize at 600 °C and reached 100% vaporization at 800 °C. For Sample 1, zinc finished volatilizing at 500 °C, while for Sample 2, zinc volatilization reached only about 80% (maximum). Also, lead, nickel and titanium showed similar results. Consequently the volatilization rate of Sample 1 is higher than Sample 2 and the temperature dependency was verified for copper, lead, zinc, nickel, antimony, titanium and chromium. In fact, the volatilization rate of these metals increased with the temperature. This result reflects the difference between pure metal and metal oxide, as Sample 2 was combusted before the chlorination-volatilization test. Moreover, the chlorination reaction may be accelerated by a reductive atmosphere because Sample 1 contains carbon. In this study, the volatilization behavior of some valuable metals in PCBW by chlorine gas was observed. Further improvement in the rate of volatilization can be achieved by optimizing the experimental conditions.

The presence of copper-bearing rocks in the Coppermine River area of Arctic Canada has long been known. Word of this was probably circulated along the Arctic and Hudson Bay coasts by the Eskimo, who no doubt traded articles made from native copper among themselves. It is not known whether any of these ever reached the southern shores of Hudson bay. The Indians, also, knew of the occurrence of copper here, as they served as guides to Hearne when he made a successful trip over land from Hudson bay to the Coppermine river. The possible commercial importance of these copper deposits was early appreciated by the Hudson's Bay Company, who on December 7th, 1770, despatched Samuel Hearne from Fort Prince of Wales, now Fort Churchill, to investigate them. He reached the then unnamed river at a point forty miles from its mouth on July 14th, 1771, and after surveying the river to its mouth and naming it the Coppermine, he retraced his steps to Fort Churchill by an overland route. Hearne's expedition was probably the most remarkable and arduous ever attempted in Arctic exploration, but the actual value derived from the trip was entirely out of proportion with the hardships he must have suffered. He verified the occurrence of native copper, but his astronomical and other observations were of little value. Until 1912 no concerted effort was made to obtain any definite information as to the geology and economic value of the Copper-mine deposits.

"Grinding at Giant Yellowknife is done in two stages. The first stage consists of two ball mills in closed circuit will: mechanical classifiers, the classifier overflow goes to flotation. The tailings from this flotation circuit are separated into slime and sand portions, the slimes go to an additional flotation circuit while the sand portion goes to the secondary grinding mills.Milltronic automatic sound control units were installed on each of the two primary ball mills and put into operation September 3, 1966. After about two months adjustments to the control units the operators were taken off the grinding circuit on November 1, 1966. The operators duties were taken over by the automatic control units while miscellaneous work was taken over by the helpers in the mill. The labour saving by the installation is approximately $2250.00 per month.After a short period of operation it was apparent there was a slight change in grind. The screen analysis of the primary classifier overflows for the period May to August 1966 averaged 62.23% minus 200 mesh while for the period September to December 1966 averaged 62.0% minus 200 mesh. This is a slight coarsening of the grind. The change in the primary grind has manifested itself also in the screen analysis of the final grind. Before automation the final grind was 80% minus 200 mesh, while after automation it was 7 5% minus 200 mesh. A change of grind was also noted in the flotation concentrates. Before automation the screen analysis of the concentrates was 35% plus 200 mesh and 50% minus 3 25 mesh. A ft er automation it was 35% plus 200 mesh and 47 .5% minus 325 mesh. In other words the grind got coarser or perhaps we should say there was less overgrinding. Another significant change took place in the assays of the slime and sand portion of the primary flotation tailings. It was usual under manual control for the slime portion to assay higher in gold than the sand portion. The reverse is now true."

"Tensile strength of rock samples is measured by direct and indirect tensile tests in accordance with standard guidelines. Due to the difficulties in performing direct tensile test, the indirect tensile (Brazilian) test is conventionally carried out to obtain the ultimate tensile strength. A limited number of studies have been conducted to investigate the role of sample size (length to diameter ratio = L/D) in the stress distribution of the Brazilian test using numerical and analytical methods. These investigations showed that the tensile stress distribution along the loading diameter is not uniform. They also indicated that the difference between the tensile stress at the middle part and at the sides of the sample with higher L/D ratio is greater than that in the other samples.The objective of this study is to show the effect of tensile stress distribution on the fracture surface created by the Brazilian test from a morphological point of view on the samples with different L/D ratio. Hence, a series of fracture surfaces created using the Brazilian tests on the rock samples with L/D of 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25 and 1.5 were investigated.In this study, all fracture surfaces were scanned by a 3D laser profilommeter. A number of roughness profiles parallel and perpendicular to loading axis have been selected from the samples with different L/D ratio and spacing of 1 mm. The results show that the roughness of the profiles perpendicular to the loading axis increases with an increase of L/D ratio, while the roughness of the profiles parallel to the loading axis decreases. Furthermore, some roughness profiles parallel to the loading axis were chosen and divided into three segments. The results revealed that the segment in adjacent to the upper loading platen possesses higher roughness than the other segments."

The dissolution of chalcopyrite has received a significant amount of attention. The predominant paradigm of investigation is that its rate of dissolution is limited or passivated by a surface coating or film of material. The common candidates for such a passivating coating are numerous: polysulfide coating, metal deficient layers, copper sulfide coating, bornite layers, jarosite precipitates, and elemental sulfur films. While this line of explanation, that is, the explanation based on passivation, seems to have won some form of consensus with researchers, there is another explanation for the results that can account for all the results observed. Crundwell (1988) proposed that the solid state properties of chalcopyrite, in particular, the semiconducting properties, are responsible for the observed behaviour of chalcopyrite. The purpose of this paper is to outline the semiconductor mechanism of dissolution, and to show how this mechanism accounts for all the observed phenomena recently reported in the literature. Currently, a new construction method using a robotic system is widely spreading in construction sites. This study is related to the design of glazing robot?s teach pendant which can improve convenience of handling and hence improve the productivity through the efficient interaction between an operator and a robot while doing glazing works, e.g., curtain wall installing. The suitability of selection and arrangement of control switches was assessed according to mechanical motions of a glazing robot, and design guidelines for improving convenience and productivity were drawn up through questionnaires carried out by site operators. To verify the proposed design guidelines, working time comparison of the proposed teach pendant and the existing teach pendant was executed.

"Rare earths adsorbed on clay minerals are easily recovered via ion exchange during leaching with inorganic monovalent salt solutions. The leaching efficiency of various salts at 0.5M and 25°C was investigated as a function of cation type and salt system (sulphates vs. chlorides). (NH4)2SO4 was identified as the lixiviant of choice and a procedure was established to investigate the influence of lixiviant concentration, temperature, pH and agitation on desorption kinetics and REE extraction levels. It was determined that the kinetics were fast and the optimum leaching conditions (for >80% total REE extraction) required pH below 5 and moderate temperatures (<50°C). INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) are at the core of numerous advanced applications due to their various uses in high strength permanent magnets, lasers, automotive catalytic converters, fiber optics/superconductors, and electronic devices (as phosphors in TVs and display screens for computers and cell phones). Because of the ongoing development of new technologies, there is an increased demand for REE in the international market, with emphasis on identifying new resources to insure an adequate supply for present and future use. World production of rare earths is dominated by China, the United States and Australia; however, in terms of resources, China dominates the world potential with reserves estimated to be over 90% of the total (Chen, 2011).The main commercially significant REE sources, as reviewed by O’Driscoll (1991) are bastnasite (carbonate) and monazite (phosphate) minerals, containing up to 70% wt. rare earth oxides (REO). In spite of being high grade, these ores are associated with elevated recovery costs due to difficulty in mining, separation and beneficiation. Moreover, aggressive conditions are required to solubilize the REE from the mineral, such as leaching with hot, concentrated acids or baking in 70% NaOH (Gupta & Krishnamurti, 2005)."

Minerals containing uranium have been successfully pre-concentrated by flotation at Queen&apos;s University, Kingston. In particular, uraninite, uranothorite, euxenite, and fergusonite, have responded to flotation to yield grades of 0.2 to 6.0 .per cent U .o. with recoveries of 85 to 98 per cent, from heads analysing approximately 0.10 per cent U3Os. Of the ten or so radioactive samples examined to date, two distinct groups were recognizable, firstly, those samples in which uranium was the sole constituent of economic interest, and, secondly, those in which Columbium (with minor amount of tantalum) was present in addition to uranium. For the purpose of this paper, the results of investigation on two samples of each of the above groups have been selected as typical.

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled for particle size distributions chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMAT. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper clean¬ing flotation stages and to determine how overall silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products.RESUME Dix-neuf produits des circuits de flottation du cuivre et du zinc de la division Matagami de Noranda Inc. ont été échantillonnés pour leur distribution granulométrique, analyses chimiques et le contenu d'argent et d'or des fractions granulométriques. Le bilan métallurgique a été obtenu à l'aide du programme BILMAT. Ces résultats couples avec une etude minéralogique à la microsonde sont utilises pour quantifier les pertes argentifères aux diverses étapes de nettoyage du circuit de cuivre et pour de¬terminer la repartition de l'argent et des trois minéraux argentifères dans les produitsfinals de l'usine.INTRODUCTION The Matagami division of NORANDA INC. produces copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide ore which contains a small amount of gold (0.34 g/t) and silver (20 g/t). Only a small part of the silver (~-30%) is presently recovered in the copper concentrate. The objective of this study is to evaluate the metallurgical behaviour of silver, and secondarily of gold, in the flotation circuit for a possible increase of its recovery in the copper concentrate to improve its economic value. For that purpose it is worthwhile to study the minerals which bear silver and to determine the critical flotation stages where they are lost in the tails. The methodology proposed here is based on a coupling of a mineralogical study and a detailed mass balance calculation in the flotation circuit."

In this study, the effect of silicon on the microstructure, mechanical properties and hot tearing susceptibility of permanent mould cast AZ91E magnesium alloy was investigated. Varying amounts of silicon (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt.%) were added to AZ91E in the form of an Al-53 wt.% Si master alloy. The phase formation, grain size and solidification behavior of each alloy were characterized and related to their tensile properties and hot tearing susceptibility. The results showed that the addition of silicon resulted in the formation of Mg2Si particles. The presence of these particles led to an increase of the hardness, but was detrimental to the tensile strength and elongation of AZ91E. However, silicon significantly reduced the hot tearing susceptibility of AZ91E. This was attributed to the reduction of the grain size and the decreased freezing range of AZ91E, which contributed to improve the interdendritic feeding during the last stage of solidification.

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. "Although there have been great steps forward to integrate corrosion engineering into operations, there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a reactive manner. This is especially true when strategies focus on lagging indicators such as visual inspections, RCA (root-cause analysis), and FMECA (failure mode, effects and criticality analysis). This trend to “reactive maintenance” can be avoided by utilizing more inspection and monitoring methods to identify leading indicators of failures. Prevention is generally less costly than repairs; moreover, when paired with appropriate monitoring techniques, intervention of corrosion protection can be more effectively timed and based on more accurate data. Hatch asset reliability studies show nearly 80% of defects are introduced through operations and maintenance. Therefore, proactive corrosion management can provide the necessary feedback to optimize operations and maintenance strategies preventing costly corrosion losses. Understanding corrosion risks gives a clear picture of the benefits of a proactive approach to asset performance. Monitoring techniques (Non-Destructive Testing, field testing, sampling, etc.) by nature are a more effective means of improving maintenance efforts and preventing corrosion losses than other methods (RCA, FMECA). This paper will outline the importance of proactive corrosion management and demonstrate its benefits through industry examples.INTRODUCTION Over the past few decades, with the growth of technology and awareness of sustainable development many studies have shown the benefits of a proactive approach to maintenance strategies.
